OBSESSION: 10 Unanswered Questions & Freaky Nikki Theories! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Freaky Nikki moves like this in
- 0:01Obsession because the two Nikkis are
- 0:03actually fighting for control over her
- 0:04body. Yes, the whole movie is about body
- 0:06autonomy. I'm Eric Boss of the New
- 0:08Rockstars channel and here are 10
- 0:10unanswered questions from Obsession, the
- 0:12record-breaking horror film of this
- 0:13summer directed by Curry Barker and my
- 0:15favorite movie that I've seen so far
- 0:17this year. I already broke down a bunch
- 0:19of little details that you might have
- 0:20missed from this film in this video, but
- 0:22after I saw the film again, I realized
- 0:24there are actually a lot of unanswered
- 0:26questions and theories about the movie
- 0:27that I wanted to try to cover in this
- 0:29video. Number one, what happens to Nikki
- 0:31after this movie? Bear's wish only fades
- 0:33and releases Freaky Nikki's control over
- 0:35real Nikki's body when Bear fully dies.
- 0:37So, basically poor Nikki wakes up with
- 0:39her three friends dead in this house
- 0:42with her and her own body and psyche
- 0:43having gone through some brutal trauma.
- 0:45Nikki Freeman is probably going to
- 0:47prison for the murders of Ian and Sarah
- 0:49and probably also for being connected to
- 0:51Bear's death. Here's what Curry Barker
- 0:52said about the epilogue for Nikki.
- 0:54>> She probably goes to to jail.
- 0:57She's probably going to prison for a
- 0:59very long time. There's also like a
- 1:01billion dollars in Ian's house and Ian's
- 1:04dead on the floor, so she's connected to
- 1:06that money in some way.
- 1:08Uh who knows
- 1:11what the cops are going to kind of put
- 1:14together as the story, but she's not
- 1:16going to have a very good life, I don't
- 1:18think. It's a very sad.
- 1:20>> Ah, but Curry Barker does remind us that
- 1:22the billion dollars that Ian wished for
- 1:24is still in his house. That would be 10
- 1:26metric tons of cash piled up to the
- 1:28windows. Now, he said it here to suggest
- 1:30that the police would implicate her with
- 1:32that money. How would one possibly even
- 1:34steal a billion dollars worth of cash?
- 1:36But, I think it also presents us with
- 1:37another possible happy ending where
- 1:39Nikki could quickly gather up as much of
- 1:41that money as she could carry and live
- 1:43comfortably off the grid for the rest of
- 1:44her life and have a kind of Shawshank
- 1:46Redemption beach ending for herself. I
- 1:48guess this would be as comfortable as
- 1:49one could possibly feel after going
- 1:51through what she went through. And hey,
- 1:53think about it, if Nikki were able to
- 1:54get away, maybe there's a way blame
- 1:55could have then been shifted to Sarah's
- 1:57father, Andy Richter's character, like a
- 1:59music store owner who just went crazy
- 2:00and killed his daughter for leaving him
- 2:02behind after she got into this new art
- 2:03school, and killed her and his other
- 2:05three employees, which the cops might
- 2:06assume because they never would have
- 2:08found Nikki's body. But, her blood would
- 2:09have been all over the crime scene. Two,
- 2:11what did real Nikki experience in this
- 2:13movie? It's honestly the most horrifying
- 2:16thing to really consider. I mean, this
- 2:17movie gets way scarier and more dramatic
- 2:19when you rewatch it from the perspective
- 2:21of real Nikki trapped in her own body as
- 2:23freaky Nikki controls her motor
- 2:24functions. There were the various
- 2:25moments that we saw real Nikki breaking
- 2:27through the surface, like when freaky
- 2:28Nikki first stands at Bear's car window
- 2:30and real Nikki catches herself for a
- 2:32second asking what's going on. And then
- 2:33when freaky Nikki kisses Bear in his
- 2:35bed, real Nikki surfaces for a moment
- 2:37and screams and jumps off the bed. Then
- 2:38later when freaky Nikki packs Bear's
- 2:40lunch, it must be real Nikki who writes
- 2:42not me on the Polaroid. Then when Bear
- 2:44calls the customer service line, we hear
- 2:46real Nikki screaming from some place.
