  33. 1:35good afternoon my name is Alex lesko I'm
  34. 1:38a retired firefighter and I worked for
  35. 1:4025 years in the city of trappiness a
  36. 1:42fire pyramid you know in city of Trenton
  37. 1:45we have a lot of Industry a lot of big
  38. 1:48Industries power plant Auto Factory
  39. 1:50builds engines we had a steel factory
  40. 1:52different chemical factories and I bring
  41. 1:54that up because there were many times
  42. 1:55where I was on duty I actually got
  43. 1:58called to other people's place of work
  44. 2:01[Applause]
  45. 2:02and then some unfortunate situations
  46. 2:05they died that's what we're here to talk
  47. 2:07to you about is keeping you safe in your
  48. 2:08workplace the company I worked for now
  49. 2:11is called pastors Edge fastest started
  50. 2:13because a young individual working a
  51. 2:16summer job was asked to do a certain
  52. 2:18tasks did the task that's the visibility
  53. 2:20ended up losing his life doing it and
  54. 2:23that's how passes began passes actually
  55. 2:25stands for parents or student safety
  56. 2:27employment standards passes works well
  57. 2:30with myosia we are not miosha we have
  58. 2:33worked alongside of my old show for
  59. 2:34quite a number of years I also has been
  60. 2:37around for over 40 years
  61. 2:39they have a difficult job anybody has a
  62. 2:41job that you are
  63. 2:42basically enforcing workplace safety
  64. 2:45rules laws codes stuff like that they're
  65. 2:47actually rules and laws are called
  66. 2:49standards a standard is simply this it's
  67. 2:51a written document and it tells you in
  68. 2:53great detail how to do something it's
  69. 2:55when you stay within the standards going
  70. 2:56to be fine you deviate that standard
  71. 2:58trying to take a shortcut make you have
  72. 3:01a better or different way maybe omit a
  73. 3:03step that's usually when something bad
  74. 3:05happens so we definitely want you to
  75. 3:06stay right within those standards okay I
  76. 3:10also will do any and everything they can
  77. 3:11to help make our workplace as safe as
  78. 3:13possible they even have programs where
  79. 3:15they'll come into a business and
  80. 3:18um they will watch how they run their
  81. 3:20business and they will give them some
  82. 3:22pointers and tips on how to do things
  83. 3:24safely they can insert and do some
  84. 3:27safety and health programs and a lot of
  85. 3:29times this could be done on their grant
  86. 3:31money through iosia through their set
  87. 3:33training okay passes is a copyrighted
  88. 3:36class it means if you were to take some
  89. 3:38pictures or copy this and show them
  90. 3:40again without information get yourself
  91. 3:42in trouble so don't believe that anyway
  92. 3:43we have a basic mission statement it's
  93. 3:45real simple we're a community Grace
  94. 3:47based group and we're dedicated to
  95. 3:49teaching you guys you're the Next
  96. 3:51Generation Workforce the fundamentals of
  97. 3:53workplace safety awareness what exactly
  98. 3:55do we want you to be aware of everything
  99. 3:58that we can think of to help you keep
  100. 4:00you safe know that you have rights know
  101. 4:02that with ricegum responsibility we'll
  102. 4:04talk about that a little later what are
  103. 4:05some of the dangers that are out there
  104. 4:07how quickly things can turn on you we'll
  105. 4:09try to give you as much information as
  106. 4:11we can and we do that really in three
  107. 4:13simple goals okay our first goal is this
  108. 4:16we want to have a great attitude when it
  109. 4:18comes to workplace safety workplace
  110. 4:20safety can be tough it can be very
  111. 4:22boring at times
  112. 4:23um when I was your age being lecture two
  113. 4:26and I wasn't very good at it I was the
  114. 4:28one that was personal with my head on
  115. 4:29the desk really fighting to stay awake
  116. 4:31there's another thing that can be taught
  117. 4:33for safety training you've been trained
  118. 4:36in safety your entire life from the time
  119. 4:38you're learning to walk man somebody's
  120. 4:39telling you don't touch the stove a time
  121. 4:42don't go there and play that electrical
  122. 4:43outlet you might zap yourself don't go
  123. 4:46in the street you might get run over
  124. 4:47we're hearing these things the whole
  125. 4:49time you're growing up even to the point
  126. 4:50you're in high school now going through
  127. 4:52your driver's ed you're going to get the
  128. 4:53car keys right
  129. 4:55um somebody's telling me make sure you
  130. 4:57wear your seatbelt stay off your cell
  131. 4:59phone make sure you're done speeding
  132. 5:01don't get distracted without music more
  133. 5:03and more safety training just so that
  134. 5:05you don't have that one little slip up
  135. 5:07to change your life forever right so now
  136. 5:09you're in the working partner and um
  137. 5:11they're telling you how to stay safe at
  138. 5:13work let's make sure we're paying
  139. 5:15attention Okay we don't want any of
  140. 5:17those types of things to pull our
  141. 5:19attention away to where something else
  142. 5:22gets hurt so make sure we're paying
  143. 5:24close attention our second goal is to be
  144. 5:26alert this has to be alerted on the job
  145. 5:27why not be alert all the time people get
  146. 5:29hurt all the time I'm not just talking
  147. 5:31at work
  148. 5:33um you know if you know the building
  149. 5:34codes and safety codes and you know all
  150. 5:36that to a t that's awesome and really we
  151. 5:38should all strive to do that I'm even
  152. 5:40talking simpler than that Common Sense
  153. 5:41stuff are you working in a cluttered
  154. 5:43work area and yeah ropes and cords or
  155. 5:45hoses all over the place trip assets
  156. 5:47right so there are water on the floor a
  157. 5:49slip Hazard somebody gonna do something
  158. 5:50about that I've actually been on calls
  159. 5:53where uh the guy was walking into a
  160. 5:55building for work and um the rug at the
  161. 5:58doorway was just all wrinkled up I got
  162. 6:01hit at just running tripping fell and he
  163. 6:02smacked his head on the cement floor I
  164. 6:04ended up with a close hand injury brain
  165. 6:06bleed right I never fully recovered
  166. 6:09his family was even affected by this
  167. 6:11because they now have to take care of
  168. 6:13somebody who fell over what a trip but
  169. 6:16they slipped on a raw nature right these
  170. 6:19are the things that we want you to be
  171. 6:21Keen enough to see it fix it only takes
  172. 6:23a few seconds one of the calls we had a
  173. 6:25family that we're cooking dinner on the
  174. 6:26stove right big old Skillet frying pan
  175. 6:29uh Anthony was sticking right out in
  176. 6:31front of the island this little nine
  177. 6:32year old comes running by almost that
  178. 6:34handle on accident it flipped that pot
  179. 6:35I'll pick this kid's ribs it's burning
  180. 6:37it all the way out
  181. 6:39um we give some famous it took at the
  182. 6:41University of Michigan's Garden Center
  183. 6:42totally avoidable if we are alert enough
  184. 6:45to see that that handle in the walkway
  185. 6:46is a hazard and let's just slide that
  186. 6:48out of the way those are those types of
  187. 6:50things that we're talking about to give
  188. 6:52you that certain alertness on the job
  189. 6:54okay and then our third goal
  190. 6:56in today's day I think we're all getting
  191. 6:58a great understanding of personal
  192. 6:59protective equipment while we're a mess
  193. 7:01you know it's one of those things but in
  194. 7:04the workplace this has been around for a
  195. 7:05long time here in certain areas you're a
  196. 7:07personal protective equipment experiment
  197. 7:09make sure you're wearing it whether it's
  198. 7:11a breathing mask like we're all getting
  199. 7:12used to and the different kinds of
  200. 7:14breathing breathing masks safety glasses
  201. 7:16are hard hat maybe proper gloves and
  202. 7:18apron even proper shoes whether they're
  203. 7:21steel toe or non-skid if you're supposed
  204. 7:23to wear these things let's make sure we
  205. 7:25do understand this the rules change on
  206. 7:28what our PPE should be in the workplace
  207. 7:31really based on how many people are
  208. 7:32getting hurt what can we do to make it
  209. 7:34safer what can we wear to make it safe I
  210. 7:36found out for years and years and people
  211. 7:38working in environments and Industry
  212. 7:40that were subjected to a lot of noises
  213. 7:43hearing stuff so missile Bible we
  214. 7:45finally caught up with that number of
  215. 7:46years ago that we should wear hearing
  216. 7:48protection because there's so many
  217. 7:49people late in life especially
  218. 7:50Industrials like people that really
  219. 7:52can't hear so if you're supposed to wear
  220. 7:54your stuff let's make sure we put it on
  221. 7:55now I'm going to cover a lot of topics
  222. 7:58you know you'll work real hard you're
  223. 8:01going through high school doing a lot of
  224. 8:02things trying to build yourself up to
  225. 8:04become more and more employable I call
  226. 8:06that building a resume and um there's a
  227. 8:08lot of things that we do to make that
  228. 8:10look good but you know there's things
  229. 8:12that you can ask before you even get
  230. 8:14hired in regards to safety let's say you
  231. 8:16land that interview it's a dream job and
  232. 8:18um you're sitting there thinking that
  233. 8:20that employer can ask you anything they
  234. 8:22want if you don't have the right answer
  235. 8:23you're not getting a job and that's
  236. 8:25partially true but every one of those
  237. 8:27scenarios I've ever been in I've had the
  238. 8:29opportunity to ask a question back let's
  239. 8:31make sure we take that time to ask
  240. 8:32what's important to you if you hire me
  241. 8:34do you have a retirement plan you have
  242. 8:36health care can I move up in your
  243. 8:37comment I mean great questions in fact
  244. 8:39those are good questions that an
  245. 8:41interviewer would like to hear because
  246. 8:43there gives them an idea if you get
  247. 8:44hired you plan on staying but also don't
  248. 8:46be afraid to ask questions about safety
  249. 8:50what is your safety program do I need
  250. 8:52personal uh protective here to come in
  251. 8:54are there dangerous areas at places that
  252. 8:56we should stay away from things like
  253. 8:58that and what about after you get hired
  254. 9:00keep asking things like that are really
  255. 9:03important
  256. 9:03um you know I don't know why boss's
  257. 9:05supervisors business owners sometimes
  258. 9:08they're just so intimidating tough to
  259. 9:10talk to you're afraid you might say or
  260. 9:12do the wrong thing in front of them
  261. 9:13and don't be afraid of that most of
  262. 9:15those people are just like you and me I
  263. 9:17mean they're they're they're good people
  264. 9:19they just have a different job and
  265. 9:21mindset listen I know you're as a
  266. 9:23firefighter I've worked about 17 18
  267. 9:25years with same group of guys and my one
  268. 9:28guy a good friend of mine I actually got
  269. 9:30called up to be our chief no he's in
  270. 9:31charge of our part
  271. 9:33so this guy walks in one day with his
  272. 9:36nice white shirt he has a big old gold
  273. 9:38badge and the look on his face was
  274. 9:40different to me now I know this guy
  275. 9:41forever and it just looked different I'm
  276. 9:43thinking oh no now he's one of those
  277. 9:45intimidating bosses let me start talking
