Okay fine, I'll try Skyrim — Transcript

- 0:02As a 30-year-old gamer, you'd think
- 0:03Skyrim would have been a game I tried
- 0:05when it came out in 2011. It was prime
- 0:08gaming years. I was 16 years old with no
- 0:10job, no girlfriend, no self-confidence.
- 0:13How did I not play
- 0:15Skyrim? Oh, I know why. I was too busy
- 0:18playing Halo Reach, World of Warcraft,
- 0:20and sweating on League of Legends. The
- 0:22reason why I haven't played Skyrim is
- 0:24because I'm purely a competitive gamer.
- 0:27And for 14 years since then, that has
- 0:29stayed mostly true. But times are
- 0:31changing. I have a kid on the way, and
- 0:34competitive gaming is not a great way to
- 0:36blow off steam after a full day of poop
- 0:38and vomit everywhere. So Skyrim will be
- 0:41my first openw world RPG. But I want to
- 0:44do this right. I want to play with zero
- 0:47expectations. No guides, no how-tos, no
- 0:51knowledge from other people. I want to
- 0:52keep the music and ambience levels
- 0:54cranked to the max.
- 0:58This game is nostalgic for so many. So,
- 1:01how cool would it be if I was able to
- 1:02create those same feelings, but maybe
- 1:05just a few years later than some of you?
- 1:06Skyrim has the responsibility now of
- 1:09introducing me to the magnificence of
- 1:11openw world RPG games. Maybe it can
- 1:14spark a new love for the whole genre. I
- 1:16will say one thing. After all the
- 1:18glazing Skyrim has received over the
- 1:20years, this game better be good.
- 1:34[Music]
- 1:41Hey, you you're finally
- 1:44awake. You were wait. That would be a
- 1:47perfect scene for a meme of some kind.
- 1:49Imperial ambush. With any form of media,
- 1:52it's important for the creator to
- 1:53establish a relationship with whoever is
- 1:55engaging with it. In this case, the
- 1:57player must become familiar with the
- 1:59story, the environment, the processes in
- 2:02which you progress, and set the
- 2:03foundation of what's to come. This is
- 2:05important because I'll be honest, I'm
- 2:08the type of person who reads the first
- 2:09chapter of a book, but never finishes
- 2:12it. As much as I've heard my friends
- 2:14rave about Skyrim, a part of me is
- 2:16worried that some aspect of Skyrim will
- 2:19turn me off from the game. I'll play for
- 2:21one hour, log off, and never try it
- 2:24again. There'd have to be a point early
- 2:26on that convinced me to stay. Forget the
- 2:29A big risk I took was choosing to listen
- 2:32to all the dialogue I could. Normally,
- 2:34I'm the world record holder for skipping
- 2:36dialogue, but this time I wanted to try
- 2:38and understand the story, really immerse
- 2:40myself. WA. The risk of course being,
- 2:44will I get bored and quit? All hell
- 2:46broke loose. And even though I was
- 2:48certain that I would survive because the
- 2:50game just started, a question came to
- 2:53mind. Are the dragons friendly or not
- 2:56friendly? In the cave, I was bombarded
- 2:59with different controls and began to
- 3:00test my surroundings. I noticed that
- 3:02there was plenty of room for exploring,
- 3:04and the game basically insisted that you
- 3:06do so. This kind of overwhelmed me. You
- 3:09know the feeling you get when cleaning
- 3:10your house. You start in the kitchen,
- 3:12but you notice some clothes on the
- 3:14couch. You grab the clothes and take
- 3:16them to the bedroom. Wait, the bed is
- 3:18messy. You clean your bed, but you
- 3:20realize you should probably clean those
- 3:21sheets. On your way to the washer and
- 3:23dryer, you see the shoes laying by the
- 3:25front door and dirt littering the tile.
- 3:27You know where I'm going with this. I
- 3:28was afraid Skyrim might do this to me.
- 3:30How many hours would I waste doing
- 3:32random side quests that I didn't need to
- 3:34do? Or would it even be a waste and
- 3:36those side quests were worth my time?
- 3:39Exiting the cave marked the first step
- 3:42of freedom. Survival mode looked to
- 3:44steal some of that freedom, so I opted
- 3:46out. And then I came across something
- 3:47that would influence the rest of my
- 3:49playthrough massively. These three
- 3:51stones felt like some sort of class
- 3:54choice beyond the race I chose in the
- 3:56beginning. Defaulting to mage most of
- 3:58the time, I thought it would be more
- 4:00impactful to select a path I rarely
- 4:02take, the rogue. Normally, I choose the
- 4:04most overpowered build, but it felt
- 4:06right to not worry about the combat at
- 4:08the moment and enjoy the game in a more
- 4:10casual way. Stealthiness seems like a
- 4:12great way to earn some extra money. A
- 4:14resource I'm sure will benefit me and
- 4:16might be a more engaging way to complete
- 4:18quests instead of steamrolling through
- 4:20everything with some crazy magic spells.
- 4:22It's been 20 minutes of play time, and
- 4:24I'm already appreciating the amount of
- 4:25work put into this game's environment.
- 4:27You could tell a lot of passion went
- 4:29into it. Some games released nowadays
- 4:30aren't able to look this good. I'm
- 4:32looking at you, Pokemon Scarlet. I
- 4:34genuinely was soaking this game in. Look
- 4:37how ridiculously obvious it is. I didn't
- 4:39even know I was doing this. There's my
- 4:41uncle. But the serenity of the moment
- 4:43disappeared as I forgot which buttons
- 4:45did what? Oh, that's not good. What did
- 4:48I just do? Uh uh. What do I
- 4:51do? Oh my god. The quest guy is trying
- 4:54to kill me now. He hat Oh, this is
- 4:57[Music]
- 4:59bad. Whoops. So far, I've done well to
- 5:03not get too sidetracked or fall in love
- 5:05with any of the beautiful locals. And
- 5:07still, my question remains, are the
- 5:09dragons good or are the dragons bad?
