- 0:11hello it's paxy here
- 0:14isn't life on earth wonderful
- 0:16we enjoy life on earth and look after it
- 0:19with the help of lots of satellites they
- 0:22work just above the earth in what
- 0:24scientists call low earth orbit
- 0:28let's go and take a look at what's
- 0:30happening there
- 0:31why do you need to take this orbit
- 0:34i need to be here to observe the earth
- 0:37and track its health and that's very
- 0:39important and i need to help some people
- 0:42with their internet connection
- 0:44this is very important
- 0:46uh-oh
- 0:48it's getting a little crowded here
- 0:51many very useful satellites are in low
- 0:54earth orbit which is pretty close to us
- 0:57humans send them here because you need
- 0:59less energy and so less rocket fuel to
- 1:03place them here compared to farther out
- 1:05in space
- 1:06but above all these satellites need to
- 1:10be close to earth in order to do their
- 1:12jobs
- 1:13like taking pictures of earth or
- 1:15connecting people who live in isolated
- 1:18areas of the world to the internet
- 1:20[Music]
- 1:22hey be careful you hit me i've completed
- 1:26my mission but i can't come back to
- 1:28earth by myself
- 1:30help
- 1:31oh no
- 1:32this situation is getting out of control
- 1:35i need help to sort this out
- 1:38wait
- 1:39perhaps we can do something to improve
- 1:42this space debris jam can we use some
- 1:44kind of tool to grab these satellites
- 1:47and bring them back
- 1:49maybe a net or a robotic arm
- 1:55perhaps one of these types of satellites
- 1:58can help remove out of service
- 2:00satellites and broken pieces
- 2:02this space debris by guiding them safely
- 2:05to earth
- 2:08oh
- 2:09now that's better
- 2:11many of the satellites in space can't
- 2:14deorbit and return to earth at the end
- 2:16of their missions without help from
- 2:18other satellites can you think of tools
- 2:20that could help satellites deorbit
- 2:22themselves
- 2:24engineers and scientists are testing
- 2:26drag sails which are like ship sails to
- 2:30slow satellites down so they can fall
- 2:32toward earth and disintegrate or burn up
- 2:35in the atmosphere this way they leave
- 2:38the space free for other satellites
- 2:40without causing any damage back on earth
- 2:43but
- 2:44this only works for small satellites
- 2:47what do we do with the bigger ones
- 2:50larger satellites need more help
- 2:52they could carry extra fuel in their
- 2:55tanks enough to send them back to earth
- 2:57or even have extra motors that switch on
- 3:00at the end of their mission that push
- 3:02them toward the ocean
- 3:10all this makes me think that we need to
- 3:12keep earth orbits as clean as possible
- 3:14from space debris so that all our
- 3:17satellites can work at their best
- 3:19we also need to take care of earth in
- 3:22every way possible my friends
- 3:24we need to find more eco-friendly ways
- 3:27to lift our rockets and to design and
- 3:29build our spacecraft so they continue to
- 3:32protect earth without contaminating it
- 3:35[Music]
- 3:36you can also help protect earth by
- 3:39reducing reusing and recycling
- 3:43today we've learned that
- 3:45satellites orbiting earth can help us by
- 3:48studying our planet and connecting us to
- 3:50one another
- 3:52there are many old satellites and broken
- 3:54pieces of them called space debris
- 3:57orbiting the earth that can harm active
- 3:59spacecraft
- 4:01tools like robotic arms or nets may help
- 4:04remove out-of-service satellites from
- 4:06orbit designing satellites that can
- 4:09return to earth on their own is a great
- 4:11way to keep space free of debris
- 4:14building eco-friendly spacecraft is
- 4:16important to protect earth without
- 4:18contaminating it
- 4:20you can also help protect earth by
- 4:22reducing reusing and recycling
- 4:27[Music]
