- 0:08our experiment eight
- 0:11is oxidation reduction reactions in this
- 0:13reaction we are using permanganate and
- 0:17sodium oxalate
- 0:19this oxidation reduction
- 0:21titration is kind of unique because if
- 0:24you remember from acid-base reactions we
- 0:27use indicator to find the endpoint of
- 0:29the reaction
- 0:30for this reaction permanganate because
- 0:33the purple color is going to act as
- 0:36indicator at the beginning when we add
- 0:39the permanganate oxalic acid or sodium
- 0:42oxalate in sulfuric acid the color would
- 0:45disappear so as soon as the color the
- 0:47pink color
- 0:49stays stable for like 20 seconds
- 0:52this top addition of the permanganate so
- 0:56calculation also is different for
- 0:58oxidation reduction because you have to
- 1:00be mindful of how many electrons
- 1:02is permanganate gaining and how many
- 1:06electrons is the
- 1:08the oxalate is is losing so when you
- 1:11look at the balance equation um slash
- 1:14when you watch the pre-lab discussions
- 1:16you will see the chemical reaction again
- 1:18today is just concentration of how we
- 1:20are doing the the chemical the reaction
- 1:24in
- 1:24by by practice we do the titration and
- 1:27you record your number for the
- 1:28calculations
- 1:30but for every five permanganate requires
- 1:34two oxalate ion so is oxidation and
- 1:37reduction permanganate is good oxidizing
- 1:40agent it will oxidize the oxalate ion
- 1:44and it will be reduced on its own so
- 1:47permanganate is going from plus seven to
- 1:50plus two oxidation number the oxidation
- 1:53number of the carbon is going to
- 1:54increase in the in the oxalate ion based
- 1:58on the procedure we are going to measure
- 2:00the mass of the
- 2:03sodium oxalate this is this first part
- 2:06of the experiment to standardize our our
- 2:09uh
- 2:10permanganate solution buret is filled up
- 2:13with the with the permanganate so in
- 2:15order to to fill up the buret first we
- 2:18need to wash the beard with distilled
- 2:20water then we condition for the
- 2:23with the permanganate solution i just
- 2:25want to let you know the steps that you
- 2:27must take if you were in the lab but i
- 2:30did them for you and i filled out the
- 2:32burette i washed it first conditioned
- 2:35and then i watched i filled out the
- 2:36duration to zero and that gives the
- 2:39initial buret reading for trial one of
- 2:42this experiment which you can record it
- 2:44as
- 2:460.00
- 2:48next we are going to measure the mass of
- 2:50the oxalate but for the purpose of the
- 2:53data sheet because it's asking for the
- 2:56mass of the empty erlenmeyer flask and i
- 2:59want you to record
- 3:01the mass of empty erlamer flask
- 3:05so record this mass
- 3:07as the mass of the empty erlenmeyer
- 3:10flask
- 3:11okay
- 3:12then i'm going to add
- 3:15about 0.2 grams of the sodium oxalate
- 3:21so this should go to
- 3:25120.31 almost
- 3:28so i would add enough
- 3:32i add slowly just small amount at the
- 3:35time to make sure that i'm not
- 3:37adding too much of it
- 3:39so we add
- 3:42enough to make it to
- 3:44128.31
- 3:47or in that neighborhood
- 3:50okay
- 3:52this is a mask for the flask plus the
- 3:56sodium oxalate please record the number
- 3:59again
- 4:02so we kind of managed to get the
- 4:050.2 gram exactly for this one this is
- 4:08for trial one
- 4:10we are adding
- 4:1150 milliliters of the deionized water
- 4:15based on the procedure
- 4:20and
- 4:21for this sample
- 4:23we are adding 10 milliliter of
- 4:263 molar sulfuric acid so i have the
- 4:29sulfuric acid i measure 10 milliliter
- 4:32and i'm adding to this sample so my
- 4:35sodium oxalate solution
- 4:38is ready
- 4:41and i can what i'm going to do
- 4:45because i want this to dissolve
- 4:46completely
- 4:48uh while i'm waiting for it to dissolve
- 4:50i want to start the second trial just
- 4:53preparing my sodium oxalate solution so
- 4:56please record this number
- 4:59for the empty flask
- 5:02for trial two
