  2. 0:05my guest this week is a filmmaker whose
  3. 0:06documentary The Red Pill explores her
  4. 0:09eye openening journey into the men's
  5. 0:11Rights Movement which is out in Select
  6. 0:13theaters right now Cassie J welcome to
  7. 0:15the Ruben report hello glad to be here
  8. 0:18I've had a lot of people that have
  9. 0:20wanted to make this happen this sitdown
  10. 0:23I suspect that no matter what we say
  11. 0:25over the next hour a certain amount of
  12. 0:27people are going to love it no matter
  13. 0:29what and a certain amount of people are
  14. 0:30going to hate it no matter what is that
  15. 0:32just part of talking about men's rights
  16. 0:35and feminism does that just come with
  17. 0:37the territory do you think uh yes
  18. 0:39definitely I mean men's rights
  19. 0:41especially uh just talking about men's
  20. 0:43issues gets a lot of uh feathers ruffled
  21. 0:46and that's partly why I wanted to make
  22. 0:48the film yeah so let's talk about you a
  23. 0:51little bit and your journey before we
  24. 0:53get into the film specifically uh so
  25. 0:55tell me a little about yourself were you
  26. 0:57always interested in men's rights when
  27. 0:59was your I know your evolution is partly
  28. 1:01what happened during the course of the
  29. 1:03film but uh you know just tell me a
  30. 1:06little bit about growing up and that
  31. 1:07kind of thing okay well I've I'm 30
  32. 1:09right now I started making films when I
  33. 1:11was 21 years old uh directing
  34. 1:13documentaries and I've always been
  35. 1:15interested in gender issues and
  36. 1:17sexuality uh so my first film was about
  37. 1:20sex education in America and it was
  38. 1:22called Daddy I do and that feature
  39. 1:25documentary really focused on women's
  40. 1:27rights and women's issues uh
  41. 1:29Reproductive Rights and single
  42. 1:31motherhood and my second feature film
  43. 1:33was about gay marriage called the the
  44. 1:36right to Love An American family and
  45. 1:39that was released in 2012 and had great
  46. 1:42response and positive reactions and then
  47. 1:45in 2013 I was done screening the right
  48. 1:48to love and I was looking for my next
  49. 1:51topic and I was toying around with a
  50. 1:53couple different uh film ideas one was
  51. 1:56about um the legalization of
  52. 1:58prostitution issue or do do
  53. 2:01criminalization and I was also looking
  54. 2:03at rape culture as being a possible
  55. 2:05topic for my next film and this was long
  56. 2:07before the hunting ground uh came around
  57. 2:10and while I was researching rape culture
  58. 2:13I came across the online men's rights
  59. 2:15movement and for about 10 years
  60. 2:18previously i' been a staunch feminist
  61. 2:21I'd been interested in gender issues and
  62. 2:24sexuality and I thought well what is
  63. 2:26this hidden corner of of the online
  64. 2:29communities and is is this the group of
  65. 2:32misogynists I've been hearing about that
  66. 2:33are perpetuating rape culture and so I
  67. 2:36embarked on this journey to make a film
  68. 2:38about the men's Rights Movement but from
  69. 2:40my feminist perspective yeah what did
  70. 2:43your feminist perspective like how would
  71. 2:46you uh summarize your version of
  72. 2:48feminism at least before you started
  73. 2:51this journey yeah uh well I I started
  74. 2:55calling myself a feminist when I was
  75. 2:56around 18 or 19 years old around 2004
  76. 2:592005
  77. 3:00and at the time I was living in Los
  78. 3:02Angeles and I when I started telling my
  79. 3:05friends that I was a feminist a lot of
  80. 3:06people were saying what you're a women
  81. 3:08hater you're you're not a lesbian you
  82. 3:10don't have hairy armpits and so I had
  83. 3:11that you know that kind of back then it
  84. 3:13was still that old mentality of thinking
  85. 3:16that feminists were uh these Butch
  86. 3:19lesbians kind of thing and the reason I
  87. 3:21became a feminist was because at the
  88. 3:23time I was acting in Los Angeles I moved
  89. 3:25to LA when I was 18 and started acting
  90. 3:28in a bunch of independent films and
  91. 3:30and I was very green and naive at the
  92. 3:32time and so I had a lot of instances
  93. 3:35where film producers would make advances
  94. 3:38on me and I felt like uh oh so is this
  95. 3:41my role in the world is just being this
  96. 3:44sexual object to
  97. 3:46be rather than being uplifted for my
  98. 3:49talents or my intelligence and and then
  99. 3:52a lot of the uh roles that I was going
  100. 3:53out for and acting where the hot blonde
  101. 3:57chick that dies in the first 10 minutes
  102. 3:59and uh so I was just fed up with you
  103. 4:01know this kind of U stereotypical role I
  104. 4:05was playing in in films and also it
  105. 4:07seems like in life and so so that's
  106. 4:10interesting let's pause there for a sec
  107. 4:11so somehow liberal Hollywood is what
  108. 4:14pushed you into feminism by its actual
  109. 4:18Judgment of women that's kind of
  110. 4:20interesting yeah yeah and I mean I think
  111. 4:23a lot of girls in La also feel
  112. 4:27objectified for being a woman and um and
  113. 4:29now with making the red pill I have
  114. 4:31different views on that but uh but yeah
