- 0:05hello
- 0:05and welcome to the first official
- 0:09oh my god hello and welcome to the
- 0:13first official episode of
- 0:17uplifting murders and whole surprises
- 0:21i'm natalie i'm sarah and we're really
- 0:24annoying sisters
- 0:25and we know crimes are not uplifting or
- 0:27wholesome
- 0:28yeah um it's it's an inside joke you'll
- 0:31be a part of it
- 0:32you'll see it's just it's a stupid joke
- 0:34it's funny because we think we're funny
- 0:36yeah we think we're funny you think
- 0:37we're so funny we'll see if you agree
- 0:39probably not
- 0:41um so i have no skill sets but sarah is
- 0:43actually getting a master's degree
- 0:45that is relevant to the true private
- 0:47space in some ways
- 0:48in some ways yeah because um that's
- 0:51what what are they called the
- 0:53criminologists yeah they are
- 0:55behavior analysts so i am getting my
- 0:58masters
- 0:59of science in applied behavior analysis
- 1:04and it's the study of behavior um
- 1:08you know within the psychology
- 1:09department of
- 1:11yeah so we're gonna be doing some super
- 1:13professional deep psychoanalysis
- 1:15of these you know i mean we are going to
- 1:17be talking about it after so basically
- 1:19how this is going to go
- 1:20is me natalie i will be kind of telling
- 1:24sarah the story of a specific serial
- 1:27killer or criminal
- 1:28in this case we're going to be talking
- 1:30about dennis raider
- 1:31otherwise known as btk we're going to be
- 1:33calling him dennis throughout the
- 1:34episode because
- 1:35he wants to be called btk and we're not
- 1:37getting him oh satisfaction yeah
- 1:44so we're gonna be talking about dennis
- 1:46um i
- 1:47in certain instances i will have to call
- 1:48him btk because
- 1:50of how he's you know we'll see you'll
- 1:53understand and i might
- 1:54slip up and actually call dennis but
- 1:56dennis is his name
- 1:57and i'm not going to give him the
- 1:59satisfaction so
- 2:01this is most likely going to be more
- 2:03than one part because you know we're
- 2:04both english majors and accidentally did
- 2:0620
- 2:15just some preliminary reasons so
- 2:16preliminary research on dennis i watched
- 2:18an hour and a half episode
- 2:19snapped great show read a lot of
- 2:22articles
- 2:23so i think what we're going to do is
- 2:25start with like
- 2:26his early life his first crimes
- 2:30and then so like a little bit of a
- 2:31dentist little babe dennis
- 2:34we'll see how interesting it is he's not
- 2:35like the rest that he would expect
- 2:37he's the rest of them
- 2:41but so we're gonna talk about his early
- 2:42life um and then we'll go into his
- 2:45initial crimes
- 2:47and then depending how crazy and
- 2:49detailed i get with it talking about it
- 2:51we'll either finish it up with his you
- 2:54know trial conviction
- 2:55and then analysis of his behavior in
- 2:57this episode or we'll do part two so
- 2:59yeah stay tuned guys for part two if
- 3:01that ends up happening
- 3:04okay dennis lynn raider can we also talk
- 3:07about that live stream
- 3:08but can we also talk about how serial
- 3:10killers always seem to have three names
- 3:12like john wayne gacy
- 3:14yeah i feel like that's a thing there's
- 3:16another one other than him with three
- 3:17names though
- 3:19i can't think of this moment but it is a
- 3:21thing trust me everyone will know be
- 3:22like how are you not coming up with
- 3:23another one okay stupid and you put me
- 3:25on the spot
- 3:27okay ready ready so dennis lin raider
- 3:31was born in pittsburgh kansas on march
- 3:349th 1945. it's from kansas yeah this is
- 3:38this takes place in wichita so he was
- 3:40the oldest of four sons
- 3:42to william and dorothea
- 3:48so apparently it is said that he was
- 3:50dropped on his head when he was a kid
- 3:51but there isn't a lot of info about
- 3:53when and like if it really there's
- 3:56nothing really specific about oh my god
- 3:58my
- 3:58dog rita just the couch we're really
- 4:01professional here
- 4:02sorry to hear your background dog mice
- 4:04is anyways
- 4:06so apparently he was dropped on his head
- 4:08but
- 4:09we just don't really know a lot of
- 4:10details about that okay
- 4:13also his mom was not super attentive
- 4:17and and she had her mom his grandparents
- 4:20kind of help out
- 4:22um in post-arrest interviews what do you
- 4:24mean like what do you mean
- 4:25she was just like she was kind of absent
- 4:26they like worked a lot and he resented
- 4:28them for it
- 4:29it's the kind of obvious like kid
- 4:31resents his parents for not being around
- 4:32a lot
- 4:33but they were she wasn't like she was
- 4:35from what we know he had a very normal
- 4:37childhood which is what
- 4:38why he's so different like his parents
- 4:41were like chill like they weren't like
- 4:43from what we know he was having sex with
- 4:44other people no like you know how like
- 4:46all the other ones are like crazy
- 4:47abusive and there's always like that
- 4:48weird mother dynamic which yeah yeah
- 4:50weird like creepy horrible [ __ ] that
- 4:52from what we know of and what he has
- 4:54said himself
- 4:54was not the case which is it was just
- 4:56kind of that
- 4:58he so he just like wasn't happy he said
- 5:02so he says in a post-arrest interview he
- 5:04said he got along real well with dad but
- 5:07mom
- 5:08always wasn't quite happy i always loved
- 5:11her i still love her but i did have a
- 5:12little
- 5:13a little bit of a grudge against mama
- 5:15what the [ __ ] i know so
- 5:17so like he felt ignored by his parents
- 5:20because they work long hours but why did
- 5:22he
- 5:23that's interesting that he didn't like
- 5:25he's like i don't care about my dad but
- 5:26like mom
- 5:27yeah he likes mama and then and it's
- 5:29very typical of serial killers to like
- 5:31have
- 5:32[ __ ] issues with their their yeah
- 5:33yeah it's very
- 5:35you know i actually did read about that
- 5:37in an oxford like journal so
- 5:39it's true i'm not just saying that guys
- 5:41um
- 5:42so what's fascinating that makes sense
- 5:44because like
- 5:46men who hate women would kill women and
