- 0:3819:49 Pablo Picasso was in search of a
- 0:41new medium when he could apply to any
- 0:43surface without preparation
- 0:45he approached on race and EEA about the
- 0:48matter and Andrzej obliged and created
- 0:50this unique medium that falls somewhere
- 0:52between drawing and painting eventually
- 0:54leading to the medium that we know today
- 0:56is oil pastels and we'll use oil pastels
- 1:01in this lesson as we create an
- 1:03impressionistic image of a field of
- 1:05flowers hi there everyone matt here with
- 1:07the virtual instructor comm and oil
- 1:09pastels are a medium somewhere between
- 1:11drawing and painting of course when we
- 1:14apply them to the surface the process is
- 1:16clearly drawing that our thought process
- 1:18needs to be more centered around the
- 1:20process of painting for this lesson
- 1:22we're gonna be working on cantonments
- 1:25pastel paper
- 1:26we'll use the heavier textured side of
- 1:28the paper working on an orange surface
- 1:30will also be using two different types
- 1:32of oil pastels we'll apply most of the
- 1:35pastels using Cinelli a oil pastels but
- 1:39for more of the detail parts will use
- 1:41the harder oil pastels made by Sakura
- 1:43the expressionist line so let's go ahead
- 1:47and dive right into this lesson we'll
- 1:54start here with a deep red by just
- 1:56basically planning out the overall
- 1:58shapes of each one of the flowers since
- 2:00we're working with oil pastels we're
- 2:02gonna concentrate on the elements in the
- 2:04middle ground and foreground first get
- 2:07them in place before addressing the
- 2:09background you can see here that even
- 2:11though this pastel is nice and soft
- 2:14we're still seeing some of the texture
- 2:16of the paper at this point this is fine
- 2:18because we're going to layer multiple
- 2:20applications over the top we'll continue
- 2:22working our way down the picture plane
- 2:24to the extreme foreground and it's okay
- 2:27to deviate if you're working from a
- 2:29photo reference now that we have our
- 2:32shapes of our larger flowers in place we
- 2:34can go in with a yellow green and this
- 2:37is a darker yellow green we'll start
- 2:39establishing some of the flowers and
- 2:41some of the individual pods as well
- 2:43you'll notice that these marks are
- 2:45loosely and quickly applied we're not
- 2:48going to be too concerned with the
- 2:50details in fact we're not going to be
- 2:51too concerned with the details
- 2:52throughout this painting we just want to
- 2:55get areas of color in place on the
- 2:57surface we'll continue working here in
- 3:01the foreground quickly filling in our
- 3:03areas of grain before moving on to
- 3:06addressing the sky we'll start here with
- 3:08a light blue starting at the top of the
- 3:10pitcher plane quickly working our way
- 3:12down to the middle ground and as we work
- 3:17will define the shapes of each one of
- 3:20the flowers as we work around each one
- 3:22of the stems and pods as well we'll work
- 3:26our way down into the foreground and add
- 3:28specks of blue showing through each one
- 3:31of the stems of the flowers since oil
- 3:33pastels are a looser medium we need to
- 3:36concentrate on shapes of light and dark
- 3:38value instead of worrying about the
- 3:40details we're only going to concentrate
- 3:41on shapes of lighter and darker value in
- 3:44order to create the illusion of light
- 3:46within the scene will allow our viewers
- 3:48imagination to fill in all the details
- 3:50on their own
- 3:56will now begin with a very dark red and
- 3:59this almost leans towards a brown
- 4:02filling in all of the shadowed areas on
- 4:05each one of the flowers here again we're
- 4:07going to use looser marks to describe
- 4:09the overall shapes of darker value that
- 4:12we see on each one of the flowers again
- 4:15working our way from the top of the
- 4:17pitcher play down to the lower portion
- 4:18of the pitcher play and since our light
- 4:21source originates from the upper
- 4:22left-hand corner most of these shadows
- 4:25will exist on the lower right-hand
- 4:26portion now we'll begin addressing some
- 4:33of the highlighted areas an areas of
- 4:35middle value here again we'll start at
- 4:37the top of the pitcher plane using a
