- 0:00If you were writing a song about our
- 0:01friendship, what would it be called?
- 0:04>> It would be called
- 0:06I Got a Question
- 0:08based on this game.
- 0:10>> Hey, something like
- 0:13I got a question
- 0:15and you got the answer.
- 0:20God damn.
- 0:24>> What did you know about me before we
- 0:26both joined this project?
- 0:27>> Wow. Danny Wilson,
- 0:29>> you were great up there. Come with me.
- 0:31>> I knew a lot about you. I'd seen you in
- 0:33films. I knew your music. Uh you're a
- 0:36big deal, Nick. And so I was uh and I
- 0:40also because we have some mutual
- 0:42friends. I was excited to to meet you.
- 0:45And I I knew that uh you had a kind of a
- 0:48tweaked sense of humor because some of
- 0:50the stuff that our friends were saying,
- 0:52I found that to be the case.
- 0:54>> And you knew that I was a big fan of
- 0:55yours.
- 0:56I just assumed.
- 0:57>> Yeah, you just assumed.
- 0:59>> Um, what do you remember about first
- 1:01meeting me?
- 1:04>> We were in the the suite in the movie uh
- 1:08Power Ballad. It was our entrance into
- 1:11the suite and there was like these big
- 1:13curtains and I remember you just sort of
- 1:15appeared out of the curtains, just
- 1:17arrived into the scene and um it was a a
- 1:21really quite a movie star entrance. Um,
- 1:25and I was I was struck. And then we
- 1:27talked about my my favorite movie of
- 1:29yours that came together, which I have a
- 1:32a signed poster in my home. Um, because
- 1:36one of our mutual friends, Jack McBrier,
- 1:38arranged this for my birthday on my I
- 1:40think it was my 30th birthday to get you
- 1:42all to sign it. So, thank you.
- 1:43>> That blew me away because Jack did he
- 1:45came to the set. He said, "This is for
- 1:47Nick's birthday." Uh, and that you loved
- 1:51that movie.
- 1:51>> What are you doing here?
- 1:52>> I'm a regular here. see a regular bean
- 1:55bag. I was like, he knows this movie and
- 1:59um I was really touched by that.
- 2:01>> What is your favorite Jonas Brothers
- 2:03song and why
- 2:04>> jealous? I mean, come on. Why? As if I
- 2:08have to explain.
- 2:14>> Technically not a Jonas Brother song.
- 2:16It's it's a solo song, but yeah, we'll
- 2:18still take it. And
- 2:19>> you're Jonas to me, baby.
- 2:22What sort of songwriting experience did
- 2:24you have before this movie?
- 2:26>> None. Songwriting? None. Um,
- 2:28>> have you ever improvised something in a
- 2:29movie that was a that was sort of a
- 2:31song?
- 2:32>> Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:34>> Slap the bass kind of.
- 2:35>> Yeah. Slap the bass, mama.
- 2:38>> Slaping the bass, mommy.
- 2:39>> There you go.
- 2:39>> Slap that bass, mama. I slap the B.
- 2:43>> Please don't do that. and role models.
- 2:46Uh, I sing Beth from Kiss, but I changed
- 2:50the words.
- 2:57>> I had to write the lyrics out because I
- 3:01was trying to revise it and stuff, but
- 3:04it was about the writer strike was
- 3:06happening and so all of these rules of
- 3:08what you're not allowed to do. Mhm.
- 3:11>> And um so I'm like, can I improvise? I
- 3:15don't know what like which I would do
- 3:16sometimes just acting. I did a take uh
- 3:20and I was kind of freestyling
- 3:23>> and you crushed it.
- 3:24>> Well, that's Thank you. I did. I don't
- 3:27know. I don't think I did, but I was
- 3:28also like what's legal to do? That might
- 3:31be totally legal. I might have just
- 3:32outed myself to the writer's guild.
- 3:35>> And I miss you so much.
- 3:38your beautiful smile and your positive
- 3:42attitude and your whispering eye.
- 3:44>> This is a great question. What's the
- 3:46most taken from your life pop star
- 3:48moment in this movie?
- 3:51>> There's quite literally some footage
- 3:53that they repurposed
- 3:56uh from my actual life as the character
- 3:59Danny Wilson. Um so much so that I'm
- 4:01wondering if if they got approval for
- 4:03that cuz
- 4:04>> I'm guessing no.
