- 0:00And they cut the alarm wires, the phone
- 0:02wires, everything, the camera wires as
- 0:04they went in.
- 0:05>> Mission Impossible stuff.
- 0:06>> Yeah. Yeah, it's legit. Legit this
- 0:08happened. Pretty much, right? I wish Tom
- 0:11Cruise did it, right? But no, Tom Cruise
- 0:13did not do this. And they got into the
- 0:16office. Somebody was
- 0:19planning this for some time.
- 0:20>> Ocean's 11, they had like an acrobat
- 0:22come in.
- 0:23>> I've never seen the Ocean's 11 movie, so
- 0:25I couldn't tell you. But long story
- 0:28short, now there's no there's no alarm,
- 0:30there's no cameras, there's no phone.
- 0:33Um, so he had all the snacks to himself.
- 0:35He could he he was there for like four
- 0:37or five hours all night. And he was he
- 0:40found the keys to the changer machines,
- 0:42right? He he took out all the he took
- 0:45out he took out all the uh quarters, but
- 0:48the front door was not a turn lock, it
- 0:51was a key lock from the inside. So he
- 0:54was unable to leave with the quarter
- 0:56buckets. Otherwise, he would have opened
- 0:58the front doors, loaded his car with the
- 1:00quarter buckets, too, and you know,
- 1:01carried on with his life. But he just
- 1:04took all the cash, went back through the
- 1:05ceiling. So he had to do more work. So
- 1:07he had to go back into the ceiling,
- 1:09crawl through the beams or whatever, go
- 1:12back into the AC unit, and leave. And
- 1:15that's how we figured out.
- 1:21>> All right, today we have with us Omar
- 1:23Khan,
- 1:25who is the owner and operator of Skyline
- 1:28Laundromats in Atlanta. And how many do
- 1:32you have right now, Omar?
- 1:35>> Uh, we have four.
- 1:37>> It's what I was thinking. Are you trying
- 1:38to do a fifth anytime soon or
- 1:41>> Always looking.
- 1:42>> Always looking.
- 1:43>> Always looking. So,
- 1:45um,
- 1:45it's my father and I that, you know, we
- 1:47run the business together. And um,
- 1:50obviously he started the business. I'm
- 1:52second generation into it.
- 1:54Um, grew up taking out quarters all my
- 1:57life.
- 1:58Um on the weekends I should say, right?
- 2:00Outside of school and weekends and um so
- 2:03it was always like a field trip. And
- 2:05then um but full-time almost 10 or 11 10
- 2:10plus years now that you know, I did
- 2:12corporate America for a couple of years
- 2:14after college and I
- 2:16you know, found a I found a few mentors
- 2:18along the way and um found a few
- 2:21opportunities as I was transitioning
- 2:24from corporate to a business world and
- 2:27and uh that's been, you know, a big uh
- 2:30piece of the puzzle of where I am today.
- 2:34>> How many team members do you have now?
- 2:37>> We're in the ballpark of 24 to 25.
- 2:41>> Uh between between the laundromats
- 2:45uh
- 2:45the drivers and then the the the
- 2:49overnight staff that does the processing
- 2:51for the pickup and delivery.
- 2:53>> And you mentioned your dad actually
- 2:55bought some of the property for Is that
- 2:57for all four laundromats that you guys
- 2:59own the real estate as well or is that
- 3:00just a few of them?
- 3:01>> No, the two that he did initially we we
- 3:04own the property. The other two that we
- 3:06got over the last several years um he
- 3:08leased them.
- 3:10>> Okay. Yeah. Yeah, we have we own two of
- 3:12ours and then we lease one of ours as
- 3:14well. But the one that um that we lease
- 3:16out it's been really good too and we
- 3:18like our landlords and all that. So it's
- 3:19it's been okay, but you're fully
- 3:22attended at
- 3:23>> Good.
- 3:23>> Yeah, we're sorry. I I was just going to
- 3:25say that we
- 3:27both have perks, right? Owning
- 3:28properties is obviously it's good and
- 3:31it's a different type of uh pride and uh
- 3:34uh different type of you know, you it's
- 3:36a different vision, but it comes with
- 3:38[snorts] a lot of responsibility, right?
- 3:39Parking lot goes bad, you got potholes,
- 3:42you got to redo a whole parking lot, you
- 3:44know, 45, 50,000 depending on the size,
- 3:47where you are, what city you're in,
- 3:48right? So
- 3:514 years, 5 years ago we redid two of our
- 3:53parking lots that we own. It was It was
- 3:56not cheap, right? But now, 5 years
- 3:58later, we're in the midst of
- 4:02getting them resealed and repainted and
- 4:05a new coating, right? Especially with
- 4:07the World Cup coming in. We're like,
- 4:08"Hey, let's just go ahead and do it."
- 4:10But it's expensive, right? So, they
- 4:13started yesterday, actually. So,
- 4:16we're in the middle of that, right? So,
- 4:18it's got to deal with that kind of
- 4:19stuff. And then with our the two
- 4:21properties that we lease,
- 4:23um there was
- 4:25not part of the plan, but we got lucky
- 4:27with both the landlords
- 4:29redoing both of our parking lots this
- 4:31year alone, just in this first half,
- 4:33first quarter of this year. So, it's
- 4:35kind of, you know, up to date and
- 4:37good-looking, good good for the brand,
- 4:38good for the, you know, good for the
- 4:40business. So,
- 4:41um excited about that.
- 4:44>> It feels so good to have that done, and
- 4:45then you know, it's it's good for
- 4:47another like 5 years or so, and
- 4:50we uh I was going to say the same thing
- 4:52is that, you know, owning the property
- 4:53is great, but then like we just
- 4:54recently, in fact, this week we had to
- 4:56close for a day because uh
- 4:58we had a water line
- 5:01uh leak in between the building and the
- 5:02main line, I guess. I don't know how you
- 5:03say that, but
- 5:05but yeah, it was a big, you know,
- 5:06$10,000
- 5:08repair, and we had to shut down the
- 5:10store for half a day.
- 5:11>> For
- 5:12And for one of the laundromats where
- 5:14it's a big parking lot because we're in
- 5:16a center, right?
- 5:18Um and it's a old center,
- 5:20um the underground pipes are cast iron,
- 5:24right? Obviously, I would have never
- 5:26known that. I I've been dealing with
- 5:28this for the last 8 years, right? About
- 5:313 years ago, 4 years ago, we had to be
- 5:33shut down for 2 weeks because the whole
- 5:35parking not the whole, but there was
- 5:37like a big section of the parking lot
- 5:38that they had to dig up because it kept
- 5:40backing up, and everything just kept
- 5:42backing up into our lint trap, into the
- 5:44laundromats, and no one else was
- 5:46affected because they're just non-water.
- 5:49They're only using bathrooms for their
- 5:50businesses. They're fine. But for us, we
- 5:52were down for literally 14 days. It was
- 5:55It was brutal. I was not happy. But
- 5:58came, you know, it it is what it is. You
- 6:00just ride out the storm. And there's no
- 6:02makeup for it. There's no makeup
- 6:04business. There's no insurance claim on
- 6:06it.
- 6:07Luckily, landlord took care of it at the
- 6:09time. It was our previous landlord. But
- 6:13still, like, you know, losses a loss.
