- 0:00if you want to improve your English
- 0:02listening skills don't try to understand
- 0:05each and every word let's find out what
- 0:09to do
- 0:11[Music]
- 0:20instead hello it's Keith from the Keith
- 0:23speaking Academy and the YouTube channel
- 0:25English speaking success where you
- 0:27become a more confident speaker of
- 0:29English you know I think the biggest
- 0:31mistake that students make when
- 0:33listening to English is sometimes they
- 0:36try to understand every single word and
- 0:39you can't even I can't if you do that
- 0:43you get lost quickly you can't keep up
- 0:46and then you you give
- 0:49up and you give
- 0:51up my white towel you must go beyond
- 0:57individual words right the secret
- 1:01the secret the one thing you should do
- 1:04is always focus on the gist first the
- 1:08gist is the overall idea right just try
- 1:12to understand the overall general idea
- 1:15how can you do that focus on the
- 1:18stressed words in a text or in a
- 1:21sentence these are the key ones that you
- 1:24really need in order to understand what
- 1:26someone is
- 1:28saying teachers we we call this sentence
- 1:31stress right and in this video I'm going
- 1:33to show you how sentence stress works
- 1:36and how knowing sentence stress will
- 1:39help you understand much more when you
- 1:42listen to real
- 1:45English let's do
- 1:49it so sentence stress refers to the
- 1:52words we stress in a sentence
- 1:56surprise we stress the most important
- 1:58words us the nouns the verbs the
- 2:01adjectives
- 2:03adverbs not usually prepositions or
- 2:06pronouns or question words right okay
- 2:10for example I live in a town near London
- 2:15live the verb town the noun London a
- 2:19noun proper noun a real
- 2:26noun so why is this important because
- 2:29not all languages do this so in that
- 2:32sentence right I live in a town near
- 2:34London you can hear the Rhythm I live
- 2:36near I live in a town near
- 2:39London right I live in a town near
- 2:42London now we don't go around all the
- 2:45speaking like this all the time where
- 2:47are you from hello my name is Keith
- 2:50hello my name is Keith we don't go
- 2:52around speaking like that but to show
- 2:55you the stress I live in a town near
- 2:57London we stress these words some
- 3:01languages don't some languages stress
- 3:04each syllable almost with equal stress
- 3:08or weight right for example Mandarin
- 3:15Chinese right or Spanish similarly tend
- 3:18to stress every
- 3:23syllable it's different English tends to
- 3:27be it's more of a stress timed Language
- 3:31by and Lodge so we stress the words at
- 3:34the same time interval let me show you
- 3:37with two sentences right and listen for
- 3:39the stress I live in a town near
- 3:43London I've been living in this town
- 3:46just near London for
- 3:47years can you see or hear the stress is
- 3:51in the same place even though the second
- 3:53sentence has many more
- 3:57syllables and that's what makes English
- 4:00a stress timed language more or less
- 4:02generally speaking um and I personally
- 4:05think that's why English works very well
- 4:07with music because it has that beat
- 4:09regular beat and so you can fit the
- 4:11lyrics into that beat now if you try and
- 4:16understand every
- 4:17word you will fail right even British
- 4:21people don't do that I've been living in
- 4:23this town just near London for years we
- 4:26hear living Town London years
- 4:30that's what we focus on so that brings
- 4:32me to my second Point why this is
- 4:34important because listening for sentence
- 4:36stress is a strategy native speakers use
- 4:39as well right we only focus on those key
- 4:44words right we are so used to the
- 4:47grammar that we will recognize the tense
- 4:49immediately right but and this is
- 4:52interesting imagine I'm in a disco or
- 4:56speaking to someone over the phone or on
- 4:58a noisy Street
- 5:00I will have strategies to help me
- 5:03understand what I cannot hear I can't
- 5:06hear everything so I use the strategies
- 5:09like one of them focus on the key
- 5:11stressed
- 5:12words also I will use the context to
- 5:16help me confirm the tense and to get the
- 5:19overall
- 5:20meaning sometimes I will
- 5:23guess and all of these are listening
- 5:26strategies that you should develop as
- 5:28well listening for stress words use the
- 5:32context and guess now there's a third