  278. 9:47a little bit really he's the same old
  279. 9:49happy-go-lucky guy but don't know me
  280. 9:51when that guy showed up to work every
  281. 9:52day he tried to be the best firefighter
  282. 9:54you can be the day he walked in with
  283. 9:57that white shirt on he wanted us all to
  284. 9:59be the best firefighters we can be and
  285. 10:01you can see that extra responsibility
  286. 10:03all over his face
  287. 10:04so don't misread that there are people
  288. 10:06that aren't approachable and you can ask
  289. 10:08questions especially when it comes to
  290. 10:09your gut feeling if you think
  291. 10:11something's not right now the state puts
  292. 10:13out this brochure it's an extreme safety
  293. 10:15brochure for the working teenager
  294. 10:17it's basically an outline of the things
  295. 10:19that we're going to talk about for for
  296. 10:21the next hour right in fact the first
  297. 10:23thing we're talking about is in that
  298. 10:24lower right corner is how many young
  299. 10:25people actually get hurt or die at work
  300. 10:28and the numbers aren't very good we have
  301. 10:3060 to 70 kids every year your age go to
  302. 10:33work and never go home wants too many we
  303. 10:36have 200 000 kids end up in an emergency
  304. 10:39room in Urgent Care maybe the first aid
  305. 10:41office because they got hurt at work
  306. 10:42we're talking about over 500 and some a
  307. 10:45day
  308. 10:46we need to be better we need to make
  309. 10:48sure that we stay focused you know one
  310. 10:49of the things that we found that can be
  311. 10:51somewhat of a distraction is this thing
  312. 10:53right how many people we know are on
  313. 10:55their cell phones all the time right and
  314. 10:57and we're addicted to Facebook Instagram
  315. 10:59Twitter snap whatever you got all these
  316. 11:02things right at your fingertips right I
  317. 11:04actually believe that it's pretty
  318. 11:05awesome I grew up my friends they were
  319. 11:08within a couple city blocks you guys
  320. 11:09could communicate with people all over
  321. 11:12the country with one of these which I
  322. 11:13think is great but there is a time and
  323. 11:15place you're performing a task you're
  324. 11:17doing some function you're doing
  325. 11:18something that'd be screw up you're
  326. 11:19going to hurt somebody let's not let
  327. 11:21this be the reason right it's
  328. 11:23mind-boggling people every day operating
  329. 11:25machine how many injuries and accidents
  330. 11:27they call because talking about driving
  331. 11:29a car those numbers any impaired driver
  332. 11:32know because people are on that thing so
  333. 11:34let's say let's make sure that we
  334. 11:36separate from that when we're doing
  335. 11:37something especially with the machine
  336. 11:38now I was told that if I was going to
  337. 11:41show you guys any pictures that aren't
  338. 11:42very nice I should tell you ahead of
  339. 11:44time I had two coming up this first one
  340. 11:46here is a chemical burn this burden this
  341. 11:49uh nasty stuffing on someone's legs
  342. 11:51eaten away at the flesh whatever it is
  343. 11:53it's going to continue to do it till
  344. 11:55it's neutralized very very painful right
  345. 11:57there's an electricity uh situation
  346. 12:00this is actually something you're going
  347. 12:02to electroduce an exit wound of a
  348. 12:04forearm right listen you come in contact
  349. 12:06with any energized wire right you can
  350. 12:09see that bare wire and your body talks
  351. 12:11to something else your body is a great
  352. 12:13conductor of electricity it's going to
  353. 12:14shoot right through you again that's an
  354. 12:16exit when I'll get that off of there
  355. 12:17anytime that you're working if you can
  356. 12:20see where two wires are twisted together
  357. 12:21you shouldn't be able to that should be
  358. 12:23in a closed box
  359. 12:25if you have frame wires A lot of times
  360. 12:28those wires where you can see is right
  361. 12:29at the end of the cord right we can plug
  362. 12:31it in right you see that and you have
  363. 12:33that bare wire get that stuff out of
  364. 12:35service make sure it gets repaired and
  365. 12:37gets replaced uh so that we keep
  366. 12:38ourselves safe now closing passes got
  367. 12:41started because this uh young kid died
  368. 12:43at work his name was Chris Palazzo
  369. 12:46and this incident happened actually that
  370. 12:48time I grew up
  371. 12:49um a couple of firefighters that I know
  372. 12:52great friends of mine on our emergency
  373. 12:54response team ended up on the scene
  374. 12:57um Kim was told to do a job right the
  375. 12:58plant was in a complete shutdown weren't
  376. 13:00doing anything except we ended up
  377. 13:02getting it ready to restart his job was
  378. 13:04to clean out a water tank this
  379. 13:06supposedly had only ever had water in it
  380. 13:08this tank was huge you could fit
  381. 13:09probably six eight people in it it's how
  382. 13:11big it was and he was just going to go
  383. 13:12and clean up the inside so here he is in
  384. 13:14this tank uncovered some really nasty
  385. 13:16stuff right it's overcome down he goes
  386. 13:18he was by himself and um there was
  387. 13:21another guy that was just outside the
  388. 13:23tank right and um he realized that this
  389. 13:25kid was in there for some time and he
  390. 13:28hadn't heard from him so he walked over
  391. 13:29and looked inside the tank sure enough
  392. 13:31here you have this kid was laying down
  393. 13:32the face of this thing I actually
  394. 13:33believe by the time this guy saw him he
  395. 13:35was already gone and so this guy yelled
  396. 13:37for help and he did what any one of us
  397. 13:39to do he jumped in there to help this
  398. 13:41kid but you got to really be careful if
  399. 13:43something bad happens those first few
  400. 13:46minutes right now that actually become
  401. 13:47more hazardous because people get what
  402. 13:49we call tunnel vision police officers
  403. 13:51and firefighters we are trained that
  404. 13:53even though we're there for a certain
  405. 13:55Hazard or an incident we maintain and
  406. 13:57try to keep in line the things that our
  407. 14:00potential hazards to us right best
  408. 14:02example I can give you if someone
  409. 14:03getting television ladies driving down
  410. 14:06the highway right and she sees a minivan
  411. 14:08lose control and it's rolling on its
  412. 14:10side laying in the medium and jumps out
  413. 14:12of her car ladies out medical background
  414. 14:14right runs across the street going to
  415. 14:15check on everybody at a minivan the next
  416. 14:17car coming down the road was also
  417. 14:19looking at the minivan didn't see Lady
  418. 14:20ran over that lady would have never
  419. 14:22crossed that road without looking both
  420. 14:24ways but she had that tunnel vision
  421. 14:26right and that's kind of what we get
  422. 14:28when we're going and trying to help
  423. 14:29somebody right this situation there were
  424. 14:32a lot of federal state agencies and
  425. 14:34people that heavy fines and stuff on
  426. 14:36this company called karmises in wyanda
  427. 14:38where this kid died never brought the
  428. 14:39kid back right so that's why we want to
  429. 14:42make sure that you guys understand the
  430. 14:44things that we're trying to train you in
  431. 14:45and being safe
  432. 14:48foreign
  433. 14:53[Music]
  434. 15:02on July 16 1992 a promising college
  435. 15:06student named Christopher palazzola died
  436. 15:09on the job at karmazin Products
  437. 15:11Corporation in Wyandotte Michigan
  438. 15:13it was not a tragedy because his death
  439. 15:15was entirely avoidable
  440. 15:18Chris was working a summer job at
  441. 15:20karmazum when he was ordered to shovel
  442. 15:22sludge in a closed space water tank
  443. 15:25during a routine maintenance shutdown he
  444. 15:28was not provided with the requisite
  445. 15:29respiratory equipment or safety
  446. 15:32harnesses
  447. 15:33he uncovered a deadly solvent while
  448. 15:35shoveling and died in the tank
  449. 15:38in the aftermath carmism was fined by
  450. 15:41miosha and later the Environmental
  451. 15:43Protection Agency
  452. 15:45but the sanctions mean little
  453. 15:47Chris's death devastated loved ones and
  454. 15:50cut short the life of a 20 year old
  455. 15:52engineering student who excelled in
  456. 15:54music Sports and was engaged to be
  457. 15:56married
  458. 15:58the passes Edge safety program was
  459. 16:00created in 1995 to teach adolescents to
  460. 16:03protect themselves in the workplace
  461. 16:05passes is taught throughout Michigan and
  462. 16:08the Midwest bringing safety life skills
  463. 16:10to students teachers and the community
  464. 16:12it is dedicated to Chris
  465. 16:21and say no Chris Guyton was called a
  466. 16:23confined space a combined space is just
  467. 16:25an area not there for humans to stay
  468. 16:26very long you go in you do your job to
  469. 16:29get out of there the biggest issue you
  470. 16:30had in a confined space is do you have
  471. 16:32enough good air
  472. 16:33you have enough oxygen in that area that
  473. 16:35you're working are there any nasty gases
  474. 16:37something that's going to you know get
  475. 16:39to you knock you down and you're
  476. 16:40overcome now
  477. 16:41um these three pictures that just popped
  478. 16:43up the top one you see this guy in this
  479. 16:45manhole he's got no protection you can
  480. 16:47see his face no breathing apparatus
  481. 16:49nothing like that he's going underground
  482. 16:50especially on the ground you have to
  483. 16:52worry about the air that you have right
  484. 16:55um rail cars and silos those two other
  485. 16:57pictures those are things that uh you
  486. 16:59know people have to enter them sometimes
  487. 17:00whether it's inspect repair clean
  488. 17:03whatever it is extensive amount of
  489. 17:05training and practice going into those
  490. 17:06small areas this is just a picture of a
  491. 17:09practice setting I want to point out
  492. 17:10three things though a guy in the red
  493. 17:11shirt he's got a harness he's got a
  494. 17:14cable and he's got a firecracker now if
  495. 17:16this guy is going down this ladder at a
  496. 17:18gradual Pace it'll allow if he slips and
  497. 17:20Falls that that cable is kind of fancy
  498. 17:22he'll only fall maybe a foot foot and a
  499. 17:24half
  500. 17:25and it locks in and prevents them from
  501. 17:27falling the rest of the way down so
  502. 17:28safety feature you see this part
  503. 17:30concerned himself his partner's harm
  504. 17:31himself because if he gets into any
  505. 17:32trouble this guy can hook up right away
  506. 17:34and get down there and help him out
  507. 17:35always practicing with stuff like that
  508. 17:37more and more with uh with a lot of the
  509. 17:40construction and things are going on
  510. 17:41every year
  511. 17:43um we find that the different injuries
  512. 17:45and accidents that happen at work
  513. 17:46there's almost always one or two that
  514. 17:48have to do with a trench because it's
  515. 17:49water main breaks there's new
  516. 17:50construction people go down into these
  517. 17:52trenches and they collapse on them right
  518. 17:53just know that you have to when you're
  519. 17:55doing some of these
  520. 17:57um trench stuff you have to have the
  521. 17:59right people certified people you have
  522. 18:00to make that the sides are protected
  523. 18:02from caving in they just call it showing
