  1. 0:00don't believe everything you see on a
  2. 0:01product that you're buying because we're
  3. 0:02being exposed to really toxic chemicals
  4. 0:05that we know cause harm okay so I've got
  5. 0:07everyday products that we're all using
  6. 0:09is this good no what about this
  7. 0:11absolutely not is this a good one yes
  8. 0:13this throw that out good bad there are
  9. 0:15so many issues with that this perfect
  10. 0:17what about this this is one of the worst
  11. 0:20products that you can use I've been
  12. 0:22using it every day get rid of them
  13. 0:24goodbye Dr Ivon burkart is a
  14. 0:26toxicologist whose groundbreaking
  15. 0:28research has unveiled the shock truth
  16. 0:30about the hidden risks of toxins found
  17. 0:32in everyday products and what we can do
  18. 0:34about it we don't know what we're
  19. 0:36exposing ourselves to because by law in
  20. 0:38Europe and in the US manufacturers do
  21. 0:40not have to disclose certain ingredients
  22. 0:42but we finally have proof that there are
  23. 0:44links to increased rates of cancer
  24. 0:45infertility obesity we know that a
  25. 0:48surface scratch on a non-stick piece of
  26. 0:49cookware can release 9,000 particles
  27. 0:52into your food and those microplastics
  28. 0:54have been found in lungs heart brain
  29. 0:56penis there's microplastics in my penis
  30. 0:59yes and scientists have found that
  31. 1:01eventually we will become more plastic
  32. 1:02than we are humans if we continue at
  33. 1:04this rate you seem really pissed off
  34. 1:05about this I'm really angry that people
  35. 1:07have to suffer I mean these chemicals
  36. 1:09are causing children they have cognitive
  37. 1:11delays they start having behavioral
  38. 1:12issues and I think it brings up a lot of
  39. 1:15emotions for me because I've been
  40. 1:16personally impacted but I
  41. 1:18think of how many millions of people
  42. 1:20around the world are struggling and
  43. 1:23don't know why so what are the most
  44. 1:25important things that we can do to have
  45. 1:27the biggest impact number one
  46. 1:32this has always blown my mind a little
  47. 1:34bit 53% of you that listen to the show
  48. 1:36regularly haven't yet subscribed to the
  49. 1:38show so could I ask you for a favor
  50. 1:40before we start if you like the show and
  51. 1:42you like what we do here and you want to
  52. 1:43support us the free simple way that you
  53. 1:45can do just that is by hitting the
  54. 1:46Subscribe button and my commitment to
  55. 1:48you is if you do that then I'll do
  56. 1:50everything in my power me and my team to
  57. 1:51make sure that this show is better for
  58. 1:53you every single week we'll listen to
  59. 1:55your feedback we'll find the guests that
  60. 1:57you want me to speak to and we'll
  61. 1:58continue to do what we do thank you so
  62. 2:03much Dr yon
  63. 2:05burkart I've consumed a lot of your
  64. 2:07content I've seen your videos I've read
  65. 2:10a ton of your work just to start if you
  66. 2:14had to sort of encapsulate the warning
  67. 2:17that you're communicating to people into
  68. 2:18a sentence what would that warning
  69. 2:21be don't believe everything you see on a
  70. 2:24container a bottle or a product that
  71. 2:26you're buying why what's the consequence
  72. 2:30is that if you're believing in the
  73. 2:31marketing and what you see on the front
  74. 2:32of the label instead of actually reading
  75. 2:34the ingredients you could be exposing
  76. 2:36yourself to toxins that you probably
  77. 2:39don't want to be and what's what mission
  78. 2:41are you on yon well I'm on a mission to
  79. 2:45empower people
  80. 2:48to avoid environmental toxins so they
  81. 2:51can protect their families and really
  82. 2:54using science and evidence to make
  83. 2:56informed decisions that affect their
  84. 2:58health and what is the the macro picture
  85. 3:00here when you think about the world
  86. 3:02we're living in and how exposed we are
  87. 3:03to toxins do you think people are at all
  88. 3:06aware of the toxins that we're consuming
  89. 3:09every day I think now people are
  90. 3:11becoming more aware but there are new
  91. 3:13toxins that are emerging every day and
  92. 3:15it's simply a consequence of how the
  93. 3:18system is set up and it's mainly because
  94. 3:22chemicals and products are not required
  95. 3:24to be tested for safety before they're
  96. 3:26released onto the market at least in the
  97. 3:28US and many other regions of the
  98. 3:32world and so what happens is people are
  99. 3:36buying these products and we're being
