- 5:27to head to inverness
- 5:29really loving inverness beach it's right
- 5:32in the town of inverness and cape breton
- 5:35and we've been exploring looking for
- 5:38sea glass and beautiful rocks and
- 5:40there's so many colors to the rocks here
- 5:42and everyone i see along the beach is
- 5:45stopping to pick up rocks and shells and
- 5:48little things it's it's wonderful and
- 5:50it's a beautiful spot you could easily
- 5:52walk here for a few hours
- 5:54huge beach just stretches
- 5:56seems like for at least a couple
- 5:58kilometers it's
- 6:00wonderful one of those classic kind of
- 6:02cape breton slash
- 6:03nova scotia beaches
- 6:06wow
- 6:07there's a lot of white in there
- 6:09okay there's also some shadows
- 6:14cool
- 6:15[Music]

- 6:52east of inverness the little lake is
- 6:54situated at the bottom of beautiful
- 6:57rolling hills
- 6:59it's an iconic cape breton site
- 7:02[Music]
- 7:13the deck is on the shores of bredor lake
- 7:15and it's just an hour away from
- 7:17inverness beach or port hawkesbury
- 7:19depending on the route you take
- 7:21it's a charming town it feels like it's
- 7:24close to everything in cape breton you
- 7:26can drive just an hour to get to almost
- 7:28anywhere
- 7:29[Music]
- 7:33we stayed at the imvery resort while we
- 7:35were in town and we barely scratched the
- 7:37surface of this welcoming property the
- 7:39resort has cottages and suites the cozy
- 7:42lakeside restaurant a pool spa and lots
- 7:45of activities like kayaking and paddle
- 7:47boarding in the summer
- 7:52late september at the resort is a bit
- 7:53too cool for lake activities but there's
- 7:56still a lot to do and i'd recommend two
- 7:58or three days in town to relax enjoy the
- 8:00deck and the surrounding area
- 8:03[Music]
- 8:06a few ideas for activities include
- 8:08boating hiking golf
- 8:10and of course the alexander graham bell
- 8:13national historic site
- 8:15[Music]
- 8:20kind of scenic i would say what do you
- 8:22think is it just a little bit scenic
- 8:25[Music]
- 8:31[Music]
- 8:33the parks canada museum features
- 8:34information of a bell's life interactive
- 8:37exhibits and examples of bell's most
- 8:40interesting inventions as well as items
- 8:42from his personal collections
- 8:47the museum includes a large space
- 8:49dedicated to recreations of his
- 8:50fixed-wing aircraft and is hydrofoil the

- 9:00end of october from 9am to 5pm and

- 9:09you can also book special tours that
- 9:11give you the chance to explore artifacts
- 9:13up close and personal
- 9:24[Music]
- 9:26the beautiful town of bedeck has a
- 9:28number of hotels resorts inns and b and
- 9:31b's as well as great food and in events
- 9:35there is lots to explore they have a
- 9:36wonderful waterfront most of the
- 9:39properties all surround the water around
- 9:41the lake and on top of that i really
- 9:44have to recommend that you stop and try
- 9:46some pizza at tom's pizza on chevokto
- 9:49street
- 9:50they have the most incredible little
- 9:53pizza shop the best staff and it was one
- 9:56of the highlights of of going through
- 9:58town i have to say
- 10:03[Music]
- 10:12look at that view
- 10:14look at the waves and the rocks
- 10:18nature at its finest
- 10:22stopping the town of shetty camp heading
- 10:24up the coast along the cabot trail we
- 10:26really enjoyed the gabrielle restaurant
- 10:28for some truly perfect french maritime
- 10:31food
- 10:32not far away is the petit atang beach
- 10:35driving north along highway 30 it's a
- 10:37pristine stretch of rocky beach to take
- 10:39a walk and breathe in the fresh ocean
- 10:42air
- 10:46so we're on a beach near shetty camp
- 10:50and
- 10:51it is
- 10:52so so beautiful it's just rugged nature
- 10:57right by what i can only call the
- 10:59mountains along the cabot trail
- 11:02just look at it it's it's
- 11:04it's a great spot it's about
- 11:07maybe 10 minute drive from shed a camp
