- 0:27And the title of the sermon is: What
- 0:29kind of virgin are you? Let's read the
- 0:32text. It is extensive, but I think even
- 0:35today it might be a short sermon,
- 0:41because although it is a long text, the
- 0:43teaching is very clear and very simple.
- 0:46The text is Matthew, chapter 25, verses
- 0:491 through 13. Matthew chapter 25,
- 0:53verses 1 through 13. And this is what
- 0:57the word of God says. Then the kingdom
- 1:01of heaven will be like ten virgins who
- 1:03took their lamps and went out to meet
- 1:05the bridegroom. Five of them were
- 1:10foolish and five were prudent. For the
- 1:14foolish, when taking their lamps, took
- 1:16no oil with them. But the prudent took
- 1:21oil in jars along with their lamps. As
- 1:24the bridegroom was delayed, they all
- 1:26became drowsy and fell asleep. But at
- 1:30midnight there was a cry: "Here is the
- 1:32bridegroom!""Come out to meet him."
- 1:37Then all those virgins arose and
- 1:39trimmed their lamps. And the foolish
- 1:43said to the prudent, "Give us some of
- 1:44your oil, for our lamps are going out."
- 1:50But the prudent answered, saying, "No,
- 1:52there may not be enough for us and for
- 1:53you. Go instead to those who sell and
- 1:58buy for yourselves." And while they
- 2:03were going to buy, the bridegroom came,
- 2:04and those who were ready went in with
- 2:06him to the wedding feast, and the door
- 2:08was shut. Afterward the other virgins
- 2:13also came, saying, "Lord, Lord, open to
- 2:16us." But he answered and said, "Truly I
- 2:20tell you, I do not know you.""Watch
- 2:25therefore, for you know neither the day
- 2:27nor the hour." Brothers, I am going to
- 2:31pray for a minute asking for God's
- 2:33guidance for his word. Father, we ask
- 2:36you, Lord, to guide the preaching of
- 2:38this moment. Lord, I am weak and
- 2:44limited, but I am someone who trusts
- 2:46that you use the weak and limited. Lord
- 2:53, I am not here to show my expository
- 2:55talent, for I do not have it, but I am
- 2:57here as someone who depends on you to
- 2:58use me so that your church may be
- 3:00edified. And I fully trust that your
- 3:08Holy Spirit can use me as an instrument
- 3:11so that your church today, Lord, may
- 3:13learn, be confronted, be alerted, and
- 3:15look, Lord, to heaven, awaiting the
- 3:17coming of its Lord. Father, use me, use
- 3:24me, Lord, to be a faithful messenger of
- 3:27your word. Do not let me stray to the
- 3:30right or to the left. Do not let me add
- 3:34or take away, simply teach what is here
- 3:36so that your church learns what Jesus
- 3:38wanted to teach with these words. And
- 3:43this is what I ask of you in the name
- 3:44of Jesus. Amen. Amen and amen. Today I
- 3:50chose this parable for a reason. I
- 3:55think it is one of the most mistaught
- 3:57parables of all time. For example, if I
- 4:04were to ask you, "How many have heard
- 4:06that the lamps and oil relate to the
- 4:08Holy Spirit?" Many would say, "Me, and
- 4:13you have to be filled with the Holy
- 4:15Spirit, you have to have oil in your
- 4:16lamps." Very well. And how many? And
- 4:21this is what I find most concerning
- 4:23because that is not what the parable is
- 4:25about, yet many teach it that way. How
- 4:30many have ever heard that the 10
- 4:31virgins represent the church and that
- 4:33those five are the ones who will be
- 4:34lost within the church? People who
- 4:41belong to the church, but because they
- 4:43are not watching, they will be lost,
- 4:44because they won't be watching when
- 4:46Jesus comes. That has been taught,
- 4:50especially in contexts where they
- 4:52usually warn you, "You could be lost if
- 4:54you are not careful. You could be lost
- 4:56if you are not careful. You could be
- 4:58lost if you are not careful." And the
- 5:00parable isn't saying, "Relax, you won't
- 5:02be lost," either. But I believe those
- 5:06two points are taught often and they
- 5:07are not in the parable, they just
- 5:09aren't. One of the things I explained
- 5:13when we did the workshop on
- 5:15understanding scripture regarding
- 5:16parables, which for example, became
- 5:18very clear this Sunday, many told me, "
- 5:20I had never understood that text that
- 5:22way." But when I explained it, they saw
- 5:26it clearly. Why? All I did was read the
- 5:30previous chapter so they would
- 5:32understand that the text had a lot to
- 5:33do with what Jesus had been saying for
- 5:35an entire chapter. The great error
- 5:39regarding parables is the following.
- 5:43Taking parables and having my mind
- 5:44start to associate concepts with
- 5:46everything I have read in the Bible.
- 5:53Since in the Bible, oil was often used
- 5:55to anoint kings, prophets, and priests,
- 5:57then oil must mean the anointing. But
- 6:03that is not always the case, because,
- 6:07for example, in the New Testament, oil
- 6:09appears for anointing the sick and it
- 6:11has nothing to do with the anointing of
- 6:14oil for prophets, kings, and offices in
- 6:16the Old Testament. Sometimes oil can
- 6:20represent the Holy Spirit in some
- 6:22prophetic texts. Yes, but not always.
- 6:27Not always. How is the church
- 6:31represented in the Bible? Ah, always as
- 6:34sheep, right? As a bride as well. In
- 6:40this case, they could be virgins, but
- 6:42who is going to marry the bridegroom?
- 6:46Who marries the bridegroom? The bride,
- 6:49right? But in this case, the church is
- 6:51the bride. The bride doesn't even
- 6:54appear. The church is a group of
- 6:56virgins. So, there are things that
- 7:00sometimes mean something, but they
- 7:02don't always mean the same thing,
- 7:03because the bride doesn't even appear
- 7:05in this passage, but the church does
- 7:11appear in this passage. So, we have to
- 7:14be careful. For me, I will always say
- 7:18it, and every time I preach a parable,
- 7:20there are two things I like to do so I
- 7:22don't get it wrong. Because the mistake
- 7:26with parables is intuition, right?
- 7:30Because the oil could represent this,
- 7:32the groom could represent this, the
- 7:34wedding could represent this, but that
- 7:36can lead to a catastrophic error.
- 7:42Another very serious mistake is that we
- 7:44sometimes want to find the meaning of
- 7:46every detail of the parable. And
- 7:50sometimes Jesus is teaching something
- 7:51and says, "I don't want you to think
- 7:53about the virgins 'clothes or their
- 7:55lamps. I want you to think about the
- 7:58fact that the groom is coming suddenly,
- 8:00that you have to be watching." There is
- 8:04a clear teaching, and sometimes we
- 8:06spend more time looking for the meaning
- 8:08of details that aren't explained and we
- 8:09lose sight of the parable's teaching.
- 8:14Two things we have to do when we study
- 8:16parables. The first, ask. Always ask,
- 8:21what is Jesus addressing? Jesus never
- 8:26tells a parable out of nowhere. He
- 8:29always tells a parable in the middle of
- 8:31a topic he is already addressing. This
- 8:34Sunday we were able to see it. Jesus is
- 8:37addressing eternal life. The entire
- 8:39previous chapter was like that. The
- 8:40young man, "How will I inherit eternal
- 8:42life?" The others, none; it's easier
- 8:44for a rich man to...it's easier for a
- 8:46camel to go through the eye of a needle
- 8:48than for a rich man to be saved. Then,
- 8:51how can anyone be saved? For men it is
- 8:53impossible, but for God it is possible.
