- 0:00we resume this evening our consideration
- 0:03of the biblical doctrine of original
- 0:06sin we began our consideration of this
- 0:09uh Doctrine last Friday evening but it's
- 0:13such a great and theast subject we were
- 0:16only able to deal with a portion of it
- 0:19we're considering in general the
- 0:21consequences of Adam's sin Adam's
- 0:25original sin and transgression which led
- 0:29to his thought
- 0:30and in him and through him to the fall
- 0:33of the entire human race and having
- 0:35considered the consequences in Adam
- 0:38himself and the consequences which
- 0:40befell him
- 0:41immediately we then went on thus to this
- 0:44consideration of the effect of that upon
- 0:47the progeny of
- 0:49Adam now we saw that this subject of
- 0:52original sin is divided into two main
- 0:54sections or if you like there are two
- 0:56main aspects to this matter of original
- 1:01sin the first is original guilt and it
- 1:06was with that we spent our time towards
- 1:09the end last Friday original guilt we
- 1:13are all guilty held guilty for that
- 1:17first sin of Adam it is imputed to us
- 1:21put to our account we are held in that
- 1:24way responsible for
- 1:27it now we come to consider the second
- 1:30aspect of this doctrine of original sin
- 1:34and that is what is known as original
- 1:38pollution because you remember the
- 1:40moment Adam sinned two things happened
- 1:44at once one was that he became guilty
- 1:47the second was that a change took place
- 1:49in him he was not the same as he was
- 1:52before changes took place in him which
- 1:55we have considered now the doctrine of
- 1:57original sin says that both those
- 1:59consequences that happen to Adam devolve
- 2:02upon us also so that we are guilty of
- 2:06original
- 2:08pollution as well as original
- 2:11sin now what do we mean by this term
- 2:16original
- 2:19pollution well it is something which can
- 2:22be described in this
- 2:24way first and foremost obviously it
- 2:26means in us what it meant in Adam an
- 2:29absence
- 2:30of that original
- 2:32righteousness which Adam had he was made
- 2:35in the image and likeness of God and the
- 2:37part of that was that he was a righteous
- 2:40person there was in him a righteousness
- 2:42corresponding to the righteousness of
- 2:44God himself his original righteousness
- 2:48he lost that so that all of us are born
- 2:52with an absence of original
- 2:57righteousness and not only that we are
- 3:00also born with the presence within us of
- 3:04positive evil there are those two
- 3:07aspects to this matter of
- 3:11pollution now we must examine it a
- 3:13little bit
- 3:14further this pollution from which we all
- 3:17suffer as the result of Adam's
- 3:21sin is not merely a
- 3:24disease it is a sinful and therefore a
- 3:27guilty condition it is merely that we
- 3:30are suffering from a disease but we are
- 3:33guilty because we are
- 3:35polluted it is something which must be
- 3:37regarded therefore partly in that legal
- 3:40manner another thing we must be careful
- 3:43to observe about it is
- 3:45this we must not say that it mean that
- 3:48it means that there has been a change in
- 3:50the substance of the
- 3:52Soul you may ask me what you mean by
- 3:55substance of the soul I mean by that
- 3:57it's Constitution we don't know what
- 3:59that comes to ution is as we have seen
- 4:02but we must be very careful not to say
- 4:04that it means any change in the soul as
- 4:09such uh it isn't a kind of substantial
- 4:12change in that way but it is rather a
- 4:14change along the lines which I shall
- 4:17proceed to
- 4:19elaborate but let us consider another
- 4:22negative before we do
- 4:23this we mustn't consider it either as
- 4:27merely a privation of something of
- 4:30something which we once
- 4:32had it isn't merely
- 4:36negative it doesn't just mean the
- 4:39absence of something in the
- 4:42soul no it is something which is
- 4:46positive it is a positive
- 4:49inherent disposition towards
- 4:53sin in other words this pollution is
- 4:56something
- 4:57active it isn't merely that we are
- 5:00not what we ought to be we are
- 5:03positively what we ought not to be now
- 5:06that came out of course last time when
- 5:07we were considering some of the biblical
- 5:10terms and definitions with regard to
- 5:14sin your modern psychologists don't like
- 5:17this they say what you call Sin of
- 5:20course is merely the absence of
- 5:21qualities you mustn't say men's
- 5:23positively bad what you mean is that
- 5:24he's not good sin is negative no the
- 5:27Bible says that sin is positive
- 5:30it isn't the absence of goodness it is
- 5:32the positive presence of evil and of
- 5:37Badness man not only is not what he
- 5:39ought to be he is what he ought not to
- 5:42be and that is something which we must
- 5:45emphasize because it's emphasized