- 5:49like if they hate their mother that's
- 5:51yeah it makes sense so so what's crazy
- 5:53about dennis is he began developing
- 5:56sadistic sexual fantasies
- 5:58at a really early age focusing on like
- 6:00how early we were talking
- 6:02like by middle school or by high school
- 6:04he was literally stealing panties and
- 6:05stuff like this is very early like
- 6:07like so he uh started cutting out
- 6:10females from magazines and drawing ropes
- 6:12and gags on them
- 6:13and gluing them onto index care cards he
- 6:16carried around with him
- 6:18that that is creepy at like any age like
- 6:21any age
- 6:21carrying those like weird index cards
- 6:24around with you and anything sexual why
- 6:26would you
- 6:27carry that on in a person like why you
- 6:28need that on the you need it on the go
- 6:30like
- 6:31that you need access to it at all times
- 6:34like why
- 6:35literally like an adult would probably
- 6:38or even a child i feel like would put
- 6:39that in like a hiding
- 6:41spot oh he just he needed them he needed
- 6:43access to them so
- 6:45as a teenager he became a peeping tom
- 6:49watching women through their windows
- 6:50stealing their underwear
- 6:53he did some stuff with animals we were
- 6:54not even going to get into i don't want
- 6:55to know i don't want to know death but
- 6:56like
- 6:57we can't because here we're not going to
- 6:59get done
- 7:01wait um for the women
- 7:04that he was like peeping tom
- 7:07being a peeping pup i don't know peeping
- 7:12um were like were they a specific age
- 7:15did they like
- 7:16look like his mom no there's nothing
- 7:17specific and that's another interesting
- 7:19thing we can talk about later is he
- 7:21doesn't have a specific victim
- 7:22like a type no he's not like ted bundy
- 7:25who had his whole specific
- 7:26female look with the brown hair or
- 7:28whatever not like that which is also why
- 7:30he's so hard to find they talk about why
- 7:32he was little yeah so according to
- 7:35forensic
- 7:36psychology professor dr kathleen ramsey
- 7:38who wrote a book on btk in 2016 she
- 7:40interviewed him
- 7:42i'm sorry yes on dennis oh my gosh when
- 7:45dennis was young
- 7:46his mother's ring got caught on a couch
- 7:48spring and she couldn't get her hand out
- 7:50she apparently was terrified and told
- 7:52him to get help
- 7:53and he felt the first springs of arousal
- 7:57yeah
- 7:58right over this like it was extremely
- 8:00terrible yes it was exciting for him
- 8:02to see a woman helpless and she says
- 8:06that this and this is like her she has
- 8:07dr ramsey has had conversations with him
- 8:10this is not her making stuff up um so he
- 8:12obviously told her this
- 8:13uh it was the beginning of his ideas
- 8:15about women he wanted to keep them
- 8:17trapped helpless and looking to him in
- 8:18terror
- 8:19um this became imprinted on his mind it
- 8:21became the image he always was after
- 8:24he says maybe because it was like the
- 8:26only time she was attending to him
- 8:28that's possible you know like it doesn't
- 8:29seem like he was super neglectful just
- 8:31like kind of typical
- 8:32but yeah well he he could interpret that
- 8:35yeah but i just find that interesting
- 8:38that like the
- 8:39it's like all her attention is on him he
- 8:41has complete control
- 8:43it's oh he's very much out of control
- 8:46very much
- 8:47so he says the quote-unquote problems
- 8:49started in grade school
- 8:50in terms of the sexual fantasies who's a
- 8:52dennis
- 8:55and he acknowledges that all men had
- 8:56sexual fantasies but his weirder than
- 8:58other people so he knows this even at a
- 9:00young age he recognizes well you'd
- 9:01[ __ ] hope so
- 9:02jesus yeah so ramsay said let me see
- 9:06do you have your did you bring your did
- 9:07you bring your index cards
- 9:10like instead of creating a pokemon
- 9:11instead of joining pokemon
- 9:15says it snapped that during his high
- 9:17school years at wichita heights
- 9:19dennis was quiet um and not highly
- 9:21social
- 9:22pretty girls made him feel powerless and
- 9:24threw off his sense of control
- 9:26once again cutting out those images uh
- 9:29he would also this is even weirder
- 9:31he didn't only want images of other
- 9:33people bound he would bind himself
- 9:35and use a tripod polaroid and take these
- 9:37weird-ass
- 9:38fantasy photos of himself like in
- 9:40women's clothes and makeup
- 9:41and bondage and like interesting yes so
- 9:44he would take photos of himself
- 9:46like playing the role of the victim and
- 9:49he loved it
- 9:51so he then went to wichita state
- 9:53university in 1964
- 9:55did did he ever have like a girlfriend
- 9:57sorry did he ever like date anyone
- 10:00it didn't say if he really doesn't seem
- 10:02like he has
- 10:03[Music]
- 10:05okay so he went to wichita state
- 10:08university 1964 dropped out of college
- 10:10and joined the us
- 10:11air force when he was 21. so
- 10:14over time raider becomes more bold with
- 10:17his sexual
- 10:18statism when he was in the air force he
- 10:21drew his fantasies on paper and then
- 10:23burned him burned them when he left the
- 10:25base
- 10:26uh he claimed that he wasn't like like
- 10:29got rid of all the evidence like he
- 10:30didn't want anyone to find it to be like
- 10:31burn them all
- 10:32up like right after he drew them he'd
- 10:34like draw them and then first
- 10:35it wasn't exactly clear but either way
- 10:37he was like no one see these
- 10:39places okay so like
- 10:43that's better than the index cards he's
- 10:44learning oh
- 10:46sure yeah i guess yeah that's better
- 10:49um he claimed that he was into
- 10:51prostitutes but they didn't want to do
- 10:52bondage
- 10:53uh he also broke into homes and stole
- 10:55underwear so kind of consistency
- 10:58yeah he took trophies and would place
- 11:01them around wichita for easy access
- 11:03which he called quote-unquote hidey
- 11:06holes
- 11:07yeah like a like he called his little
- 11:10like trophy hideouts hiding holes that's
- 11:25so he went to church with his parents in
- 11:27his mid-20s where he met
