  93. 4:03demonstrations
  94. 4:04for several years ever since the vietnam
  95. 4:06war and it doesn't seem to change the
  96. 4:08government's views at all
  97. 4:10i'm beginning to wonder whether the
  98. 4:11people really ruled the government as it
  99. 4:13was supposed to be

  194. 8:50they say they're stopping communism i
  195. 8:52don't
  196. 9:04[Laughter]

  202. 9:29he can't take that same white man over
  203. 9:31his shoulder

  212. 9:49gonna that
  213. 9:50you and everybody else took everything
  214. 9:53away from us
  215. 9:54and we're gonna get it back believe me
  216. 9:56when we say we gon
  217. 9:58get it back and you think this march
  218. 10:00will help you to get it back
  219. 10:01it's a piece it's a step forward
  220. 10:04you know you got there one step two
  221. 10:06steps three steps you can't just
  222. 10:09buy them to the top what do you think
  223. 10:11about this question of patriotism
  224. 10:13that uh you should be patriotic and send
  225. 10:14your kids to fight over in vietnam no
  226. 10:17but for what
  227. 10:19what what we gotta be patriotic for
  228. 10:22what you gave us didn't give us
  229. 10:24something why should we
  230. 10:26keep them fight for you you all got the
  231. 10:29best
  232. 10:30part the best house the best of
  233. 10:32everything
  234. 10:33when we get it we have to stop and pay
  235. 10:36all of our salary for rents
  236. 10:39so halfway get a decent place to live
  237. 10:42i got a house that is full of so much
  238. 10:44rapid even funny
  239. 10:46man and i'm working every day
  240. 10:49and i'm working for the state so the
  241. 10:51united states government that don't even
  242. 10:53give me nothing
  243. 10:55and i gotta pay all that rest for a raft
  244. 10:57to come eat the right food i put the
  245. 10:59right food out there
  246. 11:00and when i wake up in the morning the
  247. 11:02rashfood was going i don't know where
  248. 11:04the rice was
  249. 11:05maybe they look better than i do but
  250. 11:07they're right here
  251. 11:20i had about 60 days left 64 65 days left
  252. 11:24to do it
  253. 11:25on the nom downtown and uh
  254. 11:28i was singing a song that i made up from
  255. 11:31you know another tune and it was uh soon
  256. 11:34i'll be going back to uh
  257. 11:36where the rats on the roaches roam and
  258. 11:40this
  259. 11:40guy who was next to me said to me uh
  260. 11:43what do you mean
  261. 11:44you got rats in your house so i turned
  262. 11:47to him and he was a honk i turned to him
  263. 11:49and i said
  264. 11:50yeah i got rats and roaches in my house
  265. 11:52don't you have any in your
  266. 11:54and he said to me no he said he'd never
  267. 11:56seen a rat
  268. 11:58and it started me thinking because soon
  269. 12:00i would be going back home and he would
  270. 12:02be going back home
  271. 12:03i would be going back to the rats and
  272. 12:05the roaches because i knew they were
  273. 12:06that
  274. 12:07if you come home right now you can hear
  275. 12:08him if you're eating in my kitchen
  276. 12:10you'll hear him talking
  277. 12:11and and he would be going back to his uh
  278. 12:15nice california pad and for me
  279. 12:19the problem would begin again and for
  280. 12:21him there would be no problem
  281. 12:25[Applause]
  282. 12:37like the rest of the [ __ ] they
  283. 12:38don't want their child to go over in
  284. 12:40midnight i really don't want mine to
  285. 12:42figure out what it's all about yeah
  286. 12:45that's the only reason i'm a mother just
  287. 12:47like everybody i know they feel the same
  288. 12:49way like i feel
  289. 12:50why do you think that the black people
  290. 12:52are demonstrating against the world
  291. 12:53because more black going over than any
  292. 12:56other color
  293. 12:57they say that the death rate of the uh
  294. 12:59black gi
  295. 13:00is uh comparatively higher than the
  296. 13:02defeat of the white gi
  297. 13:04and i i i i would like to
  298. 13:07come right back to basic training or
  299. 13:09even further back to high school
  300. 13:12where uh you're in a ghetto and uh
  301. 13:16your mother is on welfare and your
  302. 13:17father left home and then you have to go
  303. 13:19out and get a job and quit high school
  304. 13:20for some
  305. 13:21reason or other and you don't finish
  306. 13:23high school or you do get high school
  307. 13:24education and it's not
  308. 13:26it's not uh on a level with the white
  309. 13:29high school and you go to take the army
  310. 13:31test and you score lower than the white
  311. 13:33guys
  312. 13:34and the next thing you know you're in
  313. 13:35the infantry and that's one reason
  314. 13:38another reason is that uh a black guy is
  315. 13:40seeing uh
  316. 13:41their bodies in infantry and airborne
  317. 13:43these
  318. 13:44elite units would naturally want to be
  319. 13:47right where the brothers are
  320. 13:48so a brother will come in there he has
  321. 13:50three years of college
  322. 13:52and right away bam he wants to get into
  323. 13:54that elite outfit because uh
  324. 13:56uh his other brothers are there you know
  325. 13:58and uh
  326. 14:00that's why you see the 173 everyone in
  327. 14:02vietnam which we used to support when i
  328. 14:04was on helicopter
  329. 14:05uh missions uh it's
  330. 14:08i i can really safely say to my
  331. 14:11accountant
  332. 14:12about 60 of that outfit is black
  333. 14:16and another reason why he's dying so
  334. 14:18much is because of his uh
  335. 14:20he you just want to he just he just want
  336. 14:23to show the man that he is a man
  337. 14:25and that he can do anything that the
  338. 14:28white guy does
  339. 14:29and you go all out all out to uh you
  340. 14:31know prove that
  341. 14:32well i don't want my black boys go over
  342. 14:34there fighting ain't getting when they
  343. 14:35come here
  344. 14:36that's how i feel about it when they
  345. 14:38come in they don't get no jobs and they
  346. 14:40get turned down they get killed
  347. 14:41and get their legs come up cut off and
  348. 14:43don't get nothing that's how i feel
  349. 14:45about it
  350. 14:45you're against the one in vietnam that's
  351. 14:47why i guess the world's victim i don't
  352. 14:49like it because there's no good
  353. 14:50our black boys going they're getting
  354. 14:51killed and they ain't doing nothing for
  355. 14:53us
  356. 14:54and when we get here to get a job we
  357. 14:55don't get none and then another thing
  358. 14:57you're getting
  359. 14:58housework you've got to have you you
  360. 15:00have to go to a whole lot
