  6. 0:15miss esto how are you employed
  7. 0:17i work at the university of wisconsin in
  8. 0:19the department of medicine
  9. 0:22and did you know two individuals by the
  10. 0:25name of bart and krista halderson yes
  11. 0:29how'd you know them oh we've
  12. 0:31we've been friends for since mitchell
  13. 0:34was a baby so 25 years
  14. 0:41during that 25 years
  15. 0:45did you ever know bart and krista to go
  16. 0:46gambling no
  17. 0:50tell me about their alcohol usage
  18. 0:53when we were with them we would have
  19. 0:55wine with dinner
  20. 0:57beer but they weren't heavy drinkers
  21. 1:00did you ever know them to drink tequila
  22. 1:02or gin no
  23. 1:07so you knew bart fairly well um was bart
  24. 1:10one to have large amounts of cash lying
  25. 1:13about
  26. 1:14no
  27. 1:15can you kind of smiled can you explain
  28. 1:17that
  29. 1:18so
  30. 1:20bart bart bart's cpa he was our
  31. 1:23accountant he so i'm stereotyping cpas
  32. 1:27but he was very conservative with his
  33. 1:29money undoubtedly he bought
  34. 1:31good quality things for around the house
  35. 1:33but it wasn't like he went out to eat at
  36. 1:36expensive restaurants or
  37. 1:38bought really expensive bottles of wine
  38. 1:39he was he was conservative with his
  39. 1:41money all right
  40. 1:43he's mindful
  41. 1:44um
  42. 1:46and you're married correct yes and
  43. 1:49was your husband also friends with the
  44. 1:51haldersons yes and in fact did you guys
  45. 1:54do things together as families or
  46. 1:56couples yes we did
  47. 1:58what sort of things did you guys do
  48. 2:01oh i watched you know badger packer
  49. 2:04football games we
  50. 2:06would go to the terrace we've gone to
  51. 2:08their cabin my husband would help bart
  52. 2:12close his cabin
  53. 2:14pretty much every year
  54. 2:15except for covet during covid
  55. 2:19so
  56. 2:21i mean yeah i guess just general
  57. 2:24during covenant we would hang out at
  58. 2:26bonfires so okay
  59. 2:29i want to talk to you a little bit about
  60. 2:30the cabin how many times do you think
  61. 2:31you've been to the cabin i think i've
  62. 2:33been there two possibly three times i
  63. 2:36don't
  64. 2:38and
  65. 2:38did you and was it usually with your
  66. 2:40husband as well yes yep the four of us
  67. 2:42did you both um ride in the same car
  68. 2:45with krista or something and bart or
  69. 2:47something else no no we would take our
  70. 2:49own vehicles can you explain that a
  71. 2:51little sure when i mean when we went up
  72. 2:54to the cabin with them for the weekend
  73. 2:56um well backing up bart didn't leave a
  74. 2:58lot of equipment at the cabin so what he
  75. 3:01had at the house so if we were going to
  76. 3:02be using a chainsaw or cleaning up stuff
  77. 3:06he would have to take stuff with them in
  78. 3:08the car plus food i mean really not a
  79. 3:10lot was left at the cabin all their
  80. 3:12clothes
  81. 3:13so there's no way the four of us would
  82. 3:15have fit
  83. 3:16in
  84. 3:17their subaru or my car or my husband's
  85. 3:19car with
  86. 3:20with all our stuff so we always took
  87. 3:22several separate cars when we went up
  88. 3:24there as couples was part pretty tight
  89. 3:26in his packing
  90. 3:28did he packed well is that yeah okay
  91. 3:30yeah yes
  92. 3:34um
  93. 3:35what was uh
  94. 3:37did krista have any habits of
  95. 3:39communicating to you or to anybody else
  96. 3:41to your knowledge when they were going
  97. 3:43to the cabin yeah so um i know like they
  98. 3:46had gone to the cabin earlier in june
  99. 3:49and um we knew about that um
  100. 3:53you know i had texted her to have fun at
  101. 3:54the cabin i hope they had a nice time
  102. 3:56but typically we would
  103. 3:57know when they were going to be gone um
  104. 4:00not always but typically yes okay
  105. 4:03um
  106. 4:05were they
  107. 4:07would you were they more planned sort of
  108. 4:09individuals or were they more kind of
  109. 4:10fly by the city or pants sort of
  110. 4:12individual
  111. 4:18would you have considered them cautious
  112. 4:20in the sense of making sure somebody
  113. 4:21would know where they were going if they
  114. 4:23were planning to be up at the cabin out
  115. 4:24in the middle of
  116. 4:25the woods yes
  117. 4:29did
  118. 4:30did you know bart and krista a little
  119. 4:31bit as parents
  120. 4:33yes
  121. 4:35um if
  122. 4:36krista was going to be going away and
  123. 4:38leaving chandler
  124. 4:41for a period of time do you know if she
  125. 4:43did anything in preparation for that
  126. 4:45objection
  127. 4:48speculation foundation
  128. 4:50[Applause]
  129. 4:51perhaps lay more foundation i'll sustain
  130. 4:53but you can
  131. 4:54explore were you aware of some of
  132. 4:57krista's practices as a parent
  133. 5:00yes
  134. 5:01um did she do anything specific if she
  135. 5:03was going to be away with regarding food
  136. 5:06for chandler she would prepare food to
  137. 5:10my knowledge for chandler for the boys
  138. 5:12if they were going to be gone
  139. 5:17do you have any specific knowledge as to
  140. 5:19their practice concerning the dogs in
  141. 5:21the cabin
  142. 5:22so the cabin's very dog-friendly so
  143. 5:25they to my knowledge they typically took
  144. 5:27the dogs with them when we went with
  145. 5:30them they would bring their dogs as well
  146. 5:33um
  147. 5:34the last time i was we were there it was
  148. 5:35just one dog but they would bring the
  149. 5:37dog with them so
  150. 5:38okay so the jury got to see a video
  151. 5:41kind of a long video yesterday of the
  152. 5:43cabin and um
  153. 5:45it looks like there's a lot of property
  154. 5:47okay so places a dog could
  155. 5:50could run and swim and yes okay
  156. 5:57how often um
  157. 6:02do you know anything about christa's
  158. 6:04habits about keeping in touch with her
  159. 6:06children yes
  160. 6:08what do you know
  161. 6:09so when we have been out with them