- 6:15And you just got to ride it out.
- 6:17>> Yeah.
- 6:19Yeah, that's it's brutal. It's brutal.
- 6:22Are you fully attended at all for your
- 6:24locations?
- 6:24>> Yes. Yes.
- 6:26>> All four locations are fully attended.
- 6:28>> Do you still have a few open 24/7?
- 6:31>> I have two.
- 6:32Two 24/7s and then and they have a night
- 6:35attendant as well.
- 6:36>> Okay.
- 6:37What revenue mix do you think
- 6:41you're doing as far as and you can just
- 6:44give me percentages, but I know for for
- 6:46us, we did and some of the listeners may
- 6:49have heard these numbers before, but we
- 6:51did about 2.5 million in 2025 top line
- 6:54revenue for our three stores.
- 6:56And then of that revenue, about 70%
- 7:00was self-serve. And then the other 30%
- 7:03was wash, dry, fold. And that includes
- 7:06some of our like larger commercial
- 7:08accounts in that in that 30%.
- 7:11Um
- 7:12but I know you are more into delivery
- 7:14than than we are. At least I think you
- 7:15were last time I talked to you. Do you
- 7:17know what kind of like the revenue
- 7:19percentage like
- 7:20>> We're starting to out the pickup and
- 7:22delivery is starting to outgrow
- 7:25the like if I for I do we process the
- 7:28pickup and delivery from from from one
- 7:30location only, right? So, if I were to
- 7:33just compare from that location to
- 7:35pickup and delivery, my pickup and
- 7:37delivery numbers are starting to outgrow
- 7:39my self-service business.
- 7:41>> Wow. That's incredible.
- 7:43>> Right?
- 7:43Yeah.
- 7:44>> That's big numbers.
- 7:46>> It is. It is. Right?
- 7:49Um so, obviously we want our
- 7:51self-service to grow as well. We want
- 7:53our
- 7:54wash, dry, fold to grow as well.
- 7:57Um but obviously we have to make some
- 7:58modifications for that to happen, right?
- 8:00In the evening or later at night when
- 8:03the ladies are processing all the orders
- 8:05and then there's less washer and dryers
- 8:06available for customers, then you tend
- 8:08to run them away.
- 8:10Um which has been happening over the
- 8:12years, right? Unfortunately. But now
- 8:15we're at the point where we have um some
- 8:18storage behind the laundromat and we're
- 8:20just going to turn that into a
- 8:22production facility. I wish I had done
- 8:24that 5 years ago, right? But now we're
- 8:26at the point I'm going to have to
- 8:28turn my back storage space into a full
- 8:31production facility. That's [snorts] at
- 8:33least 80% of my operations move to the
- 8:35back. If there's a few machines in the
- 8:37front being, you know, used, it's fine.
- 8:38But at least majority of the operations
- 8:40will move to the back eventually,
- 8:41sometime this year. So, once that
- 8:44happens, then hopefully we'll um then
- 8:46the goal is to maybe even turn that
- 8:48laundromat into 24 hours. So, now the
- 8:51production's in the back, hire a front
- 8:53night attendant, then we'll be able to
- 8:56grow our, you know, night time, evening
- 8:58time, night time business back as well.
- 9:00So, it's it's all thoughts right now.
- 9:03Haven't really come to a conclusion of
- 9:05what's going to happen besides we are
- 9:07going to move everything to the back.
- 9:09>> And we've been doing the coin sell thing
- 9:11for about 10 years. So, just the second
- 9:13half of it, I've probably seen at least
- 9:16five of my customers open a processing
- 9:18facility that is just dedicated to
- 9:22commercial accounts and wash, dry, fold
- 9:25orders.
- 9:26And it's not open to the public. It's
- 9:28just an area that they do everything
- 9:32that's not, you know, what the basic
- 9:34laundromat is. When you think about that
- 9:36as a business model, I think people hear
- 9:38that
- 9:39and I've had people try and open that
- 9:42without the laundromats first
- 9:44and it never works. I've never seen that
- 9:46work without the revenue. Right? And so
- 9:49like when you have the revenue and you
- 9:52have the demand
- 9:54then you open the supply to supply the
- 9:56demand. You open the the processing
- 9:58facility. Versus, you know, anyone I've
- 10:01seen do it that way that has multiple
- 10:03laundromats and opens a processing
- 10:04facility, I've seen that succeed. But
- 10:07then I've had a few people that I've
- 10:08seen them do the opposite where they
- 10:10they're like, "I don't want a
- 10:11laundromat open to the public. I just
- 10:13want to do
- 10:14um you know, wash, dry, fold, and
- 10:17delivery. I just want to have a
- 10:18processing facility."
- 10:21The demand for that is is comes along a
- 10:23little slower, right? And the customer
- 10:25acquisition costs are a little higher
- 10:27and all that. And so uh
- 10:29if you try and create that supply before
- 10:32the demand, I've not seen that work. But
- 10:34it's interesting to hear that um yet
- 10:36another one of our customers is doing a
- 10:39processing facility, which I think is
- 10:41great cuz it just shows, you know, that
- 10:43your business is going well and that
- 10:44you've got more demand than what you can
- 10:47supply. And like you said, you don't
- 10:48want to hurt your your self-serve
- 10:49numbers um
- 10:51by running them off, which I know is an
- 10:53issue.
- 10:53>> I was I was going to say anyone that is
- 10:55looking to get into that self-service /
- 10:59pick up and delivery space, right?
- 11:02Um
- 11:03or pick up and delivery space only, then
- 11:05it's a different story. Then of course
- 11:06you look for a warehouse type setting or
- 11:09a place where you don't open to public.
- 11:10It can be behind a center. You're You're
- 11:12not going to be street facing and and,
- 11:15you know, you can run a pick up and
- 11:16delivery facility. But if you're trying
- 11:18to do both, self-service and pick up and
- 11:21delivery obviously it's harder, but you
- 11:25want to try to find a space where you
- 11:27can kind of have both
- 11:30um
- 11:31both things in one space but divided.
- 11:34That way you're only paying one rent,
- 11:37right? Or you own the property.
- 11:39Obviously, it gets a little expensive or
- 11:42it gets into your profits if you have to
- 11:45your Let's say you're renting a
- 11:46laundromat and now you're outgrown your
- 11:49pickup and deliveries. Like if I where
- 11:51I'm at right now, if it was a smaller
- 11:53space and if I was outgrowing my
- 11:55self-service and I have to go rent
- 11:57another space to do pickup and delivery
- 12:00in a whole different facility,
- 12:03I'd think twice to do the business,
- 12:05right? Until unless [snorts] you're
- 12:08doing really big numbers, like really
- 12:11ridiculously big numbers, like
- 12:12six-figure type business numbers and
- 12:15multiple six figures, then of course,
- 12:18then it's worth it, right?