- 8:55Then Peter arrives and says, "What
- 8:57about us, we have left everything.""
- 8:58What will we receive?" Everything was
- 9:00about eternal life. Eternal life,
- 9:02salvation, what is to come. And that is
- 9:04when Jesus tells a parable. What is
- 9:09Jesus answering in this teaching? He is
- 9:12talking about the Holy Spirit with his
- 9:14disciples in the previous chapter. He
- 9:17is dedicated in those chapters that
- 9:19surround the parable to talking about
- 9:20the Holy Spirit, so that is the central
- 9:22theme for the lamps, right? So, I first
- 9:26have to ask, what is Jesus addressing?
- 9:30What is Jesus teaching? What is Jesus
- 9:32responding to? And secondly, the
- 9:35context, church, for the Lord's sake,
- 9:37context; a text out of its context only
- 9:40creates a pretext. Look, today I'm
- 9:46going to spend 10 minutes on this text
- 9:48and 40 minutes on all the texts
- 9:49surrounding it. After those 40 minutes,
- 9:53looking at all the surrounding texts,
- 9:55we'll spend 10 minutes on that text and
- 9:57you'll say, "Ah, it’s still talking
- 9:58about the same thing he talked about in
- 10:00the two previous chapters and the two
- 10:02following ones, because he's been
- 10:03talking about one thing for four
- 10:05chapters.""You'll see how simple it is
- 10:07and say,' Ah, look, it was easy after
- 10:09all. '""The Bible is not difficult. The
- 10:12thing is, the Bible is not for the lazy
- 10:14. The Bible is not for taking and
- 10:16saying,' What do you think? What do you
- 10:18interpret? What does the Lord tell you?
- 10:20'" No, the Bible is for studying. The
- 10:22Bible is meditated upon. The Bible is a
- 10:25book. The Bible is not loose verses. So
- 10:30, we need to understand this. But
- 10:33before we go to those chapters, those
- 10:34surrounding texts, we are going to
- 10:36explain a bit about what is happening
- 10:38here. When Jesus speaks in parables, he
- 10:41uses scenes and elements that are
- 10:43common to the people there. Brother,
- 10:46that wedding has nothing to do with our
- 10:48weddings. In our weddings, there is no
- 10:51court of virgins waiting for the groom.
- 10:55In our weddings, no one arrives with
- 10:57lit lamps. In our weddings, there is no
- 11:01one waiting for the groom to settle
- 11:02something until midnight. For starters,
- 11:06look at the differences between their
- 11:08weddings and our weddings. Ours don't
- 11:10have a dowry. There, there was a thing
- 11:13called a dowry. Here, no one got
- 11:15married for free. There was an exchange
- 11:17involved. You married someone, but it
- 11:19cost something or you took something
- 11:21with you. In these weddings, for
- 11:23example, do you know how long they
- 11:25lasted? The shortest could be 3 to 4
- 11:29days. There were weddings that extended
- 11:32up to two weeks if the family had
- 11:33resources. That was a party. That was a
- 11:36party. Two weeks eating and celebrating
- 11:40the union of the family. Two weeks.
- 11:46Sometimes ours last a few hours and
- 11:48they are already expensive. Imagine
- 11:51celebrating for two weeks, feeding many
- 11:53people. For us, some people even take
- 11:57out mortgages to get married for 3
- 11:59hours. Those were weeks. How could they
- 12:03do it? Obviously, they counted on the
- 12:05help of the people. Here sometimes rich
- 12:08families paid for everything, but often
- 12:10friends would contribute. I’ll bring
- 12:14two lambs, I’ll bring a cow, I’ll
- 12:16bring, I don't know, but that's how it
- 12:18was, they all helped each other. But
- 12:22let's analyze this text a bit to
- 12:24understand what a wedding was like. Yes
- 12:27, so we see some clear characters, two
- 12:29characters, a group of 10 virgins and a
- 12:31groom. Let's quickly go to the
- 12:36character we all know who he is. The
- 12:40groom. Who is the groom? Jesus, that's
- 12:45clear, he is the groom. The 10 virgins
- 12:51will be the issue of whether they are
- 12:53the church or if five wise virgins are
- 12:55the church and five foolish virgins are
- 12:57the ungodly who are not the church.
- 13:01That will be the most fundamental part.
- 13:04But let's understand what the virgins
- 13:06were doing there. Look, when there was
- 13:09a wedding back then, there was a
- 13:11tradition. The groom would go talk to
- 13:16the bride's family, mainly the bride's
- 13:17father and older brothers, and they
- 13:19would reach an agreement on what we
- 13:21have called the dowry and. It was done
- 13:25right before the wedding, a while
- 13:27before, a few hours before: the groom
- 13:29would go and talk. Hey, well, I’m
- 13:32going to marry your daughter. And they
- 13:35would reach an agreement on what would
- 13:37be exchanged for that matrimonial union
- 13:38. What would happen? Those meetings
- 13:43could last. Sometimes you would arrive
- 13:45and reach an agreement very quickly. I
- 13:47want this, this, and this. We’re
- 13:49getting married, fine, deal, deal. But
- 13:51sometimes not. Sometimes the meetings
- 13:54lasted a long time, an agreement wasn't
- 13:56reached that quickly, and there was a
- 13:58court of virgins waiting outside. Why?
- 14:03Because the groom would go straight
- 14:04from the meeting to the wedding area.
- 14:07And do you know who was waiting in the
- 14:08wedding area? The bride. Because at
- 14:12those weddings, the one who was
- 14:14expected was the groom. At those
- 14:17weddings, the protagonist was the groom
- 14:19. Not like ours, where the one who
- 14:22arrives late is the bride and on top of
- 14:24that they give her to you without a
- 14:25dowry, they give her to you for free
- 14:29and she arrives late. It wasn't like
- 14:32that there. So, the virgins were a
- 14:36group of people who were going to exalt
- 14:38the arrival of the groom. Back then,
- 14:44when you think about a wedding today,
- 14:45what is the moment when the whole room
- 14:47stands up?
- 14:50It’s very curious. First comes a
- 14:53little girl with petals. Nobody pays
- 14:55attention to the girl. The girl is
- 14:57usually distracted. The mother goes
- 14:59behind, please, throw them. She gets
- 15:01tired, she throws the whole basket. I
- 15:03vote for them to stop including
- 15:05children in weddings. They look nice in
- 15:07photos, but they're a lot of work. Some
- 15:10have run off with the rings, some have
- 15:12even eaten the petals. Stop using
- 15:14children. Don't use children. No, the
- 15:17kids don't even know there’s a
- 15:18wedding. Stop trying. Nowadays people
- 15:21are modernizing so much that I've even
- 15:23seen dogs come in with the ring on
- 15:25their back. But when the flower girl
- 15:28comes in, people go, "Oh, how cute,"
- 15:29and then pay no attention. Then the
- 15:32groom enters with his mother. Who pays
- 15:33attention to the groom? Nobody. Some
- 15:35people have seen the groom arrive and
- 15:37didn't even notice, like, "Oh, he's
- 15:39here." A stranger passing by in black,
- 15:41at that. The groom is the only one who
- 15:43wears the same clothes to his wedding
- 15:44as to his funeral. He doesn't spend on
- 15:48luxuries. Who comes after the groom?