- 5:11Yarl Barl. Yarl Yarl Ballruff, that's
- 5:16really hard to say. Uh, he's pretty
- 5:18scared of them, but that doesn't mean
- 5:19they're evil. One thing is for sure, the
- 5:21dragons are in Skyrim, and that's not
- 5:24normal. Something I do now, but not when
- 5:26I was 16, is look up an optimal guide on
- 5:29what to level up to become the
- 5:30strongest. Since I want to do this as
- 5:32authentically as possible, I'm on my own
- 5:35to figure out what is strong. I scrolled
- 5:37through the constellation skill tree
- 5:39working out what would be the most fun.
- 5:41I love the way this skill constellation
- 5:43thing is done. By the way, it it's
- 5:44simple yet complex. So, since I chose
- 5:47the stealth stone earlier, I wanted to
- 5:49complement that. So, I chose to spend my
- 5:51first precious point in lockpicking. I'm
- 5:54already going down the path of shadows.
- 5:55Why not go all in? Now, 45 minutes into
- 5:58the game, I'm in my second cave. I'm
- 6:01guessing lots of time will be spent in
- 6:03caves, and I'm not sure how I feel about
- 6:05this because caves are boring. They're
- 6:07pretty linear so far with too much junk
- 6:10to pick up. Like, I'm kind of hoarding
- 6:12everything, but you never know when
- 6:13you'll need a roll of paper.
- 6:23After decimating the ever living hell
- 6:25out of this rat, my first real quest,
- 6:28retrieving the dragon stone, was
- 6:30underway.
- 6:31Kill it. Kill it. Now, this is where I
- 6:34had my first major hiccup in Skyrim.
- 6:36This damn door. It required a golden
- 6:39claw. And to solve some sort of puzzle.
- 6:42Not only did I not know how to solve the
- 6:44puzzle, I I didn't even have the golden
- 6:46claw. Knowing how large this game is, I
- 6:49started to panic. I thought the
- 6:50probability that this claw was nearby
- 6:52was slim. Did I not talk to the yl for
- 6:54long enough? Did I miss a chest
- 6:56somewhere? Did I accidentally drop it or
- 6:58delete
- 7:04it? Oh, there's a chest. This has to be
- 7:11it. 20 minutes passed and on the brink
- 7:14of giving up and looking it up on
- 7:16Google, I finally stumbled upon it.
- 7:20Guess I'll be looting everything I kill
- 7:22from now on. Well, I've got the claw,
- 7:24but I still don't know how to open the
- 7:31door. Dude, I've been brute forcing
- 7:34this. We We may never know. Maybe it was
- 7:37simple. I I thought it had to do with
- 7:38these fires. A bit further on, I was
- 7:41greeted by the first word of power
- 7:43stone. The Nordic chance drew me in,
- 7:46delivering the knowledge needed to
- 7:48shout. I'm supposed to yell at people
- 7:51like some sort of dragon. Okay, I could
- 7:53get on board with that, I guess. I
- 7:54thought Skyrim was a purely medieval
- 7:56game with basic weapons and armor, but
- 7:58it's turning out that there may be more
- 7:59to this game than I originally thought.
- 8:01Feeling slightly more powerful, the Yarl
- 8:04sensed my confidence and requested I go
- 8:06and take care of a dragon. I want you to
- 8:08go with IF and help her fight this
- 8:10dragon. Seems like a death wish, but
- 8:12what could possibly go wrong? On my way
- 8:14to the dragon, I broke and entered a
- 8:16local house. Are you guys noticing? I'm
- 8:18beginning to get sidetracked. Through
- 8:19the first few hours of gameplay, I I
- 8:21noticed that some books when read grant
- 8:23you a skill up in whatever the book is
- 8:25about. This one was called Thief of
- 8:27Virtue. Though I didn't get a level up
- 8:29in sneaking or lockpicking. Something
- 8:31else leveled up in my pants. I'm not
- 8:34sure if anyone has read this before, but
- 8:36it's a steamy one. Now, about two hours
- 8:38ago, I nearly got devoured by a dragon,
- 8:40and now I'm supposed to fight one
- 8:42headon. I don't know if I'm doing
- 8:43something wrong, but I I feel pretty
- 8:45weak at the moment. Luckily, with the
- 8:47help of some NPCs, the dragon slammed
- 8:49the ground and the dragon's soul became
- 8:51mine. Again, I heard those Nordic chants
- 8:54and and it's becoming evident that I'm
- 8:56not going to be simply swinging axes and
- 8:58shooting fire from my hands. Something
- 9:00else is going on, and I needed to find
- 9:01some answers. So, it's true. The gray
- 9:05beards really were summoning you.
- 9:08Masters of the way of the voice. They
- 9:11live in seclusion high on the slopes of
- 9:13the throat of the world.
- 9:16You mean your mom? I talked to the
- 9:18Greybeards who confirmed that I am
- 9:20dragon born and they gave me a few more
- 9:22shouts to use. Now I was to retrieve the
- 9:24horn of Jurgen Windller. No doubt I
- 9:27would use my newly acquired shouts to
- 9:29navigate the cave in the forthcoming
- 9:30quest. Once there, I stumbled upon a
- 9:33weapon that caught my eye. The ancient
- 9:35Nord sword of cold. A one-handed weapon.
