- 0:15can you be looking at me that camera
- 0:22yeah so tell us a bit about your
- 0:24background uh well I'm one of the men
- 0:26more commonly known as the Birmingham 6
- 0:28my name is Patty Joe Hill I spent 16 and
- 0:30a half years of my life in prison for
- 0:32what is more commonly known as the
- 0:33Birmingham Pub bomb and a crime I never
- 0:35committed I was released 10 years ago
- 0:37last
- 0:38week well I'd known Frankie before I
- 0:40went in like i' seen Frankie around
- 0:42London like when I was a kid in
- 0:44Birmingham uh me and a lot of Ms like we
- 0:46used to go all over the country to the
- 0:47football and what HBY and we were used
- 0:49to the club SC well there was no clubs
- 0:51in the end days like most of them were
- 0:53shabin all the legal drinking tend and
- 0:55of course like I was no different than
- 0:57with Frankie and so many others were
- 0:58like uh I suppose you put it down
- 1:01another turn away like you know and what
- 1:02have you and I us to go up to Scotland
- 1:04like up the the GBL not have you you
- 1:06know Jimmy boy all emons and Wy M and
- 1:08all all the lads and so I knew quite a
- 1:11lot of people like you know all over
- 1:12different parts of the country and
- 1:13Liverpool Manchester and what have you
- 1:15and as opposed to a certain you could
- 1:17say there were sort of Underworld
- 1:19figures like you know people involved in
- 1:21the club scenes and the illegal drinking
- 1:23gambling Dan and what have you so I knew
- 1:25them all but the last time I seen
- 1:27Frankie funny enough was uh 196 69 when
- 1:30they shipped him out and he was on his
- 1:31way up to Durham High security just
- 1:33after he get sentenced then and uh he
- 1:36came in in some green that Thursday
- 1:38night and uh in fact in fact I give him
- 1:40his dinner and I only had a few minutes
- 1:42to talk to him through the door like you
- 1:44know I'm what happy because every were
- 1:45all category a then of course they had
- 1:47the M bton report which just come in a
- 1:49few years before that for people like
- 1:52you know classified as uh security Etc
- 1:54so I haven't seen Frankie since then and
- 1:57funny enough even though since Frankie
- 1:59come out i' around I'm living here in
- 2:00London but our past just we just seem to
- 2:03be I'm here Frankie somewhere else and
- 2:05of course the status of Frank is now you
- 2:07know it's completely changed from the
- 2:10prison life you know the frankly like so
- 2:12many others now become sort of
- 2:14celebrities and do you think that he
- 2:16deserved his reputation as bit of
- 2:19dangerous oh Frank he was like all these
- 2:22people like you know if you're involved
- 2:24in the sort of world that they were
- 2:25involved in yeah you know they are
- 2:28dangerous people end of story like you
- 2:31know and uh you just don't mess with
- 2:33people like that but you must understand
- 2:34one thing which the general conception
- 2:36of The public's opinion don't seem
- 2:39understand and I know that Reggie and
- 2:41Ronnie and what have you said all this
- 2:42before and I said the same thing myself
- 2:44these people were involved with their
- 2:46own they never harmed a member of the
- 2:50public the public kids Etc and women
- 2:54they were Sant people like Frankie you
- 2:57know they don't in fact to be quite
- 2:59honest with you
- 3:00people like Frankie the Twins and what
- 3:02have they' probably done more good
- 3:03things than the so-called doters do we
- 3:06come from that sort of background and
- 3:08from the war like you know growing up in
- 3:09that era like you've got to understand
- 3:12the way things were in them days and uh
- 3:15yeah Frankie is very hard man Frank you
- 3:17brought up in a very hard era you know
- 3:19it was not about survival and what have
- 3:21you in them days you know just after the
- 3:23war when there was nothing and what have
- 3:25you so and and what are the qualities I
- 3:28mean you spent a lot of time in prison
- 3:30unjustly what are the qualities you need
- 3:32to kind of survive that prison spell I
- 3:35mean frankly 25 years or
- 3:39something equalities you
- 3:43need well we all handle it different way
- 3:46like with me when I first went into
- 3:48prison to put it bluntly I just didn't
- 3:51give a
- 3:53[ __ ] prison changes you and it changes
- 3:56you very very slly you don't even know
- 3:58you're being changed
- 4:00uh I try to tell people prison's hard
- 4:01enough for the guilty person but for
- 4:04people like me who were like I've been
- 4:05in prison before so prison was not I was
- 4:07no stranger to prison I'm no stranger to
- 4:09violence I have a number of previous
- 4:11convictions myself for violence Etc to