  100. 3:38exposed to chemicals that we have no
  101. 3:40idea how they are actually impacting our
  102. 3:42health if they're harmful or not and
  103. 3:45we're basically guinea pigs in a massive
  104. 3:47human experiment that no one signed up
  105. 3:48for that we didn't consent to and what's
  106. 3:51the risk well the risk is that we go
  107. 3:54about our daily lives not knowing what
  108. 3:56we're consuming or being exposed to and
  109. 3:58then later on in life
  110. 4:00unfortunately fall ill and suffer from
  111. 4:03some chronic
  112. 4:04disease are there particular illnesses
  113. 4:06that are most closely associated with
  114. 4:09toxins in our environment and toxins
  115. 4:11that we're consuming every day yes so
  116. 4:13cancer is probably one of the most clear
  117. 4:16associations as well as
  118. 4:18infertility and more widely known are
  119. 4:22issues like not being able to conceive
  120. 4:26having a decrease in sperm count sperm
  121. 4:28quality and the fact that sperm count
  122. 4:31has declined by 50% in the last 50 years
  123. 4:34is pretty
  124. 4:36alarming and who are
  125. 4:38you I'm a toxicologist but I'm also a
  126. 4:41mom what's a toxicologist so I study the
  127. 4:44basic science of poisons how do
  128. 4:47chemicals interact with the cells in our
  129. 4:48bodies and how do they cause harm but
  130. 4:51not only that how do our cells defend
  131. 4:53themselves against these toxins why did
  132. 4:56you choose to do
  133. 4:58toxicology you know you could have done
  134. 5:00anything with your life you could have
  135. 5:02pursued anything I found it by
  136. 5:05accident was it really an accident
  137. 5:07though I don't know I think I was led
  138. 5:09there I think I've always been
  139. 5:10interested I think I think I was
  140. 5:12meant to share
  141. 5:17this and I think it brings up
  142. 5:20um a lot of emotions for me because I've
  143. 5:23been personally impacted but I
  144. 5:26think of how many millions of people
  145. 5:28around the world are are struggling and
  146. 5:30don't know why and so if I can bring
  147. 5:33awareness to
  148. 5:34that then I feel like my mission is
  149. 5:36complete but I studied toxicology
  150. 5:39because just in my body I knew that
  151. 5:43something was a Miss we need to study
  152. 5:46this environment around us we need to be
  153. 5:49more aware and more conscious of what
  154. 5:50we're doing and when I was in undergrad
  155. 5:53and I discovered toxicology I was living
  156. 5:56the absolute conventional lifestyle and
  157. 5:59sick all the time and wondering why and
  158. 6:01just thinking that it was normal and I
  159. 6:02Shrugged it off and it wasn't normal and
  160. 6:04I reversed
  161. 6:06it it's so personal for you isn't it it
  162. 6:09is
  163. 6:10absolutely
  164. 6:12why not only because I've been
  165. 6:14personally impacted
  166. 6:17but I want my children
  167. 6:19to to have the best version of
  168. 6:23me so I can look after them and so that
  169. 6:26I don't have to worry about them having
  170. 6:28some of the problem that I
  171. 6:34had and you scared about that I'm
  172. 6:37concerned and I take action on it every
  173. 6:39single day I think about it all the time
  174. 6:43but not in not in a a scared way just
  175. 6:46what else can I
  176. 6:48do what else can I research what else
  177. 6:50can I learn how else can I implement
  178. 6:52this and how else can I share this so
  179. 6:53that other people can implement it
  180. 6:56because there's so much going on in the
  181. 6:57scientific Community about these talks
  182. 6:59chemicals that the general public
  183. 7:01doesn't
  184. 7:03know and we all have a right to
  185. 7:06know we got any tissues
  186. 7:10Joe thank
  187. 7:13you didn't expect to
  188. 7:16cry yeah I mean I mean I can understand
  189. 7:18but it's it's Illuminating because it
  190. 7:20really shows why you're doing what
  191. 7:21you're doing and how much it means to
  192. 7:22you which I think is really important um
  193. 7:27and it makes it makes a lot lot of
  194. 7:28things make sense frankly but also you
  195. 7:30know I haven't had kids yet so I don't
  196. 7:31have that lens that I guess comes with
  197. 7:34being a parent and that concern of I
  198. 7:36think about myself and I'm fairly young
  199. 7:38so but but I can imagine in a world
  200. 7:40where I had kids I'd become Ultra
  201. 7:42cautious and ultra um thoughtful yeah
  202. 7:45especially coming from where I came from
  203. 7:47where I had those problems and just to
  204. 7:49think if I can prevent that in my
  205. 7:52children and and help people prevent
