2. 0:02good living just by taking people out on
3. 0:05Safari a few years later I opened up my
4. 0:08own consulting company we specialized in
5. 0:11setting up Safari
6. 0:13operations I thoroughly enjoyed watching
7. 0:15my bank account and my reputation grow
8. 0:19I'm almost certain that I'd still be
9. 0:21running my company today if I hadn't had
10. 0:24a really bad day at the
11. 0:28office
12. 0:30[Music]
13. 0:40I remember waking up on the morning of
14. 0:42Saturday March the 9th
15. 0:441996 I was quite excited and a little
16. 0:47nervous too I picked up the clients a
17. 0:50little earlier on that afternoon at
18. 0:52their hotels there was a middle-aged
19. 0:54married couple from Germany and two
20. 0:56young couples from
21. 0:58France I would always start with a
22. 1:00safety talk you see this could be quite
23. 1:03tricky as I I didn't want to scare
24. 1:05anyone but I needed to make sure that
25. 1:08they understood that out there in the
26. 1:09wild we were The
27. 1:12Intruders and that on the river there
28. 1:14was always the chance that things could
29. 1:16go horribly
30. 1:18wrong everyone was just having a
31. 1:20wonderful time sipping on their
32. 1:22cocktails Manching on their finger
33. 1:25snacks a little while later we came
34. 1:28across a pot of about a dozen Hipp
35. 1:31they were all just wallowing in the
36. 1:34shallows I started telling Joan and
37. 1:36Gundy a little bit about
38. 1:38hippos I didn't want to scare Gundy so I
39. 1:41didn't mention that hippos are
40. 1:43responsible for killing more people than
41. 1:45any other
42. 1:48animal then I led the way to the narrow
43. 1:51channel that would take us safely past
44. 1:53the
45. 1:54danger when I got to the channel I
46. 1:57turned to check that everyone was where
47. 1:59they were supposed to be me and sure
48. 2:00enough Ben was right behind me and Mac
49. 2:04was right alongside him but Evans had
50. 2:07fallen back a bit so to give him a
51. 2:10chance just to catch up I put my paddle
52. 2:12down and just
53. 2:15drifted the scenery there was
54. 2:19spectacular that it was Dusk and the
55. 2:21world was softly backlit just added to
56. 2:24the
57. 2:28experience we all just took a moment and
58. 2:32soaked in the peace and the
59. 2:40[Music]
60. 2:44Tranquility I turned just in time to see
61. 2:47Evans flying through the air before he
62. 2:50splashed into the
63. 2:52[Applause]
64. 2:54river my mind sprung into crisis
65. 2:57mode oh no not there to the back into
66. 3:00the back Ben get everyone to the
67. 3:04Rocks headling towards Evans hang in
68. 3:07there I'm coming to get you I lent over
69. 3:09to grab a hold of his outstretched hand
70. 3:11and as our fingers almost
71. 3:28touched
72. 3:32my world went dark and strangely quiet a
73. 3:36few very long seconds ticked by as I
74. 3:39tried to figure out what was going
75. 3:43on from my waist
76. 3:46up I was not dry but I wasn't wet either
77. 3:51not like my legs
78. 3:53were I was hid first up to my waist Don
79. 3:57hippo's throat
80. 4:00I pushed and I pulled and I wiggled

82. 4:06avail then the monster loosened his grip
83. 4:09long enough for me to
84. 4:11escape bursting to the
85. 4:14surface and came face to face with
86. 4:25Evans I remember looking up and I could
87. 4:28see the different Hues of green and
88. 4:30yellow the sunlight shimmering on the
89. 4:32water's surface I watched my blood
90. 4:35mingle with the water and I wondered
91. 4:38which would happen first if I'd bleed to
92. 4:41death or if I drown the hippo let me go
93. 4:48again the next thing I knew the front of
94. 4:51Max's Little Red Kayak appeared inches
95. 4:52from my face and I managed to grab a
96. 4:55hold of the handle on the boat's
97. 4:58nose and Mac showing
98. 5:02incredible bravery risked his life and
99. 5:06came and saved
100. 5:07me I made the mistake of taking a look