- 5:47constantly as I'm going to show you in a
- 5:48few minutes in the scriptures
- 5:51themselves now then how does this
- 5:55condition this absence of original
- 5:58righteousness and the presence of of
- 5:59positive
- 6:01evil manifest itself in Fallen men how
- 6:05does it manifest itself in all of
- 6:08us and here again there is a two-fold
- 6:12division which is taught and emphasized
- 6:15right through the scriptures the terms
- 6:17generally used are these first it shows
- 6:21itself in what is called total
- 6:24depravity total
- 6:27depravity and let me give you the second
- 6:29so that you'll have your headings right
- 6:31the second is total
- 6:34inability total depravity total
- 6:38inability now let's look at these
- 6:41separately what do we mean by total
- 6:44depravity now here again is a term
- 6:46that's often
- 6:47attacked and indeed aless there are
- 6:50Christians who dislike the term almost
- 6:52invariably because they don't know the
- 6:53meaning of the term they attach a false
- 6:56meaning to the term and they say they
- 6:57can't abide this idea of total gravity
- 7:00if you ask them what they mean by it you
- 7:02will see that it's one or the other of
- 7:05these false definitions which I'm now
- 7:07about to give
- 7:09you we do not mean by total depravity
- 7:14one that every man is as thoroughly
- 7:17depraved as he can possibly be now
- 7:20you'll generally find that people who
- 7:21dislike the idea of total depravity
- 7:23Define it always in that way they think
- 7:25total depravity means that every man is
- 7:28as thoroughly bad and depraved as it's
- 7:30possible for him to be well no one has
- 7:33ever defined total depravity in that way
- 7:36I most certainly do not mean that by
- 7:37total depravity and the scriptures don't
- 7:39mean that by total
- 7:41depravity another thing we that we do
- 7:44not mean is this it does not even mean
- 7:48that man in his Fallen state has no
- 7:51innate knowledge of God because he has
- 7:55man is totally depraved and still he has
- 7:58a sense of God within him so total
- 8:02depravity doesn't mean that he has no
- 8:05innate knowledge of God at
- 8:08all another thing it doesn't mean is
- 8:11this it does not mean that men hasn't a
- 8:16conscience therefore it doesn't mean
- 8:18that men has no knowledge between good
- 8:20and
- 8:21evil men in a state of total depravity
- 8:24has a conscience and he does recognize
- 8:28the difference between good and
- 8:31evil but still I haven't finished my
- 8:34list of negatives total
- 8:37depravity does not mean that men is
- 8:39incapable of admiring
- 8:43virtue or incapable of disinterested
- 8:46feelings and actions you notice you see
- 8:49why I'm emphasizing these
- 8:52negatives says your modern psychologist
- 8:54and as I say unfortunately many
- 8:55Christians I can't abide this doctrine
- 8:58of total depre it can't be right to say
- 9:00look at many men who are not Christians
- 9:02they've got ideas of virtue they try to
- 9:04do good they may be idealistic quite so
- 9:07I say total depravity does not mean that
- 9:10a man doesn't recognize virtue or that
- 9:13he's incapable of disinterested feelings
- 9:16and actions it's not a part of the
- 9:19definition of total depravity at
- 9:21all and the last negative is
- 9:24this we do not mean by total depravity
- 9:29that every unregenerate person will
- 9:32indulge in every form of sin it doesn't
- 9:36mean that
- 9:38either well then says someone what does
- 9:40it mean well positively it means
- 9:45this that Fallen men or man in his
- 9:48Fallen
- 9:51condition has an inherently corrupt
- 9:56nature which extends to every part of
- 9:59his being every faculty of his soul and
- 10:04body it means that men as the result of
- 10:07the sin of Adam and of the
- 10:10Fall has this corrupt condition which
- 10:13applies to every faculty of his soul and
- 10:16of his
- 10:18body another thing it means is this that
- 10:22there is no observe the adjective there
- 10:25is no spiritual good in it oh yes
- 10:28there's a good good deal of natural good
- 10:30there's a good deal of natural morality
- 10:32he can recognize Pagan virtue yes but
- 10:36there is no spiritual good whatsoever in
- 10:39him that's what it does mean or if you
- 10:43like to elaborate it a bit more you can
- 10:44put it like
- 10:45this men in a state of total depravity
- 10:48every unregenerate men is at enmity
- 10:51against
- 10:52God that's a great characteristic always
- 10:55of total depravity he is naturally at
- 10:58eny against God and God's holy
- 11:02law and another way you can put it
- 11:04perhaps is that all his
- 11:07powers are misused and
- 11:11perverted Genesis 6:5 listen and God saw
- 11:16that the wickedness of men was great in
- 11:18the earth and that every imagination of
