- 0:36videos are reaching. I also want to
- 0:39remind you that every Tuesday there's a
- 0:41new video here on the channel, and many
- 0:43of the topics I address are ones you
- 0:45bring to me through comments, email,
- 0:48and also through my social media. So,
- 0:50if you have any questions or want me to
- 0:52talk about a specific subject, don't
- 0:54hesitate to send it to me. Today the
- 0:57topic we're going to cover is one of
- 0:59the most important themes that came
- 1:01along with the BNCC, but which has
- 1:03always sparked a lot of controversy. It
- 1:05is the languages of art and the need
- 1:08for the art teacher's polyvalence. If
- 1:11we go out on the street and ask what
- 1:13people remember most from their art
- 1:15classes, the answer we'll likely hear
- 1:17most is: drawing, to draw. It was and
- 1:21still is very common in schools for art
- 1:23education to be tied exclusively to the
- 1:26teaching of drawing. I've heard many
- 1:28teachers say they didn't or don't teach
- 1:30art because they don't know how to draw
- 1:32. But in today's video, we'll clarify
- 1:35that drawing is indeed important, but
- 1:37art is not just drawing and it goes
- 1:38much further than that. If you didn't
- 1:42know, since the 1997 PCNs, the national
- 1:45curriculum parameters for art, art was
- 1:47already divided into four main content
- 1:50axes: theater, dance, visual arts, and
- 1:53music. These have remained until today,
- 1:57and after the creation and
- 1:58implementation of the BNCC in 2020, a
- 2:00fifth language became part of the
- 2:02content. The name of this fifth
- 2:05language is integrated arts. Let's talk
- 2:08a little bit about each of them and how
- 2:10they are organized in the school
- 2:11context. But first, let's synthesize
- 2:14the terminology so we don't forget it,
- 2:16because it's important. Art, and not
- 2:19arts, is a curricular component that
- 2:21falls within the language area along
- 2:23with English, Portuguese, and physical
- 2:26education. In this art curricular
- 2:29component, we have the languages, or as
- 2:32we can also call them, thematic units.
- 2:35They are the ones I just mentioned:
- 2:36theater, dance, music, visual arts, and
- 2:38integrated arts. Furthermore, we have
- 2:41knowledge objects, which are areas that
- 2:44separate knowledge levels by skills.
- 2:47Remembering that, in addition, the BNCC
- 2:49separates art into early years and
- 2:51final years. It is worth noting that
- 2:53when we talk about visual arts, we are
- 2:55talking about various languages within
- 2:57a macro field. Drawing is here, but
- 3:01there is also sculpture, painting,
- 3:02photography, cinema, printmaking,
- 3:04performance, collage, and many others.
- 3:08As I said at the beginning of the video
- 3:10, the subject is controversial because
- 3:11each of these areas is full of content
- 3:13and demands teacher expertise. But in
- 3:16the school reality, in schools,
- 3:18day-to-day, what we have is a teacher
- 3:21who is trained in only one of these
- 3:23areas and needs to teach all the
- 3:25languages. That is when the art class
- 3:27is taught by a teacher, because often
- 3:29art class is assigned to another
- 3:31teacher who needs to complete their
- 3:33workload, or a generalist teacher, who
- 3:35is trained in pedagogy and has to
- 3:37master all areas. And why is it
- 3:39important to work with each of these
- 3:41languages? When we teach each of them,
- 3:44we are developing specific skills. We
- 3:47are giving the student an introduction
- 3:49to each one, providing opportunities
- 3:51for them to discover different things.
- 3:54Want a practical example to remember?
- 3:56When we teach Portuguese because it is
- 3:58important, we don't stop teaching math
- 4:00because it is also important in the
- 4:02student's life. So, why would I teach
- 4:05only drawing if music is just as
- 4:07important? When we work with dance, for
- 4:10example, we raise very important
- 4:12questions for our society, such as this
- 4:15duality dispute: body and mind, popular
- 4:17and erudite, theory and practice. And
- 4:20if you don't dance, how are you going
- 4:22to teach someone to dance? It is this
- 4:24point that sparks debate. Nobody
- 4:26teaches what they don't know. That is
- 4:28why educators and art scholars advocate
- 4:30so strongly for art education by
- 4:32qualified professionals from the field.
- 4:35But since we live in a country that
- 4:37doesn't give art the importance it
- 4:39needs, the teacher has to manage all
- 4:41this content. After all, much of the
- 4:43content that reaches our students,
- 4:45providing young people with a cultural
- 4:48repertoire, is offered by the school
- 4:50and the teacher. Therefore, even if we
- 4:53don't master different fields, teachers
- 4:55can use certain resources to help them
- 4:57learn and teach, like watching courses
- 4:59or live streams, reading articles, or
- 5:01anything that adds to that knowledge.
- 5:04Once again, I am not diminishing the
- 5:06importance of the specialist teacher,
- 5:07but rather helping with some
- 5:09reflections for everyday life. This
- 5:11applies to theater, dance, music, and
- 5:13the visual arts. Not mastering all or
- 5:16any of these languages is a challenge
- 5:18that we need to overcome. But while we
- 5:20are experiencing this parallel process,
- 5:22it is important for the teacher to
- 5:24understand that we cannot deprive the
- 5:26student of any of these languages.
- 5:28Integrated arts, which was that fifth
- 5:30language that emerged, came with the
- 5:32intention of unifying these languages.
- 5:35Beyond working on the isolated concept
- 5:37of each one, we will also make
- 5:39connections between two or more, and
- 5:42add technology as a tool to produce art
- 5:44. This object of knowledge serves as a
- 5:47bridge to connect these languages and
- 5:49show the student that education cannot
- 5:52be fragmented and separated into those
- 5:54famous little boxes. Let's remember
- 5:57that the role of the art teacher goes
- 5:59far beyond teaching content; it
- 6:00involves prompting reflection,
- 6:02promoting expression, raising critical
- 6:04awareness, and expanding our student's
- 6:06cultural repertoire. That's it for
- 6:09today. I hope this has helped you in
- 6:10some way. Don't forget to subscribe to
- 6:13the channel, turn on notifications, and
- 6:15send your suggestions, questions, or
- 6:17critiques for future videos in the
- 6:19comments. You already know, but it's
- 6:22worth remembering: there's a new video
- 6:23here on the channel every Tuesday. I
- 6:25look forward to your participation. See
- 6:27you soon. Bye.