  162. 6:11krista
  163. 6:12typically texted
  164. 6:14i don't know
  165. 6:16if it was mitchell once he had moved out
  166. 6:19and away from college but i know when
  167. 6:20chad chandler was living with them that
  168. 6:22she would text them she wasn't always in
  169. 6:24contact with her boys i
  170. 6:27we would arrive at the cabin and even
  171. 6:29though we drove in certain cars she
  172. 6:30would be texting them when she got there
  173. 6:32um i just i don't chris chrissa is a
  174. 6:36very was a very doting parent i just
  175. 6:38don't know of a time where
  176. 6:40when she was with us that she was ever
  177. 6:41out of contact with the boys
  178. 6:44and being up in the cabin did you
  179. 6:46generally have cell reception
  180. 6:49yes is that okay yes
  181. 6:51um
  182. 6:52did you
  183. 6:55how did you learn that bart and krista
  184. 6:58were missing
  185. 7:00so a police officer called me
  186. 7:03on wednesday
  187. 7:05in the afternoon to say that chas had
  188. 7:09reported them missing
  189. 7:11and
  190. 7:13if i recall there were several
  191. 7:14conversations that day but if i recall
  192. 7:16correctly asking about if i knew about
  193. 7:18the cabin
  194. 7:19um
  195. 7:20you know i remember saying that we knew
  196. 7:22how to get my husband knew how to get
  197. 7:24there so if they needed him to like give
  198. 7:26him the directions but it was it was
  199. 7:28through that police officer and then i
  200. 7:30well go ahead
  201. 7:32no you're you're fine um
  202. 7:34what if anything did you do once you
  203. 7:36learned that i was testing yeah i texted
  204. 7:39chazz and i emailed mitchell okay to
  205. 7:42offer support see what i could do
  206. 7:45offered to bring
  207. 7:47chad's food because again knowing krista
  208. 7:50that she would have left him a set
  209. 7:51amount of food
  210. 7:53um at least as been my experience we
  211. 7:55offered to bring him food down to the
  212. 7:57house okay and did he take you up on
  213. 7:59that offer he elected to come up to our
  214. 8:01house
  215. 8:02okay and where do you live in connection
  216. 8:04to the
  217. 8:05uh 4595 oak springs circle address and
  218. 8:08so just up the hill from them so you
  219. 8:11guys are neighbors yes
  220. 8:15uh and then on
  221. 8:16would you remember
  222. 8:18was it july 7th that chandler came over
  223. 8:20for dinner is that wednesday july 7th
  224. 8:22yes yes
  225. 8:24um tell me about that night uh do you
  226. 8:27remember about what time chandler
  227. 8:28arrived
  228. 8:31um
  229. 8:31it was probably somewhere around 7 45 to
  230. 8:348 p.m if i remember correctly okay and
  231. 8:37how did the evening begin
  232. 8:41just you know we expressed how sorry we
  233. 8:43were how worried we were what could we
  234. 8:45do
  235. 8:46to help
  236. 8:47um we need to talk about
  237. 8:51police going to the cabin um
  238. 8:55uh
  239. 8:56do you so do you want me to state what
  240. 8:58chandler said at this point or wow sorry
  241. 9:01no no you're fine um
  242. 9:04was your hus
  243. 9:06you said we
  244. 9:07will be your husband my husband was
  245. 9:08there okay was he there for the entire
  246. 9:10evening no he ran to grab pizza um but
  247. 9:14it was and was that pretty early on
  248. 9:17uh
  249. 9:18probably 20 to 30 minutes i'm guessing
  250. 9:21after chandler got there because we
  251. 9:23waited to tell her the pizza until she
  252. 9:25was at our house what did you and
  253. 9:27chandler do while your husband was out
  254. 9:28getting the pizza
  255. 9:30i
  256. 9:32we we talked by that
  257. 9:35point there were things that were said
  258. 9:37that
  259. 9:39just in a line with the couple that i
  260. 9:42knew so i was i went out into the
  261. 9:44kitchen
  262. 9:45um
  263. 9:46to just put some distance because i was
  264. 9:48just a bit uncomfortable okay
  265. 9:51let's back up a little bit you said that
  266. 9:53you started to feel uncomfortable and
  267. 9:55some things were said that didn't line
  268. 9:58up
  269. 9:59what was said
  270. 10:00um so chandler um was actually trying to
  271. 10:02be very assuring
  272. 10:04that um
  273. 10:06um
  274. 10:07that they had taken a large roll of cash
  275. 10:09they wanted to blow up blow off some
  276. 10:11steam they were going to go gamble
  277. 10:14um that they had taken a tote of booze
  278. 10:16with gin and tequila in it which were
  279. 10:18not
  280. 10:19as i mentioned alcohols i was aware of
  281. 10:21them drinking
  282. 10:22um so
  283. 10:23and that they drove with another couple
  284. 10:26so those things just
  285. 10:28one and one were not equal no it's just
  286. 10:30it wasn't the people i knew okay
  287. 10:34so you said you went to the kitchen why
  288. 10:36did you go to the kitchen
  289. 10:38because he um there had been he was just
  290. 10:41the things he was saying he was
  291. 10:44just very
  292. 10:45what i perceived as
  293. 10:47you know just emotionally flat just
  294. 10:50i don't know i was just i was
  295. 10:51uncomfortable so when my husband went
  296. 10:53left i stepped into the kitchen so some
  297. 10:55people are kind of emotionally flat and
  298. 10:57that's just kind of how they present
  299. 11:00was that chandler most of the time um
  300. 11:03not not to that extent so like that
  301. 11:05evening when he was at our house and he
  302. 11:07talked about the dogs and how he was
  303. 11:09frustrated that my turn he expressed
  304. 11:12concern that the dogs had been locked
  305. 11:14out in the garage during the whole time
  306. 11:16that the detectives or police were there
  307. 11:18and he got you know emotional that they
  308. 11:20didn't deserve that they shouldn't be
  309. 11:22out there so it's it was more so than
  310. 11:25when he spoke about his parents
  311. 11:27that i more emotionally flat and
  312. 11:30so he got more emotional over the dogs
