Once You Can Afford It — Upgrade These 8 Things in Your Home — Transcript

- 0:00Many of us wish we had a larger budget
- 0:01when furnishing our homes. Why? Because
- 0:04we'd have more options. Unfortunately,
- 0:06having more to spend doesn't necessarily
- 0:08make it easier to make good decisions.
- 0:10There are sofas that cost three times as
- 0:12much as others, tables made from exotic
- 0:15materials, and lighting fixtures with
- 0:17price tags that make you wonder whether
- 0:18the cure for cancer is illuminated from
- 0:21them. Sometimes there's a good reason
- 0:22for those prices, other times there
- 0:24really isn't. You can find expensive
- 0:26furniture that's disappointing once you
- 0:28look at it closely. You can also find
- 0:30relatively modest pieces that are
- 0:32beautifully constructed, thoughtfully
- 0:34designed, and perfectly suited to the
- 0:36room. So, having a larger budget
- 0:38shouldn't mean replacing everything you
- 0:40own with a more expensive version. What
- 0:42matters is recognizing when spending
- 0:45more will get you something better.
- 0:47Maybe it's superior craftsmanship,
- 0:49greater comfort, or an architectural
- 0:51improvement that changes how you
- 0:52experience your home. These are the
- 0:55purchases worth understanding. My name
- 0:57is Chaudhry and today we're exploring
- 0:59eight upgrades that I believe deserve
- 1:01the additional investment. They vary
- 1:03considerably in price, but for each one
- 1:05we'll discuss why it might be worth
- 1:07considering and what to look for when
- 1:09spending that money. If you're a
- 1:11returning subscriber, hit the thumbs up.
- 1:13If you're new here, hopefully by the end
- 1:15of this video you'll be a subscriber.
- 1:17Remember that if you would like our help
- 1:19in designing your room, you can have
- 1:21that help by clicking the link in the
- 1:23description below. We'll begin with the
- 1:25sofa, partly because it's such an
- 1:27important furnishing, and partly because
- 1:29it's quite easy to buy the wrong one.
- 1:31Showrooms are excellent at highlighting
- 1:33furniture's best attributes. Not in a
- 1:35purposely deceiving way, it's simply the
- 1:38nature of judging many different pieces
- 1:40based on a quick judgment of their
- 1:42appearance. Like online dating apps,
- 1:44which showcase a single photo of a
- 1:46person and prompt you to swipe left or
- 1:48right, meaning yes or no, after 2
- 1:50seconds of consideration. Do you have
- 1:52anything in common with that person?
- 1:54Will you have good conversation? Do they
- 1:56have the level of integrity and
- 1:58genuineness that you admire? A showroom
- 2:01creates a similar environment for
- 2:02furniture. We can sit down for half a
- 2:04minute and decide, "This is it. This is
- 2:06the sofa that was made for me." 30
- 2:09seconds tells you very little about
- 2:11spending an entire evening with it, and
- 2:13even less about how it'll feel 5 years
- 2:15from now. A sofa is one of the largest
- 2:18and most frequently used furnishings in
- 2:20your living room. A better designed sofa
- 2:22can improve the room's appearance while
- 2:24providing comfort that lasts for years.