- 9:38I decided here and now that I would
- 9:40pursue the skill of one-handed weapons
- 9:43in the skill tree. I liked being able to
- 9:45hack and slash my opponents while
- 9:46leaving my left hand open for magic,
- 9:48heals, or whatever else a left hand is
- 9:51good for in this game. I want to
- 9:52reiterate how beautiful this game is.
- 9:54Even the inside of this cave, which has
- 9:56no business of looking this good, was
- 9:58crafted with purpose and design in mind.
- 10:00I'd rate the immersion level of this
- 10:02game because of that an easy 10 out of
- 10:0410. Turns out I was right about the
- 10:06shout I just learned being utilized in
- 10:07the cave. Although predictable, it's a
- 10:09great way to showcase what the shout can
- 10:11be used for. Those gray beards sent me
- 10:13to retrieve something that has already
- 10:14been claimed. Good one, guys. Now,
- 10:16taking a look at this letter, I I don't
- 10:18trust this friend, but I I guess we have
- 10:20to go back to Riverwood. So, it actually
- 10:22was a friend, uh, some girl named
- 10:24Deline, the Grandmaster of the Blades
- 10:26faction, who told me that I'm the only
- 10:28one capable of defeating the dragons
- 10:30once and for all, since, you know, I
- 10:32absorb their souls. So, I guess the
- 10:34question is finally answered. We're
- 10:36going to go there, and you're going to
- 10:37kill that dragon. The dragons are not
- 10:39good for Skyrim, and I must suck them
- 10:41dry.
- 10:48What? I can say that this is the point
- 10:52where I actually became hooked. My
- 10:54imagination ran as I guessed what shouts
- 10:57I'd harness as the game progressed. I
- 10:59imagined how strong I'd be once I maxed
- 11:01out my one-handed talent tree. Who
- 11:02knows, maybe I could even become a thief
- 11:05of virtue myself. Yes, Skyrim has a lot
- 11:07to offer and has done a great job
- 11:09building up the story and granting me
- 11:11the freedom to choose how I experience
- 11:14it. I'm tripping.
- 11:16I smoked too much. Duh. Does that mean I
- 11:19can fouse row dah this place?
- 11:24At the dragon burial site, some dragon
- 11:26named Aldwin spit out some dragon
- 11:29gibberish
- 11:34and summoned another dragon. I guess
- 11:36he's the one who is bringing the dragons
- 11:38back to life. With the dragon slain,
- 11:40Deline wanted to meet back up in
- 11:42Riverwood. Meet me back in Riverwood.
- 11:44That's like halfway across the map.
- 11:45Luckily, I can fast travel, but I was
- 11:47curious to see if Deline would actually
- 11:49run all the way back, or would she just
- 11:51disappear after a few moments and
- 11:52teleport there like in other games? I
- 11:54followed her for a while, and I think
- 11:56she really is going to run all the way
- 11:58back to Riverwood. One developer sat in
- 12:00his office sometime before the game
- 12:02release and is responsible for making
- 12:04sure Deli pathed all the way back to
- 12:06Riverwood. Batman deserves a raise. When
- 12:08we did meet in Riverwood, I was given
- 12:10the plan of sneaking into a party and
- 12:12retrieving clues about the dragons that
- 12:14the Thalmore might know. You'll have to
- 12:16slip away from the party without raising
- 12:18the alarm. This appeared to be the
- 12:19perfect quest for someone who is
- 12:21leveling up, sneaking, pickpocketing,
- 12:23and lockpicking. I haven't been this
- 12:24excited for a quest in a video game for
- 12:26a long time. Here's the deal. I can
- 12:29smuggle some equipment into the embassy
- 12:31for you. If you actually want to get out
- 12:32alive, I'd bring whatever you need to
- 12:34move quietly and kill quickly.
- 12:37[Music]
- 12:38Fellow late comer to Ellen's little
- 12:42suaree and arriving by carriage no less.
- 12:45I salute you, sir. Order, welcome back,
- 12:47sir. Please proceed into the embassy.
- 12:53You made it in. Good. As soon as you
- 12:55distract the guards, I'll open this
- 12:57door, get you on your way. Let's hope we
- 13:00both live through this day. Need to
- 13:02figure out, I guess, a way to create a
- 13:04distraction.
- 13:06Nope.
- 13:07Nope. Nope. Nope. Not here. Nope. It has
- 13:12to be something to do with this me. Oh,
- 13:14yeah. There was an alcoholic I met
- 13:17outside. He's He's sitting right here
- 13:19kind of staring at me. You could say
- 13:21that causing a scene is somewhat of a
- 13:24specialty of mine. Stand back and behold
- 13:27my handiwork. Once I got in the back, I
- 13:30struggled to figure out what to do. I
- 13:32don't know if the quest got bugged or
- 13:34something, but my gear was not in the
- 13:35chest that it said it would be in
- 13:37without a weapon or any gear. I tried to
- 13:39figure out a way to sneak around the
- 13:40guards, but I was getting nowhere.
- 13:42There's a simpler way to do this, but I
- 13:44could not figure it out. Because of
- 13:45that, I died quite a few times in the
- 13:47Thalmore Embassy, but I learned a
- 13:49valuable lesson. Make sure to quick save
- 13:51if you make any progress because going
- 13:52back to a previous load, in this case,
- 13:55the entrance of the embassy, it was
- 13:57getting kind of old. After some trial
- 13:59and error and basically giving up, I
- 14:01found a safe place on these rafters and
- 14:03cheeses my way through. Overall, the
- 14:05quest was pretty fun, but I wish I had a
- 14:07little more sneaking around to it. Maybe
- 14:09I was doing things completely wrong, but
- 14:11keeping unseen was impossible. Instead
- 14:13of continuing with the main quest, I
- 14:15diverted a little and completed a quick
- 14:17side quest. I was rewarded with a few
- 14:19spell to one with the ability to detect
- 14:22life through walls. How cool is that? In
- 14:25real life, you could use that power to
- 14:26see if anyone is in the stall you want
- 14:28to use. No more awkward knocking. Sorry.
