- 0:12hello it's your friendly space Explorer
- 0:16paxi of all the fun outdoor activities
- 0:20to do on this beautiful planet
- 0:23Earth flying kites is one of my
- 0:27favorites to fly a kite you need
- 0:30wind wind is just air moving let's see
- 0:35how that
- 0:36happens you can't see it with your eyes
- 0:40but air is a mix of different gases
- 0:42which are all around you such as the
- 0:45oxygen we
- 0:47breathe the weight of these gases pushes
- 0:50down on Earth and creates air
- 0:53pressure If pressure changes the air
- 0:56starts to move I'll show you how
- 1:00this is the equator the part of the
- 1:02earth that receives the most
- 1:05sunlight the sun warms the air making
- 1:08the gases spread out and Rise into the
- 1:11atmosphere this creates an area of low
- 1:14pressure on the
- 1:17surface here at the poles it is cold so
- 1:20the gases stay close together and push
- 1:23down even more on Earth creating an area
- 1:26of high pressure air always moves moves
- 1:30from an area of high pressure to an area
- 1:33of low pressure for example on the
- 1:36Earth's surface from the cold poles
- 1:38towards the hot equator that's when we
- 1:41have wind but on its way the air gets
- 1:44twisted by the rotation of the earth so
- 1:47wind can come from all
- 1:50directions wind is a major part of the
- 1:53weather it can bring heat or storm
- 1:58clouds there are different ways to
- 2:00measure the
- 2:01wind let's find out more about
- 2:05this we can measure winds from space
- 2:08using satellites like
- 2:11eolus the first one that directly
- 2:14studied the air that
- 2:15moves it used a laser that sent out and
- 2:19created bright lights to do
- 2:22this we can also measure wind from Earth
- 2:26you've probably seen a wind Vein on
- 2:28homes that shows which Direction the
- 2:30wind is
- 2:31blowing weather stations have a similar
- 2:34device called an
- 2:37anemometer that tells you how fast and
- 2:39in what direction wind
- 2:42flows weather balloons also measure wind
- 2:45speed and direction when Rising through
- 2:48the
- 2:49atmosphere more than a thousand balloons
- 2:51are sent up every day all over the world
- 2:54to get a big picture of wind
- 2:57[Music]
- 3:00Al together this data is used to create
- 3:03the weather forecast you can check to
- 3:05plan the best day to fly a
- 3:08kite today we
- 3:11learned wind is simply air in
- 3:16motion air is a mix of gases and the
- 3:19weight of these gases pushing down on
- 3:22Earth creates air
- 3:24pressure when it's warm gases in the air
- 3:28rise and create create an area of low
- 3:32pressure when it's cold gases in the air
- 3:36sink and create an area of high
- 3:39pressure Wind forms when air moves from
- 3:42an area of high pressure to an area of
- 3:46low
- 3:47pressure wind can be measured from space
- 3:50using satellites like
- 3:53eolus wind can be measured on Earth
- 3:55using tools like wind veins and weather
- 3:58balloons
- 4:00wind is a major part of the weather and
- 4:03can bring heat or storm clouds see you
- 4:07soon to show you more incredible things
- 4:10about your planet and the universe