  361. 15:01the hell to get that you don't even get
  362. 15:03that for nothing there used to be a time
  363. 15:05you could get a job
  364. 15:06like that but you gotta you gotta show
  365. 15:08your whole history where you was born
  366. 15:09high it was born to get housewife
  367. 15:12that's right i
  368. 15:15left the service in 1966 and i
  369. 15:20had a skill as an
  370. 15:24in aircraft
  371. 15:28maintenance i walked both
  372. 15:32kennedy airport and
  373. 15:38guardia airport for 45 days trying to
  374. 15:42find a job out there
  375. 15:44i wound up with
  376. 15:48a 60 buck a week job
  377. 15:53where i packed little light bulbs and
  378. 15:57things like that my take-home pay was 49
  379. 16:01a week what do you think about that
  380. 16:05demonstration well if they go to vietnam
  381. 16:07they went on their own
  382. 16:09the bible said we know that lies god and
  383. 16:11we ain't gonna worry about it no more
  384. 16:13you're not gonna worry about what we
  385. 16:15ain't worrying about vietnam if you went
  386. 16:17over there you went on your own
  387. 16:18yeah we gave respect to the government
  388. 16:20100 while we know what the government is
  389. 16:22doing
  390. 16:23with the people out here see we are five
  391. 16:25percent of poor righteous teachers
  392. 16:27see we know everything see we respect
  393. 16:30the government
  394. 16:31at all costs while we'll back him up but
  395. 16:34we know he doing their job while we out
  396. 16:36here to do a job
  397. 16:37also right just while we're here what do
  398. 16:40you think about the jobs they're doing
  399. 16:41the government the government the
  400. 16:43government is doing everything right and
  401. 16:44exact that's the way it's supposed to be
  402. 16:46the government has always been right in

  463. 18:46year is independent here
  464. 18:48if they don't know the independent why
  465. 18:49they got to go out in the street and go
  466. 18:51by themselves
  467. 18:52ain't no one will help them
  468. 19:03[Applause]
  469. 19:05i'm not in favor of cleaning up another
  470. 19:07country when this is filthy that's bad
  471. 19:13don't worry about vietnam you can't you
  472. 19:15can't guarantee freedom for the people
  473. 19:17millions of miles away when you've got
  474. 19:19crap going on right here in the
  475. 19:20neighborhood
  476. 19:21in this city right about there america
  477. 19:23needs their own face cleaning
  478. 19:24first we were in this
  479. 19:27foxhole and the ceo's he was one of the
  480. 19:30most scared people i've ever seen doing
  481. 19:32any kind of an operation
  482. 19:34and we were being artilleried by the uh
  483. 19:36north vietnamese
  484. 19:38artillery batteries in the dmz the
  485. 19:40mountain areas
  486. 19:42and he was speaking to another
  487. 19:43lieutenant he was saying the coons are
  488. 19:45getting out of hand
  489. 19:47he looked over to the other corner of
  490. 19:49the bunker and he saw me and he quickly
  491. 19:51changed the statement from
  492. 19:53to color people are getting out of hand
  493. 19:57now right away it doesn't make me feel
  494. 20:00like i want to help him
  495. 20:02or i want to serve his cause and from
  496. 20:04before
  497. 20:05i didn't have any kind of a feeling for
  498. 20:07it to start with
  499. 20:08i i i was on
  500. 20:12my way home north
  501. 20:15and and i stopped in a food shop in
  502. 20:28and i had on on the whole
  503. 20:32green suit i walked in and
  504. 20:36they wouldn't serve me
  505. 20:40so right then
  506. 20:46with me
  507. 20:49the green suit and the flag didn't mean
  508. 20:52a goddamn thing
  509. 20:55and 19 days passed
  510. 20:59and i was in in the vietnam
  511. 21:04and for for the first four months there
  512. 21:07i fixed flat tires on jeeps
  513. 21:12uh lightweight trucks and uh caught and
  514. 21:15killed rats
  515. 21:19then i complained
  516. 21:23and got in the
  517. 21:31school to learn how to fix
  518. 21:36uh once which is a three-week course and
  519. 21:39i passed that
  520. 21:40and and from
  521. 21:45that time on i i fixed planks you see
  522. 21:48and then the
  523. 21:52middle of the tour i walked in into the
  524. 21:55out
  525. 21:56house and and saw the
  526. 21:59usual racial slur written on the wall
  527. 22:04so my my whole mind changed and i said
  528. 22:08how how how would that i'll do
  529. 22:11my time and get the hell out
  530. 22:18first time i realized that
  531. 22:21the man was definitely after me uh
  532. 22:24personally and us generally black
  533. 22:27brothers
  534. 22:28was when i was getting ready to go
  535. 22:31overseas and uh
  536. 22:33i was going overseas with this
  537. 22:34helicopter outfit
  538. 22:36combat assault helicopter as an air
  539. 22:39traffic
  540. 22:40control modified to be a ground combat
  541. 22:42controller
  542. 22:44and i was trained for this in an air
  543. 22:48force school in mississippi
  544. 22:51and i was the only brother to graduate
  545. 22:57so uh before i before i get into the
  546. 22:59story i was i must say that uh
  547. 23:01the graduation party that the at the
  548. 23:04class had
  549. 23:05i was the only one who couldn't attend
  550. 23:06because i was the only black guy in that
  551. 23:08class
  552. 23:09and they had their graduation party on a
  553. 23:11beach in mississippi
  554. 23:14and uh i couldn't even go on that beach
  555. 23:17and it struck me real hard thinking that
  556. 23:20uh
  557. 23:20after all i graduated with the guys and
  558. 23:23i could at least you know
  559. 23:25uh uh be part of this celebration
  560. 23:29anyway uh i finally went overseas
  561. 23:33and uh i figured uh well this will give
  562. 23:36me some experience to go
  563. 23:37when i come back i want to do this thing
  564. 23:39in civilian life
  565. 23:40air traffic control
  566. 23:41[Applause]
  567. 23:44but when i got over there the guy made
  568. 23:45me uh
  569. 23:47a driver for the other officers in the
  570. 23:51uh
  571. 23:51company and i said look i'm an air
  572. 23:54traffic controller and uh
  573. 23:56i'm supposed to be doing my job but
  574. 23:58that's what you sent me over here for
  575. 23:59spent eighteen thousand dollars of
  576. 24:01family to school
  577. 24:03and uh he said look i told him i said
  578. 24:06look because i'm i'm black or
  579. 24:08is it is it the reason that is it am i
  580. 24:10too uh
  581. 24:11black for a job like that is that uh is
  582. 24:13is it
  583. 24:15uh air traffic control is it a job too
  584. 24:17uh too good for a man like me to