- 14:31Anyways, I'm beginning to notice that
- 14:33the side quests may just be as important
- 14:35as the main quests. With every hour of
- 14:37gameplay, I'm learning Skyrim is so much
- 14:39more involved than I ever could have
- 14:41imagined. Just how deep does this game
- 14:43go? Though I have the ability to fast
- 14:45travel, I I found that walking on the
- 14:47roads and paths to the next quest was
- 14:49the best way to discover new things.
- 14:51Locals asked for my help or wanted to
- 14:53play Tag. Tag or hide-and-seek? You're
- 14:55too slow.
- 14:57Leave me alone. I lost, by the way.
- 15:00Forts and landmarks were great for a
- 15:02quick raid and pilfering. And the music
- 15:04and ambience danced as you discovered
- 15:06zones or suddenly found yourself in
- 15:08combat with a wolf. Everything was
- 15:10perfect. When I arrived at Riftton, I
- 15:12knew this would be the place I spent a
- 15:14lot of time at. Welcome to Riftton, home
- 15:16of the Thieves Guild. Or so they'd have
- 15:19you believe. A place for thieves and
- 15:21vermin. Count me in. Bin Yol, a member
- 15:23of the Thieves Guild who I met 2 minutes
- 15:25ago, commanded that I steal something to
- 15:27prove I'm worth his time. You're going
- 15:29to have to sneak over to Messi stall and
- 15:31use your lockpick on the strong box. I
- 15:34failed, but he accepted me anyway. Even
- 15:36though you fouled up the job, I still
- 15:38think you've got the spark I'm looking
- 15:40for. This reminded me, up until now, I
- 15:43haven't figured out how to level up my
- 15:44sneak ability. I understand how it
- 15:46works. You crouch and try to remain
- 15:48unseen, but doing so did nothing to my
- 15:52skill. I've got to figure out how to
- 15:53level that up. As I was chatting to
- 15:54Brinol, I noticed that what I was doing
- 15:57was not part of the main quest. In fact,
- 15:59I'm kind of lost on what is or isn't the
- 16:01main quest. I was given the special
- 16:03edition of Skyrim, which said there's
- 16:05some DLC included, and I can't figure
- 16:07out what quest leads to what. So instead
- 16:09of pursuing the Thieves Guild, I
- 16:11reluctantly chose to continue the quest
- 16:13line that left off in the Thelmore
- 16:15party, as to not drift too far from the
- 16:17main quest. It's okay. The Thieves Guild
- 16:19would still be here when I came back
- 16:20later. My next objective was to meet
- 16:22with an old guy named Esburn, one of the
- 16:24last remaining blades who was captured
- 16:27by the Falmore. Now, he was dooming
- 16:29pretty hard. Oh yes, it's all been
- 16:31foretold. The end has begun. Unless
- 16:34there's a dragon born in the picture,
- 16:36which turned out to be the biggest
- 16:38switch up of the year once he learned
- 16:40this. You can see the depression melt
- 16:42away in real time. What you are? Can it
- 16:46really be true? Then there is hope. The
- 16:49gods have not abandoned us. We must we
- 16:52must we must go quickly now. Now, this
- 16:55is where I truly lost myself on my
- 16:57playthrough. Through aimless wander, I
- 16:59bumped into the quest that takes you to
- 17:00Soulstein, where I was to learn more
- 17:02about a guy named Mirra, someone the
- 17:05locals were obviously covering up for.
- 17:07Mirra, I I'm not sure. From my
- 17:12understanding now, Soulstein stuff is
- 17:14DLC. I think dealing with Aldwin is the
- 17:16main quest, but this Soulstein place
- 17:18felt important, too. Genuinely intrigued
- 17:20by who Mira is and why this place felt
- 17:23so dreary, I trudged onward. In order to
- 17:26learn more about Mirak, I'd have to
- 17:28visit his temple. This temple, plagued
- 17:30by Mirak himself, was another impressive
- 17:33section of the game. The unsettling
- 17:35ambient drones, the clacking noise of
- 17:37the hammers in the distance. The NPC's
- 17:40murmurss of nonsense all added to the
- 17:42uneasy feeling. Freya, the daughter of
- 17:44the shamans whose town resided not far
- 17:47from the temple, confirmed my
- 17:48suspicions. Something has taken control
- 17:51of most of the people of Soulstein. The
- 17:53NPCs were under some type of spell. It
- 17:55was here where Freya told me the story
- 17:58of Mirra, a servant to dragons of the
- 18:00past. He turned on them as he sought
- 18:02power to take over Soulstein. His
- 18:04betrayal cost him his life, at least
- 18:06part of it. But before I could learn
- 18:08more, some cultists interrupted the
- 18:10conversation with
- 18:13fire. Below the temple in its heart, I
- 18:16learned a new shout, dragon aspect. I'll
- 18:18admit it again. I don't know what I'm
- 18:20doing, but I found this shout useless. I
- 18:23swear my punches healed my
- 18:26enemies, and apparently it's only usable
- 18:29once a day. My arms looked cool, but my
- 18:31damage did not. The gatekeeper and his
- 18:33army of jogger murdered me several times
- 18:36until I finally abandoned the dragon
- 18:38aspect shout entirely and started using
- 18:40my flame atronaut. He was able to steal
- 18:42some aggro from the gatekeeper. As I
- 18:44stabbed them in the back, I looted the
- 18:45dead zombie guys and entered the final
- 18:47pathway to the core of the temple.