- 2:27A lot of that longevity is determined by
- 2:29what lies beneath the upholstery,
- 2:32starting with the frame. Kiln-dried
- 2:33hardwood is a good option, as is
- 2:35properly engineered plywood, provided
- 2:38the joints are reinforced and the frame
- 2:40is firmly assembled. Both can provide
- 2:42the strength needed to withstand years
- 2:44of regular use. Then there's the
- 2:46suspension. These are the springs
- 2:48underneath the cushions that support
- 2:49your weight. You'll sometimes hear
- 2:51eight-way hand-tied springs described as
- 2:53the gold standard. These use individual
- 2:56springs connected by hand, while another
- 2:58common option, sinuous springs, used
- 3:01curved steel springs stretching across
- 3:03the frame. Both can perform if
- 3:05constructed well. So, I'd be more
- 3:07interested in how comfortably the seat
- 3:09supports your weight rather than which
- 3:11spring system the manufacturer
- 3:13advertises. Now, you can have the
- 3:16greatest springs on Earth, but if you
- 3:17sit on them directly, it's not going to
- 3:19be an enjoyable time. That's why we have
- 3:21cushions. Some people love sinking into
- 3:24a soft sofa. Others prefer firmer
- 3:26seating that holds its shape. Both are
- 3:28fine. The problem comes when softness is
- 3:31mistaken for lasting comfort. A cushion
- 3:33might feel wonderfully relaxing for the
- 3:35first few minutes, only for you to then
- 3:37realize you've sunk so deeply it might
- 3:39as well be a McDonald's ball pit. Higher
- 3:42resilience foam can help prevent this,
- 3:44allowing cushions to recover their shape
- 3:46after being compressed. In terms of
- 3:48upholstery, you want fabric that looks
- 3:50attractive, feels comfortable, and can
- 3:52withstand how your household uses the
- 3:54furniture. Watch for excessive pilling,
- 3:57difficult cleaning, and susceptibility
- 3:59to fading. If it's mentioned to you as a
- 4:01selling point, don't let extraordinarily
- 4:03high abrasion rating sway you one way or
- 4:06the other. These are measurements of how
- 4:08well fabric withstands repeated rubbing,
- 4:10but the Association for Contract
- 4:12Textiles cautions that ratings exceeding
- 4:15100,000 double rubs don't reliably
- 4:18indicate proportionally longer fabric
- 4:20life. A fabric rated at 200,000 won't
- 4:23necessarily last twice as long as one
- 4:26rated at 100,000. Finally, there's one
- 4:29more thing before you purchase. Sit on
- 4:31the sofa naturally, meaning the way you
- 4:33would in the comfort of your own home,
- 4:35not politely perched 3 in from the edge
- 4:38like you're waiting to be asked to dance
- 4:39at prom. Lean back, get comfortable,
- 4:42stay there for a while. You might get
- 4:44some looks, but those will be from
- 4:45novices. You're a professional at work.
- 4:48Is the seat too deep? Are you reaching
- 4:50for pillows to support your back? Can
- 4:51you get up comfortably? And keep in mind
- 4:53how you'll use the sofa for reading,
- 4:56entertaining, watching television, or
- 4:58stretching out for a nap? Because even
- 5:00an expertly constructed sofa isn't a
- 5:03worthwhile upgrade if it's uncomfortable
- 5:05for the way you live. The second is an
- 5:08exceptional coffee table. Choosing a
- 5:10coffee table is slightly different. With
- 5:12a sofa, you're paying a great deal for
- 5:14what you can't see. With a coffee table,
- 5:17much of the value is in what you can
- 5:19see. Think about its location,
- 5:21surrounded by the largest furnishings,
- 5:23occupying a prominent position in the
- 5:25seating arrangement. Yet, we often treat
- 5:27it as an anonymous object, a rectangle
- 5:31of wood with four legs, purchased
- 5:33because the room needs somewhere to put
- 5:34a drink. I appreciate the simplicity in
- 5:37that view, but given how visible a
- 5:39coffee table is, it's also an
- 5:41opportunity to introduce something that
- 5:42gives the entire room more character.