- 15:52Often there's a court of groomsmen,
- 15:54bridesmaids, or whatever they're called
- 15:55, right? But people are like, "How nice
- 15:58, very good," but nothing more. But
- 16:01suddenly a voice says, "The bride is
- 16:02coming, the bride is coming." And
- 16:05people get desperate, they grab their
- 16:07phones, stand up, and there she is,
- 16:09brilliant in her white dress,
- 16:11everything stops, the music plays. That
- 16:14was supposed to be for the groom. The
- 16:17bride was there waiting for the groom.
- 16:19The people were there waiting for the
- 16:20groom. And those virgins with the lamps
- 16:23, they did that because weddings were
- 16:25mainly held in the evening. Why?
- 16:29Because you didn't get the day off for
- 16:30a wedding there. "Oh, I'm taking the
- 16:32day off, I have a wedding." No, people
- 16:34worked there and got married after the
- 16:36workday, in the late afternoon or
- 16:38evening. What did they do with the
- 16:40lamps? When the groom went out and
- 16:45headed to the wedding, that procession
- 16:47of virgins—which wasn't for the
- 16:48groom's benefit, though some have had
- 16:50dirty thoughts reading that—we aren't
- 16:52Muslims waiting for virgins in paradise
- 16:54. It has nothing to do with that. Those
- 17:00women would go five on one side, five
- 17:02on the other, lamp lit, lit like a
- 17:03torch, with the groom in the middle.
- 17:09And people from afar would only see
- 17:11those lamps shining and the groom
- 17:12radiant among them. That’s what the
- 17:17virgins were for: to wait for the groom
- 17:19, to exalt the groom, so the groom
- 17:20would shine, so the groom would stand
- 17:22out. That is what they were for. And
- 17:24many talk about the parable without
- 17:26even knowing that part. That’s why
- 17:29the oil was important, not because the
- 17:31oil was the Holy Spirit, but because
- 17:33back then there were no flashlights.
- 17:36Back then, lamps ran on oil. What
- 17:40happened with the oil? The bridegroom
- 17:42took too long. We don't know why. No
- 17:46agreement was reached. The meeting was
- 17:48delayed and the bridegroom took a long
- 17:50time. The bridegroom didn't show up
- 17:53until midnight. Some wedding, that.
- 17:55Midnight. But what happened with the
- 17:58oil? It started to dim and it started
- 18:01to run out. Because scholars,
- 18:04historians, estimate that the oil was
- 18:06used to soak a little wick that would
- 18:08catch fire, and as long as there was
- 18:10oil, it would burn, but once it dried
- 18:12up, that was it. They said that oil
- 18:16would burn for about 15 minutes. And
- 18:17then, what did they have to do? Dip the
- 18:21wick in oil again, light it again, and
- 18:23so on, constantly. What did some of the
- 18:26virgins do? Some virgins knew these
- 18:28things sometimes take hours, sometimes
- 18:30they don't get resolved quickly.
- 18:33Let’s bring extra oil because if the
- 18:35groom takes longer than 15 minutes, the
- 18:37light goes out and we’ve failed our
- 18:38job. Because that was the only thing
- 18:42expected of the virgins, their oil lamp
- 18:44, the only thing expected of them. So
- 18:48they were cautious, they were prudent,
- 18:50and they brought extra oil. Others,
- 18:53more laid-back, didn’t bring extra
- 18:55oil. They just went with their lamp.
- 18:57They must have thought, "No, this will
- 18:58go quickly. They told us they won't be
- 19:00long." And they were shortsighted, they
- 19:03didn't think things through. And at
- 19:06midnight someone announces, "The
- 19:07bridegroom is coming," and they start
- 19:09to light their lamps. "The prudent ones
- 19:13have enough oil to light them again,
- 19:14but the foolish ones don't. And they
- 19:17ask the prudent ones," Give me some of
- 19:19your oil, give me your oil because the
- 19:20bridegroom is coming and I don't have
- 19:22any. "And the prudent one says," I
- 19:23can't, because we don't know how long
- 19:25it will take to get there if our light
- 19:26goes out along the way. "And I have to
- 19:28do my part. I was only given one task
- 19:31and I have to do it. I mean, it's your
- 19:33problem. I’ll give you a piece of
- 19:35advice: go and buy some. What’s the
- 19:37problem? That they didn't have 24-hour
- 19:39stores like we do. It was midnight,
- 19:41where were you going to find oil? It
- 19:44was something they couldn't do; there
- 19:46was no hope. It was an impossible task.
- 19:51So they went out in desperation. We'll
- 19:53find something, there must be somewhere
- 19:55, we'll knock on a door and ask them to
- 19:56lend us oil. But by the time they went
- 20:00and returned, the bridegroom had
- 20:01already come and shut the door, and
- 20:03they could no longer enter. But when
- 20:07they knock, the bridegroom says a
- 20:09phrase to them; they say an expression,
- 20:11" Lord, Lord, open to us. "Lord, Lord,
- 20:16open to us. Very similar, as we will
- 20:19see, to an expression we hear like,"
- 20:21Not everyone who says to me,' Lord,
- 20:23Lord, 'will enter the kingdom of heaven
- 20:25. "Here again appears the same
- 20:28expression, Lord. Lord, open to us.
- 20:32Lord, Lord, I want to enter the kingdom
- 20:34of heaven. But what does He answer?"
- 20:38Truly I tell you, I do not know you. "
- 20:42Why do I know, and I will break it down
- 20:44later, that it is not the church that
- 20:46is lost? Because the Lord does not say
- 20:50that I have stopped knowing you. The
- 20:53Lord does not say," You have ceased to
- 20:55be mine. "The Lord uses a very clear
- 20:57expression. I do not know you." I never
- 21:00knew you, "appears in other texts. It
- 21:02is not the first time you will have
- 21:04read that expression. I never knew you.
- 21:08And that expression Jesus never uses
- 21:10for His lost church, but for the
- 21:11ungodly, some of whom have even
- 21:13pretended to be the church. They have
- 21:17been able to walk among the church,
- 21:18they have been able to be among the
- 21:20church, but they were never the church.
- 21:22And that is why He tells them," I do
- 21:24not know you. "The word" know "here
- 21:27cannot be taken as the knowing of" I
- 21:29know your name is John, "because God
- 21:31knows everyone. That word from the
- 21:35mouth of God, if you understand it that
- 21:37way, makes no sense. I do not know you.
- 21:40It makes no sense if we understand it
- 21:42as an intellectual knowledge of who a
- 21:44person is, since God knows both the
- 21:46church and the ungodly. But the word"
- 21:50know "in the Bible also refers to
- 21:52intimacy, to knowing in a much more
- 21:54intimate sense. Even the word" know "in
- 21:57the Bible is sometimes used for sexual
- 21:59relations in marriage. That is what the
- 22:03Lord is referring to, saying," I do not
- 22:04, I have no relationship with you. "No,
- 22:06I do not know you, I do not know who
- 22:08you are. I never—we have never been
- 22:10related. So, we are now going to see
- 22:15texts around the parable that will make
- 22:16us think about what Jesus is talking
- 22:18about all the time around that parable.
- 22:22What is Jesus' theme around that
- 22:23parable? And to understand what Jesus '
- 22:26theme is in that parable. We have been
- 22:29reading Matthew 25. I want us to go
- 22:31back a little bit. Matthew 22: 1-14. We
- 22:37find a parable that is about a wedding
- 22:39banquet. in which we have read, there
- 22:44was a groom, and a groom appears
- 22:45because there is going to be a
- 22:48Matthew 22 has another parable, which
- 22:51is a wedding banquet, and in that
- 22:52wedding banquet there are two groups
- 22:54and two destinations. verses 4 to 6 say
- 22:59this:" Again he sent other servants,
- 23:01saying,' Tell those who have been
- 23:03invited, look, I have killed my oxen
- 23:08and fattened cattle, and everything is
- 23:10prepared. Come to the wedding. '"But
- 23:12they paid no attention and went off,
- 23:14one to his field, another to his
- 23:16business, and the rest seized the
- 23:17servants, mistreated them, and killed
- 23:19them. We see there are people who were
- 23:23invited to a wedding, but they paid no
- 23:25attention to the wedding and left.