  585. 24:20do and uh immediately sent me to the
  586. 24:23jungle the fulfillment of the first
  587. 24:25infantry division
  588. 24:26the fifth artillery group and then i
  589. 24:29stayed until i got out best of black
  590. 24:32youth are in the battlefields
  591. 24:34of vietnam see the
  592. 24:39the best of white youth are often the
  593. 24:42colleges they're not going to vietnam
  594. 24:45you know what you get of the white guys
  595. 24:47over there are the
  596. 24:49lowest level of you know the poor guy
  597. 24:52the poor little racist guy
  598. 24:53from some honky town down in mississippi
  599. 24:57you know who will never amount to
  600. 24:59anything anything you know all his life
  601. 25:01will just be based on hate and black
  602. 25:02folk
  603. 25:03you know because that's how he's trapped
  604. 25:04that's how he's oriented
  605. 25:06you know that's how you live unless it's
  606. 25:09something basic and fundamental that
  607. 25:11happens that's how he'll die
  608. 25:14you know but the best of the white youth
  609. 25:16are off here in the universities and
  610. 25:18frankly they're not going
  611. 25:20and their parents are committed they'll
  612. 25:22do everything you know and their
  613. 25:24and they'll go to jail before they go
  614. 25:26but the best of the black youth are over
  615. 25:28there fighting another colored people
  616. 25:30and so that the racist enemy in this
  617. 25:32country does two things
  618. 25:34okay he fights a racist war
  619. 25:37and then trails war of aggression
  620. 25:38against the vietnamese people
  621. 25:40with black youth
  622. 25:44who are carrying the major share of that
  623. 25:46battle certainly in terms of
  624. 25:47percentage of casualties and fatalities
  625. 25:50and he also deprives
  626. 25:52black folk here of the cream of the crop
  627. 25:55of black youth
  628. 25:56for wage war against racist americans
  629. 26:16[Applause]
  630. 26:23i think it's wonderful
  631. 26:26i think the war i think it's very unfair
  632. 26:28why should the
  633. 26:30people american boys white and black go
  634. 26:32to vietnam to fight
  635. 26:34when a quarter of the american
  636. 26:36population can't even vote
  637. 26:38not only they can't vote they can't even
  638. 26:39go to a toilet down south
  639. 26:41a public toilet i think it's a wonderful
  640. 26:43thing and i hope they continue to keep
  641. 26:45it very peaceful
  642. 26:47and uh well
  643. 26:50i'm trying to tell them the way i feel
  644. 26:52about it that you're right
  645. 26:55just keep it straight you're alright
  646. 27:10[Applause]
  647. 27:18the war what do you think these marches
  648. 27:20can do whether you can arouse interest
  649. 27:22and dramatize an issue very very very
  650. 27:25important what do you think about the
  651. 27:26black people marching
  652. 27:27i think they have a greater stake in it
  653. 27:29than white people
  654. 27:34or is it an anti-peace peace movement i
  655. 27:36think it's real peaceful
  656. 27:38do you feel any anti-white sentiment
  657. 27:39here no not at all
  658. 27:42i think if there is any it will be
  659. 27:43dissolved in the common cores that
  660. 27:45they're all fighting
  661. 27:48[Applause]
  662. 27:55i think it's lousy they're nothing but
  663. 27:57communists every one of them
  664. 28:00they don't deserve to live in this damn
  665. 28:01country what do you think about the law
  666. 28:03well i think about the war i think is
  667. 28:05right where fighting isn't real
  668. 28:09that's what we're doing we're fighting
  669. 28:11for our freedom idiots
  670. 28:17[Applause]
  671. 28:26that's all right
  672. 28:30don't make no difference to him get
  673. 28:32pieces don't make any difference
  674. 28:34everybody wants the water in you know
  675. 28:38it's all right what do you think about
  676. 28:40all that
  677. 28:42demonstration
  678. 28:55how do you feel about the war
  679. 29:00[Applause]
  680. 29:10in 64
  681. 29:13i received
  682. 29:17mail from home when i heard that the
  683. 29:20three civil rights workers got killed
  684. 29:22and
  685. 29:23and then they had rice in brooklyn and
  686. 29:29and i said what in the hell am i doing
  687. 29:32out here
  688. 29:33and uh my whole
  689. 29:37mind changed
  690. 29:43these skills here
  691. 29:46and help my own folks at home
  692. 29:51use these same girls to
  693. 29:57be free because as as
  694. 30:00as i've seen it just being in
  695. 30:04in a civil rights march
  696. 30:13at all
  697. 30:15[Applause]
  698. 30:17because there's racist cops dogs
  699. 30:23hate electric trick sticks that
  700. 30:26they shock you with hoes hoes
  701. 30:30hoses and i cannot see
  702. 30:35myself being in a nice
  703. 30:38piece full civil rights
  704. 30:42march
  705. 30:45sing songs
  706. 30:54[Applause]
  707. 31:02well i have one pretty sharp experiences
  708. 31:05about this uh
  709. 31:06elderly vietnamese woman i was in charge
  710. 31:08of giving out the sea rats
  711. 31:10one day and this elderly vietnamese
  712. 31:12woman
  713. 31:14came along with a crowd of children she
  714. 31:15kept begging me
  715. 31:17for one of the sea rats
  716. 31:20and i told her no no no no no no
  717. 31:23and i was laughing with her and the
  718. 31:25children and this woman
  719. 31:28kept begging me for one whole hour
  720. 31:31she kept begging me and finally i looked
  721. 31:34at her and i
  722. 31:35saw in this woman's face you know real
  723. 31:38sincere
  724. 31:39begging and then i thought to myself
  725. 31:42this woman could be my mother
  726. 31:45or she could be my grandmother and
  727. 31:48that child that she's holding in her
  728. 31:50hand could have been a relative of mine
  729. 31:52and there she is begging for
  730. 31:56food and i got so much on her side
  731. 32:00i started coming out of a pity bag and i
  732. 32:02just
  733. 32:03reached down in the box and gave her two
  734. 32:05whole boxes of sea rations
  735. 32:07and they would you know the other guy's
  736. 32:09food
  737. 32:11and they were pretty riled up because i
  738. 32:13had taken their food and given to her
  739. 32:15but i couldn't help it really because
  740. 32:17it was her land we'd come to would
  741. 32:19destroy
  742. 32:20and she needed food for the child but
  743. 32:23the best part of it was she went away
  744. 32:26and about two hours later when we were
  745. 32:28getting ready to leave she brought back
  746. 32:30the bag of roasted peanuts
  747. 32:33for me and she gave it to me and she
  748. 32:36wanted me to eat it
  749. 32:38and i gave it to her
