2. 0:02balloon utopia market with balloons and
3. 0:04today i am going to show you how to make
4. 0:06an outdoor balloon arch a giant outdoor
5. 0:10balloon arch this is about 27 feet
6. 0:13probably
7. 0:14uh maybe a little bit more twenty eight
8. 0:16in this level three times eight and a
9. 0:18half you can do the math anyways
10. 0:21i'm going to show you how to make this
11. 0:22start to finish sit tight and here we go

13. 0:35hey guys okay so here we are in the
14. 0:37hardware store and what i've got here is
15. 0:40i've got a three-quarter inch flange
16. 0:43now you guys in the uk i understand that
17. 0:45that's kind of a
18. 0:47not so nice word but here in the united
19. 0:49states that is what this thing here is
20. 0:52called it's called a flange so you guys
21. 0:54have asked me about this before like
22. 0:56what actually it is and it's this little
23. 0:58piece right here
24. 0:59i know
25. 1:00so
26. 1:01we also have
27. 1:03a three-quarter inch nipple
28. 1:06which is going to screw right into the
29. 1:07flange there
30. 1:08and then we're going to get some emt
31. 1:11that's the metal
32. 1:12um
33. 1:13and that we're gonna slide into the into
34. 1:15the
35. 1:16uh
36. 1:18the little threaded pipe um and then
37. 1:20we'll duct tape it together and then
38. 1:23when we put the emt over it it'll all
39. 1:25come together as you will see when we
40. 1:27get there so i just wanted to
41. 1:31take you here to the hardware store and
42. 1:32you can see as i get these pieces and
43. 1:35what we do to it so i've been getting a
44. 1:38lot of questions about that so stay
45. 1:40tuned uh because we need to move to a
46. 1:43different
47. 1:44i got the hiccups too we gotta move to a
48. 1:46different aisle see in a minute
49. 1:47okay so before we were in the plumbing
50. 1:50aisle and now we are in electrical and
51. 1:53what you see me holding here is two
52. 1:55pieces of half inch emt
53. 1:58these are 10 feet long way longer than i
54. 2:00need them we're gonna have them cut down
55. 2:02to about three and a half feet
56. 2:04um a few pieces of three and a half feet
57. 2:07but this is how they come this is 10
58. 2:09foot pieces and like i said it's in the
59. 2:11electrical aisle
60. 2:13so that's one thing that we need now the
61. 2:15next thing that i'm going to show you is
62. 2:17a place that people get
63. 2:18really confused
64. 2:20and
65. 2:27hi there okay so here's something that i
66. 2:29get a lot of emails about people asking
67. 2:31me about and people get really confused
68. 2:34about which pvc to buy this is
69. 2:37pvc it is the um plastic tubing
70. 2:41now there's a gray one and a white one
71. 2:44the white one you find in uh plumbing
72. 2:47and the gray one you find here in
73. 2:49electrical and we need the electrical
74. 2:51one because we need it
75. 3:00sorry
76. 3:01with these bells on the end okay these
77. 3:03bells that are on the end are pretty
78. 3:05much the key to the success of this
79. 3:08um because they lock together and the
80. 3:10white pvc does not have the bells the
81. 3:12white pvcs you need separate connectors
82. 3:15and those separate connectors can be hit
83. 3:18and miss in terms of how well they will
84. 3:20stick together um if you don't glue them
85. 3:23or use a tap screw or something like
86. 3:24that
87. 3:26so this is three quarter inch
88. 3:28um
89. 3:29three quarter inch gray uh
90. 3:32electrical pvc so we're gonna want for
91. 3:35each arch we're gonna want three pieces
92. 3:38and then we're gonna have them cut down
93. 3:39also um so these also come in ten foot
94. 3:42lengths ultimately we're gonna have them
95. 3:44cut to about eight eight and a half feet
96. 3:46um and we're going to have two pieces
97. 3:48that we keep the bells on and one piece
98. 3:51that we're going to cut the bell off of
99. 3:53so that it will lock into the bells of
100. 3:55the other two pieces and as you can see
101. 3:58this three-quarter inch
102. 4:01uh pvc
103. 4:02will easily
104. 4:05[Applause]
105. 4:07slide onto
106. 4:11the emt you can see there it's
107. 4:14really awkward because i'm in a store
108. 4:15aisle and i've got 20 set of length here
109. 4:17you might have to like kind of squish it
110. 4:19up a little bit to like insert it in but
111. 4:21you see it just slides in and so that's
112. 4:23why we want the three-quarter inch pvc
113. 4:26and the half-inch emt because we want to
114. 4:28be able to slide one into the other for
115. 4:30stability
116. 4:32okay
117. 4:33so
118. 4:34that's that we're gonna go ahead and
119. 4:35pick these pieces and then get them cut
120. 4:37um one more thing that i want to tell
121. 4:39you i'm not showing you the wood because
122. 4:41i already have my bases set and that is
123. 4:43that when you pick out your wood you
124. 4:44want to make sure that you get plywood
125. 4:47and not press board okay do not use
126. 4:49press board press board will fall apart
127. 4:52if there's any wind or any torque so you
128. 4:54want plywood um one more little tip is
129. 4:57that if you use uh carriage bolts
130. 5:00instead of regular screws it's also
131. 5:02going to be stronger because it comes up
132. 5:03from the bottom so there you go a couple
133. 5:05of tips we're going to get these cut
134. 5:06down and i'll see you in a bit