- 4:05>> I'm probably not.
- 4:06>> I think they probably just lifted it.
- 4:07>> Yeah. And it's, you know what, it's out
- 4:09there in the world
- 4:10>> belongs to them. They can take it. Uh,
- 4:12but that and then I would say I've had a
- 4:14lot of nights kind of similar to our
- 4:16characters first night uh meeting and
- 4:18hanging out where, you know, there's a
- 4:21few drinks and ideas being thrown
- 4:23around. And that's kind of the the fun
- 4:26of the setup of this movie, I think, is
- 4:27that that's how it really can happen.
- 4:30And it's easy to to see a scenario in
- 4:33which someone could say, "Oh, a week or
- 4:35two later, I remember this idea I had
- 4:37the other night," not remembering that
- 4:38it came from a sort of drunken weed
- 4:42smoking night and and then all of a
- 4:45sudden there's this this crazy conflict.
- 4:46So, luckily, I've never had that
- 4:49experience, but certainly uh you know,
- 4:52that songwriting process.
- 4:53>> What was that like when you So, like
- 4:54when you're writing with your brothers,
- 4:55when you were young and first starting,
- 4:57you guys were writing together. How did
- 4:59that happen? Were you like just like,
- 5:00"Oh, let's we're all in let's meet
- 5:02Nick's broom. Let's how to
- 5:04>> It was in our our basement in New Jersey
- 5:06to start. Um, we would go down there
- 5:10just a couple guitars, maybe keyboard,
- 5:12and just hours and hours just kind of
- 5:15like trying to get the song right. And
- 5:16then eventually when we were on the
- 5:18road, it was a hotel room, back of cars,
- 5:21like just wherever we could. Now, you
- 5:24know, I think because we're traveling,
- 5:25so we have our families, everything, we
- 5:27we kind of set aside time to do it. Um,
- 5:30for instance, next next week, we have a
- 5:32a bunch of songwriting sessions set up.
- 5:35And it's kind of a better better
- 5:36structure for for life to happen and to
- 5:38to get the best song.
- 5:39>> Cuz every song I ever wrote,
- 5:45>> it's about you.
- 5:50>> So good. Were you nervous about singing
- 5:52in this movie?
- 5:54>> I was. Yeah, I was nervous. Like I said,
- 5:57I've sung in movies before, but it's
- 6:00always silly. And when you're doing
- 6:03something kind of funny, you're given a
- 6:04lot of leeway. I was going to be doing
- 6:06it with you and John Carney, who's, you
- 6:09know, a musician in his own right. And
- 6:12so this job is always nerve-wracking.
- 6:15Acting, singing, doing anything. you're
- 6:18kind of putting yourself out there and
- 6:19you just kind of, you know, close your
- 6:21eyes and jump in the deep end. So,
- 6:23that's what I did. But, uh, yeah,
- 6:25there's a little a little bit of a
- 6:27nervousness for sure.
- 6:28>> Yeah. Well, you blew everybody away on
- 6:30set.
- 6:30>> Thank you, Nick. Thank you.
- 6:32>> So, uh, do you have a bridge yet?
- 6:33>> No, man. That thing's dogged me for
- 6:36years.
- 6:37>> We could finish this right now.
- 6:38>> I wish. No, I can't. I got to go. My
- 6:40daughter has got to get to school.
- 6:42>> Wait, wait, wait.
- 6:43>> My wife has work. What song is the
- 6:46hottest toddler jam in your house right
- 6:48now?
- 6:49>> Ooh,
- 6:51well, she's she's four. Her daughter's
- 6:54four and she's she's got a a pretty wide
- 6:57range in in, you know, music that she
- 7:00likes. Recently, she was introduced to
- 7:03country
- 7:11>> and she's been singing it non-stop. And
- 7:13there's nothing cuter than a little
- 7:14four-year-old singing that song.
- 7:16>> That's pretty cute.
- 7:17>> Yeah. Uh, speaking of parenting, as a
- 7:20fellow girl dad, what is the best piece
- 7:22of advice you'd give me?
- 7:26>> Well, I think you'd probably doing a
- 7:28good job. And I would, as far as advice,
- 7:31I'd say uh just just be there, right?
- 7:34>> Yeah.