- 5:45Imagine a sculpted walnut base, a richly
- 5:48veined stone top, or an unusual
- 5:51architectural shape. It still holds your
- 5:53books and coffee, but now, even when
- 5:55nobody is using it, the table
- 5:57contributes something to the appearance
- 5:59of the room. That's a legitimate reason
- 6:01to spend more. You're paying for the
- 6:03design itself, the pleasure of owning
- 6:05something whose shape, materials, and
- 6:07details have been thoughtfully
- 6:09considered. Of course, an unusual
- 6:11appearance or expensive material doesn't
- 6:13automatically mean the piece is
- 6:15well-made. Look at the edges and
- 6:17underside. Examine the joints. Look at
- 6:19how securely the tabletop connects to
- 6:21its base. Solid hardwood tables can be
- 6:24wonderful, but don't automatically
- 6:25assume they're superior to real wood
- 6:27veneer. Solid wood naturally expands and
- 6:30contracts as humidity changes. On larger
- 6:32tabletops, that movement can sometimes
- 6:34cause warping or cracking if the
- 6:36furniture hasn't been constructed to
- 6:38accommodate it. A well-made table with
- 6:41genuine hardwood veneer over a stable
- 6:43engineered core can be less prone to
- 6:46those problems. And because the surface
- 6:47is real wood, you still get the natural
- 6:50grain and character. So, judge the
- 6:52quality of the construction rather than
- 6:54relying entirely on the material
- 6:56description. Natural stone has its own
- 6:58considerations. Marble and limestone,
- 7:01for example, can develop etching, which
- 7:03are dull marks when exposed to acidic
- 7:05substances like lemon juice, vinegar, or
- 7:08wine. Sealing can help prevent stains,
- 7:11but it generally won't protect against
- 7:13this type of damage. It's worth
- 7:15understanding if you plan to use the
- 7:16stone table for food and drink. Finally,
- 7:19consider the proportions. A useful
- 7:21starting point is a coffee table
- 7:23approximately half to 2/3 the length of
- 7:26the sofa it's going to sit in front of.
- 7:28Allow 12 to 18 in between the table and
- 7:31seating, with the tabletop around seat
- 7:33height or slightly lower. These aren't
- 7:35absolute rules, but they're worth
- 7:37checking before discovering your
- 7:38expensive new table is difficult to walk
- 7:41around or just looks out of place among
- 7:43the furniture. Ultimately, if you're
- 7:45spending considerably more on a coffee
- 7:48table, choose something whose design,
- 7:50materials, or craftsmanship genuinely
- 7:53appeal to you. Something that gives the
- 7:55room a character it wouldn't otherwise
- 7:56have.
- 7:57Number three is a properly fitted window
- 8:00treatment. I've seen rooms with
- 8:02perfectly good furniture that still
- 8:03looked unfinished, and the problem
- 8:06wasn't the furniture, it was the
- 8:07windows. More specifically, the curtains
- 8:09were only there to cover the glass
- 8:11without considering their effect on the
- 8:13room. Ready-made panels can provide
- 8:15privacy, and sometimes that's all you
- 8:17need. But, properly fitted drapery can
- 8:20accomplish much more. It can make
- 8:21ceilings appear taller, give plain walls
- 8:24greater presence, soften the surrounding
- 8:26architecture, and make the entire room
- 8:28feel more complete. That's a large
- 8:30improvement from something we usually
- 8:31think of as a way to cover a window.
- 8:34Much of that improvement comes down to
- 8:35how the curtains are sized and
- 8:37installed. Let's say your window is 60
- 8:39in wide. You purchase two panels, each
- 8:4230 in wide. Together, that's 60 in of
- 8:45fabric. Makes sense, basic arithmetic.
- 8:48But, that's wrong. Because we've tried
- 8:50to solve an algebra problem with simple
- 8:52addition. When those curtains are
- 8:53closed, there's almost no extra material
- 8:56available to create folds. They hang
- 8:58nearly flat. Even an expensive fabric
- 9:01can look rather cheap when it's
- 9:02stretched across the window like that.
- 9:05To avoid this, you need what designers
- 9:06call fullness. For many conventional
- 9:09drapery styles, the combined width of
- 9:11the flat curtain fabric should measure
- 9:13approximately 1 and 1/2 to 2 times the
- 9:16span being covered. So, for a 60 in
- 9:19opening, you could need 90 to 120 in of
- 9:22fabric width, depending on the style.
