- 0:00A new fire in the northwest of Quito,
- 0:03this time in Pululagua. At this moment,
- 0:06a Televistazo team is right at the
- 0:08Pululagua crater, where firefighters
- 0:10are focusing their efforts to control
- 0:12this forest fire. Diego Puente is
- 0:14accompanying these brigades at that
- 0:16location. Diego, what is the situation?
- 0:21We are at the Pululagua volcano crater,
- 0:24an inactive volcano north of Quito. The
- 0:27flames that started in the Tanlagua
- 0:29sector, also in northern Quito, in San
- 0:31Antonio de Pichincha, have advanced
- 0:33this far. We are here with Captain
- 0:36Edwin Cabrera. Captain, please inform
- 0:38us how many firefighting personnel are
- 0:41currently activated to handle this
- 0:43emergency. Good evening. Yes, we
- 0:46currently have 20 personnel from the
- 0:48fire department. We have a firefighting
- 0:51unit to protect the homes in the lower
- 0:54area. We are currently working on two
- 0:58flanks, the left and right, fighting to
- 1:01try and prevent the forest fire from
- 1:04spreading further into the surrounding
- 1:07forests and thus avoiding the
- 1:09destruction of flora and fauna. We have
- 1:14been working with two crews, performing
- 1:16monitoring, scraping, and extinguishing
- 1:18efforts to keep the fire from spreading
- 1:20further.
- 1:22Captain, what difficulties does this
- 1:23fire present? We see that it is a very
- 1:26steep slope that is currently on fire,
- 1:28which the camera is focusing on right
- 1:31now.
- 1:32Of course, we must take into account
- 1:33that the topography of the Pululagua
- 1:35volcano is very irregular. Also, with
- 1:37the night conditions, we have a lot of
- 1:40fog, which makes visibility difficult
- 1:43for the fire department personnel. But
- 1:46even so, we remain on-site, monitoring
- 1:48and preventing the fire from spreading.
- 1:52We are looking for the best conditions
- 1:54to continue fighting the fire. Likewise
- 1:57, we are going to keep personnel here
- 1:58monitoring the fire so it does not
- 2:00continue to spread. Right now, you can
- 2:04feel the wind beginning to pick up; the
- 2:06wind speed has increased, which makes
- 2:08it a very unsafe condition to work in.
- 2:12Because if we go into the forest to
- 2:15work, it could create great difficulty
- 2:18for the personnel, both for visibility
- 2:20and for having effective attack methods
- 2:23. Likewise, we have spoken with the
- 2:27homeowners and let them know that we
- 2:29are staying at the location until the
- 2:32fire is extinguished, while the fire
- 2:34department continues to work.
- 2:37It is the third consecutive night that
- 2:39firefighters have been working to
- 2:40extinguish the fire that started in the
- 2:42Tanlagua area. Uh, citizens are
- 2:46reminded not to conduct agricultural
- 2:48burns or any kind of burning, as
- 2:50conditions are favorable for forest
- 2:53fires to spread easily. This is the
- 2:56report we have so far.
- 2:58Thank you, Diego, for your report. We
- 3:00will continue to monitor the situation
- 3:02closely in that part of northwestern
- 3:04Quito, which is also a tourist area and
- 3:06a nature reserve. The flames, as we saw
- 3:08, friends, continue to spread.
- 3:12At least 250 hectares of vegetation
- 3:15have been consumed by the forest fire
- 3:17that began in Tanlagua and is now
- 3:19affecting the Pululagua Geobotanical
- 3:22Reserve in northwestern Quito. An
- 3:25update on the effects of this emergency
- 3:27with Diego Puente.
- 3:31The community organized from the early
- 3:32hours of the morning to fight the
- 3:34intense fire advancing along the slopes
- 3:35of the Tanlagua mountains. In San
- 3:37Antonio de Pichincha, north of Quito.
- 3:40This fire started Tuesday afternoon and
- 3:42is spreading rapidly. According to
- 3:45firefighters, it is the worst so far
- 3:47this dry season in Quito and has
- 3:49consumed more than 250 hectares. At 7
- 3:52a.m. this Thursday, neighbors and
- 3:54community members went up with machetes
- 3:56, shovels, and jugs of water. They
- 3:58positioned themselves on the fire line,
- 4:00wanting to prevent this blaze from
- 4:02advancing.
- 4:03It is summer, and the winds are very
- 4:05strong. And we are also requesting,
- 4:08well, the army, the police, and the
- 4:10firefighters, but we want helicopters
- 4:12to come and drop water. That is
- 4:15necessary.
- 4:16They were in groups for nearly 10 hours
- 4:18fighting the fire on seven fronts. They
- 4:21claimed they had received no help from
- 4:22the firefighters in their sectors. The
- 4:24Quito Fire Department has been fighting
- 4:26this fire since Tuesday night. Today
- 4:29their members focused on Tanlagua and
- 4:31the Pululagua crater, where there are
- 4:33active hotspots. The extent of the
- 4:35damage cannot yet be determined.
- 4:37However, uh, after the fire is
- 4:40extinguished, once we have done that,
- 4:42we will have to conduct the respective
- 4:45overflights to determine the
- 4:47approximate affected area here on site.
- 4:51The flames are advancing due to the dry
- 4:53environment and strong winds. There is
- 4:56an additional factor complicating the
- 4:58extinction: the steep slopes. According
- 5:01to the National Risk Management
- 5:03Secretariat, there are two active fires
- 5:05in Carchi, Imbabura, Pichincha, Azuay,
- 5:07and Loja.