- 7:35>> Let them know that you're This is like
- 7:36I'm not gonna give parenting advice for
- 7:38this is
- 7:40>> I'll tell you.
- 7:41>> No. No. Well, I'll tell I'll I'll I'll
- 7:43we'll talk about it later. I'll give you
- 7:45a crib sheet that I filled out. I always
- 7:48I have it m I on my fridge.
- 7:50>> Perfect.
- 7:51>> I'm like, wait a minute. Should I uh
- 7:56again, I'm going to stop this line of
- 7:57jokes before I start it. The way my
- 8:00brain works is to immediately think of
- 8:03the most uh unsayable,
- 8:06horrible,
- 8:08dis like dark, disgusting joke. And
- 8:14the pauses that I take and I take a lot
- 8:16of pauses you as you can tell
- 8:18>> is me doing the math in my head as to do
- 8:22I say it or how like do I back up back
- 8:24up and it it's usually a long pause
- 8:27because it's like oh no, I got to keep
- 8:28backing up. I'm not even gonna say it.
- 8:30>> That is why we love you.
- 8:31>> Oh, no. That specifically.
- 8:33>> It's
- 8:35Well, then I'll tell you uh my sick
- 8:38jokes when we're done filming. What's
- 8:39the best parenting advice you received?
- 8:42>> Was it my
- 8:45>> do when you think you should say you
- 8:47shouldn't say something, just back it
- 8:48up.
- 8:48>> Just back it up cuz you don't
- 8:50>> It's not advice that I've received. It's
- 8:52it's what I've observed from my own
- 8:55parents and and you know my my brothers
- 8:58and the people I respect. Um in the same
- 9:01way that it's it's awkward I I agree to
- 9:03give someone
- 9:04>> right
- 9:04>> parenting advice. Um because everyone
- 9:06has their own journey with it and it's
- 9:08it's a very personal thing.
- 9:11I've I've been fortunate enough to get
- 9:13to watch the people I love raise their
- 9:16children and and and you know raise me
- 9:18and my brothers and and that is just in
- 9:21action and the what they've done and who
- 9:23they are. That is the best advice I've
- 9:25I've taken in.
- 9:26>> Yeah. You kind of know it when you hear
- 9:27it, don't you? I mean like
- 9:30>> I just read this thing the other day
- 9:32where it's like you got to be it's
- 9:34really important to let your kids make
- 9:36mistakes as a parent. You want to get in
- 9:37and kind of fix everything and make sure
- 9:40everything's okay. But they really need
- 9:41to figure out how to negotiate
- 9:42disappointment and these kinds of
- 9:44things. And it's important to back off.
- 9:46>> Yeah.
- 9:47>> And I remember once reading something
- 9:48that Julia Roberts said that I was like,
- 9:50"Oh my god, that's of course she's so
- 9:52smart." Uh she said, "The best thing
- 9:54that I can do for my children is to love
- 9:56their dad."
- 9:58>> It's beautiful.
- 9:59>> Yeah. Julie Roberts.
- 10:01>> Julia Roberts.
- 10:02>> No, she gets it.
- 10:04>> In this film, we have a physical fight.
- 10:06think it is easy to turn a song into a
- 10:09>> What do you remember from shooting that
- 10:11scene? And who do you think would win if
- 10:13we actually fought?
- 10:16>> Um, well, I remember a lot from when we
- 10:19were filming it. One, it was cold and
- 10:21>> and you had wet and you were in your
- 10:24underwear.
- 10:25>> I negotiated to get a hoodie on because
- 10:27otherwise I would have been truly just
- 10:28>> it was it was it was terrible. Um, but
- 10:31you threw yourself into it and it was
- 10:32you were you were it's very impressive.
- 10:35You were great in that scene and um
- 10:39completely raw and emotional and I I was
- 10:41kind of knocked out um both physically
- 10:44and in terms of your acting ability. If
- 10:47we got into a fight, I think just the
- 10:49very nature of who you are and the
- 10:51nature of who I am, we uh we wouldn't
- 10:54ever even bring ourselves to do it.
- 10:56>> Yeah. Just be like, you know what?
- 10:58>> Let's just stop. What are we chilling?
- 11:00>> I'm sorry.
- 11:00>> I'm sorry, too. You're the best.
- 11:02>> You're the Let's get a beer.