  750. 32:41and it just showed that really if you
  751. 32:45want to help people
  752. 32:46then the best thing to do is to give
  753. 32:48them
  754. 32:49food clothes instead of going over and
  755. 32:52trying to tell them what to do
  756. 32:54and this really played a heavy part on
  757. 32:55me because it brought the vietnamese
  758. 32:57people
  759. 32:58through this lady closer to me or closer
  760. 33:01to understanding than their problem
  761. 33:05but the black the black gi's over there
  762. 33:08we had uh
  763. 33:10with the the majority of the vietnamese
  764. 33:13girls you know
  765. 33:14uh we had a much more uh
  766. 33:17report with them than the white guys
  767. 33:20because they would always say me and you
  768. 33:21same same you know me and you same same
  769. 33:23gi come here you know
  770. 33:24things like that and uh well they got
  771. 33:27uh they got a dislike
  772. 33:31for the uh white guys uh because the
  773. 33:34white guys went around saying that we
  774. 33:35were sushi and was back in the state
  775. 33:36that we were we had tails we used to
  776. 33:39have tails we were descendants of the
  777. 33:41monkeys in africa and uh
  778. 33:43things like that you know whenever
  779. 33:44you're having sex with them why don't
  780. 33:45you take them you know look
  781. 33:46you'll see they have uh big
  782. 33:49buttocks you know and uh that's because
  783. 33:51of their you know
  784. 33:53origins in africa uh you know and uh
  785. 33:57well the vietnamese then it saw
  786. 34:00what was happening back in the states
  787. 34:02was happening right there in their own
  788. 34:03country it was
  789. 34:04racism right there in front of their
  790. 34:05eyes you know and they'll call
  791. 34:07us soul brothers hateful brother here's
  792. 34:09our soul sister things like that and
  793. 34:11the uh and what a lot of color guys
  794. 34:15wouldn't call the vietnamese of [ __ ] or
  795. 34:16slope you know the white guys
  796. 34:18will mainly do that because it's a
  797. 34:20racial epithet you know like uh they'll
  798. 34:21call us
  799. 34:22[ __ ] here cool and everything we'll
  800. 34:24call them vietnamese or their
  801. 34:26slope anything but for me i never did
  802. 34:28call them that you know because i think
  803. 34:30i've been doing them the same injustice
  804. 34:31the white guy the white man over here
  805. 34:33was doing to me you know
  806. 34:34you know i just call him playing
  807. 34:35vietnamese by their name you know
  808. 34:38there was a survey made in the marine
  809. 34:39corps
  810. 34:41and they wanted to know what the marines
  811. 34:43felt about the vietnamese people
  812. 34:44how they felt about them and it
  813. 34:48surprised many of the
  814. 34:49officers that most of the men
  815. 34:52came back saying that they thought the
  816. 34:54vietnamese weren't human
  817. 34:57and because they don't think the
  818. 34:58vietnamese are human then they treat
  819. 35:00them less than human they think they're
  820. 35:01pigs
  821. 35:02dogs everything else
  822. 35:07tell me about you talking about how you
  823. 35:08uh but how you felt when you went over
  824. 35:11there
  825. 35:12what used to be feelings about the
  826. 35:15associated with this country
  827. 35:19are you felt like being american and all
  828. 35:21that happened that changed
  829. 35:27oh well i i
  830. 35:31was blinded by
  831. 35:34a life of being in white schools
  832. 35:38hearing white lies and
  833. 35:42i
  834. 35:46thought that since i'm being sent there
  835. 35:49okay i'll
  836. 35:50i'll i'll i'll
  837. 35:55spend my time in in there and
  838. 35:58get out but uh
  839. 36:03i use
  840. 36:07to like write
  841. 36:11i until i was stationed down south
  842. 36:15and i learned more of this
  843. 36:18hate in both down south and in
  844. 36:23vietnam too and
  845. 36:27because of that i am very suspicious of
  846. 36:31of 99 and and 99 100
  847. 36:36of all whites in the states and
  848. 36:41to me my uniform and my flag
  849. 36:44[Applause]
  850. 36:46don't mean a damn thing now
  851. 36:50if it wasn't finished you wouldn't have
  852. 36:53the right to assemble here today
  853. 37:21they should gather them all together and
  854. 37:23put it on a grave of a
  855. 37:24of a soldier in vietnamese
  856. 37:35wait a minute i my parents come from
  857. 37:38italy
  858. 37:39and i would fight against my country for
  859. 37:42this country
  860. 37:44no i'm back uh looking back on this
  861. 37:47patriotism thing or
  862. 37:48what is patriotism is it my country
  863. 37:50right or wrong whether my country is
  864. 37:52right or wrong
  865. 37:53i'll stick with it all right is it right
  866. 37:56or is it wrong
  867. 37:56is it right or wrong take a look at them
  868. 37:58do they look like they'd be able to get
  869. 38:00into service
  870. 38:03you're yeah what do you think about the
  871. 38:05world
  872. 38:06well i don't care i don't know anything
  873. 38:08about it but i know if my country's
  874. 38:09there uh i'm behind my country
  875. 38:11do you have service man yeah
  876. 38:21i was a sniper in the third marine
  877. 38:22division and uh
  878. 38:25it really hurt me a lot of times to see
  879. 38:2613 14 year old kids that we'd killed
  880. 38:29but then again i'm there coming down to
  881. 38:31kill us
  882. 38:33and the thing is we we didn't start the
  883. 38:34bombing until they started bringing
  884. 38:36supplies down from north vietnam
  885. 38:38to resupply their men and uh we've gotta
  886. 38:41we gotta
  887. 38:42we gotta stay there now until it's over
  888. 38:47uh it does definitely i think martin
  889. 38:49luther king is hurting around a lot
  890. 38:51by saying that the colored people are
  891. 38:53fighting a disproportionate war over
  892. 38:54there
  893. 38:55because i know a lot of the color boys
  894. 38:57that i work with they were proud
  895. 38:59to be there what do you think about the
  896. 39:00black people
  897. 39:01[Applause]
  898. 39:02i think martin luther king made a
  899. 39:04mistake the tie of civil rights
  900. 39:06with the um
  901. 39:09uh vietnam war what do you think of
  902. 39:11martin luther king marching
  903. 39:21he is a communist educated communist he
  904. 39:24used the colored paper
  905. 39:25for the propaganda for moscow nothing
  906. 39:27else
  907. 39:28what do you think about the relating of
  908. 39:30the civil rights movement
  909. 39:31and the uh peacemaker well i'd like to
  910. 39:34see everybody get along
  911. 39:36i'm like i'm for everybody
  912. 39:40uh it says america for whites nrp stands