- 12:19>> I I'm I'm a little blessed where where
- 12:21my laundromat is or my pickup and
- 12:23delivery is, I can
- 12:25behind the wall I have some square
- 12:27footage. I can, you know, put some
- 12:29machines there and not go anywhere else
- 12:31and pay, you know, another five, six,
- 12:33seven, eight thousand dollar rent,
- 12:35right? I'm already paying for one space
- 12:37and I can now do both things, right? Was
- 12:39it part of the plan eight years ago when
- 12:41I bought this laundromat? No. But it,
- 12:44you know, it worked out. So anyone in
- 12:46the future that is looking for a
- 12:47laundromat {slash} self-service {slash}
- 12:50pickup and delivery space, then and if
- 12:52you're trying to go into a 2,500 square
- 12:55foot space or 3,000 square foot space,
- 12:57you can manage but you're going to have
- 12:59to put in a lot of less machines to have
- 13:01a separate dedicated
- 13:04pickup and delivery space, right? But
- 13:06then if you have the option to go 4,000
- 13:09or 5,000 square feet space and you can,
- 13:11you know, dedicate some of that just for
- 13:13pickup and delivery, then you'll be
- 13:15comfortable to grow and you'll even
- 13:18outgrow that space one day, too,
- 13:19hopefully. But they'll just have to plan
- 13:21accordingly.
- 13:22>> I was talking to Sharon Brinks about
- 13:24this on our last episode and I was
- 13:27telling her how, you know, her stores
- 13:29look so nice and it's got our little
- 13:30point of sale system there and all that.
- 13:32And
- 13:33she had based that store on
- 13:36Delaware, but the biggest difference is
- 13:38that Delaware has like this kind of
- 13:39space in the back where you can store
- 13:40all the soaps and the vending and the
- 13:44you know, and then it's got more storage
- 13:46for finished orders. And I was
- 13:48complimenting her on her on I mean, her
- 13:51laundromat does look amazing. She was
- 13:52like, "Yeah, but I wish I had gotten
- 13:54more space
- 13:56for the processing, for the storage."
- 13:59And I think that that's pretty
- 14:00consistent. I mean, we have a a 5,000
- 14:02square foot facility and
- 14:05I think you need to dedicate at least
- 14:061,000 square feet to the wash, dry, fold
- 14:09and the
- 14:10little office and the processing and the
- 14:12I mean
- 14:13um so
- 14:15yeah, and and I think
- 14:17I mean, that was the third one we did,
- 14:19right? So, that was the one we had kind
- 14:20of learned that yeah, you need to
- 14:21dedicate more space to that than you
- 14:23think. And in the in the other one, the
- 14:25one that we lease, we had like a
- 14:28a dog grooming place next to us and we
- 14:31got that space when, you know, and then
- 14:33we had like a different So, we ended up
- 14:34just getting a
- 14:35like a dish every time there would be a
- 14:37business next to us, we would just grow
- 14:39bigger and bigger.
- 14:41Um you had something similar like that,
- 14:43right?
- 14:43>> Speaking of a dog grooming, I want to
- 14:46set up a animal station. Um
- 14:49uh in one of my Yeah, I'm thinking about
- 14:53it. It's part of the It's It's in my
- 14:54pipeline. I think once I'm done setting
- 14:56up my production space
- 14:58um and if I stumble across another
- 15:00laundromat opportunity, of course I'm
- 15:01going to jump on that first. But um in
- 15:04one of my existing stores, I have space
- 15:06to put a animal washing station. So,
- 15:10um that's something that I've been
- 15:11really hardly think like really
- 15:14um thinking about for the last maybe 6
- 15:16months. Like if I did it, how would I do
- 15:18it? What would I do? And where would
- 15:20what it? And all the logistics. So, it's
- 15:22all in my head right now. Haven't put it
- 15:24on pen and paper, but that's something
- 15:27I'm really considering.
- 15:28>> Well, logistics is something that a lot
- 15:30of people don't think a lot about, and
- 15:33obviously, as you scale and as you get
- 15:37years under your belt, you do kind of
- 15:39figure out that there is kind of this
- 15:41workflow through each
- 15:44area of the business. And I was hoping
- 15:46you could tell us a little bit about
- 15:47your workflow for the wash, dry, fold,
- 15:50and for any commercial accounts, and
- 15:53kind of how that works with the
- 15:55attendance, and you know, how do they
- 15:57utilize the the software and the
- 15:59hardware that you have there?
- 16:01>> With the wash, dry, fold POS system?
- 16:03>> Yeah.
- 16:04>> Um yeah, so I'm a big advocate of the
- 16:07wash, dry, fold POS, right? Now, of
- 16:09course,
- 16:10there's a lot of great softwares out
- 16:11there now, and they're all doing their
- 16:14own, you know, part, but I'm
- 16:16I'm a die-hard fan of
- 16:19um of your system,
- 16:20and
- 16:21I think we're maybe 4 years plus now, I
- 16:25think, if I'm not mistaken, on the
- 16:26system. So, I have two of your new
- 16:27registers and two of the older ones, but
- 16:30it's working fine right now.
- 16:32>> Good.
- 16:32>> And um and my employees love it, right?
- 16:35Initially, when I first got it, one of
- 16:36my employees like, "I'm going to quit."
- 16:38Cuz we were going from Clover to this.
- 16:40"I don't want a new system, and blah
- 16:41blah blah." And I was like, "Just give
- 16:44it give it give give it a week. You're
- 16:46going to be" And my Hispanic employee,
- 16:48who, you know, speaks a little English,
- 16:51not too much, was training the American
- 16:53employee.
- 16:54>> Oh my goodness. That's awesome.
- 16:55>> Three days three days into it. I was so
- 16:58excited. I was like, "Thank God."
- 16:59Because she's one of our favorite She's
- 17:00still is, you know, one of our best. And
- 17:03um and she learned it very fast. And um
- 17:07and and and the system does great,
- 17:09right? It's helped, especially with
- 17:11having a credit card on file and
- 17:14allowing that for your residential or
- 17:16commercial customers to have that on
- 17:18file and you can be like, "Hey, just
- 17:19drop it off and we'll you know, we'll
- 17:21bill it to your card
- 17:23and
- 17:24so that that's been very
- 17:27successful I would say. I don't know how
- 17:29many you know, time I employees are
- 17:31actually using it for the customers but
- 17:34time to time when I do see that it it's
- 17:36it's good because then customers are
- 17:38happy. They just drop it off and they
- 17:39walk off. Right? They don't have to
- 17:41worry about it. Especially our old
- 17:43customers that has been with us for a
- 17:45long time.
- 17:47And and and then the and the other good
- 17:49part is that
- 17:51it's a one customer base, right? So now
- 17:53I have customers that can go from before
- 17:55my laundromat were branded differently.
- 17:57So now all of them are branded same.
- 18:00We have the one POS system.
- 18:03My card systems I wanted to be one. I
- 18:06couldn't do one card system
- 18:07unfortunately.
- 18:09The loyalty card system for the washers
- 18:11and dryers. So that
- 18:14I'm a little bummed out but when it
- 18:15comes to the the POS system, one brand
- 18:18of the laundromats has really helped
- 18:20customers kind of have the liberty to go
- 18:23from you know, one location to another
- 18:26and their information's there. You know,
- 18:28everything gets labeled the same way,
- 18:31printed the same way. So that's been
- 18:33rewarding for sure.
- 18:35>> I appreciate you saying that and and
- 18:37we've really enjoyed having you as a
- 18:39as an advocate for us and we're always
- 18:42Oh, Brian told me to tell you that he
- 18:43did not forget about your feature
- 18:45request and he is working on it. The
- 18:47alphabetical sorting thing. Yes, so
- 18:49>> I was wait I I was going to send him an
- 18:51a friendly email reminder. You know,
- 18:55I I I've I've told the story many times
- 18:57and I'll say this on the podcast too.