- 11:10just along the
- 11:11ocean and
- 11:12there's just spots to park along the
- 11:14side of the road and
- 11:16it's wonderful
- 11:18i i highly recommend the drive of course
- 11:22so yeah this is
- 11:24this is our beach right now there's only
- 11:26two i think maybe three other people on
- 11:28the whole beach we're driving from
- 11:31the invaria resort in the deck
- 11:33and so from the deck to shedding camp
- 11:35was about an hour
- 11:37and then our next drive from
- 11:39sheta camp on to the celtic lodge that's
- 11:43about another hour an hour and 15 or so
- 11:45depending on traffic and
- 11:48things like that there's a little
- 11:50traffic but it is amazing how few cars
- 11:52are right now we're we're here in the
- 11:54middle
- 11:55of the end of september
- 11:57um and yeah
- 11:59i could spend a lot longer here uh a
- 12:01week
- 12:02we're only here in cape breton for a
- 12:04week and i kind of wish we had more time
- 12:07but just
- 12:09anytime you can get here
- 12:11cap a trail
- 12:12i mean there's tons of other places in
- 12:14cape breton to explore but the cabot
- 12:16trail is astonishing it is
- 12:19just like nowhere else in canada
- 12:21nova scotia has tons of beaches all
- 12:23around the the whole province but i kind
- 12:26of love these ones just because they're
- 12:28so rugged
- 12:29beautiful
- 12:30majestic
- 12:32and then the hills
- 12:34or mountains i would even say
- 12:37really make make the whole atmosphere
- 12:39here
- 12:40and of course you can buy seafood
- 12:42everywhere there is
- 12:44lobster crab
- 12:46scallops all sorts of stuff fish of
- 12:48course
- 12:49pretty much everywhere you stop sells
- 12:51amazing seafood so
- 12:53for seafood lovers it's it's kind of a
- 12:54must
- 12:56off we go
- 12:58[Music]
- 13:32wow nearby you'll also find the oh coin
- 13:35bakery with lots of treats from cookies
- 13:36and pies to cinnamon buns
- 13:40from there it's a short drive to the
- 13:41western entrance of the cape breton
- 13:43highlands national park one of the most
- 13:46incredible drives i have ever taken in
- 13:48my life
- 13:49the drive through the park along the
- 13:50cabot trail is dotted with places to
- 13:52stop and take in the epic views as well
- 13:55as hiking trails and a few small towns
- 13:58it is like nowhere else in canada
- 14:04the parks canada site is over 949
- 14:08square kilometers and 2022 rates are
- 14:10under 20 dollars for family or group of
- 14:13less than seven people in one vehicle
- 14:15from the western entrance to the eastern
- 14:17exit the drive is around an hour and 40
- 14:19minutes and there are a few places you
- 14:21can stay the night from may to october
- 14:28[Music]
- 14:36for our trip we booked two nights at the
- 14:38celtic lodge and it's a short drive to
- 14:40everything on the eastern side of the
- 14:42cabin trail in the park it's near
- 14:44inganish
- 14:47[Music]
- 14:52the award-winning hotel has an
- 14:54incredible golf course and it's open
- 14:56throughout most of the year although it
- 14:58does close for some parts of winter and
- 15:00early spring
- 15:02there are a number of room options
- 15:03throughout the property including this
- 15:04junior suite in the main lodge
- 15:10the hotel's a spa host events and
- 15:12corporate events as well as two
- 15:14restaurants the purple thistle dining
- 15:16room where we had dinner as well as
- 15:18breakfast and the highland sitting room
- 15:20which has more of a bar atmosphere
- 15:24the purple thistle recently earned the
- 15:26wine spectators award of excellence and
- 15:28they have a distinct focus on local
- 15:30ingredients and dishes
- 15:38inganish in the area around the hotel
- 15:40have a lot of great beaches there's
- 15:42hiking trails in the highlands national
- 15:44park and the shops and quaint towns to
- 15:46explore nearby
- 15:47it's a great spot to soak up nature and