  913. 39:44for national renaissance party
  914. 39:47well yes but i also believe that africa
  915. 39:49should be for the blacks
  916. 39:52i believe i believe that we should have
  917. 39:54a white empire i believe that the black
  918. 39:56should be part of the black empire and
  919. 39:57that the asiatic should be part of the
  920. 39:59yellow empire
  921. 40:00i i see i think it's against the laws of
  922. 40:02nature
  923. 40:03i don't think nature meant it meant that
  924. 40:05the races should have been mixed
  925. 40:06i don't think he did because if he did
  926. 40:08then we all
  927. 40:09about nature i think that we all would
  928. 40:11have been born in
  929. 40:12one race taking part in this
  930. 40:16demonstration
  931. 40:18well there are a lot of negroes in this
  932. 40:20country who
  933. 40:21they they don't have good jobs they're
  934. 40:24they're in bed they're in a bad economic
  935. 40:26situation they live in ghettos
  936. 40:28and they see they see the war in vietnam
  937. 40:31as as the war of
  938. 40:33of the uh the ghetto war where you take
  939. 40:36a lot of people
  940. 40:36out of together and you send them over
  941. 40:38there to vietnam which i do agree with
  942. 40:40them on that
  943. 40:40that a lot of a lot of poor kids are
  944. 40:42being sent over to vietnam because there
  945. 40:44aren't any jobs over them
  946. 40:45over here for them i agree with them on
  947. 40:47that but
  948. 40:48i think it would be better for them to
  949. 40:50so i am opposed to the world of vietnam
  950. 40:52but i am not opposed
  951. 40:54to the american gis over there i will
  952. 40:56support them 100 percent
  953. 40:59but i want i want the war to be won my
  954. 41:01book says bomb hanoi
  955. 41:03if i had a plane and if i had a bomb not
  956. 41:05a nuclear bomb
  957. 41:06but a big enough bump i would bomb hanoi
  958. 41:09i don't want to go to vietnam and shoot
  959. 41:10at a tree but there's some guy behind
  960. 41:12the tree who i can't see
  961. 41:13and i don't know what he's shooting at
  962. 41:14me with it's ridiculous
  963. 41:17and you say these people have a right to
  964. 41:19march what's that sign over here i said
  965. 41:21that they had a right to much but
  966. 41:22no but they don't have the right to wear
  967. 41:24a vehicle uniform it says
  968. 41:26kill red peace creeps
  969. 41:29and well we we want publicity and uh
  970. 41:34we're getting nothing and uh we really
  971. 41:36actually wouldn't kill any red peas
  972. 41:38groups of course the idea
  973. 41:39it isn't such a bad idea but we really
  974. 41:42wouldn't kill them i think we'd let them
  975. 41:44live
  976. 41:44because to me communism is just a
  977. 41:46disease of the mind it can't be cured
  978. 41:48we there are a lot of psychiatrists and
  979. 41:50psychologists in this country
  980. 41:52who can cure communism of course they
  981. 41:54look at
  982. 41:55they look at other things um like it's a
  983. 41:57disease like they'll say that fascism is
  984. 41:59a disease which i don't think it is
  985. 42:00i think communism is a disease and we
  986. 42:03don't have to kill them
  987. 42:04we can cure them but people who were
  988. 42:06born racial and furious well
  989. 42:08unfortunately well they should have
  990. 42:11their own sphere of influence
  991. 42:13the sphere of influence for the african
  992. 42:15is africa the sphere of influence for
  993. 42:16the asian is asia
  994. 42:18let them stay over there
  995. 42:21i'm pretty disgusted and
  996. 42:24i won't hide that i'm pretty angry angry
  997. 42:27about the whole mess
  998. 42:28not only black veterans but angry angry
  999. 42:31about the way black people have been
  1000. 42:32treated on a whole
1001. 42:34and everyone knows what's going on and
1002. 42:37still yet people there's some people who
1003. 42:39insist that nothing is going bad and
  1004. 42:40that things
1005. 42:41are going for the better and we know
  1006. 42:44that nothing's going for the better
1007. 42:46um i have been made even more angry by
1008. 42:50going to vietnam and having to
  1009. 42:52contribute
1010. 42:53and seeing black youth die in vietnam
1011. 42:57and still yet coming back and no one
1012. 42:59wants to listen to us no one wants to
1013. 43:01hear what we have to say
1014. 43:02and no one wants to do anything for us
  1015. 43:04we're still being treated as sub-humans
1016. 43:08i've came come back from vietnam and
1017. 43:09i've seen the things in my neighborhood
1018. 43:11i walk through the alleys and the alleys
1019. 43:13are piling high with garbage
1020. 43:15i see uh young children young black
1021. 43:17children running through the streets
1022. 43:19they don't have the proper clothes on
  1023. 43:20and it's not
1024. 43:21it's not the same old lie that they
1025. 43:23their parents don't want to work that is
  1026. 43:25not the case
1027. 43:26the case is they can't find jobs now the
1028. 43:29people complain about welfare they
  1029. 43:30complain about what
1030. 43:31is being paid to these people now well
  1031. 43:34we didn't
1032. 43:35think up the welfare scheme we didn't
1033. 43:38think up the welfare agency idea
1034. 43:41the man thought of the idea he is the
1035. 43:43one that put it into practice
1036. 43:45and he put it into practice to hide us
1037. 43:48he paid enormous sums of money
1038. 43:50for two rooms that the welfare agencies
  1039. 43:53would pay something like
1040. 43:54a hundred and fifty dollars and these
1041. 43:55weren't two good rooms i can take you
1042. 43:57and show them to you right now
1043. 43:59they were rent infested rooms to plaster
1044. 44:02holes in the wall broken the ceilings
  1045. 44:04corroding
1046. 44:05and they paid this money to the people
1047. 44:07to keep them off the streets to hide
  1048. 44:09them
1049. 44:10and then they built subways and they
1050. 44:11built the subways under us so they would
1051. 44:13never have to see us
1052. 44:15but they did something wrong when they
1053. 44:17built those skyscrapers because then we
1054. 44:19could see the skyscrapers and we saw
1055. 44:21what they were putting out and then we
  1056. 44:23started crawling out of
1057. 44:24our neighborhoods and taking looks at
  1058. 44:26what the man had
1059. 44:28and because we saw what the man had then
  1060. 44:30we became more angry
1061. 44:32and it's now because these people are
  1062. 44:34demanding that they get what's theirs
1063. 44:36now the man says do away with welfare he
  1064. 44:39says these people are lazy they're
  1065. 44:40always collecting welfare
