1. 0:00Let's talk about the questions I ask
2. 0:02patients in terms of what is the
3. 0:04elective surgery to fix or cure your
4. 0:07spinal stenosis. One of the first
5. 0:08questions I ask is how is this symptom
6. 0:12impacting [music] your life? Some
7. 0:14patients come in and tell me they have
8. 0:15back pain and leg pain, but they're able
9. 0:17to go on cruises with their families,
10. 0:19they're able to work a full functioning
11. 0:21job,
12. 0:22able to swim with kids, grandkids, and
13. 0:25they're doing pretty well. That's a
14. 0:27pretty important thing for me to hear
15. 0:29because many times I say, "Hey, yes, on
16. 0:32MRI, I know your primary care sent you
17. 0:34to see me, and yes, your MRI has a
18. 0:36finding of a certain degree of spinal
19. 0:38stenosis, means pinching of the nerves.
20. 0:40Yes, it hurts you every now and then,
21. 0:42but it sounds like you're doing pretty
22. 0:43darn good, and so maybe it's not
23. 0:46necessarily something that needs surgery
24. 0:47now or even in the immediate future." On
25. 0:50the flip side, I have patients coming in
26. 0:51legitimately,
27. 0:52understandably, crying that they don't
28. 0:55have a life. They've done all the
29. 0:56injections, they've taken medications,
30. 0:58they can't enjoy the normal activities
31. 1:00of daily living, and that, of course,
32. 1:03changes my mentality in terms of if we
33. 1:06do surgery and when we do surgery.