- 4:14me violence is another way of life and
- 4:17of course uh with my violence like
- 4:19Frankie everyone else the people that I
- 4:20was involved with violence like when I
- 4:22cut people up was other gang members and
- 4:23what have you and all the crap you know
- 4:25so uh we didn't involve innocent people
- 4:28like uh that had nothing to do with his
- 4:29put in
- 4:31prison suddenly you waking up and with
- 4:34me anyway I and I know a lot same thing
- 4:38happens to so many other
- 4:40people and you don't know when it
- 4:42happens but it
- 4:43happens and suddenly an incident will
- 4:47happen and then you realize just how
- 4:49much you've changed yourself like and
- 4:51when that incident happens you then see
- 4:53just how far you are prepared to go and
- 4:57with me I didn't give a [ __ ] life life
- 5:02didn't mean nothing to
- 5:04me
- 5:07and there's certain people in prison
- 5:09doctors Dr Cooper Etc in park
- 5:12house and I've ever a prison
- 5:15doctor had reasons to section someone
- 5:19off under the mental health
- 5:22act uh Dr Cooper had a dozen reasons to
- 5:26on a dozen occasion to nut me off
- 5:30but then again Dr Cooper knew what I was
- 5:32going through you know and he was one of
- 5:33the first people in prison to tell me
- 5:34that he knew that I was
- 5:36innocent and I say like you know I was
- 5:38thrown CAU into the wind and a bar
- 5:41carried on the way I was going I would
- 5:42end up killing people in prison I tried
- 5:44to kill people I tried to kill prison
- 5:45off you just don't give a [ __ ] and
- 5:48that's what it's all about in prison
- 5:49because prisons are not prisons what you
- 5:51must remember prisons are nothing more
- 5:53than new rbies dumping bins as a as Mr
- 5:57McCarthy the governor at one of the
- 5:59London prisons said a number of years
- 6:00ago they're just human dust bins and
- 6:02that's exactly what you are and you get
- 6:04a lot of people coming from broad more
- 6:05ramped and Etc and they come back into
- 6:08the prison system because there's
- 6:09nothing they can do with them and Life
- 6:11to these people taking someone's life
- 6:13like taking a cup of tea to them and
- 6:16you've got to live with that and you've
- 6:17just got to be as mad as the next [ __ ]
- 6:20and that's just the way it is you just
- 6:21don't care um when Frank left prison he
- 6:26said he forgot about it the next day is
- 6:29that possible possible he forgot about
- 6:31it he forgot about prison just resumed
- 6:34his normal life and it didn't have an
- 6:37effect I find
- 6:39that
- 6:41unbelievable well then again you
- 6:45see Frankie has a wonderful thing in his
- 6:48head which I don't have Frankie knew
- 6:52what the [ __ ] he was in prison
- 6:54for I didn't the guilty person I've been
- 6:58in jail before I've done word and it
- 7:01didn't mean that to me because I knew
- 7:04what I was in for I'm one of the old
- 7:06school like Frankie and Ronnie Reggie
- 7:07God rest of them Charlie and all the
- 7:09rest of them if you can't do the time
- 7:11don't do the [ __ ] crime me I was
- 7:13prepared to do the crime and I was
- 7:15prepared to do the crime even if it
- 7:17would meant a life sentence when I was a
- 7:20kid it didn't mean nothing to me I was
- 7:23prepared for it mentally and physically
- 7:26I knew what I was facing for carrying
- 7:29weapons I Etc this is the life that I
- 7:31chose not because I chose it it was a
- 7:33life that was forced onto me with
- 7:34discrimination I had young Brothers to
- 7:36bring to look after in Birmingham and
- 7:38what have you people picking on us
- 7:39because we were Aries Etc in the story I
- 7:42was there and I took care of it all but
- 7:45at the same time I knew when I first
- 7:47come over here within a matter of weeks
- 7:48that one of us was going to have to go
- 7:49to jail and it was me because I was the
- 7:51oldest but I'm very proud to say that
- 7:53none of my family has I sent my my
- 7:55brothers not to colleages and the all
- 7:57all qualified trades men and what happy
- 7:59so I took the blunt of what trouble it
- 8:02was I sort of the problems out but then
- 8:04again that was my
- 8:06choice and I have no regrets about it I
- 8:09would do exactly the same thing all over
- 8:10again if I had to do it you know final
- 8:13question you you admire from PR I do
- 8:16indeed for all the things that he's gone
- 8:18through in prison the
- 8:19beaten for standing up for
- 8:22himself uh I have nothing but the utmost
- 8:26respect for people like
- 8:28Frankie r and
- 8:30Reggie they done their B and they never
- 8:32winged or cried about it and I've seen
- 8:35others come in that were doing a hell of
- 8:36a lot
- 8:37less and all they done was wings and