1066. 44:42oh man it was your idea it wasn't our
  1067. 44:45idea
1068. 44:45so crawl off our backs these people
1069. 44:49didn't want to hide to start what they
1070. 44:51asked you for jobs in the beginning
1071. 44:53you didn't want to give them the jobs
1072. 44:54you didn't want to give them the better
1073. 44:55education you didn't want to give them
  1074. 44:57the better housing
1075. 44:58instead you chose to give them charity
  1076. 45:01and now you're complaining because you
1077. 45:04have to pay out more charity than you
  1078. 45:06want to pay out
  1079. 45:07i mean don't complain to us
1080. 45:10if you wanted to do free giving in the
  1081. 45:12beginning
1082. 45:14continue to give free giving just
  1083. 45:16because you started out giving a man a
1084. 45:17dollar and he's asking you for two
1085. 45:19dollars now don't start crying on our
  1086. 45:20shoulders
  1087. 45:22it's not our problem
  1088. 45:27well uh i think uh it's a really
  1089. 45:30pathetic situation uh
1090. 45:32i think this summer and uh i was
  1091. 45:35succeeding someone's gonna really
  1092. 45:37um see a change in the black man's
1093. 45:39attitude to what the white man
1094. 45:41what the white man is putting out to him
  1095. 45:44so
  1096. 45:45all i can say is uh it's going to be a
  1097. 45:48pathetic thing
1098. 45:50if you really really read the riot
  1099. 45:52report and
1100. 45:53see what it has in those pages
1101. 45:58you would you may not sleep nights just
  1102. 46:01thinking what's going to happen
1103. 46:04unless a man does something to alleviate
  1104. 46:07these conditions
1105. 46:08these worse than conditions not here in
1106. 46:11new york in chicago and in the south and
1107. 46:14mississippi all over the place it's uh
1108. 46:16it's right here the war is going to
  1109. 46:19escalate right here
1110. 46:21as he escalates the war in vietnam it's
1111. 46:22going to escalate right here
1112. 46:24the price of an f4 phantom jet
1113. 46:27is two and a half million bucks each
  1114. 46:31with that uncle sam
1115. 46:35can build two beautiful schools
  1116. 46:40here
  1117. 46:42for that same amount
1118. 46:46but instead it's being used to buy
  1119. 46:51a high performance multi-engine
1120. 46:54jet that is being shot down and
  1121. 46:59will wind up being a useless
  1122. 47:03scrap a useless heap of scrap
1123. 47:10you know i think one of the worst
1124. 47:11mistakes that the man has ever made is
1125. 47:13to think that we would be
1126. 47:14full enough to be trained in
1127. 47:17warfare and still yet come back home
1128. 47:20watch our people live in misery die in
  1129. 47:23misery
1130. 47:24and still be stupid enough not to want
  1131. 47:27to help our people
1132. 47:28now for people on the street the people
  1133. 47:31in the so-called riots i call them
  1134. 47:32revolts
1135. 47:33the people in the revolts are to be shot
  1136. 47:36down and killed
  1137. 47:38then i don't think there's any brother
1138. 47:40who's going to stand around knowing what
  1139. 47:42he can do
1140. 47:43and knowing what he's capable of putting
1141. 47:45out he's going to stand around and watch
1142. 47:48his own people get shot down
1143. 47:50if a man on the street dies i die
1144. 47:53if the this country ever decides to
  1145. 47:55exterminate
  1146. 47:56black people i'm sure they're not going
1147. 47:58to exclude me because i've been in
  1148. 48:00vietnam
1149. 48:01they're going to exterminate all black
  1150. 48:04people and that includes
  1151. 48:05all vietnam veterans uh
1152. 48:08four little girls died in a sunday
  1153. 48:11school
1154. 48:13the man who laid the charge was a white
1155. 48:16national guardsman yet the white people
1156. 48:19in this damn united states have the
  1157. 48:21nerve
  1158. 48:21to get shooken up when i
1159. 48:25say i will use my skills to fight
  1160. 48:29for a revolt against 400 years of
  1161. 48:34racism that's a bunch of bull
1162. 48:37because i i will be out in in the damn
  1163. 48:40streets
  1164. 48:41and and i won't be wearing
1165. 48:45a fatigue uniform and boots
1166. 48:50of of some damn armed force
1167. 48:54i got i got a solution to this whole
  1168. 48:55problem i think it's the united
  1169. 49:01just states out you know there's a big
1170. 49:03mistake let the people govern themselves
1171. 49:05you know i have elections and everything
1172. 49:06okay the nlf take over okay that's all
  1173. 49:08right that's their country was their
1174. 49:10country in the first place
1175. 49:11and come back here and reorganize
1176. 49:13revitalize the whole all the programs
  1177. 49:15that you have started
  1178. 49:16revitalize everything you know just a
  1179. 49:17regeneration of everything
1180. 49:19uh slums at inadequate house and
  1181. 49:22everything just
1182. 49:23just get together and plan you know just
  1183. 49:26okay this is a great society that's what
  1184. 49:28johnson said okay i'll really make it a
  1185. 49:30great society
1186. 49:31building better schools better housing
1187. 49:33you train the black people and
1188. 49:35the skills that that that the black
1189. 49:37people are supposed to be training
1190. 49:39and uh and just start a new society and
  1191. 49:44then this would
1192. 49:44be really democracy you know it's uh but
1193. 49:47they're not going to do it
1194. 49:49if if the united states government were
1195. 49:51able to pull out of vietnam
1196. 49:53and you ask them what happened to the 80
1197. 49:55billion dollars they spent in vietnam
1198. 49:58why can't they put it in the in our
  1199. 50:01black communities
1200. 50:02they're gonna say they don't have the
1201. 50:04money but where did all the money
  1202. 50:06disappear to
1203. 50:08what are you fighting for why don't you
1204. 50:09just let people live just let us
1205. 50:12work just let us make a living each in
  1206. 50:14their own category
1207. 50:16each working the best of their ability i
1208. 50:18don't want to live on park avenue i
1209. 50:20can't afford it but if my black brother
1210. 50:22can and can't afford it let him live
  1211. 50:24my son mate can't go to harvard i can't
1212. 50:26afford it but if his black brother can't
  1213. 50:28let him go
1214. 50:29i mean i don't know what we are fighting
  1215. 50:32about i'll tell you
  1216. 50:33one reason why they're fighting one
  1217. 50:35reason why they're fighting
1218. 50:37it's not the idea of he has
1219. 50:40more than the other fella what they're
  1220. 50:43fighting for
1221. 50:44and how you say kind of equal right
1222. 50:47yeah equal rights in america
1223. 51:06apartment the white guy want to move in
