13. 0:34jewish mafia of the 30s and 40s with
14. 0:36meyer lansky and bugsy siegel
15. 0:38only instead of using a tommy gun madoff
16. 0:40used a pen
17. 0:42a computer and a set of golf clubs to
18. 0:44lure in his victims
19. 0:45this was very much an undercover
20. 0:47operation if our bosses found out we
21. 0:49would have been told to stop the
22. 0:50investigation
23. 0:51and if we had kept going it would have
24. 0:53been undue career risk
25. 0:55but the more important thing was the
26. 0:56personal safety risk we feared for our
27. 0:58lives we feared for our families lives
28. 1:00i carried a gun wherever i went i
29. 1:02checked beneath my vehicle for bombs
30. 1:04before i would get in it
31. 1:05i had to grow eyes in the back of my
32. 1:07head in order to get the other side of
33. 1:09this case
34. 1:09each time i went to the government i
35. 1:11took on increasing risks
36. 1:13i couldn't afford to let them know that
37. 1:14i had a team in the field they thought i
38. 1:16was acting alone
39. 1:17i did that to protect my team and their
40. 1:19families we were four men
41. 1:20of different faiths but one common
42. 1:22belief that madoff had to be stopped
43. 1:24and unfortunately we were the last line
44. 1:26of defense between madoff and his
45. 1:28victims
46. 1:28because the sec wasn't dysfunctional
47. 1:31they were non-functional
48. 1:33and they didn't care if the sec had
49. 1:35listened to us in 2000
50. 1:36we would have stopped madoff at well
51. 1:38under 10 billion dollars that he got to
52. 1:4065 billion dollars
53. 1:41is a tragedy of epic proportion we found
54. 1:43ourselves up against a small army and an
55. 1:45army kept increasing in size
56. 1:47at the end madoff had over 339 different
57. 1:50fund of funds feeding him new victims
58. 1:52over 59 different management companies
59. 1:54were involved in over 40 nations
60. 1:56in 2005 the sec finally listened and
61. 1:58they opened an investigation
62. 2:00but their investigation was off course
63. 2:02on day one and i immediately feared for
64. 2:04my life
65. 2:05it reads like fiction but it's a true
66. 2:07story it really happened to us