  313. 11:33than his mom and dad being missing yes
  314. 11:35with with
  315. 11:36yes when he talked about the dogs there
  316. 11:38was more emotion
  317. 11:42why do you move into the kitchen
  318. 11:45i
  319. 11:46just i was i just felt uncomfortable um
  320. 11:49i just need i wanted to be
  321. 11:51i want me to be between the door and him
  322. 11:53um
  323. 11:54and again he he did not
  324. 11:56um he did not do anything that um that
  325. 11:59was uh physically
  326. 12:02um
  327. 12:03concerning i just was uncomfortable
  328. 12:06because it what he was saying it was not
  329. 12:08making sense to me
  330. 12:09okay so you put yourself between him and
  331. 12:11the door correct and when you say door i
  332. 12:13am front door the front door the door to
  333. 12:15go outside
  334. 12:16okay
  335. 12:19um
  336. 12:20what sort of things do you and chandler
  337. 12:21discuss once you're in the kitchen uh
  338. 12:24you know i don't recall that we had a
  339. 12:27lot of
  340. 12:28uh discussions um
  341. 12:30specific when we were in the kitchen we
  342. 12:32kept it light
  343. 12:34it was
  344. 12:36yeah i i really don't recall anything
  345. 12:39that occurred there um
  346. 12:42the
  347. 12:43when my husband came back
  348. 12:44and again i i don't remember was before
  349. 12:46he left when he came back we talked
  350. 12:48about he said that krista had texted him
  351. 12:51on sunday
  352. 12:53um and again i'm sorry i just don't
  353. 12:54remember that occur before my husband
  354. 12:56left for pizza
  355. 12:58when he came back but
  356. 13:00i was just it was um
  357. 13:02that's not
  358. 13:03i couldn't believe that if they had left
  359. 13:05on friday i've never ever known her in
  360. 13:0825 years
  361. 13:10once the boys were old enough to that
  362. 13:11she was out of contact from them for
  363. 13:13that length of time
  364. 13:15did you and chandler have any
  365. 13:16discussions about
  366. 13:18phones oh yes yes um
  367. 13:22so um i was trying to be reassuring that
  368. 13:25um
  369. 13:26you know don't worry because in my brain
  370. 13:28at that point
  371. 13:29i'm thinking they're in a car wreck on
  372. 13:31the side of the road something like that
  373. 13:32happen and so i said that don't worry
  374. 13:35they can track their phones
  375. 13:37um they can look at where the location
  376. 13:39the phone is and hopefully that will
  377. 13:41find them and his comment was no they
  378. 13:43can't do that
  379. 13:45okay and how did he say that just very
  380. 13:48flat they can't do that
  381. 13:51okay
  382. 13:53did you talk at all about
  383. 13:56chandler's medical concerns at that time
  384. 13:59yes so he had mentioned that um because
  385. 14:02of his concussion
  386. 14:04he it wasn't clear if he had the cat
  387. 14:06scan or was scheduled for the cat scan
  388. 14:08but that there was going to be a large
  389. 14:11deductible with that
  390. 14:14um and then i i made the comments and i
  391. 14:17don't know if this will make sense i
  392. 14:18made the comment well you'll be getting
  393. 14:20that large paycheck from american family
  394. 14:22so not exactly what you wanted to go to
  395. 14:25but at least you have those resources
  396. 14:28and so we had been told that chandler
  397. 14:30had a roughly a six-month position with
  398. 14:33american family that progressed from an
  399. 14:34internship to a paid position but he
  400. 14:37hadn't been getting paid and that he was
  401. 14:39going to be getting this large check
  402. 14:41and then he made the comment that that
  403. 14:44something along the lines that didn't
  404. 14:46work out or that's not going to happen
  405. 14:50and i was really uncomfortable with
  406. 14:52things that were being said prior to
  407. 14:54that but that was i remember like
  408. 14:56thinking
  409. 14:57i just need him to leave now because
  410. 14:59nothing this i don't believe anything he
  411. 15:01said
  412. 15:02so
  413. 15:02[Music]
  414. 15:06at any point that evening were you able
  415. 15:08to observe chandler's feet oh
  416. 15:11specifically his big toe his big toe he
  417. 15:14had asked and this is
  418. 15:15um towards the end of the evening when
  419. 15:17he was there that um
  420. 15:19he had hurt cut there was a cut on his
  421. 15:22toe
  422. 15:23from some broken glass of the from the
  423. 15:25fireplace he said that the dogs they
  424. 15:28were playing ball downstairs and the dog
  425. 15:30ran in and broke the fireplace glass and
  426. 15:32so he wanted me to look at his toes so
  427. 15:34he took off his shoe and sock and
  428. 15:37sort of bent over and was showing me the
  429. 15:39bottom of his foot the bottom of his toe
  430. 15:41and
  431. 15:42so i mean there was a small
  432. 15:44cut
  433. 15:45there
  434. 15:46how big would you say that comes i don't
  435. 15:48know small was a
  436. 15:50more than just a puncture but probably
  437. 15:51like less than an eighth of an inch
  438. 15:53little round
  439. 15:54area um
  440. 15:56it wasn't yes
  441. 15:58all right and you had talked to them
  442. 16:00about the cat scan
  443. 16:02and you said you work at the medical
  444. 16:03school what's your job so i'm a
  445. 16:05researcher so i'm also my background on
  446. 16:07physical therapist but i haven't
  447. 16:09practiced clinically for a couple
  448. 16:10decades so
  449. 16:12how was chandler's movement time during
  450. 16:14the evening at your house fine i know
  451. 16:16there's no um objection
  452. 16:21can we approach
  453. 16:22okay
  454. 16:27i'm gonna rephrase the question slightly
  455. 16:29could you describe um how chandler moved
  456. 16:33the evening he was at your house on july
  457. 16:357th of 2021
  458. 16:37so i did not
  459. 16:39so as an example when he asked me to
  460. 16:42look at his foot he was seated in a
  461. 16:45chair
  462. 16:45he bent fully forward pulled his foot up
  463. 16:48turned his head so we could both look at
