OBSESSION Movie Breakdown: Every Hidden Detail You Missed! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to New Rockstars. I'm Eric
- 0:02Boss, and this is a breakdown of
- 0:03Obsession, the new horror film by
- 0:05director Curry Barker. Yes, one of two
- 0:07YouTubers currently revolutionizing
- 0:09Hollywood. Barker made this wonderfully
- 0:11haunting film about toxic love that's
- 0:13layered and deeper meaning and
- 0:14incredible attention to detail in the
- 0:16visuals. So, in this video, I'm going to
- 0:18go through this film scene by scene for
- 0:20all the little details that you might
- 0:21have missed. Now, if you are new to this
- 0:23New Rockstars channel, we might be
- 0:24better known for covering big nerdy
- 0:26franchises like Marvel, DC, and Star
- 0:28Wars, but we also try to analyze films
- 0:29like this that you might be even more
- 0:31passionate about. So, I highly recommend
- 0:32you check out our breakdowns of
- 0:34Backrooms, Project Hail Mary, One Battle
- 0:36After Another, Weapons and Sinners.
- 0:38Obsession begins with this monologue by
- 0:40Bear, short for Baron Bailey, played by
- 0:42Michael Johnston. He's in a diner
- 0:44rehearsing his love confession that he
- 0:46wants to share with his friend and
- 0:47coworker Nikki, testing it on this very
- 0:49polite waitress. There has been much
- 0:51discourse about how Obsession is a story
- 0:53about toxic male loneliness or even
- 0:55perhaps part of an incel horror trend
- 0:57akin to The Menu and Don't Worry
- 0:59Darling. But, director Curry Barker said
- 1:01that he started with an idea of what
- 1:02happens when two people are obsessed
- 1:04with each other and what horrifying,
- 1:05destructive, and self-destructive
- 1:07lengths they would go to in order to
- 1:08feed that hunger. Bear's affection for
- 1:10Nikki, though, is one-sided, an
- 1:12obsession seen from afar and not an
- 1:14organic affection born out of mutual
- 1:16chemistry. So, you'll notice this film
- 1:17opens with sappy romantic dialogue,
- 1:19romantic music, warm vibes and lighting,
- 1:22and even this pleasant setting to make
- 1:24us think we're watching some kind of
- 1:25mumblecore romance, starting us off with
- 1:27a false sense of sap and security. When
- 1:29in reality, the behavior we are
- 1:31witnessing is actually pretty
- 1:32troublesome. Like, what he literally
- 1:33says is, "I feel like I'm coming apart.
- 1:36I think about you all the time, Nikki. I
- 1:37try not to. You're in every song I
- 1:39listen to." I mean, yikes. Curry Barker
- 1:42told Collider's Perry Nemiroff that this
- 1:44whole diner scene was actually a reshot
- 1:46opening. The film's original opening
- 1:47shot was going to mirror the closing
- 1:49shot.
- 1:50>> The opening shot of this movie was um
- 1:53was on Bear
- 1:55and then we tilt the camera down and we
- 1:57see the dead cat and then we keep
- 1:59tilting and we see that he's watching a
- 2:01a romance movie on the TV. So that was
- 2:04the opening shot which obviously mirrors
- 2:06the very very last shot of the movie. So
- 2:09I It took me a long time to give that
- 2:11up. I was like, "No, like this is the
- 2:13This is the you know, it's it's a a
- 2:15bookend, you know, it's first shot of
- 2:17the movie, last shot of the movie." But
- 2:18ultimately um
- 2:20we discovered that having him kind of
- 2:23giving that monologue at the beginning
- 2:25at the diner and kind of getting a
- 2:26little note about his character was
- 2:28better.
- 2:28>> Bear says, "I would choose you over
- 2:30everything." And when the waitress kind
- 2:32of melts at that, Ian cuts it off and
- 2:33calls it cringe. It's the one kind of
- 2:35romantic thing that Bear said and Ian
- 2:37wants to make him feel bad about it so
- 2:39that he doesn't actually use it on
- 2:41Nikki, whom Ian is secretly sleeping
- 2:42with. Ian is also the one to bring up
- 2:44the idea of being playfully mean to
- 2:46flirt with Nikki, to call her freaky
- 2:47Nikki, the teasing nickname that Nikki
- 2:49hates because Ian actually knows it
- 2:51would sabotage Bear to ever say that.