- 9:24That extra material allows the curtains
- 9:26to maintain attractive folds, even when
- 9:29they're fully closed. Now, the amount of
- 9:31fabric is only part of getting the
- 9:33proportions right. Where you install the
- 9:35hardware matters, too. A curtain rod
- 9:37that stops at the edges of the window
- 9:39will leave most of the fabric gathered
- 9:41in front of the glass when the curtains
- 9:43are open. This blocks daylight and can
- 9:45make the window appear smaller.
- 9:47Extending the rod roughly 6 to 12 in
- 9:50beyond the sides gives the panels room
- 9:53to gather against the wall. You expose
- 9:55more of the window and the entire
- 9:56arrangement looks broader. Mounting the
- 9:59curtains higher where appropriate can
- 10:00also give the impression of taller
- 10:02windows and ceilings. The panels should
- 10:04meet the floor in a calculated way
- 10:06rather than stopping awkwardly several
- 10:08inches above it. These details are where
- 10:11properly fitted or custom-made window
- 10:13treatments earn their additional cost.
- 10:15Like being professionally fitted for a
- 10:17set of golf clubs, you appreciate the
- 10:19difference that correct measurements and
- 10:21adjustments make. And in this case of
- 10:23window treatments, you see the
- 10:25improvement of those adjustments almost
- 10:28immediately. The fabric itself is also
- 10:30important. A handsome wool or finely
- 10:32woven linen blend or another suitable
- 10:35textile can introduce texture, softness,
- 10:37and movement into the room. The lining
- 10:39can improve privacy, help control
- 10:41daylight, and give the fabric a more
- 10:43attractive drape. Regardless of the
- 10:46treatment you choose, the larger lesson
- 10:48remains the same. A better window
- 10:50treatment should improve the appearance
- 10:52of the room while meeting your needs for
- 10:54privacy, daylight, and comfort. Because
- 10:56you can't escape quality fabric cut to
- 10:59the wrong size and hung in the wrong
- 11:01place still looking wrong.
- 11:03Let's move on to rugs. A good area rug
- 11:06can make an enormous difference in a
- 11:07room. It brings color, pattern, and
- 11:09texture across a large portion of the
- 11:11floor. And when it's properly sized, it
- 11:14connects the surrounding furniture,
- 11:16making the entire arrangement feel more
- 11:18complete. This is also a category where
- 11:20spending more can introduce materials
- 11:23and craftsmanship that are noticeably
- 11:25different from the less expensive
- 11:26choices. But you need to understand what
- 11:29you're paying for. Two rugs can look
- 11:31almost identical online, yet be entirely
- 11:34different products. One might be hand
- 11:36knotted with individual knots tied into
- 11:38the woven foundation. Another might be
- 11:41hand tufted, where yarn is pushed
- 11:44through the backing material and secured
- 11:46with adhesive. Both can be described as
- 11:48handmade. Both can be attractive, but
- 11:50their construction affects how they age,
- 11:53whether they can be repaired, and
- 11:54typically what they cost. Hand knotted
- 11:57rugs require considerably more time and
- 11:59labor to produce. Because the individual
- 12:01knots are tied into the rug's
- 12:03foundation, a well-made example can
- 12:05often be repaired when damaged. With
- 12:07proper care, some remain in use for
- 12:09generations. That's part of what makes
- 12:11them worth investing in. Hand tufted
- 12:14rugs are generally quicker and less
- 12:16expensive to manufacture, but because
- 12:18they rely on adhesive to hold the yarn
- 12:21in place, the backing can eventually
- 12:23deteriorate, making certain repairs more
- 12:25difficult. That doesn't necessarily make
- 12:27them a poor choice if you expect to
- 12:29change the room's design in a few years
- 12:31or you don't need a rug intended to last
- 12:34for decades, a well-made hand tufted rug
- 12:36could serve you very well. The materials
- 12:39are another reason some rugs deserve a
- 12:41higher price. Wool, for example, has
- 12:43been used in fine rugs for generations.