- 11:29paula they went on a few dates and he
- 11:32shortly asked her
- 11:33to marry him she said yes and they
- 11:36married in
- 11:37may 1971 when dennis was 26 years old
- 11:41davis so they have a son in 1975
- 11:44a year after his first murder in 1974
- 11:47and
- 11:48i'm just giving you like context overall
- 11:50but we'll get into it but i just want to
- 11:51say this so you have a picture
- 11:53okay so they have a son in 1975 a year
- 11:55after his first murder in 1974 which we
- 11:57will go into
- 11:58and a daughter in 1978 in the middle of
- 12:01his other killing so this man
- 12:03is a married man with children
- 12:06committing crimes cosplaying as a family
- 12:08yes and that's what made him
- 12:10so impossible to find because they
- 12:13profiled him
- 12:13correctly we will go into it so
- 12:17paul it's fascinating so paula and
- 12:19dennis were happy in their early years
- 12:20they went to
- 12:21the church things also oh my god they
- 12:23went to church regularly
- 12:25and they had a routine life uh this did
- 12:27not last long though because dennis got
- 12:29laid off of work
- 12:31and they lived off a palace salary what
- 12:33what did he do
- 12:34he had odd jobs like he didn't really
- 12:36have a real career um and
- 12:38this obviously made him feel very
- 12:39emasculated and worthless
- 12:41and made him angry and depressed and
- 12:43he's sleeping i'm not into his sadistic
- 12:44pants he's probably also
- 12:45[ __ ] hated that woman i'm sure
- 12:48the woman was making the money and
- 12:51carrying the dog for a bit
- 12:52and caring carrying the weight you know
- 12:54when she should be
- 12:56probably just taking care of the house
- 12:58yeah do your job
- 12:59uh just like do your job just like swipe
- 13:02and like shut up just do it so so
- 13:06um this was you know he felt like he had
- 13:08lost control in his home life poor
- 13:09dennis
- 13:13it's so sad so the note cards were just
- 13:15not cutting it anymore he would start
- 13:17following women in supermarkets into
- 13:19their
- 13:20cars and would envision capturing them
- 13:22and tying them up
- 13:23ew like like he wouldn't go in their
- 13:25cars but he'd follow them
- 13:26to their right he'd follow them to their
- 13:28cars yeah he called it trolling
- 13:30which is like bro so can't use that word
- 13:32because like we like
- 13:37because he had nothing else to do his
- 13:39fantasies became more and more elaborate
- 13:40like
- 13:41by not having this job and a distraction
- 13:43he just you know
- 13:44really got involved into these fantasies
- 13:46yeah it was during this
- 13:48time that he dreamed of becoming the
- 13:50biggest serial of all
- 13:52serial killer of all time so he's an
- 13:54egomaniac he heard of the headline
- 13:56grabbing killers
- 13:57like the boston strangler and manson and
- 13:59he wanted that attention
- 14:10yeah so he was an egomaniac and the need
- 14:12for the fantasy
- 14:14to be real like could not be stopped he
- 14:15just could not so
- 14:17the first murder occurred on january 15
- 14:211974 and dennis says
- 14:24these victims were quote unquote
- 14:26projects
- 14:27and once you lock in on a certain person
- 14:31that's the victim vote
- 14:34i wait yes so he called his victims
- 14:38projects
- 14:39so the first murders as i said murders
- 14:42like how many are we talking can you
- 14:44give me a number
- 14:45for the beginning murderers family
- 14:48yes so the otero family and this is
- 14:52what's so interesting is
- 14:52these victims are not like i said they
- 14:54don't follow a certain kind of
- 14:56type yeah i mean they tend to be women
- 14:59but
- 14:59obviously
- 15:03this is this is really sad so um
- 15:06the murders occurred on january 15th
- 15:081974 and he had targeted this whole
- 15:11family and it is said that he was
- 15:12actually kind of focused on
- 15:15the daughter josephine 11 year old
- 15:1811. yeah so the husband and wife for
- 15:21joseph and julia
- 15:22otero and their two children
- 15:24nine-year-old joseph junior and
- 15:26eleven-year-old josephine
- 15:27um and he committed the crime in the
- 15:30morning
- 15:31like in the middle of the day while some
- 15:32of the kids were at school like this
- 15:34in the middle of the day in a normal
- 15:35little community this they attack them
- 15:37in their homes so like
- 15:39wouldn't their kids be at school do that
- 15:42so
- 15:42you'll say come home too so when dennis
- 15:45was trolling for potential victims the
- 15:46first dude that took his eye were julie
- 15:48and josephine
- 15:49um he had seen them pulling out of their
- 15:51driveway one day became fascinated with
- 15:53josephine which is
- 15:54so funny just like you're so like
- 15:57terrifying yeah completely so
- 16:01uh you know he knew that this was the
- 16:04middle of the day he could tell the
- 16:05family had a dog this was a high risk
- 16:07crime
- 16:08and he still did it he still did this so
- 16:11according to raider
- 16:12he snuck into their detached barrage
- 16:15he'd also cut their phone lines which is
- 16:17so
- 16:17like scream to me you know yeah it's
- 16:19just so creepy
- 16:20wait wait like he cut the phone lines
- 16:22and then snuck into their
- 16:24uh detached garage and waited for his
- 16:26opportunity so a little after 8 30
- 16:28a.m joseph jr had opened the back door
- 16:31of the house to let their dog out
- 16:32into the yard oh my god um comes from
- 16:36the backyard with a knife and a 22
- 16:37caliber
- 16:38pistol and forces the boy back inside
- 16:40and confronts the entire family
- 16:42what did the dog like attack him you
- 16:44know he kind of like the dog's outside
- 16:46and then they close
- 16:46he goes into the house oh yeah because
- 16:49the boy had let the dog out and then he
- 16:51immediately come saying you know he was
- 16:52like right by the door
- 16:53so surprised the dog doesn't smell them
- 16:55or like get up i mean like my dogs
- 16:57wouldn't
- 16:57i mean actually they were no they're
- 16:59totally what yeah but so
- 17:01it didn't it didn't so in order to keep