  115. 4:34and also in the film industry it is uh
  116. 4:37the statistics on how many women are
  117. 4:39directors or producers or writers is you
  118. 4:41know there is a big gap between men and
  119. 4:43women in those positions so um so
  120. 4:46definitely liberal Hol Hollywood I think
  121. 4:48has uh just thinks a lot about women's
  122. 4:52rights and women's issues and I got you
  123. 4:54know wrapped up into that culture and
  124. 4:56and also at the time I should mention I
  125. 4:58started cuz 2004 2005 that was just when
  126. 5:02it was going or at least I was going
  127. 5:03from Myspace to Facebook and then later
  128. 5:05on Twitter came around and uh tumbler
  129. 5:08and so I think during this social media
  130. 5:11Evolution uh feminism and and what it
  131. 5:15was marketing as being a feminist being
  132. 5:18the movement for gender equality uh was
  133. 5:22kind of this easy pitch it's like of
  134. 5:23course everyone should be for gender
  135. 5:25equality and so so when originally
  136. 5:27people were saying how are you a
  137. 5:28feminist you're not a hater kind of
  138. 5:30thing and then and I was telling my
  139. 5:32friends that I was a feminist now fast
  140. 5:35forward to 2013 when I started looking
  141. 5:37at the men's Rights Movement all my
  142. 5:38friends who were confused of why I was a
  143. 5:41feminist now were more feminist than I
  144. 5:44was and uh so I've definitely seen this
  145. 5:47shift in uh people's acceptance of
  146. 5:50feminism and accepting the label so you
  147. 5:53were a card carrying feminist so to
  148. 5:55speak you find out about this men's
  149. 5:58Rights Movement which was largely just
  150. 5:59and online like what what was it that
  151. 6:01you first found out was this these on
  152. 6:03message boards or on where where were
  153. 6:05these people when this thing started now
  154. 6:07it's a little more it's gained a little
  155. 6:09more traction I think it's out there a
  156. 6:10little bit more but where was it at the
  157. 6:12time yeah so at the time it was March
  158. 6:142013 and like I said I was researching
  159. 6:17rape culture and then I stumbled across
  160. 6:19a website called AO for
  161. 6:21men.com and whenever the men's Rights
  162. 6:23Movement is talked about in mainstream
  163. 6:25media the the few times it is talked
  164. 6:27about they usually address a voice for
  165. 6:30men and their misogynistic rantings and
  166. 6:33this community of of men who hate women
  167. 6:36and and share their hatred with each
  168. 6:38other and and then uh all get riled up
  169. 6:40together in this online community of a
  170. 6:42voice for men right so that was the
  171. 6:44website that I initially found and I
  172. 6:48they definitely have some crude language
  173. 6:50a lot of swearing in there and a lot of
  174. 6:54uh talking points that I never heard of
  175. 6:55before so from my feminist perspective
  176. 6:58my walls were up and I was immediately
  177. 7:00thinking these are the misogynists I've
  178. 7:01been hearing about and uh and it
  179. 7:04terrified me and it took a couple months
  180. 7:06of me looking at some other documentary
  181. 7:09topics to explore and I just kept on
  182. 7:11coming back to the idea of the men's
  183. 7:13rights movement because I thought it was
  184. 7:15this Secret Under underground world that
  185. 7:18no one's ever explored and especially at
  186. 7:20that time not many people heard of of
  187. 7:22the men's Rights Movement so it really
  188. 7:24interested me so your intentions when
  189. 7:26you started were to look at this thing
  190. 7:29and you saw the language they were using
  191. 7:31in some of the over top overthe toop
  192. 7:33stuff and your intentions was sort of to
  193. 7:35expose it through a documentary but your
  194. 7:37feelings slowly changed the more that
  195. 7:39you got into it right yes yeah so when I
  196. 7:43initially started I I was thinking oh
  197. 7:45I'm going to get great footage on camera
  198. 7:46of these guys you know ranting about
  199. 7:48women or maybe even threatening me as
  200. 7:50I'm interviewing them and uh and I did
  201. 7:54feel like my protection while I was
  202. 7:55going to interview men's rights
  203. 7:56activists were was the camera as long as
  204. 7:59we're rolling I'm okay with getting hurt
  205. 8:01uh and
  206. 8:03then and you know also my having my crew
  207. 8:05there I did feel protected but at the
  208. 8:07same time I've been hearing that these
  209. 8:09men hate women that they harass women
  210. 8:10that they dox women uh so that's what I
  211. 8:12was expecting going into interviewing
  212. 8:14them that I was going to see you know
  213. 8:16capture this amazing footage of this
  214. 8:18yeah was it hard to find people to
  215. 8:19interview because I know the online
  216. 8:21especially in something like a topic
  217. 8:22like this the online World versus the
  218. 8:24actual World sometimes have very little
  219. 8:27connection with each other oh yeah I
  220. 8:29mean the online world is uh you might as
  221. 8:31well be Oz behind the curtain I mean
  222. 8:33it's a very the inanity oh my gosh I
  223. 8:37can't say that word they're enough how
  224. 8:39about that yeah yeah anonymity uh is