- 8:40crying they were guilty a sin of what
- 8:42they were in for and they couldn't do
- 8:44their board people like Frankie Ronnie
- 8:46Reggie and all the rest of them you know
- 8:49Joe they all held their heads up hand
- 8:51they done their B with pride and that's
- 8:53you know I admired them for it you know
- 8:55for what they've went through uh the
- 8:57prison system in the old days they was a
- 8:59hell of a lot of violence and what have
- 9:01you not only from init on init but a
- 9:04hell of a lot of violence from prison
- 9:06officers on inits like Frankie had his
- 9:08legs and all broken in prison beaten Etc
- 9:10you know and uh Frankie's a legend in
- 9:14prison final question you um spend time
- 9:17now running S organization
- 9:19now you tell us a bit about that uh
- 9:22since I come out uh my life has been
- 9:24dedicated to helping other people who
- 9:27are in prison find themselves in the
- 9:28same circumstance as I was being fitted
- 9:30up by the cops Etc and uh when I come
- 9:33out of prison I said that the trend I'd
- 9:35seen in the ' 80s as it was building up
- 9:38that more and more people were going to
- 9:39prison and more and more innocent people
- 9:41were going to find themselves in prison
- 9:43and uh 10 years ago that's what I
- 9:45predicted at my first speech in
- 9:46Manchester public speech and uh I'd love
- 9:49to say that predicament was wrong but it
- 9:51came through and at the present we have
- 9:54over we have approximately just over
- 9:564,000 people in this country who are
- 9:58claiming they're innocent and what you
- 10:00call it there is no help there's no
- 10:03organization to help any innocent person
- 10:05in this country and never mind what this
- 10:06government says about the CCR see that's
- 10:08another government white wise nothing
- 10:10more nothing less and I set up an
- 10:12organization and with a number of other
- 10:14people uh we set up an organization that
- 10:17hopefully will help people like me
- 10:20because when I started it uh there was
- 10:22no help for any of us and what have you
- 10:25and we' have seen the inadequacy of the
- 10:28system we've got one of the most
- 10:29rottenest corrupted perverted systems in
- 10:32the world second to none and I'm not
- 10:35saying not just to be [ __ ] I would
- 10:37love to stand here and say that we have
- 10:39a wonderful system but we haven't we
- 10:41have a system that is totally out of
- 10:43control we have a police force in this
- 10:45country that's totally unaccountable to
- 10:46us the public who pay for their wages
- 10:49our servants the police have got more RS
- 10:52than we have they're the only people in
- 10:53the country today who practice the rate
- 10:55of saence they have the Udacity to tell
- 10:57us the crme doesn't pay but for all the
- 10:59Crooked cups and let me tell you
- 11:00something there's been over a thousand
- 11:02of us released in the last 12 years from
- 11:04the courts and that one crooked cup has
- 11:07gone to jail not one has even stood
- 11:10trial and most of them have retired on
- 11:13the grounds of ill health with 80%
- 11:15inflation proof pensions and then they
- 11:17have the adity to tell us the crime
- 11:18doesn't pay it pays well if you're a
- 11:20crooked cop in this country believe me
- 11:22and no further action is taken against
- 11:24them and this is what you know this is
- 11:27the things that we are combatting and
- 11:29the evidence which people are being
- 11:30convicted in our courts is
- 11:33diabolical uh our judges are
- 11:35unaccountable they allow they allow
- 11:37things that happen in court that defy
- 11:40common sense and logic they come out
- 11:42with statements that are totally as
- 11:45standing and they too are not
- 11:47accountable for anything that they say
- 11:49or do uh well I don't mind that but one
- 11:53thing I do say is that according to the
- 11:56so-called democracy that we have in this
- 11:58country that we're all supposed to be
- 12:00equal under the the eyes of the law the
- 12:02letter of the law and if that is
- 12:04perfectly true I don't mind being held
- 12:06accountable for my actions I've always
- 12:09weared up the pros and cons of what I
- 12:10was going to do have I done it I knew it
- 12:12was fa me I was quite prepared to take
- 12:13it I knew what would result in but if
- 12:16I'm going to be held accountable for my
- 12:18actions and so is all of us the public
- 12:20then the very least we should have is
- 12:22our servants being held accountable for
- 12:24their actions and if that is is not
- 12:27happening then believe me we're not
- 12:28living democracy what we live in this
- 12:30country it's a subtle form of
- 12:31dictatorship