- 18:58And it may not happen every time for
- 19:00anybody that will try to do this, right?
- 19:02But I think I got lucky. It was my first
- 19:05second conference in my laundromat
- 19:07world.
- 19:09I was at the it was
- 19:12not called the Excellence, it was called
- 19:13the Elevate conference that was at the
- 19:16Huntington Beach, right? So, we were
- 19:19there and it was some feature. I asked
- 19:23um Brian before going to bed. Like, we
- 19:25were in the lobby, we were about to go
- 19:27to bed. I was like, you know, Brian, if
- 19:29this if your POS system had this one
- 19:31feature at that time, it was early on, I
- 19:33think it would be like really nice and
- 19:34helpful.
- 19:36And I just left it at that. I didn't
- 19:37think too much of it. I thought it might
- 19:38be a couple of months, maybe 6 months
- 19:40until I, you know, it'll happen, but
- 19:42that was it.
- 19:43He comes down the next morning at
- 19:45breakfast and he taps me on my shoulder.
- 19:46He's like, "Omar, the feature's already
- 19:48in testing." I'm like, "I just told you
- 19:50like 12 hours ago." You know, and I'm
- 19:53thinking, you know, he might have some
- 19:54developer that's in out of the country
- 19:56that's going to be doing it. No, he I
- 19:58don't know how long he stayed up, but he
- 19:59stayed up, he put it in works, and
- 20:03um and the next morning it was already
- 20:05in testing. By the time I think I was
- 20:06back in Atlanta, if not the following
- 20:08week, it was it was in the POS. And
- 20:11literally that one
- 20:13um service from Brian has
- 20:17kept me in the door till this day. That
- 20:21one act, you know. So, when I told him
- 20:24about this feature, I was like, with the
- 20:25feature that I told him last week at the
- 20:27conference, I was like, "I know you
- 20:29won't do it tonight, but if you can do
- 20:31this soon, it'll be great."
- 20:33>> [laughter]
- 20:33>> Just like last time, I'd like this in 12
- 20:35hours, please.
- 20:36>> 12 hours, please.
- 20:38>> [laughter]
- 20:38>> But yeah, that one that one act of his,
- 20:41you know, um
- 20:43has kept me in the door.
- 20:45And I wish there were other vendors that
- 20:47would not I'm not saying a 12-hour time
- 20:49frame, but, you know, [snorts] act fast
- 20:51like that, that'd be nice.
- 20:54>> You know, I think one thing that's
- 20:55always been important to us is that we
- 20:58are solving real problems for real
- 20:59people. And like this is this is not a
- 21:01tool that's going to
- 21:03revolutionize the world or some crazy
- 21:06thing. This is like, "No, this is for
- 21:07laundromat owners so that they can save
- 21:09time and like make more money and like
- 21:11have an efficient, well-run business."
- 21:13And
- 21:15>> that's that's what we build and Brian
- 21:18has always been uh for one, he's
- 21:20incredibly a fast developer and we now
- 21:22have
- 21:24three other developers um as well. Um
- 21:27two other full-time developers that are
- 21:29um
- 21:30uh developing just as fast with the AI
- 21:33tools now you can develop even faster.
- 21:35>> Sure.
- 21:35>> Um so we're
- 21:37we're trying to kind of uh
- 21:39accelerate that that I guess you call it
- 21:41product velocity, but um
- 21:43but yeah, I mean we're always trying to
- 21:45to do new features and we always build
- 21:47features that people actually ask for
- 21:49instead of like the features that are
- 21:51just kind of like
- 21:52who knows maybe it'll work or maybe
- 21:54it'll help one of these days, but um
- 21:57no, I appreciate you saying that about
- 21:58Brian and I I know that um
- 22:01uh we've really enjoyed your feature
- 22:03requests. They're always good
- 22:04suggestions. So, you know, to
- 22:07to give you the credit where credit's
- 22:08due
- 22:09we do have people ask for ridiculous
- 22:11stuff and we just say no, we're not
- 22:12going to build that.
- 22:14But like if it's like an actual
- 22:15laundromat owner who actually needs
- 22:17something real, we're like, "Yeah, that
- 22:19makes perfect sense." Because if it
- 22:21benefits you, it's going to benefit a
- 22:22lot of other people.
- 22:23>> For sure.
- 22:24>> Versus like I've literally had people
- 22:25that have never owned a laundromat
- 22:28and they don't own the system be like,
- 22:29"Well, can you build this?"
- 22:31And I I it's like I don't know how to
- 22:32tell you this, but that's a terrible
- 22:33idea. Like no one's going to use that if
- 22:35we do build it, you know what I mean?
- 22:37So, it's like we definitely the the
- 22:41if you ask for something that's
- 22:42valuable, we will build it. Not always
- 22:45in 12 hours, but
- 22:46>> And of course of course alongside Brian,
- 22:48you have been an essential part of this
- 22:50uh
- 22:51uh relationship as well and then along
- 22:53with your one of your workers um Chelsea
- 22:55and I've told her this a hundred times.
- 22:57Yeah, she's she's she's a gem and uh
- 23:00>> She is.
- 23:01>> she's amazing. So anyways, um but yeah,
- 23:04so the system is great. Anybody that's
- 23:07looking for a POS, you know, definitely
- 23:09check out WDF.
- 23:11>> [laughter]
- 23:12>> I really appreciate you saying that. It
- 23:13was so funny when we were at the last
- 23:15clean show, Chelsea was like a
- 23:17celebrity. Like the people that I sold
- 23:19systems to, they would just walk right
- 23:21past me and right to Chelsea. We love
- 23:25Chelsea. It's just so fun.
- 23:27>> Yeah.
- 23:28I told her I was like the next time I
- 23:30come to is it Ken- Ken- Kentucky, right?
- 23:33I was like
- 23:33Kentucky. I'm going to come horseback
- 23:35riding. So.
- 23:36>> Yeah, that's she'll do it, too. She's
- 23:40She's She's amazing.
- 23:41>> That's good.
- 23:42>> So you mentioned that you've you tried
- 23:44to have the same coinless uh systems,
- 23:49the same card systems, loyalty card
- 23:50systems.
- 23:51Uh do you have two CCI right now and
- 23:54then two something else or tell me what
- 23:55the mix is?
- 23:56>> Yeah, two CCI. Um one is a hybrid store
- 24:01with Laundry Works. And then [snorts]
- 24:03I have one that's quarter only. And here
- 24:07in the next couple of months, I'm going
- 24:09to I just have to finish second That
- 24:11one's That store has been like a partial
- 24:13retool over the last um few years. My
- 24:15other three laundry mats are completely
- 24:17retooled in the last like five years.
- 24:20Um and then this one's just been We've
- 24:22been partially retooling. So we're just
- 24:23going to finish the whole retool and add
- 24:25a card system. And um then I just got to
- 24:28make a hard decision of which direction
- 24:30I'm going to I'm going to go in. So.
- 24:33>> It's always a tough one. I will say
- 24:36something that
- 24:37um
- 24:38has been important to us in this past
- 24:40year or two is we've built these machine
- 24:42start integrations with both Laundry
- 24:44Works and with Steve from from uh Fast
- 24:47Card Laundry Card CCI S.