- 5:03this is the mass
- 5:05of the flask
- 5:06trial two empty flask trial two record
- 5:10this mass
- 5:12and i'm going to add
- 5:15sodium oxalate for 0.2 gram
- 5:18so i would
- 5:20go to
- 5:220.2 more 115.92
- 5:24[Music]
- 5:28or very close to that number
- 5:32as long as you record the mass
- 5:35exact mass of the sample you are using
- 5:38it doesn't have to be exact but we try
- 5:40to get it as close as possible okay
- 5:42record this mass for the mass of the
- 5:45flask
- 5:46plus the sodium
- 5:48oxalate for
- 5:50trial two so you have the
- 5:53the mass of the empty flask and you have
- 5:55the mass of the flask plus the
- 5:58uh sodium oxalate for both
- 6:00to this one also
- 6:02which is for my second sample for second
- 6:05trial i'm going to add 50 motors of
- 6:07deionized water
- 6:09just use the deionized water
- 6:11and measure 50 milliliters
- 6:14i'm going to add 10 milliliter of the
- 6:17sulfuric acid this is to prepare
- 6:20my
- 6:22solution for the titration i do not need
- 6:25any indicator
- 6:27this reaction does not require any
- 6:29indicator as soon as the powder is
- 6:32dissolved sodium oxalate with the
- 6:35sulfuric acid
- 6:36and the and water
- 6:38to dissolve we want the solutions to be
- 6:41hot so we hold it on the flame for
- 6:45about you know 30 seconds to one minute
- 6:47should be good enough because the flame
- 6:50is really high temperature and as soon
- 6:52as you see the steam it's good enough
- 6:55you don't want it to boil and now it's
- 6:57hot enough you're going to take it for
- 7:00the titration
- 7:03so for the titration
- 7:05as i said we do not need indicated
- 7:08initially rest reading of 0.00
- 7:12i will start adding
- 7:15permanganate solution
- 7:16and as i'm adding the permanganate
- 7:18solution
- 7:20okay the first drops of permanganate we
- 7:22are adding it disappears slowly
- 7:26but after that manganese dioxide forms
- 7:30and manganese dioxide acts as a catalyst
- 7:32so it kind of enhances this reaction you
- 7:35see that these drops are now
- 7:37disappearing much faster so when we add
- 7:40the purple permanganate it reacts it
- 7:43disappears it's not the endpoint of the
- 7:46reaction i will be adding slowly and
- 7:49mixing and until when i add a drop and
- 7:53the uh
- 7:54the the color would be stable for about
- 7:5820
- 7:59seconds and that would be the end point
- 8:01of the reaction
- 8:03so i'm going to
- 8:04to probably pause the camera for you so
- 8:07you don't have to wait too long for it
- 8:09but i will get back to you when it's
- 8:12closer to endpoint of the reaction
- 8:19okay you notice the camera was paused
- 8:21but i was adding now the pink color
- 8:25is stable for
- 8:26for now it hasn't been 20 seconds but if
- 8:29it stays for 20 seconds that's the end
- 8:31point of the reaction
- 8:32and i will ask you to record the volume
- 8:36this solution is colored solution no
- 8:38excuse you should be able to do it
- 8:40yourself
- 8:41okay
- 8:43record the
- 8:44volume
- 8:46for the
- 8:48for the burette
- 8:51okay
- 8:52i'm just holding the white background so
- 8:54you can record the volume
- 8:59this is the final viewret reading for
- 9:01trial one
- 9:03for trial two i would heat up the
- 9:06solution i would refill the v red
- 9:09because i want to make sure that i have
- 9:11enough solution
- 9:12so i go to
- 9:13[Music]
- 9:15maybe five or zero
- 9:20okay now that i filled up to zero i can
- 9:22stop at zero
- 9:23adjust to that zero
- 9:26for second trial initial buret reading
- 9:29also record at zero please
- 9:32and
- 9:33i'm going to heat up the solution
- 9:39it's not supposed to boil but it is
- 9:41expected to be hot
- 9:43i started to steam i can stop now
- 9:49and start adding the permanganate
- 9:56so first drop
- 10:03so it's taking longer time for the first
- 10:05drop to disappear because of that
- 10:08manganese dioxide is not there yet
- 10:10and after
- 10:12the manganese dioxide forms it does
- 10:15speed up the reaction so i'm going to