- 2:48And then at Ian's party, real Nikki
- 2:50comes out at one point and repeatedly
- 2:51screams, "It's not me." while trying to
- 2:53smash her face with a bottle. And then
- 2:55while freaky Nikki sleeps, real Nikki
- 2:57quietly begs Bear to kill her. And then
- 2:58at the end of the movie, maybe you
- 2:59missed this, but while she's dressed as
- 3:01Sarah with Sarah's tattoos and wearing
- 3:03Sarah's scalp, after hitting herself
- 3:05with a brick, her legs go wobbly and she
- 3:07says, "Stop, stop." which I think is
- 3:08real Nikki in that brief moment. So,
- 3:11based on all of these moments, real
- 3:12Nikki experiences everything. And yes,
- 3:15that includes Bear assaulting her. In my
- 3:17other video, I mistakenly called it sex
- 3:18because I guess I was under the
- 3:20assumption that freaky Nikki was capable
- 3:21of consent, but the reality is what Bear
- 3:24did there was straight-up assault. You
- 3:25know, the four-letter R-word that
- 3:27YouTube won't even let us say in videos.
- 3:29I really did not mean to minimize that,
- 3:30but that awful, awful truth underscores
- 3:32the following scene where freaky Nikki
- 3:34watches Bear sleep from the shadows and
- 3:36scares him with her movement, and then
- 3:38her face distorts as she screams that
- 3:40she doesn't like her dreams. Of course,
- 3:41freaky Nikki doesn't like her dreams
- 3:43because she has to share her
- 3:44subconscious with real Nikki. But yes,
- 3:46throughout this movie, imagine that real
- 3:48Nikki has to experience things like
- 3:50standing completely still for several
- 3:51hours smiling as she soils herself.
- 3:54Things like smashing her best friend
- 3:55Sarah's face with a brick and then
- 3:57further desecrating Sarah's corpse. But
- 3:59there was also this evidence of what
- 4:00real Nikki was going through. How and
- 4:02why does Freaky Nikki move backwards?
- 4:04Well, Curry Barker clearly used reverse
- 4:06photography with actress Indiana Varret
- 4:08to achieve a common horror cinema visual
- 4:10motive and it works quite well on its
- 4:12own as a creepy visual to show something
- 4:14is off about Freaky Nikki. But it's also
- 4:16a somewhat supernatural flare for a
- 4:18character who is not demonically
- 4:20possessed according to the director, but
- 4:22is rather just a newly created persona
- 4:23of pure obsession by Bear's wish. Well,
- 4:26if you look closely at the backwards
- 4:27movement, it isn't just Indy walking
- 4:29normally then reversed. It's actually
- 4:31Indy taking extra wide very weird steps
- 4:34forward and then that movement being
- 4:36reversed. That's why I really like this
- 4:37interpretation that the backwards
- 4:39movement is actually a physical struggle
- 4:41between Freaky Nikki and Real Nikki for
- 4:43control over this one body. Real Nikki
- 4:45is trying to rush toward Bear to kill
- 4:47him in these moments while Freaky Nikki
- 4:48is more powerfully restraining the body
- 4:51backwards and winning that struggle
- 4:52resulting in this unnatural backwards
- 4:54movement. And I would love that if
- 4:56that's true because it would mean that
- 4:57every time you see Freaky Nikki move
- 4:58this way throughout the film, it's not
- 5:00just like a scary visual. It's a
- 5:01representation of the deeper truth theme
- 5:03of this movie. Not just a story about
- 5:05toxic obsession, but a story about body
- 5:07autonomy. Four, why is Freaky Nikki
- 5:09obsessed with the dead cat? Well, Freaky
- 5:10Nikki's obsession with Sandy has been
- 5:12interpreted by some theories as evidence
- 5:14that Sandy the cat could have
- 5:16reincarnated as the Freaky Nikki
- 5:17persona. I love this theory and all the
- 5:20evidence for it. Like that shining
- 5:21reflection in Freaky Nikki's eyes like a
- 5:23cat, the way she waits by the door all
- 5:25day long, the way she keeps digging up
- 5:27the dead cat's body, the way she's
- 5:29obsessed with Bear's smell, and that
- 5:30creepy tiptoe way of walking. I also
- 5:33just love any fan theory that
- 5:34reincarnates a dead character as a cat
- 5:36like the cat in The Sopranos who looks
- 5:38at the picture of Christopher
- 5:39Moltisanti. If you know, you know.
- 5:40However, Curry Barker has clearly stated
- 5:42that obsession is not a possession
- 5:44story. Freaky Nikki is a persona created
- 5:46by Bear's wish. So, I think a more
- 5:48accurate read of Freaky Nikki's
- 5:49obsession with Sandy is that Freaky
- 5:51Nikki just sees the dead cat as
- 5:52something Bear loved and took care of.