- 18:50Inside stood a black book. Damn, does
- 18:53this thing look cursed. I was teleported
- 18:54to an alternate universe. And wow, this
- 18:58game keeps surprising me. This is not an
- 19:00ordinary RPG game. We're dealing with
- 19:02alternate universes, special dragon
- 19:05powers, and a rich and deep story. Here,
- 19:08I met Mira, a dragon born like me. This
- 19:10Mirra guy complimented my talents as a
- 19:13dragon born. You have done little beyond
- 19:16killing a few dragons. And said we'd
- 19:18meet later on and basically blew me off.
- 19:20I love this type of story, by the way.
- 19:22You're apparently one of a kind, dragon
- 19:24born, capable of saving Skyrim by
- 19:26defeating the dragons, the chosen one,
- 19:29except an evil version of you shows up,
- 19:32much more powerful than you are, who is
- 19:34years ahead of your training. The
- 19:36foreshadowing of the eventual mighty
- 19:38clash between old and new, good and
- 19:40evil, seemed inevitable. I can't wait to
- 19:42take them on when I learned whatever it
- 19:44is I need to learn first. So great, all
- 19:47I have to do is find more Nordic dragon
- 19:48born shouts and absorb as many dragon
- 19:51souls as possible.
- 19:56Oh, that's mine. I grow stronger,
- 20:00Dragon.
- 20:07God damn it. That was mine. Oh, and
- 20:10guess what? I finally learned how to
- 20:12level up my sneak more reliably. So, if
- 20:14you get halfway caught by enemies and
- 20:17keep yourself crouched and hidden, your
- 20:18detection gets reset and your sneak can
- 20:20level up. It turns out though, sneaking
- 20:23is not that good. At the water stone, a
- 20:25landmark that I needed to use bend will
- 20:27on was the first unbeatable portion of
- 20:29the game for me. Leveling up my sneak
- 20:31ability has been rewarding for moving
- 20:33through some caves more easily and
- 20:35grabbing a bit of extra gold, but in the
- 20:37wide open with an angered lurker, a
- 20:39dragon, and a cultist attacking me,
- 20:42useless. So, I decided to skip this
- 20:44Mirra quest line stuff for now and head
- 20:46back to the main area of Skyrim and
- 20:47continue with the other main quest line
- 20:49involving Aldwin. At least until I got
- 20:52stronger. Maybe I'm a genius, but the
- 20:54few puzzles I've run into so far in
- 20:56Skyrim are all easy. Still, it's a nice
- 20:58break up from the normal cave
- 21:00experience. At the peak of the temple,
- 21:02Eburn spilled a ton of history on who
- 21:04Aldwin was. Keeping it simple, Aldwin
- 21:06ruled the dragons, and the dragons ruled
- 21:08over the world. Then, the humans
- 21:10rebelled against him. With the use of a
- 21:12special shout, the first of the dragon
- 21:14borns were able to defeat him. This
- 21:16shout was the answer to defeating
- 21:18Aldwin. I have to admit, the fact that
- 21:20we're dealing with something like shouts
- 21:21is so unique. Bethesda could have taken
- 21:23the easy route and made the character
- 21:25powerful through more traditional
- 21:26styles. I'll reiterate the fact that I'm
- 21:28not an RPG type of gamer, so I may just
- 21:31be ignorant, but it's refreshing to play
- 21:32a game that has power used in a clever
- 21:34way, expertly incorporated into the
- 21:36story at the same time. I'm bouncing
- 21:38between main quests and side quests, and
- 21:40I know all of you have seen and played
- 21:41this game for nearly 15 years now, but
- 21:43Meridia's quest was awesome. This
- 21:45spectral being drew me upwards in the
- 21:47sky, higher than the dragons, and told
- 21:49me of her story. I don't know why this
- 21:51quest was so cool to me, but it was
- 21:53dinner time when I started this quest,
- 21:55and I could not get off until I finished
- 21:57it. I don't think I ate dinner that
- 21:59night, and I wasn't even upset. I I love
- 22:01when a game gives you this feeling. The
- 22:02cave involved with the quest had its own
- 22:04little puzzles, but the end of the quest
- 22:06gave me the most trouble. Malaron, the
- 22:09defiler of Meridia Stone or Sword or
- 22:11whatever, was not an ordinary NPC. This
- 22:14dude oneshot me with his ice moves.
- 22:17Huh? I got one shot. This is when I knew
- 22:20I'd messed up with my build, and I had
- 22:22some regrets for going with the sneaky
- 22:24talents. Several minutes of attempts
- 22:26later, I was ready to call it. Whoa,
- 22:29whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 22:33whoa. Okay, but for some reason, I
- 22:36decided to stick with it for a few more
- 22:37tries. That's right. I've been
- 22:39collecting these scrolls, and one of
- 22:41them was called Firestorm. Having played
- 22:43Pokémon, I knew fire beats ice.
- 22:50It did nothing. Granted, I missed, but I
- 22:53wouldn't survive long enough anyways to
- 22:54use it correctly. Time to call it. I
- 22:57refused to load an earlier save. And
- 23:00instead, I crouched. I became hidden in
- 23:03the shadows. Oh my god, what if I could
- 23:05get close to him and get some free
- 23:07damage in? Carefully, I crept down the
- 23:10stairs. Meron stood in the middle of the
- 23:12door, his back turned to me. What a
- 23:15vulnerable position. I crept ever
- 23:17closer, still
- 23:19[Music]
- 23:21unseen. Bro is half dead on one swing.