  464. 16:50the bottom of his foot i
  465. 16:53i didn't see any restrictions in his
  466. 16:56motion during that which
  467. 16:58it's full spine motion for him to do i
  468. 17:02do not recall any
  469. 17:04restrictions in his movement or
  470. 17:07at any other time in the evening okay
  471. 17:10[Music]
  472. 17:15no further questions cross-examination
  473. 17:18yes thank you
  474. 17:19good morning ms esto good morning
  475. 17:21um so i'm gonna sit here just for the
  476. 17:23mic situation can you hear me just fine
  477. 17:26perfect thank you
  478. 17:27um a couple questions for you
  479. 17:29how long would you say that you've known
  480. 17:30brett and crystal alderson
  481. 17:32i think
  482. 17:34i think 25 years i believe it was when
  483. 17:35mitch
  484. 17:37i think it was after mitch was born that
  485. 17:40we met him through another neighbor
  486. 17:43okay
  487. 17:44and in that time i'm gonna assume that
  488. 17:47you had a lot of one-on-one time with
  489. 17:50krista
  490. 17:52uh yes i mean
  491. 17:54yes
  492. 17:55krista and bart i mean we did
  493. 17:57a lot with them as a couple so as a
  494. 18:00couple you hung out a lot yes you went
  495. 18:02to dinner
  496. 18:04and
  497. 18:05how often would you say that you had a
  498. 18:07one-on-one time with
  499. 18:09chandler
  500. 18:11oh just one-on-one um let me think about
  501. 18:14that
  502. 18:15i know like when we would stop over at
  503. 18:17their home
  504. 18:19um
  505. 18:20krista would want you know during kovid
  506. 18:23chandler to come out say hi
  507. 18:25um catch us up on what was new in this
  508. 18:27life but i think they were typically
  509. 18:30always
  510. 18:32martin crystal were always there um
  511. 18:34sorry i'm just going back before coved
  512. 18:37yeah i think as we hung out
  513. 18:39you know like they were we were together
  514. 18:41over thanksgiving i would chat with
  515. 18:44chas then
  516. 18:46but there were other people in the room
  517. 18:47so
  518. 18:48yeah i can't think of a time where it
  519. 18:49was just me and him in that room so this
  520. 18:52was probably the first time that you did
  521. 18:54have that kind of interaction with
  522. 18:56chandler yes
  523. 18:57and would you say the same thing about
  524. 18:59interactions with mitchell
  525. 19:03so yeah yes i mean so you never really
  526. 19:05had one-on-one interaction oh that's
  527. 19:07what i'm sorry yes that's right no that
  528. 19:08was my fault
  529. 19:09um
  530. 19:11and as far as the
  531. 19:12small cut on the toe did you notice
  532. 19:15anything
  533. 19:16unusual about it the way that she
  534. 19:18described it was it was just a small cut
  535. 19:21i mean yeah look
  536. 19:22yes i mean it wasn't i was looking for
  537. 19:25you know chaz was concerned about signs
  538. 19:27of infection
  539. 19:28um anything like that so i was looking
  540. 19:31for redness oozing it was
  541. 19:33um it you know i said if it continued to
  542. 19:36be problematic he could go and get it
  543. 19:38checked out but i didn't notice anything
  544. 19:41other than he had
  545. 19:43bigger than a puncture wound on the
  546. 19:44bottom of his toe okay
  547. 19:47and i'm going to assume you didn't
  548. 19:49notice any other types of cuts or
  549. 19:50anything that would have been concerning
  550. 19:52to you i no i didn't i just looked at
  551. 19:54the bottom of his foot
  552. 19:56um you also testified about
  553. 19:59chandler working at american family
  554. 20:01insurance yes that information was
  555. 20:04provided to you by krista correct
  556. 20:07no um i think the first time i heard of
  557. 20:11the company
  558. 20:12was when bart krista chas and my husband
  559. 20:16and i were standing outside and they had
  560. 20:18talked about he had been done an
  561. 20:19internship and had gotten a paid
  562. 20:22position but they were trying to get the
  563. 20:24the um payment set up
  564. 20:26and
  565. 20:27someone asked who was the company and so
  566. 20:30they that's what was said american
  567. 20:32family
  568. 20:33so i think that's the first time i heard
  569. 20:35it it was all of us together and i don't
  570. 20:37remember who actually said was american
  571. 20:40family okay and was that the first time
  572. 20:42that you heard of this job
  573. 20:44yes i had heard that he had been doing
  574. 20:45some internships sorry but that it had
  575. 20:47been sort of progressed to a paid
  576. 20:50position
  577. 20:51and then the last time if you will that
  578. 20:53you heard about this job was when you
  579. 20:54and chandler were in your home in the
  580. 20:56kitchen the next time i heard about it
  581. 20:59yes all
  582. 21:00right
  583. 21:02no further questions for you thank you
  584. 21:04can you redirect yes
  585. 21:06he said that there were times that
  586. 21:08krista would have chandler come outside
  587. 21:10and catch you up during covid
  588. 21:12what sort of things did chandler catch
  589. 21:14you up on
  590. 21:15oh um
  591. 21:17you know just it was mainly
  592. 21:20that night when they talked about the
  593. 21:21job
  594. 21:22um
  595. 21:24i know there was a time when he had
  596. 21:25moved back in that we chatted
  597. 21:28um yeah but that there it wasn't
  598. 21:32it wasn't a lot of i guess catching up
  599. 21:34okay all right thank you
  600. 21:36may this witness be released and excused
  601. 21:38yes your honor thank you very much thank
  602. 21:40you have a good remainder of your day
  603. 21:42and the next witness please
  604. 21:46good morning could you please state your
  605. 21:47name for the record and spell both your
  606. 21:49first and last names yes my name is
  607. 21:51kevin lindsmeier first name is spelled
  608. 21:54k-e-v-i-n
  609. 21:56last name of spell l-i-n-s-m-e-i-e-r
  610. 22:03and uh
  611. 22:05mr lindsmeier
  612. 22:07how have you been employed in the past