- 24:50Um
- 24:50and so either system you go with now,
- 24:53with the Laundry Works the way that one
- 24:55works is you do the Wash Links app and
- 24:57you basically the employees would just
- 24:59the order will populate in their app and
- 25:02they'll just select the order and then
- 25:03start the machine for that that order
- 25:05from their phone. And then with CCI, you
- 25:08basically just tap the screen of which
- 25:10um
- 25:12which washers and dryers you want to
- 25:13start and it'll just start those, which
- 25:15is a little bit better than them having
- 25:17to just the card that then they can use
- 25:19for every, you know, and you don't know
- 25:21if they're using, you know, the card for
- 25:23>> Mhm. Mhm. Mhm.
- 25:24>> I mean, you can run the reports,
- 25:25obviously, and and and I think that's
- 25:27the thing to do with it.
- 25:28>> right? How many times are you going to
- 25:30sit there and go through every single
- 25:31report? Go It Sometimes it just becomes
- 25:34a trust system, right? Until unless you
- 25:36start catching each I'm telling
- 25:38It doesn't matter if you catch one
- 25:40person then you start opening a can of
- 25:41worms, right?
- 25:42>> Right.
- 25:43>> Yep.
- 25:43>> So.
- 25:44>> That that is exactly how it works and
- 25:47everyone has
- 25:48their own
- 25:48>> Both systems have their own perks.
- 25:50Um
- 25:51uh
- 25:53But yeah, I just have to make that hard
- 25:55decision. I don't know I don't know
- 25:56where I There's one I want to go in one
- 25:58direction, but just technology and
- 26:01um some things like if I want to keep it
- 26:03a hybrid store then, you know,
- 26:05uh
- 26:06one system doesn't support it, one
- 26:07system does. So, just trying to figure
- 26:09it out.
- 26:10>> Yeah, Steve's always been pretty good
- 26:12about the hybrid card
- 26:13>> Oh yeah, for sure. For sure, 100%. Now,
- 26:17and Steve Steve has been a very
- 26:18essential part of CCI, too. He's He's
- 26:20awesome. He's humble. He's amazing. Very
- 26:23friendly.
- 26:24And I I I enjoy talking to him a lot.
- 26:27>> Yeah, and we really
- 26:28>> personal, you know, like you kind of
- 26:30have that personal relationship. So,
- 26:32it's good.
- 26:33>> He was the first guest on this podcast
- 26:36and part of it was cuz I I just knew how
- 26:37easy he is to talk to and get along with
- 26:40and and uh
- 26:41he's just a great guy. So, yeah.
- 26:43Um do you have Do you put the little
- 26:46card systems on cuz I know you do retail
- 26:49at both your counter Mhm. And your you
- 26:52have vending machines.
- 26:53>> Mhm.
- 26:54>> And
- 26:55I was listening to your episode, your
- 26:58other podcast or your your YouTube video
- 27:00or whatever it is.
- 27:02And I heard you say one of the same
- 27:03things that we say a lot, which is
- 27:06yeah, sure you've got the soaps and the
- 27:09snacks at the counter,
- 27:12but also you have them at the vending
- 27:13machines because what if someone at the
- 27:15counter is busy or what if they just
- 27:17don't want to talk to someone that day?
- 27:20Or we actually have the flip of that
- 27:21happen a lot where these people they
- 27:23don't get out of the house more than
- 27:24once a week and that's just to do their
- 27:25laundry. And so they want to go talk to
- 27:28someone to buy a snack or they want to
- 27:29have some interaction and and chat with
- 27:32the attendants at the counter or
- 27:33whatever. And so I think there are a lot
- 27:36of benefits to having
- 27:37both. But I wanted to hear your thoughts
- 27:39on that and also if you had the card
- 27:41systems connected to that, like if you
- 27:43have put that through the LaundryWorks
- 27:45and CCI and stuff.
- 27:46>> I for the card system I've only
- 27:48connected them to the bathroom and the
- 27:51register.
- 27:53When it comes to the
- 27:58drink machine, snack machine and even
- 28:00the soap machine, I have them on credit
- 28:03card readers, like Nayax credit card
- 28:05readers.
- 28:07I've kept that only because we're very
- 28:09transient city. There's a lot of
- 28:12people that live nearby or there's a
- 28:14shopping center, there's a nearby
- 28:16there's a gas station next door to one
- 28:17of us. We're at a school bus stop or the
- 28:21the Marta bus stops. All four of our
- 28:23laundromats are at Marta bus stops.
- 28:26Yeah, some of them I don't want them
- 28:27inside, but if they're just coming in to
- 28:29buy a drink and a snack and they're
- 28:30minding their own business, you know,
- 28:32it's okay. So it kind of keeps that door
- 28:34open to allowing a non-laundry
- 28:37customer to come in, go ahead and
- 28:39[snorts] buy a drink and snack and carry
- 28:41on, right?
- 28:43But we don't have an issue where if
- 28:46people are coming in and trying to use
- 28:48your Wi-Fi and they're buying a drink
- 28:49and hanging out, they know they know
- 28:51better. They
- 28:53They're It's not going to be tolerated.
- 28:54>> That's right.
- 28:56>> Um then if it happens once a year, it's
- 28:58okay, you know, it's not a big deal. So,
- 29:01it it just, you know, just try to keep
- 29:02it try to keep both options open.
- 29:05>> Mhm.
- 29:06Now, that makes a lot of sense and I
- 29:07hadn't even thought about that before,
- 29:08but we did have ATMs before we moved to
- 29:11coinless, you know, we had ATMs that
- 29:13people could pull out cash. Now, you can
- 29:14just, you know, use the the value add
- 29:16center, but
- 29:18um we would have people come in
- 29:21and use the ATMs and sometimes it was
- 29:23like a little bit like
- 29:25there was a reason they weren't using
- 29:27their bank's ATM or whatever. They
- 29:28wanted to a weird kind of ATM on a
- 29:31stand-alone and they would make a
- 29:32special trip just for that. And so,
- 29:35yeah, I haven't necessarily missed that
- 29:37that foot traffic because you get the
- 29:38$2, but then like,
- 29:40you know,
- 29:41>> the headache that comes with it.
- 29:43>> Right, right. You don't necessarily want
- 29:45people to feel unsafe, you know? Well,
- 29:48obviously you don't want people to feel
- 29:49unsafe, but it's not necessarily worth
- 29:50the $2 to have in
- 29:53Yeah, yeah. To have in that extra
- 29:54traffic and extra
- 29:55>> It's funny you say that, right? In my
- 29:57other laundromats, I have
- 29:59ATM bill breaker,
- 30:01um let's just say card system
- 30:03altogether, right? And um so, yeah,
- 30:07customer will use it get an ATM, they'll
- 30:09get a use a bill breaker, and then put
- 30:12in the
- 30:13loyalty card system, and then wash and
- 30:15dry.