- 12:46It can produce rich, beautiful colors,
- 12:48has a pleasing texture underfoot, and
- 12:50its fibers have a natural springiness
- 12:53that helps them recover after being
- 12:54stepped on. Those are qualities you can
- 12:56appreciate every time you walk across
- 12:58the room. But wool alone doesn't
- 13:00guarantee a superior rug. Pay attention
- 13:02to the pile, which is the part you walk
- 13:04on. A long, thick pile can feel soft and
- 13:07also be quite difficult to maintain in a
- 13:10busy living room. Furniture can also
- 13:12sink into it, making chairs harder to
- 13:14move. A shorter, more densely packed
- 13:17pile often provides a better balance of
- 13:19comfort and practicality. If you have a
- 13:21household with children or pets, a
- 13:23durable synthetic rug might be the more
- 13:25sensible option for you. Now, there's
- 13:27another mistake homeowners frequently
- 13:29make when purchasing rugs. They spend a
- 13:31sizable chunk of money on something
- 13:33striking and buy it too small. You end
- 13:36up with this exquisite rug sitting alone
- 13:39in the middle of the room, isolated like
- 13:41a leper, afraid to touch any of the
- 13:43surrounding furniture, and the entire
- 13:45seating arrangement looks disconnected.
- 13:47This is why it's smart to establish the
- 13:49correct dimensions before getting too
- 13:51excited about materials and
- 13:53craftsmanship. For living rooms, you'll
- 13:55generally begin with at least the front
- 13:57legs of the main seating resting on the
- 13:59rug. This visually connects the sofa and
- 14:02chairs, making them feel like one
- 14:03arrangement. In dining rooms, allow
- 14:06roughly 24 to 36 in beyond the table's
- 14:09edges, so chairs can be pulled out
- 14:11without catching on the rug. Before
- 14:13hitting the order button, mark the
- 14:15proposed dimensions on your floor with
- 14:17painter's tape. It's far more reliable
- 14:19than judging scale from a photograph
- 14:21taken in a staged living room. A
- 14:23thoughtfully selected rug can become one
- 14:25of the most attractive features of a
- 14:27room, and something you'll continue to
- 14:29enjoy for many years. Just make sure
- 14:31you've chosen the correct size before
- 14:33worrying about how many knots it
- 14:35contains. The fifth item is a signature
- 14:38lighting fixture. A good lighting
- 14:41fixture has two jobs. It should
- 14:43contribute something to the room when
- 14:44switched off, and when illuminated,
- 14:47produce light you actually want to live
- 14:49with. This is one of those upgrades
- 14:51where spending more can make a defining
- 14:53difference to a room's appearance. A
- 14:55well-designed chandelier can become the
- 14:57centerpiece of a dining room. An elegant
- 15:00floor lamp can bring character to an
- 15:01otherwise ordinary corner. And a pair of
- 15:05carefully selected wall sconces can make
- 15:07a plain wall feel much more
- 15:08sophisticated. These pieces can serve
- 15:11almost like works of art, introducing
- 15:14interesting shapes, rich materials, and
- 15:16craftsmanship that you can appreciate at
- 15:18all times of the day. And when the
- 15:20lights come on, they'll be able to
- 15:21change the atmosphere of the room
- 15:23entirely. However, there is a catch.
- 15:26There's always a catch. There are plenty
- 15:28of dramatic fixtures that look grand,
- 15:31yet fail miserably at providing pleasant
- 15:33illumination. A chandelier that shines
- 15:35directly into your eyes while you're
- 15:37seated or leaves much of the room poorly
- 15:39lit isn't a very successful upgrade. So,
- 15:42when shopping for a premium fixture, I'd
- 15:44pay attention to both its construction
- 15:46as well as the light it produces.
- 15:49Examine the metal work, glass, shades,
- 15:51and how securely everything is
- 15:53assembled. Where does the light shine
- 15:55when turned on? Is the bulb exposed in a
- 15:57way that creates uncomfortable glare?