- 11:22the thoughts of his heart was only evil
- 11:27continually almost a amazing
- 11:29comprehensive statement I commend to you
- 11:32the study of Genesis 65 very
- 11:37carefully but listen to Psalm 51: 5
- 11:41Psalm 51 5th verse
- 11:44behold I was shapen in
- 11:47iniquity and in sin did my mother
- 11:51conceive
- 11:52me there again is an account of this
- 11:55total
- 11:57depravity shapen in iniquity ity
- 12:01conceive in
- 12:03sin listen to Jeremiah in the 17th
- 12:07chapter and the 9th
- 12:09verse the heart is deceitful above all
- 12:14things and desperately wicked who can
- 12:18know
- 12:19it then I suppose in many ways the
- 12:22classical statement of this doctrine of
- 12:24total depravity is the seventh chapter
- 12:27of the epistle to the Romans which we
- 12:29read together just now there it is in
- 12:33all its fullness with the variation in
- 12:36the use of the terms describing man as
- 12:40the result of sin I'm not concerned
- 12:43tonight particularly to go into an
- 12:44exposition of the seventh of Romans I'm
- 12:47simply concerned to show you that its
- 12:50definition of total
- 12:53depravity is a definition which is
- 12:55really complete and perfect
- 12:59but listen also to Romans 8 and verse
- 13:027 because the carnal mind is enmity
- 13:06against God for it is not subject to the
- 13:09law of God neither indeed can be another
- 13:13terrible statement of this total
- 13:16depravity but listen to Ephesians 4: 17
- 13:20and 18 another remarkable statement
- 13:23Ephesians 4:17 and
- 13:2518 He talks about the Gentiles being in
- 13:28the vanity of of their minds listen
- 13:30having the understanding
- 13:33darkened being alienated from the life
- 13:37of God through the ignorance that is in
- 13:39them because of the blindness of their
- 13:43heart what an astounding statement that
- 13:47is oh listen again to Paul in writing to
- 13:50Titus the third chapter and the third
- 13:52verse Titus
- 13:5533 for we ourselves also were sometimes
- 14:00foolish disobedient deceived serving
- 14:05diverse lusts and Pleasures living in
- 14:08Malice and envy
- 14:10hateful and hating one
- 14:14another what a terrible description of
- 14:17man's
- 14:18depravity as the result of
- 14:22sin but you notice that the scriptures
- 14:25in the some of the passages that I've
- 14:27here quoted to you now and in other
- 14:31places in order to make this thing
- 14:33perfectly plain and clear uses a number
- 14:37of terms and we must be familiar with
- 14:39these
- 14:41terms I trust that no one is bewildered
- 14:43as to why we are going into all this the
- 14:46obvious explanation is this no man can
- 14:49have a true or adequate understanding of
- 14:51the scriptural doctrine of salvation or
- 14:53no person can appreciate his or her own
- 14:55salvation truly unless such a person
- 14:59realizes the nature of the disease the
- 15:02condition out which we are to be saved
- 15:05by the
- 15:06gospel in other words we must understand
- 15:10the truth about ourselves in
- 15:13sin we can never really know the love of
- 15:15God until we realize this the way to
- 15:18measure the height of God's love is to
- 15:21first of all measure the depth of our
- 15:23own
- 15:24depravity as the result of the fall of
- 15:26men well now I said the scripture in
- 15:28order to bring this right home to us has
- 15:30a number of terms which it uses here are
- 15:32some of
- 15:33them it talks about the
- 15:36flesh it talks about
- 15:39concupisent it talks about the old
- 15:42men it talks about the law in our
- 15:46members it talks about the body of sin
- 15:49the body of
- 15:51death it talks about the carnal
- 15:55mind and there are other terms but those
- 15:58are the Chief
- 16:00terms and I think it is probably correct
- 16:03to say that in general all those terms
- 16:05really mean the same thing they're all
- 16:08descriptive of the same
- 16:11thing the important one I suppose the
- 16:15most important of all because it's the
- 16:16one that tends to be misunderstood most
- 16:18of all is the term
- 16:20flesh what does the scripture mean when
- 16:23he talks about the flesh as the Apostle
- 16:26uses it in the S of Romans and other
- 16:28places what is this scriptural term the
- 16:31flesh now you will find that the
- 16:33scripture uses the term flesh in three
- 16:36main
- 16:38ways the first is it uses the flesh to
- 16:41describe the body the physical
- 16:44body the second is it sometimes uses the
- 16:46flesh to stand for the whole
- 16:48person that no flesh should glory in his
- 16:52presence it doesn't mean that no
- 16:54physical body should it means no person
- 16:57no flesh should glory in his presence
- 17:00flesh sometimes means the entire
- 17:03personality a
- 17:06man the third meaning is what you may
- 17:08describe as the ethical meaning of
