OLED MacBook Pro TESTED! I Wasn’t Expecting These RESULTS! — Transcript

- 0:00So then guys, Apple has made this new
- 0:02MacBook Pro lighter and added OLED, but
- 0:06what happens when you push it and how
- 0:08does it compare to the mini LED MacBook
- 0:12Pro? So that's right, guys. Today I want
- 0:14to see if there's actually any
- 0:16difference with this new OLED MacBook
- 0:18Pro. Now, we know we've got essentially
- 0:20a very similar design MacBook Pro to the
- 0:23mini LED, and that's not essentially a
- 0:26bad thing, but really underneath the
- 0:27hood, is any kind of been any
- 0:29enhancements here that we can actually
- 0:31push out, say, the likes of an M5 Max
- 0:33even further? Have Apple done any
- 0:35changes there? Well, we're going to find
- 0:37out today, and I'm going to do you guys
- 0:39a load of different benchmarks test.
- 0:42Now, to begin with, the first thing you
- 0:43guys probably want to know is what are
- 0:45my specs inside of these? Well, I've got
- 0:47the identical specs underneath the hood.
- 0:50We've got the M5 Max, and these are the
- 0:52top ones. These are the ones with the
- 0:53top GPU cores and top CPU cores, plus
- 0:57the top amount of RAM, 128 GB of RAM.
- 1:02And both of these also have 4 terbte of
- 1:05storage as well. And don't tell Sam
- 1:08Alman this cuz otherwise you'll be
- 1:09coming round to steal my MacBook Pros
- 1:12and pull out the RAM and pull out the
- 1:13storage. And with that, one of the first
- 1:15things you guys probably also want to
- 1:17know, what is battery life? Well, I'm
- 1:19going to reveal the secret right now.
- 1:21And that is is that after doing all
- 1:23these tests I've done today, have a look
- 1:25at the battery score right here. You can
- 1:28see that the MiniLED,
- 1:31we actually got 34% battery life after
- 1:34doing all the tests I'm about to show
- 1:35you. Whereas with the OLED MacBook Pro,
- 1:39we got 39%
- 1:41battery life left over. So, I would say
- 1:44if you were to drain the batteries down
- 1:46on both of these MacBook Pros, you know,
- 1:48to dead when the mini LED would get to
- 1:50zero, I would still expect probably
- 1:52about 10 to 12% battery life on the OLED
- 1:55MacBook Pro. So, definitely there is an
- 1:57improvement there. And that OLED display
- 1:59is doing a big enhancement there in
- 2:01helping out with battery life. So, that
- 2:03is really really good to see. But next
- 2:06of all, what about performance-wise
- 2:08then? What's going to happen there?
- 2:09Well, I've done a couple of synthetic
- 2:11benchmarks. Now, I'm not the biggest fan
- 2:13of synthetic benchmarks. I don't think
- 2:14they reveal the whole story, but I know
- 2:16you guys love to see them anyway. So,
- 2:18let's have a look. First of all, SSD
- 2:20performance on Blackmagic. Now, I've got
- 2:23a 4 terbte drive in both of these. And
- 2:26let's have a look at the speeds that
- 2:27we've got right here. Well, you can see
- 2:29really there isn't a lot of difference
- 2:32whatsoever.
- 2:33So, really for the read speed, you know,
- 2:36I would say the OLED came ever so
- 2:38slightly ahead. Not much in it. And the
- 2:40same with the right speed. It's quite
- 2:42funny that the mini LED came slightly
- 2:45ahead. So really there's no difference
- 2:47there. It seems like Apple are using the
- 2:49exact same type of, you know, RAM that
- 2:52we've got in here. The NVME nan storage,
- 2:55whatever it is there. Of course, it's
- 2:57not upgradable. So it's exactly the same
- 2:59there. There's no differences whatsoever
- 3:02there. But what about say the actual
- 3:04CPU? What is going on there? Well, I've
- 3:06done things like Geekbench and Cinebench
- 3:08as well. So, let's have a look at
- 3:09Geekbench to begin with. Well, we can
- 3:12see just like storage, well, the OLED is
- 3:14ever so slightly out in front on single
- 3:17core. Hardly anything there. And then
- 3:19also the same in multi-core performance.