- 23:28Verse 9 and 10." Go therefore to the
- 23:32main roads and invite to the wedding
- 23:34feast as many as you find. "And those
- 23:38servants went out into the roads and
- 23:39gathered all whom they found, both bad
- 23:41and good, and the wedding hall was
- 23:43filled with guests. Verse 13 and 14. I
- 23:47am not going to read the whole thing
- 23:49every time because otherwise it will
- 23:51take too long. Then the king said to
- 23:53the servants," Bind him hand and foot
- 23:55and cast him into the outer darkness. "
- 23:58" In that place there will be weeping
- 24:00and gnashing of teeth, for many are
- 24:01called, but few are chosen. "Matthew 22
- 24:04, there is a wedding banquet. There is
- 24:07someone who has prepared a banquet
- 24:08because there is a wedding, and he
- 24:10invited some people, and those people
- 24:12did not go to that wedding, they did
- 24:13not want to go to that wedding, but
- 24:15then he sent other servants to look for
- 24:16other people who did agree to go to the
- 24:18wedding. Those who agreed to go to the
- 24:22wedding participated in the wedding,
- 24:24but another group was bound and cast
- 24:25into a place called weeping, where
- 24:27there will be weeping and gnashing of
- 24:29teeth, which we know very well refers
- 24:30to eternal punishment. It says," Many
- 24:34are called, that is, many have been
- 24:36invited, but few are chosen. "So, we
- 24:38see a parable, there is a wedding, and
- 24:40there are two groups. one group that
- 24:43will be at the wedding and one group
- 24:44that will be punished because they will
- 24:46not be at the wedding. At some point we
- 24:50see that those who were invited but did
- 24:52not go to the wedding are the church.
- 24:55No, have you never thought about that?
- 24:57You thought it was the people who did
- 24:59not want to know about God. And those
- 25:01who did accept to go to the wedding are
- 25:03the people who believed the gospel and
- 25:04did want to go to the Lord. That is why
- 25:07they will go to the wedding, and those
- 25:08who did not accept will be punished
- 25:10eternally. We don’t see it as anyone
- 25:13who is lost, that is, someone who was a
- 25:15believer and stopped being one; a group
- 25:17that is the group of believers who will
- 25:19be saved and a group, the group of
- 25:21non-believers who will be condemned. If
- 25:23we continue reading Matthew 24, verses
- 25:261 through 14, it speaks of the signs of
- 25:28the end. It is a very extensive chapter
- 25:31where, from 1 to 14, it speaks of the
- 25:33signs of the end, and from 15 to 31, it
- 25:35speaks of the abomination of desolation
- 25:38. The discourse in Matthew 24, many
- 25:40theologians call it the eschatological
- 25:42discourse of Jesus, because Jesus
- 25:44speaks of what the end times will be
- 25:46like. What will the end times be like?
- 25:50And we find some very interesting
- 25:51things. For example, in Matthew 24,
- 25:54from 32 to 55, there is another parable
- 25:57, which is the parable of a fig tree.
- 26:00It has to do with a fig tree. And in
- 26:02this parable that has to do with a fig
- 26:04tree, it is no longer about weddings;
- 26:05we find the following. Verse 33. So
- 26:09also you, when you see all these things
- 26:11, know that he is near, at the doors.
- 26:15What is that parable talking about? The
- 26:19last times. When you see these things,
- 26:21know that he is near. Okay? Never
- 26:25forget our parable throughout all time.
- 26:27Our parable speaks of a groom who
- 26:28arrives. For believers, what is that?
- 26:32The coming of Christ. Matthew 24, signs
- 26:36of the end, announcements of the coming
- 26:38of Christ. Matthew 22, other weddings
- 26:42that have to do with eternity. People
- 26:45who will be condemned and people who
- 26:47will be rewarded. Matthew 24,
- 26:49announcements of the end and of the
- 26:51coming of Christ. The parable of the
- 26:53fig tree, verse 33, warnings that the
- 26:55coming of Christ is near. Verses 36 and
- 26:5937, but about that day and hour, no one
- 27:02knows. How did our parable end? It
- 27:09spoke of how no one knows the day and
- 27:11the hour. How curious. How curious.
- 27:16Words. I want you to see that many of
- 27:18Jesus' phrases are repeated because it
- 27:20is the central theme. But about that
- 27:23day and hour no one knows, not even the
- 27:25angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only
- 27:27the Father. For as in the days of Noah,
- 27:30so will be the coming of the Son of Man
- 27:31. Verse 42. Therefore, watch, for you
- 27:35do not know on what day your Lord comes
- 27:38. You do not know on what day the groom
- 27:40comes. Verse 44. Therefore, you also be
- 27:44prepared, because at the hour you do
- 27:46not expect, the Son of Man will come.
- 27:48That whole parable speaks of what,
- 27:50brothers? Of the coming of Christ. It
- 27:53is clear. You don't need to be a
- 27:54theologian or a professor. Jesus
- 27:56himself says it. You do not know the
- 27:57day or the hour. Besides, there are
- 27:59three characteristics. Number one, he
- 28:01speaks of the coming of the Lord.
- 28:03Number two, how should we be knowing
- 28:04the Lord is coming? Watching, prepared.
- 28:07That word is used all the time. Stay
- 28:09alert. Stay prepared. Stay watching.
- 28:12And why must we be constantly watching?
- 28:14Why? No one knows the day or the hour.
- 28:18Three things Jesus teaches around these
- 28:20chapters. End times. The Lord is coming
- 28:23. Number two, you must be watching like
- 28:27wise virgins. And number three, no one
- 28:33knows the day or the hour, like the
- 28:34virgins who didn't know when the groom
- 28:36would arrive. Everything is connected.
- 28:41We shouldn't look for small things we
- 28:43don't understand when the clear
- 28:45teaching, as we'll see at the end, is
- 28:46one. The church is watching because the
- 28:51groom comes without warning. You'll see
- 28:55, it's simple when you read all of this
- 28:57. Let's read Matthew 24 again. Verses
- 29:0545 to 51, we find what we call the
- 29:07parable of the faithful and the wicked
- 29:09servant. Verse 48 says," But if that
- 29:15wicked servant says in his heart, my
- 29:18Lord is delaying. "What does the wicked
- 29:21servant say? The wicked servant says,
- 29:27what?
- 29:29Why were the foolish virgins so relaxed
- 29:31? Delay.
- 29:33Because the groom is delayed. The thing
- 29:36is, now they are not foolish virgins
- 29:38relaxing because the groom is delayed.
- 29:40Now it's a servant they call wicked who
- 29:42is relaxed because he says the Lord is
- 29:44delaying. Who is the Lord who is
- 29:46delaying? Jesus Christ. In the other
- 29:49one, what are they called? The groom.
- 29:52Who is the foolish one in our text? The
- 29:55virgins. Who is the foolish one in this
- 29:57one?
- 29:58They represent the same thing. Yes.
- 30:00They also use different terms. Be
- 30:02careful with parables; not everything
- 30:04represents the same thing. Sometimes
- 30:06different things represent the same
- 30:08thing. Verse 49 says," The Lord of that
- 30:11servant will come on a day he does not
- 30:13expect and at an hour he does not know.