- 17:03them at ease this is so [ __ ] up he
- 17:05told them it was a robbery and and that
- 17:07if they would fade him
- 17:08he wouldn't kill them which was a lie
- 17:10yeah
- 17:12so they allowed themselves to be taken
- 17:14into the parents allowed themselves to
- 17:16be taken into the bedroom and tied up
- 17:18uh and a post-arrest interview raider
- 17:19says he wasn't wearing a mask so they
- 17:21could have id'd him and that's when he
- 17:22decided he needed to strangle them
- 17:24which i don't believe i'm like you went
- 17:25in there with that intention like don't
- 17:27even with that like
- 17:28you could have worn a mask you didn't
- 17:29decide write that in there so f
- 17:31you dennis i don't believe you so
- 17:33looking dennis
- 17:34yeah so we killed the oteros by
- 17:36strangulation and suffocation using a
- 17:38length of rope
- 17:39and plastic bags um this is really gross
- 17:42and horrible sometimes you would allow
- 17:43them to catch the breath and regain
- 17:45consciousness just so you could strangle
- 17:46them again um nothing altogether
- 17:50they were no no i'll explain none of
- 17:53them were sexually
- 17:54assaulted but there was semen found at
- 17:56the scene
- 17:58uh up becoming relevant a lot later so
- 18:00at 3 30 p.m
- 18:02that day the three older otero brothers
- 18:04came home
- 18:05oh there's more kids there's five kids
- 18:07total and
- 18:08only two girls okay so the others
- 18:11were at school um and the bodies were
- 18:14found by one of them
- 18:15fifteen-year-old charlie which is just
- 18:17like poor kid um
- 18:18in his interview with snap so as an
- 18:20adult he's in this show he says
- 18:22he'd gone to school early that day and
- 18:23that probably saved his life uh because
- 18:25he wasn't there at the house like wow
- 18:28um and so he said he had gone through
- 18:30the back door opened it and saw his
- 18:32mom's purse i think it just
- 18:33something didn't look right like he knew
- 18:35something was wrong and he ran down the
- 18:37hall to his parents room and saw them
- 18:38laying there
- 18:39he said he knew they were dead instantly
- 18:41and you could smell the blood and fear
- 18:43which is just so sad
- 18:44you must feel um he couldn't untie the
- 18:47knots
- 18:47um so he knew he needed to call the
- 18:49police but dennis had cut the phone line
- 18:51so they went into the yard
- 18:52and the other brother danny they ran
- 18:54next door call 9-1-1
- 18:56uh the police came and charlie told them
- 18:57to go to the house to figure out what
- 18:59happened yeah
- 19:00what about the kids well i'm gonna tell
- 19:02you so
- 19:03the parents were bound and gagged in the
- 19:04bedroom they clearly put up a struggle
- 19:07uh the police continued to search the
- 19:09house and they found joey in his room
- 19:11beside the bunk bed
- 19:12with ligature marks on his neck they
- 19:14found josephine in the basement
- 19:16and she was hanging from a sewer pipe
- 19:18and there was dry semen found on the
- 19:20floor
- 19:21so it was you know she wasn't physically
- 19:24violated it was clearly like a sexual
- 19:25crime
- 19:26uh so he like pleasured himself
- 19:30um at the scene the wichita police were
- 19:32shocked at how gruesome it was
- 19:34and that it was in the middle of the day
- 19:36clearly pre-planned he brought
- 19:37everything he needed to carry out the
- 19:39crimes like all this
- 19:40you know yeah whatever it was that he
- 19:42used to tie him up and stuff
- 19:43uh there was no signs of forced entry
- 19:45and no signs of robbery except for
- 19:47joseph ortero's missing watch
- 19:49raider even left in their car and the
- 19:51police later found the car a short
- 19:53distance away parked in a grocery store
- 19:54parking lot
- 19:56they were able to get an idea for
- 19:57witnesses as to who drove the car it was
- 19:59a male caucasian probably in their 30s
- 20:01but
- 20:02it you know yeah they're
- 20:10i'm not just saying that the
- 20:13circumstances around the crime didn't
- 20:14immediately scream serial killer uh but
- 20:16because they found the semen
- 20:18i mean there's i mean it doesn't mean
- 20:20serial killer because
- 20:21there's a specific there's a definition
- 20:24of serial killer which we'll talk about
- 20:25like
- 20:26consecutive yeah there's like a multiple
- 20:29cold like cooling off period yeah and
- 20:31then they come back so this this would
- 20:32be more concerning it's free
- 20:34at this time because they just know he
- 20:35killed multiple people but they know
- 20:36that it there's something more to it
- 20:38because of this
- 20:39they know it's like it's likely that
- 20:40it's going to happen again
- 20:42they don't know that for sure um the
- 20:45police chief
- 20:46richard lamonian said the press the
- 20:49crimes
- 20:50uh perpetrated by a homicidal killer
- 20:51with a fetish so they knew that this was
- 20:53a killer
- 20:54but they they didn't know exactly what
- 20:56the situation was
- 20:57um so from the witnesses of the driver
- 21:00as well as the
- 21:01sexual nature of the crime they looked
- 21:02into a list of sexual offenders and
- 21:04tried to hold it on some people but i
- 21:05just
- 21:06they were not getting an answer uh
- 21:10so our next victim is kathryn bright
- 21:14only three months so this is a very
- 21:16short cold off period and then he takes
- 21:17much longer periods you'll see he's like
- 21:19inconsistent with that which is really
- 21:20weird
- 21:21so inner response times um between
- 21:26responses
- 21:29between successful responses of that
- 21:30behavior yeah so there's varying
- 21:33that makes sense i wonder what the
- 21:34average would be
- 21:39yeah we'll talk about the different
- 21:40types so catherine was 21 years old in a
- 21:42wichita state university student
- 21:44so only three months after the ontario
- 21:47killings
- 21:47radar struck again on april 4th 1974
- 21:51breaking into katherine bright's home
- 21:53when she wasn't there
- 21:54there's just one girl that lives there
- 21:57yes so he waited for her return when she