  613. 22:10um i was employed by the madison police
  614. 22:12department
  615. 22:13as what a
  616. 22:15police officer and a detective
  617. 22:17and how long were you a police officer
  618. 22:19and detective for 31 years
  619. 22:22and
  620. 22:24do you remember roughly when you retired
  621. 22:26on may 3rd 2021
  622. 22:29[Music]
  623. 22:30and where do you live
  624. 22:31i live at 105 oak springs circle in the
  625. 22:35forest wisconsin
  626. 22:37and where is
  627. 22:38105 oak springs circle
  628. 22:41in relation to the halderson home
  629. 22:45it's across the street from my house
  630. 22:47kitty corner a little bit so i mean the
  631. 22:50lots do not line up
  632. 22:53perfect but they're staggered just a
  633. 22:55little bit but we are across the street
  634. 22:56from the halderson residence
  635. 23:02and
  636. 23:03did you know krista and bart holderson
  637. 23:06i did
  638. 23:07how did you know them
  639. 23:09um
  640. 23:10so let's talk about bart first um i've
  641. 23:13known bart since childhood he's from my
  642. 23:16hometown
  643. 23:17um he went to the same high school as i
  644. 23:19we grew up five minutes apart or so
  645. 23:22um
  646. 23:23and then i met bart again
  647. 23:26about five years ago when he moved
  648. 23:27across the street from me
  649. 23:30and then krista i met through bart
  650. 23:33christa was bart's wife and that's when
  651. 23:36i met her okay
  652. 23:39and
  653. 23:40would you just characterize your
  654. 23:41relationship with them as neighbors
  655. 23:44or were you kind of friendly or
  656. 23:46something else
  657. 23:48we're neighbors um we went out to eat
  658. 23:49with them once
  659. 23:51um
  660. 23:52three years ago probably or so i mean we
  661. 23:54visited outside as neighbors would do
  662. 23:57so i would say we're very neighborly
  663. 24:00okay
  664. 24:02and in the first week of july of 2021
  665. 24:06what if any observations did you make
  666. 24:09about the halderson home or lawn
  667. 24:13so
  668. 24:14um
  669. 24:15the first week of july i recall
  670. 24:18talking to my wife about that the
  671. 24:21halderson lawn
  672. 24:23wasn't kept up which was very unusual
  673. 24:25they did a really nice job maintaining
  674. 24:27their lawn
  675. 24:28very good gardeners
  676. 24:31and
  677. 24:32it was obvious that the lawn wasn't
  678. 24:34being cared for so that was the first
  679. 24:36observation
  680. 24:38that we made
  681. 24:42gardening was kind of a hobby for bart
  682. 24:45or at least you thought it was
  683. 24:47they were out regularly working on their
  684. 24:49lawn
  685. 24:50planting you know maintaining their
  686. 24:52plants
  687. 24:53um they were
  688. 24:55that was one of their hobbies you could
  689. 24:56clearly tell they enjoyed being outside
  690. 24:58and working on their lawn and i heard
  691. 25:00that's a little bit competitive on your
  692. 25:02street that everybody takes a lot of
  693. 25:04pride in their landscaping and lawn yes
  694. 25:08[Music]
  695. 25:12as of july 7th or so of 2021 had you
  696. 25:16ever met anybody named chandler
  697. 25:18halderson
  698. 25:20i did okay and when
  699. 25:22when did you meet him
  700. 25:24um
  701. 25:26shortly after bart and christa moved
  702. 25:29into the house
  703. 25:30i know for sure i met chandler and his
  704. 25:32brother and bart and krista
  705. 25:34um then
  706. 25:35i remember that distinctly
  707. 25:38and i'm
  708. 25:39pretty sure there was at least one more
  709. 25:41time in subsequent years that
  710. 25:44i have met chandler
  711. 25:46generally speaking though
  712. 25:48did you socialize with chandler
  713. 25:50no okay
  714. 25:52did chandler come to your home on july
  715. 25:558th of 2021
  716. 25:58yes
  717. 26:00do you have any security cameras of any
  718. 26:02sort at your house i have a ring video
  719. 26:05on the front
  720. 26:06door of my entrance of house
  721. 26:10so do you remember what time did
  722. 26:12chandler come to your home on the 8th
  723. 26:15it was approximately 8 30 a.m
  724. 26:18okay
  725. 26:19and what happened
  726. 26:21so
  727. 26:22the doorbell rang i answered the door um
  728. 26:25i said the chandler through the door
  729. 26:27i'll meet you in the garage
  730. 26:29um
  731. 26:30why'd you do that
  732. 26:31i uh at the time i had a very young
  733. 26:33puppy that needed to be created
  734. 26:36um
  735. 26:37and i you know didn't want to
  736. 26:40have control try to control the puppy
  737. 26:42and talk to chandler at the same time
  738. 26:45so that was the
  739. 26:46reason on why i wanted to talk with him
  740. 26:49in the garage
  741. 26:50did you do anything as you prepared to
  742. 26:53go into the garage to meet chandler
  743. 26:55yes after i created the puppy
  744. 26:58i
  745. 26:59decided that i was going to record
  746. 27:02the
  747. 27:03contact i was going to have with
  748. 27:05chandler so i
  749. 27:07had my phone i activated the recorder
  750. 27:10why'd you do that
  751. 27:13well being a police officer
  752. 27:15um for many years i
  753. 27:18felt or i suspected something wasn't
  754. 27:20right based on my observations from the
  755. 27:22day before
  756. 27:23where i saw
  757. 27:25three squad cars outside the hall or in
  758. 27:28hollerson house for an extended period
  759. 27:29of time
  760. 27:31um
  761. 27:32that's not something we normally see in
  762. 27:34the neighborhood let alone
  763. 27:36for a missing person type case usually
  764. 27:39the officers aren't at the scene for an
  765. 27:41extended period of time so
  766. 27:42i suspect that something wasn't right i
  767. 27:44just didn't know what
  768. 27:46okay
  769. 27:48so you recorded the interaction i did
  770. 27:52and that just to be clear that's just an
  771. 27:54audio only
  772. 27:55recording that is correct okay
  773. 28:02[Music]
  774. 28:03mr lindsmeier i am going to