  524. 18:04up now when they had incidents in the
  525. 18:06workplace and today's day if they have
  526. 18:09an incident you know you'll have the
  527. 18:10safety people come in the fire report
  528. 18:12across the country everybody has access
  529. 18:14to that report
  530. 18:15back in the 80s it wasn't so this
  531. 18:17slide's a little older and it shows you
  532. 18:19so they compiled all these things and
  533. 18:21they try to you know see what's
  534. 18:23relatable and they found that they had a
  535. 18:24lot of people that were getting hurt or
  536. 18:26dying in confined spaces so they found
  537. 18:28that you know they'd have an
  538. 18:29instrumentation they have ventilation
  539. 18:31they had training no supervisors
  540. 18:32different things like that the whole
  541. 18:34entire reason I keep this slide on is
  542. 18:36because of that last number 64 of the
  543. 18:38people that died in a confined space
  544. 18:40that was not part of their job to be
  545. 18:42there you're not paid you're not trained
  546. 18:44you're not protected and it's hazardous
  547. 18:46the safest thing to stay away from right
  548. 18:48just seems like such a simple thing to
  549. 18:50say but people love to go and explore so
  550. 18:53make sure you keep yourself safe all
  551. 18:56right real quick let's talk about
  552. 18:57construction safety only then we bring
  553. 19:00this up because the construction
  554. 19:01industry is one of the most hazardous
  555. 19:03Industries we have in the state of
  556. 19:04Michigan and the U.S in the entire world
  557. 19:07we're in Michigan four percent of the
  558. 19:09workforce that means four out of every
  559. 19:10100 people that have a job working in
  560. 19:12construction business right they come
  561. 19:15for almost half of the people that die
  562. 19:16at work this is what you know you show
  563. 19:19up to work every day and your work
  564. 19:20environment is different today than it
  565. 19:21was yesterday it's going to be different
  566. 19:23tomorrow things are ever changed some of
  567. 19:26these poor construction workers they'll
  568. 19:27show up on a site they didn't get the
  569. 19:29proper inspections and stuff to move on
  570. 19:31and continue building whatever they're
  571. 19:32doing their their company will send them
  572. 19:34to another site could be miles away and
  573. 19:37um they just don't have that familiarity
  574. 19:39with the place that with that they're
  575. 19:40working okay different stuff they deal
  576. 19:43with is dust and dust particles we call
  577. 19:45it silica
  578. 19:46um you know extensive amount of things
  579. 19:48that you have to deal with
  580. 19:50um in the construction business
  581. 19:51workplace deaths you know this uh this
  582. 19:54slide shows over the last number of
  583. 19:55years how many people have actually died
  584. 19:57that meiosa has investigated and um you
  585. 20:01know how are these people dying Falls
  586. 20:03Transportation incidents electrocutions
  587. 20:06answer the substances crushed injuries
  588. 20:09all kinds of things right
  589. 20:10um we're going to talk about Falls here
  590. 20:12in a sec and
  591. 20:15um I have to warn you there's another
  592. 20:16picture coming up and this guy fell and
  593. 20:19it's kind of an ugly picture felt enough
  594. 20:21Force then shoved the bone right through
  595. 20:24the skin right especially if you fall in
  596. 20:25your head without much force man your
  597. 20:27face is going to be way worse than what
  598. 20:28is it that we are actually falling off
  599. 20:30of anything can get you above great
  600. 20:32maybe you're on a roll maybe you're on
  601. 20:34scaffolding you're not allowed right I
  602. 20:37told you how many young people die a
  603. 20:38year do you know one in four 25 of the
  604. 20:41young people that die at work that I can
  605. 20:43fall in off of something there's a
  606. 20:44problem it's prohibited if you're not
  607. 20:46yet 18 you're not supposed to be on a
  608. 20:48roof on scaffolding on ladders right now
  609. 20:51when I was a kid between my Junior and
  610. 20:53Senior year I actually worked for a
  611. 20:55roofing company my job I grabbed those
  612. 20:57bundles of shingles go up the ladder put
  613. 20:58them on the roof come back get some more
  614. 21:00right today's day you can't do that you
  615. 21:02can't even go up on that roof to hand
  616. 21:04somebody a piece of equipment if you're
  617. 21:06not yet 18. all right
  618. 21:08let's talk about letters
  619. 21:10um you know a couple things happen when
  620. 21:12you're dealing with the ladder
  621. 21:14um you know I've been on so many calls
  622. 21:15where we've had ladder injuries and
  623. 21:17you're saying comes down to one of two
  624. 21:19things one is you probably didn't have
  625. 21:21the right ladder for the job and the
  626. 21:23other is you didn't put it in the right
  627. 21:24spot and you tried to make it work I
  628. 21:26mean you've got those step ladders I've
  629. 21:28seen something on the stepladder trying
  630. 21:29to read something over the head I wasn't
  631. 21:31tall enough so what do they do to drag
  632. 21:32the table or set the alarm on the table
  633. 21:34and try to go if they're going too bad
  634. 21:36or or how about in this time of year
  635. 21:38everybody loves to put lights outside
  636. 21:39man they light up their whole house and
  637. 21:41I think it's kind of cool but it's got
  638. 21:42to do it safe you got that ladder
  639. 21:44leaning up there and you're hooking
  640. 21:46those lights on the gutters and Paul
  641. 21:48said he only got about three more likes
  642. 21:50to hang up but you can barely reach them
  643. 21:52right whatever you don't do that
  644. 21:53Balancing Act trying to reach over
  645. 21:55certainly don't grab on that ladder
  646. 21:57which I knew the whole thing by jumping
  647. 21:58over right get down and move the ladder
  648. 22:01that's the part that we don't take the
  649. 22:03time to maintain our own safety okay
  650. 22:05those A-frame letters they open like
  651. 22:07this the little tray thing comes down
  652. 22:09that tray thing it's not meant for you
  653. 22:10to stand out it's rated for a paint can
  654. 22:12right people stand on it all the time so
  655. 22:15we get a call guys laying in his garage
  656. 22:17all tangled up in a ladder right we show
  657. 22:19up no idea whose house it was it was my
  658. 22:22boss it was my city manager right there
  659. 22:24he is laying on his uh garage floor got
  660. 22:27a broken leg we hook him up give him
  661. 22:30some medicine take him to the hospital
  662. 22:31on the way to the hospital I'm sitting
  663. 22:32in the back with him I asked him how
  664. 22:35this happened
  665. 22:36says he knew he should have done it but
  666. 22:38he was on the second from the top step
  667. 22:39so his feet are even with that trade
  668. 22:41thing and um because his feet were on
  669. 22:44the same step he felt a little uneasy a
  670. 22:46little off balance so he thought he'd
  671. 22:47put his foot over on that tray thing for
  672. 22:49a little bit just for a little stability
  673. 22:50told me he did plan on putting much
  674. 22:52weight on it but he got back to working
  675. 22:54over his head but he realized he had all
  676. 22:56this weight on it and the ladder gave
  677. 22:58way his leg got tangled up and down he
  678. 23:00went on the ladder and his life right so
  679. 23:02we got to make sure we don't take that
  680. 23:04chance one other thing about those
  681. 23:05A-frame ladders the very top of it by
  682. 23:08definition it's not even called the
  683. 23:10steps it's called the cap they call it a
  684. 23:12cat because he should be on it it's just
  685. 23:14too unsafe now the fire service we use a
  686. 23:17straight beam ladder for everything we
  687. 23:19do and um sometimes we have two or three
  688. 23:21sections and we get really high up in
  689. 23:23here before we put one of those up we do
  690. 23:25what's called a four-point check there's
  691. 23:27two points that rest on the top and two
  692. 23:28on the bottom those two on the bottom
  693. 23:30I'm gonna make sure I have good even
  694. 23:31flat surface right I want to make sure
  695. 23:34at all possible I get the same surface
  696. 23:36so that'll put one of those beams in the
  697. 23:38cement the other in the grass I get 30
  698. 23:40feet in here it starts to dig into that
  699. 23:42grass I could be in some serious trouble
  700. 23:43right how about the two points on the
  701. 23:46top on the top I want to make sure that
  702. 23:48there's no overhang and then that's an
  703. 23:49even surface I don't want to put my
  704. 23:51ladder near a tree if I'm climbing up
  705. 23:53that ladder in a branch happens to catch
  706. 23:55my clothing completely right off of that
  707. 23:57lag don't rush that ladder on the window
  708. 23:59you rested on a window and that glass
  709. 24:01breaks you're underneath it your glass
  710. 24:03is going to fall on you most importantly
  711. 24:05though I mean our ladders are all
  712. 24:06aluminum devices
  713. 24:07if I put that aluminum ladder and it
  714. 24:09comes in contact with an energized wire
  715. 24:12it now energizes that ladder and it
  716. 24:15energizes me so you really have to be
  717. 24:16careful when you put one of those up now
  718. 24:19so put one up
  719. 24:20a lot of people don't know what to do
  720. 24:22and really if you had if I had a 12 foot
  721. 24:23straight beam aluminum ladder right here
  722. 24:25they're actually very light I mean they
  723. 24:27had to grab that thing in the middle
  724. 24:28carry it or whatever right
  725. 24:30it's when you don't know what you're
  726. 24:31doing maybe you go down to the very end
  727. 24:33and you grab that thing and you're
  728. 24:35trying to move it around and now most of
  729. 24:37it's over your head and it's real
  730. 24:39awkward to try and get on the wall
  731. 24:40you're banging into stuff right so how
  732. 24:43do you maintain total control you grab
  733. 24:45that thing in the middle and the part
  734. 24:46that you're going to put up against the
  735. 24:48wall uh that you're gonna put on the
  736. 24:49ground put it right up against the wall
  737. 24:51the part you're actually going to climb
  738. 24:52up put it face down walk out to the very
  739. 24:55end around bend your knees pick that
  740. 24:57thing up turn and face it and then you
  741. 24:59walk it up to the wall and you press it
  742. 25:01right up against the wall now you're in
  743. 25:02full control and then you grab the
  744. 25:03bottom and you pull it out now you need
  745. 25:05the proper angle what is that angle 75
  746. 25:08degrees it means every four feet up you
  747. 25:10pull the bottom on a foot so when you
  748. 25:12put a battery you go down all five
  749. 25:14so let's buy you guys sometimes more
  750. 25:15paper we need to get up on that roof we
  751. 25:18need to get up on that roof to help our
  752. 25:19other firefighters here's the reason say
  753. 25:22you got a fire inside a building and uh
  754. 25:24it's getting super hot it's got that
  755. 25:26thick black smoke right and the more the
  756. 25:28hotter it gets the more smoke it puts
  757. 25:30out
  758. 25:30we get up on that roof so we can clutch
  759. 25:32I get a coal in it and it works like a
  760. 25:34chimney all that heat takes that super
  761. 25:37thick black smoke pushes it out so the
  762. 25:40firefighters on the ground floor can see
  763. 25:41they can find the fire they find people