- 4:39lighter version of red will go even
- 4:42lighter adding bits of peak and also
- 4:45warming up the color using bits of red
- 4:47orange and orange
- 4:49[Music]
- 5:01it's tempting to think about all the
- 5:04details that you may see on your subject
- 5:06but in this particular case we're going
- 5:08for a more impressionistic image meaning
- 5:11we're only concentrating on the shapes
- 5:13of color and value that we see we can
- 5:16often blur our eyes a bit to help us see
- 5:18this more clearly the direction of our
- 5:23stroke should be considered as well each
- 5:26mark that we make with the oil pastel
- 5:28can be thought of as a brush stroke and
- 5:30the direction of this brush stroke can
- 5:33help us communicate the form of each one
- 5:36of the flowers to our viewer without
- 5:38adding any details
- 5:40[Music]
- 5:47we can adjust the colors to our hearts
- 5:49content continuing to layer our original
- 5:52red and a variety of different red
- 5:54oranges
- 5:55lighter pinks in darker reds
- 6:06as colors are added mixing will
- 6:09naturally occur allow this to happen and
- 6:12embrace the painterly look that results
- 6:19at this point in the process I see that
- 6:22we need to add a bit more warmth so
- 6:24we'll grab a warmer yellow and add a few
- 6:27highlights primarily on the left side of
- 6:30each one of the flowers and on the top
- 6:32portion as well to make our painting
- 6:35appear unified we'll apply this to the
- 6:38majority of the flowers within the scene
- 6:41then we'll turn our attention to the
- 6:43foreground and begin adding a variety of
- 6:46different greens using strokes that flow
- 6:48upward just as each one of the plants
- 6:51grows
- 6:55we'll start over the top of our darker
- 6:58yellow green with a much lighter yellow
- 7:00grain
- 7:05we'll patiently pull-up each stroke into
- 7:08the sky and into the space in between
- 7:10each one of the flowers we'll also use a
- 7:14variety of different greens as well in
- 7:16this case a green that leans a bit more
- 7:18towards blue
- 7:21and here again we'll pull our strokes
- 7:24upward as each stem grows into the sky
- 7:28[Music]
- 7:31now we'll add some hints of shadow with
- 7:34a warm brown this Brown as you can see
- 7:37is a bit more neutral having some hints
- 7:39of grey associated with it
- 7:44you can also see that this additional
- 7:47contrast begins to create the illusion
- 7:49of many different stems
- 7:53we have to remember that shadows and
- 7:55highlights also have color associated
- 7:57with them we can't expect to lay down
- 7:59some black and some white and create
- 8:01convincing shadows and highlights that
- 8:04would make our image look flat and
- 8:05unnatural and when we're dealing with
- 8:07the color light green we need to
- 8:08consider the colors that mix to create
- 8:10green green is created by combining
- 8:12yellow and blue of course yellow is the
- 8:15warmer and lighter version of both of
- 8:17those colors so it makes sense to use
- 8:19yellow in our highlighted areas for our
- 8:21shadowed areas we'll allow a little bit
- 8:23more of the blue to creep in to create
- 8:25more realistic shadows now we'll do just
- 8:29that taking a darker blue addressing
- 8:32some of the shadowed areas in the grassy
- 8:34area at the bottom of the picture plane
- 8:35and here again we'll pull strokes upward
- 8:38just as each one of the stems grows
- 8:42now we'll take a slightly darker blue
- 8:45than we used originally for the sky and
- 8:47start at the top of the picture plane
- 8:49bringing down this darker blue allowing
- 8:51some of the lighter blue to show through
- 8:58and then on the lower portion will use a
- 9:00lighter blue and then the blue that we
- 9:02used originally working our way up from
- 9:05the bottom to the top creating a
- 9:07transition between light and dark in
- 9:09between
- 9:09[Music]
- 9:15and as we continue these varieties of
- 9:18glues will continue to define the edges
- 9:21of each one of the flowers using the
- 9:24blue to define those edges
- 9:29we can revisit the original glue that we
- 9:32used to ease this transition from
- 9:34slightly darker blue at the top to
- 9:37slightly lighter blue at the bottom
- 9:42[Music]
- 9:46now we'll begin bringing out some