- 3:22The miniLEDD came slightly ahead. And
- 3:25this could just be silicon lottery. That
- 3:27is what I would say. It doesn't seem
- 3:28like there's really any differences
- 3:30whatsoever. And to be honest, we had the
- 3:32same with the likes of the Mac Studio
- 3:34with the M5 Max when you compared it to
- 3:36a MacBook Pro Miniledd. Really, the
- 3:39performance was identical for single
- 3:41core and for multi-core performance on
- 3:43kind of like a synthetic benchmark. So,
- 3:46again, nothing really to really announce
- 3:48here. And I think to be deadly honest
- 3:50for the rest of this kind of video I'm
- 3:52just going to show you really all the
- 3:53charts instead of me just bouncing
- 3:55backwards and forwards between showing
- 3:57what's on the screen running the
- 3:58benchmarks and you know you guys
- 4:00whizzing through and flicking through.
- 4:02It's probably just better for me just to
- 4:03show you all the charts all in one go.
- 4:05So that is what we're going to do next
- 4:07of all. So let's have a look next of all
- 4:09then at Cinebench to see what that kind
- 4:11of scoring we got there. Well, we can
- 4:14see again it's a very very similar
- 4:16story. In fact, we got 732 on single
- 4:18core for both of these models. There was
- 4:21no differences there. And then for
- 4:23multi-core performance, well, again,
- 4:25there isn't much in it. The OLED came
- 4:27out just slightly in front. You wouldn't
- 4:29even notice this difference. There's
- 4:31nothing in it. Again, you could call it
- 4:32silicon lottery. No differences there
- 4:35whatsoever for Cinebench CPU. Very
- 4:37similar to like likes of Geekbench. And
- 4:40then even doing a Geekbench Metal score.
- 4:42I did this on the GPU side. Well, again,
- 4:45you can see the mini LED came up ever so
- 4:47slightly in front. It's nothing again.
- 4:49It's exactly the same. It looks like,
- 4:51you know, there's no differences here.
- 4:54And then even if we move over to 3D Mark
- 4:56and this is still Nomad Light and this
- 4:58is the amount of frames per second.
- 5:00Well, you know, again, we just got the
- 5:02OLED ever so slightly out in front. It's
- 5:04not even half a frame per Well, it is
- 5:06about half a frame per second faster.
- 5:08It's nothing. You're not going to notice
- 5:09this difference whatsoever here. And
- 5:12then even if we went over to so doing
- 5:14Blender GPU rendering, I got some, you
- 5:17know, some of those benchmarks ones off
- 5:19the internet and I've got party tug and
- 5:20I did swamp. And again, you can see the
- 5:23difference here in the actual time it
- 5:25took to render these. On the OLED, it
- 5:28was ever so slightly slower on Party Tug
- 5:31and on Swamp it was ever so slightly
- 5:33faster really. It just swap between
- 5:35them. There was nothing in it. And
- 5:37again, if I reran these again, maybe
- 5:39they would be the other way around. The
- 5:41main thing is there is no differences
- 5:43here whatsoever in what we're getting.
- 5:46But what about say running AI and
- 5:48running models there? Are there any big
- 5:50differences? Well, I did the same thing
- 5:51again. I started running things like
- 5:53Alarma and I also ran things like LM
- 5:55Studio. And let me show you some of the
- 5:57results here on some of the models that
- 5:58I loaded for local AI. Well, we can see
- 6:01here for the generation speed of tokens.
- 6:04Obviously, higher is better here on Quen
- 6:073.6 here. This is a 35B A3 B here.
- 6:11That's one. Well, we could see, you
- 6:13know, it was 147.2
- 6:15on the OLED and it was 146.8.
- 6:19Nothing in it whatsoever. And then the
- 6:21same thing on a Quen 3.8 27B, a very
- 6:24popular model used out there. If you got
- 6:27enough RAM for it, well, you can see
- 6:29that obviously, yeah, same thing again.
- 6:31It was literally nothing in it. 71.6 to
- 6:3470.8 eight and then obviously using a
- 6:36higher condensed kind of model here. So
- 6:39yeah, really nothing at all. Again, the
- 6:42mini LED was ever so slightly in front
- 6:45and again there's another even stronger
- 6:46model there was even been condensed even
- 6:49further down again. And uh yeah, not
- 6:52much difference whatsoever. We got like
- 6:5421 tokens per second as it were. There
- 6:57is really no differences whatsoever what
- 7:00we've got here for just running Quen on
- 7:03local AI and even switching over to the
- 7:06likes of GPT OSS and this was 120B and
- 7:10obviously I did a short prompt a
- 7:11document test and the documents first
- 7:13token kind of test how long it took to
- 7:15get that again look at the scores
- 7:17there's nothing really in it again we
- 7:19got 92 for both of them we got 68 we got
- 7:2269 just we got 68 you know six here and
- 7:25then we got 69 just over nothing at all
- 7:28in that document test and then document
- 7:30first token to actually appear.