- 10:17have to
- 10:18to wait
- 10:21for it to disappear
- 10:23we're going to add slowly
- 10:25until the color disappears and then it
- 10:28stays permanent for
- 10:3120 seconds
- 10:33this color change is a temporary one is
- 10:36beginning of the reaction it does not
- 10:38count the first one it used about 30
- 10:41milliliters 31 milliliter so this one
- 10:44also is going to do the same you see
- 10:47that the color is disappearing it just
- 10:49took some time for the first drops
- 10:52to to disappear
- 10:54so i will be adding slowly but the
- 10:57camera will be paused because i don't
- 11:00want you you know
- 11:01watch very long videos
- 11:04but the color is disappearing
- 11:11okay end of the try two for
- 11:14standardization of permanganate
- 11:17you have all the information except the
- 11:20reading final reread reading for trial
- 11:23two of part a
- 11:25so i'm going to use white background
- 11:29and hopefully you can focus and see the
- 11:33the numbers
- 11:40and the number is 30.60
- 11:47okay 30.60 because it was hard for you
- 11:50to read it
- 11:51uh for the trial one it was 31.00
- 11:56about 0.4 difference in the
- 11:59volume
- 12:00okay that's the end of part
- 12:02a
- 12:03now i'm going to get ready for part b of
- 12:05the experiment
- 12:10okay now we are going to uh titrate the
- 12:13unknown oxalic acid basically the sodium
- 12:16oxalate in sulfuric acid solution is the
- 12:19oxalic acid we are going to titrate that
- 12:21with the permanganate i added 25
- 12:24milliliter of unknown
- 12:26solution or unknown solution please mark
- 12:29the number the leather unknown b
- 12:3225 milliliters 50 milliliters of water
- 12:36and 10 ml of sulfuric acid i heat it up
- 12:39and it's now hot i can start adding the
- 12:43permanganate i will start adding the
- 12:46permanganate i expect the same thing it
- 12:48will disappear to begin with
- 12:51and
- 12:52it would be slow at the beginning
- 12:55it would speed up the reaction
- 12:58then i have to add drop by drop
- 13:01as it disappears until
- 13:03the purple color or light pink color
- 13:07maintains for
- 13:0920 seconds at the beginning this
- 13:12reaction is slow but it will happen
- 13:15just like the other two
- 13:24okay for the data table you need the
- 13:26initial reading i started at point
- 13:300.00 because that's what you need for
- 13:32the initial
- 13:34buret reading of permanganate and
- 13:37this reaction is now started we are as
- 13:41we're adding a drop of permanganate the
- 13:43color disappears i'm going to pause the
- 13:46video again and i will bring you back
- 13:49when the
- 13:50pink color is stable for 20 seconds
- 14:10okay i guess that's
- 14:13that's it
- 14:17end point of reaction
- 14:21if the color stays for 20 seconds it is
- 14:24end point of the reaction and i will
- 14:26bring the
- 14:28curette for you to read it
- 14:33is stable
- 14:35and
- 14:36the burette reading
- 14:39is
- 14:4211.5 zero
- 14:46eleven point five
- 14:48zero
- 14:49okay
- 14:49that's the be retrieved eleven point
- 14:51five
- 14:54i'm going to adjust it at 12 here
- 14:59bring it down to 12 so i can use it for
- 15:02next trial
- 15:07initial buret reading
- 15:10for your next trial try to
- 15:13starts at 12.00
- 15:21okay initial buret reading
- 15:2412
- 15:26and you will add
- 15:28mix
- 15:30until it disappears
- 15:36first drop
- 15:37that's how it behaves
- 15:39okay very tough
- 16:02okay we reached the endpoint of the
- 16:04reaction the pink color appeared
- 16:07and it is stable
- 16:09we use almost the same amount as last
- 16:12time
- 16:15and the final buret reading is
- 16:2023.3 we started from 12.0 we went down
- 16:25to
- 16:2623
- 16:27point three so it's very similar to what
- 16:30we had
- 16:31before
- 16:32okay
- 16:33so just record the the volume that i'm
- 16:36saying because it might be hard for you
- 16:4023.3 for the volume of the fi the final
- 16:44buret reading for permanganate for
- 16:46unknown
- 16:48thank you