  225. 8:43comforting and people can act like
  226. 8:45whoever they want to behind a computer
  227. 8:47and uh and with the online men's Rights
  228. 8:50Movement I think um from what I've seen
  229. 8:55reading all the comments and the
  230. 8:56articles that they write uh they there
  231. 8:59is a lot of Truth to what they're saying
  232. 9:02although they do take a less PC approach
  233. 9:05and so that's what they're attacked for
  234. 9:07from mainstream media so what was like
  235. 9:09the first issue that you saw them
  236. 9:11talking about that you thought oh there
  237. 9:13might be some legitimacy
  238. 9:15here oh gosh well so for context I
  239. 9:19filmed Mr and feminists for a full year
  240. 9:23and I I interviewed 44
  241. 9:26people and uh each interview was
  242. 9:29different from the next personality
  243. 9:31types some drive very well and others I
  244. 9:34I just couldn't quite connect with uh
  245. 9:38but each interview I had we we went over
  246. 9:40all the issues and and my understanding
  247. 9:43of each issue evolved over that amount
  248. 9:44of time and also watching the footage
  249. 9:46back in while I was editing the film uh
  250. 9:49but domestic violence was a big one that
  251. 9:52really got me thinking um just the
  252. 9:55amount of support uh financial support
  253. 9:58emotional cultural support for female
  254. 10:01victims of domestic violence versus men
  255. 10:04uh is staggering and uh and then it one
  256. 10:09big uh turning point for me on my
  257. 10:12journey was actually putting the
  258. 10:13magnifying glass on my own feminist
  259. 10:15beliefs and realizing that I was
  260. 10:19unwilling to have compassion for a male
  261. 10:22victim of domestic violence cuz I did
  262. 10:23interview some male victims but if if it
  263. 10:27was a woman speaking and and she was
  264. 10:29saying the exact same thing that this
  265. 10:30male victim was saying then I would have
  266. 10:32had instant compassion without question
  267. 10:34or not blaming her for the choices she
  268. 10:36made whereas with these male victims I
  269. 10:39found myself saying well why did you get
  270. 10:41into this relationship with a woman who
  271. 10:43obviously had a lot of red flags going
  272. 10:45into it and why didn't you leave and uh
  273. 10:48so so yeah well how much of that is just
  274. 10:51male and woman stuff that's just
  275. 10:53hardwired into us like the idea that the
  276. 10:57man is supposed to be powerful the woman
  277. 10:59isn't now you have someone a man that's
  278. 11:01being abused and as you're saying it was
  279. 11:03sort of like built into you to have less
  280. 11:06compassion for them that's it's kind of
  281. 11:09tough to untie that right yeah and and
  282. 11:12so often within feminism we talk about
  283. 11:15double standards that if you call a a
  284. 11:17guy a player or cool if he dates a lot
  285. 11:20of girls and then a girl a sled and So
  286. 11:22within feminism we constantly talk about
  287. 11:24double standards but then I ended up
  288. 11:25seeing all these double standards within
  289. 11:28within myself when addressing men's
  290. 11:30issues and uh so as I was in
  291. 11:33interviewing the mr's men's rights
  292. 11:35activist I kept on trying to find ways
  293. 11:39to diminish their issues and I was first
  294. 11:43doing that myself and also in my video
  295. 11:45diaries which are included in the film
  296. 11:47uh but then once I got past the point of
  297. 11:50making excuses for these issues and
  298. 11:52really was there a Breaking Point I mean
  299. 11:53was there really a moment where you were
  300. 11:55like I I need to change my own outlook
  301. 11:57here well you know I think part of what
  302. 12:00gave me that breaking point was when I
  303. 12:02started to explain to my feminist
  304. 12:03friends men's issues that I really did
  305. 12:07think had they had the statistics to
  306. 12:09back them in the in the studies and um
  307. 12:12to support what the mras are saying and
  308. 12:14so then I would try to relay that
  309. 12:16message to my feminist friends and then
  310. 12:17I saw their uh unwillingness to listen
  311. 12:21and just be dismissive towards these
  312. 12:22issues and I realized I was doing that
  313. 12:24too but I did have a breaking point
  314. 12:26where where I started to think no we
  315. 12:28should for instance let's use an example
  316. 12:31with suicide 78% of all suicides around
  317. 12:34the world are men and the common
  318. 12:37reaction you'll get from feminists is
  319. 12:39saying that more women attempt suicide
  320. 12:43and I what I learned from the men's
  321. 12:45Rights Movement is they aren't trying to
  322. 12:48dismiss women's issues or they're not
  323. 12:49saying that no woman is ever raped or no
  324. 12:52women is ever abused by her spouse uh
  325. 12:54but they're trying to bring up issues
  326. 12:57that men face but when do that instantly
  327. 13:00feminists or even people who don't wear
  328. 13:03feminism on their sleeve but just are
  329. 13:04the kind of mainstream liberal you know
  330. 13:07right open seemingly open-minded person
  331. 13:10seemly open-minded yeah that seems to be
  332. 13:11a theme around a lot of the stuff I talk
