  1. 0:05Welcome to Salad with a Side of Fries.
  2. 0:07I'm your host, [music] Jen Trepik,
  3. 0:09talking wellness and weight loss for
  4. 0:11real life. We're here to clear up the
  5. 0:13myths, misinformation, bad science, and
  6. 0:15marketing to teach you how to eat and
  7. 0:18how to cheat. Are you ready? I'm having
  8. 0:20salad [music] with a side of fries.
  9. 0:23This week, we're talking about
  10. 0:25Drizzylicious. So, first shout out to
  11. 0:27Caitlyn on my social media team for this
  12. 0:30one. So, she said not only has she tried
  13. 0:32them, they're her latest obsession.
  14. 0:36She sent them to me to say maybe these
  15. 0:39are a great nutrition nugget. So, here
  16. 0:40we are. Now, per usual, I started at
  17. 0:43their website. They say it's drizzled
  18. 0:45and it's delicious. Drizzly, the
  19. 0:47irresistible better for you snack. I
  20. 0:51mean, okay. While they have Caitlyn's
  21. 0:53endorsement on the flavor, I see at the
  22. 0:56top of the website in the image, they
  23. 0:58have three packages and it says, "Many
  24. 1:01rice cakes reimagined." Now, if you're a
  25. 1:04longtime listener and you know that
  26. 1:06phrase made my antenna go up because in
  27. 1:09our nutrition nugget on rice cakes, we
  28. 1:12determined that they are the
  29. 1:14quintessential definition of empty
  30. 1:16calories. So, I'm very curious if these
  31. 1:20are two. Now, they say it has chia,
  32. 1:24quinoa, and flax. 90 calories per 21
  33. 1:27pieces. So, these must be teeny. Like,
  34. 1:30I'm guessing size of a quarter, maybe a
  35. 1:33nickel. And they're featuring some
  36. 1:36holiday flavors like peppermint and
  37. 1:38gingerbread. They also drizzled popcorn,
  38. 1:40so maybe that's a topic for another
  39. 1:42nutrition nugget. We're staying with
  40. 1:43Caitlyn's choice of the rice cake. Okay.
  41. 1:46Then it says, "At just 90 calories per
  42. 1:4921 pieces, Drizzylicious is a smart
  43. 1:51little snack you can feel great about.
  44. 1:53Full disclosure, I'm not sold yet,
  45. 1:55[laughter] right? We'll see about that."
  46. 1:57All right. Then it says, "Allergenfree.
  47. 1:59Our products are made in a peanut and
  48. 2:01tree nut-free facility and are all
  49. 2:03allergen-free." Okay, that might be a
  50. 2:05selling point for you. Then we see
  51. 2:07certified gluten-free, non-GMO, product
  52. 2:10verified, vegan, and certified kosher.
  53. 2:13And these may make them winners for some
  54. 2:16people. For other people, it kind of
  55. 2:18just is what it is. And neither here nor
  56. 2:20there. Now, since we're focusing on the
  57. 2:22rice cakes, I'm just going to, you know,
  58. 2:25share that piece. So, they say, "Our
  59. 2:26rice cakes are really special, or our
  60. 2:29rice cakes really are special. With just
  61. 2:3290 calories per 21 pieces, you'll be
  62. 2:34amazed you can finally eat something
  63. 2:36delicious you don't feel guilty about.
  64. 2:38Available in a multitude of flavors,
  65. 2:39this fan favorite is no stranger to the
  66. 2:42average snacker. Go ahead, enjoy
  67. 2:43yourself and indulge guiltlessly. So,
  68. 2:46for what it's worth, they had two typos
  69. 2:48in there. If anybody from Drizzylicious
  70. 2:50is listening, just FYI, take a look. Let
  71. 2:52me know if you want me to proofread it
  72. 2:54for you. Okay, so the thing is is we're
  73. 2:58not learning anything new. Every time
  74. 3:00they have the chance to tell us
  75. 3:01something, they just reiterate the same
  76. 3:03thing of 90 calories, 21 pieces. We get
  77. 3:06it. Okay. I tried to look up, you know,
  78. 3:08a little bit more about the company.
  79. 3:09Where did it come from? So, it sounds
  80. 3:11like the founders are either siblings or
  81. 3:16they both had moms who gave them rice
  82. 3:18cakes with peanut butter. I'm not
  83. 3:20totally sure either way, but essentially
  84. 3:22they were rice cake fans, so they
  85. 3:24decided to upgrade them. And then again,
  86. 3:26it continues to repeat all the same
  87. 3:28things. So, let's look at the nutrition
  88. 3:30facts. Caitlyn said she loves the
  89. 3:32cinnamon flavor. So, that's where I
  90. 3:34went. They describe it as mini rice cake
  91. 3:38with cinnamon swirled and glazed with
  92. 3:40white chocolaty drizzle. Now, I'm
  93. 3:43noticing it's not a white chocolate
  94. 3:45drizzle. So, there's probably using
  95. 3:48things to mimic that flavor versus
  96. 3:50actually just using some white
  97. 3:51chocolate, but let's see. By the way,
  98. 3:53they're now touting 100% plant-based.