  206. 7:54that in their children then that's the
  207. 7:56best outcome for
  208. 7:57everyone I actually did never pay
  209. 8:00attention to toxins before I studied
  210. 8:03toxicology I was in the lab I was
  211. 8:05looking at really toxic chemicals
  212. 8:06chemicals that we know cause harm and
  213. 8:08cause cancer but as I went on with my
  214. 8:11life I started to face more and more
  215. 8:13increasing health issues increasing in
  216. 8:15severity until I was faced with
  217. 8:17fertility challenges and I was unable
  218. 8:20and unwilling to accept at the time
  219. 8:23that IVF or inital fertilization would
  220. 8:26be my only option if I wanted to have a
  221. 8:27family and I was unwilling to accept
  222. 8:29that because I said wait a second I know
  223. 8:32that there's an environmental component
  224. 8:33to this there's chemicals in our
  225. 8:35environment that are impacting my
  226. 8:36fertility that's what I studied in the
  227. 8:38lab I studied fertility and can cancer
  228. 8:42so it was quite shocking to me that I
  229. 8:44actually started to struggle with some
  230. 8:46of these conditions but no one could
  231. 8:49give me answers and what was missing
  232. 8:51from my view at the time was these lowd
  233. 8:54dose chronic exposures over a lifetime
  234. 8:57to toxins and chemicals
  235. 8:59in our products in our homes in our
  236. 9:02outside world that nobody really has
  237. 9:06connected to some of these disease
  238. 9:08States and so it wasn't until I embarked
  239. 9:11on a journey of self-discovery and
  240. 9:13research that I started to uncover the
  241. 9:16linkages between these lowdose
  242. 9:18environmental chemicals and products
  243. 9:19that we're using all the time and how
  244. 9:21they impacted my health and when I
  245. 9:23started to remove them and replace them
  246. 9:25with safer options my health returned my
  247. 9:28health recovered and I was actually able
  248. 9:30to conceive my own children without
  249. 9:33assistance how old were you when you
  250. 9:35were first told that IVF was the only
  251. 9:37route I was 32 okay and you'd had tests
  252. 9:41done and stuff and at that time to see
  253. 9:44if you were your foot sort of fertility
  254. 9:46levels and things like that right I was
  255. 9:48actually not having a cycle at that
  256. 9:50point for nine months you didn't have a
  257. 9:52period at all I didn't have a period so
  258. 9:53that is quite striking because as a
  259. 9:55person in their 30s people don't go
  260. 9:58through menopause and have you know a
  261. 10:00lack of a period until sometimes 50
  262. 10:02years old that's almost 20 years earlier
  263. 10:06than that that was really shocking to me
  264. 10:08something was clearly wrong my body was
  265. 10:10screaming for help and I had no other
  266. 10:13option but to take matters into my own
  267. 10:16hands as a toxicologist someone who's
  268. 10:19trained and done the
  269. 10:20research when you were told that you
  270. 10:24know IVF is the only route what did they
  271. 10:27say was the the problem
  272. 10:29because if someone's telling you that
  273. 10:30IVF is only rot presumably they're
  274. 10:32saying that you're maybe implying
  275. 10:34between the lines that you're broken in
  276. 10:35some way or that it's normal not to have
  277. 10:38a period at 32 like what were they what
  278. 10:42was the what does the system tell you is
  279. 10:43the problem with
  280. 10:45you that's the issue is that they didn't
  281. 10:48they had no answers they couldn't tell
  282. 10:49me what the issues were they said oh you
  283. 10:51look normal in tests but if you're
  284. 10:54unable to get pregnant on your own well
  285. 10:56the other option is ibf or adopt
  286. 11:00and as a toxicologist was there anything
  287. 11:02that you needed to relearn or reand
  288. 11:04based on your training that you've
  289. 11:06discovered wasn't true I had to relearn
  290. 11:09almost everything because as a scientist
  291. 11:12I was trained as a toxicologist day one
  292. 11:15to follow the path that and the belief
  293. 11:18that the dose makes a poison that the
  294. 11:20more you're exposed to a chemical the
  295. 11:22more severe the outcome and that's not
  296. 11:25always true because as we know now there
  297. 11:27are chemicals in the environment
  298. 11:29known as endocrine disruptors at very
  299. 11:32low levels have higher activity than
  300. 11:34they do at hide levels so it's
  301. 11:36completely backwards so I had to relearn
  302. 11:39everything that I had learned as a
