- 0:10many things I like more than sitting
- 0:12outside on a clear night looking at the
- 0:15moon in the sky above your planet earth
- 0:18does present us with some beautiful
- 0:20sights doesn't it would you like to know
- 0:25more about the moon follow me most of
- 0:29the planets in our solar system have
- 0:31moons or natural satellites as
- 0:33astronomers call them some planets have
- 0:36several of them like Jupiter that has 79
- 0:40that's a lot of moons but the earth only
- 0:44has one and it's very special not to
- 0:48mention beautiful
- 0:50he's showing so brightly because it
- 0:53reflects the light coming from the Sun
- 0:55the moon orbits the earth which is the
- 0:58same as saying it goes around it at the
- 1:01same time it spins together the moon and
- 1:05Earth orbit the Sun the moon is about
- 1:10380,000 kilometers away from Earth and
- 1:13it's almost spherical shaped like a ball
- 1:17but it doesn't always look like a ball
- 1:20in the sky does it that's because of the
- 1:23phases of the Moon come with me so I can
- 1:26show you how it works it takes the moon
- 1:29about a month to go around the earth the
- 1:32different shapes or phases appear as the
- 1:35moon goes around the earth and is
- 1:37illuminated differently by the Sun let's
- 1:40see how it looks from the northern
- 1:42hemisphere of our planet when the moon
- 1:46is in the same direction as the Sun it
- 1:48can't be seen at night this first phase
- 1:51is called the new moon seven days later
- 1:54when the moon is a quarter way through
- 1:56its orbit half of the illuminated part
- 1:59of the Moon is seen from Earth this
- 2:01phase is called the first quarter it
- 2:04looks just like a capital D doesn't it
- 2:08halfway through its orbit around the
- 2:10earth fourteen days after we started
- 2:13counting we see the full moon as you
- 2:17might have guessed by now this is my
- 2:19favorite phase of the Moon when we can
- 2:21see it in all its glory look at that
- 2:27when we reach 21 days with
- 2:31three-quarters of the way around and we
- 2:33see the last quarter moon now it looks
- 2:36like a D but backwards if you on the
- 2:40southern hemisphere you see the moon
- 2:42reversed and the moon phases look a bit
- 2:45different it's like looking at the moon
- 2:47with your head upside down after a full
- 2:50orbit around the Earth the moon is back
- 2:52in its starting position and we start
- 2:55all over again
- 2:56so the moon is always there but we just
- 3:00can't see it all of the time
- 3:02once here another cool thing about the
- 3:05moon the moon's orbit is tilted this
- 3:08means that the moon the earth and the
- 3:11Sun are not always perfectly aligned but
- 3:14when they are something amazing happens
- 3:17and eclipse eclipses are magical
- 3:21experiences the moon can block the Sun
- 3:25completely from view and make it seem to
- 3:28disappear from the sky this is called a
- 3:31total solar eclipse there is also
- 3:33another type of eclipse the lunar
- 3:36eclipse now the earth is between the Sun
- 3:39and the moon the earth blocks nearly all
- 3:41the sunlight the Sun still reaches the
- 3:44moon and makes it look beautifully red
- 3:48[Music]
- 3:50next time you go outside look up at your
- 3:53beautiful moon what do you think awaits
- 3:56us there
- 3:57join me for our next space adventure to
- 3:59find out so today we learned that the
- 4:04moon is the Earth's natural satellite
- 4:07the moon spins while also orbiting the
- 4:10Earth together they orbit the Sun it
- 4:15takes about one month for the moon to go
- 4:17around the earth the mirror has
- 4:20different phases and we see it
- 4:22differently throughout a month when the
- 4:26moon earth and Sun are aligned we can
- 4:29have lunar and solar eclipses
- 4:32[Music]
- 4:46[Music]