- 30:15"At the end of this parable, do you
- 30:20know what he does with the unfaithful
- 30:22servant? If you've read it, he punishes
- 30:24him. And what does that punishment
- 30:27represent? Eternal punishment. And what
- 30:30does he do with the good servant? He
- 30:31rewards him. What does that good
- 30:33servant who was watching and waiting
- 30:35for his Lord represent? The wise
- 30:37virgins. All the parables surrounding
- 30:42our chapter speak of one thing: the
- 30:44coming of the Lord and two groups. One
- 30:48that will be rewarded and one that will
- 30:49be punished. Who are the ones rewarded?
- 30:54The church. Who are the ones punished?
- 30:57The wicked. Wheat and tares, sheep and
- 31:02goats. Is the goat perhaps a believer
- 31:06in the church who stopped being a
- 31:08believer? Never. The goat is a
- 31:12non-believer in the scriptures, the
- 31:14wicked. The tare is someone who was
- 31:16wheat and turned into a tare. There is
- 31:18never wheat and there is never a tare.
- 31:22So, parables are often a way Jesus
- 31:24classifies the world into two groups as
- 31:27God sees the world. Wicked and
- 31:31believers, wheat and tares, sheep and
- 31:33goats, wise and foolish virgins, good
- 31:35servant, bad servant. And we could go
- 31:40on with a lot more passages that are
- 31:42simply teaching that when the Lord
- 31:43comes there will be a judgment and in
- 31:45that judgment there will be two groups,
- 31:47condemned and rewarded. Simple. Jesus
- 31:51was not someone who taught difficult
- 31:53things if you pay attention. But the
- 31:58problem is we don't read carefully. And
- 32:00it amuses me that there are people who
- 32:02say," I've heard this, pastor. I've
- 32:04been reading this parable for an hour
- 32:06and there are things that don't add up.
- 32:08"Midnight, what does midnight represent
- 32:10? It represents midnight. Midnight. No,
- 32:18it's just that I've seen pastors saying
- 32:20," Brothers, this is clear. I don't
- 32:22know how we don't see it. Jesus will
- 32:24come at midnight. "No, no, of the day
- 32:27or hour no one knows. No, but it says
- 32:31midnight here. Midnight was at that
- 32:33wedding. The other wedding of the bad
- 32:35servant, maybe it was at 4 in the
- 32:36afternoon. The thief who comes in the
- 32:40night, maybe he came at 3 in the
- 32:41morning. That's not what it means. And
- 32:45I've seen people preaching this parable
- 32:47spending half an hour on midnight, the
- 32:49other half hour on being filled with
- 32:50the Holy Spirit. And I'm thinking,"
- 32:53That has nothing to do with what's here
- 32:55. "Ah, but then I'm going to read a
- 32:58parable just to tell people, Jesus is
- 33:00coming and we must be watching because
- 33:02there will be a judgment and if that is
- 33:04the teaching, what you have to teach is
- 33:05what Jesus teaches. The problem is I
- 33:09don't know why there is an obsession
- 33:11among pastors to say," I have to say
- 33:13something that no one has said to seem
- 33:14more spiritual and inspired by God. "
- 33:19Someone once told me," Pastor, I heard
- 33:21this message of yours, I've heard it
- 33:22like eight times and everyone says the
- 33:24same thing. "I say," And the day they
- 33:26tell you something different, run. "
- 33:29Because the normal thing would be that
- 33:31all the pastors who preach on a text
- 33:32teach exactly the same thing. If we are
- 33:36teaching differently, the problem lies
- 33:38with us. Brother, the church must not
- 33:43innovate in its message; it must repeat
- 33:45the scriptures century after century.
- 33:49The problem is that today's people are
- 33:50consumerists, like in restaurants:"
- 33:52Give me something new, I'm tired of the
- 33:54same thing. "Listen, brother, the Word
- 33:56is one. I am not going to give you
- 33:59anything new. I am going to give you
- 34:01what the church has been giving for
- 34:032,000 years. And if I preach for 40
- 34:04years, for 40 years you will say," This
- 34:06sermon again? "Yes, again. The good
- 34:10thing is I have from Genesis to
- 34:12Revelation to vary, but I must say what
- 34:14the Bible says. Matthew 25: 14-30 has
- 34:19another parable, you know it as the
- 34:25parable of the talents, right? Use your
- 34:29gifts. But one must be very careful how
- 34:32that parable is explained. Very careful
- 34:35, because the first thing I hear when I
- 34:39hear this parable is: God gave you a
- 34:41talent and you have to use it, you
- 34:43can't hide it or He will punish you.
- 34:45And I, goodness, the one being punished
- 34:48is a wicked person, not a believer who
- 34:50didn't use their talent. And the sermon
- 34:54revolves and revolves around that.
- 34:56Verse 14 of this parable says," For the
- 34:58kingdom of heaven is like a man
- 35:00traveling to a far country, who called
- 35:02his own servants and delivered his
- 35:03goods to them. "A man goes on a journey
- 35:08, a businessman, the master of a land.
- 35:10Who does that master represent?
- 35:12Christ. Verse 21. His lord said to him,
- 35:15" Well done, good and faithful servant;
- 35:17you were faithful over a few things, I
- 35:18will make you ruler over many. "" Enter
- 35:20into the joy of your lord. "There is a
- 35:23servant who has been good and will be
- 35:24rewarded. In verse 30, there is another
- 35:27phrase." And cast the unprofitable
- 35:29servant, a wicked servant, into the
- 35:31outer darkness. There will be weeping
- 35:33and gnashing of teeth. "A master leaves
- 35:35. Who came and left, only to return?
- 35:38Jesus. He said," Be watchful. "" I have
- 35:43left my things. "" Take care of my
- 35:44things. "Two groups: a good servant and
- 35:47a wicked servant. Two destinies when
- 35:50the Lord returns, and we do not know
- 35:52the day or the hour He comes, but He is
- 35:54coming back. That we do know. And when
- 35:56He returns, a destiny for the good
- 35:57servants: good and faithful servant,
- 35:59you have been faithful over a few
- 36:01things, I will make you ruler over many
- 36:03. What does that point to? Eternal
- 36:05reward. Unprofitable servant, you are
- 36:07useless, weeping and gnashing of teeth,
- 36:09eternal punishment. Ah, but the
- 36:12servants are the church. The church is
- 36:15not going to be sent where there is
- 36:16weeping and gnashing of teeth. Those
- 36:18servants are not the church. There are
- 36:21some who are God's people, those who
- 36:23will be rewarded, and there are some
- 36:24who are wicked. But since the word
- 36:29servant in scripture is often used to
- 36:30speak of God's people, then all the
- 36:32servants in the parable are God's
- 36:34people. Then we have a problem. That is
- 36:39the problem when it comes to
- 36:40interpreting the parables. If we read
- 36:44Matthew 25: 31-46—I know I'm giving a
- 36:47lot of texts—but you see they all
- 36:49talk about the same thing. Verses 31 to
- 36:5434, this speaks of the final judgment.
- 36:57Look at what it says." But when the Son
- 37:00of Man comes in His glory "—who is
- 37:01the Son of Man in our parable? The
- 37:05bridegroom, right? When the bridegroom
- 37:09comes and all the angels with him, then
- 37:11he will sit on his glorious throne and
- 37:13all the nations will be gathered before
- 37:14him; and he will separate them from one
- 37:16another, as a shepherd separates the
- 37:18sheep from the goats, and he will put
- 37:20the sheep on his right and the goats on
- 37:21the left. Then the King will say to
- 37:25those on his right," Come, you who are
- 37:27blessed by my Father, inherit the
- 37:29kingdom prepared for you from the
- 37:30foundation of the world. "Verse 41.