  764. 25:43way faster and we still don't even do
  765. 25:45that without some kind of a safety check
  766. 25:47our rule of thumb for firefighters who
  767. 25:49did that thing up there as quick as we
  768. 25:51can we hit it close and by our policy
  769. 25:53the first guy on that ladder has got to
  770. 25:54stop on the first phone reach out and
  771. 25:56grab it along even with his shoulders
  772. 25:57now but my body feels like I'm straight
  773. 25:59up and down I know I got a decent angle
  774. 26:01on the plan if I was to step up feel
  775. 26:03like I'm leaning back I didn't know my
  776. 26:04ladder is too upright I need to make an
  777. 26:06adjustment for it just another part of
  778. 26:08an essay I
  779. 26:10let's talk about lifting all right
  780. 26:12that's a picture of a spine
  781. 26:14um you know there's some certain
  782. 26:16occupations inherently they have bad
  783. 26:18backs right uh firefighters are one
  784. 26:20healthcare workers right so you're
  785. 26:22you're helping move and roll people and
  786. 26:24sometimes you're helping them walk and
  787. 26:26then they pass out ladder carriers
  788. 26:27construction trades people
  789. 26:29a lot of these people end up hurting
  790. 26:31their back and sometimes it's just
  791. 26:33unavoidant we do the best you can trying
  792. 26:35not to let that happen but every chance
  793. 26:37you have let's use good mechanics let's
  794. 26:39not try to lift and twist I'm going to
  795. 26:41call somebody Reaching Across the
  796. 26:43counter to grab a gallon of milk throw
  797. 26:44them back up they're calling 911 so they
  798. 26:46can't get off the floor just reach a
  799. 26:48bird down in the middle take the time to
  800. 26:50use some good technique right now if I
  801. 26:53was to lift something and um
  802. 26:56[Music]
  803. 26:58so if if I have this here and I lock my
  804. 27:01legs out and I just spend to pick up I
  805. 27:03put all the strain right here in my
  806. 27:04lower back right those muscles aren't
  807. 27:06meant for heavy lifting the ones that
  808. 27:08are are your big muscles in your legs
  809. 27:09how do you get them in play you have to
  810. 27:12bend your knees no because I was to bend
  811. 27:14my knees and sink my butt down whenever
  812. 27:16I'm lifting I lift as low as I can try
  813. 27:18to keep my head neck and back in line
  814. 27:20and then drive your legs straight up
  815. 27:21best way to do it you don't want to
  816. 27:23multitask and lift and twist and go at
  817. 27:25the same time you know lift it turn and
  818. 27:28then go one of the reasons you carry
  819. 27:31things at the lowest point that you can
  820. 27:33reach them is because let's suppose in
  821. 27:35this empty box I had it down here but
  822. 27:37it's full and now I'm trying to walk and
  823. 27:39then you're kicking it stuff while
  824. 27:41you're trying to do it it makes that job
  825. 27:42a little more difficult you want to hold
  826. 27:44it to where you can free your legs up as
  827. 27:46you're walking now if you're going to
  828. 27:47put it down
  829. 27:48get a good white base
  830. 27:50sink your butt back down and put it down
  831. 27:52if it's really heavy let's get some help
  832. 27:54right don't be that tough personality
  833. 27:56and help out with that might not even
  834. 27:59that heavy it just might be awkward it's
  835. 28:01okay to get some help just make sure
  836. 28:02that whoever's helping you lift that you
  837. 28:05communicate you all live that same time
  838. 28:07somebody will take charge and you all
  839. 28:09listen and lift that same time because
  840. 28:10if you don't if you lift early you got
  841. 28:12all the weight
  842. 28:14and if you lived early somebody else not
  843. 28:15ready you might be pinching their
  844. 28:17fingers always try to communicate and um
  845. 28:19let's let's work real smart here if
  846. 28:21you're going to go a long distance let's
  847. 28:22get a cart get a dolly get something to
  848. 28:25make your job easier right
  849. 28:27um if you do happen to have a car let's
  850. 28:29make sure we push it keep your head your
  851. 28:31neck your back in line so everything you
  852. 28:32see in front of you
  853. 28:34um it's just a safer way to go if you're
  854. 28:36pulling that card everything's behind
  855. 28:37you you can't see if it's going to shift
  856. 28:39or fall plus your whole upper body is
  857. 28:40Twisted as you go it's just always safer
  858. 28:43to do in that regard all right I know
  859. 28:45I'm rocking it through all these things
  860. 28:47but we got to get all this info in right
  861. 28:48we're going to talk about chemicals
  862. 28:50chemical's been around a long time it's
  863. 28:52all kinds of stuff that we've had to
  864. 28:53deal with and actually with these
  865. 28:55chemical Engineers there's just more
  866. 28:56crazy stuff that comes up every day I'm
  867. 28:58gonna go back to the basics right check
  868. 29:01out this container this container here
  869. 29:03very recognizable there's a lot of
  870. 29:05people that make household leaves and
  871. 29:07they put in a container that looks just
  872. 29:08like this this is a great cleaner that
  873. 29:09keeps your whites White Tile is fresh
  874. 29:11you know in a hospital setting when I
  875. 29:13work back in the 80s this is what we use
  876. 29:16to clean up body fluids right at 10 10
  877. 29:19parts of this 90 parts of water mixed
  878. 29:22together we clean up dry blood on the
  879. 29:24floor this is a great cleaner very
  880. 29:26recognizable now look at this container
  881. 29:28this container is not so recognizable
  882. 29:31there's a lot of things that come in a
  883. 29:32container it looks just like this dish
  884. 29:34soap bubble bath
  885. 29:36even syrup right they want to put the
  886. 29:38wrong stuff on your pancakes right
  887. 29:40how are you going to know exactly what
  888. 29:42you have what you got to redeem you read
  889. 29:44this thing it tells you it has ammonia
  890. 29:45in it and ammonia is a great cleaner man
  891. 29:47if I had a bucket of hot water right
  892. 29:49here all I did was take one or two
  893. 29:51capsules and put it in there right yeah
  894. 29:53I mean a great cleaner anybody that
  895. 29:55comes by while I'm using this you're
  896. 29:56able to smell it it has a distinct uh
  897. 29:59smell to it and it can be an inhalation
  898. 30:02Hazard right if you're in an enclosed
  899. 30:04area there's not much ventilation you
  900. 30:05need ventilation you want to hover over
  901. 30:07this thing sniff it in all day get you
  902. 30:09sticker right anytime you take any
  903. 30:11cleaners out don't leave the camp off
  904. 30:13always put the cap back on so you don't
  905. 30:15have Vapors continue to escape in the
  906. 30:17area that you're working
  907. 30:18one other thing about reading labels
  908. 30:20make sure it has one
  909. 30:22minors are people any type of safety
  910. 30:24inspection they go into a business and
  911. 30:26they find smaller containers and there's
  912. 30:27nothing on it man this is where the
  913. 30:29fines come from because this is where
  914. 30:31the danger is if you don't know what's
  915. 30:33in it don't touch it because only that
  916. 30:36can happen right
  917. 30:37um the big thing you're trying to do is
  918. 30:39prevent yourself from mixing chemicals
  919. 30:40you mix bleach with ammonia you actually
  920. 30:42create a deadly gas that's called
  921. 30:44hydrazine gas 50 parts per million can
  922. 30:47be deadly right
  923. 30:49it's one of the most common things that
  924. 30:50we end up getting calls on and we have
  925. 30:52situations on it thank goodness they're
  926. 30:55in household concentrations right not
  927. 30:57industrial concentrations I had one of
  928. 30:59the uh myosa reps was auditing our class
  929. 31:02and he came up talk to me after he said
  930. 31:06a workplace accident and it was a high
  931. 31:10school kid and it was told about the
  932. 31:12floor right big talking said he went
  933. 31:14into this little tiny closet where they
  934. 31:16had a sink and hose and a bucket and
  935. 31:18these two players were sitting on the
  936. 31:19shelf
  937. 31:20well kid wasn't sure which one to use
  938. 31:22right so instead of shutting water off
  939. 31:24to go ask well we can't do that right
  940. 31:25boss is intimidating he decided he was
  941. 31:28going to grab both of these containers
  942. 31:30and put it in and by the time that
  943. 31:32buffer filled up with water this kid
  944. 31:34fell backwards and passed out thank
  945. 31:36goodness he ended up okay but he still
  946. 31:38put himself in a bad way right now
  947. 31:41household my daughter her turn to clean
  948. 31:44our bathroom right and uh so she gets
  949. 31:47out the tub and tile cleaner and it's
  950. 31:48got a bleach space to it right she
  951. 31:50sprays everything down into the tub the
  952. 31:52tiles the toilet the backsplash the sink
  953. 31:54everything right but it's all foaming up
  954. 31:56well instead of wiping it down my body
  955. 31:58gets this great idea she's going to
  956. 32:00clean the mirror at the same time so she
  957. 32:02gets the window cleaner out to spray
  958. 32:03down the mirror you know the bass
  959. 32:05cleaner most window cleaners is ammonia
  960. 32:07she spread is not on my mirror all that
  961. 32:09ammonia dribbles down starts mixing in
  962. 32:11with the Bleach right on my own
  963. 32:12countertop my daughter comes out of my
  964. 32:14bathroom hacking and coughing her eyes
  965. 32:15are burning dead but nostrils are on
  966. 32:17fire
  967. 32:18she exposed herself to the this mixture
  968. 32:20of chemicals right you really have to be
  969. 32:22careful one cleaner at a time make sure
  970. 32:24it's all cleaned up before you go to the
  971. 32:25next one
  972. 32:26um one other area that this stuff can
  973. 32:28give me so let's say I do use the bleach
  974. 32:30I wipe it all down I take that rag I
  975. 32:32fill in the garbage then I use the
  976. 32:33ammonia and I wipe my mirror now and I
  977. 32:35take that rag you throw it in the same
  978. 32:36garbage they come together you have that
  979. 32:38same poison coming right out of your
  980. 32:40trash so make sure you don't do that
  981. 32:41either okay now in the work environment
  982. 32:44they have what's called a safety data
  983. 32:46sheet right the safety data she gives
  984. 32:48you all the information and by law the
  985. 32:50companies have to make this accessible
  986. 32:52to their employees of what the hazards
  987. 32:54are in their work environment right
  988. 32:57must be pretty important if they made it
  989. 32:59a law and you have the right to know
  990. 33:00maybe it's not your job to ever touch
  991. 33:03these kind of claims but
  992. 33:05he said no
  993. 33:06what if they store that stuff right next
  994. 33:08to you you don't ever have to touch it
  995. 33:10but it's nasty enough that there's a
  996. 33:12leak you got yourself in some trouble
  997. 33:13don't you want to know how to handle
  998. 33:15that how to get out of there safely
  999. 33:16maybe help your co-workers get out of
1000. 33:18there safely you do have that right then
1001. 33:20let's make sure we exercise that right
1002. 33:22okay one other thing about chemicals on
1003. 33:25a lot of big packaging or Vehicles
1004. 33:26they'll have what we call a quick
1005. 33:28reference they have placards okay these
  1006. 33:30placards there's really nine different
  1007. 33:32hazard classes but then they're