- 21:59came back with her younger brother
- 22:01kevin they were greeted with a man with
- 22:03a gun so he was not expecting kevin to
- 22:05be there
- 22:06uh they fought him and dennis shot kevin
- 22:09in the head
- 22:10he then took catherine in the bedroom
- 22:12and started to tie her up
- 22:13initially he started strangling her but
- 22:16she put up a big fight so he took a
- 22:17knife
- 22:18and stabbed her repeatedly in the
- 22:19abdomen
- 22:21kevin is not dead kevin at the same time
- 22:24was able to get up and run out of the
- 22:26house screaming for help
- 22:27when the authorities arrived the
- 22:29perpetrator was gone and they found
- 22:30catherine with multiple injuries but
- 22:32still alive
- 22:33she was stabbed three times in abdomen
- 22:35and had literature marks around her
- 22:36throat from the strangulation
- 22:37she was dressed to the hospital but
- 22:39unfortunately she died a few
- 22:41hours later from the injuries yeah at
- 22:44the time the police did not draw a
- 22:45connection between the ontario murders
- 22:46and catherine because they did not
- 22:48you know have similarities i mean kind
- 22:54of do
- 22:55there's no it's not the same victim
- 22:58profile though i guess
- 22:59yeah and it's not the i mean there are
- 23:02and there's stabbing
- 23:03instead of this just strangulation
- 23:04instead of just straight yes but there
- 23:06is also strangulation
- 23:09yes interesting but there's a gut yeah
- 23:11but he hadn't done it last time
- 23:14so once again like a [ __ ] pompous
- 23:16weirdo that he is he doesn't wear a mask
- 23:18and so
- 23:19yeah like he's like i will do a sketch
- 23:22for you yeah so kevin's like i'll give a
- 23:23description and so he was like five ten
- 23:26uh you know white man dark haired
- 23:28mustache they made a composite sketch
- 23:29but it didn't bleed anymore
- 23:31because because they he looked like an
- 23:33average
- 23:35um so there were a few similarities
- 23:38between the killings the phone lines
- 23:39were cut
- 23:40home invasion all had been strangled but
- 23:42there were also major differences
- 23:44he shot the brother kathryn was stabbed
- 23:47uh
- 23:47you know the police followed every lead
- 23:49but they just they couldn't figure it
- 23:50out
- 23:50they just couldn't so everyone is
- 23:52freaked out because there's five
- 23:53unsolved murders within three months in
- 23:55wichita
- 23:56you know kansas it's crazy how big is
- 23:59like is that
- 24:00i don't know i don't think it's a
- 24:01particularly big city i don't want to
- 24:03get false information about the
- 24:04statistics
- 24:06but yeah i mean it's you know it's a
- 24:09nice town people are getting murdered
- 24:10it's terrible so
- 24:11the raider loved the attention that his
- 24:13healing is really yeah of course that's
- 24:15the function of his vineyard desperately
- 24:16craved it and when his crimes were not
- 24:18making newspapers and
- 24:19headlines anymore he would attempt to
- 24:21rekindle public interest
- 24:23by writing to the media i was just gonna
- 24:25say please
- 24:26yep mr dennis
- 24:30yep attention seeking so his first
- 24:33attempt at communication
- 24:35happened on october uh in october 1974
- 24:38nine months after he killed the oteros
- 24:41and i think that's six months after he
- 24:42killed catherine
- 24:43so raider contacted the wichita eagle
- 24:46anonymously he told them this is so
- 24:48ridiculous
- 24:50he told them to look inside it was a
- 24:52specific engineering book at the local
- 24:54library where they one of those [ __ ]
- 24:56hidey holes
- 24:56yeah where i found a letter
- 25:00whose author claimed to be responsible
- 25:02for the otero murders while also
- 25:03dismissing the other suspects
- 25:05as just losers you know like but not the
- 25:08real deal
- 25:10like well the real sounds right yeah
- 25:15the letter contained details about the
- 25:16killings and the scene that were not
- 25:18released
- 25:18the public so the police knew that this
- 25:21was the real deal
- 25:22um the police asked the newspaper not to
- 25:24publish it in order to prevent more
- 25:26false confessions
- 25:27and the eagle complied but somehow they
- 25:29got to another
- 25:30uh newspaper the wichita sun and leaked
- 25:33them and they got their hands on it and
- 25:34published it
- 25:35in december so here's some i'm going to
- 25:38read you the excerpt
- 25:39and it's he spells a lot of things wrong
- 25:41it's very odd because he's not stupid
- 25:43it's
- 25:43they think him yeah so he says i write
- 25:46this letter to you for the sake of the
- 25:48taxpayer as well as your time
- 25:51those three dudes you have in custody
- 25:53are just talking to get publicity for
- 25:55the otero murders
- 25:56they knew nothing at all i did it by
- 25:58myself and with no one's help
- 26:00i'm sorry this happened to society they
- 26:02are the ones who suffer the most it's
- 26:04hard to control myself
- 26:06when this monster enter my brain i will
- 26:09never know
- 26:10but it here to stay but how does one
- 26:12cure himself
- 26:14if you ask for help that you have killed
- 26:16four people they will laugh or hit the
- 26:18panic button and call the cops
- 26:20i can't stop it so the monster goes on
- 26:22and hurt me as well as society
- 26:25society can be thankful that there are
- 26:27ways for people
- 26:28like me to relieve myself at times by
- 26:32daydreams
- 26:33of some victims being torture and being
- 26:36mine
- 26:37maybe you can stop him i can't he has
- 26:39already chosen his next
- 26:41victim or victims i don't know who they
- 26:43are yet
- 26:44the next day after i read the paper i
- 26:46will know but it too late
- 26:48good luck hunting yours truly guiltily
- 26:51ps
- 26:51since sex criminals do not change their
- 26:53mo or by nature cannot do so
- 26:55i will not change mine the code word for
- 26:58me will be
- 26:58find them torture them kill them btk
- 27:02you see he added again they will be
- 27:06on the next victim what will be
- 27:11so first of all the fact that he says
- 27:13like you guys should be happy i can