  333. 13:13about yeah seemingly and so they'll have
  334. 13:15these uh quick like responses that are
  335. 13:20in essence diminishing what the men's
  336. 13:22issue is like saying well women more
  337. 13:24women attend but yes but still 78% of
  338. 13:27all suicides are men yeah um uh and then
  339. 13:29domestic violence one and three women
  340. 13:32are within their lifetime will be a
  341. 13:34victim of physical abuse by uh init
  342. 13:37partner and one in four men and that's
  343. 13:40from the CDC and it's very similar we
  344. 13:42always hear about the one in three women
  345. 13:44when talking about domestic violence but
  346. 13:46we rarely hear about men so so when you
  347. 13:49as when an MRA tries to bring up one and
  348. 13:51four men immediately feminists are
  349. 13:54saying yeah but more women okay but we
  350. 13:56talk about that and why why are we so
  351. 13:59and willing to address men's issues what
  352. 14:01does that tell us do you think about
  353. 14:02just our need to you know I always talk
  354. 14:05about the oppression Olympics here that
  355. 14:06everyone wants to be more grieved than
  356. 14:09someone else so that it seems like their
  357. 14:10problems are worse and then by being
  358. 14:12more grieved they're somehow better then
  359. 14:15because it sounds like that was a bit of
  360. 14:16the response you were getting from the
  361. 14:17feminist you weren't suddenly denying
  362. 14:19any of the problems that the feminist
  363. 14:21had right yeah uh but you were saying
  364. 14:23here's some other problems but for them
  365. 14:25it to acknowledge that would somehow
  366. 14:26diminish their own problems somehow I
  367. 14:29suppose in their mind and that that's
  368. 14:30kind of crazy uh way to have a whole
  369. 14:33conversation yeah and it and it does
  370. 14:35turn into the tip for Tat oppression
  371. 14:38Olympics who's who has it worse and
  372. 14:40that's what I found really fascinating
  373. 14:41about making the red pill is because
  374. 14:43mras aren't dismissing women's issues
  375. 14:46and all the M I spoke to said that they
  376. 14:48are for women's rights that's a big
  377. 14:49misconception that the mainstream media
  378. 14:51tries to paint about the men's rights
  379. 14:53movement that they're trying to turn
  380. 14:54back the clock on women's rights want
  381. 14:55them back in the kitchen barefoot and
  382. 14:57pregnant and that's not the case at all
  383. 14:59and I would actually say they're even
  384. 15:00going further into the gender equality
  385. 15:02discussion by adding men to the
  386. 15:04discussion and uh but what was so
  387. 15:07fascinating about the just the feminist
  388. 15:10ideology and and that was a word that I
  389. 15:12didn't connect with feminism many months
  390. 15:15into filming and when it finally clicked
  391. 15:16in my head that feminism is an ideology
  392. 15:19uh and I I would love for our culture to
  393. 15:23get to a point where we can distinguish
  394. 15:25between feminism and being for women's
  395. 15:28rights because they are two different
  396. 15:29things feminism is a movement with a
  397. 15:32belief system and um not all people who
  398. 15:35say there are feminists or not all
  399. 15:38people who are non-feminists are against
  400. 15:41women's rights you can be for women's
  401. 15:42rights without being a feminist right so
  402. 15:44do you think that the the ideology of
  403. 15:46feminism or the movement of feminism
  404. 15:49kind of lost its way over the years do
  405. 15:50you think it's possible I I've had a few
  406. 15:52guest on here that have said you know as
  407. 15:54things have gotten better for women and
  408. 15:56as there is equality for women you know
  409. 15:58you always have to find a new oppression
  410. 16:00for yourself according to this
  411. 16:02oppression Olympic scale so you have to
  412. 16:03suddenly be more offended by words if
  413. 16:05actions aren't happening to you and
  414. 16:07things like that so do you think the
  415. 16:08movement kind of just lost its
  416. 16:10way uh I mean I'll try to think back to
  417. 16:15my previous 10 years of being a feminist
  418. 16:17and how I saw it evolve and I don't
  419. 16:19think when I became a feminist around
  420. 16:212005 it wasn't
  421. 16:24as big as it is now and I think social
  422. 16:26media has a large part to do with that
  423. 16:29uh and it it's almost gotten to the
  424. 16:32point where I this is my personal
  425. 16:34opinion I don't think everyone agree
  426. 16:36with this but it almost becomes where
  427. 16:38people want to bully you into labor
  428. 16:40labeling yourself a feminist and I've
  429. 16:43heard some feminist women tell men uh
  430. 16:46say well are you for gender equality
  431. 16:48well yes I am well then you're a
  432. 16:49feminist
  433. 16:51and uh and it's almost like like a very
  434. 16:55if that's the only you know test you
  435. 16:57have to take that right are you for
  436. 16:59gender equality yes and here's your
  437. 17:01score you're feminist right uh it's so
  438. 17:03much deeper than that and and it is the
  439. 17:05politics of the movement it's the
  440. 17:06tactics it's the ideology that that