1008. 33:34subdivided in other classes but anyway
1009. 33:36pretty basic you see something like this
  1010. 33:38we've probably all seen
1011. 33:40something very similar to this drive by
1012. 33:42a gas station where the filling those
  1013. 33:43underground tanks I like gasoline's
  1014. 33:45going right
  1015. 33:46um poisonous gases stuff that's
1016. 33:48difficult to breathe in right the one
1017. 33:50that is probably the most common one
1018. 33:53that I have had in my career is dealing
1019. 33:55with corrosives where people have gotten
1020. 33:57hurt okay what is a girl say well it's
1021. 34:00kind of these things here right these
1022. 34:03different chemicals that people use and
1023. 34:05this is the stuff that actually gets
1024. 34:07into our system it starts to break down
1025. 34:09our system it starts to affect us
1026. 34:10there's four different ways this stuff
1027. 34:12gets into your system one is by
1028. 34:14breathing it in inhalation right this is
  1029. 34:17probably the quickest way that you're
1030. 34:18going to get knocked down okay
1031. 34:21um the next one this is actually fairly
1032. 34:22common too is you're in an area and
1033. 34:24you're exposed to this and it just seeps
1034. 34:26Right Through Your Skin maybe it seeps
1035. 34:28around the mucous membranes your eyes
1036. 34:29and nose stuff like that these next two
1037. 34:31less common but they happen ingestion
  1038. 34:34ingestion is simply eating I don't think
1039. 34:36you're going to pour yourself a couple
1040. 34:37weeks here have it with a sandwich right
  1041. 34:40um but what if you're working it's break
  1042. 34:42time you're hungry got a bag of chips
1043. 34:44maybe put that thing up just start
1044. 34:45rolling down if you haven't washed your
  1045. 34:47hands you're putting those chemicals in
  1046. 34:48your mouth it's always a good idea to
1047. 34:50wash your hands before you eat anything
1048. 34:52and then our last one is by injection
1049. 34:56I'm not talking about drawing something
1050. 34:57up and put it in there we're talking
1051. 34:59sharp contaminated objects that puncture
1052. 35:01your skin and create an entry point for
1053. 35:03uh for these chemicals to get into your
  1054. 35:05system okay maybe it's a nail on the
1055. 35:07floor or something sticking off a work
1056. 35:08match maybe uh something sharp on a wall
1057. 35:10right and again here's those four ways
1058. 35:13now once that happens you're exposed and
1059. 35:16there's two types of exposure one is
1060. 35:18called an acute exposure acute means
  1061. 35:20fast that doesn't mean proteins right
1062. 35:22now that kid in a fast food store you
1063. 35:24passed out pretty quick right that
  1064. 35:25happened very quickly
1065. 35:27the other is a chronic exposure that
1066. 35:29means small amounts of chemicals
1067. 35:31repeatedly over long periods of time we
1068. 35:33have cigarettes up there for a reason
  1069. 35:34every study they've ever done on
1070. 35:36cigarettes they found those hazardous
1071. 35:38chemicals to humans right rat poison
1072. 35:40carbon monoxide crazy stuff right they
  1073. 35:43found in cigarettes um
1074. 35:45if you were to do a search online on the
1075. 35:48the hazards and chemicals in cigarettes
1076. 35:50there's about four thousand that they
1077. 35:52have found right and um yeah they're in
1078. 35:55really tiny quantities but this repeated
1079. 35:56use this is the leading cause of heart
1080. 35:58and lung disease high blood pressure
  1081. 36:00right stroke
1082. 36:02um so you want to make sure that if
1083. 36:05you're in the workplace follow the rules
  1084. 36:07unfortunately you're going to have
1085. 36:08somebody they're going to train you how
1086. 36:09to do a job you may have to deal with
  1087. 36:11some hazardous substances
1088. 36:12and you got that 10-year employees been
1089. 36:14there and they do everything really fast
1090. 36:16and they take a few shortcuts and
1091. 36:18they'll try to defend their actions to
1092. 36:20you and say ah you don't need that
1093. 36:21safety stuff you don't even put them
  1094. 36:23gloves on you don't need that mask I've
1095. 36:24never wear it look at me I'm fine don't
1096. 36:26listen to that person right
1097. 36:28I wonder how fine they're going to be in
1098. 36:30another 20 years right make sure you
1099. 36:31protect yourself as you go one other
1100. 36:33quick thing about being exposed or even
1101. 36:35being hurt on the job reported too many
1102. 36:38times something happens especially young
1103. 36:40people you got your job you're so happy
  1104. 36:42you got a job you're making your money
1105. 36:44and then you knock something over you
  1106. 36:46breathe something in or maybe you'll
1107. 36:47hurt yourself and you don't want to tell
  1108. 36:49anybody because you're afraid you're
1109. 36:50going to get in trouble right don't
1110. 36:52worry about that you make sure that it's
1111. 36:54well documented and you make sure you
1112. 36:55get medical treatment right too many
1113. 36:57people imagine if something like that
1114. 36:58happened you breathe something in you
1115. 37:00got sick or you went home you get real
  1116. 37:02sick your family doesn't know what's
1117. 37:04going on you start to become
1118. 37:06unresponsive they take you to the
  1119. 37:07hospital the doctor's trying to figure
1120. 37:08it out they call you workplace the
  1121. 37:10workplace says no we don't think
1122. 37:12anything happened here we don't have any
1123. 37:14record of it don't let that happen okay
1124. 37:16now you also got to listen to your body
  1125. 37:18if you're in a certain area and
  1126. 37:20something starts to happen
1127. 37:22um your body talks to you we actually
1128. 37:24call those symptoms symptoms are
1129. 37:26itchy watery eyes scratchy throat runny
1130. 37:29nose cough chest pain diarrhea right
1131. 37:31bring it in your ears maybe your joints
1132. 37:33start aching you get lightheaded listen
1133. 37:36to your body if you have any of those
1134. 37:37things again back out get medical
1135. 37:39attention get it documented make sure
  1136. 37:40you've lost it

1165. 44:12let's talk about protective equipment
1166. 44:15Society is actually doing way better
  1167. 44:16with this
  1168. 44:18um we're talking personal protective
1169. 44:20equipment you know the fastest way to
1170. 44:22get knocked down is uh you know
  1171. 44:24breathing something in we're all aware
1172. 44:25of these right but they have different
1173. 44:27levels of these dust masking that some
  1174. 44:29are called n95s and they actually
1175. 44:31protect you from the pointer dust
1176. 44:33particles in the air because you don't
1177. 44:35want anything to get into your lungs
1178. 44:37right we also have we also have
1179. 44:41you know different kinds of respirators
1180. 44:43we got this half and a full shield
1181. 44:45respirator you know this is usually a
  1182. 44:47time I'll ask a student hey let's
1183. 44:48suppose I'm your boss I want you to go
1184. 44:50clean my stove right storm is a mess we
1185. 44:53have this fancy new cleaner it's highly
1186. 44:54concentrated gotta mix it with water to
1187. 44:57use it but you got to wear this mask
1188. 44:59because if you breathe it in it could
1189. 45:01kill you right so just make sure you put
1190. 45:02this on the only thing that happened to
  1191. 45:04you so let's suppose you're that
  1192. 45:06employee you're in there you're working
  1193. 45:07hard
1194. 45:09you've got the cleaner going and then
1195. 45:12all of a sudden and you even are wearing
1196. 45:13this mask and then the boss comes in and
1197. 45:15they tell you oh listen I'm really sorry
1198. 45:17I forgot to put one of these in your
  1199. 45:19mask right my bad I'm sorry
1200. 45:22who's ultimately responsible for your
  1201. 45:24safety equipment
1202. 45:26you are many people think it's the boss
  1203. 45:29the boss absolutely has a responsibility
1204. 45:31to keep their employees safe ultimately
1205. 45:33you're the one in the mess so it's your
  1206. 45:35responsibility as a firefighter my
1207. 45:37number one responsibility to make sure
1208. 45:39all my safety gear was going to keep me
  1209. 45:40safe in a nasty situation that's the
1210. 45:43same goes with you never seen one of
1211. 45:45these this one you start asking how does
1212. 45:47it work do I have to be certified do I
1213. 45:48have to be fit tested to wear this you
1214. 45:50know these cans go in a certain way if
1215. 45:52you put it in backwards it might not
1216. 45:53work you have to have the right cam for
  1217. 45:55whatever chemical you're protecting
1218. 45:56yourself from make this your
  1219. 45:58responsibility you're the one in the
  1220. 46:00mess right
1221. 46:01and the fire service we actually wear
  1222. 46:03one it's a full face it's similar to
1223. 46:05this it's not like this and it's um we
1224. 46:08do have to be fit tested a fit test is
1225. 46:10simple we hook this up snug it up we're
1226. 46:12gonna jump through an air tank or hooked
  1227. 46:14up to a computer we'll do jumping jack
  1228. 46:15sit-ups push-ups what we're trying to do
1229. 46:17is see if we create a leak if it doesn't
1230. 46:19leak I got the right size if it leaves I
1231. 46:21kind of adjust this one or get a
1232. 46:23different size and you have to do it
1233. 46:24until you pass that test that system is
  1234. 46:27called a self-contained breathing
  1235. 46:28apparatus right now
1236. 46:30it's very similar to people who go deep
  1237. 46:33sea diamond right
1238. 46:34um their system is called a scuba system
1239. 46:37so if I were to put the word underwater
  1240. 46:39in the middle self-contained underwater
  1241. 46:41breathing apparatus it's an acronym for
1242. 46:43scuba if you see the level B suit you
1243. 46:46got the uh the guy with the yellow tank
  1244. 46:48that's a high pressure line going to a
1245. 46:50regulated mask regulated just means it
1246. 46:52takes a high pressure and it knocks it
  1247. 46:54way down so it's very usable when you're
1248. 46:56breathing all of that is on the inside
  1249. 46:58of this level a the level eight that's
1250. 47:00what my buddies wore to go in and drag
1251. 47:02Chris's body out of that water tank
  1252. 47:03right
1253. 47:04these guys are experts expert amount of
1254. 47:07uh practice and time that they put in so
1255. 47:10that they can keep themselves safe
1256. 47:11wearing this thing you gotta picture
1257. 47:12this they don't practice this you need
1258. 47:15to be really efficient because that tape
1259. 47:17that yellow tank will give you 20 to 22
  1260. 47:19minutes of hard work
1261. 47:21if it takes you five minutes to put that
  1262. 47:23on you've almost been burned up 25 of
1263. 47:25your air they go in the tank they do
1264. 47:27what they have to do recover Chris's
1265. 47:28body they step out of this nasty tank
1266. 47:30they can't just start on zipping to
1267. 47:32breathe good air they have to go through
1268. 47:34a decontamination they have to make sure
1269. 47:35they do all of this before the heirlooms
1270. 47:37out right that's why they practice so
  1271. 47:39much all right now
  1272. 47:40so you're the employee and I got sitting
  1273. 47:43there working with a liquid-based
1274. 47:44cleaner and I give you these type of
1275. 47:45gloves to use right these are 100 cotton
1276. 47:48is that the wrong stuff of course it is
1277. 47:50right this isn't going to protect you
1278. 47:52it's not going to repel any liquids the
  1279. 47:53way it's going to absorb just like a
1280. 47:55t-shirt right so instead of it
  1281. 47:57protecting you now you're soaking in
  1282. 47:59this stuff
1283. 48:00and that has to be a very painful thing