- 2:53That's why he also pushes so hard for
- 2:55Bear to wait until the right time to
- 2:56tell his feelings to Nikki, knowing that
- 2:58the right time will probably never come.
- 3:00Bear comes home to find his poor cat
- 3:02Sandy has died from ingesting a bottle
- 3:04of Oxy that he wrote do not eat on the
- 3:06bottom of, a bottle that was prescribed
- 3:08to his deceased grandmother Barbara, and
- 3:10a bottle that will come back at the end
- 3:11of the movie. In his bedroom, photo
- 3:12booth photos of this trivia team, the
- 3:14Base Clef Bandits since they all work at
- 3:16the music store, shows a blurry one with
- 3:18Bear looking like he's dragging Nikki in
- 3:20with him, and then another one of Bear
- 3:21smiling while Nikki just kind of frowns
- 3:23and flips the finger, and then another
- 3:24one with Bear frowning as Nikki is
- 3:26dragged in Ian and she's smiling again.
- 3:28Bear totally fails to see that Nikki
- 3:30does not see him the way he sees her,
- 3:32and she really just wants to have fun
- 3:33with her friends and with Ian. Bear
- 3:35ogles Nikki's Instagram where she
- 3:36self-deprecates that her selfie looks
- 3:38like it was shot on a flip phone, and of
- 3:39course he liked the post, but it's also
- 3:41liked by Cooper Tomlinson, the actor who
- 3:43plays Ian. Nikki's full name is Nikki
- 3:45Freeman, an ironic nod to the fact that
- 3:47she spends most of this movie not at all
- 3:49free, but rather trapped in a kind of
- 3:51purgatory state. To replace the crystal
- 3:53necklace that Nikki dropped down the
- 3:54drain, Bear goes to an occult shop where
- 3:56he finds the One Wish Willow. Curry
- 3:58Barker said that he was inspired by The
- 3:59Simpsons season 3 Treehouse of Horror
- 4:01episode. Remember with the Monkey's Paw,
- 4:03based on the W.W. Jacobs short story
- 4:05about a severed monkey's paw that grants
- 4:06wishes with unintended consequences.
- 4:08Barker said that the One Wish Willow was
- 4:10inspired by a prank pin that he used to
- 4:11play with as a kid. And production
- 4:12designer Vivian Gray and prop master
- 4:14Luke Cole tracked down one of those pins
- 4:16and incorporated a piece of its snapping
- 4:17mechanism into the willow twig. For the
- 4:19twig, Cole used dried cactus skeletons.
- 4:21But the wood of a willow tree is said to
- 4:23be associated with enchantment or just
- 4:25the occult, but really its meaning
- 4:26changes culture to culture. But the
- 4:28snapping of a twig is also a gesture
- 4:29associated with witchcraft as we saw in
- 4:31the 2025 film Weapons. Now, the trivia
- 4:34night is hosted at Barker's pub, but not
- 4:36to writer-director Curry Barker. And the
- 4:38voice of the trivia host is Curry's
- 4:39father, Jeff Barker, a successful
- 4:41playwright who helped him write this
- 4:42movie. At the bar, as Nikki teases Bear
- 4:44about his pina colada order and she pays
- 4:46for all the drinks, it's much easier for
- 4:48us to see it's on rewatch that it's
- 4:49really not at all flirting by Nikki.
- 4:51It's the kind of teasing a sister would
- 4:53do to a brother. But also notice that
- 4:55she calls everyone, including the
- 4:56bartender, babe. So, you can really see
- 4:58how Bear might have just completely
- 4:59misread that in the past as an
- 5:01affectionate term that was just
- 5:02exclusively for him. Ian interrupts Bear
- 5:04as he tries to tell Nikki his feelings.
- 5:06Yeah, Ian is really the world's worst
- 5:07wingman because yeah, he has something
- 5:09to lose here. When Bear says that they
- 5:10should drink to Sandy, only Sarah senses
- 5:13Bear's sadness and comforts him about
- 5:15his dead cat. In fact, I wonder if it
- 5:16might have actually been Sarah who was
- 5:18the only one of these friends to comfort
- 5:20Bear about his dead grandmother, not
- 5:21Nikki. But Bear's fixation and obsession
- 5:23on Nikki caused him to reassign that
- 5:25memory to Nikki. Even in the parking lot
- 5:27outside, you can see everyone's true
- 5:29affections when you rewatch it. Nikki
- 5:30does flirtatiously tease Ian here, but
- 5:32then she stares a little too long at
- 5:34Bear when he just laughs too hard at her
- 5:35flirt and it puts Bear in the headspace
- 5:37of, wait, how does she feel about me?