- 11:04>> Technically, you could say no and we
- 11:05would win, but I like to look at it as
- 11:07uh we
- 11:08>> we both won.
- 11:08>> We both win.
- 11:10>> Violence. Violence is you never It
- 11:12doesn't solve anything except in the
- 11:15most extreme circumstances.
- 11:18as a former sexiest man alive. It makes
- 11:20it kind of like as a former as you're as
- 11:23a as a
- 11:24>> for by the way it's not wrong
- 11:28>> as a person on former
- 11:30>> as a sexiest man alive.
- 11:32>> Yes.
- 11:32>> Person. What is your advice? For me,
- 11:37>> what is your advice for me? Nick Jones
- 11:38to be more sexy is the question.
- 11:40>> Oh Jesus Christ. I don't think I don't
- 11:44think you have any trouble there, Nick.
- 11:46Uh,
- 11:47just let him out.
- 11:51Let him hang. Let him hang, bro. By the
- 11:53way, and that's that's the G-rated
- 11:55version of that joke. Let him
- 11:57>> Let him out.
- 11:57>> Let him h get in some air.
- 12:03>> And I didn't specify what. I don't know
- 12:06where your sick minds were going.
- 12:09>> Yeah. Could be my my teeth.
- 12:11>> Yeah. You've got a gorgeous smile. It's
- 12:13It's so It's timeless. It's so sexy. Get
- 12:17them out. Show them.
- 12:20Un unzip those lips and flash them.
- 12:25What's the biggest difference between
- 12:27leaving your trailer for a scene versus
- 12:30hitting the stage for a set?
- 12:32>> I mean, it's the same It's the same
- 12:34thing at the end of the day. You're
- 12:35you're you're
- 12:37putting on a performance. you're you're
- 12:39you know opening up the walls of of your
- 12:42sort of personal life and experience to
- 12:45everyone else to kind of engage with.
- 12:47The only difference is and this is
- 12:48actually not all that interesting but
- 12:50the only difference is before a show I'm
- 12:52relaxed. I might have a little cocktail,
- 12:55get the vibe right. For a scene I'm not
- 12:57doing that.
- 12:58>> Right. Right.
- 12:59>> I'm not doing that.
- 13:01>> No, of course not.
- 13:02>> Of course not. We never did that.
- 13:04>> No,
- 13:04>> we never did. But that's only because
- 13:06it's really hard to find alcohol in
- 13:07Ireland.
- 13:10>> What's the fanciest or most luxurious
- 13:12item on your rider?
- 13:15>> Ants on a log.
- 13:18>> That's a real thing. You really
- 13:19>> I really have that on the rider.
- 13:21>> It's not luxurious or fancy, but it is
- 13:23to me. It's celery,
- 13:26almond butter, peanut butter, and and
- 13:28raisins.
- 13:29It's delicious. It's good protein. Gets
- 13:32me jacked before the show.
- 13:35jacked. You know, it's funny. I don't I
- 13:38don't have a rider. There's nothing I
- 13:40don't demand, but there are some things
- 13:41I like to have. I like to have gum. I
- 13:45chew a lot of gum,
- 13:46>> which is kind of gross.
- 13:48>> But, uh, when I was when I started doing
- 13:53those Marvel movies and I just was on a
- 13:55very strict diet and I wasn't eating and
- 13:57I thought, so I chewed gum and then I
- 13:59never really kind of like stopped. Um,
- 14:03>> I'm an Altoids guy.
- 14:05>> Great.
- 14:06>> I mean,
- 14:06>> great.
- 14:07>> Just pounding the Altoids on set.
- 14:13>> I also love mushroom chocolates.
- 14:17Is there a song that you are
- 14:18professionally jealous of that was
- 14:20almost yours or a song that you really
- 14:23wish you had written?
- 14:25>> There's plenty of songs I wish I had
- 14:27written and I' I've kind of mentioned a
- 14:28few of those. going back to things like
- 14:30a Beatles classic or things like that to
- 14:33more recent things like
- 14:35uh attention by Charlie
- 14:37>> Puth
- 14:42Wish we had that song but there there
- 14:44are a few and I don't want to name them
- 14:46because
- 14:48they are with those other artists now
- 14:49and they're their songs but songs that I
- 14:51cut vocals on that then went a different
- 14:53direction. It's kind of like almost like
- 14:55an audition. This is a thing that
- 14:59some actors have to do. Not not you
- 15:00obviously, but you have to go in and
- 15:02audition for the director.