1284. 48:02now what about eye protection right
1285. 48:04you're supposed to work in an area where
  1286. 48:05you're wearing safety glass and there's
  1287. 48:07all kinds I mean I think I remember yeah
1288. 48:10quite some time ago I had to wear
1289. 48:11something like this in my wood shop it
1290. 48:13doesn't matter whatever you can use to
1291. 48:15protect your eyes let's do that because
  1292. 48:17your eyes don't regenerate if I have to
1293. 48:19cut my arm and stands and bleeds or
1294. 48:21whatever in a couple weeks later you
1295. 48:23came until I was cut you damage outer
1296. 48:25layer of your eye called draconia it's
1297. 48:27permanent right matter of fact we took
1298. 48:29that information that that permanent
1299. 48:31damage happens use some amazing
  1300. 48:33technology and we can reshape someone's
1301. 48:35eyes for them to see better but you
1302. 48:38don't want it to happen on accident
1303. 48:39right because then you're going to deal
1304. 48:40with that forever this guy here this guy
1305. 48:42walked by a high pressure line that line
1306. 48:44ruptured and um that redness and all
1307. 48:46that irritation all around his eye it's
1308. 48:48going to go away in a couple days the
1309. 48:50white part that little cloudy white part
1310. 48:52right about seven o'clock on that on
1311. 48:53that eyeball is uh permanent if that was
1312. 48:56in the middle of the black part they
1313. 48:57would have to deal with that for his
1314. 48:58entire life right probably end up with a
1315. 49:01corneal transplant to see clearly again
1316. 49:03all right what about head protection
1317. 49:05you're working somewhere and they tell
1318. 49:07you how to wear a hard hat wear a hard
1319. 49:08hat most of them really aren't designer
1320. 49:10mine is kind of embarrassing sometimes
  1321. 49:13to wear out
  1322. 49:14but
  1323. 49:15maybe someone's working overhead
1324. 49:16low-lying areas maybe just people that
1325. 49:18walk around carrying a whole bunch of
1326. 49:20stuff you don't want to get hit maybe
1327. 49:21it's just to keep your hair up in your
1328. 49:23hands so it doesn't get caught in any
1329. 49:24moving parts right whatever it is if
1330. 49:26you're supposed to wear this stuff let's
1331. 49:28make sure we wear it this last picture
1332. 49:30of mine it's probably my worst one and
1333. 49:33uh if you want to look away now would be
  1334. 49:35a good time
  1335. 49:38so when you're looking at that
1336. 49:41I'm going to talk about this picture
1337. 49:42again in a little bit but as you look at
  1338. 49:44that the um that's not the brain that's
1339. 49:47actually the skull on the very top right
  1340. 49:49but we'll talk about that in a little
1341. 49:51bit I'm going to move on and we're going
1342. 49:53to talk about states of matter there are
  1343. 49:56three states of matter
  1344. 49:58basically and um
1345. 50:01you know the the one that's the most
1346. 50:03difficult for us to deal with between a
  1347. 50:06gas a liquid and a solid is a gas right
1348. 50:09and the reason is because there's so
1349. 50:11many gases that are out there that we
1350. 50:13actually can't detect matter of fact one
1351. 50:16of them they gave a nickname they
1352. 50:19actually followed the silent killer
  1353. 50:21right
1354. 50:25it's carbon monoxide right carbon
  1355. 50:28monoxide is a silent killer because
1356. 50:30there is no way that your human body can
1357. 50:33detect the presence of carbon monoxide
1358. 50:36that's a poison of unburned gases that
1359. 50:38get into your system and test to your
1360. 50:40red blood cells right at a rate of 201
1361. 50:43over oxygen so it blocks out the ability
1362. 50:45of the option you basically suffocate on
1363. 50:47cellular enough okay now other gases
1364. 50:50colorless odorless tasteless gases right
1365. 50:54um there's helium is one of those
1366. 50:55colorless odorless stasis right dealing
  1367. 50:58and putting a birthday balloon a balloon
  1368. 50:59builds up
1369. 51:00it's lighter than air do you know
  1370. 51:02natural gas that's those same four
  1371. 51:04qualities natural gases colorless
  1372. 51:06odorless tasteless it's also lighter
  1373. 51:09than air if I don't know
1374. 51:10I know you all said anything oh wait a
1375. 51:12minute natural gas I smell it that stuff
1376. 51:14stinks you know what you actually smell
1377. 51:16it's called our captain it's an additive
1378. 51:18they put in the pipeline so that you
  1379. 51:20know there's a leak but they didn't put
1380. 51:23that in there and you had a leak in your
1381. 51:24home you'd never know until it exploded
1382. 51:26right and that's why they put that in
1383. 51:28there now there are other gases that are
  1384. 51:31heavier than air they'll stay in a
1385. 51:32low-lying area for great lengths of time
1386. 51:34propane I mean people Heat their homes
1387. 51:36of propane gas grills RVs
  1388. 51:39um butane that's what I put in here
1389. 51:41they'll stay in there for great lengths
  1390. 51:42of time now
1391. 51:44that new thing is in here you know fire
1392. 51:47needs three things about fire needs heat
1393. 51:49Fuel and oxygen if you take any one of
1394. 51:51those away that fire is going out so and
  1395. 51:53here's the fuel here's the oxygen when I
1396. 51:55light this it's going to burn where all
1397. 51:57three come together okay check this out
1398. 51:59now if that uh Fuel and oxygen were all
1399. 52:02mixed in together and I let it pistol
1400. 52:05and be done in a hurry watch how long
  1401. 52:07this takes in comparison
1402. 52:11and it takes its time because that
1403. 52:13oxygen is working its way in to work
1404. 52:16with the fuel and um and the heat so
1405. 52:18that it can maintain the kids learning
1406. 52:20right it's kind of crazy how long
1407. 52:22that'll stay in there if that was out in
1408. 52:24the air it would be one ball of fire in
1409. 52:26about half a second and it would have
  1410. 52:27been done now
1411. 52:30that heat Fuel and oxygen thing actually
  1412. 52:32has a name
1413. 52:34what happened to the fire extinguish
  1414. 52:36Ed
  1415. 52:38we put it back
1416. 52:41all right that heat Fuel and oxygen
  1417. 52:43thing is called a fire triangle
1418. 52:46um fire doubles itself quickly uh this
  1419. 52:49will say every 19 seconds I've actually
1420. 52:51seen it go way faster than that right
1421. 52:53you get a radical Christmas tree man
1422. 52:55those things go up in a hurry the thing
1423. 52:57is you want to have the edge how do you
1424. 52:59get the advantage smoke alarms smoke
1425. 53:01detectors they work they save lives
1426. 53:03right and carbon monoxide detectors we
1427. 53:05should all have those in our homes right
  1428. 53:07now let's say that you're in a fire and
1429. 53:10you're in a fire setting and um yeah the
  1430. 53:14fire extinguisher available I'm about to
1431. 53:15get one right now and uh
1432. 53:18one important question you got to ask
1433. 53:20yourself is that if you
  1434. 53:23are in a fire
1435. 53:25the question is simple is the player
1436. 53:27blocking my exit man if the player is
1437. 53:29black and your only way out let's use
1438. 53:32this to make a path to get you out
1439. 53:33imagine if you try to use up this thing
1440. 53:36this one here is a little smaller and
1441. 53:37want to add this one this will last you
1442. 53:3810 to 12 seconds you don't have to fire
1443. 53:40out in that short of time you're in some
1444. 53:42serious trouble right now how do they
1445. 53:44work well they got a pin in them you
1446. 53:46pull this pin then you take the nozzle
1447. 53:49you aim the nozzle you squeeze these two
1448. 53:52handles together and then you sweep so
1449. 53:54if you can remember past pull aim
1450. 53:57squeeze and sweep that's how you operate
1451. 53:59this couple tips so when you aim this do
1452. 54:02not just aim it at all those pretty
1453. 54:03colors of the fire right this is under
  1454. 54:05pressure I squeeze the handle the
1455. 54:06pressure shoots back at me you need to
1456. 54:08aim it at the base of the fire when you
  1457. 54:10squeeze it and that comes out it's a
1458. 54:11continual gradual sweep and then you
1459. 54:14stay low remember take your back and
1460. 54:15holds a full blast to do this you get
1461. 54:17all those water droplets in the air if
1462. 54:19you take this thing completely fast
1463. 54:20you're going to create those air pockets
1464. 54:22and that fire can actually nip at you
1465. 54:24okay one quick thing too is some of
1466. 54:26these are huge some are heavy it's okay
1467. 54:29put it on the ground and drag it
  1468. 54:31whatever you need to get it's a safety
1469. 54:33okay all right we talked about gases so
  1470. 54:37let's talk about solids
1471. 54:39solid Zone you know have
1472. 54:42a certain danger to them
1473. 54:45in the form of dust right say we're
  1474. 54:47working somewhere and you're kicking up
1475. 54:48a lot of dust you sweeping you're saying
1476. 54:50the drywall sanding wood and you can't
1477. 54:52see beyond five feet that actually
1478. 54:54becomes very very dangerous because it
  1479. 54:55can explode right
  1480. 54:57um I'm actually going to add a little
  1481. 54:59dust to this environment there's a
1482. 55:00candle in here and pretty good explosion
1483. 55:02this morning let's see if we can do that
1484. 55:05same thing and see how dangerous this
1485. 55:07dust can be all right check it out oh
  1486. 55:10yeah
  1487. 55:11[Music]
1488. 55:15right this morning that thing popped way
1489. 55:18up it was actually much better
  1490. 55:20um explosion now
1491. 55:21the last that I have is uh we talk about
1492. 55:24liquids just uh the one thing to
1493. 55:26understand is there are so many liquids
1494. 55:28that look very similar being a clear
1495. 55:30liquid liquids have oil water boils at
1496. 55:33212 degrees you know Water by itself at
1497. 55:36room temperature harms Us in no way
1498. 55:38unless we put it in our lungs right
1499. 55:40but if you boil it and it turns into a
1500. 55:42gas state it can peel your skin right so
1501. 55:44we have to understand that even in a
1502. 55:47liquid form if it turns into a gas form
1503. 55:49that different problems can actually
1504. 55:51happen to us all right I'm going to move
1505. 55:53on and talk about Machinery my last bad
  1506. 55:55picture here
1507. 55:56right this guy uh had a loose article of
  1508. 56:00clothing
1509. 56:02and um it caught on his sleeve and it
1510. 56:06pulled his arm into a wheel right I mean
1511. 56:08these are the things that we're trying
1512. 56:09to prevent for for us now hold on there
  1513. 56:13you go perfect
1514. 56:14and just looked right around him all
1515. 56:16right so we don't want to give a machine
1516. 56:18the opportunity to get us right so let's
1517. 56:21not have moose articles of clothing no
1518. 56:23bracelets no neckties right no loose uh
1519. 56:26uh face scarves uh your hair if you have
1520. 56:29long hair it should be back and up right
1521. 56:31now the picture I showed you with the
1522. 56:32skulls showing that person never got
1523. 56:34physically hit on the head with anything
  1524. 56:36that person's hair got caught in a
1525. 56:38machine and it tore their scalp off
1526. 56:40right it happened so fast
1527. 56:42so how do we prevent this from happening
1528. 56:43well we lock them out what does that
1529. 56:45mean in its simplest form my wife loves
1530. 56:47to bake right check it out those eight
1531. 56:49meters unwrap the cord plug it in
1532. 56:50eventually take the meters and put them
  1533. 56:52in there well the second one's always a
1534. 56:54little tricky once you're trying to get