  775. 28:06show you what has been marked as

  783. 28:32enforcement with your ring video footage
  784. 28:34of chandler
  785. 28:36i did okay and you provided a true and
  786. 28:38accurate copy i did
  787. 28:40at this point i would move exhibit 45
  788. 28:42into evidence any objection you're

  799. 30:34green in color and
  800. 30:36during the course of this investigation
  801. 30:38did you provide law enforcement a true
  802. 30:40and accurate copy of the audio you
  803. 30:43recorded in the garage between you and
  804. 30:45chandler halderson yes
  805. 30:48i would move exhibit 46 into evidence at
  806. 30:50this time any objection other than any

  809. 31:05the court record benefit
  810. 31:08thank you
  811. 31:11[Music]
  812. 31:20so the ring doorbell interaction
  813. 31:21occurred first
  814. 31:23yes okay
  815. 31:24so we are going to publish exhibit 45 at
  816. 31:27this time
  817. 31:42uh

  986. 40:07don't know if i've met either of you
  987. 40:09since
  988. 40:10yeah it's been
  989. 40:12it's been a while yeah
  990. 40:14i can't even remember moving all the
  991. 40:16boxes in here
  992. 40:18yeah actually how long have you been
  993. 40:20over there for five years since i
  994. 40:22graduated high school and we moved
  995. 40:25just the summer after so what's weird is
  996. 40:28that i didn't i didn't know this until
  997. 40:29after you moved over here but
  998. 40:31um you used to live up off of west
  999. 40:33mohawk trail yeah we did too and i had
  1000. 40:36no idea i mean
1001. 40:38and then we lived at 933 west mohawk
1002. 40:41trail and then we moved to mohican pass
1003. 40:43up on top of the hill oh that's where my
1004. 40:46best friend was live what was this name
  1005. 40:48uh napoleon hoffman yeah
  1006. 40:54[Music]
1007. 40:59so that's what your parents told me that
1008. 41:01you moved away from that area and moved
  1009. 41:03to plymouth
1010. 41:04and then move back here then right
  1011. 41:07but um
  1012. 41:08i don't even know where i don't know
1013. 41:09where your house was off of mohawk
  1014. 41:12but um
1015. 41:15we looked close and i had no idea you
1016. 41:17know that i remember your dad was a cub
  1017. 41:20skull i don't think i ever taught him
1018. 41:21because he was younger than me but i
  1019. 41:23remember
1020. 41:24your dad and your old your uncle is cub
  1021. 41:26scouts yeah yeah that's all i remember i
1022. 41:29don't remember him much you know much
1023. 41:31else i know i never talked to that in
1024. 41:33high school he was three years younger
1025. 41:35but um and his brother was older so i
1026. 41:37don't think i ever talked to him
  1027. 41:39but uh
1028. 41:40it's just how weird it was a small world
1029. 41:42and then your mom went to school with my
  1030. 41:43wife
1031. 41:45it's like what small world that is so
  1032. 41:48it's crazy
  1033. 41:50so
  1034. 41:51um
  1035. 41:53okay um
1036. 41:55call me though if you need any anything
  1037. 41:57appreciated okay
1038. 41:58okay if you could think of anything
1039. 42:01uh give me a ring or if you find it just
1040. 42:06just from my law enforcement background
1041. 42:09the best thing you can be doing is being
1042. 42:11in constant contact with the detective
1043. 42:14that's assigned to the case
  1044. 42:16if i was you
  1045. 42:18i would
1046. 42:19be lighting this phone up what's going
  1047. 42:21on
  1048. 42:22where are things at
1049. 42:24you know just being in constant contact
  1050. 42:26um
  1051. 42:27they're gonna
1052. 42:29i if they're doing their job the way i
1053. 42:31would be doing it they already reached
1054. 42:33out wherever the sawyer lake is
1055. 42:35they would have had the cops check you
1056. 42:37know check in the area
1057. 42:39um did you give them the address or the
  1058. 42:41cabin
  1059. 42:42okay i can assure you that they're doing
1060. 42:45what they can on their end but
1061. 42:47i would be calling that couple you know
  1062. 42:50two three times a day
  1063. 42:52saying hey what's going on or
1064. 42:53encouraging the cop to call you
  1065. 42:56two three times a day until
1066. 42:58you know this is figured out um
  1067. 43:02and i didn't know your parents real well
  1068. 43:04i'm i i really haven't talked to i knew
1069. 43:06your dad a little bit i would say hi to
  1070. 43:08him and we wave
  1071. 43:10but it's not like we're real close
1072. 43:13because we just weren't you know so
  1073. 43:15um
1074. 43:17but uh that's about all you can really
  1075. 43:19do and
  1076. 43:20um
1077. 43:23i'm not a big social media person at all
1078. 43:26don't know much about it but the
1079. 43:28appearance big in social media
  1080. 43:31it's
  1081. 43:32not helping finding them
  1082. 43:34okay when was your
  1083. 43:37in your appearance workplaces
1084. 43:39have been contacted already yeah okay i
1085. 43:42tried to contact my dad's but his place
1086. 43:44is so locked down it's hard to even talk
  1087. 43:46to a real person
1088. 43:48and the officers know where your parents
1089. 43:50were yeah okay so they're doing their
1090. 43:52trust me they're doing what their jobs
1091. 43:54are so that should all be covered and
1092. 43:56then i would you know just stay in
  1093. 43:58contact with the cops they're gonna
1094. 44:00probably ask for more information if
1095. 44:01they have questions from you answer the
  1096. 44:03questions
  1097. 44:04be in
1098. 44:05whatever you can do of assistance
  1099. 44:14okay that's good that's really good um
1100. 44:17does krista have any relatives around
  1101. 44:19here
  1102. 44:22just my dad
  1103. 44:23and i contacted
1104. 44:27his side aunt and uncle his brother
  1105. 44:31his nieces
  1106. 44:32okay god can't
  1107. 44:34know all of my grandparents i i'm pretty
1108. 44:36sure they're in the loop not too but
  1109. 44:38they haven't heard anything sure
  1110. 44:40so
  1111. 44:41okay
  1112. 44:43um
1113. 44:44you know just work with the detective as
1114. 44:46much as possible do you know who the