- 16:00Can you dim the fixture to adjust the
- 16:02brightness? And if something fails
- 16:04several years from now, can the
- 16:05necessary parts be replaced? This is
- 16:08good ground to cover before making an
- 16:10expensive purchase. The bulbs themselves
- 16:13also deserve attention. For many
- 16:15residential spaces, a warm color
- 16:17temperature between 2,700 and 3,000
- 16:20Kelvin is a good starting point. Kelvin
- 16:22describes the color of the light. Lower
- 16:25numbers produce a warmer, more yellowish
- 16:27appearance, while higher numbers become
- 16:30cooler and more bluish-white. You'll
- 16:32also come across something called the
- 16:33color rendering index, or CRI for short.
- 16:37This tells you how accurately a light
- 16:39source displays colors compared to
- 16:41natural light on a scale that reaches
- 16:43100. A CRI of 90 or higher is a useful
- 16:46target, especially when you want
- 16:48artwork, wood finishes, and fabrics to
- 16:50display their colors faithfully.
- 16:52Even a stunning fixture can disappoint
- 16:55if it's the wrong size and installed in
- 16:57the wrong place. For example, over a
- 16:59dining table, a chandelier measuring 1/2
- 17:01to 2/3 the table's width is a useful
- 17:04rule of thumb. It's bottom is commonly
- 17:07positioned 30 to 36 in above the
- 17:10tabletop, depending on the ceiling
- 17:11height, fixture shape, and sightlines.
- 17:14Take note of what the chandelier is
- 17:15centered over. If the dining table isn't
- 17:18in the middle of the room, the
- 17:19chandelier generally shouldn't be
- 17:20centered in the room, either. It should
- 17:22align with the table. Otherwise, even an
- 17:25expensive fixture can look strangely
- 17:27misplaced. You may have a range of what
- 17:30you're willing to spend on the right
- 17:31light fixture, so keep this in mind.
- 17:33It's much better to have one carefully
- 17:36selected, properly positioned fixture
- 17:39that gives the room character and
- 17:40provides comfortable light than a more
- 17:42expensive one chosen simply because it
- 17:45photographs well. Number six is original
- 17:48or carefully selected artwork. There
- 17:50comes a point when filling an empty wall
- 17:52with something attractive stops being a
- 17:54satisfying way to choose art. You begin
- 17:57wanting something that means a little
- 17:59more, something you feel a genuine
- 18:01connection with. It could be an original
- 18:03painting, a limited edition print, or a
- 18:05vintage piece you stumbled upon and
- 18:07couldn't stop thinking about. The
- 18:09distinction is that you're responding to
- 18:11the artwork itself rather than searching
- 18:13for something in the right colors to
- 18:15occupy the wall. It's an opportunity to
- 18:18give your home more individuality and
- 18:20introduce something that reflects your
- 18:22interests, your tastes, and your
- 18:23experiences. Original artwork can also
- 18:25have physical qualities that are hard to
- 18:27reproduce in mass-produced decoration.
- 18:30Actual brushstrokes, layers of paint,
- 18:33and subtle textures that become more
- 18:35interesting the longer you live with the
- 18:37piece. The painting is just as enjoyable
- 18:39up close as it is from afar. Other
- 18:42times, the greatest significance that
- 18:44comes from it is the circumstances
- 18:46surrounding it. You remember where you
- 18:48found it, who created it, and what was
- 18:50happening in your life when you acquired
- 18:52it. Those memories give the piece more
- 18:55meaning beyond its appearance. In case
- 18:57this idea has crossed your mind, I
- 18:59wouldn't approach artwork primarily as
- 19:01an investment strategy. Some pieces
- 19:03increase in value, but many don't.
- 19:05Unless you're a very knowledgeable
- 19:07collector, the possibility of making
- 19:09money from a future sale is a poor
- 19:12reason to purchase something you don't
- 19:13particularly enjoy looking at. Choose
- 19:17work you want to live with, and of
- 19:18course, understand what you're buying.