- 17:13Flesh or if you like even the spiritual
- 17:16meaning now this is the one which I'm
- 17:19anxious to deal with
- 17:21tonight but I can imagine somebody
- 17:23asking a question like this somebody may
- 17:26say you tell us that the word flesh is
- 17:28used
- 17:29in three different
- 17:31senses how am I to know which of the
- 17:33three senses is being used at any given
- 17:36point to which there is but one answer
- 17:39the only way to determine which of the
- 17:42three is used is I'm very happy to tell
- 17:45you not to have a knowledge of Greek but
- 17:46to know the
- 17:48context the Greek doesn't help you a bit
- 17:51it still uses the same term the only way
- 17:54in which we can tell which are the
- 17:56meanings the word flesh carries a any
- 17:59given point is the context and the
- 18:02context invariably if we allow it to
- 18:03speak to us will make it quite clear as
- 18:05to which is being used well now let's
- 18:08have a look at this ethical meaning of
- 18:10the term
- 18:11flesh it's very important to realize
- 18:14that it does not mean the
- 18:16body when it's used in this ethical way
- 18:20the trouble with us is that it's this
- 18:22flesh of
- 18:23ours this is the thing that causes all
- 18:25our trouble says the scripture that's
- 18:27the argument of Paul in that sth of
- 18:29Romans now when he says that he's not
- 18:31thinking of the
- 18:32body that's obviously important I think
- 18:35you'll see for this reason that the
- 18:37whole idea of monasticism was based on
- 18:40that false understanding they became
- 18:43monks and they half starved themselves
- 18:45and mutilated their bodies because they
- 18:48thought that sin resided in their
- 18:50physical frames and the thing to do was
- 18:52to keep the literal body down and if
- 18:54they did that they thought that all
- 18:56would be well now the scripture doesn't
- 18:57mean the body I can easily prove that in
- 18:59this
- 19:00way you read the lists that are given in
- 19:04various parts of the scripture with
- 19:06regard to the operations of the
- 19:09Flesh and you will find that some of the
- 19:11things mentioned have nothing whatsoever
- 19:13to do with the body take for instance
- 19:15Paul's famous list in the fifth chapter
- 19:19of the epistle to the Galatians where he
- 19:21puts it like this the works of the flesh
- 19:23he says are manifest which are these
- 19:25adultery fornication uncleanness
- 19:29lasciviousness all those are definitely
- 19:31connected with the flesh the physical
- 19:33part of of men but then he goes on
- 19:36idolatry witchcraft hatred variance
- 19:41emulations rth Strife
- 19:44seditions
- 19:46heresies well now heresy has got nothing
- 19:49to do with a man's physical frame at all
- 19:51it's a sin in the realm of the spirit
- 19:53but those are all cataloged together as
- 19:57works of the flesh
- 19:59which I think is enough in and of itself
- 20:01to prove that flesh when it's thus used
- 20:03in an ethical sense must never be
- 20:06associated with the physical frame with
- 20:08the animal part of our
- 20:11being or let me put that positively by
- 20:14putting it like this flesh in the
- 20:17scripture is almost invariably opposed
- 20:20to the spirit and especially to the Holy
- 20:23Spirit within us flesh and
- 20:26spirit what's it mean then well it means
- 20:30the working of that nature which we have
- 20:32inherited from
- 20:34Adam that which is entirely natural that
- 20:38which is entirely without the influence
- 20:40of the Holy Spirit upon
- 20:42it that's one definition but take
- 20:46another the Flesh in this ethical sense
- 20:49is the principle or the seat of the
- 20:51principle which in form human nature
- 20:55resists the Divine Law and Wars against
- 20:58the spirit the flesh lusteth against the
- 21:01spirit and the spirit lusteth against
- 21:03the flesh it's that principle in Fallen
- 21:07men which Wars against the spirit and
- 21:10resists the law of
- 21:12God or if you like a still simpler
- 21:15definition you can describe it as human
- 21:18nature in its estrangement from the
- 21:22Divine life and I think that's as good
- 21:25as
- 21:27any but perhaps strangely enough the
- 21:30best way to understand this term the
- 21:33flesh is to take that famous statement
- 21:35which our Lord made to Nicodemus you'll
- 21:38find it in John
- 21:403:6 that which is born of the flesh is
- 21:45flesh that which is born of the spirit
- 21:47is Spirit now our Lord when he says that
- 21:50which is born of the flesh is flesh is
- 21:52not simply thinking of our physical
- 21:54being now he's telling Nicodemus that
- 21:57he's still thinking in a fleshly manner
- 22:00still thinking after the flesh what is
- 22:03that well you see it is that which is
- 22:06divid of the spirit flesh in other words