  441. 17:09women all women are oppressed by all men
  442. 17:11that we live in a patriarchy and that's
  443. 17:14discounting all the other factors
  444. 17:16including gender roles that large part
  445. 17:18of them are biologically related yeah um
  446. 17:23talk to me about the biologically
  447. 17:24related gender roles because there is
  448. 17:26something to that men evolve to be the
  449. 17:28hunters and women were the gatherers
  450. 17:30there there is something there that
  451. 17:31doesn't mean that obviously women can
  452. 17:34have virtually any job that a man can
  453. 17:36have and all that stuff but there there
  454. 17:38are some things that have just we've
  455. 17:40evolved to be different right and that
  456. 17:42that's okay yeah uh well I mean
  457. 17:44obviously the how you bear children is
  458. 17:48is the biggest difference and because
  459. 17:51women do carry the child and also
  460. 17:53breastfeed uh that does change how
  461. 17:56relationships
  462. 17:59the Dynamics of the home and how you
  463. 18:01operate the home and raise the kids up
  464. 18:03that does change who's decided to be the
  465. 18:05bread winner and if someone's going to
  466. 18:06stay home who is going to be that person
  467. 18:08and feminism has tried to rewrite the
  468. 18:12script that the reason men go to work
  469. 18:15and women stay home is because we have
  470. 18:17this idea of the gender wage Gap so
  471. 18:19therefore why should she be the brand
  472. 18:20winner if she's going to be make 77
  473. 18:22cents to a man's dollar that doesn't
  474. 18:23make sense so it's keeping her in the
  475. 18:25home because of this gender
  476. 18:27discrimination but as I'm sure you know
  477. 18:30the gender wage Gap is not I've had
  478. 18:32chrisa half summ on we've dived into it
  479. 18:35yeah right so how how would you actually
  480. 18:37Define feminism then I probably should
  481. 18:39have asked you this 10 minutes ago but
  482. 18:41what do you think the actual what would
  483. 18:43your definition of 2016 what does
  484. 18:45feminism mean oh oh gosh that's I'm
  485. 18:48really on yeah that's how would I Define
  486. 18:50feminism now with where my head is after
  487. 18:53making the red pill uh I I do believe it
  488. 18:57is an ideology
  489. 18:59um I I actually came out of a religion
  490. 19:02when I was in my teen years and uh
  491. 19:06spoiler
  492. 19:07alert uh with the red pill I also end up
  493. 19:11not being a feminist after making the
  494. 19:13red pill and they were very similar um
  495. 19:17experiences for me it it's I I call it
  496. 19:20the shedding process where it's a it
  497. 19:23happens over a long period of years for
  498. 19:26me but uh it's just resistance to one to
  499. 19:29hear the facts and apply that to your
  500. 19:32belief system that's been so comfortable
  501. 19:33for so long and that you've kind of
  502. 19:35blindly uh believed in and led you
  503. 19:37throughout your life and when you start
  504. 19:39questioning that it's a very scary
  505. 19:40experience so uh but as far as how I I
  506. 19:44Define feminism now I do think of it as
  507. 19:46a quasi religion because because the
  508. 19:51feminists that I've been seeing are
  509. 19:52unwilling to have a an intellectual
  510. 19:55discussion just based on the statistics
  511. 19:58and facts that don't fit within their
  512. 20:00belief system and uh so if if you
  513. 20:04believe that all women women are
  514. 20:06oppressed by all men then how could it
  515. 20:08be that women have more Reproductive
  516. 20:11Rights and more reproductive choices
  517. 20:13when having children and yet men could
  518. 20:16um be a victim of paternity fraud and
  519. 20:19paternity fraud is when you're raising a
  520. 20:21child that you later find out is not
  521. 20:23yours and there's no repercussion for a
  522. 20:25woman if she'd been lying to uh this man
  523. 20:27for 18 years saying it's his own kid and
  524. 20:30turns out it's not and the courts don't
  525. 20:32support him being uh you know any any
  526. 20:36kind of resolution to that uh I mean
  527. 20:39there's so many different issues that do
  528. 20:41attack men yeah on their gend and some
  529. 20:44of those things actually are systemic
  530. 20:47like when people talk about systemic
  531. 20:48racism there are things that are
  532. 20:49systemic I have a friend right now
  533. 20:51that's going through a divorce with the
  534. 20:53child custody battle and he's been the
  535. 20:55the primary bread winner for the entire
  536. 20:57time and at times his wife didn't work
  537. 20:59and didn't didn't have a lot of money
  538. 21:00and he provided for everybody but she's
  539. 21:02getting much more leniency related to
  540. 21:04the child right now that's actually
  541. 21:07systemic meaning that it's part of the
  542. 21:09system the legal system that she's
  543. 21:11getting benefits that that he doesn't as
  544. 21:13the man yes yeah and you know something
  545. 21:16when I was making the red pill that was
  546. 21:18very interesting is that feminists will
  547. 21:20also acknowledge custy issues uh for men
  548. 21:24but they will still say that it's
  549. 21:27discrimination against women so the