- 5:40That kind of uncertainty is something
- 5:41that Curry Barker tried to place this
- 5:43whole movie in because that kind of
- 5:44uncertainty of how other people see you
- 5:46is what puts you in that state of
- 5:48anxiety. Meanwhile, Bear doesn't even
- 5:49notice when Sarah's freaking begging him
- 5:52to come along with them. And when Sarah
- 5:53hugs him good night, notice her hand
- 5:55lingers on his arm and she gives him a
- 5:56little pick-me smile. But the
- 5:58cinematography is so obsessed with Nikki
- 6:00that's hard for us to even notice it
- 6:01first. Ian says, "Get your girl home
- 6:03safe." And Nikki says, "Ew, don't say it
- 6:04like that." Like Ian would be talking
- 6:06about her brother. In fact, later in the
- 6:07car, she'll say "Ew" again later. But
- 6:09Bear doesn't pick up on any of those
- 6:11signals. Nikki tells Bear that she's
- 6:13quitting the job because she needs a
- 6:14life change love into her writing and
- 6:16Bear assumes her story that she's
- 6:17writing is a romance and she responds,
- 6:19"It's not a romance, it's a love story."
- 6:21Bear assumes that those are the same
- 6:22thing, but this false assumption is
- 6:24really the theme of the whole film. What
- 6:25we consider love is not always a
- 6:27positive romantic force. Love also has a
- 6:30dark toxic flip side that's really
- 6:32obsession, obsession that is ultimately
- 6:34destructive. Bear just keeps fumbling
- 6:36and he tries to say good night to Nikki
- 6:37by saying, "Night, freaking Nikki."
- 6:40Yeah, trying Ian's move and it
- 6:41immediately backfires as Nikki is truly
- 6:43offended. He can't bring himself to tell
- 6:45her his real feelings even when she
- 6:46gives an opportunity to do so. And with
- 6:48his plans completely foiled, he pulls
- 6:50out the one wish willow which emits a
- 6:51little chime and he says, "I wish Nikki
- 6:54Freeman loved me more than anyone in the
- 6:55[ __ ] world." and snaps the willow
- 6:57branch. Now, the exact wording really
- 6:59mattered here. More than anyone in the
- 7:01[ __ ] world applied a level of
- 7:03intensity to this love that makes it way
- 7:05more than what it might have been, just
- 7:07sweet affection that never ever ended.
- 7:09Now, when Bear looks over at Nikki, even
- 7:10though we had heard the door close, we
- 7:12didn't hear it open again and she's just
- 7:14suddenly on the porch silhouetted dark
- 7:16in the light. She's basically a menacing
- 7:17spectral presence that he jumps at, kind
- 7:19of like the way shadowy demons often
- 7:21appear in horror films. Though, Curry
- 7:22Barker, an actress Indiana Varet, went
- 7:25to great lengths to make Nikki not come
- 7:27off as demonically possessed as this is
- 7:29not a possession story, but rather she
- 7:31comes off as more of a whiny,
- 7:33possessive, jealous girlfriend. And
- 7:35right away, Nikki seems off. There is no
- 7:37glimpse of any of her former self here.