- 19:21Consider its condition, size, and the
- 19:23materials used. If you're purchasing an
- 19:25original, ask about the artist and any
- 19:27available documentation of its history
- 19:30or authenticity. For a limited edition
- 19:32print, find out how many copies were
- 19:34produced and whether the piece is signed
- 19:36or numbered. Framing will also make a
- 19:39difference. A well-chosen frame should
- 19:41complement the artwork while helping it
- 19:43look appropriate within the room. For
- 19:45drawings, watercolors, and prints,
- 19:47archival framing can help prevent damage
- 19:49over time. Just as well, you'll probably
- 19:52want any sensitive works protected from
- 19:54excessive sunlight, which can cause
- 19:55fading. Before purchasing something for
- 19:58a specific wall, check the scale. A
- 20:00common recommendation is to hang artwork
- 20:03with its center around 57 in above the
- 20:05floor. That typically works out for a
- 20:08piece displayed on an otherwise empty
- 20:09wall. But above a sofa, bed, or console,
- 20:13its relationship with the furniture
- 20:14becomes more important. You can use
- 20:16painter's tape to mark the artwork's
- 20:18dimensions on the wall, then step back.
- 20:21Does it have enough presence? Does it
- 20:23overwhelm the furnishings? Does it look
- 20:24appropriately sized for the space? A
- 20:27carefully selected work can become one
- 20:29of the most cherished things in your
- 20:31home, and unlike a piece purchased
- 20:34merely to fill an empty wall, it can
- 20:36become something you appreciate more as
- 20:38the years go by. The seventh upgrade are
- 20:40better bathroom faucets and fittings.
- 20:43Not every worthwhile upgrade requires
- 20:45thousands of dollars. Sometimes a couple
- 20:48of hundred can make a noticeable
- 20:49difference. Bathroom faucets are a good
- 20:52example of that. Most builder-grade
- 20:54bathrooms come equipped with standard
- 20:55fixtures. They serve their purpose, but
- 20:57you can tell that not much thought was
- 20:59given to them. The faucet is something
- 21:01you see whenever you approach the vanity
- 21:03and physically interact with several
- 21:05times a day. It's a prominent item.
- 21:07Replacing a basic $60 faucet with a more
- 21:10carefully designed $250 model can make a
- 21:14noticeable difference. That upgraded
- 21:16model might have a more stately shape, a
- 21:19more artisan finished metal, or a handle
- 21:22with a satisfying weight and smooth
- 21:24precise movement. For a relatively
- 21:26manageable investment, you can introduce
- 21:29a noticeably better designed element
- 21:31into a room you use every day.
- 21:33Practicality will still need to be taken
- 21:35into account. Make sure the faucet is
- 21:37compatible with your existing sink, and
- 21:39check where the water will land inside
- 21:41the basin. An attractive fixture becomes
- 21:44much less enjoyable if you can't wash
- 21:45your hands without splashing water
- 21:47everywhere. I'd favor a reputable
- 21:50manufacturer that offers replacement
- 21:52parts, so a minor repair doesn't require
- 21:54purchasing another faucet. The same
- 21:57thinking applies to shower fittings. A
- 21:59well-designed shower head can improve
- 22:01the appearance of the bathroom, and
- 22:03while providing a more satisfying shower
- 22:05experience. In both of these cases,
- 22:08you're improving something you both see
- 22:10and use every day without taking on an
- 22:12entire bathroom renovation. The final
- 22:15upgrade, something people rarely think
- 22:17about replacing unless it's damaged,
- 22:19their interior doors. Most builder-grade
- 22:22homes have hollow-core doors. They're
- 22:24inexpensive, lightweight, and fulfill
- 22:26their basic purpose, separating one room
- 22:28from another. But, if you've spent time
- 22:30in an older, well-built home, you've
- 22:32probably noticed the doors feel
- 22:34different. There's substance to them.
- 22:36They have weight, move with more
- 22:38authority, and close with a satisfying
- 22:40sense of everything locking into place.