  303. 11:41student in order to recover and in fact
  304. 11:44I was so resistant and so hesitant to go
  305. 11:47outside of what I
  306. 11:49knew that actually helped uh kept me
  307. 11:52stuck for much longer than I needed to
  308. 11:54be did you say with endocrine disruptors
  309. 11:56that sometimes lower doses are worse
  310. 11:58than high doses exactly how can that be
  311. 12:00possible they're called non-monotonic
  312. 12:02dose responses that's a technical term
  313. 12:03for it but it's basically because the
  314. 12:06hormones in our bodies are present and
  315. 12:07active at such extraordinarily tiny
  316. 12:10amounts that any amount of excess or
  317. 12:14chemicals coming from the environment
  318. 12:16could trigger those same Pathways could
  319. 12:18be devastating on a cellular
  320. 12:21level and when you think about the
  321. 12:23products that we use daytoday whether
  322. 12:25they're beauty products or you know
  323. 12:27might be a frying pan or a SP plastic
  324. 12:29spatula or anything how many of these
  325. 12:31sort of day-to-day consumer products
  326. 12:33have toxic chemicals in them or at least
  327. 12:36one toxic chemical almost
  328. 12:40everything and it might shock you to
  329. 12:41think that is almost everything but
  330. 12:43unfortunately it is it's because our
  331. 12:46world now is overcome with plastics
  332. 12:49single-use Plastics plastic containers
  333. 12:53food
  334. 12:54containers almost everything that we
  335. 12:56know of has some plastic element to it
  336. 12:59and that's really at the root of a lot
  337. 13:02of the problems that we have because the
  338. 13:03chemicals that are used to create the
  339. 13:05Plastics are leeching the Plastics
  340. 13:07themselves are breaking up leading to
  341. 13:10microplastic and nanoplastic release
  342. 13:12that we are just being constantly
  343. 13:14bombarded with on a daily basis and what
  344. 13:17about beauty products because I had this
  345. 13:19conversation with my partner recently so
  346. 13:20we're in the process now I'm 32 years
  347. 13:22old so it's that kind of season of life
  348. 13:24where you start thinking about having a
  349. 13:25family and kids and such and so we've
  350. 13:28both become become pretty conscious of
  351. 13:32the products that we're applying every
  352. 13:33day from shampoos to deodrant for the
  353. 13:35most part if you grab a product off of a
  354. 13:37store shelf nine times out of 10 there
  355. 13:40are chemicals of concern in them and
  356. 13:42we're talking about major retailers big
  357. 13:45box stores if you go to smaller let's
  358. 13:47say health food stores and chains like
  359. 13:49that then the percentage is much lower
  360. 13:52so the you have a better chance of
  361. 13:54getting a safer product at a health food
  362. 13:56store and just to before we get into it
  363. 13:58can you give me an overview of your
  364. 14:00personal education and the career
  365. 14:02Journey you've traveled that have
  366. 14:04resulted in the wisdom that you have now
  367. 14:06yes so I am a PhD toxicologist I started
  368. 14:10studying reproductive toxicity in the
  369. 14:12laboratory as an undergrad and we were
  370. 14:14looking at the effect of environmental
  371. 14:16chemicals that are pretty much
  372. 14:18everywhere in the environment they're
  373. 14:21the products of combustion so the
  374. 14:22combustion of gasoline in cars um in
  375. 14:25cigarettes in cooking so some of these
  376. 14:28chemicals we looked at the impact on of
  377. 14:30them on the reproductive system in males
  378. 14:32and females and what we saw was pretty
  379. 14:35striking such that when the animals are
  380. 14:39challenged with these chemicals and
  381. 14:41they're pregnant then The
  382. 14:44Offspring not only the daughters and the
  383. 14:47sons but also the grandchildren are
  384. 14:50impacted by the grandmother being
  385. 14:54exposed how does that work so when a
  386. 14:59woman is pregnant with a female daughter
  387. 15:02her developing ovaries which will then
  388. 15:04someday become contain the eggs that
  389. 15:06will then become the grandchildren are
  390. 15:08also in the same environment as the
  391. 15:11mother so what the what the mother is
  392. 15:15being exposed to the baby is also being
  393. 15:18exposed to and also her grandchildren
  394. 15:20are being exposed so if a mother is
  395. 15:24exposed to toxins her baby's babies are
  396. 15:27being exposed to those toxins that's
  397. 15:29exactly right so there's sort of a
  398. 15:30generational