- 15:50enjoy the great outdoors for a few days
- 15:54what a view
- 16:04for fantastic meals
- 16:06morrison's restaurant was one of my
- 16:09favorite restaurants at cape breton and
- 16:11it's worth a stop for burgers
- 16:13hospitality and desserts
- 16:16they get five stars for me
- 16:26exploring black brook cove beach was
- 16:28another must visit spot for us
- 16:32[Music]
- 16:34but look at this beach
- 16:36holy
- 16:39[Applause]
- 16:42so we've been exploring beaches the
- 16:44whole trip kind of
- 16:45but uh
- 16:47oh my god there's a waterfall
- 16:51[Applause]
- 16:52this is a beautiful beach
- 16:54rugged obviously not not the kind of
- 16:56place you're going to be swimming but uh
- 16:59wonderful place to explore
- 17:01wow
- 17:03so yeah we follow this trail along here
- 17:07and go through the middle of the woods
- 17:09to come out the beach
- 17:12but look at these waves
- 17:18the view
- 17:20and also we found all sorts of lobster
- 17:22traps
- 17:25like i think half the driftwood here
- 17:28is broken up lobster traps it's
- 17:30fascinating
- 17:37[Music]
- 17:43so today we're supposed to be over at
- 17:46the skyline trail in
- 17:49highland national park
- 17:51and the plan had been that we were going
- 17:53to take
- 17:54a hike up the skyline trail and then
- 17:57at the top that i had permission to fly
- 17:59my drone and get some footage you know
- 18:01coming in and out over the trail and
- 18:03it's one of the most beautiful spots in
- 18:06cape breton there are lots of beautiful
- 18:08spots but it is one of the best for sure
- 18:11and the plans look good and then today
- 18:15it was rain rain rain rain all day
- 18:18and of course now it's actually gone
- 18:20sunny but
- 18:21the time i talked to the ranger and we
- 18:24decided it was just too too wet over
- 18:26there and i mean to be honest the east
- 18:28side of cape breton can be very
- 18:30different at the north than the west
- 18:32side there can be rain there and not
- 18:34here and that was the forecast for the
- 18:36day so anyway i'm i'm a little
- 18:38disappointed because we now have no time
- 18:40to do it but we're making the best of it
- 18:42like we we wouldn't have gotten to this
- 18:45beach today and spent like over an hour
- 18:48here if it wasn't for the fact that we
- 18:50we had the time to do it so on the
- 18:52bright side this side of the island is
- 18:54nice and we're we're making the best of
- 18:56it and then we're gonna head back to
- 18:57celtic lodge and we'll have some time
- 18:59there
- 19:02middle head trail was easily one of our
- 19:04favorite hikes in cape breton
- 19:06it's around the corner from the celtic
- 19:08lodge and it's two kilometers in and two
- 19:10kilometers out
- 19:12it's a slightly longer walk but most of
- 19:14the trail is very level and easy with
- 19:16completely stunning views of the ocean
- 19:19along a trail that goes right through
- 19:20the forest
- 19:32so we're walking the middle head trail
- 19:34today
- 19:35it's our last jaunt in the area we're
- 19:37supposed to take a boat cruise today
- 19:38didn't happen because of the weather but
- 19:40it actually is nice weather for hiking i
- 19:42mean it's nice and cool it's a little
- 19:44rainy that's okay the middle head is
- 19:47right beside celtic lodge so it's in
- 19:49inganish
- 19:50and uh it's really only about an hour
- 19:53and a half walk maybe two hours if
- 19:55you're taking it easy
- 19:57and it's really easy there's only a
- 19:59couple spots that are a bit rugged and a
- 20:00few ups and downs but otherwise
- 20:03like these are the views here
- 20:05it's astonishing i
- 20:08i i highly recommend it it's a quick
- 20:11drive in at the end
- 20:12of the northeast side of the park of the
- 20:16national park here parks canada
- 20:19and uh
- 20:20it's an easy drive in
- 20:22and look at what you get rewarded with
- 20:24so
- 20:25we might try one more trail today