- 5:54So, she's kind of behaviorally
- 5:56recreating the cat as a way to try to
- 5:58make Bear love her. And because she's
- 6:00this weird grotesque shadow of a human
- 6:02being, she just gets it horribly wrong.
- 6:03Five, did real Nikki want Bear to say
- 6:06that he liked her? So, the moment Bear
- 6:08calls her Freaky Nikki after dropping
- 6:10her off and it really offends her, Nikki
- 6:12confronts Bear asking, "Do you like me?"
- 6:14Cuz if you do, "now would be the time to
- 6:15tell me." Bear backs off saying he
- 6:17thinks they're good friends and Nikki
- 6:19gives this interesting vague response.
- 6:20She says, "Okay." And then she tucks her
- 6:22hair behind her ear and says, "Good.
- 6:24Good night." And kind of awkwardly turns
- 6:25away. Some are reading this as
- 6:27disappointment from Nikki, that Nikki
- 6:28secretly wanted Bear to say that he
- 6:30liked her in this moment. And I think
- 6:31it's valid to read it that way. Indeed,
- 6:33I wrote told The Hollywood Reporter that
- 6:35she and Corinne Barker shot these
- 6:36earlier scenes of the movie with
- 6:37different takes that would deliberately
- 6:39alternate the way Nikki seemed to feel
- 6:41about Bear in that take. And some takes
- 6:43she played it slightly flirty. Another
- 6:45take she played it completely
- 6:46uninterested, but either way they wanted
- 6:47it to be ambiguous. And the actress did
- 6:50admit playing this line with a little
- 6:52disappointment because she said Nikki
- 6:53felt a vibe from Bear. Now, Nikki
- 6:56feeling a vibe does not mean that she
- 6:58returned those feelings for Bear. When
- 7:00you rewatch the movie, it's clear that
- 7:01everything Nikki does during trivia
- 7:02night is A, a brother-sister affection
- 7:05and B, trying to set up Bear with Sarah.
- 7:07Like the reason Nikki even begs Bear to
- 7:09come to trivia night over the phone is
- 7:11for Sarah. She refuses to let Bear pay
- 7:12for their drinks. She's disappointed
- 7:14that Bear doesn't like the taste of
- 7:15alcohol because she knows him getting
- 7:17drunk is actually going to be the
- 7:18easiest path to him ending up hooking up
- 7:20with Sarah at karaoke afterward.
- 7:22Actually, later during the Jenga scene
- 7:23when Bear considers kissing Sarah on his
- 7:25left from the Jenga brick, it's really
- 7:27just because he doesn't want to take a
- 7:28sip of beer because he doesn't like the
- 7:29taste of alcohol. And then on the car
- 7:31ride home, of course, Nikki asks Bear
- 7:32how he feels about Sarah. All signs in
- 7:35the opening minutes of this movie point
- 7:36to Nikki just being a nice chill
- 7:38supportive friend. The internet is like
- 7:40a road that we all have to drive on
- 7:41every day to get to work, to get home,
- 7:43to run errands. It's just a fact of
- 7:45life. And just like there are cars that
- 7:47are better at off-roading or better at
- 7:49hitting 100 miles an hour, there are
- 7:50browsers that handle different parts of
- 7:52the internet better than others. For
- 7:54streaming video, the best browser you
- 7:55can get is Opera. I spend an
- 7:57embarrassing amount of time watching
- 7:59videos while I work. YouTube video
- 8:01essays, podcasts, Disney Plus, random
- 8:03movies that I think might be relevant to
- 8:05a future breakdown. It's a huge chunk of
- 8:07my day. Opera lets you access YouTube or
- 8:09Twitch with one click in a sidebar,
- 8:11saving you the hassle of navigating a
- 8:13sprawling series of tabs. It's great for
- 8:15multitasking, so you can have a video on
- 8:17while you browse. If you'd rather, you
- 8:19can pop the video out to a floating
- 8:20window that you can move anywhere on
- 8:22your screen, inside or outside the
- 8:24browser, so you never lose track of it
- 8:26while you're working. Browser also has a
- 8:28built-in audio boost, letting you
- 8:29enhance the volume of old media up to
- 8:32500% so that you can enjoy crystal clear
- 8:34audio without any plugins or extensions.