1535. 56:55it in she accidentally hits that thing
1536. 56:57turns it on my fingers are in the moving
1537. 56:58parts right man that's not how it should
1538. 57:00be you should put those things in first
1539. 57:03and then plug it in so that you don't
1540. 57:05have the chance of it energizing while
1541. 57:06you're using it right come home from uh
1542. 57:09come home from work one day my kids
1543. 57:11laying on the on the lift kit for the
  1544. 57:13living room floor and he's got a
1545. 57:14screwdriver put my vacuum cleaner
1546. 57:15together all right so here I'm asking
1547. 57:17what happened he said he was vacuuming
1548. 57:19the belt on the inside for all and so we
1549. 57:22had a spare and we decided he was going
1550. 57:24to put it in real cool it took some
  1551. 57:25initiative right
  1552. 57:27so he's done doing it and I'm actually
1553. 57:29pretty proud that he's fixed it on his
1554. 57:31own but I just told him some you know
1555. 57:33you left the vacuum plugged in the
1556. 57:34entire time he was fixing it it only has
1557. 57:37a little time to switch on it then it
1558. 57:38got bumped and turned on his hands were
1559. 57:40at the moving parts that's how we got to
1560. 57:42lock it up if you have a big piece of
  1561. 57:44machine you're at work can't lift it
1562. 57:46bolted to the ground super heavy what
1563. 57:49you do is you go to its power source and
1564. 57:51most places will have a lockout takeout
1565. 57:54system that looks similar to this and
1566. 57:56they'll have cards and clamps and locks
  1567. 57:58and uh Golden's power source electricity
1568. 58:00level breaker you shut the breaker off
1569. 58:03um do you clamp it in the off position
1570. 58:04you lock it there right and then of
1571. 58:06course you let your supervisor know if
1572. 58:08you let them know what's wrong maybe
1573. 58:09it's missing safety guards just jamming
  1574. 58:10up brake wires whatever if it's a small
1575. 58:13piece of equipment get it out of service
1576. 58:15don't let somebody use faulty equipment
1577. 58:17okay now Lawn Equipment gas powered
1578. 58:21equipment if you're using any kind of
1579. 58:22gas powered equipment never use indoors
1580. 58:24I know the first thought is yeah like
1581. 58:26I'm going to run my lawnmower in the
1582. 58:27living room right and I'd be talking
1583. 58:29about that the most common and used gas
  1584. 58:31powered equipment is during a power
1585. 58:33outage someone takes that generator and
1586. 58:35they're put in the basement keep all
1587. 58:36that stuff from going bad in the freezer
  1588. 58:38or refrigerator right
1589. 58:40that thing running puts out carbon
  1590. 58:41monoxide I've already talked about how
1591. 58:43dangerous that is they had never run
  1592. 58:44those things indoors if they've been
1593. 58:45running for any length of time they'll
  1594. 58:47have a super hot surface they'll kill
1595. 58:48your skin you come in contact with it
  1596. 58:51um
1597. 58:52if it runs out of gas right you got the
1598. 58:54gas can the time to fill it is certainly
1599. 58:57not right after ran out of gas it's
1600. 58:59still super hot and if you have a static
1601. 59:01charge do you have a static charger walk
1602. 59:03by somebody and you guys touch arms you
1603. 59:04shock each other that is enough to
1604. 59:07create a fire and explosion right there
1605. 59:08if you have the right mixture right
  1606. 59:11um
  1607. 59:11lawnmowers my lawnmower uh when I
  1608. 59:14started it's got a safety feature never
1609. 59:16circumvent that say gp3 you know you got
1610. 59:18to pull the two handles together you
1611. 59:19pull that rib cord whatever stuff
1612. 59:21happens when you pull the record is it
1613. 59:22turns the engine and when it turns the
1614. 59:24engine it creates a spark through the
1615. 59:26spark plug back in the engine and that
1616. 59:28spark explodes the gasoline on the
1617. 59:30inside well that explodes and turns the
1618. 59:31engine some more so now you have a cycle
1619. 59:33going so if you're going to work on it
1620. 59:35you have to take the wire off of the
1621. 59:37spark plug so that cycle is disrupted
1622. 59:40imagine you have that lawnmower on the
  1623. 59:42side somebody's scraping off all that
1624. 59:43dry Columbia grass under there but when
  1625. 59:45they're doing it they're turning the
  1626. 59:46blade the Blade's connected to the
1627. 59:48engine and you do it and then my lawn
1628. 59:50mower will start up that one spark is
1629. 59:52all it needs you get one spark fires it
1630. 59:54up your hands are in the moving parts of
  1631. 59:55the lawnmower
1632. 59:57back to that safety feature when I was a
1633. 1:00:00kid I had one handle I could cut the
1634. 1:00:01grass and let go pick up uh papers pull
1635. 1:00:04weeds do whatever and stay and run it I
1636. 1:00:06also worked in an ER where people were
1637. 1:00:07missing fingers and toes because of it
1638. 1:00:09so now they put that safety feature in
1639. 1:00:12don't circumvent that no bungee cords
1640. 1:00:14nothing like that right because when you
1641. 1:00:16let go those two handles separate it
1642. 1:00:17kills the engine we have one of our
1643. 1:00:19workers right in our tunnel
1644. 1:00:21um operating a trash truck trash truck
1645. 1:00:23through all garbage in the middle and
1646. 1:00:26when that area got fully had to hit two
1647. 1:00:27buttons one flat on the top one against
1648. 1:00:29the side of the garbage truck and it
1649. 1:00:32would initiate this compacting where
1650. 1:00:34this metal plate would come down and
1651. 1:00:35compact it and that'll pay to go back up
1652. 1:00:37this guy took a sledgehammer put it on
1653. 1:00:39this button so he could hit just one and
1654. 1:00:40dump your ass with the other well he hit
1655. 1:00:42the button at the same time he threw a
1656. 1:00:44bag that plate came down the bag went in
1657. 1:00:45behind it this dude jumped up on that
1658. 1:00:47trunk and tried to grab that bag to pull
1659. 1:00:49it out he was too late that plate came
1660. 1:00:51up and smashed them right in there and
1661. 1:00:52it actually killed him he died right
1662. 1:00:54there on our city street because he
1663. 1:00:55circumvented the one thing that was
1664. 1:00:58going to protect him okay all right
1665. 1:01:00let's get into labor laws okay
1666. 1:01:02um this is real important it's kind of
1667. 1:01:04the nuts and bolts of everything here I
1668. 1:01:06want you to know a lot of things about
1669. 1:01:08this number one is if you have issues at
  1670. 1:01:10work it's okay to call my OSHA there's
1671. 1:01:12all kinds of ways that you can get
  1672. 1:01:13information
  1673. 1:01:15um there's a there's a phone number
  1674. 1:01:16there's a website
1675. 1:01:17but the biggest thing is you got to know
1676. 1:01:19you have rights you know you have the
  1677. 1:01:20right to a safe and a helpful workplace
1678. 1:01:22right you have to write that if there's
1679. 1:01:23issues or safety problems that you can
1680. 1:01:25notify meiosa even your supervisors no
  1681. 1:01:28backlash to you because you're concerned
1682. 1:01:30about safety right you have the right to
1683. 1:01:32work without any kind of racial issues
1684. 1:01:34any sexual harassment type stuff you
1685. 1:01:36have to write that if your job has
1686. 1:01:38hazards to and they have to train you in
1687. 1:01:39those hazards and if they require you to
1688. 1:01:41wear protective equipment in a lot of
1689. 1:01:43cases they have to provide it and in
1690. 1:01:45some you have to provide your own but
1691. 1:01:46they have to make sure you're using that
1692. 1:01:48proper stuff before you get started if
1693. 1:01:50you get hurt at work they pay your
  1694. 1:01:51medical bills right they're also
  1695. 1:01:53entitled to a minimum wage and there's
1696. 1:01:55some criteria that go along with that
1697. 1:01:57along with right self responsibilities
1698. 1:01:59this is the part we kind of lack
  1699. 1:02:01sometimes
1700. 1:02:02I gotta ask there's a lot of you that
1701. 1:02:04are teenagers who probably have a job
  1702. 1:02:06right now let's say something crazy
  1703. 1:02:07happens at work maybe co-worker has a
1704. 1:02:09big old heart attack maybe they're down
1705. 1:02:10maybe somebody gets cut they get hurt
1706. 1:02:12they get hit with something and uh you
1707. 1:02:15need rescue you need police maybe
  1708. 1:02:16there's a player
1709. 1:02:18so you grab your cell phone because
1710. 1:02:19that's the first thing that you have do
1711. 1:02:21you know the exact address that you can
1712. 1:02:23give that fire department or police
1713. 1:02:25officer to come to your building you
1714. 1:02:27know a lot of young people a lot of
1715. 1:02:28people in general could not give the
1716. 1:02:29exact address of their place in the
  1717. 1:02:31climate you dial 9-1-1 from a landline
1718. 1:02:33it knows because it shows up right on
1719. 1:02:34the screen right do you know if your
1720. 1:02:37company has a first aid off kit do you
1721. 1:02:39know where to get that do you know if
  1722. 1:02:41you have a if you're getting robbed you
1723. 1:02:42have a sign on our bike little things
  1724. 1:02:44like that I think what's your
  1725. 1:02:45responsibility if you're supposed to use
  1726. 1:02:47safety equipment personal protective
1727. 1:02:48equipment let's make sure that you wear
  1728. 1:02:50those things right
1729. 1:02:51um keep your safety guards in place keep
1730. 1:02:53your area neat and clean okay
1731. 1:02:56um look out for things that might harm
1732. 1:02:57you or your co-workers and really the
1733. 1:03:00biggest thing is if there is something
1734. 1:03:01that you don't feel right some kind of
1735. 1:03:03safety or helping make sure you report
1736. 1:03:06it right don't just let it go by banks
  1737. 1:03:09that um you really can't do if you're
  1738. 1:03:12not yet 18. you can't drive a car floor
1739. 1:03:14glitch High lowest car to your regular
1740. 1:03:15job not supposed to operate power tools
1741. 1:03:17saws drills pressure slicers compactors
1742. 1:03:21if you're not supposed to work in
  1743. 1:03:23racking demolition excavation Roofing
1744. 1:03:25logging Sawmill stuff like that but
1745. 1:03:29there are places where you can do that
1746. 1:03:30some of those exceptions of training
1747. 1:03:32facilities like high schools right they
1748. 1:03:33have a wood shop they have auto shop the
1749. 1:03:35highly trained Professionals in those
1750. 1:03:37areas that are training people to do
1751. 1:03:38those things in the safest way and I
  1752. 1:03:40think it's awesome
1753. 1:03:41um the three leading causes that young
1754. 1:03:43people actually are dying at work we
  1755. 1:03:44told you we're at 60 70 a year and the
1756. 1:03:47three leading causes of driving a car
1757. 1:03:49operating machine are falling off of
1758. 1:03:50something all three are prohibited if
  1759. 1:03:52you're not yet 18 you're not supposed to
1760. 1:03:54be doing any of those things
  1761. 1:03:56in the work environment
  1762. 1:03:58um if you're not 18 you got to have a
1763. 1:04:00permit in state of Michigan
1764. 1:04:01um to get usually get them through your
  1765. 1:04:03school districts now there's three
1766. 1:04:04exceptions one is if your parents own a
1767. 1:04:06business don't need one to work for your
1768. 1:04:08parents you don't need one to work on a
  1769. 1:04:10farm which is mind-boggling because
1770. 1:04:11there's so many farming accidents and
1771. 1:04:13the other is uh a co-op setting so if
1772. 1:04:15your school sets you up with a job
1773. 1:04:16there's different paperwork and things
1774. 1:04:18they do there the state knows there