- 37:33Then he will also say to those on his
- 37:35left," Depart from me, you cursed, into
- 37:37the eternal fire which has been
- 37:38prepared for the devil and his angels.
- 37:40"Verse 46. And these will go away into
- 37:44eternal punishment. Who goes there? The
- 37:48goats, the wicked, and the sheep, who
- 37:50are the righteous, go to eternal life.
- 37:55Brother, we have gone through Matthew
- 37:5825, Matthew 24, Matthew 22, and the
- 38:00whole time Jesus is talking about
- 38:02exactly the same thing. The Lord is
- 38:07coming, and when the Lord comes—we
- 38:09don't know the day or the hour—there
- 38:11will be a great separation into two
- 38:12groups, some who will be condemned and
- 38:14others who will be gloriously rewarded
- 38:16for all eternity. You don't have to get
- 38:21lost in the details of the parable when
- 38:23Jesus 'teaching is clear and simple,
- 38:25and it is that. Church, my people, when
- 38:29I come, will be watching, will be
- 38:31attentive, will be doing what I expect
- 38:33of them. So, two main points of the
- 38:38parable, and we find them in verses 10
- 38:41through 13. And while they were going
- 38:44to buy, the bridegroom came. Of all the
- 38:47parables we have read, I could put it
- 38:49this way. And while the servant was
- 38:51distracted, the Lord came. And while he
- 38:53was distracted, the owner of the land
- 38:55came. And while he was distracted, the
- 38:58shepherd of the sheep and the others
- 38:59came. They call him Lord, they call him
- 39:02owner of the vineyard, they call him
- 39:04Son of Man, they call him bridegroom,
- 39:06but it all points to the coming of
- 39:07Christ. And while they went to buy, the
- 39:11bridegroom came and those who were
- 39:13prepared went in with him to the
- 39:14wedding banquet and the door was shut.
- 39:19Afterward the other virgins came also,
- 39:22saying," Lord, Lord, open to us. "But
- 39:24he answered and said," Assuredly, I say
- 39:26to you, I do not know you. Watch
- 39:28therefore, for you know neither the day
- 39:30nor the hour. "These are very similar
- 39:33words to those we have seen before."
- 39:35Lord, Lord, "appears in other texts.
- 39:38You do not know the day nor the hour.
- 39:40It appears in other texts. I do not
- 39:42know you. It appears in other texts.
- 39:46Jesus is saying the same things to his
- 39:48disciples for three or four chapters in
- 39:50different ways, because he wants
- 39:51something to be engraved in their minds
- 39:53and hearts. I am coming back. You do
- 40:00not know when you must be watching,
- 40:01because there will be many who will be
- 40:03judged. And I want to make it clear to
- 40:06you with the fig tree. And I want to
- 40:08make it clear to you with the wedding
- 40:10banquet. And I want to make it clear to
- 40:12you with the 10 virgins. And I want to
- 40:13make it clear to you with the servants
- 40:15and the talents. And I want to make it
- 40:16clear to you with all of that. But I am
- 40:18coming back; there will be a judgment
- 40:20and two destinies. The only thing is,
- 40:25everything else that people teach you
- 40:27and that you do not see in other texts,
- 40:29doubt it. Why doesn't the oil as the
- 40:36Holy Spirit fit for me here? In this
- 40:39text. Ah, pastor, there are others who
- 40:41do, but not in this one. Why? Because
- 40:45we have seen in all the parables that
- 40:46the groups are two: believers and the
- 40:48ungodly. And the ungodly do not have
- 40:51the Holy Spirit. And the ungodly will
- 40:54not be filled with the Holy Spirit. And
- 40:56the ungodly do not neglect the Holy
- 40:58Spirit they never had. And those
- 41:03foolish virgins had oil, it just ran
- 41:05out. So am I saying that the ungodly
- 41:07have had the Holy Spirit, but it has
- 41:09gone out? No, those lamps do not
- 41:13represent the Holy Spirit. Could I say
- 41:19that the virgins representing the
- 41:20church should be filling themselves
- 41:22with the Holy Spirit? Yes, Ephesians
- 41:25says so. Do not be drunk with wine, but
- 41:27be filled with the Holy Spirit, because
- 41:29that is what the people of God do. Amen
- 41:31.
- 41:32But in that passage the lamps are not
- 41:34the Holy Spirit, because in all the
- 41:39surrounding passages they aren't either
- 41:40, and it doesn't appear. So we find,
- 41:44number one, a contrast between two
- 41:46groups, like everything we've seen
- 41:48before. But he answered and said,"
- 41:51Truly I say to you, I do not know you.
- 41:54"Two groups. The parable has the same,
- 41:58the same structure as the others. a
- 42:01contrast of two groups and two
- 42:03destinies. Those are the parables that
- 42:07Jesus is teaching in this text. The
- 42:13wise virgins who represent the people
- 42:15of God, who will be watching when their
- 42:17Lord comes, and the foolish virgins who
- 42:19represent the ungodly who are not
- 42:21expecting His coming, and when He comes
- 42:22, the door will be shut for them and
- 42:24they will be condemned. Matthew 7:21 to
- 42:3023. Not everyone who says to me," Lord,
- 42:33Lord, "will enter the kingdom of heaven
- 42:35. What did those foolish virgins say?"
- 42:40Lord, Lord, did they enter the kingdom
- 42:42of heaven? "
- 42:43No. What did Matthew 7 say? Not
- 42:46everyone who says to me," Lord, Lord, "
- 42:48will enter the kingdom of heaven, but
- 42:50he who does the will of my Father who
- 42:52is in heaven. Who will enter the
- 42:54kingdom of heaven? He who does the will
- 42:56of God who is in heaven. What were the
- 42:59wise virgins doing? The bridegroom's
- 43:02will. Because they only had one thing
- 43:05to do, to have their lamp lit. If those
- 43:07virgins spoke today and we told them,"
- 43:09Hey, what a great job you did. "Do you
- 43:11know what those virgins would tell us?
- 43:13I am an unworthy servant. I only did
- 43:16what I had to do. Eh, virgins, I didn't
- 43:20expect you to put flowers on the road,
- 43:22or to sing a serenade. We only expected
- 43:26one thing from you, to be alert with
- 43:28your lamp lit. And you did well, church
- 43:31. The Lord only expects one thing from
- 43:33us, that we be watching, doing the
- 43:35Father's will. Right, He doesn't expect
- 43:37us to stand on our heads. Eh, the
- 43:42virgins weren't doing anything
- 43:43extraordinary, they were doing their
- 43:45duty. When the Lord comes, the church
- 43:47won't be doing anything extraordinary,
- 43:49it will be doing what the church must
- 43:51do, watch and wait for the Lord, kept
- 43:53blameless and in holiness. Nothing more
- 43:56. And the Lord will come and say," Very
- 43:59well, you only had to wait for me while
- 44:01preaching, watching, and keeping
- 44:03yourselves pure, and you are doing it.
- 44:05"" So, I have arrived, and you are
- 44:06coming with me. "" And the rest of the
- 44:08people, who like in the days of Noah
- 44:10paid no heed, the door was shut. "There
- 44:14is no longer a way to enter. You can't
- 44:16enter the ark once the door has been
- 44:18closed. You can't enter the wedding
- 44:20feast once the groom shuts the door.