- 8:37And with lucid mode, Opera lets you
- 8:39enhance blurry videos for optimized
- 8:41playback just with a single click. Plus,
- 8:43there's a variety of dark themes, static
- 8:45and animated, to help reduce eye strain
- 8:47when you're watching content. Any one of
- 8:49these things on their own would make
- 8:51Opera a better browser for streaming
- 8:52video, but taken together, they make
- 8:54Opera the best browser for streaming
- 8:56video. Try it for yourself and see.
- 8:58Click the link in the description to
- 8:59download Opera, then come back and watch
- 9:01this video so you can see the
- 9:03improvements for yourself. Six, where
- 9:05did the nickname Freaky Nikki come from?
- 9:07Well, based on how much it clearly hurts
- 9:09Nikki, it seems to have been some cruel
- 9:11middle school rumor about some sexual
- 9:13acts that Nikki might have performed or
- 9:15was into. The way middle school students
- 9:16can just be so cruel that way,
- 9:18especially with girls. This might be
- 9:19some history that Nikki would have
- 9:20discussed in a vulnerable conversation
- 9:22with Ian that Ian knew she was still
- 9:24sensitive about and deliberately told
- 9:26Bear to call her that in order to
- 9:27sabotage Bear. But, it's also possible
- 9:29that the freaky moniker was just derived
- 9:31from some of Nikki's other interests,
- 9:32like, you know, she wears crystals,
- 9:34she's into creative writing. Actually,
- 9:36that Hansel and Gretel passage has been
- 9:37debated by people watching this movie.
- 9:39While I still think that that was just
- 9:40freaky Nikki trying and completely
- 9:42failing to produce some kinky erotica to
- 9:44impress everyone, I think it's also
- 9:46valid to see that as some erotica that
- 9:48real Nikki had actually written, maybe
- 9:50while trying to break out of her
- 9:51writer's block, something that she felt
- 9:53ashamed over, but maybe also the kind of
- 9:55writing that she wrote as a middle
- 9:56school student that she shared in a
- 9:58moment of vulnerability with another kid
- 10:00who then bullied her for it, or
- 10:01something that a kid saw in her notebook
- 10:03in her backpack and took it out. just
- 10:05started calling her freaky Nikki based
- 10:06on that. I still think the Hansel and
- 10:08Gretel monologue was just some what the
- 10:09[ __ ] [ __ ] that freaky Nikki came up
- 10:11with, but let me know in the comments
- 10:12below how you read that. Seven, how far
- 10:14back does Bear's crush on Nikki actually
- 10:16go? Well, the opening diner scene
- 10:18suggests that Bear has been crushing on
- 10:19Nikki for years because Ian calls his
- 10:21speech a quote seven year late proposal,
- 10:23suggesting that they're around 25 years
- 10:25old and that Bear has liked her since
- 10:27high school. But in my breakdown of the
- 10:28movie, I spotted Bear's recent search
- 10:30history on his Probe search engine. On
- 10:32the margin we see yesterday, classic
- 10:34romance movies, how to play Green Day's
- 10:36"Basket Case" on marimba, last seven
- 10:38days, how to woo a girl, how to impress
- 10:40a girl, how to flirt, how to know you've
- 10:41been friend-zoned, July, oxycodone,
- 10:44June, nursing homes, old people homes.