1775. 1:04:19should be a good balance between work
1776. 1:04:21and study in place so they put some
1777. 1:04:23restrictions on how much you work if
  1778. 1:04:25you're 14 or 15 you get you can't work
  1779. 1:04:28before 7 A.M after nine PM really
1780. 1:04:30doesn't leave you a lot of time
1781. 1:04:31especially on school days to work now 16
  1782. 1:04:3317 6 a.m to 10 30 that's before school
  1783. 1:04:37day 11 30 on weekends or middle school
1784. 1:04:39the next day the big thing is they don't
1785. 1:04:41want you to work more than five straight
  1786. 1:04:42hours without a 30 minute break the
1787. 1:04:44numbers don't lie people get hurt at the
1788. 1:04:46end of their shift right maybe you get a
1789. 1:04:48little mental fatigue they want you to
1790. 1:04:50take that kind of recover finish off
1791. 1:04:52that day as safe as you can how do you
1792. 1:04:55uh refuse to do unsafe work you know if
1793. 1:04:58you were my employee and I gave you a
1794. 1:04:59nasty job like to clean your store room
1795. 1:05:01with that nasty cleaner and you told me
1796. 1:05:02no I'm not doing it and you might get
1797. 1:05:04fired how can you not lose your job
1798. 1:05:06still not put yourself in danger it's
  1799. 1:05:07called a conditional refusal
  1800. 1:05:10look I don't feel comfortable I think
1801. 1:05:12I'm putting myself in danger I've never
1802. 1:05:14seen that before how it works right
1803. 1:05:16there is a proper way to refuse to do
  1804. 1:05:18something until you're educated on what
  1805. 1:05:20you're working with and you're trained
1806. 1:05:21how to keep yourself safe mistake nodes
1807. 1:05:23are four areas where young people get
1808. 1:05:25their first job they want us to talk
1809. 1:05:27real quick about those janitorial
1810. 1:05:29cleanup I already talked about all these
1811. 1:05:31chemicals right make sure we use them
  1812. 1:05:32safe
1813. 1:05:33uh even taking off the trash whatever
1814. 1:05:35you do don't Jam your foot or your hand
1815. 1:05:37and make more space and when you're
1816. 1:05:38taking that bag out of the garbage only
1817. 1:05:40touch what you see right
1818. 1:05:42um be careful of pushing down on it to
1819. 1:05:44make space to tie it up because that air
1820. 1:05:46that's in there is going to shoot right
1821. 1:05:47back at you right be careful for Sharp
  1822. 1:05:49eyes especially in a hospital setting

1834. 1:06:12to be hot let's assume that it is what
  1835. 1:06:15if you're using a sharp object use it
  1836. 1:06:17the way it's intended safely when you're
1837. 1:06:18not using it put the thing down right
1838. 1:06:20too many people you get that Amazon box
1839. 1:06:22you cut it open you got the box cutter
1840. 1:06:24you open it up you still got that box
1841. 1:06:25cutter in your hand while you're getting
1842. 1:06:26stuff out right only bad can happen
  1843. 1:06:29office of clerical what's the hazard
1844. 1:06:31there well sometimes stress and stress
1845. 1:06:33been proven to be a health risk maybe
1846. 1:06:35you have a boss difficult to work with
  1847. 1:06:37maybe charge a payroll you don't want to
  1848. 1:06:38mess up somebody's paycheck right how
1849. 1:06:40about your workstation you cycle now
1850. 1:06:42your risk is sore if that happens talk
1851. 1:06:44to somebody maybe you sit in a chair all
1852. 1:06:46the time you got low back pain make sure
1853. 1:06:47you communicate this if you have to lift
1854. 1:06:49use the big muscles in your legs
1855. 1:06:51especially that and in retail
1856. 1:06:53retail man the biggest thing you have
1857. 1:06:56with your rotating stock I know you got
1858. 1:06:57to lift and you're going to use your
1859. 1:06:58your uh good mechanics right is uh I
  1860. 1:07:02don't crying man
1861. 1:07:04um with people today it just seems like
1862. 1:07:05the Smashing grabs that they're just so
1863. 1:07:07bold these criminal criminals anymore
1864. 1:07:09you got to keep yourself safe in the
  1865. 1:07:10workplace there was a kid 16 year old
1866. 1:07:13Justin mellow working in New Baltimore
  1867. 1:07:15Michigan and I had a pizza shop the
1868. 1:07:17adult took off to deliver a pizza
1869. 1:07:18because the kid couldn't drive his car
1870. 1:07:20for his job right somebody comes in the
1871. 1:07:2216 year old by himself they kill the kid
  1872. 1:07:24they run the store it's more than 15
1873. 1:07:25years ago I still don't know what we did
1874. 1:07:27their kids have never been left alone if
1875. 1:07:29any of your work Reach Out
1876. 1:07:31even if it's five minutes because the
1877. 1:07:32boss is running out to the bank or the
1878. 1:07:34post office don't let them leave you
  1879. 1:07:36alone it's against the law there's a
1880. 1:07:37retail safety checklist we pulled a few
1881. 1:07:39things out of there one is going to work
1882. 1:07:41alone the other is your parking lot
1883. 1:07:43should be well lit even if it is walk in
1884. 1:07:45and out with people every chance you get
  1885. 1:07:47imagine if you're the same person
1886. 1:07:49four or five days a week at the exact
  1887. 1:07:51same time you're leaving work and you're
1888. 1:07:52by yourself if someone recognizes that
1889. 1:07:54pattern you actually become more
1890. 1:07:56vulnerable guest register should be in
1891. 1:07:58plain view of the people that you work
1892. 1:07:59with so they can see that exchange and
  1893. 1:08:01again if you're being robbed or
1894. 1:08:03something do you have a silent alarm
1895. 1:08:05button do you know how to get a hold of
1896. 1:08:07people if there's an issue how do you
1897. 1:08:08take care of the unhappy customer man if
  1898. 1:08:10somebody comes in they're irate they
  1899. 1:08:12bought something or something's not
  1900. 1:08:13right
1901. 1:08:14um whatever you do don't ignore them
  1902. 1:08:15they only get matter don't challenge
1903. 1:08:17them right you're gonna end up fighting
1904. 1:08:19with them don't let them vacuum in the
1905. 1:08:21corner so you don't have an escape make
1906. 1:08:23sure you've got a way to get out of
1907. 1:08:24there if it goes bad we call this the
1908. 1:08:25umbrella techniques they call them speak
  1909. 1:08:27soft
1910. 1:08:29um username if you know if they know
1911. 1:08:30yours is not a big deal ask them to sit
  1912. 1:08:32down if they don't sit you don't either
1913. 1:08:34right apologize for what's going on not
1914. 1:08:36that you think it's your fault but
1915. 1:08:38sometimes that can defuse the situation
1916. 1:08:40and thank somebody for being patient
  1917. 1:08:42maybe maybe they're not patient but
1918. 1:08:43sometimes thinking it gives them a good
  1919. 1:08:45idea right
1920. 1:08:46um but whatever you do make sure you
1921. 1:08:48don't handle it by yourself
1922. 1:08:49here's our last segment and um it's
1923. 1:08:52about harassment type issues mainly
1924. 1:08:54sexual harassment but others um under
  1925. 1:08:56sexual harassment there's two forms one
1926. 1:08:58is called a quid pro quo all that means
1927. 1:09:00is there's this offer for an exchange
  1928. 1:09:02right
1929. 1:09:03um and you can figure out what it is
1930. 1:09:05talking about sexual grass the other is
1931. 1:09:07a hostile environment that means by your
  1932. 1:09:09actions you're making it difficult for
1933. 1:09:11someone else to do the job they're paid
1934. 1:09:12to do and I have a handful of uh
1935. 1:09:15examples right the words you use honey
  1936. 1:09:17sweetheart
1937. 1:09:18um you know you can't walk into work and
1938. 1:09:20look at your co-working man you look
1939. 1:09:22awesome you know but things like that
1940. 1:09:24may be cool somebody may like to hear
1941. 1:09:26that but somebody may not how do you
1942. 1:09:28know the difference you don't so you
1943. 1:09:30don't do it it creates a bad environment
  1944. 1:09:31somebody could be real defensive they're
1945. 1:09:34there to work they don't want your
1946. 1:09:35advances right how about jokes you tell
1947. 1:09:37a sexual joke at work of course you're
1948. 1:09:38gonna have people feeling really
  1949. 1:09:40uncomfortable what if it's a different
1950. 1:09:41kind of joke a racial joke ethnic joke
  1951. 1:09:44religious joke God forbidden today's
  1952. 1:09:46game political joke right you're going
1953. 1:09:49to create a stereotype that you might
1954. 1:09:51not even believe in what the joke is you
1955. 1:09:53just think it's funny man you start
1956. 1:09:55doing that at work you can create some
1957. 1:09:56bad situations where you have some
  1958. 1:09:58animosity with your co-workers the
1959. 1:10:00biggest one is sexual favors
  1960. 1:10:02maybe you're going for a job promotion
1961. 1:10:04and there's some kind of an exchange
1962. 1:10:06like hey you know we'll see to it that
1963. 1:10:08you get this promotion if or you get in
1964. 1:10:10trouble and you got a boss who says hey
1965. 1:10:11look I'll sweep this under the rug if
1966. 1:10:13right you got to report that stuff
1967. 1:10:15that's that quid pro quo we want to make
1968. 1:10:18sure that um we don't put ourselves in
1969. 1:10:20that position it's been found that the
1970. 1:10:21people that do this they will never stop
1971. 1:10:23doing it so you got to make sure you
  1972. 1:10:24report it touching or making someone's
1973. 1:10:27personal space we all know about six
1974. 1:10:29feet nowadays right but don't we all
1975. 1:10:31have that friend of telling you a story
1976. 1:10:32they get right up in your grill right or
1977. 1:10:33they want to touch you while they're
1978. 1:10:34talking to you make sure that you give
1979. 1:10:36everybody their space keep your hands to
  1980. 1:10:38yourself okay
1981. 1:10:40um any kind of I've seen language
1982. 1:10:42explicit hand gestures stuff like that
1983. 1:10:44you really got to be careful because
1984. 1:10:46that can create a rough situation at
  1985. 1:10:49work I was even training that a simple
1986. 1:10:51eye roll at work could create some
1987. 1:10:53issues with co-workers right you want to
1988. 1:10:56treat people with the respect that you
1989. 1:10:57would want yourself okay again sexual
1990. 1:10:59favors is up there again last two I have
1991. 1:11:02excluding people you work with from
1992. 1:11:05conversations from things you have to
  1993. 1:11:06discuss maybe your co-worker things you
  1994. 1:11:08do
1995. 1:11:09um that could get you in trouble we had
1996. 1:11:11a fire department that they were all
1997. 1:11:13guys that hired a female and um none of
1998. 1:11:16those guys wanted that woman actually an
1999. 1:11:18artist we hired one a few years after
2000. 1:11:20they did she's awesome in fact right now
2001. 1:11:22she's a captain of the fire department
2002. 1:11:23I'm retired from they're going to be
2003. 1:11:25right to be there as they did but these
  2004. 1:11:27guys didn't want her in their man's
2005. 1:11:29world so they never talked to her they
2006. 1:11:31didn't tell her the important stuff like
2007. 1:11:32what they used on the fire truck what
2008. 1:11:34needs to be replaced where the last fire
2009. 1:11:36was what the training is about right
2010. 1:11:38these guys too we got fired they went
  2011. 1:11:40through a bunch of sensitive attorney
2012. 1:11:42and they got their jobs back but it was
2013. 1:11:45just an immaturity thing man treat
2014. 1:11:46people the way that you would like to be
2015. 1:11:47treated and the last thing that I have
2016. 1:11:49is uh man you could you can't put naked
2017. 1:11:52pictures up in the workplace right you
2018. 1:11:53can make some people feel really
  2019. 1:11:54uncomfortable and create a bad situation
2020. 1:11:57um thanks for having me here hope you
2021. 1:11:58guys can all stay safe in your work