137. 5:26so we're back and you see now we have
138. 5:29our hardware here
139. 5:31um i've got two that have the bells on
140. 5:34them
141. 5:36and one that does not have the bells
142. 5:39that we cut the bell off of
143. 5:41and um
144. 5:43normally i would probably wrap these
145. 5:46so you know or use alcohol to take the
146. 5:49the writing off of it but
147. 5:52i'm not doing that today and you'll see
148. 5:54that
149. 5:54it'll pretty much disappear into the
150. 5:56balloons it'll be okay
151. 5:58um and this is outdoors so
152. 6:00um and
153. 6:03so
154. 6:04well i'll show you this when we get
155. 6:06there okay
156. 6:07so the reason that we needed to use this
157. 6:09one is because these bells and you see
158. 6:12what's going to end up happening
159. 6:13is they just lock together
160. 6:16and it forms a very tight bond and this
161. 6:18is why we want the bells and not to use
162. 6:21the the pvc that um
163. 6:24that uh the white one that you would
164. 6:26need the little connectors
165. 6:28now when you want to take it apart
166. 6:30like you just kind of twist and pull um
167. 6:33it takes some elbow grease but it is
168. 6:35possible all right so let me just watch
169. 6:37out
170. 6:38jump
171. 6:39let me just flip this around
172. 6:43and the reason that we're using three
173. 6:45quarter inch
174. 6:46quite simply is because it's outdoors
175. 6:48and i want to make sure that we have
176. 6:50something that's really sturdy and is
177. 6:52not going to be sloppy if there's wind
178. 6:55so
179. 6:59you see you like really want to shove it
180. 7:00in there and then give it a good twist
181. 7:02and that way you'll know that it's
182. 7:03stable
183. 7:05unlike that oh and then i just lost
184. 7:08the whole thing
185. 7:09as i was saying
186. 7:12shove it in there
187. 7:13and like freely twist it good if you
188. 7:15feel insecure you can always put some
189. 7:17duct tape on it as well
190. 7:26and then test it try to pull it apart
191. 7:29okay so that's so that's that um
192. 7:32let me turn my phone off
193. 7:34whoops okay and so now what we're gonna
194. 7:36do
195. 7:37is i already have these
196. 7:40um sections of balloon that we already
197. 7:42made these are these are um
198. 7:45six quads
199. 7:47and i've shown you in other videos
200. 7:50how you're going to take the quad
201. 7:52and then basically
202. 7:54you know you're going to figure a to 260
203. 7:56through it
204. 7:57like this
205. 7:58and then you add the next quad and
206. 8:00figure eight it in until you have your
207. 8:02stacks you don't have to do them in six
208. 8:04the only reason that i did six is
209. 8:06because it makes it easier to keep track
210. 8:07of the rainbow and where we need to stop
211. 8:10for the next section normally i do it in
212. 8:12uh sections of ten quads um just because
213. 8:15it's easier to transport and i know that
214. 8:18i need fifty quads for
215. 8:20the arch we had these cut to about
216. 8:22almost eight and a half feet each it's
217. 8:24going to take about 50 quads or so
218. 8:27and the quads the balloons are sized to
219. 8:30um about eight inches each so we're
220. 8:32going to come over here
221. 8:36and we're going to start with our red
222. 8:37and usually what i do is i'll just take
223. 8:39it
224. 8:40and like
225. 8:42push it down you see how it just kind of
226. 8:43gets absorbed right into there
227. 8:45just like that and then now i'm going to
228. 8:47come and and
229. 8:50wrap the balloons around it just to make
230. 8:52it nice and tight so as i was saying
231. 8:54we're gonna
232. 8:56continue to just kind of trap the
233. 8:59the uh
234. 9:00pole right inside here
235. 9:02now i want you to i want you to see that
236. 9:04i mean from certain angles you will
237. 9:06always see the pole but for the most
238. 9:09part the balloons really hide it and
239. 9:11when people look at the arch especially
240. 9:13since this is outside
241. 9:16they see the color
242. 9:17they don't see the the gray inside they
243. 9:20don't see the negative space they see
244. 9:22the bright colors and that's what we
245. 9:23want them to see