- 27:14relieve myself of daydreams like [ __ ]
- 27:16you
- 27:16dude yeah also the fact that he named
- 27:19himself is
- 27:20literally so gross so cringe and so
- 27:22gross and just so
- 27:24so bizarro and weird it's like also just
- 27:26like really dorky it's so lame like it's
- 27:28so embarrassing
- 27:31like um all those other people who are
- 27:33saying that like they're me
- 27:35like they're not me and like actually
- 27:37like you should probably call me this
- 27:39yeah actually
- 27:42i'm special so you can give me a special
- 27:44name
- 27:45and like you should be thanking me
- 27:47actually like because you're like such a
- 27:48good friend to society
- 27:50yeah so what's also because he didn't
- 27:53mention catherine which was odd
- 27:54um yeah because this is the family yeah
- 27:57but that's why the police
- 27:58did not connect them at all because
- 28:09[Music]
- 28:15could you be weirder dude like just be
- 28:16more of a creep so
- 28:18unfortunately it stuck uh well yeah
- 28:21obviously yeah because i've heard
- 28:22yeah i've heard it i've heard of that uh
- 28:25and apparently catherine ramsey says in
- 28:28snapped
- 28:29the woman the professor had interviewed
- 28:31at the doctor that when
- 28:32he wanted to become a famous jailer
- 28:34killer he had quote he wanted a really
- 28:37interesting sexy powerful name
- 28:40what yeah that's what he wanted and so
- 28:42he came up with that name and i'm just
- 28:44like dude your name is dennis and you're
- 28:45married to paul and you're living a
- 28:47normal life
- 28:48and but you're also like your mother's
- 28:50name is
- 28:51deborah yeah no dorothea
- 28:55whatever same [ __ ] like you know yeah
- 28:58you know what i'm saying
- 29:00so raider stops for a few years years
- 29:03years yes was it the other one weren't
- 29:05the other ones like
- 29:07each other yeah you'll see it's so
- 29:09bizarre there's no consistency
- 29:11he has a son with his wife as i said
- 29:13before in 1975
- 29:15that was a year a year after his first
- 29:17murders
- 29:18so dennis was excited to be a father and
- 29:20his fantasy life kind of went on the
- 29:22back burner because he was really busy
- 29:24with his home life and his job uh he was
- 29:26working at adt securities he was
- 29:28[ __ ] going inside people's homes and
- 29:30installing security systems
- 29:32oh jesus that's like my worst that is
- 29:37like the like the
- 29:40person that you probably shouldn't hire
- 29:42like for that job it's literally
- 29:44one person that should probably not it
- 29:46couldn't be a worse nightmare for me
- 29:47that yeah
- 29:48installing your security as a serial
- 29:49killer so but that's for real that's not
- 29:51a problem
- 29:55so some criminologists think that this
- 29:57was why he was able to lay low for three
- 29:59years because he had this power going
- 30:00into these people's houses and they
- 30:02think that kind of
- 30:03was able to satiate him right like he
- 30:04didn't have to
- 30:06he was able to get that reinforcement
- 30:08yes without
- 30:09going full time less response effort
- 30:12yeah so we have a lot of access and
- 30:14didn't have to do the same thing
- 30:16so it's his replacement
- 30:19alternative replacement behavior read up
- 30:22yeah so dennis had this extremely long
- 30:23cooling off period
- 30:25um and the coolant period is what they
- 30:27say what criminals call
- 30:28you know when they go dormant that's
- 30:29right i would call that the in a
- 30:31response time
- 30:33in a response time yeah yeah we're
- 30:35learning here people
- 30:37because it's the the time that elapses
- 30:40between
- 30:40excessive responses
- 30:44so he did not strike again until march
- 30:4717th
- 30:481977. yeah three years after his first
- 30:51kiss
- 30:52that's crazy yeah he attacked
- 30:55shirley i don't know if it's
- 30:59in her home she was there with her three
- 31:01children all under the age of eight
- 31:03she also you know she was a very sweet
- 31:05lady she's staying in her church choir
- 31:07so shirley was at home and her children
- 31:09were outside on the sidewalk when they
- 31:11were approached by an individual
- 31:12who showed them a photograph and asked
- 31:14if they had seen his wife
- 31:16he knew if they were kids there was
- 31:17probably mom in the house
- 31:19uh he asked if their mom was home they
- 31:20said yes and they took him to the door
- 31:21they're just like
- 31:22little kids well i hope they [ __ ]
- 31:25they're okay
- 31:26good thank god like they're not inside
- 31:28yeah
- 31:30like they wouldn't back out to play in
- 31:31the front hopefully so shirley came to
- 31:33the door and then dennis forced himself
- 31:35inside
- 31:35uh he took control of him physically and
- 31:37the kids were fine so he put them in the
- 31:39bathroom and threw him some toys
- 31:41um and tied the door shut okay so in an
- 31:43interview decades later i have a
- 31:44question
- 31:45yes were all the children
- 31:48male 1 that's a really good question i
- 31:51actually
- 31:51don't know
- 31:54but i guess he killed the boy in the
- 31:56first murder
- 31:57he killed his son right because but
- 32:00there was also because there was
- 32:01the girl the 11 year old that he wanted
- 32:03to yes masturbate to yes while he
- 32:05tortured her so yeah like the disgusting
- 32:08creep movie is yeah
- 32:09so i'm just wondering if like he's like
- 32:11oh there's no
- 32:12we call it like s delta it's like
- 32:15there's no i can't get reinforcement
- 32:16from this
- 32:18there's nothing that i can get out of
- 32:19this so like
- 32:21i i can't contact reinforcement here so
- 32:23i'm gonna look elsewhere
- 32:25well so that's really interesting in a
- 32:26later interview he said that he
- 32:29wanted to kill them but he like had to
- 32:30leave the scene you just don't really
- 32:32know
- 32:32interesting uh but it's not like he was
- 32:36caught like he was with the other one or
- 32:38he just didn't kill them
- 32:41so yeah that's a good point i don't
- 32:42really know but so police found shirley