- 22:09is the human race as self- evolved and
- 22:13as
- 22:14selfon it is this human race without the
- 22:18spirit of God in
- 22:21it very well then there is our
- 22:25main definition of this term that ised
- 22:28used so frequently in the
- 22:31scripture and what we are told about our
- 22:34state in a condition of total depravity
- 22:37is that we are in that way in the flesh
- 22:41and acting according to the
- 22:44flesh now one of the main
- 22:46characteristics of our life as the
- 22:48result of that is that it is a life
- 22:50which lacks
- 22:52balance and this to me is the most
- 22:55important
- 22:56matter men consist as we've seen of body
- 23:00and soul if you like you can think of
- 23:02the Soul as having those two aspects the
- 23:04most spiritual aspect and the other
- 23:06aspect so that in a sense you can use
- 23:09the three-fold term Body Soul and
- 23:12Spirit now men we saw you remember when
- 23:15he was made by God was in a perfectly
- 23:18balanced
- 23:20condition that part of him which was
- 23:22related to God was there and functioning
- 23:25that part which included his mind his
- 23:27understanding his
- 23:29part which enabled him to communicate
- 23:31with men and the world round and about
- 23:32him there it was working perfectly and
- 23:35the body was perfect and working
- 23:37perfectly yes but the important thing
- 23:39was this that as God Made Men the three
- 23:44parts were working together in a state
- 23:46of Perfect
- 23:49Harmony I often feel in the matter of
- 23:52illustrations that I'm somewhat crippled
- 23:54because I'm afraid that so many of you
- 23:57haven't sufficiently agre cultural
- 23:58background to your lives to understand
- 24:00what I'm saying but if you've ever seen
- 24:03a dairy made milking a cow in the days
- 24:05when they used to milk uh with hens and
- 24:07not with these machines they now use you
- 24:10would often find Dairy Maids used to sit
- 24:11on stools which had three
- 24:14legs little three-legged
- 24:16stools and it was always a trouble if
- 24:18one leg was shorter than the others or
- 24:20if one suddenly broke but there they
- 24:22were the three well now men was like
- 24:24that at the beginning there was this
- 24:26perfect balance each part was playing
- 24:28it's just its right part and no
- 24:31more what has sin done sin has upset the
- 24:36balance and this condition of being in
- 24:38the
- 24:39flesh means that the balance is gone
- 24:42formerly the spirit controlled
- 24:45everything it kept the balance men in
- 24:48the right relationship to God functioned
- 24:51perfectly in his spirit in his soul in
- 24:54his body the body was kept in its place
- 24:57you remember Adam and eve were naked and
- 24:59everything was all right the moment they
- 25:01sin they became conscious of their
- 25:02bodies and they became ashamed and they
- 25:04tried to cover themselves you see the
- 25:06body has immediately got out of
- 25:08proportion and you have the beginning of
- 25:10this modern sex mania this consciousness
- 25:13of sex this thinking about it reading
- 25:14about it suggesting things to it looking
- 25:17on it from the outside that's just a
- 25:20sign of this lack of
- 25:22balance and men in this fleshly
- 25:24condition in this uh state of depravity
- 25:28is one is say has become utterly
- 25:31lopsided Paul describes him you remember
- 25:33in the second chapter of the epistle to
- 25:35the Ephesians and in the second verse is
- 25:37saying that he is guilty of being
- 25:40controlled by lusts of the Flesh and of
- 25:43the
- 25:44Mind something which people forget
- 25:47everybody recognizes lusts of the
- 25:49flesh but according to the Apostle Paul
- 25:52lusts of the Mind are as bad as lusts of
- 25:55the
- 25:56flesh for men was never meant to be
- 25:58controlled by his mind anymore than he
- 26:00was meant to be controlled by his
- 26:04body he was meant to be controlled by
- 26:06the
- 26:07spiritual but that I say has been lost
- 26:11as the result of sin and the
- 26:13fall and man if you like has become
- 26:17exentric he's not at home he's not
- 26:20balanced he's lopsided he hasn't got his
- 26:24balance some men are controlled entirely
- 26:26by their bodies eating and drinking and
- 26:29various other things yes but others you
- 26:31see are not guilty of that can be
- 26:33equally in a state of lust and equally
- 26:35In the Flesh because they're controlled
- 26:38by their Earthbound Minds by their own
- 26:41Thoughts by the philosophies of men and
- 26:43not by God's revelation and not by God's
- 26:47spirit and that is why you will find
- 26:50that the Bible seems to teach everywhere
- 26:52that in a sense the last and the
- 26:54ultimate sin is intellectual Pride
- 27:00it was the great trouble with the Greeks
- 27:02their pride was a pride of intellect and
