- 0:00i see so many things that have happened
- 0:02since that that events that have led to
- 0:04to i guess a sharing of so much
- 0:06inspiration so much hope do you feel
- 0:09that that event was positioned to guide
- 0:12you into that do you have a sense of
- 0:15that now that everything that happened
- 0:17led you into writing what's left of me
- 0:20becoming an entrepreneur and basically
- 0:23sharing this story to provide hope and
- 0:25inspiration or was that something you
- 0:27feel would have happened anyway
- 0:30no i think it absolutely helped casper
- 0:34um initially
- 0:36um
- 0:38i
- 0:39i i had no intention of
- 0:43becoming a speaker or an author
- 0:45um but when i arrived in america
- 0:48and got married my wife at the time
- 0:50thought i should have a job which seemed
- 0:52very reasonable
- 0:53and it didn't seem that there were
- 0:55a whole lot of employment opportunities
- 0:58for a one-armed ex-safari guy in the
- 1:00metro detroit
- 1:02so
- 1:04at the time i'd set up a foundation of
- 1:06501c3 and we were helping um
- 1:10include lost limbs in africa and i was
- 1:12invited to go and speak and people kept
- 1:15saying to me you know you could actually
- 1:16pay some of your bills by doing that and
- 1:18so i became the accidental speaker
- 1:21and then writing the book
- 1:23was
- 1:25kind of cathartic so between standing on
- 1:27a stage sharing my story
- 1:30and trying to extrapolate lessons
- 1:33for me
- 1:34that i was able to share that was
- 1:36incredibly healthy and helpful
- 1:39and writing the book the same so
- 1:43extremely grateful for them that it was
- 1:45uh
- 1:47it wasn't by intent and
- 1:50when i look back at it now
- 1:53um
- 1:56i think it was training wheels for what
- 1:58was to come
- 1:59um what follow i thought that was going
- 2:02to
- 2:04be my life lesson
- 2:07i had no idea that that was just
- 2:09preparing me for what was to come
- 2:12yeah i think so much of the you know
- 2:14what we go through prepares us in in the
- 2:16if we let it be that correct and you
- 2:19know i've spoken to so many patients
- 2:20that have just gone through so much
- 2:22different strokes so many different
- 2:23struggles trauma
- 2:25and you know years and years of of
- 2:27suffering that look back once they get
- 2:30through and say the same thing those
- 2:32were the training wheels i could bless
- 2:33those events in the past they set me up
- 2:36for something bigger and also for taking
- 2:38on the challenges that were to come in a
- 2:40sense and for you you know you started a
- 2:42company opus dynamic that you founded or
- 2:45ceo of and it's a cbm which is a
- 2:48commitment based management company
- 2:51tell me about that commitment based
- 2:53management because i'm in business and i
- 2:55understand many different approaches to
- 2:57business and you know the non-for-profit
- 3:00everything but
- 3:01what led you to start that opus dynamic
- 3:05so i was i was incredibly blessed when i
- 3:07when i came to the us um
- 3:11just through a series of really crazy
- 3:12coincidences i ended up getting a job
- 3:15with a
- 3:17guy who actually was the founder of that
- 3:20ontology that methodology and he his
- 3:23company business design associates used
- 3:26chap called fernando flores
- 3:28had a lot of really really smart people
- 3:33working with it and they were looking at
- 3:35how do we build high performing teams
- 3:37how do we
- 3:40enable people to show up more fully
- 3:43to take care of their commitments to
- 3:44themselves and to each other
- 3:47and
- 3:49fernando quite brilliant and the teams
- 3:51that he had quite brilliant and they
- 3:53were looking for people
- 3:55uh practitioners to go and take this out
- 3:57to the world and i was just real blessed
- 4:00and real fortunate that i was kind of a
- 4:02test tube baby they were looking for
- 4:05people who had done things that were a
- 4:08little out of the norm klein mountains
- 4:10paddled rivers um who could engage and
- 4:12interact with people and who were kind
- 4:14of an embodiment so i felt
- 4:18i really appreciated that
- 4:20the team thought that was me
- 4:22and
- 4:24i learned all about i got
- 4:26deep dive and learned all about this
- 4:28commitment based management stuff and it
- 4:30was fantastic casper it was predicated
- 4:33on the position
- 4:35that as we interact with each other we
- 4:37make commitments and the way we take
- 4:39care of those commitments and the way we
- 4:41take care of ourselves and each other
- 4:43there's a direct correlation between
- 4:44that and success
- 4:47and there's a number of very simplistic
- 4:50moves and simplistic ways of being and
- 4:53doing things
- 4:54that we can learn that we don't just
- 4:56inherently come
- 4:57with thing into life with but that we
- 4:59can learn and we can apply and we can
- 5:01adapt and we can generate a lot of value
- 5:04and
- 5:06over the years it was magnificent i got
- 5:08to
- 5:09travel around the world work with teams
- 5:11a lot of um
- 5:13[Music]
- 5:14fortune 100 fortune 500 companies
- 5:17as my career escalated i ended up doing
- 5:20a lot of executive development executive
- 5:22coaching executive team coaching
- 5:24we've used this methodology with
- 5:26professional sports teams did a bunch of
- 5:29work with the military anytime you've
- 5:31got individuals who want to function as
- 5:33a high-performing team and really take
- 5:36their work to the next level this
- 5:38commitment-based management work is
- 5:42at first blush extremely simple
- 5:48but once applied is incredibly effective
- 5:52and i love that because once you make a
- 5:53commitment you have a goal you have
- 5:55purpose and like you said when you have
- 5:57purpose you have drive to drive on also
- 6:00and to all be driving on in the same
- 6:02direction with the same focus and same
- 6:04intensity and same energy positive
- 6:06energy hopefully and i think that's
- 6:08what's incredibly important for health
- 6:11in general i think people mistake that
- 6:14you know having purpose or you know
- 6:16anything in the realm of spirituality
- 6:18mentality really dictate health when it
- 6:20really starts with you know the physical
- 6:23side
- 6:24right whether that is what you eat how
- 6:26you work out whereas
- 6:28i think you know our approach a little
- 6:29bit more it is much more of a holistic
- 6:31one
- 6:32and it does uh have a very large section
- 6:37of that is what is your purpose what is
- 6:38your commitment to life where are you
- 6:40finding joy and where are you finding
- 6:42that passion and everything so i love to
- 6:45take that and apply that to business
- 6:47because i don't think that's just good
- 6:48business that's good for health as well
- 6:50and general well-being of everyone