  550. 21:29reason that women get uh custody of the
  551. 21:33children about 80% of the time in all
  552. 21:35custody cases is because it's
  553. 21:38discrimination against women that women
  554. 21:40are expected to be the child caretaker
  555. 21:43and be the state so even if they get the
  556. 21:45child which in most cases is what they
  557. 21:47want that's still discrimination yes
  558. 21:50because that's the role that the woman
  559. 21:51is supposed to play or something yeah I
  560. 21:54just recently saw a video online about
  561. 21:57maternity leave versus patern leave and
  562. 21:59it was something around the world the
  563. 22:01average for maternity leave days paid
  564. 22:04maternity leave days was 107 days around
  565. 22:07the world and for men it was something
  566. 22:09like seven days and so they said that
  567. 22:12statistic and then immediately after
  568. 22:14they said this is discrimination against
  569. 22:16women that were expected to take care of
  570. 22:18the kids although the whole video was
  571. 22:20talking about how the US needed
  572. 22:22maternity leave and paternity leave yeah
  573. 22:25but it you do you see some of this stuff
  574. 22:27changing in a positive boy I have a
  575. 22:29friend who works at Facebook who had his
  576. 22:31wife had a kid and they basically like
  577. 22:34forced him to take paternity leave like
  578. 22:37she was okay handling it and she has a
  579. 22:38good family that was around helping her
  580. 22:40with the kid but they basically were
  581. 22:42like saying to my friend no no you take
  582. 22:44it too and he he did and he ended up
  583. 22:45working from home a lot and whatever but
  584. 22:47like so some of this stuff is sort of
  585. 22:49evening out in in some ways right uh
  586. 22:53yeah and something you don't have to
  587. 22:54agree
  588. 22:55with Well I this I'm going to steal a
  589. 22:58quote from Janice F mango who's a
  590. 23:00professor at Ottawa University she says
  591. 23:02that we need to strive towards equal
  592. 23:05opportunity not equal outcome and I
  593. 23:08think that you know applies with
  594. 23:10maternity and paternity leave that we
  595. 23:12should have equal opportunity for both
  596. 23:14parents uh and but we shouldn't force uh
  597. 23:19say um okay what's a good example uh we
  598. 23:24shouldn't Force girls to get into stem
  599. 23:26education so it equals to % or we
  600. 23:29shouldn't force that we have half uh
  601. 23:32female senators or um CEOs and all that
  602. 23:36we shouldn't Force any of that and and I
  603. 23:39think a lot of what mras and dissident
  604. 23:41feminists talk about is that women do
  605. 23:44have choices actually more choices than
  606. 23:46men do as far as if you want to stay at
  607. 23:48home with the kids or be a bread winner
  608. 23:50and women are using that choice and and
  609. 23:54so far it hasn't evened things out we
  610. 23:56don't have half the am amount of
  611. 23:58senators being women so and artificial
  612. 24:01quotas would just be artificial it
  613. 24:03wouldn't necessarily mean that that's
  614. 24:04exactly what women want to do or what
  615. 24:06men want to do it would just be it seems
  616. 24:09like it's fair it makes people kind of
  617. 24:10feel good but it doesn't necessarily
  618. 24:12mean that it's right or yeah or true you
  619. 24:15know something that's interesting is
  620. 24:16that Michael Moore who's another
  621. 24:18documentarian who's you know I I really
  622. 24:20do admire his work uh but he has a film
  623. 24:23festival in Flint Michigan and his last
  624. 24:24Film Festival he only accepted female d
  625. 24:28DED films and he said that he wanted to
  626. 24:31do that until Things become even with
  627. 24:33female director films with with men and
  628. 24:37how did that make you feel in your line
  629. 24:39of work well I do wonder if he told
  630. 24:42everyone that before they submitted
  631. 24:43their film because if all these guys
  632. 24:45were submitting their films and they had
  633. 24:46no chance of making to the film festival
  634. 24:48that'd be a little right but uh but yeah
  635. 24:51I think it's very interesting that there
  636. 24:53is this big push to help female
  637. 24:54filmmakers although you have to be on
  638. 24:56script because here I am a female
  639. 24:59filmmaker and I have not gotten the
  640. 25:01support that I've gotten from my other
  641. 25:02films because this is not the the red
  642. 25:05pill is not in line with the the
  643. 25:08feminist agenda you know so doing a film
  644. 25:10about feminism you're going to get a
  645. 25:12certain amount of mainstream support
  646. 25:14doing a film about gay rights you're
  647. 25:16going to get a certain amount of
  648. 25:16mainstream support this is the one where
  649. 25:20as you said you're ruffling some
  650. 25:21feathers so the mainstream support uh
  651. 25:24isn't as easy so to speak and I would
  652. 25:27add to that that that uh the amount of
  653. 25:30backlash that I've seen from making this
  654. 25:32film I've been it's been three and a
  655. 25:35half years now in the making and we just
  656. 25:36released it last week and because I
  657. 25:39haven't been seeing that support of me
