- 0:00Oily water separator.
- 0:03See the operation of an oily water
- 0:04separator with a 15 ppm monitor. The
- 0:08separation of oil water in the separator
- 0:10takes place in two stages. In the first
- 0:13stage, the separation is by gravity,
- 0:16whereas in the second stage, the
- 0:17separation is by coalescing filters.
- 0:20Bilge pump delivers clean sea water to
- 0:23the first stage of the separator through
- 0:25the inlet valve. The vent is kept open
- 0:28till all the air is removed from the
- 0:30separator and water issues out.
- 0:34Oily water is delivered to the
- 0:36separator. As it enters through the
- 0:38inlet valve, oil separates by gravity
- 0:41and collects at the top of the
- 0:42separator. The remaining oil sticks to
- 0:45the baffle plates as the water passes to
- 0:47the second stage. Oil droplets from the
- 0:49plates tend to travel upwards to the oil
- 0:52collection space.
- 0:54Oil from the top of the chamber is
- 0:56automatically drained to the oil tank
- 0:59where the level reaches the bottom of
- 1:00the sensor as shown. The oil drain valve
- 1:03from the top of the first stage
- 1:05separator is a diaphragm controlled
- 1:07piston valve. Control air is supplied to
- 1:10the diaphragm through a solenoid
- 1:12operated pilot valve. The capacitance
- 1:15probe senses oil quantity in the
- 1:17collection space and energizes the
- 1:19solenoid through the control switch.
- 1:22Water passes downwards from the first to
- 1:25the second stage coalescer through a
- 1:27central pipe. The filter in the right
- 1:29chamber
- 1:30removes solids and some oil.
- 1:33Coalescing filters in the left chamber
- 1:36take out the remainder of the oil in the
- 1:38form of small droplets, which coalesce
- 1:40to form larger drops. These rise to the
- 1:43oil collecting space.
- 1:45Oil content of the final discharge is
- 1:48below 15 ppm. In case the discharge of
- 1:51water after the second stage is more
- 1:53than 15 ppm, the monitor senses this and
- 1:56gives an audible and visual alarm in the
- 1:58engine room. At the same time, the
- 2:01monitor sends a signal to the three-way
- 2:03valve on the overboard discharge line,
- 2:05which closes the overboard and opens to
- 2:08the bilge tank. The sensor reverts to
- 2:10normal operation once the oil content
- 2:13drops below 15 ppm.
- 2:16The test can be used to ascertain
- 2:18the levels of oil and water manually. A
- 2:20spring-loaded valve is usually fitted on
- 2:23both discharges. However, it is
- 2:26essential that a relief valve be
- 2:28provided on the shell or incoming
- 2:30mixture line to prevent overpressure and
- 2:33accidental discharge to a confined space
- 2:36or prevent overboard under all working
- 2:38conditions. Such a relief valve should
- 2:40be preferably led back to the suction
- 2:42side of the supply pump or to an
- 2:45overflow tank. The usual working
- 2:47pressure for the separator is in the
- 2:49region of two bar, that is, the pressure
- 2:51at which the spring-loaded water
- 2:53discharge valve is set. The relief valve
- 2:55is set about two and a half bar
- 2:57approximately.