- 7:39She seems over obsessed with Bear's cat
- 7:41and she thinks it was her cat for a
- 7:43second, and then she just starts
- 7:44glitching saying, "I'm sorry. Yeah, I'm
- 7:47sorry. Yeah." Yeah, Novaret is just so
- 7:50nuanced and controlled here. It is
- 7:51terrifying. Now, I'm going to refer to
- 7:53this new presence as wish corrupted
- 7:55Nikki. It's not a demon, it's a new
- 7:57presence created by the wish that has
- 7:58taken over Nikki's full body and mind,
- 8:00singularly focused on an obsession on
- 8:02Bear, forcing real Nikki into the
- 8:04backseat in a kind of purgatory state
- 8:06where she can see, feel, and experience
- 8:08everything that's happening to her, but
- 8:10do nothing to stop it. But, real Nikki
- 8:11briefly surfaces again here saying,
- 8:13"What the fuck?" But then, wish
- 8:15corrupted Nikki regains control and then
- 8:16starts pouting teasingly as she lies
- 8:18about her dad dying to manipulate Bear
- 8:20into spending the night with her. Wish
- 8:22corrupted Nikki gets Bear to sleep in
- 8:23bed with her, and as she makes out with
- 8:24him, real Nikki resurfaces again. But,
- 8:26wish controlled Nikki regains control
- 8:28and apologizes and calls her reaction a
- 8:30panic attack, and then just starts
- 8:31sobbing. As she sleeps, Bear researches
- 8:33the One Wish Willow, where the search
- 8:34results say it's a vintage toy from the
- 8:36'80s whose effects are debated as the
- 8:38Mandela effect on a Reddit alternative
- 8:40called Threadit. The comments all
- 8:42alternate yes and no on whether it
- 8:43actually works. Actually, there's a
- 8:45comment by Berenstain Bear Facts,
- 8:47referring to that Mandela effect
- 8:48conspiracy theory, claiming that this
- 8:50poster's mom was ugly her entire life,
- 8:52but is gorgeous now and doesn't even
- 8:53look old. After he goes back into the
- 8:55bedroom, wish corrupted Nikki is once
- 8:57again silhouetted in shadow by
- 8:59backlights staring right at him. The
- 9:00next morning, he finds that she's made
- 9:02breakfast for him, and as he walks into
- 9:03the kitchen and looks at the floor,
- 9:05there is a very quick creepy shot where
- 9:06Nikki quickly darts across the doorway
- 9:08behind him, but then the camera tilts
- 9:10down to see Nikki had taken Sandy the
- 9:11cat's corpse out as a kind of memorial.
- 9:13Yes, because obsession is not real love,
- 9:16obsession has no empathy. Obsession is
- 9:18what drives the characters in Stephen
- 9:19King's Pet Sematary to grotesquely
- 9:21unearth dead things that should have
- 9:22stayed buried, just like this. [music]
- 9:24As Bear tells Ian at work what happened,
- 9:26literally the moment wish corrupted
- 9:27Nikki gets to the register, out of focus
- 9:29in the background, she slowly turns to
- 9:31stare at the back of Bear's head, and
- 9:32every time we cut back to Bear for the
- 9:34next 3 minutes, we still see the blurry
- 9:36shape of her face just staring and
- 9:38frozen. She doesn't move the entire
- 9:40time. Later, when looking at the side
- 9:41effects of MDMA, we see that Bear's
- 9:43recent searches include yesterday,
- 9:45classic romance movies, how to play
- 9:47Green Day's "Basket Case" on marimba,
- 9:49last 7 days, how to woo a girl, how to
- 9:52impress a girl, how to flirt, how to
- 9:53know you've been friend-zoned, back in
- 9:55July, oxycodone, and in June, nursing
- 9:58homes, old people homes. Yeah, it's a
- 10:00reverse history of Bear finding a home
- 10:01for his grandmother and then researching
- 10:03the effects of oxy, and then at that
- 10:05point becoming infatuated with Nikki at
- 10:06work. Yeah, his infatuation seems like a
- 10:08very recent thing, kind of a resurfaced
- 10:107 years too late prom-posal, as he had
- 10:12described it. Now, in his profile shot,
- 10:14Wish Granted Nikki is hidden in the
- 10:15background, as we see her shadow shift
- 10:17in a motion in the curtains to the front
- 10:18door. She's now wearing a flirty red
- 10:20dress, and in the close-up on the front
- 10:22doorstep, there's an odd light reflected
- 10:24in her eyes. At this point, she
- 10:25manipulates Bear's anxieties over
- 10:27possibly taking advantage of a woman who
- 10:28was under the influence of drugs, but
- 10:30all it really takes is Wish Granted
- 10:32Nikki saying she might like him, saying,
- 10:34"Would it freak you out if I did?" Yes,
- 10:36suddenly embracing the freaky Nikki
- 10:38nomenclature, and then bam, they're off
- 10:40to the races. Curry Barker hilariously
- 10:42shoots this as kind of a rom-com date
- 10:44montage set to sweet music, but it's all
- 10:46very creepy knowing what Nikki has
- 10:48already done. They giggle over a meme
- 10:50that says, "I want to wear your skin as
- 10:52a sweater." Ugh. And you'll notice here
- 10:54that Wish Granted Nikki starts wearing a
- 10:56headband, just like that easily
- 10:58impressed waitress in the opening scene.