  658. 25:41making this film I've started to realize
  659. 25:43that maybe feminism is just it's not
  660. 25:46about feminism isn't for women it's for
  661. 25:49feminism because if it were just about
  662. 25:52women and helping women then I would
  663. 25:54support right and and interestingly
  664. 25:57enough some some of the most uh vocal
  665. 25:59people disagreeing with my film or
  666. 26:02trying to actually wage a smear campaign
  667. 26:03against me are uh one major what I would
  668. 26:07call a a feminist troll blogger David
  669. 26:11frr he's a male feminist yeah and so
  670. 26:14it's just fascinating that uh you know
  671. 26:17and there's so many people feminists who
  672. 26:19support his attacks on me and it's just
  673. 26:22interesting gender reversal yeah
  674. 26:24absolutely all right so let's I want to
  675. 26:25back up the say that you said about the
  676. 26:26men's rights in the first place
  677. 26:28that you didn't find there to be that
  678. 26:30many misogynists or guys that really
  679. 26:32hated women or things like that you're
  680. 26:34not saying that there are none right
  681. 26:35like there obviously there obviously are
  682. 26:37some you're acknowledging that right
  683. 26:38like I haven't met them really so even
  684. 26:40when you were in the message boards and
  685. 26:41things I haven't really dived in that
  686. 26:43much to that kind of stuff but really
  687. 26:44there wasn't like just some level of
  688. 26:46guys that are just angry maybe angry at
  689. 26:50the world and they're misdirecting it on
  690. 26:51women or something else you really
  691. 26:53didn't find much of that there
  692. 26:54definitely troll commenters but there is
  693. 26:57policing happening on on a voice for men
  694. 26:59and the other men's rights websites and
  695. 27:01many people would call them out or or
  696. 27:02block them from the site and and here's
  697. 27:05a great example of what the mainstream
  698. 27:07media will do with um when reporting on
  699. 27:09the men reporting on the men's Rights
  700. 27:10Movement is uh Paul elim who's the
  701. 27:13founder of a voice for men uh there was
  702. 27:16someone who wrote a horrible comment on
  703. 27:18a voice for men and this was about two
  704. 27:19years ago and so and this was early on
  705. 27:22when they were just really starting to
  706. 27:24grow and I was I was filming them so
  707. 27:26Paul elim took this long
  708. 27:28horrible Comon that was bashing women
  709. 27:31and and promoting violence against women
  710. 27:33and he copied and pasted it into his
  711. 27:35article and said this is is absolutely
  712. 27:37unacceptable if I see any of this
  713. 27:39activity you're going to be blocked from
  714. 27:40the site and no questions asked so it
  715. 27:44was just one article that he wrote and
  716. 27:45copy and pasted and then feminist media
  717. 27:49took the comment that he quoted and said
  718. 27:51look at what M and a voice for men says
  719. 27:53about women and that was so common with
  720. 27:56all the articles I was Finding on voice
  721. 27:58and they do do a lot of satire and a lot
  722. 28:00of the headlines are clickbait to get
  723. 28:03you to think what what's that so for
  724. 28:05instance the headline would be when is
  725. 28:07it okay to punch your wife and but then
  726. 28:09you read within it and and they are
  727. 28:11trying to make a point all that you know
  728. 28:13with right so their tactics may be um
  729. 28:17not the best questionable but the
  730. 28:20content you're saying in an article like
  731. 28:21that so what so in an article like that
  732. 28:23when is it okay to hit your wife I would
  733. 28:25basically argue never I guess if she hit
  734. 28:27you you could hit her back
  735. 28:28but what in that type of article like
  736. 28:31what what are they going for well his
  737. 28:33point is that there is this double
  738. 28:35standard that uh you're not allowed to
  739. 28:37defend yourself if you're a boy or a man
  740. 28:40and women can hit men but you can't hit
  741. 28:42back and that's what the article talks
  742. 28:45about uh and here's a good example of my
  743. 28:49step nephew who's 15 years old who lives
  744. 28:51in Seattle just this past uh spring in
  745. 28:56at an assembly at a school all of the
  746. 28:58boys had to get off the bleachers go to
  747. 28:59the front of the stage and take a pledge
  748. 29:02that they would never hit a girl this is
  749. 29:04just a couple months ago yeah and so
  750. 29:07this double standard that boys can never
  751. 29:09hit girls but girls you know free reain
  752. 29:12they're they're weak a weird way it
  753. 29:13empowers girls to hit boys probably at
  754. 29:16that school because they know they're
  755. 29:17not going to be hit back yeah that's
  756. 29:20that's a little weird did you see this
  757. 29:21video maybe it's about two years ago on
  758. 29:23the New York City subway where this
  759. 29:25woman was really berading this guy just
  760. 29:28they didn't even know each other there's
  761. 29:29on the subway some other random person
  762. 29:31videotaping and she's screaming at him
  763. 29:32screaming at him screaming at him
  764. 29:34finally she hits him and he really was