- 9:48additional warmth in the grassy stems in
- 9:51the foreground using a much lighter and
- 9:53warmer yellow-green you can see here how
- 9:56the variety of greens is adding depth to
- 9:59the seen variety and color
- 10:01and also the illusion of space here
- 10:06again we'll pull strokes upward allowing
- 10:08the colors to mix as we go over the top
- 10:10of them
- 10:13you can see adding a little bit of twist
- 10:15as you pull each mark up adds a little
- 10:18bit more control we'll also add some
- 10:23highlights to each one of the pods that
- 10:24we've included in our scene these
- 10:28highlights exist primarily on the left
- 10:30side of each one of the pods will still
- 10:33allow some of the mid-tone of the green
- 10:35to show through and then it's back to
- 10:39the foreground pulling up additional
- 10:41strokes of this wonderful light
- 10:43yellow-green
- 10:47we'll go even lighter and make these
- 10:49highlights much stronger with a very
- 10:52light yellow green again allowing each
- 10:55one of the greens that we've previously
- 10:57applied to show through in areas you can
- 11:03see here how easily additional
- 11:05applications of oil pastel completely
- 11:08cover the applications underneath
- 11:10allowing us so much versatility and
- 11:13allowing us to make mistakes and fix
- 11:16them if we need to so it's important to
- 11:19be free with your marks being loose with
- 11:21your marks be deliberate and don't be
- 11:23afraid
- 11:24[Music]
- 11:44now we'll switch over to the harder
- 11:47expressionist pastels by Sakura these
- 11:50pastels will allow us to make more
- 11:52deliberate marks and give us a little
- 11:54bit more control since the pastel
- 11:56material itself is much harder you can
- 12:00see here I'm using the very end or the
- 12:03tip of the pastel to create these
- 12:05defined lines in fact these pastels are
- 12:09so much harder than the Cinelli a
- 12:11pastels that they will dig right into
- 12:13the surface allowing you to create a
- 12:16variety of different effects you can see
- 12:18here we're using this darker Brown
- 12:20mainly to define some of the stems and
- 12:23also create hints of shadow here and
- 12:25there we'll also use a brighter and
- 12:27lighter yellow grain of the same brand
- 12:30of pastel to pull up a few highlights
- 12:32here and there
- 12:33[Music]
- 12:38we'll keep the highlights primarily on
- 12:40the left side of each one of the stems
- 12:42and will also allow a little bit of
- 12:45shadow underneath each one of the
- 12:46flowers to create the impression of a
- 12:48cast shadow on the stem beneath it
- 12:55now our image is starting to come
- 12:57together
- 12:58but we're still missing a few of those
- 13:00flowers here down on the lower part of
- 13:02the picture plane so we'll add them
- 13:04using a couple of brighter Reds we'll
- 13:06use the original red that we started
- 13:08with but we'll also use a brighter and
- 13:11stronger red orange and we'll also be
- 13:13sure to incorporate this color on some
- 13:15of the other flowers as well where we've
- 13:18muted some of the colors by our multiple
- 13:20applications these additional strong
- 13:26pops of color really start to bring the
- 13:28image together as the greens and the
- 13:30Reds begin to vibrate off of each other
- 13:42then it's back to our light blue again
- 13:45defining the edges of each one of the
- 13:47shapes that we've created as you can see
- 13:50here although we're using a very thick
- 13:52medium we still are able to create the
- 13:55illusion of lots of details without
- 13:58actually drawing or painting any of the
- 14:00details
- 14:04[Music]
- 14:11and then it's back to our dark-brown
- 14:15again again using the expressionist oil
- 14:18pastel to add a few more hints of some
- 14:21more stems here in the foreground
- 14:23[Music]
- 14:25and then of course a bit more blue
- 14:29adding some more shadows to our
- 14:32foreground
- 14:34[Music]
- 14:40we'll add a few more highlights as well
- 14:41with a lighter yellow green and then a
- 14:45much brighter yellow green
- 14:47[Music]
- 14:56and after our finishing touches have
- 14:59been added our oil pastel landscape of a
- 15:02field of poppies is complete
- 15:05[Music]