- 22:42You notice the difference whenever you
- 22:44use them, and replacing ordinary
- 22:46hollow-core doors with properly fitted
- 22:49solid-core ones can bring some of that
- 22:51character into a typical modern home.
- 22:54It's one of those upgrades that changes
- 22:56how a house feels, even if it isn't
- 22:57obvious in a photograph. There's a
- 22:59practical benefit as well, better sound
- 23:01control. A solid core door has a denser
- 23:04interior than a hollow core model, which
- 23:06can help reduce noise passing between
- 23:09rooms. That can be favored in a bedroom,
- 23:11home office, or media room where a
- 23:13little more privacy makes the spaces
- 23:15more comfortable to use. Despite the
- 23:17name, solid core doesn't mean the door
- 23:19needs to be entirely made of solid
- 23:21hardwood. Many use engineered wood or
- 23:23composite materials. As we discussed
- 23:26earlier with coffee tables, these
- 23:27materials can provide excellent
- 23:29stability making them less susceptible
- 23:31to changing shape as humidity fluctuates
- 23:34throughout the seasons. But the door
- 23:35itself is only part of the improvement.
- 23:38The hardware can also change the
- 23:39experience. Compare a lightweight,
- 23:41loosely fitted lever with one that's
- 23:43properly made. The better example feels
- 23:46secure in your hand, the movement is
- 23:47smooth, the latch engages cleanly, and
- 23:50nothing rattles when you release it. You
- 23:52don't have to lift the door slightly to
- 23:54close it or give it another shove
- 23:56because the latch didn't catch. It just
- 23:58works. Interior doors occupy a
- 24:00considerable amount of wall space,
- 24:02particularly in hallways where several
- 24:05are visible together. Their panel
- 24:07designs, proportions, finishes, and
- 24:09hardware all contribute to the
- 24:10architecture of the home. An ordinary
- 24:13flat door is nothing to write home
- 24:14about, but a well-proportioned panel
- 24:17design finished with attractive hardware
- 24:19can make an otherwise plain hallway feel
- 24:22more curated. The important thing is
- 24:24choosing something that belongs in the
- 24:26house. Imagine a hallway with simple
- 24:28traditional doors except for one
- 24:30expensive contemporary model with
- 24:32completely different detailing. It might
- 24:34look attractive on its own, but
- 24:35surrounded by the other doors, your
- 24:37guest might wonder if it leads to the
- 24:39Wizard of Oz. So, if you're planning to
- 24:41upgrade gradually, establish a
- 24:43consistent design before purchasing the
- 24:45first replacement. You don't need to
- 24:47change all of the doors at one time.
- 24:49Begin with the rooms where you'll
- 24:51appreciate the improvement the most,
- 24:53then follow the same general style as
- 24:54you continue. You're improving something
- 24:57you see throughout the home, something
- 24:58you physically interact with all the
- 25:00time, and something that can make
- 25:02individual rooms feel a little more
- 25:04private. The idea behind these choices
- 25:06is to become more thoughtful about where
- 25:08you spend your money and what you're
- 25:10receiving in return because spending
- 25:12more doesn't automatically mean buying
- 25:15something better. And even when
- 25:16something is exceptionally well-made, it
- 25:18still needs to be right for your home.
- 25:21Sometimes the additional investment
- 25:23brings greater comfort, better
- 25:25performance, or something that will last
- 25:27longer. Other times, it's the beauty of
- 25:29the design, the craftsmanship, or the
- 25:31character a particular piece brings into
- 25:34a room. It could just be the simple
- 25:36pleasure of owning something that you
- 25:37genuinely admire or enjoy using every
- 25:40day. These are all perfectly good
- 25:42reasons to invest in your home. So, as
- 25:44your budget grows, take a little more
- 25:46time to recognize where spending extra
- 25:49would make a meaningful difference. The
- 25:51motto is simple, accumulate good
- 25:54decisions. Those decisions are worth
- 25:56making carefully. If you like the video,