  1115. 44:48detective has the sign yeah it's on a
  1116. 44:51card in my
  1117. 44:53hand
1118. 44:54once you call and ask them are you the
1119. 44:56detective assigned or do you mind if i
  1120. 44:58continue calling you
  1121. 45:00for updates because what's gonna happen
  1122. 45:02is
  1123. 45:05yeah okay so
1124. 45:08not all three people are going to be
1125. 45:10assigned the case one person gets
  1126. 45:12assigned the case
1127. 45:14because the other two most the time
  1128. 45:16their control officers are
1129. 45:18detectives they have other pieces they
1130. 45:20have to work on but one person will be
1131. 45:22assigned a piece find out who that one
  1132. 45:24person is
  1133. 45:25and that's who you're going to call
  1134. 45:27that's who you're going to communicate
1135. 45:28with you don't want to communicate with
  1136. 45:30three different people because you're
1137. 45:31gonna get there on their own because you
  1138. 45:33know these three people don't
1139. 45:34communicate with each other because
1140. 45:36they're all doing their own thing you
  1141. 45:37need that one person that's a head of
  1142. 45:38atheist so
  1143. 45:40that's who you
1144. 45:41want to stay in contact with but um
  1145. 45:44there's
1146. 45:58glad you did i'm really glad you did
  1147. 46:00yeah
1148. 46:01i'm really glad you did um
1149. 46:06did the police ask you do they have
  1150. 46:07passports
  1151. 46:09do they
1152. 46:10don't know if they have
  1153. 46:11passports with them i can't get in our
  1154. 46:14safe i don't have the codes for safes
1155. 46:16okay and that's where we keep that
  1156. 46:18business okay
  1157. 46:19that's the stuff that they're gonna
  1158. 46:21the cops have a way of
1159. 46:25checking to see if they got on airplanes
1160. 46:28there's a way of them doing that
  1161. 46:30so there's there's things they can be
  1162. 46:33doing
1163. 46:34on their end that i'm sure they are
  1164. 46:36because that's what you know that's what
  1165. 46:37they do so
  1166. 46:39okay
  1167. 46:40okay um
1168. 46:43keep me in mind though if there's
1169. 46:44anything i could be doing to help all
1170. 46:46especially with the dogs just keep me in
1171. 46:47mind with that we're not we have no
  1172. 46:49plans with this puppy
1173. 46:51we have no plans so later this year so
1174. 46:53we're not going anywhere with the puppy
  1175. 46:56yet okay i appreciate it
1176. 46:58i'll drop your text once my wife looks
1177. 47:00at the ring okay thank you

1186. 47:25talked to before following up with that
1187. 47:28i would ask everyone not in the jury box
1188. 47:30to lower their masks for a brief count

  1200. 47:54wearing a
  1201. 47:55a blue
1202. 47:56shirt dark tie and a dark blazer jacket
1203. 48:01and i know that audio was kind of long
1204. 48:03but at the beginning the defendant asked
1205. 48:05two questions if you had cameras and
  1206. 48:08what they pointed to
1207. 48:10is that fair yes okay

1382. 56:55a little over four years i think
  1383. 56:57approximately
1384. 56:58sure um just going to ask you some
1385. 57:00questions first about your neighborhood
1386. 57:01okay oh sure um what kind of
1387. 57:03neighborhood is it is it a residential
1388. 57:05is it out in the country tell me about
  1389. 57:06that it's a residential neighborhood
  1390. 57:08okay um on a little pond
1391. 57:11sure do you live on the pond yes okay
1392. 57:14what kind of things do people do on the
  1393. 57:15pond
1394. 57:17right now they're ice fishing or paddle
  1395. 57:20boating or canoeing or
1396. 57:24probably about it were there fish in the
  1397. 57:26pond
1398. 57:27oh yeah definitely fishing okay yeah uh
1399. 57:30did you know a couple by the name of
  1400. 57:32bart and krista halderson
1401. 57:33yes how did you know them
  1402. 57:36they were my next-door neighbors
1403. 57:39to the west of me okay
  1404. 57:42um
  1405. 57:43and they moved in
1406. 57:46i think approximately six months prior
  1407. 57:48to
  1408. 57:49my family moving in
  1409. 57:50okay
1410. 57:51and uh when i when you say you knew them
1411. 57:53how well did you know them
  1412. 57:55um well i
  1413. 57:57knew bart
1414. 57:59better than krista crystal was a little
  1415. 58:01more reserved but um
1416. 58:04you know definitely talked a little bit
1417. 58:06more i always saw him outside throwing
1418. 58:07the frisbee for his dogs and fishing and
1419. 58:11you know my my husband and bart would
1420. 58:13text sometimes or talk and so
1421. 58:17you know i knew him as as well you know
1422. 58:19neighborly sure um i think you alluded
1423. 58:22to some of it bart would be out some
1424. 58:24fishing or being in the yard with the
1425. 58:25dogs what type of is that the extent of
1426. 58:27it are there other things you'd see the
  1427. 58:28haldersons outside doing
  1428. 58:30uh
  1429. 58:31sometimes they would have a bonfire
  1430. 58:33okay
  1431. 58:34um
1432. 58:36they did a lot of lawn work they really
  1433. 58:38made their yard
  1434. 58:41like very beautiful
1435. 58:42they did a lot of different things to it
1436. 58:44so they they always were doing a lot of
  1437. 58:46yard work
1438. 58:48sure and your neighborhood do people
1439. 58:49take care of their lawns
  1440. 58:51yes yes it's very uh
1441. 58:54everybody is very particular about their
  1442. 58:56their lawns
1443. 58:58uh does it at times feel like maybe
  1444. 58:59there's a little bit of a competition
  1445. 59:00between people and who doesn't
1446. 59:02sure yeah definitely if you if you're
1447. 59:04behind you better get um
1448. 59:07you better get your yard mowed or your
  1449. 59:10leaves picked up
1450. 59:11okay where do you rank in this lawn
  1451. 59:13contest my husband's pretty uh i mean i
1452. 59:16don't rank too high okay personally but
  1453. 59:19my husband
  1454. 59:21definitely is
  1455. 59:23you know like
1456. 59:24for example him and bart kind of had a
1457. 59:26thing where like firewood moe and then