- 23:25Sneaking is overpowered. The skill point
- 23:27I put in backstab, the one that
- 23:29increases the damage you do to someone
- 23:31if you're undetected, proved to be very,
- 23:34very useful. Mearon wasn't dead yet, so
- 23:36in a panic, I dashed back to the door,
- 23:38attempting to become unseen again. This
- 23:41time, it did not work. But I had another
- 23:43trick up my sleeve.
- 23:45Once I was safe and undetected, Melkaron
- 23:48again showed me his
- 23:49backside. I am so glad I did this quest.
- 23:52The icing on the cake to learning how
- 23:54good my build could be was the fact that
- 23:56the Dawn Breaker is a one-handed weapon.
- 23:59It almost looks like I've played this
- 24:00game before with how perfect this quest
- 24:02is for what I'm leveling up. If I hadn't
- 24:04already decided if I'd continue playing
- 24:06or not, now would be that time. This
- 24:08side quest solidified it for me. Skyrim
- 24:10is a great game. I felt so rewarded for
- 24:12my adventures and the fact that I did
- 24:14this all through happen stance made it
- 24:16even better. Signs of a well-made game.
- 24:18Now we're playing Now we're playing the
- 24:27game. Our hero our hero claims a
- 24:30warrior's heart. I tell you, I tell you,
- 24:35the dragon born comes where the voice
- 24:38wielding power of the ancient Nord.
- 24:42Believe, believe, the dragon born comes.
- 24:46Dawn Guard is the home of a group of
- 24:48people who are against vampires. I
- 24:50joined their order and was sent to
- 24:52uncover a cave. This was the coolest
- 24:54cave I've explored by far. The puzzle at
- 24:57the end took a little more brain power
- 24:59than some others, and once solved, a
- 25:01monolith appeared which held a vampire
- 25:04within it. Cool. I accompanied her back
- 25:06to her vampire home. Feeling like some
- 25:09sort of teenager who started dating the
- 25:10emo chick from school. And now she's
- 25:13taken me home to meet her other creepy
- 25:14family members. I was down with it.
- 25:16Vulkahar Keep housed Skyrim's vampires,
- 25:20a welcoming place. I made a decision
- 25:22here that I'd later regret. Through his
- 25:25impressive display, Lord Harkin
- 25:27convinced me to adopt a new power.
- 25:29Intimidated while also wanting to have
- 25:31better chances with his daughter, I
- 25:33became a
- 25:39vampire. Skyrim is crazy. Like, I was so
- 25:42wrong thinking that this game was
- 25:44another medieval RPG. I thought I would
- 25:46be spending time at a house in town
- 25:47smithing swords and claiming land. No,
- 25:50I'm a freaking vampire. It has its own
- 25:52skill tree, unique abilities, and you
- 25:54can switch between the two easily.
- 25:56What's not to love about being a
- 25:58vampire? Your powers. The
- 26:01sunlight. That is something not to love
- 26:03about being a vampire. During the day, I
- 26:06have reduced health, magicka, and I
- 26:08don't recover stamina. I hate it. The
- 26:10novelty of being a vampire has worn off
- 26:12already, and I actually kind of prefer
- 26:14being sneaky and using my sword. So, now
- 26:16I've just complicated my playthrough.
- 26:18I've been sidetracked enough. So, I
- 26:20hopped back on the main quest and headed
- 26:21to the Greybeards, who sent me up the
- 26:23mountain to meet a guy named Parthanax.
- 26:25Oh, sorry. He's a dragon. He talked
- 26:27about the Elder Scroll. You know, the
- 26:29name of the game, and dropped some crazy
- 26:31knowledge on us. Aldoin was defeated all
- 26:34those years ago, but wasn't fully
- 26:35killed. He was sent forward in time by
- 26:38the use of the Elder Scroll. My
- 26:40objective now is to retrieve the scroll,
- 26:42use it to go back in time to when Aldin
- 26:45was defeated, and learn the shout that
- 26:47took him down. I think we've pretty much
- 26:48seen it all in Skyrim. Alternate
- 26:50universes, time travel, and dragons
- 26:52breaking the game, floating endlessly
- 26:54through the sky. I mean, look at this.
- 26:56He is so glitched. But now we must be
- 26:58getting closer to the end. The Elder
- 27:00Scroll is not an ordinary artifact. At
- 27:02the college, the scholar there made me
- 27:04feel dumb for even asking about the
- 27:06scroll. I haven't played any of the
- 27:07other games, so I had no idea what the
- 27:09scroll was even about. So, I actually
- 27:11read the books that the scholar told me
- 27:13to read. I learned that it lay deep
- 27:15within the Tower of Maz where I came
- 27:17across other adventurers seeking its
- 27:19knowledge. Though they weren't as strong
- 27:21as me. The Tower of Maz led me to Black
- 27:24Reach, the ancient dwarven city, a
- 27:26beautiful bioluminescent landscape. This
- 27:29place was breathtaking. Deep within
- 27:31Black Reach existed a room and
- 27:33contraption that held the Elder Scroll.
- 27:35I think you were supposed to feel like
- 27:37this was the most sacred and protected
- 27:39item in Skyrim. And they nailed that
- 27:41feeling. I took it back to the throat of
- 27:42the world, aka your mom's place, also
- 27:44the death place of Aldwin, and opened up
- 27:47the scroll and began to read it. I did
- 27:49not go blind. Instead, I was teleported
- 27:52back in time to a cut scene of Aldwin's
- 27:54demise. I felt like I was watching a
- 27:56movie. It was there where I learned the
- 27:58shout dragon rend. The shout that would
- 28:01mortalize Aldwin. Shortly after, and I
- 28:03mean really shortly, I was face to face
- 28:06with Aldwin in real time. Time to face
- 28:08the World Eater.