- 15:03>> Oh my gosh. Yeah. Not I'd do that, too.
- 15:06Yeah.
- 15:07>> Yeah.
- 15:08>> I mean, rarely, but I do do it.
- 15:11>> Um, but yeah, I lost those songs and
- 15:13that was a bummer cuz you hear on the
- 15:14radio and go, that should have been me.
- 15:16>> I could tell within 2 minutes of meeting
- 15:18you, you are not just some boy band guy
- 15:21>> and you are too good for that wedding
- 15:23band. I learned that you could be an
- 15:25incredibly talented musician and still
- 15:28be like the coolest, nicest guy. Uh,
- 15:32Nick, that is you. You have a real way
- 15:35of conveying um emotion and showing
- 15:39exactly what your character is thinking
- 15:41without saying anything, which is just
- 15:44the best thing to be able to do when
- 15:47you're acting. Um, so I I uh I was
- 15:51really impressed.
- 15:53I know how to do that, too. So, I didn't
- 15:55really learn it from you, but uh but I I
- 15:59did I I'm only kidding. I was like,
- 16:02really good at that. And uh I got to I
- 16:05got to try that. I got to steal that.
- 16:08>> That's very kind. Um as far as what I
- 16:11learned from from you on set, um
- 16:16there were so many things. I mean, one
- 16:17of the the most exciting parts of of
- 16:21stepping into
- 16:23this this film with you, but but
- 16:25specifically just any acting projects
- 16:28I've been fortunate enough to do is
- 16:30>> you you kind of do learn something from
- 16:32everybody and you mentioned some stories
- 16:34about be with Jack Nicholson, other
- 16:36people you work with, but it's just so
- 16:37cool to see that even at your level and
- 16:40with your experience that there's still
- 16:42that ability to to kind of be a sponge
- 16:44and I I tried to do that with you so
- 16:45much so to the point where on my latest
- 16:48film that I just finished, White
- 16:49Elephant, with another co-star of yours,
- 16:52Kathern Newton.
- 16:53>> Yeah.
- 16:53>> I was talking about little things I saw
- 16:55you doing and I actually found myself in
- 16:57one take doing something that was like
- 16:59something you might do.
- 17:01>> Um, and I was like, you know, what a
- 17:03cool thing to get to just be that sponge
- 17:05and and continue to to learn and grow.
- 17:07So, thanks,
- 17:08>> man. Thanks. I back back at you, dude.
- 17:12There there is there were things that
- 17:13you would do. Um
- 17:16and now I feel bad that I was even
- 17:18making a even a silly joke about I don't
- 17:20know how to do that because I really
- 17:21don't. Um no there are things you do. Uh
- 17:25that was really amazing that I think oh
- 17:28I I would like to learn that but I can't
- 17:31because I think it's God-given. It's
- 17:33innate. And you know when we would do
- 17:36the song and I would listen to you play
- 17:40it and then I listen to you sing it.
- 17:47>> You did things with like phrasing and
- 17:50the way because I recorded a version of
- 17:52it too and it's like okay well this is
- 17:54how you record this song. This is how
- 17:56this song goes. Obviously, you can make
- 17:57things your own and all of that, but you
- 18:00you did something with the song and this
- 18:04phrasing that I was like, "Oh my god,
- 18:06that is so good." My brain just would
- 18:09not work that way. And so, it's like I
- 18:11would like to I would like to learn have
- 18:14the courage to at least attempt
- 18:16something like that, but I wouldn't have
- 18:17the ability to do it. So, uh that is
- 18:21honestly, uh something that I think
- 18:25about every time I hear it. Actually,
- 18:26when I hear in the movie and I hear I'm
- 18:27like, "Wow, that's really cool." That's
- 18:29the difference between somebody who's
- 18:31like kind of singing and playing music
- 18:33and then an actual musician and uh you
- 18:36brought au authenticity to it. So, um to
- 18:40the entire proceeding to the movie. So,
- 18:42that was kind of cool to be around.
- 18:43>> That's very nice of you.
- 18:46>> I'm having a heart attack, by the way.
- 18:47That's what you're coming for me.