- 27:04they wouldn't listen to the
- 27:06gospel and that is why at times if one
- 27:08may say such a thing speaking very
- 27:10humanly and
- 27:11naturally that is why at times it seems
- 27:14a very much easier thing that a man who
- 27:17guilty of lusts of the flesh should be
- 27:20saved rather than a man who is guilty of
- 27:24intellectual
- 27:26Pride it is equally terrible if not more
- 27:30so in scriptural
- 27:32definition but I mustn't stay with this
- 27:35let me go on other characteristics of
- 27:37men in a state of depravity are
- 27:40these that he is controlled by self
- 27:44instead of by God I think it follows of
- 27:48necessity the original sin was put in
- 27:50the Temptation was put in that form
- 27:52wasn't it an appeal was made to Pride to
- 27:55man why should you be subservient to God
- 27:57why should you God to keep this from you
- 27:59why don't you assert yourself Eve fell
- 28:01to the Temptation Adam followed and thus
- 28:04men fell in terms of self and the result
- 28:08has been and it's the most amazing thing
- 28:11man is a victim of
- 28:13himself you yourself and I myself are
- 28:16our greatest
- 28:17enemies the curse of life is that we're
- 28:20all
- 28:20self-centered we live for self instead
- 28:23of for God and thus we are selfish we
- 28:27are self-centered we are jealous and we
- 28:29are envious as Paul puts it we are
- 28:31hateful and hating one another why well
- 28:33because we're all out for ourselves
- 28:35instead of all living to God and in
- 28:37worship of God and to the glory of God
- 28:39we've all made ourselves gods and we're
- 28:41revolving around ourselves and our
- 28:43little planets collide with other
- 28:45planets and thus there are quarrels and
- 28:47disputes and clashes and
- 28:49differences men as the result of this
- 28:52depravity has become self-centered
- 28:56egocentric and can't get away from
- 29:00himself and of course this leads in turn
- 29:03to the misuse of all his
- 29:05faculties he was meant to use them all
- 29:07to the glory of God he now uses them to
- 29:09his own Glory they were never meant for
- 29:11that so they're being abused and the
- 29:14result of persistent abuses abuses that
- 29:17they develop wrong habits and eventually
- 29:19they even become
- 29:21defective and the scripture teaches us
- 29:24that that can happen even to the
- 29:25conscience your conscience can be seared
- 29:28with a hot
- 29:30iron and your conscience may get into
- 29:32such a state because of ignorance that
- 29:35it really May mislead you you may think
- 29:37you're right when you're wrong the
- 29:39conscience needs to be educated and that
- 29:41is why you'll find the conscience of a
- 29:44Savage in a pagan country speaks
- 29:46differently from the conscience of a man
- 29:48who's been educated in virtue and IM
- 29:50morality thus you see our misused
- 29:53faculties eventually become defective
- 29:58the final manifestation of our depravity
- 30:01is this
- 30:03one that we are all slaves of
- 30:06Satan and there's nothing more depraved
- 30:09than that in a sense that is the
- 30:11ultimate of
- 30:13depravity not only has our own nature
- 30:15become twisted and perverted in the way
- 30:17we've
- 30:17[Music]
- 30:18seen but still more terrible I say is
- 30:21the fact that we've become the slaves of
- 30:23the
- 30:24devil our Lord describes Us by Nature
- 30:28and as apart from regeneration as
- 30:30children of the
- 30:31devil The Works of your father he says
- 30:34you will do we belong to the kingdom of
- 30:38darkness oh let me repeat it again I've
- 30:41been preaching out of the 11th chapter
- 30:43of The Gospel According to St Luke on a
- 30:45number of Sunday nights and there it is
- 30:48the strong man armed keepeth his Goods
- 30:51at
- 30:52peace unregenerate mankind is nothing
- 30:55but the goods of the devil
- 30:59what a terrible state of depravity we
- 31:02are in by Nature as the result of Adam's
- 31:05original sin and
- 31:09transgression now let us leave this
- 31:11question of total depravity and turn for
- 31:13a moment to the second thing which is
- 31:14total
- 31:16inability what does this mean well
- 31:19here's another of the effects of
- 31:20original sin and
- 31:22pollution and this has reference
- 31:24obviously mainly to our spiritual powers
- 31:28the Bible teaches that man is totally
- 31:31incapable I'm emphasizing both terms man
- 31:34is as the result of sin totally
- 31:37incapable what do I mean by that well
- 31:41again I don't
- 31:42mean that he cannot perform any natural
- 31:45good of course he can it's obvious it
- 31:48doesn't mean that he's incapable of
- 31:50civil or Civic good and righteousness of
- 31:53course he is his history proves that
- 31:56even though it doesn't even mean that
- 31:57he's not capable of an external kind of