- 11:00There's a few shots of them watching a
- 11:01movie together, and Wish Granted Nikki
- 11:02keeps staring at him and Bear as if he's
- 11:05do this a bunch of times, moves her chin
- 11:07back to face the TV. Like he's still
- 11:09found comfort in just living with this
- 11:10scary presence, even though he knows
- 11:12it's not natural. Your financial info is
- 11:15yours, but it's easy to feel like you

- 13:07dinner, when Bear asks about her dad,
- 13:09Wish Granted Nikki picks up a knife,
- 13:11it's just a butter knife, but still a
- 13:12knife, and changes the subject. Bear
- 13:14jokes that he wants to become a food
- 13:15critic called Three Bite Bailey, and of
- 13:17course she's going to remember this
- 13:18tidbit. Ian calls Bear to say Nikki lied
- 13:20about her dad's cancer, and Bear takes
- 13:22this call under this tree design in the
- 13:24wall that visually reminds us this is
- 13:25all the result of the willow branch that
- 13:27he broke. It's so creepy to see Wish
- 13:28corrupted Nikki in the background just
- 13:30stepping out to watch Bear and then step
- 13:32behind the wall, freaking us out
- 13:34thinking that she's going to suddenly
- 13:35pop around the corner. But he goes back
- 13:36to the table and confronts Nikki about
- 13:38her dad.
- 13:38>> No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.
- 13:42No. No. No. No. No. No. NO. NO. NO.
- 13:44I THOUGHT WE WERE HAVING A NICE DAY.
- 13:47>> YES, that manic repeated no no no no no
- 13:49no no no no no no no no reminds me of
- 13:51Georgina's moment in Jordan Peele's Get
- 13:53Out when Chris confronts her.
- 13:55>> No.
- 13:56No.
- 13:58No.
- 13:59No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No.
- 14:02No. No. No.
- 14:03>> After sex, we get the creepiest scene of
- 14:05the movie. Bear looks for Nikki in his
- 14:06dark bedroom and at first we don't see
- 14:08her, but kind of like the iconic shot in
- 14:10Ari Aster's Hereditary that allowed the
- 14:12viewer's eye to gradually adjust to the
- 14:14darkness, we now see Wish corrupted
- 14:16Nikki in plain sight slinking out of the
- 14:18shadow in the corner at an unnatural
- 14:20speed and fluidity. And then after way
- 14:22too calmly talking to him, she retreats
- 14:24with the same odd fluidity back into the
- 14:26darkness that corner. And it looks like
- 14:27Ari Barker actually used some reverse
- 14:29photography for many of the movements
- 14:31here. She says, "I don't like my
- 14:33dreams." And then her voice distorts and
- 14:35says, "I feel like you don't love me as
- 14:37much as I do. Like it's not mutual."
- 14:42And her full face distorts as well so
- 14:44that she doesn't even look like herself,
- 14:46but it's kind of like a trick on our
- 14:47eyes because it's so dark we can't even
- 14:49make out her facial features and her
- 14:51lips certainly do not match her words
- 14:53here. Now, of course she doesn't like
- 14:54her dreams because in her dream she has
- 14:56to share a subconscious with the real
- 14:57Nikki. The next morning Bear notices
- 14:59Wish corrupted Nikki had cut some of his
- 15:01hair and confronts her about it. But
- 15:02notice that she's reading a book upside
- 15:04down here. She clearly was just staring
- 15:06at it blankly trying to look cute when
- 15:08Bear walked in. Nikki blames the
- 15:09behavior on just a bad dream and smiles
- 15:11extra tight. Ari Barker said that he
- 15:13watched the movie Pearl with the cast
- 15:15and this smile looks a lot like Mia
- 15:16Goth's iconic forced smile at the end of
- 15:18that film. Somehow this whole scene Bear
- 15:20missed the fact that Wish corrupted
- 15:22Nikki duct taped the door shut. I love
- 15:24the gag of him just gradually prying the
- 15:26door open in the lunch that she packed
- 15:28for Bear. She put two Polaroids, the
- 15:30second of which is a selfie of her
- 15:31smiling while he was sleeping labeled it
- 15:33not me. Maybe that was a subconscious
- 15:35cry for help from the real Nikki. Bear
- 15:37calls out Sarah for what Ian had said
- 15:38saying that she and Nikki were talking
- 15:40[ __ ] about Bear being friend-zoned, a
- 15:42brother figure to Nikki. And Sarah says,
- 15:44"Look, if Ian is spreading my [ __ ] then
- 15:45you should know." Before her dad cuts
- 15:47her off with an art school rejection
- 15:49letter. Yeah, she's about to tell Bear
- 15:51that Ian had been hooking up with Nikki.