  99. 3:56And all that means is that there's no
  100. 3:57animal product in here, which frankly I
  101. 3:59would expect for a rice cake. So, you
  102. 4:02know, here we go. Oh, yeah. Then they're
  103. 4:04saying again reiterating quinoa, chia,
  104. 4:06and flax. Okay, 90 calories per serving,
  105. 4:09five servings in the package. They keep
  106. 4:11telling us the 90 calories. We get it.
  107. 4:13All right. 2 and 12 gram of fat with one
  108. 4:16gram of saturated fat, 16 gram of carbs
  109. 4:19with zero gram of fiber, 5 g of sugar,
  110. 4:22of which four are added sugar, and then
  111. 4:251 g of protein, and essentially zero
  112. 4:28negligible micronutrients. So, before we
  113. 4:31get to the ingredients, these nutrition
  114. 4:33facts are telling me that we once again
  115. 4:35have empty calories, mostly carbs, only
  116. 4:39a little bit of fat. That's not enough
  117. 4:41to balance those carbs. So, probably for
  118. 4:45most people, this may create a blood
  119. 4:47sugar spike and drop. Now, obviously,
  120. 4:49you're going to have to see, you know,
  121. 4:51how you feel. And based on what we're
  122. 4:52seeing here, even from these nutrition
  123. 4:55facts, it doesn't seem like there's much
  124. 4:56of the quinoa, chia, or flax in there,
  125. 4:59even though they've been telling us all
  126. 5:01about it. All right, ingredients. Rice
  127. 5:04crisp, which is made of white rice,
  128. 5:07corn, tapioca starch, corn starch,
  129. 5:10sugar, flax, whole quinoa, salt, spice,
  130. 5:14chia seeds. Then the flavored coating is
  131. 5:17made of sugar, palm kernel oil, natural
  132. 5:19flavor, salt. And then there's sunflower
  133. 5:22oil, sugar, and cinnamon. All right.
  134. 5:25[laughter]
  135. 5:26Basically, I was right. Not much of
  136. 5:30those superfood like ingredients are in
  137. 5:32there. They're relatively low on that
  138. 5:34ingredient list as far as what's in that
  139. 5:37crisp. They're mimicking the white
  140. 5:39chocolate flavor versus using the
  141. 5:41ingredient. The palm kernel oil and
  142. 5:44sunflower oil are certainly not my
  143. 5:46favorite sources of fat. For you, they
  144. 5:49may or may not be a dealbreaker. You get
  145. 5:51to decide. And the natural flavors also
  146. 5:53for some people may be a deal breaker. I
  147. 5:56like that they're using sugar. You know,
  148. 5:59I know some of you are probably
  149. 6:00listening going, "What?" But I like, you
  150. 6:03know, often times when we try not to use
  151. 6:06sugar, it ends up with 85 other
  152. 6:09ingredients or, you know, here it's not
  153. 6:11high fructose corn syrup. It's not 25
  154. 6:14other things trying to get to a sweet
  155. 6:16flavor. So anyway, there's not a ton of
  156. 6:19wild unpronouncable things in this list
  157. 6:22either. So I guess that's a pro. And I
  158. 6:26always say you have to look at the
  159. 6:27details of any flavor if you're going to
  160. 6:29try it. Curiosity killed me a little
  161. 6:32bit. So, I took a look at another
  162. 6:34flavor, the samores one, and it is a
  163. 6:37little different in the nutrition facts
  164. 6:39and the ingredients, but the takeaways
  165. 6:41are more or less the same. So, that one
  166. 6:43has some molasses powder, so we're
  167. 6:46getting into the land of more
  168. 6:48sweeteners. The ingredients are also
  169. 6:50different, but still like your quinoa,
  170. 6:53flax, and chia are not at the top of
  171. 6:55that list. I don't know. I feel like for
  172. 6:58the way they marketed all of that, I
  173. 6:59would expect them to be higher and for
  174. 7:01those ingredients to be reflected in the
  175. 7:02nutrition. Oh, and then I had to look at
  176. 7:05one more. So, it was the birthday party
  177. 7:06flavor. And this one, I love it. There's
  178. 7:09carnuba wax in this one. So, we
  179. 7:11definitely don't need that. And frankly,
  180. 7:14just depending on the flavor, we're
  181. 7:17getting empty calories, empty carbs,
  182. 7:20even if not a ton of calories, they're
  183. 7:23coming with other things that you may
  184. 7:25not want. So, with all of that said,
  185. 7:29they may serve a purpose for you. You
  186. 7:31know, they may be a better alternative
  187. 7:33to something else that you're currently
  188. 7:35having. If that's the case, I think
  189. 7:38awesome. Go with it. For me, if I were
  190. 7:41to use these, I don't know, maybe I'd
  191. 7:43use them as like a topping on something.