- 28:11Remember how I said sneaking was bad in
- 28:14the middle of the open? This is one of
- 28:15those times. And it's also daytime, so I
- 28:18don't have stamina either because I'm a
- 28:19stupid vampire. Now, the fight against
- 28:21Aldwin was pretty intense, to say the
- 28:22least. And I had no idea how to go about
- 28:25this. With fireballs raining down from
- 28:27above and no chance to run away when he
- 28:30shot fire at me, I was doomed. After 30
- 28:33minutes, a fairly long time I'd
- 28:35consider, I finally found the answer to
- 28:37killing him. It would be slow, but every
- 28:40time he landed, I could get a swing or
- 28:42two off, then go ethereal and take no
- 28:45damage from his breath. It was slow and
- 28:47painful with a few extra deaths, but
- 28:49eventually I slayed Aldwin. The story is
- 28:52getting more and more exhilarating every
- 28:54step. And though Aldwin escaped, this
- 28:56time he was weakened. The fight isn't
- 28:59over, but our good friend Parthonax here
- 29:01had the idea of trapping one of Aldwin's
- 29:03followers, a dragon named Oding. Once
- 29:06captured, he'd spill the beans on
- 29:08Aldwin's location. All we had to do was
- 29:10lure him into Whiterun, the town that
- 29:12was literally built to capture dragons
- 29:14long ago. It wouldn't be that simple
- 29:16since Whiter Run would be vulnerable to
- 29:18an attack from the Imperials. Yeah,
- 29:19Skyrim has more going on with it than
- 29:21just the dragon problem. Maybe the
- 29:23reason these gray skins don't help in
- 29:24the war is because they're Imperial
- 29:26spies. Now, I'm from America and
- 29:28politics have been kind of crazy lately.
- 29:31So when I was tasked to get the
- 29:32Imperials and the Stormcloaks to sit at
- 29:34a dinner table together to hold a peace
- 29:36council with the goal of a ceasefire, I
- 29:39was more than ready.
- 29:43[Music]
- 29:46Anyone else going to sit? Really?
- 29:49Now that everyone is here, please take
- 29:52your seats. Yeah, please. So we can
- 29:54begin. To think that I would sit down at
- 29:56the same table with that thou more
- 29:59Ooh, she walks or I do. As you
- 30:02can see, tensions are pretty high in
- 30:04Skyrim at the moment. Think of it as the
- 30:06Democrats on the left side of the table
- 30:07and the Republicans on the right. The
- 30:09Republicans just want to worship Talos,
- 30:11I guess, some man who ascended into
- 30:13godhood. I I don't really know. And the
- 30:15Imperials belong to the Empire and want
- 30:18all of Skyrim to follow its rules. It's
- 30:20all convoluted. And this dinner made
- 30:22things even more confusing for me. My
- 30:24participation at the dinner was, I
- 30:26guess, to help negotiate the deals of
- 30:29the peace treaty. I I have no business
- 30:31negotiating the deals of the peace
- 30:33treaty. I'd like to hear what you think
- 30:35Mark is worth.
- 30:37I don't even know what Mark Hearth is. I
- 30:38got to be honest. I did make sure that
- 30:40the Imperials did not get Riftton from
- 30:42the Stormcloaks because I I like
- 30:44Riftton. It's possible I negotiated the
- 30:46worst terms possible, but it seemed the
- 30:48ceasefire would be upheld by both sides
- 30:50and we could get back to trapping Oding
- 30:52in Whiterun. With the complications of
- 30:55war temporarily halted, I entered Whiter
- 30:57Run and called down Odivane. You'd think
- 30:59a dragon who has been around since
- 31:01basically the beginning of time would
- 31:03know that this place is used to capture
- 31:05dragons, but he showed up anyway.
- 31:16Woo! We got him, dumbass. Odoving folded
- 31:19quickly and told us everything. A world
- 31:21class betrayal. But I guess ever since I
- 31:24almost ended Aldwin, word got around and
- 31:26the dragon's loyalty towards Aldwin was
- 31:28beginning to waver. A couple of lines of
- 31:30dialogue later, and Odoving and I were
- 31:32flying together to Scalden, an ancient
- 31:34Nordic temple that houses the only known
- 31:37portal to Svenguard. combined with my
- 31:39new powerful shouts, my one-handed
- 31:41prowess, and low stamina vampiric
- 31:44powers, which I've never used. The time
- 31:46has come to end Aldwin once and
- 31:52for working my way through Skull Doppin
- 31:55was great. I found some dope leather
- 31:56boots from this dragon, which increased
- 31:58my sneaking by 20%. Then the skeletons
- 32:01trapped me between some rocks and took
- 32:03turns poking at me until my death.
- 32:08But then I met my worst nightmare once
- 32:10again. The claw doors. Since I brute
- 32:13forced my way through them last time, I
- 32:15I still have no idea how they work. And
- 32:17just like last time, I don't have the
- 32:19stupid claw in my inventory. I walked
- 32:21back through the whole cave yet again.
- 32:23But unlike last time, there was no claw
- 32:25on the previous enemies I killed. Thank
- 32:27goodness I was in Discord with my friend
- 32:29because without him, I don't know how
- 32:31much time I would have wasted. The Look
- 32:33at the key. Look at it in your
- 32:35inventory. Inspect it. There you go. At
- 32:40the top of school dolphin, I found the
- 32:42portal to Sovenguard. Entering
- 32:44Sovenguard, my emotions shifted to a
- 32:46solemn feeling. Surely, this was the
- 32:48pinnacle of the quest line. I just
- 32:50entered the zone of the dignified dead,
- 32:52where the mighty fallen go and spend
- 32:55eternity. I knew once I completed this,
- 32:57it's likely I was through my dragon born
- 32:59adventures. That bittersweet feeling was
- 33:02amplified by the special Nordic chants
- 33:04that pounded in my ears.