- 32:00religion he is capable of that a man can
- 32:03be very religious and yet we still serve
- 32:05him that he's totally depraved and
- 32:07totally incapable well how do you show
- 32:10it well like
- 32:11this he is totally incapable in this
- 32:15sense that all his actions are defective
- 32:19good though they may be in many ways
- 32:22because they are not prompted by a love
- 32:24of God and a love to God and because
- 32:28they're not prompted by a concern about
- 32:30the will and the glory of
- 32:33God so though they may be ethically and
- 32:35morally good in and of themselves
- 32:37they're useless because their motive is
- 32:41not
- 32:42true but let me put this still more
- 32:45specifically when we say that man is
- 32:47totally incapable we mean
- 32:50this he cannot do any act which
- 32:53fundamentally meets God's approval
- 32:58he cannot do anything which
- 32:59fundamentally meets the demands of God's
- 33:02law there is none righteous know not one
- 33:06all have sinned and come short of the
- 33:08glory of God you read the third chapter
- 33:10of the epistle to the Romans and there
- 33:12you'll find it stated very clearly all
- 33:14the goodness of the world is as filthy
- 33:16RS all the goodness is as dung and refu
- 33:20and loss ultimately it has no
- 33:22Val because it cannot satisfy God's
- 33:25ultimate approval or his law
- 33:28but we also mean this by total
- 33:30incapacity or total
- 33:34incapability that men cannot change his
- 33:38fundamental preference for sin and
- 33:41self he cannot change his own nature I
- 33:45go further he cannot even make an
- 33:48approach to such a
- 33:50change men cannot get rid of the
- 33:53depravity I've been
- 33:54defiling he can't even make an approach
- 33:57to getting rid of it
- 33:59fundamentally he can do nothing about
- 34:01his
- 34:03Fallen condition his fundamental total
- 34:07depravity and
- 34:10inability even beyond that I must say
- 34:13this he has no appreciation at all of
- 34:18spiritual
- 34:20truth that I find in the first epistle
- 34:23to the Corinthians and in the second
- 34:25chapter where Paul says this the natural
- 34:27men of the natural mind understandeth
- 34:30not the things of the spirit of God for
- 34:33they are spiritually discerned neither
- 34:35can
- 34:36he read very carefully that second
- 34:39chapter of the first epistle to the
- 34:41Corinthians and you'll find that the
- 34:43apostles entire case is this that the
- 34:46natural person this person who's in the
- 34:48flesh in the condition of
- 34:51Flesh he not only can't change his
- 34:53nature he has no understanding or
- 34:55appreciation of spiritual truth
- 34:58he cannot understand it says Paul why
- 35:01well he answers his own question in the
- 35:03second chapter of Ephesians in the first
- 35:05verse when he tells us that we are dead
- 35:07in trespasses and
- 35:09sins the natural man or the carnal men
- 35:12take again that statement in the eth of
- 35:14Romans the carnal mind is enmity against
- 35:17God is Not subject to the law of God
- 35:20neither indeed can be it's an absolute
- 35:23statement of total inability let me give
- 35:26you some other scriptures
- 35:29the new man in Christ is described in
- 35:31John 1:13 as one who is born and not of
- 35:34blood nor of the will of the flesh nor
- 35:36of the will of
- 35:37men but of the will of
- 35:40God I referred already to that which is
- 35:43born of the flesh is flesh that which is
- 35:44born of the spirit is
- 35:48Spirit John 6:44 tells us no man can
- 35:53come to me except the Father which ha
- 35:55sent me draw him
- 35:58no man can come to me except the Father
- 36:02which ha sent me draw
- 36:05him read again the sth of Romans where
- 36:08Paul tells us what he cannot do what the
- 36:11natural men cannot do quite incapable of
- 36:16it and again I say read Romans
- 36:188: 7 and
- 36:218 now here then we see these two great
- 36:25consequences
- 36:28are the original
- 36:31sin original guilt original
- 36:35pollution and the pollution manifests
- 36:38itself in these two terrible and
- 36:39terrifying ways total
- 36:42depravity which we've defined total
- 36:47inability which we have defined
- 36:49again and you notice that the essence of
- 36:52the definition of both the depravity and
- 36:54the inability is this that they
- 36:57concentrate on describing men's
- 36:59spiritual state it doesn't mean that
- 37:02every man's as bad as he can be it
- 37:04doesn't mean that he's incapable of any
- 37:07sort of good at all while even animals
- 37:09are capable of that you see them
- 37:10sometimes doing kindnesses to one
- 37:12another and showing consideration for
- 37:14one another of course but the point is
- 37:16that there is no spiritual value in
- 37:18these things they have no value in the
- 37:21sight of God he can and men can do