  192. 7:45So, if you wanted to turn your Greek
  193. 7:47yogurt or cottage cheese into something
  194. 7:50else, like you could use a couple and,
  195. 7:52you know, maybe break them up on top of
  196. 7:54that. Maybe you have a couple with some
  197. 7:56almonds or walnuts. I don't know. I
  198. 7:59personally would not make them a staple
  199. 8:01of my routine. I probably wouldn't eat a
  200. 8:04whole serving either. I don't know. I'm
  201. 8:06not sure how easy it is to stick to one
  202. 8:08serving. 21 probably feels like a lot of
  203. 8:11pieces, but then with these kinds of
  204. 8:13ingredients, I think it could be super
  205. 8:15easy to eat the whole package. I don't
  206. 8:17know. Jared Sinclair, what do you think?
  207. 8:21>> Well, I think we're on the same page. Um
  208. 8:23there's there's a couple of things. You
  209. 8:24know, I do a lot of looking at
  210. 8:27supplement facts panels for people.
  211. 8:29Obviously, you're doing the nutrition
  212. 8:31facts. Pretty much the same idea, but
  213. 8:33there are some little tricks that can be
  214. 8:34played too, Jen. You know, it's the
  215. 8:37first ingredient on that flavor
  216. 8:40cinnamon. The first ingredient was the
  217. 8:42actual Sorry, I lost it now. I The rice
  218. 8:45crisp.
  219. 8:45>> How to pull the rice crisp. Right. And
  220. 8:46it has like six or seven ingredients in
  221. 8:48it. Right.
  222. 8:48>> Exactly. Yep. And so in that you have
  223. 8:52chia and flax and quinoa. But I dare say
  224. 8:55that based on the nutrition facts panel,
  225. 8:58there's a really good chance that all
  226. 8:59three of those things would actually be
  227. 9:01a lot closer to the very bottom of the
  228. 9:02list if they weren't lumped in with the
  229. 9:04rice.
  230. 9:06Right.
  231. 9:07>> Yeah. So they come up higher on the list
  232. 9:09because they're part of the first group
  233. 9:12of part of the rice cake. Exactly.
  234. 9:14Exactly. And so that's not so great. And
  235. 9:16then I have a personal gripe, not
  236. 9:18against Drizzylicious specifically, but
  237. 9:20almost every packaged food, even the
  238. 9:22ones in health food stores. Let's get
  239. 9:24rid of the sunflower oil. My goodness,
  240. 9:27it's in everything. It's like hyolic
  241. 9:29sunflower oil and organic hyalic
  242. 9:32sunflower oil. But we just talked about
  243. 9:34how much of these seed oils we're
  244. 9:36getting versus healthier oils that we
  245. 9:39actually need. And it's time, you know,
  246. 9:41things are starting to shift. We now
  247. 9:43have chips on the market that have
  248. 9:44tallow. uh we have more things being
  249. 9:46made with butter and things like that,
  250. 9:48but I think sunflower oil needs to go
  251. 9:50away a lot more than it has.
  252. 9:51>> I'm with you. But for everybody again, I
  253. 9:53think it's also a question of like this
  254. 9:55as opposed to what.
  255. 9:56>> Right. Right. There's always this may be
  256. 9:59Exactly.
  257. 9:59>> Yeah. There's always a trade-off, right?
  258. 10:01>> Right. And this may be progress. So
  259. 10:03awesome.
  260. 10:04>> Yeah. They do look good.
  261. 10:05>> Yeah. [laughter] I mean,
  262. 10:06>> the package is appealing,
  263. 10:08>> right? Exactly. And Caitlyn says they
  264. 10:10taste delicious. So
  265. 10:11>> yeah, they probably are. Caitlyn's word
  266. 10:13is enough for you. Go for it. Let us
  267. 10:15know if you tried them.
  268. 10:16>> But I love your idea of putting it on
  269. 10:18like yogurt or cottage cheese or
  270. 10:19something like that. You know, protein
  271. 10:20it up. That makes sense. And give
  272. 10:22yourself a few of those indulgence.
  273. 10:24Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense.
  274. 10:25>> Yeah. Well, and just a reminder to
  275. 10:27everybody, you know, read the label of
  276. 10:29whatever flavor or product you have in
  277. 10:31front of you so that you know. And if
  278. 10:33you're curious about their popcorn, let
  279. 10:34me know. Or if you've tried their
  280. 10:36popcorn, let me know. All right. Well,