- 33:11The dragon spine bridge to the Hall of
- 33:13Valor gave that same feeling of awe as
- 33:15other newly discovered locations gave
- 33:17me. This one was more epic, of course.
- 33:19Inside stood three of the bravest
- 33:21warriors Skyrim has ever seen. I joined
- 33:23them proudly, but it did feel a little
- 33:25unfair to go into battle with them since
- 33:27they're dead already, so they had
- 33:29nothing to lose.
- 33:34The eyes of shore
- 33:35[Music]
- 33:37are shadows.
- 33:43His strength is failing once more and
- 33:45his might will be broken.
- 33:58Now, what I'm about to say may be a hot
- 34:00take, but the finale of this quest did
- 34:02not live up to the buildup. First,
- 34:04Gormlith's Fouse Roda killed the mood
- 34:07with how lame it sounded.
- 34:09I don't know, maybe I'm just being a
- 34:11little picky, but hearing her shout
- 34:12actually took something away from the
- 34:14battle. And then Aldwin just kind of
- 34:15stood there. I slashed my sword around
- 34:18and his health dwindled. I thought he'd
- 34:19have some sort of last stand, some final
- 34:22effort that I'd have to work past with
- 34:23some more shouts or puzzles, but instead
- 34:26he did nothing until he died. The
- 34:28explosion was kind of cool, but in an
- 34:30instant, it was all over. A quiet piece
- 34:34swept over Soard as soon the gatekeeper
- 34:36of the Hall of Valor sung my praises. I
- 34:39don't know, it felt a little too quick
- 34:41and a little too easy, even for me with
- 34:43my terrible build. The quietness was
- 34:46loud.
- 34:48This quest will ensure I felt I should
- 34:51have done more leading up to this
- 34:52moment. Maybe completed more side
- 34:54quests, mastered more skills, or
- 34:56explored more. The feeling was the
- 34:58feeling you get when you finish a good
- 35:00series and you know there's nothing else
- 35:01to see. I could have ended my
- 35:03playthrough here, but I didn't want it
- 35:05to end. I wanted more. Hail him with
- 35:08great praise.
- 35:13And then I remembered a while back when
- 35:15I was in Riftton amongst the thieves of
- 35:17the Thieves Guild. I said I'd return one
- 35:19day and finish a quest line, and boy am
- 35:21I glad I did. I chose the path of
- 35:23sneakiness early on, and becoming a full
- 35:25member of the Thieves Guild was exactly
- 35:27the type of gameplay I seek. For the
- 35:29moment, my Skyrim playthrough was not
- 35:31over. Welcome to the family life. This
- 35:33quest line had you sneaking into rich
- 35:35people's estates, set beehives on fire
- 35:37without getting caught. I stole an old
- 35:39man's jeweled pitcher, which I wasn't
- 35:41supposed to get caught doing, but I did.
- 35:43You're not supposed to be in here. And
- 35:45the whole point of the Thieves Guild was
- 35:47to earn money. So when I paid the guard
- 35:49off with more gold than I'd be rewarded
- 35:51with at the end of the quest, that felt
- 35:52counterproductive. Everything here
- 35:54appears to be in order. The reward for
- 35:56finishing this quest line was sick.
- 35:57There were three choices to make, all
- 35:59granting additional powers as a thief,
- 36:01but I settled on becoming an agent of
- 36:03stealth. On moonlight nights or in
- 36:05darkened rooms, this agent literally
- 36:07becomes invisible. I also became the new
- 36:10leader of the Thieves Guild. I don't
- 36:11know what the other guilds and quests
- 36:13look like out there, but I think I can
- 36:14safely say I chose the coolest one. Once
- 36:17that was done, I again thought my
- 36:19playthrough was over until I remembered
- 36:21I hadn't defeated Mirra yet. When I
- 36:23thought I'd witnessed all of Skyrim, I
- 36:25couldn't be more wrong. The next few
- 36:26hours of my life felt like I was living
- 36:28a fever dream. Hermes Mora's spooky
- 36:30realm where Mirra resides was insane.
- 36:34I've already complained a little bit
- 36:35about the puzzles being too boring or
- 36:37too obvious to solve, but this place
- 36:39really nailed them. My reward for
- 36:40entering and working through this realm
- 36:42was mastery of the bend will shout. This
- 36:45granted me the power to control the
- 36:47people around me and even dragons. At
- 36:49the temple of Mirra, I took down my
- 36:51dragon born evil twin and that was that.
- 36:54I beat Skyrim, or at least the parts I
- 36:56wanted to complete. I'm sure if I went
- 36:58looking, I'd find some maniac who 100%
- 37:01completed this game. 100% in all skills,
- 37:04all caves explored, every dragon killed,
- 37:06all women laid with. I don't wish to do
- 37:08that. So, is Skyrim good even without
- 37:11the nostalgia? My answer is yes. I think
- 37:15the reason why Skyrim has lasted the
- 37:17test of time is because it truly
- 37:19immerses you into its world. The details
- 37:21of the game are almost unimportant. The
- 37:24feeling is what I'm basing my conclusion
- 37:26on, and I feel fulfilled that I've
- 37:29participated in Skyrim. But now, I'm
- 37:31torn on something. Is it sad that my
- 37:3416-year-old self did not get to
- 37:36experience this game for the first time?
- 37:37or am I happy that my 30-year-old self
- 37:40got to experience that? I don't know the
- 37:42answer. But in about 5 years, or
- 37:45whatever time it takes to grow nostalgia
- 37:47about something, I know I'll be right
- 37:48there with all of you, longing to become
- 37:51dragon born again.
- 38:01Oh my
- 38:02god. Oh god.