247. 9:29now another way that you could do it
248. 9:31i'll show you in just a second
249. 9:33with the
250. 9:34with the runaway purple i'll show you
251. 9:35how you can do it if you want to do it
252. 9:36just one quad at a time
253. 9:39you could do that too
254. 9:41you see first i'm just gonna push it on
255. 9:44and then make sure that it's snug into
256. 9:46where it's supposed to be
257. 9:47and then twist them on
258. 9:57okay
259. 9:59so
260. 10:00if you just want to do it quad bike quad
261. 10:02that works too so you see basically the
262. 10:05same thing you're just going to put it
263. 10:07on
264. 10:07figure out where it's happy places
265. 10:10or you could do it with the arch already
266. 10:12standing if you want and then make sure
267. 10:14that when you twist them you're twisting
268. 10:15them around the pole and not just around
269. 10:17each other
270. 10:19okay just like that now
271. 10:21i'll show you when we go to put it onto
272. 10:23the base plate what we're going to do um
273. 10:25the meter maid only gave us 40 minutes
274. 10:28to finish both arches so we'll see you
275. 10:30in a minute now i'm going to show you
276. 10:32how we're setting up the base plates
277. 10:35we got our base plate you see i have my
278. 10:37flange it's screwed in with carriage
279. 10:39bolts you see those look like this on
280. 10:41the bottom they're not actually like
281. 10:43screws it's a little bit different
282. 10:45and then they come up with a little nut
283. 10:47here
284. 10:48and then they tighten
285. 10:50so if you use carriage bolts instead of
286. 10:54instead of regular wood screws then you
287. 10:57have just another layer of protection
288. 10:59so i'm going to put one here
289. 11:03and one right here because this is
290. 11:04approximately the width of the arch
291. 11:08okay now i have my
292. 11:10um my nipples my threaded pipes
293. 11:16and hopefully
294. 11:31so
295. 11:44okay
296. 11:46good we got that one in let's go
297. 11:48fingers crossed
298. 11:56okay
299. 11:59so you see that just screws it
300. 12:01now remember that 10 foot piece of emt
301. 12:03that we had well here it is
302. 12:06we've cut it down to about three and a
303. 12:07half feet i'm just going to put it right
304. 12:09there in there like that
305. 12:11and just to make like extra certain
306. 12:14that it's good and secure i'm going to
307. 12:17tape it so you see we got some duct tape
308. 12:19here
309. 12:24now
310. 12:24really important when you're doing duct
311. 12:26tape is that you want to go at the
312. 12:28diagonal not straight across because
313. 12:30then it will come out add a diagonal
314. 12:32like this
315. 12:33so give it some on the bottom to like
316. 12:35give it a good grounding
317. 12:37and then we kind of come up on that
318. 12:38diagonal and then i'm going to kind of
319. 12:40double over and go back down
320. 12:43just like this okay
321. 12:45so now this is super solid
322. 12:48okay gonna go
323. 12:52oops i need my pole
324. 13:10okay so another piece of duct tape
325. 13:16add a diagonal
326. 13:18give it some on the bottom
327. 13:21bring it up and around
328. 13:29and i'm gonna want to this one i i
329. 13:31didn't like the way it it just didn't
330. 13:33look that secure so i'm going to go
331. 13:35ahead and add a second piece
332. 13:38[Music]
333. 13:41now
334. 13:44when you take them apart you don't have
335. 13:45to take the tape off just unscrew it
336. 13:47you're good to go leave it like that for
337. 13:49the next time
338. 13:50okay so now let me show you what we're
339. 13:51going to do
340. 13:53um
341. 13:55because i'm going to need everybody's
342. 13:56hand so i'll do one just so you can see
343. 13:59it
344. 14:00and then um and then we're gonna have to
345. 14:02put the camera away we'll come back when
346. 14:03it's all done
347. 14:12okay so i think actually the way that
348. 14:13i'm gonna do this right now is i'm just
349. 14:16going to uh
350. 14:18i'm going to cheat a little bit
351. 14:22i'm going to leave this down
352. 14:24i'm going to lay them both down and then
353. 14:25i'm going to kind of sandwich it

356. 14:45you got it over here yeah i'm good
357. 14:46you see i'm just gonna insert
358. 14:49this right in here like that
359. 14:51okay just like that you see it slides
360. 14:53all the way to here and yes we are gonna
361. 14:55need to add some extra quads to hide
362. 14:57that but this is not
363. 14:59going to slide off of all three and a
364. 15:01half feet
365. 15:02so this is pretty secure like this
366. 15:05all right i'm gonna go do the other side
367. 15:07and then we'll have to put the camera
368. 15:08away for a minute because i'll need both
369. 15:09hands to lift it up
370. 15:10i should say all four hands
371. 15:18so
372. 15:20coming back here
373. 15:22you see just uh
374. 15:23they try to give you a better end to me
375. 15:26just slide it in
376. 15:28just like so
377. 15:30as far as you can
378. 15:33all right and we're gonna put the camera
379. 15:34away and put it up together now what i'm
380. 15:36gonna do is i'm just gonna add quads to
381. 15:38the bottom to hide the mechanics
382. 15:52there we go

388. 16:41now one final thing
389. 16:43because as i said it is outside kind of
390. 16:46windy i got my 10 pound weight i'm gonna
391. 16:48just slide it here on the back side of
392. 16:50the arch
393. 16:51just like that nobody's gonna touch it
394. 16:53it's not going anywhere
395. 16:57just like that
396. 16:58and we're good to go
397. 17:00so there it is i don't know
398. 17:02careful don't get hit by a car
399. 17:05so here we have
400. 17:07our outdoor rainbow balloon arch
401. 17:10and now i gotta do one more in 15
402. 17:12minutes before they come and tag my car
403. 17:14from the muni bay