- 10:46So, doing some reverse chronology here,
- 10:49Bear's grandmother died just within the
- 10:51past two months. And shortly after that,
- 10:52Nikki supposedly comforted him, and then
- 10:54just in the past seven days he began
- 10:56searching for flirting tips? I think his
- 10:58entire interest in Nikki happened
- 11:00relatively recently. I don't think this
- 11:02is a long-held high school crush. It's
- 11:04more of a fleeting obsession with a
- 11:05woman he worked with who he'd been
- 11:06around for a while, who one day just
- 11:08looked at him a certain way that made
- 11:09him think, "She's going to be the answer
- 11:11to all my problems." Despite the fact
- 11:12that he doesn't know her that well. And
- 11:14to me, that would make Bear's interest
- 11:16in Nikki even darker, even from the
- 11:17beginning of the movie. I think from the
- 11:19get-go, there's nothing genuinely
- 11:21sentimental about it, despite the sappy
- 11:23romantic music that we hear over the
- 11:24monologue. So, when we see those photo
- 11:26booth photos in his bedroom, when he's
- 11:28clearly dragging her in the booth with
- 11:30him, and she's not very happy about it,
- 11:32and this is why he's going directly from
- 11:33disposing his dead cat to just scrolling
- 11:35through Nikki's Instagram. Yeah, it all
- 11:37very much adds up to toxic incel
- 11:39behavior. Eight, what about the other
- 11:40wishes? Like when Bear goes back into
- 11:42the gift shop to buy another one wish
- 11:44willow and asks the new male clerk to
- 11:46make a wish for him. This clerk says, "I
- 11:48already used my wish, man." Now, some
- 11:49interpretations out there are saying
- 11:51that the wish was made by the female
- 11:52clerk earlier in the movie to transition
- 11:54into a male. Look, if that's how you
- 11:56want to read this movie, I'm not going
- 11:57to fight you on it. I'll say that this
- 11:58male clerk does have the same jaded
- 12:00customer service vibe as the first
- 12:02clerk. But without doxing myself too
- 12:04much, I do actually live in the Burbank
- 12:05neighborhood of the Green Man shop where
- 12:07they shot this. And I can confirm that
- 12:09all these spooky gift shops on Halloween
- 12:11row in this area tend to have a day
- 12:12shift staff and a night shift staff who
- 12:14just tend to be synced within the same
- 12:16cultural vibe of the store. Actually, I
- 12:18think it was all these familiar San
- 12:19Fernando Valley locations that made me
- 12:21love this movie even more. The
- 12:22restaurant scene was shot at Little
- 12:23Tony's, the NoHo pizza restaurant that I
- 12:25used to live right across the street
- 12:26from. I still go to it all the time. But
- 12:28I actually think this guy's wish was
- 12:30something small and simple, like either
- 12:32becoming owner of the shop or rather
- 12:34maybe just getting the preferential
- 12:36slower day shift, leaving his grumpy
- 12:38coworker to have to take the night shift
- 12:39when people will come in right at
- 12:41closing. My theory is the simpler the
- 12:43wish, the less drama it brings into your
- 12:45life. Nine, why did Bear have the
- 12:47sleeping pills? Remember in Bear's last
- 12:49scene with Sarah in the car? They're
- 12:50joking about drugging her dad and he
- 12:52mentions, "I have sleeping pills in my
- 12:53pocket." Those are sleeping pills, not
- 12:55the oxy pills that are in the medicine
- 12:57cabinet. Remember, this scene comes
- 12:58right after Freaky Nikki was asleep and
- 13:00real Nikki begs Bear to kill her. I
- 13:02wonder if Bear might have tried to drug
- 13:04Freaky Nikki to keep her docile after
- 13:06everything that happened at the party or
- 13:07maybe planned to drug her again after
- 13:09realizing real Nikki's voice can come
- 13:11out of the body when it's sleeping. And
- 13:13this messed up predator might have been
- 13:15planning to do something with Nikki's
- 13:18sleeping body to try to like connect
- 13:20with real Nikki while Freaky Nikki
- 13:22slept. It's just when he said, "What
- 13:24would be so bad about living with me?"
- 13:26that made me think this guy needs to be
- 13:27in prison. I do not like Bear at all at
- 13:29this point in the movie. I don't trust
- 13:31him at all and I think he's capable of
- 13:32horrible, horrible things. And 10, how
- 13:35did the One Wish Willow customer service
- 13:36have access to real Nikki? Cory Barker
- 13:39himself voices this character and when
- 13:41asked about the customer service line in
- 13:42interviews, he said that this screaming
- 13:44Nikki is being kept in, quote, some sort
- 13:46of purgatory, but who knows? Actually,
- 13:48this very fun theory from Redditor
- 13:50International Crow 22 suggests that the
- 13:52One Wish Willow works by merging
- 13:54parallel realities. A reality where
- 13:56Nikki was obsessed with Bear and this
- 13:58reality where she isn't obsessed with
- 13:59Bear, which is why freaky Nikki screams
- 14:01that she loves Bear in every reality.
- 14:04And here's my contribution to this
- 14:05theory. Look at the company name, Tabby
- 14:07Cat. I think that could be a reference
- 14:08to Schrödinger's cat, the very first
- 14:10thought experiment in history of
- 14:12multiverse theory where an unseen cat in
- 14:14a box with a dish of poison food and
- 14:16normal food is both alive and dead at
- 14:18the same time in two different
- 14:20realities. There could actually be a
- 14:21parallel here with Sandy eating Oxy when
- 14:24cat food was right there on the floor.
- 14:25And so the operator played by Cory
- 14:27Barker could be a kind of bored company
- 14:28representative who has some kind of
- 14:30telecommunicative access to these
- 14:31ultimate realities through some kind of