- 44:22What does that mean? It applies to the
- 44:24ungodly too. Come to Christ today,
- 44:26because that day there will be no more
- 44:28hope. No matter how much you kneel at
- 44:33the Lord's feet on judgment day, there
- 44:35will be no mercy. No matter how much
- 44:38you weep at His feet that day, there
- 44:40will be no mercy. Once the door is
- 44:43closed, there is no more entry. Surely
- 44:47when the flood began, many pleaded with
- 44:49Noah," Open up, open up, open up! "But
- 44:53it was too late, because the one who
- 44:55shut the ark's door wasn't Noah, it was
- 44:57God. Because surely, Noah's human heart
- 45:01would have said," You see, he was right
- 45:03, come in. "But it was God as if saying
- 45:05," Noah, we already gave warning; the
- 45:08judgment isn't yours, the judgment is
- 45:10Mine. "We warn people," The groom is
- 45:15coming, the door will close, "and when
- 45:17judgment comes, many will say," Juan
- 45:19Manuel preached to us that day. ""
- 45:21Martin preached to us, Jose Miguel
- 45:23preached to us, Clicia preached to us,
- 45:25"and yes, but no, now, Juan Macreo, I
- 45:27see him coming. No, not anymore. The
- 45:29door closed, two groups. two groups.
- 45:37Not everyone who says to me," Lord,
- 45:38Lord, "will enter the kingdom of heaven
- 45:40, but the one who does the will of my
- 45:41Father who is in heaven. Many will say
- 45:43to me on that day," Lord, Lord, did we
- 45:45not prophesy in your name and in your
- 45:47name drive out demons and in your name
- 45:48perform many miracles? "And then I will
- 45:50declare," I never knew you. "What did
- 45:53He say to the foolish virgins? I do not
- 45:56know you. The same expression, the same
- 45:59expression. They say," Lord, Lord, "and
- 46:02He says to them," I do not know you. "
- 46:04In Matthew 7, many will say," Lord,
- 46:06Lord, "and He will say," I do not know
- 46:08you. "But they aren't the church. Ah,
- 46:10it was church people who were lost. No,
- 46:12it was people who were with the people
- 46:14of God, they were among the people of
- 46:16God, but were not of the people of God.
- 46:18Because Jesus said," I never knew you.
- 46:20"" You prophesied, you did a thousand
- 46:22things, but I never knew you. "The
- 46:25groom could have said to them," Yes,
- 46:27you were with the virgins, you walked
- 46:29with the virgins, you were with them,
- 46:30but I do not know you five. "I do not
- 46:34know you. Depart from me, you who
- 46:38practice iniquity." Luke 13:25 says,'
- 46:40When once the master of the house has
- 46:43risen and shut the door, and you begin
- 46:45to stand outside and knock at the door,
- 46:48saying, Lord, open to us. '"Does that
- 46:51word sound familiar to you? Shut door.
- 46:53Lord, open to us. What does that sound
- 46:55like? Our parable. He will answer and
- 47:01say to you," I do not know where you
- 47:02come from. "That expression in the
- 47:05original Greek is exactly similar to I
- 47:06do not know you. Another text, Luke
- 47:1013:25 is saying that. When the Lord
- 47:13shuts the door and you knock," Lord,
- 47:15open to us, "eh," I do not know where
- 47:18you come from, I do not know you. "Once
- 47:20again, people who will be left outside.
- 47:23People who will be left outside. Luke
- 47:2513:27 to 28. And he will say," I tell
- 47:28you, I do not know where you come from.
- 47:29"" Depart from me, all you workers of
- 47:31iniquity. "Where to? There will be
- 47:33weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you
- 47:35see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and all
- 47:37the prophets in the kingdom of God. But
- 47:40yourselves thrust out. That teaches us
- 47:45something nice. We already know a group
- 47:47of people who will be with us in
- 47:48eternity. Who? Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
- 47:52and all the prophets of the kingdom of
- 47:54God. Because there will be no irony
- 47:57there, because I really want to meet
- 47:58Abraham and say," No, you didn't mess
- 48:00up with your wife to be the father of
- 48:02faith. "How did you think, out of fear,
- 48:06to let someone else take her to bed? I
- 48:09would talk so much, but it's Abraham.
- 48:11Who has the nerve to joke with him?
- 48:12Abraham. Maybe I don't know, but there
- 48:18are many questions. Who wrestled with
- 48:21an angel and ended up limping? Don't
- 48:25you have questions for Jacob? There are
- 48:27people who, when they study that text,
- 48:28have questions. What was the angel like
- 48:30? What do you mean he wrestled with an
- 48:31angel? How so? Well, we will know,
- 48:33right? That day we will be having
- 48:35dinner. I’m calling a seat next to
- 48:36Jacob because I have many. How did it
- 48:38occur to you to fight an angel? Who
- 48:39defeats an angel? What were you
- 48:41thinking? I mean, I understand a bit
- 48:43about David and the other, but an angel
- 48:45, the angel of the Lord and you win.
- 48:47Come on, he let himself be beaten and
- 48:48we all know it. I have questions. Isaac
- 48:54, Isaac, what were you thinking while
- 48:55your father took you to the mountain
- 48:57and started tying you to a stone? What
- 48:59were you thinking? I mean, what game
- 49:01are we playing? When is mom arriving? I
- 49:03mean, Dad, what game is this? Dad, what
- 49:06is that knife for? What were you
- 49:08thinking at that moment? We have many
- 49:10questions, I have many interviews to
- 49:13conduct there myself. There won't be
- 49:15YouTube to post them, but it would be
- 49:17so good. Just as I interviewed David
- 49:18Barceló, to interview the apostle Paul
- 49:20. Let's see, Paul, tell us. I think
- 49:25eternity will be necessary for
- 49:26everything we would need to ask. I
- 49:29don't know if there will be time to ask
- 49:31all the questions because I can imagine
- 49:32Paul there with a whole crowd. Paul,
- 49:34Paul, Paul, Paul, worse than Justin
- 49:36Bieber with 15-year-old girls. So I
- 49:39suppose that when we are in glory we
- 49:41will all be one just like the other.
- 49:45The second thing we see is the attitude
- 49:47of the wise virgins. The group that is
- 49:51lost is there knocking at the door too
- 49:53late and the Lord doesn't tell them,"
- 49:54You've been lost, you were mine and
- 49:56you've been lost. "He doesn't tell them
- 49:58," I don't know you. "" You have never
- 49:59been mine. "But the attitude of the
- 50:01wise virgins, what were they doing?
- 50:03They were keeping watch. They were
- 50:05keeping watch. Look at what Luke 12, 35
- 50:08to 40 says. Be always prepared and keep
- 50:11your lamps burning. And be like men who
- 50:15wait for their master to return from
- 50:17the wedding. Mind you, before they were
- 50:22virgins with lit lamps waiting for the
- 50:24groom. Now they are men who wait with
- 50:27lit lamps for the Lord who returns from
- 50:28the wedding. But everything represents
- 50:32the same thing, to open to him as soon
- 50:34as he arrives and calls. Blessed are
- 50:37those servants whom the Lord will find
- 50:39when he comes
- 50:41keeping watch. How should we be when
- 50:43the Lord comes? Brother, it scares me
- 50:45to see that the church today lives as
- 50:47if the Lord were not coming back. We
- 50:49are not keeping watch. We are very
- 50:53relaxed with Netflix, very hooked. That
- 50:55super good series that has nine seasons
- 50:57. When a believer comes to me proudly
- 50:59and says," I've watched seven seasons
- 51:01in three days. "I say," I would be
- 51:03ashamed. "" Because that means hours in
- 51:05front of a screen. "And how much have
- 51:07you prayed? How much have you read the
- 51:08Bible? Because seven seasons in a week,
- 51:11I would be ashamed that you watched
- 51:13even one. It's hours in front of a
- 51:18screen, and among proud believers. Hey,
- 51:20brother, I've watched a great series on
- 51:23Netflix. I watched the first season in
- 51:25a day, one night I stayed up late to
- 51:27watch TV. Oh, it's just that I lost
- 51:31sleep. Well, no. When I was in the
- 51:33church that I knew the Lord, when you
- 51:35lost sleep, do you know what it meant?