- 20:27uh since we didn't get a lot of time in
- 20:29for trails yet but
- 20:30then we're heading down to sydney but
- 20:32check this out
- 20:40all the way to the end of the trail
- 20:43and
- 20:44the views are well worth the two
- 20:46kilometer hike
- 20:48uh i'm really impressed it's uh it's so
- 20:50it's four kilometers total i lied the
- 20:52first time it's not two kilometers
- 20:54around trip but uh wow just have to be
- 20:57careful around the edges but there's
- 20:58lots of space
- 21:00but uh yeah you don't want to go too far
- 21:02but
- 21:04wow and i think actually
- 21:06a sunny day would be beautiful here too
- 21:08but
- 21:08the rainy day really brings out
- 21:11i don't know the real nature of the area
- 21:13it's beautiful
- 21:21leaving the cape breton highlands was a
- 21:23sad day for us but we drove to sydney
- 21:25which is about a two hour drive through
- 21:27a number of small towns and villages
- 21:29along the eastern coast of cape breton
- 21:33in sydney we especially enjoyed our meal
- 21:35at the governor's pub and eatery it's a
- 21:37must visit restaurant pub in the city
- 21:39with live music and a lot of great beer
- 21:41on tap
- 21:43[Music]
- 21:48while we're in town we stayed on the
- 21:49member 2 reserve at a local hotel and
- 21:52stopped at the member 2 heritage park
- 21:53indigenous center to learn about the
- 21:55migmaw history of the area important
- 21:57people like grand chief member 2 and
- 22:00their traditions
- 22:06the center also has art and souvenirs
- 22:08for sale from local and national artists
- 22:14[Music]
- 22:24we also took a stroll along the sydney
- 22:26harbour which is around the corner from
- 22:28the center of town
- 22:29and of course we had to stop and see a
- 22:31real
- 22:32cape breton icon we're headed out of
- 22:34sydney today we leave cape breton which
- 22:37we're quite sad about but on our way out
- 22:40of sydney we had to stop of course and
- 22:42see the big fiddle and it is amazing
- 22:45it's humongous uh and yes it has real
- 22:48strings the bow is properly strung and
- 22:51everything uh and it plays music so yeah
- 22:55you have to come see the big fiddle if
- 22:56you're anywhere nearby and there's a
- 22:59beautiful walkway along the waterfront
- 23:01you can go visit and right nearby over
- 23:04that way is a pub that you have to try
- 23:06called governors it's been there for
- 23:09a long time a very long time we went
- 23:11last night and the food is amazing but
- 23:14and oh there's also a shop inside so you
- 23:16can go shop the big fiddle i i think
- 23:18they have music related stuff we're
- 23:19gonna head in and check that out next so
- 23:22come see the big fiddle you have to see
- 23:24it
- 23:26[Music]
- 23:43today we're at the fortress of louisburg
- 23:45which is just
- 23:46right near sydney
- 23:48sydney and cape breton so basically it's
- 23:50a 40-minute drive from the city
- 23:52and the center is astonishing
- 23:55uh the history here it's it's a really
- 23:59old site but what they've done is
- 24:01they've actually rebuilt it so when it
- 24:03was taken over by the english a long
- 24:05time ago they completely destroyed the
- 24:08area
- 24:09but all the plans and everything were
- 24:11still around for this
- 24:13all the buildings here so it was rebuilt
- 24:17i mean there's no place like it that
- 24:19i've seen uh
- 24:21just the amount of history here and the
- 24:23size of the village that they've rebuilt
- 24:26seeing just
- 24:28i mean what went into rebuilding this
- 24:30place like an entire village it's it's
- 24:34amazing it's worth every minute you are
- 24:36going to want to spend hours here it's
- 24:38it's well worth the visit they've also
- 24:40got some amazing food
- 24:42and a bar so
- 24:44yeah
- 24:45very cool to check out for an afternoon
- 24:47welcome to the fortress of louisville
- 24:49the year is 1744.