  765. 29:36doing next to nothing and then he did
  766. 29:38hit her back basically knocked her out
  767. 29:39this was a big guy uh and I did a video
  768. 29:42on it and I basically said and I've
  769. 29:44evolved a little bit with all this stuff
  770. 29:45too but I basically was like don't hit
  771. 29:47her he shouldn't have hit her he
  772. 29:48shouldn't have hit her and I got a ton
  773. 29:50of for that and in retrospect I
  774. 29:53guess what I meant really was she hit
  775. 29:56you she shouldn't have done it but
  776. 29:58you're a big guy nothing good is going
  777. 30:00to come out of this I guess in a
  778. 30:03situation like that what do you think
  779. 30:04even because when there are obvious
  780. 30:06strength differences also now of course
  781. 30:08the strength difference could be the
  782. 30:09other way you could have a a very meager
  783. 30:10guy and a and a bodybuilding woman I
  784. 30:12mean all kinds of things um so I'm not
  785. 30:15even sure what my question is with that
  786. 30:16but but when you see instances like that
  787. 30:18where the power Dynamic doesn't quite
  788. 30:20make sense for what we think of for
  789. 30:22these things he's trapped he's trapped
  790. 30:24there's no easy answer people shouldn't
  791. 30:26hit other people that's that's the of it
  792. 30:28but the system allows for women to hit
  793. 30:30men without repercussions really and and
  794. 30:33men cannot hit women or you're going to
  795. 30:35jail and even just the accusation that a
  796. 30:37man hit a woman or so many times I heard
  797. 30:40from mras that there would be some kind
  798. 30:42of domestic violence situation in a home
  799. 30:45where a woman is going at a guy with a
  800. 30:47knife he grabs her arms to hold her back
  801. 30:50he leaves a couple bruises and he's the
  802. 30:51one spending the night in jail and going
  803. 30:53to court uh but and I have heard of so
  804. 30:57many of these cas of of women attacking
  805. 31:00men and and the strength issue uh that
  806. 31:04something else that needs to be brought
  807. 31:05into the discussion is that women use
  808. 31:06weapons more often and so there is an
  809. 31:10equalizer uh
  810. 31:12but it it's hard you know for that guy
  811. 31:14on the bus there's no easy answer and
  812. 31:17you know because of the culture we live
  813. 31:18in he's he you know he's going to be the
  814. 31:21one attack that he shouldn't have done
  815. 31:22that and right at the end I wanted I
  816. 31:25guess my point was just it sucks like
  817. 31:28she was abusing him verbally she
  818. 31:30shouldn't have hit him but it was like
  819. 31:32nothing good was going to come out of it
  820. 31:33and yet at the same time it's like she
  821. 31:35hit you like you can hit her back it it
  822. 31:38just feels weird I suppose but that sort
  823. 31:41of is how the world works yeah and I I
  824. 31:44didn't include this in my film because I
  825. 31:46couldn't find enough evidence to prove
  826. 31:48this but one of the stories that I heard
  827. 31:51while I was interviewing Mr is that uh
  828. 31:53Rihanna with her uh is it James Brown
  829. 31:57the ex Chris Brown Chris Brown
  830. 31:59yeah different guy different era unless
  831. 32:02you know
  832. 32:03something previous life yeah uh so
  833. 32:07apparently when it was first reported
  834. 32:09and this is just what an M told me I I
  835. 32:12tried to find evidence of this and I did
  836. 32:13find some articles supporting what this
  837. 32:16Mur said but uh that when it was first
  838. 32:18reported she was wailing on him as he
  839. 32:21was driving and she was attacking him he
  840. 32:23was swerving and then he took one punch
  841. 32:26knocked her out and then that was the
  842. 32:28infamous case of of her being beaten up
  843. 32:31and uh so I don't have enough evidence
  844. 32:34to say that's exactly true but if it
  845. 32:36were that I think that should be talked
  846. 32:38about that what if it wasn't just him
  847. 32:43slugging her out of nowhere what if she
  848. 32:45was wailing on him while he was driving
  849. 32:48he was sing all the place that were
  850. 32:49going to get into crash and so whose
  851. 32:52faults is it but you know the the
  852. 32:54women's movement and the feminist
  853. 32:56movement really lifted up Banna as this
  854. 32:59um example of a female victim of
  855. 33:00domestic violence and uh one of the mras
  856. 33:04that I inter she went back to him also
  857. 33:07right and then they did a video together
  858. 33:08and everything that was sort of about it
  859. 33:10and then a lot of feminists I guess were
  860. 33:12were against her or were angry at her
  861. 33:13for going back right yeah and that's the
  862. 33:16thing with domestic violence is there uh
  863. 33:18you know so many times you want to tell
  864. 33:19a person who's who's saying they're
  865. 33:21victim or is actually a victim that they
  866. 33:23need to make better choices get out of
  867. 33:25that situation uh but you know there's a
  868. 33:27lot more going on behind the domestic
  869. 33:30violence issue than just all men abusing
  870. 33:33women and nothing else no gray area
  871. 33:35there's a lot of great area