- 15:52Unfortunately, Sarah doesn't get to tell
- 15:54him that until the final scene of her
- 15:56life. Had Bear found that out sooner, he
- 15:58may not have gone through the next
- 15:59couple things he goes through. Now here
- 16:01Sarah says, "Your lunch smells weird."
- 16:03And this is after he took a big bite of
- 16:05that sandwich where like a piece of the
- 16:06meat definitely dangled from his mouth.
- 16:08And she reads the back of the note that
- 16:10says, "What's the verdict, cat?" As Bear
- 16:12realizes that Nikki had made him a
- 16:14literal sandy witch. Ian accuses Bear of
- 16:17taking advantage of Nikki during her
- 16:18mental episode that he thinks she's
- 16:20going through. Well, interestingly,
- 16:21Sarah tells Bear that she thinks Nikki's
- 16:23taking advantage of him depending on his
- 16:25puppy love instead of going to therapy.
- 16:26It's kind of an interesting dichotomy
- 16:28between the relationships there. Bear
- 16:29calls the Tommy Cat customer support
- 16:31line.
- 16:31>> I I I just want to know if I can like
- 16:35alter it a little.
- 16:37>> I'm sorry, we don't really do that.
- 16:40>> This is the voice of director Curry
- 16:41Barker himself. This whole idea of the
- 16:42company refusing to alter wishes or even
- 16:44cancel wishes kind of comes from Barker
- 16:46just refusing to develop any lore or
- 16:48backstory for the one wish Willow has
- 16:49over this movie. He considers that not
- 16:51his job as a director and wants to leave
- 16:52it open for interpretation. And I kind
- 16:53of love that. But the operator does say
- 16:55that only death can break the spell over
- 16:57Nikki and that Bear has a moral
- 16:59obligation to be there for her. Then the
- 17:00operator allows Bear to hear the real
- 17:02Nikki who just screams in agony. Yes, I
- 17:05love the horrifying implication that
- 17:07this company somehow has access to
- 17:08whatever mental suffering may result
- 17:10from its customers' wishes. At Ian's
- 17:12party, Wish Granted Nikki laughs way too
- 17:14hard at a simple joke.
- 17:16>> [laughter]
- 17:21[laughter]
- 17:22>> Yeah, another red flag that you brought
- 17:24the wrong person to a party. Drawing a
- 17:26Jenga brick that apparently required her
- 17:27to embarrass herself or say some secret,
- 17:29Wish Scripted Nikki recites this passage
- 17:31from her story. And forgive me, but I'm
- 17:33now going to say the whole thing. The
- 17:35air was charged by the distant call of
- 17:37the night bird. His face was obscured,
- 17:39but I knew he was looking at my chest.
- 17:41Each side stretching recently matured to
- 17:43different sizes.
- 17:44>> Hansel, come be with me like the old
- 17:46woman taught us when we were children.
- 17:48>> I said. He closed the door and leaned
- 17:49against it.
- 17:50>> You're not my wife, Gretel.
- 17:52>> He said.
- 17:53>> I'm not only your wife, I'm your sister.
- 17:55>> Hansel flinched and reached for the door
- 17:57handle. I knew he would not leave this
- 17:58place. He would relent and choose to be
- 18:00inside me like he had many nights
- 18:01before. If not, I would fillet his meaty
- 18:03forearm, roll it like a stick of
- 18:05licorice, and insert the flesh between
- 18:06my legs. Hansel is my soul. Love only
- 18:09the branch of a willow tree could
- 18:10conjure. Brother, you will be inside me
- 18:12tonight.
- 18:12>> Hey, this movie stole MY WEDDING VOWS.