1458. 59:29my husband would be like oh you know
1459. 59:31art mode i better mow or vice versa that
  1460. 59:33would happen
1461. 59:35sounds good did you know the halderson
1462. 59:37boys at all their children chandler and
  1463. 59:39mitchell
  1464. 59:41no i mean i had seen them
1465. 59:44i had not seen mitch as much as i had
  1466. 59:46seen
1467. 59:47chandler but i had only interacted with
1468. 59:50or i have only interacted with chandler
  1469. 59:54twice
1470. 59:55since they lived there okay
1471. 59:58um in early july of last year so after
1472. 1:00:02the fourth of july weekend maybe going
1473. 1:00:03into the seventh day that time period um
1474. 1:00:07at some point did chandler come over to
  1475. 1:00:09your house
  1476. 1:00:10he did okay
1477. 1:00:12now do you have any security cameras at
  1478. 1:00:13your house
1479. 1:00:15we do and uh were those full functioning
1480. 1:00:18and operational the day that chandler
  1481. 1:00:19came over
1482. 1:00:20yes they were okay um at times do you
1483. 1:00:23turn the security cameras off
1484. 1:00:25yes i did why do you turn the security
  1485. 1:00:27cameras off sometimes i turn the
  1486. 1:00:29notification well i didn't turn the
  1487. 1:00:31camera off i turned the notifications
1488. 1:00:33off so that um if there was a
1489. 1:00:35large influx of packages coming and then
1490. 1:00:39my husband wouldn't get like all the
  1491. 1:00:41notifications sure
  1492. 1:00:43he was at work
  1493. 1:00:45yeah
1494. 1:00:45i think that scheme's being pulled on me
  1495. 1:00:47right now
1496. 1:00:50so you had a camera system sometimes you
1497. 1:00:52turn the turn notifications off and and
1498. 1:00:54the footage would maybe go away
1499. 1:00:55eventually uh but chandler came over one
1500. 1:00:57of these days right and did you talk to
1501. 1:01:00him outside or did you invite him inside
1502. 1:01:02i invited him in inside so if your
1503. 1:01:04security camera picked up anything that
1504. 1:01:06they would have just been that brief
  1505. 1:01:07ring of the doorbell
1506. 1:01:09pleasantries and then inviting him
1507. 1:01:10inside yes okay did you provide that
  1508. 1:01:12footage to dane county sheriff's
1509. 1:01:13deputies did your family when asked in
  1510. 1:01:15this case i did okay i'm showing you
1511. 1:01:16what's been marked in this case is
  1512. 1:01:18exhibit number 52
1513. 1:01:20just a feel around that feels like a usb
  1514. 1:01:23drive doesn't it yes and that'd be
  1515. 1:01:24consistent with someone's video footage
1516. 1:01:26the kind of being transferred over for
  1517. 1:01:28court right sure i would imagine so i'll
  1518. 1:01:30move 52 evidence any objection no
1519. 1:01:32objection it is received for the court
  1520. 1:01:34record i'll move 53
  1521. 1:01:36not to be published
  1522. 1:01:39any objection to 53
1523. 1:01:42no it is received and i'll move to
  1524. 1:01:44publish 52. you may have
1525. 1:01:49what's going to be seen you'll be able
1526. 1:01:50to see on the screen in front of you
1527. 1:01:52rather than needing to strain your neck
1528. 1:01:55oh sure okay thank you
1529. 1:01:57i get it thank you
  1530. 1:02:11[Applause]
  1531. 1:02:17all
  1532. 1:02:18[Applause]
1533. 1:02:33you guys okay thank you take care thank
  1534. 1:02:35you bye
  1535. 1:02:41[Applause]
1536. 1:02:45all right so that showed essentially mr
1537. 1:02:46halderson showing up and then him
1538. 1:02:48leaving when your your camera again gets
1539. 1:02:50activated by his movement correct
1540. 1:02:52and you have any reason to doubt that
1541. 1:02:54the time on the bottom there on the date
  1542. 1:02:55of july 8th around 8 30 to 8 36 that
1543. 1:02:58sound about right to you
  1544. 1:03:00uh yes okay i
1545. 1:03:02i thought he came over
1546. 1:03:04at 808 and we left 18 minutes later sure
  1547. 1:03:08about a 18 to 20 minute conversation yes
1548. 1:03:11um nothing that was inside was recorded
1549. 1:03:13of course okay um let me ask you some
  1550. 1:03:16questions sure though um
1551. 1:03:19mr halderson first came in uh what did
  1552. 1:03:21he tell you
1553. 1:03:22i'm sorry could you rape you yeah what
1554. 1:03:23did he tell you was going on when he
1555. 1:03:25first came in your home
  1556. 1:03:27uh well
1557. 1:03:28he didn't he he just came in he just he
  1558. 1:03:31took his shoes off and i
  1559. 1:03:33and you know i said
  1560. 1:03:35to him i'm not very tech savvy it's
1561. 1:03:37gonna take me a minute you know to pull
1562. 1:03:39up the cameras and see what we have and
  1563. 1:03:41then
  1564. 1:03:42and
1565. 1:03:42he came in he sat down
1566. 1:03:46on the floor against uh one of our like
  1567. 1:03:49oversized chairs
1568. 1:03:50and then um you know my dog went up to
1569. 1:03:53him and i sat next to my dog
1570. 1:03:56and i proceeded to look at the footage
  1571. 1:03:59he
1572. 1:04:00i don't recall him saying anything at
1573. 1:04:03at that time sure um did he talk about
1574. 1:04:06anything in your house for that yes tell
1575. 1:04:08me about that well i asked him some
  1576. 1:04:10questions so um so
1577. 1:04:13i think i believe while i was looking up
  1578. 1:04:15some of the footage
  1579. 1:04:17you know i

1581. 1:04:20is because it was on the tv which is
1582. 1:04:22probably irrelevant but and then you
1583. 1:04:24know that was just a brief conversation
1584. 1:04:26and then i found the footage and i said
  1585. 1:04:29you know unfortunately
1586. 1:04:31the camera was off from six two

  1623. 1:05:57said oh i'm sure you know they'll get a
  1624. 1:06:00subpoena to get that
  1625. 1:06:02that computer and he's like well they'll

1638. 1:06:30you know no they don't use debit cards
1639. 1:06:32when they go up north they always take
  1640. 1:06:34cash because they don't have
  1641. 1:06:36any sliders
  1642. 1:06:38and i said okay and then
1643. 1:06:41sliders and meaning though like a credit
1644. 1:06:43you refer to it as sliders but yeah i
  1645. 1:06:46took that to mean