- 24:51uh and i want you to imagine there are
- 24:54hundreds of fishing proprietors homes
- 24:56that line the harbor here
- 24:57we are exporting over 15 million pounds
- 25:00of salted dried cod every year out of
- 25:02these waters
- 25:04um we're feeding france and our french
- 25:06colonies
- 25:07so right now in france we're about 19
- 25:09million people we're predominantly
- 25:11catholic and our religious calendar
- 25:12tells us there's about 150 days of the
- 25:14year we're not allowed to eat meat
- 25:16this is why the cod fish is important
- 25:18for france
- 25:20so when king louis xiv finds out how
- 25:22much cod is coming out of the water here
- 25:23he says build a fortress around that
- 25:25fishing town
- 25:26and that's exactly what we did
- 25:28if it wasn't for the cod fish here the
- 25:31fortress would not have been built here
- 25:34a lot of the times people don't realize
- 25:35because we're not taught a lot about
- 25:37what happened here in louisville um and
- 25:39it was really the key to the continent
- 25:41a lot of the times we start our
- 25:43schooling at the uh plains of abraham
- 25:46with wolf and moncom and really uh it
- 25:48was wolf who who ultimately took this
- 25:50fortress from the french in 1758
- 25:53and i'm sure that gave him the
- 25:55confidence to keep going down to quebec
- 25:57uh and i know talking a lot of uh people
- 26:00from quebec uh they don't know that
- 26:02that we're not taught that
- 26:04in school so when they find this out
- 26:06there's a big aha moment going okay
- 26:09now i understand what happened
- 26:12[Music]
- 26:16the fortress has a lot of history to
- 26:18share from the french settlers english
- 26:20invaders and the indigenous history at
- 26:23the miegma interpretive center
- 26:24[Music]
- 26:32the fortress doesn't feel like it was
- 26:34rebuilt either it feels like you've
- 26:36stepped back in time and around the
- 26:38large site you'll find numerous
- 26:40interpreters who helped share the
- 26:42stories of the people who lived and
- 26:43worked at blueberg all the way from the
- 26:45leaders down to the soldiers
- 26:48and those art fully furnished houses and
- 26:50artifacts recovered from in and around
- 26:52the area there's also livestock and
- 26:55activities
- 26:56[Music]
- 26:59and when you're done exploring you can
- 27:00buy a meal sample some beer and pick out
- 27:03a few gifts to take home
- 27:06[Music]
- 27:17around the corner from the fortress you
- 27:19can also stop at wolf's landing this is
- 27:21the beach where james wolf landed on
- 27:23june 8th 1758 before he sieged louisburg
- 27:27and then went on to attack quebec city
- 27:31aside from the history it's a beautiful
- 27:33untouched little beach and it's worth a
- 27:35stop if you have a little time after
- 27:38fortress louisburg
- 27:43and on the other side of town
- 27:45bloomberg also has the louisburg
- 27:48lighthouse the original lighthouse is
- 27:50long gone but it was the first
- 27:51lighthouse built in canada and the
- 27:53current lighthouse is at the tip of some
- 27:56stunning hiking trails along the coast
- 27:59[Music]
- 28:11leaving cape breton we took the
- 28:12transcanada highway back to the mainland
- 28:15but at antigonish for something
- 28:16different we got off on highway 7 for a
- 28:19slightly longer route back to halifax
- 28:22along the route we saw some of the
- 28:23eastern shore between sherbrooke and
- 28:25halifax and stopped at la shiel lake
- 28:28provincial park
- 28:32[Music]
- 28:41so we got off the highway and decided to
- 28:43take a side route back from
- 28:46cape breton to halifax and we're taking
- 28:48the basically the old highway down along
- 28:51the eastern shore
- 28:53and we stopped here at la shiel
- 28:55provincial park
- 28:57and it is
- 28:58a wonderful break uh it is beautiful you
- 29:01can see that the trees are starting to
- 29:03change here too and still a little ways
- 29:06from being you know full on color but
- 29:08it's a wonderful little spot along the
- 29:10drive uh we got about 200 kilometers
- 29:13left and i love that they even got like
- 29:16a bench here on the side of the
- 29:18lake it's uh
- 29:20my kind of pace right now
- 29:23[Music]
- 29:32in halifax we returned to the hall
- 29:34burton house inn for our last two nights
- 29:36in nova scotia and this time we had a
- 29:39cozy suite with two beds
