- 0:18help indigenous people and allies learn
- 0:20about indigenous culture how to live
- 0:23with resilience using native teachings
- 0:25and how to make real progress towards
- 0:28Truth and Reconciliation in this video
- 0:30I'll be answering the top biggest

- 0:40that you need to know as well as some
- 0:42events and learning opportunities that
- 0:45are happening right now now I've put
- 0:48together the top five questions answered
- 0:50about orange shirt day and Truth and
- 0:53Reconciliation day this is for
- 0:55indigenous people and allies of course
- 0:57now let me know if you've asked any of
- 1:00these questions in the comments below
- 1:02I've ordered them from fifth most common
- 1:06to the top and most first place question
- 1:08we have gotten in the number one spot
- 1:11which I will leave to the end so let's
- 1:13go starting with number five the fifth
- 1:17most common question about orange shirt
- 1:19day and Truth and Reconciliation is why
- 1:23orange shirts in other words what is
- 1:26orange shirt day and what does an orange
- 1:28shirt have to do with Truth and
- 1:30Reconciliation to put it simply orange
- 1:32shirt day raises awareness about the
- 1:35residential school system in Canada and
- 1:37honors the experiences of indigenous
- 1:40people past and present wearing an
- 1:43orange shirt is a symbol of solidarity
- 1:45and remembrance of the history of
- 1:47indigenous people in Canada orange shirt
- 1:49day takes place on this National Day in
- 1:51Canada on September 30th whereas every
- 1:54every child matters that appears on many
- 1:57of the orange shirts that you can buy is
- 1:59an ongoing campaign that brings
- 2:01awareness to honor residential school
- 2:04survivors and family members any day of
- 2:07the year Truth and Reconciliation day or
- 2:09national day for Truth and
- 2:10Reconciliation is the designated day to
- 2:13honor First Nations Inuit and metis
- 2:16survivors and family members of the
- 2:18residential school system Truth and
- 2:20Reconciliation research or trying to
- 2:23discover the truth of what actually
- 2:24happened in residential schools started
- 2:27in 2007 which resulted in a final report
- 2:30in 2019 which are known as The Truth and
- 2:35Reconciliation calls to action or
- 2:37recommendations to further the
- 2:39reconciliation between Canadians and
- 2:42Indigenous peoples have you asked this
- 2:44question before was the answer that you
- 2:46received different than the one I just
- 2:47gave how does it compare let me know in
- 2:50the comments below now working our way
- 2:52through the top five questions next is
- 2:55number four the fourth most common
- 2:57question about orange shirt day and
- 3:00Truth and Reconciliation day is who can
- 3:03or should participate in orange shirt
- 3:05day if you're not native can you go to
- 3:08these events if you're a brand new
- 3:10indigenous Ally or you're indigenous but
- 3:13maybe you feel disconnected to your
- 3:15indigenous Community or Heritage it
- 3:18might be really intimidating to
- 3:20participate in orange shirt Day events
- 3:22or national day of Truth and
- 3:24Reconciliation activities and that is
- 3:26completely okay I could say that if
- 3:29you're a respectful indigenous Ally
- 3:31you're welcome and totally fine to
- 3:33attend all events for national day of
- 3:36Truth and Reconciliation but I can't
- 3:38speak for them all some communities are
- 3:41extremely inclusive whereas others are
- 3:44less inclusive so you might have to use
- 3:46your best judgment if you're
- 3:49non-indigenous and you're an ally
- 3:51wanting to support indigenous people and
- 3:53communities at these in-person
- 3:55gatherings now all of the events
- 3:58workshops and courses that we at tribal
- 4:01trade host are 100 inclusive to all so
- 4:05you don't have to be indigenous even if
- 4:07you are indigenous but you feel like
- 4:09you're not everything we do at tribal
- 4:12trade Co is for you so who can
- 4:14participate in orange shirt day the
- 4:17quick answer is everyone in Canada
- 4:18should be recognizing and honoring the
- 4:21day in my opinion now have you asked
- 4:24this question before who can participate
- 4:26was the answer that you received
- 4:28different than the one that I just gave
- 4:30let me know in the comments please next
- 4:33for number three the third most common
- 4:36question about orange shirt day and
- 4:37Truth and Reconciliation day is how do I
- 4:40talk to my kids or students in my class
- 4:42about residential schools it's a rather
- 4:44difficult conversation to have right I
- 4:47know education and truth about history