- 18:15>> [laughter]
- 18:19>> SO, OKAY. THIS disgusting incestuous
- 18:22Hansel and Gretel monologue was written
- 18:24by Curry's playwright Father Jeff
- 18:25Barker. And it really does speak to the
- 18:27way real Nikki said that she saw Bear as
- 18:29a brother mixed with the way Wish
- 18:31Scripted Nikki desires him sexually.
- 18:32Wish Scripted Nikki is really trying to
- 18:34do some of the creative writing that
- 18:35real Nikki was struggling with due to
- 18:37writer's block. And it all comes out in
- 18:39this grotesque way that she thinks will
- 18:40turn Bear on. Bear draws a block to kiss
- 18:43the person on his left, who meaning
- 18:44Sarah, and Wish Scripted Nikki hits us
- 18:46with this iconic pouty frown and drags
- 18:49Sarah out of the way and then puckers
- 18:50for a smooch. Real Nikki surfaces here
- 18:52and smashes a bottle to stab herself in
- 18:54the base twice before Wish Scripted
- 18:55Nikki regains control. I love Bear's
- 18:58reaction in this moment. He's horrified
- 19:00at first, but then he just kind of
- 19:01resigns and shuts down as he fully knows
- 19:04what he is committed to. Curry Barker
- 19:05revealed something interesting about
- 19:06this house. They shot this movie in fall
- 19:08of 2024 in the Burbank area. And then in
- 19:10January of 2025, the house where they
- 19:12shot this scene burned down in the LA
- 19:15fires, making this movie kind of part of
- 19:17the cursed history when it comes to
- 19:18iconic horror films and real life fires
- 19:20that consume the sets. During the
- 19:22filming of The Exorcist, a bird flew
- 19:24into a circuit box and burned down the
- 19:25MacNeil family home set, but Reagan's
- 19:28bedroom was untouched by the flames.
- 19:30Ooh. Back home, Bear asks Wish Corrupted
- 19:33Nikki, "Does Nikki like me? Is Nikki
- 19:35happy?" Yeah, he's trying to break
- 19:36through, and he knows for sure it's not
- 19:38really her when she embraces the
- 19:40nickname.
- 19:40>> I'm your freaky Nikki.
- 19:42>> Now there is a moment when Bear is
- 19:43almost swayed by Wish Corrupted Nikki
- 19:45saying, "I love you in every reality."
- 19:47But then she freaks him out again by
- 19:48reversing back into the shadows of the
- 19:50doorway. Yes, more reverse photography
- 19:52used there, and threatens to harm
- 19:53herself if he leaves. So he stays that
- 19:55night, but then after slipping out of
- 19:56bed to meet Sarah, the real Nikki calls
- 19:58to him while Wish Corrupted Nikki
- 20:00sleeps, begging Bear to kill her. But
- 20:03Bear responds, "What would be so bad
- 20:05about being with me?" Yeah, at this
- 20:06point we know Bear deserves everything
- 20:08bad that's coming his way. But there is
- 20:10a sweet moment of false victory with
- 20:12Bear and Sarah that just gets ruined
- 20:15when Wish Corrupted Nikki smashes
- 20:16through the glass and smashes Sarah's
- 20:18face against a brick. God, this is
- 20:21awful. It's hard to tell from the shock
- 20:23of this moment, but on each of the hits,
- 20:24if you listen closely, the brick presses
- 20:26against the steering wheel in a slight
- 20:28way that emits a little honk from the
- 20:30car. Oh God. Wish Corrupted Nikki tells
- 20:32a shocked Bear, "Sarah, it's all your
- 20:34fault. You wanted this. You wished for
- 20:36this." So this point we know Wish
- 20:38Corrupted Nikki is aware of her very
- 20:39existence coming solely from Bear's
- 20:41wish. And she knows how these one wish
- 20:43willows really work. They dispose the
- 20:45body at the music shop. Since Bear
- 20:46cannot break another willow twig, he
- 20:48brings a new one to Ian, but [ __ ] Ian
- 20:50wishes for a billion dollars, and money
- 20:52just rains from above. For a second I
- 20:54thought we were going to see Ian get
- 20:55crushed, because even in $100 bill
- 20:57denominations, a billion dollars weighs
- 21:0010 metric tons and takes up the space of
- 21:0210 industrial pallets. Yeah, it would