- 30:16And at three of my four laundromats, I
- 30:19don't have a homeless issue, right? They
- 30:21come and go, they're walking by,
- 30:22whatever, but not hanging out. But at
- 30:24one of my locations,
- 30:26I've been there for 2 years, and boy,
- 30:28it's been brutal, right? Just get
- 30:31getting them out of that parking lot is
- 30:33like not happening. Like, I just have to
- 30:36like that's
- 30:38City of Atlanta police, forget it,
- 30:40right? They're busy, they they're
- 30:42understaffed, they're working hard, and
- 30:45um
- 30:46they're probably tired of them, too,
- 30:47right? Obviously, there's one or two
- 30:49homeless I I try to keep a good
- 30:51relationship with. I like to help them
- 30:53out when I can. And then and and then
- 30:55they they they want to make a few bucks
- 30:57and [snorts] hey, clean the parking lot,
- 30:59empty the trash. Um I'm we're doing
- 31:02vending machines, come and
- 31:04break the boxes and throw them in the
- 31:06dumpster, you know, or clean the ceiling
- 31:08fans or something. But if I'm there,
- 31:10then they know that for them to come in.
- 31:12But then there are some that they're
- 31:14just there and they harass customers.
- 31:16It's annoying. It's It's really bad,
- 31:19right? And um so for that reason, I did
- 31:22not put a bill breaker in my payment
- 31:24center wall because because then they're
- 31:27just going to come and break the bills
- 31:29and try to you know, do whatever and
- 31:32just be inside. So I just had to like
- 31:35you know, like modify my whole system
- 31:37because these guys just won't leave the
- 31:39parking lot, right? So these are just
- 31:40different issues you deal with from
- 31:43obviously, you want to have one system.
- 31:44You want to have you know, tomorrow, God
- 31:47willing, I have 20 laundromats, then
- 31:49I'll be less
- 31:50um worried and I'll just do one system,
- 31:53period, right? But because and we're
- 31:55still mom-and-pop
- 31:57uh and you know, very hands-on, then you
- 31:59can make these modifications.
- 32:01>> Yeah.
- 32:02The bill breaker, too, for our stores,
- 32:05that was like one of the very last
- 32:06things that we outsourced to because I
- 32:10mean, you know the reasons why,
- 32:11obviously.
- 32:12Um but I that was kind of like my thing
- 32:15of like, you know, we had other people
- 32:17fixing the machines and other people
- 32:19fixing this and that and doing all this.
- 32:21But like if the bill breaker
- 32:23if the bill breaker broke,
- 32:25>> [laughter]
- 32:25>> then you would call Ian.
- 32:27Um whereas actually we would use the
- 32:29little um
- 32:30repair ticket system, and then Brian
- 32:32would usually call me and be like, "Hey,
- 32:33can you stop by?" And And those bill
- 32:35breakers jam a lot because they like
- 32:38if you have too many bills they'll jam,
- 32:39but not like right when you're loading
- 32:41them. You'll leave and then like a day
- 32:42later they'll jam. Or if you have too
- 32:44few they'll jam. And so Brian like 3D
- 32:47printed these little like bill shaped
- 32:49things that like flatten it out and they
- 32:51keep them more straight. And so it's
- 32:53almost like there's so many like little
- 32:55tricks and tips and like
- 32:57>> Nice.
- 32:57>> these little things, but um but yeah,
- 33:00the
- 33:01the bill breakers are not maintenance
- 33:03free. And so I have to agree with you
- 33:05100% on that one. Um
- 33:07>> It just took me almost 1 year to fix one
- 33:09of them. I had one bill breaker down in
- 33:11one of my locations. It was down for 1
- 33:14year. We sent it to Chicago like
- 33:17three or four times. They weren't able
- 33:19to figure it out. And it's like a lot of
- 33:22just back and forth, back and forth.
- 33:23Then it's just sitting in the box, then
- 33:25it is sitting in the bill breaker, then
- 33:26they're sending it off for a couple of
- 33:27weeks. Then finally they were like,
- 33:29"Okay, send it to one company in
- 33:31Louisiana." We sent it to them. And then
- 33:34they figured it out and got it up and
- 33:36running right away. Said, you know,
- 33:38sometimes you you deal with it, right?
- 33:40It is what it is.
- 33:41>> And it's not like they're cheap either.
- 33:43I mean, we paid a lot for ours. And they
- 33:46still
- 33:48>> machines. They're $10,000 machines. Then
- 33:50you start questioning yourself, "Do Do I
- 33:51really need it? Should I put it in my
- 33:52next build out? Or maybe I can save that
- 33:55cost and
- 33:56put it in something else, right? Maybe
- 33:58we can just change our system." But
- 34:00who knows? What What's There's no right
- 34:02or wrong formula, but obviously it's
- 34:05best to just have one to two processes
- 34:09and just trying to and stick to that.
- 34:11Depending on your demographics, your
- 34:14location, and all that.
- 34:15>> Yep. We eventually did get the bill
- 34:17breakers off our plate. We've got a guy
- 34:19that now refills them and he can fix
- 34:21them when they break, which is
- 34:23regularly. And yeah, and and or when
- 34:25they get jammed rather and
- 34:27>> Sure. Yeah, there's no
- 34:28>> pulling them out and pull it back in and
- 34:29then you got to So it's So this is a
- 34:31whole lot of thing, but Uh I know you've
- 34:33got to leave relatively soon so I want
- 34:35to make sure we get to this
- 34:37question. What do you think is the
- 34:39craziest thing that you have ever seen
- 34:42or that has ever happened to you in all
- 34:44your years across all your laundromats?
- 34:50The best story you know the best story
- 34:52to tell the other laundromat owners.
- 34:55If they're afraid it's going to be dull
- 34:56what would you tell them?
- 35:01>> You know
- 35:03obviously there's a lot of crazy stories
- 35:05out there and I know people have had
- 35:06some really funny ones, some really bad
- 35:09ones. I would say I've been blessed to
- 35:12say that I haven't had
- 35:14too many bad ones right? Obviously
- 35:17thefts happen all the times like hey
- 35:20like what when employee left her purse
- 35:22open then of course someone's going to
- 35:23walk in and make sure you're in the back
- 35:25and or they're going to send somebody
- 35:26else to divert them and steal the purse
- 35:28or steal the cell phone right? Small
- 35:29things like that happen. That's normal
- 35:31stuff.
- 35:32That's all normal stuff nothing crazy
- 35:34about that.
- 35:35>> Yeah.
- 35:35>> The two craziest ones that I've kind of
- 35:37dealt with I would say
- 35:40one of them I was much younger when this
- 35:42happened but it happened.
- 35:44Actually wait I have two two really good
- 35:47ones yeah
- 35:48I have two good ones and this could be
- 35:50one of them is definitely a lesson
- 35:51because this is real time happening and
- 35:53this one happened back in October with
- 35:55us. I completely forgot about this one.
- 35:58So the first one though it happened when
- 36:00I was much younger.
- 36:02Um
- 36:04my employee at that time the laundromat
- 36:06was or was not 24 hours I don't remember
- 36:10but my employee came in in the morning
- 36:13it was not 24 hours correct. It was not
- 36:1524 hours. The employee came in opened
- 36:17the front door she
- 36:20then opened her employee office door
- 36:21noticed it was a little bit opened then
- 36:24noticed there were couple buckets of
- 36:25quarters over there and she was like,
- 36:28"Maybe you know, maybe my dad came in
- 36:30and left it there or maybe he's around
- 36:32the corner, maybe it's in the back." She
- 36:33couldn't figure it out. Then once she
- 36:36tried to disarm the alarm, couldn't
- 36:38disarm the alarm.