- 29:49back at the halifax citadel returned for
- 29:52their spooky evening ghost tours
- 29:55and it's a perfect chance to learn about
- 29:57some bloody history in parts of the city
- 30:00that you normally don't get to explore
- 30:03here and they rush over and investigate
- 30:05because what it is that he saw was a
- 30:07woman lying face down in the grass
- 30:10wearing a tattered gray dress
- 30:13and as they get closer walking with
- 30:15lanterns interpreters will tell you
- 30:17stories about strange incidents that
- 30:19can't quite be explained
- 30:22but as they get closer and they start to
- 30:24turn her over they realize that it was
- 30:26not the fall that killed her
- 30:28[Music]
- 30:36for our last full day we started off
- 30:37with the trip to a historic island off
- 30:40the shores of halifax
- 30:43george's island is open from june to
- 30:45october and you can tour the island on
- 30:48weekends and some fridays in the peak of
- 30:50summer with ferry rides via murphy's on
- 30:53the water
- 31:20we're on george's island which is just
- 31:22off
- 31:23basically off the coast of halifax just
- 31:25off the edge of it here it's only like a
- 31:28five-minute ferry ride to get here
- 31:30and uh you get the real
- 31:33history of the fortress that was here
- 31:35that's connected to the citadel uh and
- 31:38so basically it was like a tag team on
- 31:41protecting the harbor back in the day a
- 31:44long time ago very interesting lots of
- 31:47good history and you can walk through
- 31:48the tunnels on a tour if you come
- 31:50the right
- 31:59okay time
- 32:00this is what's known as a 10 inch rml
- 32:05muscle leather this is basically the
- 32:08main artillery
- 32:15[Music]
- 32:22once again to parks canada for
- 32:25all the lovely hospitality this is the
- 32:28the third site i think we've been to
- 32:30i've been to the citadel twice here in
- 32:32halifax so it's been a fantastic trip to
- 32:35explore the history of the area
- 32:42afterwards we strolled downtown halifax
- 32:45for the rest of the day
- 32:46the city has some incredible
- 32:48architecture both new and old
- 32:50as well as some great shops restaurants
- 32:52and bars
- 33:03do
- 33:10[Music]
- 33:18we had lunch at the old triangle on
- 33:20prince street i enjoyed some more local
- 33:22beer while my wife had a martini and we
- 33:25tried a few local favorites from the
- 33:26menu
- 33:28[Music]
- 33:35[Music]
- 33:41[Music]
- 33:46then we took a walk along one of
- 33:48canada's best harbor fronts where you
- 33:50can often find festivals on the weekend
- 33:53and we took some time to check out the
- 33:55maritime museum of the atlantic
- 34:12[Music]
- 34:26the maritime museum features boats and
- 34:28history including artifacts and replicas
- 34:31from the titanic
- 34:47[Music]
- 34:57is
- 35:04there's also a detailed look at the
- 35:06halifax harbor disaster that devastated
- 35:09the city in 1917
- 35:11including a watch that stopped when the
- 35:14explosion happened at 9 04 am
- 35:26after that we took our daughter to check
- 35:28out science and fun activities at the
- 35:30discovery center where you can explore
- 35:32sea life learn about ocean currents a
- 35:35lot more across three floors packed with
- 35:38things to see
- 35:39explore and do for toddlers kids and
- 35:43even parents
- 36:09back at the halifax harbor walk we
- 36:11checked out some of the shops and food
- 36:13we picked up a few souvenirs and we said
- 36:16goodbye to the city
- 36:35[Music]
- 36:53and that's it for our nova scotia
- 36:55adventure we've uh been all the way up
- 36:58to the top of of cape breton and

- 37:07so many incredible places uh you know
- 37:10you could easily spend two weeks in cape
- 37:13breton we spent a week and we kind of
- 37:15did a lot but i don't think we really
- 37:17quite scratched the surface
- 37:20and then halifax we barely had enough

- 37:42all a surprise getting there
- 37:44and just so quaint and
- 37:46it wasn't the tourist
- 37:48trap that you kind of worry about at
- 37:50some destinations it was nothing like
- 37:52that it was just such a beautiful spot
- 37:54and just so many little things to do and
- 37:56places to hike and
- 37:58wonderful and then
- 38:00that first hour driving through the
- 38:01cabot trail once you enter parks canada
- 38:04past
- 38:05cheda camp that first part of the loop