- 32:44on the bed face down with her hands and
- 32:46feet bound
- 32:47having been suffocated what skin with
- 32:48the plastic bag over her head and
- 32:50struggled with the cord around her neck
- 32:52um there was semen found like on her
- 32:54head
- 32:56so according to snapped um this is so
- 32:58sad her son was like looking through the
- 33:00door
- 33:00like the hole in the door no i'm
- 33:03watching his mom being murdered so the
- 33:05children confirmed it was a white male
- 33:07and could have been similar to the other
- 33:08orders but it was not 100
- 33:11but they did suspect btk because the
- 33:13crime scenes were very similar to the
- 33:15otero
- 33:15so what happened in broad daylight it
- 33:17was premeditated the method was the same
- 33:19the phone lines were cut
- 33:20he was the same type of knot when he
- 33:22tied the cord oh that
- 33:24was an important detail that was kept
- 33:25out of the newspaper so it's not like it
- 33:27was reported on so
- 33:29copycats
- 33:32so then nine months later we have
- 33:34another victim that makes sense
- 33:36given his the previous where it was
- 33:38three months
- 33:39so now he has a slightly longer key
- 33:42interesting
- 33:43yes but it does seem like he goes
- 33:44dormant and he kills again and kills
- 33:45again
- 33:46yeah uh although you know this is nine
- 33:48months later but it's not three years
- 33:49right uh so nine months later nancy fox
- 33:52so
- 33:53um the same nine months later the same
- 33:56year he killed 25 year old nancy fox she
- 33:58was a career woman who worked at a
- 33:59jewelry store
- 34:01raider says you know post arrest she was
- 34:03another one of the projects when i was
- 34:05trolling the area
- 34:07i noticed her going into the house one
- 34:09night i drive by once to check the
- 34:11mailbox to see what her name was
- 34:12found out where she worked the more i
- 34:14knew about a person the more i felt
- 34:16comfortable with it
- 34:18um so to raider she was the perfect
- 34:20victim she was the teach she left alone
- 34:22well thank god for that actually because
- 34:24i don't want any more kids
- 34:26yeah yeah um so she was found on
- 34:28december 8th in her home bound and
- 34:30strangled she was not physically
- 34:31violated but once again there was semen
- 34:33found on the
- 34:34negligee next to her bed right next to
- 34:37her
- 34:37i'm sorry um this time though btk did
- 34:40something different
- 34:42dennis [ __ ] dennis i know it's man
- 34:46i know it's dennis did something
- 34:48different he called his own
- 34:49murder to the police the day after the
- 34:53murder the police department got a call
- 34:54saying you will find a homicide at 843
- 34:57south pershing street nancy fox
- 34:59purging which is the street i used to
- 35:00live on that gave me the willies but
- 35:01anyways
- 35:02so they were look at me look at me look
- 35:04at me look at me
- 35:05so they were able to trace the phone uh
- 35:07the pay phone insecure witness that saw
- 35:09once again a white male in his thirties
- 35:11not helpful like not
- 35:12always thanks for thanks thanks for that
- 35:15so the police figured that
- 35:17dennis wanted to make sure he got the
- 35:18credit for it he was obviously obsessed
- 35:20with being recognized as
- 35:22the quota right attention attention
- 35:25so a few months later dennis wrote more
- 35:28tell letters to the media so he's just
- 35:32writing them he's
- 35:33just like i want all the attention tell
- 35:35me i'm pretty yeah
- 35:36literally though so he sends a letter to
- 35:39the wichita eagle beacon on february 10
- 35:421978. it contained a poem he titled oh
- 35:46death to nancy and states that he
- 35:48murdered seven people not six taking
- 35:50credit for catherine but not
- 35:52naming her he also
- 35:55sarah oh my god you're gonna die he also
- 35:57talks about quote-unquote
- 35:59factor x which drove him to
- 36:02kill it was him that's the lamest [ __ ]
- 36:05yeah literally [ __ ] factor x which
- 36:08showed him to kill it which is
- 36:09the factor x yeah it was the factor x
- 36:12the factor x made me duet it was not his
- 36:14fault it was factor x it was his dark
- 36:16side and something he had no control
- 36:18over
- 36:19so in a post arrest interview he says i
- 36:22personally think it's uh
- 36:23this is in quotes i personally think
- 36:25it's uh and i know it's not very
- 36:27christian of me
- 36:28but actually think it's a demon that's
- 36:30with me
- 36:33at some point in time it entered me when
- 36:36i was young and it basically controlled
- 36:38me
- 36:38and they that did people take him
- 36:40seriously i mean
- 36:41come on a lot of serial killers have
- 36:43said that as an excuse before criminal i
- 36:45just think it's like
- 36:46so i'm so such like a white man so he
- 36:48uses term factor x to describe this
- 36:50demon and
- 36:51criminologists say it's a way for him to
- 36:53kind of elude what he's done and
- 36:54distance himself from it
- 36:56um another says they think it's you know
- 36:59another criminologist says they think
- 37:00factor x is like a drug for dennis and
- 37:02dennis is a drug addict and he like
- 37:04needs that fix
- 37:05um and when the urge comes there's no he
- 37:07just loves talking about himself and he
- 37:09and he loves hearing his own [ __ ]
- 37:13and so and he wants everyone else to
- 37:15like
- 37:16lick it up yeah he wants everyone else
- 37:18to lap it up just the same way
- 37:20and so he's like making up these stupid
- 37:22terms
- 37:23oh that's so interesting though let's
- 37:26talk about
- 37:27factor x so in this
- 37:30[ __ ] letter he says so let's talk
- 37:32about factor x
- 37:33so in this in these messages he says how
- 37:35many do i have to kill before i get my
- 37:37name in the paper or some national
- 37:38attention like my dude is desperado
- 37:41for attention seriously like my dude
- 37:44needs to
- 37:44relax like dude
- 37:48he's coming so strong like really yeah
- 37:50too strong
- 37:51a lot a lot still it's just it's a lot
- 37:54it's a lot