- 7:32Obviously lower is better. The mini LED
- 7:34was not even half a second faster. It
- 7:37was nothing in it whatsoever. So for
- 7:39even just doing local AI, there's going
- 7:41to be no difference if you get yourself
- 7:43a miniLEDD uh M5 Max or if you get
- 7:45yourself the OLED, you know, M5 Max
- 7:48there. But what happens if you do say
- 7:49video editing? Surely that makes a
- 7:51difference because obviously it takes a
- 7:52bit longer to render. Well, you'd be
- 7:54surprised. Again, it didn't really do
- 7:55much at all. You can see here I did a
- 7:58ProRes, you know, 422 export. And uh
- 8:01yeah, the M5 Max Miniledd took about 1
- 8:04second quicker than the likes of the
- 8:06OLED M5 Max. So, not really much in it
- 8:09whatsoever. It was basically identical
- 8:12there. And then I did a Final Cut 4K
- 8:14here, uh export here in Heav, uh you
- 8:17know, most of us use, you know, maybe
- 8:19for doing like YouTube and whatever. The
- 8:20OLED came out slightly in faster. It was
- 8:222 seconds faster. that's not going to
- 8:24make a night and day difference to you
- 8:26if you had a uh you know miniLEDD
- 8:29version. There's nothing really in it
- 8:31whatsoever. And you know, even if I did
- 8:33an 8K RAW here, same thing as well. Also
- 8:36rendering a timeline, it took 39 seconds
- 8:39on the OLED, it took 41 seconds on the
- 8:42mini LED. Really, you don't have time to
- 8:44make yourself a coffee in 2 seconds
- 8:46there. It's not going to make any kind
- 8:48of difference. And just in case you want
- 8:50to know, I also ran this on Da Vinci
- 8:52Resolve 4K. I did the same sort of thing
- 8:54into the fiveinut heav export project
- 8:57here. And uh yeah, the OLED took 33
- 9:00seconds and the miniLEDD took 31 seconds
- 9:03to export the exact same project. No
- 9:06differences here whatsoever really. And
- 9:09then moving over, if you do photographs
- 9:11and things like this in Lightroom, I did
- 9:13an AI D noiseise and it was the same
- 9:15kind of thing. a single photo processing
- 9:17here and the time to do that. Lower is
- 9:19better. And uh yeah, the mini LED took
- 9:22about 1 second quicker, 10 seconds
- 9:23instead of 11. Really not a night and
- 9:26day kind of difference. And even with
- 9:28super resolution. So this is processing
- 9:30it again. They both came out basically
- 9:33identical here on my kind of stopwatch
- 9:34when I was doing this. And then even the
- 9:37same again when I was doing Lightroom
- 9:38photo export here. This is 500 pictures
- 9:41I was exporting at 42 megapixels. and
- 9:45lower is better really. Yeah, the mini
- 9:47LED took about 2 seconds faster. There
- 9:49is nothing whatsoever in this. There's
- 9:51no differences whatsoever. But then
- 9:54after this, I decided to run Cyberpunk
- 9:562077 to see what the frames per second
- 9:59were like there on both of that made any
- 10:01difference whatsoever. Well, I loaded up
- 10:03the games and I did a benchmark test and
- 10:05I can tell you right now really again
- 10:08there was no difference. The M5 Max OLED
- 10:11uh gave me an average of about 85 frames
- 10:14per second. This was on the ultra preset
- 10:16here. And the M5 Max Miniledd gave me 87
- 10:20frames per second. Again, no differences
- 10:22really. You couldn't really as you play
- 10:24the game notice any differences. It was
- 10:26not night and day difference whatsoever.
- 10:28So, I think we can conclude just with
- 10:30that that if you've got yourself a
- 10:32miniLEDD MacBook Pro, you're considering
- 10:34getting yourself um you know a cheaper
- 10:37version or you want the performance of
- 10:38the M5 Max, but you don't want to really
- 10:40pay out for the OLED display. Well,
- 10:42yeah, get yourself the mini LED version
- 10:44if you can get it at a good price so
- 10:46far. But surely it makes a big
- 10:47difference. You're thinking maybe in
- 10:49kind of thermal. So, if we pushed it out
- 10:51and let's do like say a proper like
- 10:53benchmark for a long time pushed it out
- 10:55that's going to make a big difference.
- 10:56Well, what I did was I ran Cinebench GPU
- 10:59and I ran this for 10 minutes. And when
- 11:01I got to around about 8 and 1 half
- 11:03minutes or so into that test, that's
- 11:05when I measured the temperatures here on
- 11:07my thermal camera. As you can see right
- 11:10here, I was measuring on both of these
- 11:12versions. And let's have a look at the
- 11:14scores then what we got right here or
- 11:15the temperatures that we got right here.