- 51:37The Lord wants to talk to you. That's
- 51:40how it was. And I don't doubt it,
- 51:43because there are days I've woken up
- 51:45and said," I don't need to use the
- 51:46bathroom, I'm not thirsty, my back
- 51:48doesn't hurt. "Oh, I see, I see. When
- 51:54everyone is sleeping, you want me awake
- 51:56just for you. That is how it is. Not
- 51:59today, today I lost sleep, I put on HBO
- 52:02, Netflix. No, brother, you don't
- 52:04understand that God wants to talk to
- 52:06you. Then you say to the pastor,"
- 52:07Pastor, I feel like God doesn't hear me
- 52:09, "but if you wake up at 4 in the
- 52:11morning for a week, it is you who
- 52:12doesn't hear Him. There are people who
- 52:15are not watching, brother. Pastor, that
- 52:18is very...it's mystical. God wakes
- 52:20people up at 4, at 3, at 2. There are
- 52:23people who can't fall asleep and think
- 52:24it's worry. And you think," If I'm not
- 52:26worried, if I don't have debts, why
- 52:28can't I fall asleep? "Because God
- 52:30doesn't want you to. Start praying.
- 52:35Brother, I have always thought that the
- 52:37one most interested in us speaking with
- 52:39Him is Him, and when we don't seek Him,
- 52:41He makes us seek Him somehow. I wake
- 52:43you at 4 and you don't come, come on. I
- 52:45don't let you fall asleep and you don't
- 52:47come, come on. And now I leave you
- 52:48unemployed, how are you going to come?
- 52:50But you are going to talk to me, you
- 52:51are going to talk to me because what a
- 52:53father loves most is having chats with
- 52:55his child. Someone is going to pray
- 52:58today so as not to lose their job.
- 53:03Brothers, all this, in the end, what I
- 53:05want to say is that the Lord is coming
- 53:11and we are like in the days of Noah.
- 53:14The worst part is that it seems the
- 53:15church is like in the days of Noah,
- 53:17marrying and being given in marriage.
- 53:19That's not—what's wrong with that?
- 53:20Getting married, right? The problem
- 53:23represents that we are not paying
- 53:24attention to His coming. We are not
- 53:29watching. And that doesn't mean you
- 53:31will be lost; whoever is not watching,
- 53:33it's not that they will be lost, it's
- 53:35that they never were, because those who
- 53:37are, watch. I return to the same point.
- 53:41That is how it is. Blessed are those
- 53:43servants whom the Lord finds watching
- 53:45when He comes; truly I tell you, He
- 53:47will dress Himself to serve and will
- 53:48have them recline at the table and will
- 53:50come and serve them. It is not only
- 53:52beautiful that He is going to come and
- 53:54that there will be weddings, but in
- 53:56this passage, it also says that we will
- 53:57be served by the Lord. There will be a
- 54:03wedding, and can you imagine sitting
- 54:04down and having the Lord serve you? I
- 54:10am already serving Him now, because I
- 54:12would be deeply ashamed to do nothing
- 54:13for Him here and then have Him serve me
- 54:15there. No, brother, the Lord is great,
- 54:21and whether He comes in the second
- 54:23watch—look at what it says now—or
- 54:25even in the third, for we do not know
- 54:27when He comes. And He finds them like
- 54:32that; blessed are those servants. I
- 54:36don’t know if He will come in the
- 54:38second watch or the third, at 3:00 PM
- 54:39or 10:00 AM or at night, but whatever
- 54:41hour it is, you must be watching. You
- 54:48can be sure that if the master of the
- 54:49house had known at what hour the thief
- 54:51was coming, he would not have allowed
- 54:53his house to be broken into. You also
- 54:57must be prepared, for the Son of Man
- 54:59will come at an hour you do not expect.
- 55:05All these texts are similar, brothers.
- 55:08I conclude: the Lord is going to come.
- 55:13His church, like wise virgins, must be
- 55:16watching. And when the bridegroom comes
- 55:20, we won't have run off because we
- 55:22won't be doing what we shouldn't; we
- 55:23will be waiting for Him. When Jesus
- 55:28comes, we will be waiting for Him. He
- 55:34may catch some of us eating at home,
- 55:36others in a service, others sleeping,
- 55:38but with a life that waits for the Lord
- 55:40. Waiting for the Lord. But those who
- 55:50are out there—not the church, those
- 55:51who are out there—like the foolish
- 55:53virgins who believe He won't come
- 55:55because He delays, will not have an
- 56:03extra chance when the Lord comes. The
- 56:11day to preach the gospel is today as
- 56:12well, because the day the Lord comes,
- 56:14that the master of the house comes,
- 56:16that the owner of the vineyard comes,
- 56:18that the Son of Man comes or the
- 56:19bridegroom comes, the day Christ comes,
- 56:21when He shuts the door, if your child
- 56:23didn't believe today, they are left
- 56:25outside. If your mother didn't believe
- 56:30today, she is left outside. If your
- 56:33husband didn't believe today, he is
- 56:35left outside. And if you didn't believe
- 56:38today, you are left outside. The Lord
- 56:42is coming; His people watch, the wicked
- 56:44do not. And judgment awaits them. May
- 56:49the Lord find us watching. Let us pray.
- 56:59Father, I thank You for Your word,
- 57:01which today does not threaten us, but
- 57:03opens our eyes and hearts to stay alert
- 57:05. Thank you for your word today, which
- 57:14calls us to be watchful, that today
- 57:16your word calls us to be, as we saw a
- 57:18few sermons ago, Lord, vigilant,
- 57:20guarded, and blameless for the coming
- 57:22of the Lord. Father, I ask you, Lord,
- 57:28that you keep your people attentive. It
- 57:35is not forbidden, Lord, to watch
- 57:36television for a while, but you must be
- 57:39the priority. We cannot be distracted
- 57:43by the things that distract this world;
- 57:45even if they are not sinful, if they
- 57:47displace you from first place, they are
- 57:49. May your church be attentive like a
- 57:56wise virgin with her lamp lit, so that
- 57:58when the groom comes, at an hour we do
- 58:00not know, perhaps today, we may go with
- 58:06him to the wedding of the Lamb. Thank
- 58:10you for the brothers and sisters who
- 58:11have come. Take them safely to their
- 58:15homes, watch over their return, and
- 58:17protect them, Lord, at all times. And I
- 58:22especially ask you to remove from us
- 58:23all cowardice in preaching. Lord, there
- 58:28are many right now who are outside, who
- 58:30, if the door were to close today,
- 58:32would not enter. Make us brave to
- 58:38preach, so that we may one day be, as
- 58:40your word said, sitting with Abraham,
- 58:42Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets, all
- 58:44the apostles, and all your servants
- 58:46throughout history. Thank you, Father,
- 58:52for everything, in the name of Jesus.
- 58:54Amen. Amen and amen.