- 4:49is important but isn't it inappropriate
- 4:52to talk about these things with young
- 4:54kids where do you even begin these are
- 4:57some of the questions that I get asked
- 4:59on orange shirt day all Educators should
- 5:02absolutely be including some lessons or
- 5:05activities surrounding indigenous
- 5:07culture and history if you're not you're
- 5:10doing your students a massive disservice
- 5:13to their learning experience and
- 5:16cultural awareness which will
- 5:18undoubtedly contribute to their future
- 5:20just saying now what are your thoughts
- 5:22on this do you agree or disagree let me
- 5:25know in the comments so yes you need to
- 5:28have these conversations as clearly
- 5:31simply and empathetically as possible if
- 5:34you need help navigating these
- 5:36conversations surrounding residential
- 5:37schools you can download a free guide I
- 5:40created on how to talk about indigenous
- 5:43residential schools I will link it down
- 5:45below if question on how can I talk to
- 5:48my kids or students about residential
- 5:50schools is one that you've asked
- 5:53yourself I highly recommend checking out
- 5:55this video right here on how to talk
- 5:58about residential schools to kids which
- 6:01is made specifically for teachers
- 6:03Educators and the number one influencer
- 6:06for little ones and youth which is of
- 6:08course their parents the second most
- 6:11common question about orange shirt day
- 6:13and Truth and Reconciliation day is how
- 6:16do I deal with grown adults who ignore
- 6:19Truth and Reconciliation it's super
- 6:22super unfortunate that so many adults in
- 6:25Canada and even in the United States
- 6:27were taught an incorrect manipulated
- 6:30curriculum in school anytime I encounter
- 6:33an adult who's completely ignorant and
- 6:35unaware of the history of Canada with
- 6:37indigenous people I really try to
- 6:39approach them with compassion and be
- 6:42understanding that they were lied to in
- 6:45the most crucial and developmental years
- 6:48of life their school years believe it or
- 6:51not what you learn in school when you're
- 6:53a young kid or in your adolescence does
- 6:55stick with you so it's really hard for
- 6:58most adults who've already done their
- 6:59schooling to be told hey I know we said
- 7:02indigenous people were uncivilized and
- 7:04Liars who made up fake stories about
- 7:06having their land stolen from them but
- 7:09after digging into the truth we're so
- 7:12sorry but maybe you can take the time
- 7:14out of your busy life to relearn history
- 7:17again because we apologize but what you
- 7:20were taught was false and we did it
- 7:23knowingly to try to corrupt your young
- 7:25and innocent brain thankfully in the
- 7:28workforce or professional environments
- 7:30many leaders of large companies have
- 7:33recognized how important it is for
- 7:35people in their organization to have
- 7:37awareness of indigenous people and
- 7:39culture so that they can have better
- 7:41relationships with them whether it's
- 7:44their clients co-workers Partners or
- 7:47even just being better informed in their
- 7:50conversations or being a better person
- 7:53who cares about these kinds of things
- 7:55who impact millions of people I've
- 7:58pasted some links down below where you
- 8:00can learn more about how to be a better
- 8:03indigenous Ally or how to support Truth
- 8:06and Reconciliation if you are a
- 8:08professional and wanting to educate
- 8:09yourself on indigenous people and
- 8:12communities also if you want to build
- 8:14relationships and all of those amazing
- 8:16things in the professional environment
- 8:19check out the links below now it's time
- 8:21for the final number one most important
- 8:24question asked about orange shirt day
- 8:25and National Day of Truth and
- 8:27Reconciliation the first most important
- 8:30question about orange shirt day and
- 8:32national day for Truth and
- 8:34Reconciliation is how can I help how can
- 8:37I participate what is going on depending
- 8:40on where you are located there are
- 8:43likely quite a few in-person events
- 8:46happening in your area these events
- 8:48surrounding orange shirt day or the
- 8:50national day of Truth and Reconciliation
- 8:52it if you're in education there's
- 8:56probably something happening at your
- 8:58school or there should be if you're a
- 9:01professional working in a large
- 9:03organization there's hopefully something
- 9:06happening in your workplace to honor the
- 9:10survivors of indigenous residential
- 9:12schools if you're someone who just wants
- 9:15to participate in orange shirt day or