- 11:17Well, we can see there is not a lot of
- 11:20difference. Again, Apple looks like they
- 11:22haven't really redesigned it. I know the
- 11:24thermal video kind of showed a little
- 11:25bit of a difference there and how the
- 11:26heat was dispensed, but it's not really
- 11:28making too much of a difference here on
- 11:30the likes of the mini LED here on the
- 11:32center where the CPU GPU kind of sits
- 11:35there. Well, it was 47.1°
- 11:38C. It's 116° 8 fah. And you know,
- 11:42compared to the M5 Max OLED, well, that
- 11:44was 46.9°
- 11:46C compared to 116.4°
- 11:50F here. So yeah, ever so slightly
- 11:55cooler. Really nothing in it between
- 11:58both of these. And then the same thing
- 12:00again looking at where the fan exhaust
- 12:02is or where the most hottest part is.
- 12:04You would say here where it pushes out
- 12:05all the heat. Well, again, same thing on
- 12:08the mini LED. It was 47.6° C. It was
- 12:12117°.7
- 12:13fah here. And uh yeah, compared to the
- 12:17one on the OLED, it was 47.2° C. Well,
- 12:21is 117° Fahrenheit dead? Again, really
- 12:24not even a degree difference between
- 12:26both of these either in Celsius or in
- 12:28Fahrenheit. It's really not making a
- 12:30difference here. So, I think what we can
- 12:33conclude from doing all these kind of
- 12:34benchmarks here is just one big
- 12:37difference and that is the OLED display
- 12:39makes a difference to do with battery
- 12:41life and that is it really. So, if you
- 12:43were looking to go, oh, I'm going to buy
- 12:45the OLED because it's going to give me
- 12:46better performance and it's going to
- 12:47give me better everything. Well, no, not
- 12:50really. It's only going to improve your
- 12:52battery life and it's only going to
- 12:54improve it by around about 10 to 12%
- 12:56compared to buying yourself a mini LED
- 12:58as we learned right at the beginning of
- 13:00this video. That is really going to be
- 13:01it. And I'd be saying this right now, if
- 13:04you can pick up the miniLEDD MacBook Pro
- 13:07for say, you know, $600
- 13:10less than saying buying your one with an
- 13:12OLED display and you're not that
- 13:14bothered by touchscreen and you're not
- 13:16overly bothered by, you know, actually
- 13:18having an OLED display, I'd be picking
- 13:21up the miniLEDD version because yeah,
- 13:23it's the exact same chip. And as we've
- 13:25seen today, you know, from the results,
- 13:26there is nothing in it. There's no
- 13:28differences really whatsoever. it's
- 13:30worth saving your money getting that
- 13:33model than getting the OLED. But what I
- 13:35would also be saying with that is that
- 13:36if you do say have a newer MacBook Pro,
- 13:39let's say if you still have say an M3
- 13:41Pro, an M3 Max for example, or you know
- 13:44you got M4, M5 or maybe some of you guys
- 13:46even got M2, I would say just wait to
- 13:49the M7 because that is where we will
- 13:51probably see a bit more of a jump in
- 13:53change and it's possible that Apple
- 13:55might not even bring out a miniLEDD
- 13:57version of that M7 version of the M7 Pro
- 14:00or the M7 Max. So I would just maybe
- 14:02just wait until then potentially. But
- 14:04what I would be saying, if you're not
- 14:06really bothered by the screen, hunt down
- 14:08a miniLEDD version. It saves you the
- 14:10money. It gives you the exact same
- 14:12amount of performance as we've seen
- 14:13today. And really, I would say to lose
- 14:1610% battery, 12% battery, and it's going
- 14:19to save you $600, for example.
- 14:21Personally, I'd say it's worth it for
- 14:22that. But that's just my opinion there.
- 14:25But really, guys, that is it. That is
- 14:27what we've seen today. There isn't
- 14:28really any differences whatsoever. But I
- 14:30hope this video has helped you out there
- 14:32because I know some of you guys wanted
- 14:33to know, did it make a big difference?
- 14:34Has Apple redesigned this to push out
- 14:36those chips further? And clearly it
- 14:38shows they really haven't. But let me
- 14:41know what your thoughts are on this
- 14:42though. Did you expect any big changes?
- 14:44Were you expecting anything else to be
- 14:45seen? Well, let me know your thoughts in
- 14:47the comments below. And on that note as
- 14:49well guys, it's time to wrap up the
- 14:51video too. So if you have enjoyed
- 14:52watching it, please do press the like
- 14:53button. As always, if you do want to