- 36:39Then
- 36:41get a little suspicious and then she
- 36:42sees our door handle broken. Like our
- 36:45office that goes from inside the
- 36:47employee office, that was kind of open
- 36:49or loose or something.
- 36:51So then she was able to open our door
- 36:54and then like everything was just all
- 36:55over the place. So long story short,
- 36:59um this
- 37:01this guy or group of guys who I don't
- 37:04remember, but what they did was they
- 37:06went from the roof into the in the
- 37:09commercial AC units and on the roof. So
- 37:12they opened or the filter panel, the
- 37:15metal panel where the filters are.
- 37:17And they they they went inside the panel
- 37:23and I wouldn't even know how they would
- 37:24basically crawl through the ceiling
- 37:26because all ceiling tiles, but I guess
- 37:29they used the metal beams inside to kind
- 37:32of make their way in. And they cut the
- 37:34alarm wires, the phone wires,
- 37:36everything, the camera wires as they
- 37:38went in.
- 37:39>> Mission Impossible stuff.
- 37:40>> Yeah, yeah, legit, legit this happened.
- 37:44Pretty much, right? I wish Tom Cruise
- 37:45did it, right? But no, Tom Cruise did
- 37:47not do this. And they got into the
- 37:50office. Somebody had to be like kind of
- 37:54it was a pre-plan. It's not like you
- 37:55just do this right away, right? Somebody
- 37:57somebody was
- 37:59planning this for some time.
- 38:00>> Ocean's 11, they had like an acrobat
- 38:02come in.
- 38:03>> I've never seen the Ocean's 11 movie, so
- 38:05I couldn't tell you. But long story
- 38:08short, now there's no there's no alarm,
- 38:10there's no cameras, there's no phone.
- 38:13So he had all the snacks to himself. He
- 38:15could
- 38:16he was there for like 4 or 5 hours all
- 38:18night and he was he found the keys to
- 38:21the changer machines, right? He He took
- 38:23out all the He took out He took out all
- 38:26the quarters, but the front door was not
- 38:30a turn lock. It was a key lock from the
- 38:32inside.
- 38:34So, he wasn't able to leave with the
- 38:35quarter buckets. Otherwise, he would
- 38:37have opened the front doors, loaded his
- 38:39car with the quarter buckets, too, and,
- 38:41you know, carried on with his life.
- 38:43But, he just took all the cash, went
- 38:45back through the ceiling. So, he had to
- 38:46do more work. So, he had to go back into
- 38:49the ceiling, crawl through the beams or
- 38:52whatever, go back into the AC unit, and
- 38:54leave. And that's how we figured out
- 38:56because
- 38:58when the fire and the police came and
- 38:59they started investigating, they're
- 39:00like, "Why is the AC units open
- 39:02upstairs?" And that's how we figured it
- 39:04out.
- 39:04>> Wow. That is actually a really good
- 39:06story. That's pretty incredible.
- 39:08>> Yeah. So, that was story number That's
- 39:09That's the That's the one crazy one
- 39:12that's the recent craziest one. This is
- 39:15like the funny one. Like, funny and
- 39:16crazy at the same time. And it's funny
- 39:18it happened to someone two other people
- 39:20in Atlanta that I personally know.
- 39:22Okay?
- 39:24Um
- 39:26scammers. They're calling and they'll
- 39:28call your store phone, and then they'll
- 39:31all they'll they'll they'll tell they'll
- 39:33they'll basically like make you go
- 39:35puzzle. I don't know how they do it, but
- 39:36they're good at this, right? They're
- 39:37scammers.
- 39:38So, they basically got my overnight He's
- 39:41an older man.
- 39:43Much older guy. So, they scared him.
- 39:46They hypnotized him. They called the
- 39:49store phone. They knew knew my name,
- 39:51knew his name, knew all my employees'
- 39:53names, and then they were like, "Hey,
- 39:57we're going to have ask you to call
- 39:58We're going to call you on your cell
- 39:59phone, too." So, now they got him on
- 40:01both phones. So, now he can't call 911.
- 40:04He probably won't answer my call.
- 40:06And not call anyone else, right? So, now
- 40:09they're have him on on both phones.
- 40:12And they're like, "We need you We We you
- 40:15to go inside the main office, Omar's in
- 40:18trouble,
- 40:19Um um and we need to wire some money.
- 40:22And he's like, "I don't have access."
- 40:24Somehow they knew that we had a crowbar
- 40:26in the back. They're like, "Go find
- 40:28something. Go find a shovel. Go find a
- 40:30crowbar. Go find something in the back
- 40:32room."
- 40:33So, he goes and he does it. He picks up
- 40:35the crowbar.
- 40:37Um he gets into the office, breaks the
- 40:40crowbar with the office.
- 40:42Granted, this all happened around
- 40:451:30 in the morning. It's a 24-hour
- 40:47laundromat. This happened around 1:30 in
- 40:49the morning.
- 40:51I'm at my sister's home. We're having
- 40:52coffee at that time. We're drinking tea
- 40:54or something around that time.
- 40:57And probably 15 minutes prior to this, I
- 41:00was checking the cameras, okay? And and
- 41:04I was because we had just gotten our
- 41:05store painted like 2 days prior to that.
- 41:07So, I was kind of admiring the paint and
- 41:09I was like, "Okay, there's only one or
- 41:10two customers." I see him walking around
- 41:12the laundromat, but he was on he I
- 41:14remember seeing him on both phones.
- 41:15Like, he had both phones in his hand.
- 41:16I'm like,
- 41:18he's tied to somebody. Like, whatever.
- 41:19But, he's inside the laundromat. That's
- 41:21all that matters.
- 41:22>> Right.
- 41:22>> Right? And long story short, he took the
- 41:25crowbar, broke into one of the coin
- 41:27machines.
- 41:29Yeah, not the card machines. Broke into
- 41:31the quarter machine.
- 41:33The scammers got him to put
- 41:36several thousand dollars worth of
- 41:37quarters
- 41:39all on the laundry cart.
- 41:41Drive it across Take it across the
- 41:42street to Kroger.
- 41:46At 2:00 3:00 a.m. in the morning at this
- 41:47point.
- 41:49And
- 41:50started putting quarters in into the
- 41:53machine where you get the cash out. So,
- 41:55he did that.
- 41:56So, he gave almost I would say 80% of
- 41:59our quarters in until that machine said,
- 42:00"Hey, we're full."
- 42:02And then he got all that cash. He has it
- 42:05in his pocket.
- 42:07And then he's saying and then he told
- 42:09the my employee to put it into one of
- 42:11those Bitcoin machines.
- 42:13>> Right. Right. Right.
- 42:14>> Luckily, the Bitcoin machine was out of
- 42:16order.
- 42:17>> Oh my goodness.
- 42:18>> So then, he said, "Oh, why don't you
- 42:20just go down the street? There's a
- 42:21Chevron gas station. They have it."
- 42:24So they He was about to
- 42:26after 3-4 hours of doing this, okay?
- 42:29This is like 3-4 hours. It's like 5:00
- 42:31a.m. now.