- 5:36reason that sentence stress is really
- 5:39important and it's because sentence
- 5:41stress can change the meaning of a
- 5:44sentence too right let's go back to our
- 5:47example I live in a town near London
- 5:50stress words provide the new and
- 5:52important information but I could or you
- 5:55might hear I live in a town near London
- 6:00we've changed right and maybe the person
- 6:03is saying this because they want to make
- 6:05it clear that I don't live far away so I
- 6:09live in a town near London right you
- 6:12probably still stress the word town but
- 6:15less because it's less important near is
- 6:19the key
- 6:20information imagine somebody said to me
- 6:23okay so you live far away from London I
- 6:26would probably say no I live in a town
- 6:28near London
- 6:31can you see the stress has changed again
- 6:33no is the key information to say no
- 6:36you're wrong I live in a town near
- 6:39London I stress near the other words are
- 6:43not stressed so much and they almost
- 6:47disappear because we're repeating them
- 6:49they're not
- 6:51important got it of course do remember
- 6:54right context and intonation play a very
- 6:58important role in deciding ing what the
- 7:00person means what they're trying to say
- 7:03but knowing sentence stress it's
- 7:06essential and it will really help you
- 7:09understand native English speakers or
- 7:12proficient English speakers so to
- 7:14summarize whatever your level of English
- 7:17there will always be things you don't
- 7:19understand okay accept it don't try to
- 7:23understand everything focus on the
- 7:26stressed words Focus on understanding
- 7:30the overall meaning focus on
- 7:34gist now your next question is great
- 7:38Keith how do I do this how do I develop
- 7:41and practice this skill great question
- 7:44let me give you five tips to help you do
- 7:48this in the next part of the video oh by
- 7:52the way if you're enjoying this and
- 7:54finding it useful do remember to

- 8:02okay tips for practice number one do
- 8:04dictations a dictation is where you
- 8:06listen and you write down or type what
- 8:09you hear so do dictations with very very
- 8:13short audio texts just two to three
- 8:16sentences okay listen and write the key
- 8:21words the stressed words listen again
- 8:25and add any extra words if you can
- 8:28listen a third time and just try to
- 8:31write everything you can then go back
- 8:33and check with the tape script if you
- 8:35can get a tape script nowadays on
- 8:38YouTube videos you can get the tape
- 8:40scripts very easily dictations it's
- 8:43great we do this a lot in the Gold Live
- 8:45lessons um in the gold course students
- 8:49enjoy it and find it very very
- 8:51useful I think I hope so number two do
- 8:56plenty of longer listening new new
- 8:59stories podcasts things like that where
- 9:02you don't look up any words you don't
- 9:06take notes you just listen so it doesn't
- 9:09feel like studying right it it feels
- 9:12that you're more like a native speaker
- 9:14rather than a
- 9:16student number three change your
- 9:18expectations don't expect to understand
- 9:24everything number four listen to English
- 9:27at least one hour a day
- 9:30yes as students we don't listen enough 1
- 9:34hour a day now that can be fitting it
- 9:37into your daily routine 20 minutes in
- 9:39the morning when everybody's getting up
- 9:42um before everybody wakes up maybe on
- 9:45your commute for 10 minutes maybe on
- 9:47your daily walk for 20 minutes in the
- 9:49gym for 10 minutes or just before you go
- 9:52to bed another 20 minutes try and get
- 9:56in one hour a day if you can do 10,000
- 10:00steps you can do an hour of English the
- 10:03thing is if you do you will notice a
- 10:06huge Improvement in weeks number five
- 10:10stop using
- 10:12subtitles I know I'm sorry and I know on
- 10:16Netflix it's like what did he say what
- 10:18did he say because the noise is louder
- 10:20than the voice but try and get into the
- 10:23Habit sometimes not using subtitles why
- 10:27because subtitles ENC encourage you to
- 10:29focus on every single word as you're
- 10:33reading right doesn't help you focus on
- 10:36the stressed words that's it five easy
- 10:41tips so there you go now you know what
- 10:44sentence stress is you know why it's
- 10:47important and how to practice it so what
- 10:51are you going to do now let me know in