1224. 51:10the apartment who gets the first
  1225. 51:11preference
  1226. 51:11but that's what i'm talking about well
  1227. 51:13you don't want to know
1228. 51:15if i had if i had first choice from the
  1229. 51:18beginning
1230. 51:19if i had first choice from the beginning
  1231. 51:21why shouldn't i get in there first
  1232. 51:23because you're black ah that's what i'm
  1233. 51:26trying to say
1234. 51:27that's not the end of the day
  1235. 51:30vietnam now you're president of the
  1236. 51:33united states
  1237. 51:34because i am a democrat
  1238. 51:48getting the same results that they're
  1239. 51:50getting now
1240. 51:52no what do you think of the fact that
1241. 51:54more black men are dying over there than
1242. 51:55white men how does that make you feel
  1243. 51:57well
  1244. 51:57i don't know i really don't know
1245. 52:00whether the black man is dying more so
  1246. 52:03than the white man
1247. 52:05but i do know this much i know that
1248. 52:08my boy is over there
1249. 52:11he's supposed to be fighting for his
1250. 52:13rights here in the united states
1251. 52:15but he's not getting them he is not
  1252. 52:18getting them
1253. 52:19i want it i want it for him
  1254. 52:23and if i don't think he's not getting
  1255. 52:24them you believe me i'll do
  1256. 52:26every book anything i watch today
1257. 52:29i don't know i have to see about that
  1258. 52:33because i am an authority well then i
  1259. 52:35don't know what's right normally
1260. 52:36i think the black people's fighting for
  1261. 52:39wars ever since i can remember
1262. 52:41and even before your time of mine the
1263. 52:43black man has been sent all over the
1264. 52:45world fighting for his rights
1265. 52:46and your day there's oneness in his wife
1266. 52:49down there forming some kind of
1267. 52:51thing to keep the black child out of
  1268. 52:53school in
1269. 52:54america let us clean up him my darling
1270. 52:58we would live what we preach in the
  1271. 53:00world we wouldn't have the fight
1272. 53:03we are fighting for nothing because the
  1273. 53:05white man say you
1274. 53:06fight the white man holds your light and
1275. 53:09the palm in his hand
1276. 53:11you're afraid to open your mouth
1277. 53:16he can put you out of your apartment he
  1278. 53:18can take your
1279. 53:19job so you walk along with me come on
1280. 53:21and say what do you think about so and
  1281. 53:23so so oh i got that to say i haven't
  1282. 53:25seen himself i don't introduce me what
  1283. 53:26can you do
1284. 53:27but you pay your taxes when i get my
  1285. 53:29little envelope
1286. 53:30the bad got my money he don't ask me for
  1287. 53:33it
1288. 53:34i'm a citizen then but if i open my
  1289. 53:37mouth about anything
  1290. 53:38else i'm a communist i'm a raverizer i'm
  1291. 53:41stirring up things
1292. 53:42but the same thing that i'm speaking for
  1293. 53:44for myself
  1294. 53:45the white man doesn't and they're doing
1295. 53:47it all of his life
1296. 53:48what do you think of the black man
1297. 53:50defending himself with guns and over in
1298. 53:51vietnam and yet why do you keep
1299. 54:02when they push him like that what the
1300. 54:05hell are you if somebody keep on coming
1301. 54:07up to you with a damn gun
1302. 54:08what are you going to do yeah sit back
1303. 54:10they teach him to fight and kill over
  1304. 54:12there
1305. 54:19well he's supposed to defend this damn
  1306. 54:21song listen
1307. 54:23you said to me a black man that sent
  1308. 54:25over to vietnam with a gun
  1309. 54:27what should he do isn't a white man
  1310. 54:29sitting over there right
1311. 54:30well what the hell if he should defend
1312. 54:32himself at home here too with the gun
1313. 54:34that's your damn life if they keep on
  1314. 54:36[ __ ] them
  1315. 54:38if they keep on [ __ ] them yet shoot
1316. 54:42the hell out of them
  1317. 54:49if they pull then
1318. 54:53most people say if you don't like it
  1319. 54:55here get out
  1320. 54:56that's that's for spineless people
  1321. 54:59spineless bastards who
1322. 55:01don't want to fight for what they
  1323. 55:03believe in
  1324. 55:06well i'm staying here because i was born
  1325. 55:09here
1326. 55:10and i am going to fight for my freedom
  1327. 55:14and before i have kids
1328. 55:17i am going to make sure that this damn
  1329. 55:20united states deserves
1330. 55:23the existence of my kids because
1331. 55:26i will not rest until this
1332. 55:29until every sunday school is safe
1333. 55:33for my kids so that
1334. 55:39they won't get killed or beaten up
1335. 55:43like those kids down in mississippi
  1336. 55:48in 1966 that
1337. 55:51is going to stop or else i'll be dead
1338. 55:56i they're one you white folks have
1339. 56:01have either one of two choices
1340. 56:05give me my damn freedom or kill me
1341. 56:09because i am tired of sitting by
1342. 56:13being an uncle tom or a house
  1343. 56:17naked grow like
  1344. 56:20booth and wilkins
1345. 56:24those two guys are not negroes
1346. 56:31they're white people with man tan
  1347. 56:34that's all they don't speak
  1348. 56:38for us they have
1349. 56:42have found their way in in into the
  1350. 56:45white man's
  1351. 56:47house the white man's establishment
1352. 56:50and they are not about
  1353. 56:54to make waves but i i i
1354. 56:58am because i am not going to take
1355. 57:02seeing my kids walking to a newly
1356. 57:05integrated school and getting their
  1357. 57:06heads
1358. 57:09whipped in my grown men because of that
  1359. 57:11happens to my kids
1360. 57:12there are going to be a lot of damn dead
  1361. 57:15white folks
  1362. 57:16and and and and i mean a lot
1363. 57:19because i am not going to take this john
  1364. 57:21no no more
1365. 57:25the the days of step and fetch it are
  1366. 57:28dead
1367. 57:31the days of the plaque face big
  1368. 57:34wide-eyed
  1369. 57:35gin drinking black men
1370. 57:39are dead now we have
1371. 57:43what is called black consciousness
  1372. 58:00[Applause]
  1373. 58:06oh
  1374. 58:12[Applause]
  1375. 58:19oh will i be on television
  1376. 58:26well i think the parade is wonderful i
1377. 58:28think you bring all the boys back home
  1378. 58:30because
  1379. 58:31it's a very unconstitutional thing yeah
  1380. 58:41it isn't fair for our youngsters
1381. 58:44to be in vietnam fighting somebody
1382. 58:46else's wall you got negroes fighting
  1383. 58:48people they don't even know
  1384. 58:50and another thing
1385. 58:54but over in vietnam we're the majority
  1386. 58:56and i don't think this is right
  1387. 58:58that's why i think this demonstration i
  1388. 58:59think is um