- 42:33Then something kind of like struck his
- 42:35mind. It was like, "Something's not
- 42:37adding up." He's like, "You want me to
- 42:39go You want from there to the Kroger,
- 42:41now from here to the gas station.
- 42:44This doesn't make sense."
- 42:46He's like, "No. No. No. No. Go do it.
- 42:47Blah. Blah. Blah. Blah." He's like, "But
- 42:48why?" Now he starts questioning. Now he
- 42:50starts thinking like, "Okay, this is
- 42:52This is not making sense."
- 42:54And then he hung up.
- 42:56Luckily, he hung up. He called back and
- 42:59it was not going through.
- 43:01>> Uh-huh.
- 43:03>> And it was almost $4,000 in cash that he
- 43:05was about to just give away, right?
- 43:08So then, he came back to the laundromat.
- 43:11He called me.
- 43:13I'm like, "Bro, come on. You got to be
- 43:15kidding me right now." But it happened.
- 43:18>> That's crazy. That's so
- 43:20crazy.
- 43:21>> luckily,
- 43:22like he didn't go to Chevron. He didn't
- 43:24go to He The machine was down at Kroger.
- 43:26So our cash got saved.
- 43:28>> Wow.
- 43:28>> single penny back. He didn't run away
- 43:30with it. He didn't do anything with it.
- 43:32>> [snorts]
- 43:32>> Um and he he he he brought it back to
- 43:35the laundromat. Waited until I got
- 43:37there. And I got there till like 11:00
- 43:39a.m. He's like, "I'm not leaving until
- 43:40you have I'm like, "Just leave it in the
- 43:41office. I'll hand it." He's like, "Nope.
- 43:43You come and then I'll give you the
- 43:44cash." I'm like, "Okay." He was scared.
- 43:45He was upset. He was scared. He was
- 43:47frustrated.
- 43:48>> Yeah.
- 43:49>> like at the verge of crying.
- 43:51Um
- 43:52so that happened. But it happened to my
- 43:53other employee 2 years ago. It was a new
- 43:55lady I I hired her at another
- 43:57laundromat.
- 43:58The guys told her, "Hey, Omar's in the
- 44:00hospital. Don't call his dad. Don't call
- 44:02him." And they took a fire extinguisher.
- 44:05And she started banging on my office
- 44:07door, but because we have metal doors,
- 44:10we don't have residential doors. A lot
- 44:11of people put residential doors in their
- 44:12laundromats, like in their bathrooms or
- 44:14their janitorial rooms.
- 44:16Spend the money, put metal doors.
- 44:19Because we have strong metal doors, she
- 44:22spent 35 to 40 minutes
- 44:25with that fire extinguisher. She All she
- 44:27did was break our lock and a lot of like
- 44:30dents on our door,
- 44:33but she couldn't get in.
- 44:35Right? So, yeah, there's there's some
- 44:38crazy
- 44:39This is like standard the crazy stuff
- 44:41that that's happened to us, but yeah,
- 44:42it's happened. So,
- 44:44train your employees, let them know any
- 44:47scammers call, just hang up. Don't don't
- 44:49say don't believe it. Hey, you got your
- 44:52you know, your your boss is in the
- 44:53hospital, you can't call them, or you'll
- 44:55go to jail, or you'll die. They'll come
- 44:58up with the craziest stories. They'll
- 44:59hypnotize you, and it it it'll happen.
- 45:01It happened. And it happened to two
- 45:03other laundromat owners here in Atlanta.
- 45:05>> Wow, that is crazy. That makes me want
- 45:08to do like a little like meeting with
- 45:10all the staff and be like, "These are
- 45:11the signs that you're talking to a
- 45:13scammer, and don't do these things that
- 45:15they
- 45:16That is so crazy. I've never heard that
- 45:18before, but man, I believe it. I've I've
- 45:21heard those podcasts where they like
- 45:22hypnotize people or like get them to do
- 45:24such crazy stuff, and it's so easy to
- 45:26>> in Atlanta whose whose employee it
- 45:28happened to, she actually ended up
- 45:29giving
- 45:31I think 2,500 or $3,000 into the Bitcoin
- 45:34machine. So,
- 45:35>> Okay.
- 45:36>> then she actually ended up going to jail
- 45:38that same night, but then the obviously
- 45:41the owner didn't feel good. He bailed
- 45:43back her out, kept her the job, but then
- 45:45she paid him back over the next like,
- 45:46you know, two or three or four months,
- 45:48whatever.
- 45:49But it it happened.
- 45:51>> Wow, that is so crazy.
- 45:54>> Yeah.
- 45:54>> crazy. Can you imagine they're going to
- 45:56have AI that's going to be good enough
- 45:57to do that, too. And so, they'll just
- 45:59have AI calling
- 46:00>> Yeah. Cuz your voice
- 46:02It's your voice, right? They can They
- 46:04can use your voice. They can use my
- 46:05voice to call my employee right now and
- 46:07say do this and do this and do this. But
- 46:10if I'm telling you on the phone to break
- 46:12my door,
- 46:13that's your red flag.
- 46:14>> Right.
- 46:15>> That's your red flag, right?
- 46:16>> Wouldn't do anything with the cash like
- 46:17that, yeah.
- 46:19>> If I've never told you in
- 46:21364 days out of the year, then that one
- 46:23day I'm not going to do it, right?
- 46:24>> Yeah.
- 46:25>> If not If you can't call me if if it's
- 46:27if you think something doesn't sound
- 46:28right, hang up, call my dad. Something
- 46:30doesn't make sense, call another store.
- 46:32Just call anybody and then whoever you
- 46:35can to make sure that this is fake.
- 46:37>> Yeah, but that's a good point. We need
- 46:39to have a list of like these are the
- 46:40four people you verify with if if you
- 46:43get asked something unusual, then here's
- 46:45your list of phone numbers and any of
- 46:47the management.
- 46:48>> Do what?
- 46:49>> Which I probably should do.
- 46:51>> [laughter]
- 46:51>> Well, that's the thing is if you would
- 46:53call any of the managers like you and
- 46:54your dad or for me it's it's me or
- 46:56Brian, but then also we have three
- 46:58managers. If you call them on their cell
- 47:00and they pick up, they're going to tell
- 47:01you that it's a scam, but
- 47:04>> You know, you make such a good point
- 47:05with the AI and then what if it's my
- 47:07voice or Brian's voice and they're just
- 47:08trying to
- 47:10do their job and keep their job, then
- 47:11yeah, that's a
- 47:14Man, I feel like we we covered some good
- 47:15ground today, man. I know you've got to
- 47:17go uh
- 47:18You've got to go pick up some kids,
- 47:19right?
- 47:20>> Yeah. Yeah. No worries. I hope I was
- 47:22able to uh
- 47:24you know, have a good podcast.
- 47:26>> Oh, it was amazing, man. It was it's my
- 47:28favorite. It's really was was incredible
- 47:30and your
- 47:31your stories were excellent there at the
- 47:33end. You did not disappoint with the
- 47:35craziest stories. I actually [laughter]
- 47:36they're actually actionable, too. I
- 47:37actually want to go and yeah take some
- 47:39action for our laundromats cuz I could
- 47:41totally see this happening to
- 47:43some of our employees, so
- 47:45>> And my dad actually messaged me last
- 47:47week or called called
- 47:49called me or something he was like, "Hey