- 37:55we could say so after these messages the
- 37:58police knew arlo is moving
- 37:59i have two dogs and they're just reading
- 38:01he doesn't like it it's a lot it's a lot
- 38:03he's offended by his messages i
- 38:05understand arlo
- 38:06is he going to drink water he's just
- 38:08going to drink water and you're going to
- 38:09hear that guys
- 38:10or i'm going to be able to edit it out
- 38:12we will see or you'll be like what is
- 38:14she talking about
- 38:15can you get back okay
- 38:18i will get back to the store right now
- 38:20so after these messages the police knew
- 38:22wichita had a
- 38:23you know full throttle serial killer
- 38:25yeah and they knew he would kill again
- 38:28and the police held a press conference
- 38:29and alerted the community that there was
- 38:31a killer
- 38:32among them and everyone was like losing
- 38:33their minds
- 38:36among us oh my god we're screaming and
- 38:37we're going to ruin the audio yeah we
- 38:39can't do that okay
- 38:40um i'm sorry i'm a screamer yeah sam so
- 38:43in june 1978 six months after nancy fox
- 38:47was killed
- 38:48dennis rader had so we have three years
- 38:51nine months
- 38:52and then six months but this is his
- 38:53heavy's daughter oh okay
- 38:56so oh that's weird though right so only
- 38:58six months after he murdered a
- 39:00woman he murdered a woman a human being
- 39:04he murdered her and then he procreates
- 39:06with his wife and has a daughter
- 39:08and he names her carrie um so during
- 39:11this time the police you know they think
- 39:13he went dormant because
- 39:14he was occupied with his family life
- 39:15like that's what criminologists think
- 39:17we're not making
- 39:18sorry criminologists say that the reason
- 39:20he's inactive
- 39:22after this is because of the birth of
- 39:24his daughter so i don't know
- 39:26i feel like if he needed it and wanted
- 39:28it he'd make time for it
- 39:30he'd find a way but what they're saying
- 39:32he like
- 39:33didn't because he was kind of busy with
- 39:36his life
- 39:36and like didn't need it i guess i think
- 39:39he's still
- 39:41well they say he was able to sustain
- 39:43himself with auto-erotic fantasies and
- 39:44the trophies he had kept from his
- 39:46previous killings and that that
- 39:47satisfied him you know
- 39:48those weird photos and [ __ ] yeah yeah so
- 39:50i guess they're saying his previous
- 39:52cards
- 39:52yes i wonder yeah i mean he didn't take
- 39:55off three years before
- 39:56yeah that's what's so weird about him
- 39:58and that's why they couldn't find him
- 39:59for so long because
- 40:00they literally could not figure him out
- 40:03he's kind of an enigma like he's very
- 40:05odd
- 40:07so the police assemble the task force
- 40:08remarkable
- 40:10he's unremarkable i agree with that but
- 40:13he's his behavior is not
- 40:14his finger's interesting yes because
- 40:17it's it's
- 40:18not necessarily the norm exactly but he
- 40:21is an unremarkable human yeah he's a
- 40:23loser he can be very clear about that
- 40:26um so the police assembled the task
- 40:29force that compiled a list of hundreds
- 40:31of suspects and they slowly whittled
- 40:32them down to literally none
- 40:34so after two years with no success the
- 40:36task force was disbanded
- 40:41so they do a task force for two years
- 40:45does he not kill again in the last two
- 40:46years okay
- 40:50so many uh began to believe that
- 40:54dennis but they don't know the stenosis
- 40:56right that btk
- 40:57right was gone from wichita um whether
- 41:00he was dead
- 41:01disabled in prison for something else um
- 41:04because he was a compulsive
- 41:05you know killer they could tell his
- 41:07crimes it was a psychopath
- 41:08that he would never willingly stop yes
- 41:10they didn't think so
- 41:11right um but this was clearly not true
- 41:14uh they'd also they had profiled him
- 41:17incorrectly so back then the police
- 41:19uh believed that he was still at if that
- 41:22if he was still
- 41:23active he must not be married and
- 41:26probably
- 41:26only have superficial relationships with
- 41:29women
- 41:29so essentially using kind of other
- 41:31well-known serial killers to profile him
- 41:34but raider was there blending into the
- 41:36community and serving as a
- 41:38cub scout leader a compliance officer
- 41:41and even a council member of the christ
- 41:43lutheran church
- 41:45ctk goes dormant for eight
- 41:48years damn that's long it's much longer
- 41:51than three
- 41:53and that is where we are going to leave
- 41:56it
- 41:56part one
- 42:00so next week next week
- 42:03the next time we post but part two we
- 42:06are going to
- 42:07discuss his final crimes his eventual
- 42:10capture which will make you
- 42:12majorly lols okay i'm i am excited
- 42:16also because like uh this earlier [ __ ]
- 42:19has already made me a lol just
- 42:20yeah because he's ridiculous right yeah
- 42:22like so late it's like so
- 42:24the way he gets caught sarah is the most
- 42:26it's so boomer i can't
- 42:27you're gonna die you're gonna die it's
- 42:28amazing so he's just such a loser he
- 42:31he gets himself caught it's amazing and
- 42:32that's what's uplifting about this
- 42:34murder is he essentially gets himself
- 42:36caught he's so lame
- 42:38and it's very uplifting so
- 42:40attention-seeking that's
- 42:41very uplifting how he gets caught yeah
- 42:43so you're gonna you guys are gonna like
- 42:44that i mean so
- 42:45i need that we will oh and also i do
- 42:48want to talk about some
- 42:49psychological uh kind of articles i read
- 42:52about him
- 42:53and i wanted to talk about the kind of
- 42:54the definitions of serial killers and
- 42:56their mo's
- 42:56and and then talk about in reference to
- 42:58him based off of this journal i read
- 43:00from harvard or oxford whatever a
- 43:02legitimate
- 43:03scientific journal okay so that's what
- 43:05will be in
- 43:06episode two so we hope you guys
- 43:09liked it and we're able to tolerate us
- 43:12yeah
- 43:13and i hope you like those like you
- 43:16really like us
- 43:17okay we'll be back
- 43:26you