1389. 59:01some good gonna come out of it i think a
1390. 59:03lot of good gonna come out of it myself
1391. 59:27don't have no right being over there
1392. 59:28anyway the americans are the black
  1393. 59:30people
1394. 59:31the americans are the black people
1395. 59:32they're all this is not our i think
  1396. 59:34those people just settle
1397. 59:35differences when you think about the
1398. 59:38merger of the civil rights struggle with
  1399. 59:40the peace movement
1400. 59:41in favor of the nation the leaders
1401. 59:42should be the same they should everybody
1402. 59:44should work for both causes
1403. 59:46i think so all right i mean what's going
  1404. 59:49to happen
1405. 59:52this next presidential next presidential
  1406. 59:54election
1407. 59:56johnson is going to stop this war and
1408. 59:58use it to bring the boys back home
1409. 1:00:00for for voters and soldiers and
  1410. 1:00:02political rights
1411. 1:00:03it's a political war man the vietnamese
  1412. 1:00:06the vietnamese
  1413. 1:00:06people are being slaughtered
1414. 1:00:11told america to get out of there and
1415. 1:00:13lead those people along they had the
  1416. 1:00:15fresh legends fighting
1417. 1:00:16and they didn't beat them and they are
  1418. 1:00:18not going to beat
1419. 1:00:27time two them boys get killed eight boys
  1420. 1:00:29get killed
  1421. 1:00:31[Applause]
1422. 1:00:34what do you think we can do well uh if
  1423. 1:00:36there's enough
  1424. 1:00:38pressure public pressure used
1425. 1:00:41johnson can be shamed enough to bring
  1426. 1:00:43these kids back home
1427. 1:00:45you're wrong for being over there first
1428. 1:00:47of all you have no right feeling
  1429. 1:00:49and he's asking for this don't surrender
1430. 1:00:52man you gotta clean up your own backyard
  1431. 1:00:54man before you can
  1432. 1:00:55clean up somebody else's backyard the
1433. 1:00:57wall should be in mississippi and
  1434. 1:00:59alabama and georgia
1435. 1:01:02and uh clean up their own backyards
  1436. 1:01:05right
1437. 1:01:05in harlem the rats infested areas around
  1438. 1:01:09here
  1439. 1:01:10whiskey stores a church in a pool room
1440. 1:01:12that's all we got around here in holland
1441. 1:01:14this is where the war should be fought
  1442. 1:01:17right here
1443. 1:01:18how do you think when you think we're
1444. 1:01:20not fighting it fighting in alabama
1445. 1:01:23you can't win down there because the
  1446. 1:01:24united states government don't support
  1447. 1:01:26you the attorney general
1448. 1:01:27you still let them gangsters uh use that
1449. 1:01:30hitlerism down there not aggressive
  1450. 1:01:32enough
1451. 1:01:33it's coming this mississippi and georgia
  1452. 1:01:35that's what it is
1453. 1:01:43you know this this this revolution is
1454. 1:01:45filled with so many ironies really
1455. 1:01:48uh first you tell us that it is manly to
  1456. 1:01:50keep your word
1457. 1:01:52all right if you are a man you keep your
  1458. 1:01:54word
1459. 1:01:55and now all the black people in this
1460. 1:01:58country are demanding and even the black
1461. 1:02:00people in the whole world are demanding
1462. 1:02:02is that you keep your word you told us
  1463. 1:02:05we were free
1464. 1:02:06well then show us that we're free
1465. 1:02:09you told us that there is just this
1466. 1:02:11equality for all in this country women
  1467. 1:02:13can
1468. 1:02:14stick to your word and let us see the
  1469. 1:02:16justice inequality for all
1470. 1:02:19or else admit to us that you're not a
  1471. 1:02:21man you're a worm you're afraid of us
1472. 1:02:23you're afraid to give us
1473. 1:02:24equal stead you're afraid that if you
1474. 1:02:26give us equal ground that we will match
1475. 1:02:29you and we will override you
  1476. 1:02:31and if that's what you're afraid of us
1477. 1:02:33then then tell us that just what you're
  1478. 1:02:35afraid of
1479. 1:02:36but don't keep hiding it from us and
1480. 1:02:38holding this up to us and every time we
  1481. 1:02:40ask you for something
1482. 1:02:41you give us a little bit of something
  1483. 1:02:43and it's all tokenism we don't want
  1484. 1:02:45tokenism
1485. 1:02:46and they're most black men in this world
  1486. 1:02:48that don't want charity
1487. 1:02:50and yet still every time we ask you for
  1488. 1:02:52something you give us a little piece a
  1489. 1:02:53little piece you're playing games with
  1490. 1:02:55us
  1491. 1:02:55we're not children we're big men i've
1492. 1:02:59seen my father have to put up with all
  1493. 1:03:01kinds of stuff
1494. 1:03:02he was a big man he raised a family he
  1495. 1:03:05went down south
1496. 1:03:06and he had to go around to the back door
  1497. 1:03:08with his wife
1498. 1:03:10we're not asking for anything we're not
1499. 1:03:12asking for any favors all we want is
  1500. 1:03:14what's ours
1501. 1:03:17now there are many black veterans who
  1502. 1:03:19are coming back and they're mad they're
  1503. 1:03:21angry
1504. 1:03:22do you think that they're going to sit
  1505. 1:03:24down through this our fathers didn't
1506. 1:03:25have the knowledge that we had
1507. 1:03:28they sat through it but there are other
1508. 1:03:31black youth that are not going to sit
1509. 1:03:33through it we know about chair we know
  1510. 1:03:35about uh
1511. 1:03:35fannin we've read the books of our
  1512. 1:03:38revolution we've listened to mountainous
1513. 1:03:41quotations we know where we stand
1514. 1:03:44we're not gonna sit for it we're asking
1515. 1:03:47and if we ask and we don't get we're
1516. 1:03:49prepared to stand up and take it
  1517. 1:03:52if i ask a man i tell a man i am hungry
1518. 1:03:56i tell him i am cold and i ask him to do
  1519. 1:04:00something about my condition
1520. 1:04:02and this man holds a loaf of bread right
1521. 1:04:04in front of me so i can see it and i
  1522. 1:04:06keep asking him i'm begging him
1523. 1:04:08to please give me a slice of the loaf of
  1524. 1:04:10bread i am hungry
1525. 1:04:13then it is known by every psychologist
1526. 1:04:15that the next step in the progression is
1527. 1:04:17i am going to knock him upside the head
1528. 1:04:19and take the bread from him
1529. 1:04:21i'm not going to starve to death
1530. 1:04:24all we're asking no one wants to see
1531. 1:04:27blood no one likes the smell of blood no
1532. 1:04:29one wants war anyone who's been in war
  1533. 1:04:32doesn't want
1534. 1:04:33war everyone knows what it is to see the
  1535. 1:04:36inside of a man's gut hanging out and
1536. 1:04:38see your friends die see relatives die
  1537. 1:04:41no one wants to
1538. 1:04:42regress back to the state of mind where
  1539. 1:04:44you have to think