- 37:23nothing at all about his own salvation
- 37:25he can't change his nature
- 37:28can the leopard change his skin of the
- 37:30eth the leopard change his skin of the
- 37:32Ethiopian SP leopard change his spots of
- 37:34the Ethiopian his skin and all these
- 37:36other statements man is totally depraved
- 37:40he is totally
- 37:44incapable very well then there according
- 37:46to the Bible we see men as
- 37:48ear as the result of Adam's sin and the
- 37:53fall he is
- 37:55guilty he is condemned by the law of God
- 38:00he is
- 38:01polluted he is depraved he's under the
- 38:04Dominion of self and of sin and of
- 38:09Satan and he is utterly and absolutely
- 38:16helpless he has no appreciation of
- 38:18spiritual
- 38:20truth because of his depravity and
- 38:22because he's blinded by the God of this
- 38:25will who will not allow him to have
- 38:28appreciation even if he wanted it that's
- 38:31the 2 Corinthians chapter
- 38:344 well now then there is men and again I
- 38:37would remind you of that great
- 38:39statement as we look at him God
- 38:44once dwelt here what a Calamity that sin
- 38:49of Adam
- 38:51was what a terrible devastating thing
- 38:55what awful consequences have devolved
- 38:58upon the
- 39:00world what can be done about such a
- 39:04creature is there any hope for
- 39:08him is there anything we can say to
- 39:10ourselves before we part and don't meet
- 39:12again for 3 weeks as we look at men as
- 39:15he is as the result of sin and the
- 39:19fall we've not
- 39:21flinched we have not tried to protect
- 39:23nor to Shield ourselves we've allowed
- 39:25the scriptures to speak to us and we've
- 39:28seen this horrible picture this awful
- 39:31photograph of ourselves as we are born
- 39:34into this
- 39:36world is there no hope for
- 39:39it well thank God we all know the
- 39:42answer there
- 39:45is into that awful
- 39:48condition there came a
- 39:51promise and the thing I think that will
- 39:53Fascinate us and charm us throughout
- 39:56eternity is
- 39:58this is that the promise came from the
- 40:01very God against whom men
- 40:04Rebel and still more amazing and
- 40:07remarkable is that it came almost
- 40:08immediately after man had
- 40:11rebelled for the promise was given to
- 40:14men even before he was Thrust out of
- 40:18Paradise The Promise was given to him
- 40:22even in the very Garden where in his
- 40:24utter Folly he listened to the devil and
- 40:27fell and brought all these horrible
- 40:30consequences upon himself even
- 40:32then without any delay this amazing God
- 40:37whom we worship and adore in his
- 40:39Everlasting and eternal
- 40:41love gave the
- 40:44promise the seed of the
- 40:47woman shall
- 40:49bruise the Serpent's head there is going
- 40:54to be a Deliverance a savior as
- 40:58salvation and God's Universe men
- 41:03supremely shall not only be
- 41:06restored to what it was
- 41:09before but even something beyond that
- 41:12for in him the tribes of Adam
- 41:16boast more
- 41:19blessings than their father
- 41:22last then next
- 41:25week we shall all whether we observe
- 41:29times and Seasons or
- 41:31not be thinking of the ultimate crucial
- 41:36act which made all that possible when
- 41:39the Son of God gave
- 41:42himself and bore our sins in his own
- 41:46body on the tree that we being dead to
- 41:49sins should live unto
- 41:53righteousness let us pray
- 41:59great God of Wonders all thy ways are
- 42:02Godless Godlike matchless and
- 42:05divine but the fair glories of thy Grace
- 42:09oh God they stagger us and stand out in
- 42:13a more matchless manner than anything
- 42:15else who is a pardoning God Like thee or
- 42:20who has Grace so rich and free oh Lord
- 42:27Lord we pray thee to enable us to see
- 42:31this more than ever
- 42:34before Oh God we thank thee for even the
- 42:37searching of Thy word which humbles us
- 42:40and humiliates us to the dust and strips
- 42:44us of all our self-righteousness and
- 42:47selfreliance and reveals us unto
- 42:49ourselves in all our wretchedness and
- 42:53vess and
- 42:55hopelessness we thank thee for
- 42:58all because it is only as we realize
- 43:01that we
- 43:03realize something of that love so
- 43:06amazing and so
- 43:08Divine that gave itself even unto the
- 43:11death of the
- 43:13cross that we might be rescued and
- 43:16redeemed we would say thanks be unto God
- 43:21for his unspeakable gift Lord accept our
- 43:26unworthy praise and
- 43:29adoration and now May the grace of the
- 43:32Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God
- 43:35and the fellowship and the communion of
- 43:37the Holy Spirit abide and continue with
- 43:40us now throughout the remainder of this
- 43:43our short uncertain life and Earthly
- 43:46pilgrimage and until we shall see thee
- 43:51face to
- 43:53face amen