101. 5:10at myself my one arm from the elbow up
102. 5:13it had been crushed to a pulp and from
103. 5:16the elbow down it had been stripped of
104. 5:18all its flesh then a strange thing
105. 5:20happened I went incredibly calm and all
106. 5:24the pain went
107. 5:25away and I knew that it was my moment of
108. 5:28choice
109. 5:30I knew right there and
110. 5:32then I could shut my eyes I could drift
111. 5:35off I could call it a
112. 5:37day or I could fight my way through this
113. 5:40and I could stick
114. 5:42around the choice I made brought with it
115. 5:45more pain than I could have ever
116. 5:47believed that I could
117. 5:48endure the pain was so intense that I
118. 5:51thought for sure I was going to die and
119. 5:53then when I didn't there were moments
120. 5:55when I wished that I would just to
121. 5:57escape that excruciating agony
122. 6:008 hours later we made it to the hospital
123. 6:03in the nearby town of
124. 6:04Bol I could hear them
125. 6:08talking I heard things like oh doesn't
126. 6:11look
127. 6:14good and I can hear all this talk about
128. 6:16bits and pieces coming off and I'm
129. 6:18starting to panic again I said doc
130. 6:21please I know that you're going to do
131. 6:23what you've got to do but what do you
132. 6:25say you take the minimalist approach

134. 6:31I woke up staring at the whitewashed
135. 6:34ceiling my left arm had been amputated
136. 6:37above the
137. 6:38elbow
138. 6:40oh I felt sick to my
139. 6:43stomach I needed to know what was left
140. 6:46of
141. 6:47me I
142. 6:50looked there were two
143. 6:53legs at the end of each leg was a
144. 6:57foot each foot had five toes
145. 7:00now granted the one foot was really
146. 7:02really mangled but the bottom line was
147. 7:04both of my feet were still attached to
148. 7:07me I L back into the pillow and just
149. 7:09thanked
150. 7:11God losing my arm it turned out to be
151. 7:13far more expensive than I could ever
152. 7:16have
153. 7:17imagined my company was a thing of the
154. 7:20past I now I had a dead end desk
155. 7:23job I never got to see any of my friends
156. 7:26anymore I would just sit there feeling
157. 7:29miserable feeling sorry for myself
158. 7:31pretty much from when I woke up in the
159. 7:32morning to when I fell asleep at
160. 7:36night it came as no great surprise when
161. 7:38Jess and I split up I needed to start
162. 7:41making smarter choices if I wanted to
163. 7:44live a better
164. 7:45life a lot of people had written stories
165. 7:48about what had happened to me and it
166. 7:50didn't seem to matter whose version it
167. 7:52was man's attacked by hippo and maimed
168. 7:55for
169. 7:56life I needed to be able to see what had
170. 7:59happened to me not as the end of the
171. 8:01story but as just another chapter in my
172. 8:05[Music]
173. 8:06story so life was starting to feel good
174. 8:10again I decided what I wanted my new
175. 8:12life to look
176. 8:14like then I came up with a realistic
177. 8:17plan for how I would get to where I was
178. 8:19to where I wanted to be then I rolled up
179. 8:22my sleeves and I went to work each day
180. 8:26goes by and I get closer to reaching
181. 8:28what I thought were my goals I've come
182. 8:31to realize that I'm actually living the
183. 8:33life of my
184. 8:35dreams I think when you boil it down
185. 8:38what my message is is you're the sum of
186. 8:40your choices you're exactly who what and
187. 8:44where you choose to be in
188. 8:46life and that's applicable whether
189. 8:49you're up to your waist down a
190. 8:51hippopotamus mouth
191. 8:55or if you've just gone through a
192. 8:57personal tragedy or if you're
193. 8:59organization's
194. 9:00downsizing whatever happens life is
195. 9:03going to
196. 9:04happen but how you react to it it's the
197. 9:08sum of your
198. 9:10choices you are who what and where you
199. 9:12choose to be in
200. 9:17life