- 21:04easily fill Ian's living room. I guess
- 21:05there was an interview where Curry
- 21:07Barker said that even after Ian died,
- 21:09that money did not vanish, it still
- 21:10stayed in the house. So, I guess the
- 21:12death rule only really breaks the spell
- 21:14in cases of romantic obsession. Bear
- 21:15comes home to find another shrine to him
- 21:17made by Wish Granted Nikki that includes
- 21:19it looks like some pump lotion, maybe
- 21:21the kind Bear would have used to, you
- 21:24know, Nikki has further desecrated
- 21:26Sarah's corpse and we see that Nikki is
- 21:28now wearing Sarah's dress and she has
- 21:30drawn Sarah's tattoos on her body and
- 21:32since her hair has changed, she might be
- 21:34wearing Sarah's scalp here. Yeah, she's
- 21:36trying to make herself Sarah because
- 21:37Wish Granted Nikki is insane and she
- 21:39thinks that's what Bear wants. Ian
- 21:40barges in and Wish Granted Nikki shoots
- 21:42him. This would be from the loaded gun
- 21:44that Sarah's dad kept in the music store
- 21:46safe that they talked about earlier in
- 21:47the movie. Wish Granted Nikki got it
- 21:49when she stayed behind to deal with
- 21:50Sarah's body. Wish Granted Nikki vomits
- 21:52on Bear and finally he just screams,
- 21:54>> I love you.
- 21:56I love you.
- 21:56>> I LOVE YOU, BEAR.
- 21:57>> I LOVE [screaming] YOU.
- 21:59>> HE CALMS HER DOWN AND HE ENDS UP LOCKING
- 22:00himself in the bathroom. Through the
- 22:02door, a completely deranged Wish Granted
- 22:03Nikki says calmly,
- 22:04>> I think we should break up.
- 22:06>> Yeah, one last emotional manipulation.
- 22:08Bear cannot bring himself to pull the
- 22:09trigger, but he remembers his
- 22:10grandmother's oxy in the medicine
- 22:12cabinet that had killed the cat. So, he
- 22:13ingests the pills and before he
- 22:15instinctively moves to purge, we hear a
- 22:17chime of a one-wish willow in the other
- 22:18room and a snap and we now have a Wish
- 22:20Granted Bear willed into existence by
- 22:23Wish Granted Nikki to love her back.
- 22:24But, the oxy kicks in as the camera
- 22:26moves down past the snap twig. Wish
- 22:28Granted Nikki sobs and grabs the gun and
- 22:30just before she Juliets herself, Bear's
- 22:32death brings real Nikki back to the
- 22:34surface. Poor real Nikki completely
- 22:36loses it to realize her three best
- 22:37friends are all dead in the house with
- 22:39her. Or rather, her two best friends and
- 22:41the one guy who ruined her life. Curry
- 22:43Barker planned for an alternate ending
- 22:44where Nikki would have died as well, but
- 22:46they went with this option of Nikki
- 22:47screaming in shock. It's arguably even
- 22:49darker because she was the one to steal
- 22:51the gun from that music store that
- 22:52probably had security cameras. So, any
- 22:54police investigating this are going to
- 22:56pin all three deaths on her. Yes, a
- 22:58woman who committed the only crime of
- 22:59flashing a fleeting smile at a friend.
- 23:02Bravo to fellow YouTuber Curry Barker
- 23:04for shooting this movie for less than a
- 23:06million dollars, getting it picked up by
- 23:08Focus Features and Blumhouse for 15
- 23:09million dollars, and then being the
- 23:11first movie since E.T. Yes, Steven
- 23:14Spielberg's E.T. in 1982 to open wide
- 23:17and increase its box office weekend over
- 23:19weekend, when normally it's the
- 23:20opposite. Big opening and dropping off
- 23:22weekend over weekend. It's so successful
- 23:24that it convinced Universal to drop a
- 23:26planned June 2nd streaming date and
- 23:28extend its theatrical window. It's
- 23:30tracking to make nearly 300 million
- 23:32dollars worldwide, if not more than
- 23:34that. It's beating The Mandalorian and
- 23:35Grogu. That is insane success, and it
- 23:38speaks to the power of a simple story
- 23:40executed perfectly with great writing
- 23:42and performances that are really
- 23:43connecting with viewers. Comment down