  399. 15:32toxification
  400. 15:34of people yeah that's called
  401. 15:36multi-generational toxicity and it even
  402. 15:39goes a step further transgenerational
  403. 15:42that's when great grandchildren can be
  404. 15:44impacted because what's happening in
  405. 15:45utero is epigenetic changes so changes
  406. 15:48to our DNA that are then being passed
  407. 15:51down through our progyny so great
  408. 15:54grandchildren even if they live a
  409. 15:56perfectly clean lifestyle and haven't
  410. 15:58been osed to toxins could have already
  411. 16:01been genetically predisposed to
  412. 16:03developing some of these conditions are
  413. 16:05there particular toxins that you think
  414. 16:07are especially susceptible to this sort
  415. 16:10of
  416. 16:11transgenerational passing down through
  417. 16:14mutations in our DNA yeah it's the
  418. 16:16endocrine disruptors things like
  419. 16:18phalates bisphenol past chemicals a lot
  420. 16:21of the endocrine disruptors that some
  421. 16:25people are familiar with other people
  422. 16:26are not but that are found in our
  423. 16:28everyday products like non-stick
  424. 16:29cookware the makeup and cosmetics that
  425. 16:31we're using the plastic containers that
  426. 16:33we're buying food
  427. 16:35in what is an endocrine disruptor
  428. 16:38explain that to me like I'm N9 years old
  429. 16:41okay so in the human body we have eight
  430. 16:43endocrine glands so they're little
  431. 16:45centers in our bodies and they secrete
  432. 16:47hormones and these hormones regulate
  433. 16:49pretty much everything that you can
  434. 16:51think of so from sleep wake digestion to
  435. 16:55how well your brain works cognition to
  436. 16:58metabolism so how quickly you can burn
  437. 17:00calories uh how much fat you deposit how
  438. 17:04much fat you can lose and also your
  439. 17:06fertility if you're able to have
  440. 17:07children someday so endocrine disruptors
  441. 17:10are coming in and they're basically
  442. 17:12disrupting like just as the name
  443. 17:14indicates they're throwing the balance
  444. 17:16off they're messing up with the
  445. 17:18signaling they're causing everything to
  446. 17:19go Haywire in our bodies so we really
  447. 17:22need to be careful especially for
  448. 17:23children whose bodies are rapidly
  449. 17:26developing and then you're throwing in
  450. 17:27these endocrine disrup chemicals it's
  451. 17:30like adding gasoline to you know like a
  452. 17:32dumpster fire basically and as it
  453. 17:34relates to children are they especially
  454. 17:37susceptible to endocrine disruptors
  455. 17:39because they're in a developmental stage
  456. 17:41absolutely so with children it's
  457. 17:43extremely unfortunate that they are the
  458. 17:47most susceptible and most vulnerable to
  459. 17:49a lot of toxins because like you said
  460. 17:51they're growing they're not able to
  461. 17:54detoxify in fact a child's
  462. 17:56detoxification capacity doesn't ful F
  463. 17:59develop until the age of 10 years so
  464. 18:01detoxification capacity what's that yes
  465. 18:04so the ability of your body to detoxify
  466. 18:06chemicals we all have it everyone has it
  467. 18:09the liver and the kidney are the detox
  468. 18:10organs the main ones but we have this
  469. 18:13capability of being able to break these
  470. 18:16chemicals down and remove them so that
  471. 18:18they don't cause harm in our bodies but
  472. 18:20with children that ability isn't fully
  473. 18:23developed until the age of 10 years old
  474. 18:25so if you think about all these little
  475. 18:27children they're being exposed even
  476. 18:30before they're born after they're born
  477. 18:32and then they can't even get rid of
  478. 18:33these chemicals from their body until
  479. 18:35they're 10 years
  480. 18:36old and what are some of the illnesses
  481. 18:39or diseases that we see in children that
  482. 18:41are have been heavily exposed to these
  483. 18:43endocrine disruptors in our everyday
  484. 18:45environment the worst is cancer so we
  485. 18:47see an increased risk of childhood
  486. 18:49leukemia with certain exposures there's
  487. 18:52also neurodevelopmental delays so
  488. 18:54cognitive deficits in children that are
  489. 18:56exposed to these chemicals we also see
  490. 18:59increased rates of
  491. 19:00obesity obesity in children is
  492. 19:03skyrocketing now unprecedented levels
  493. 19:06that we have not seen before and it's
  494. 19:08likely due to these chemicals and this
  495. 19:10genetic predisposition and programming
  496. 19:13that kids are just being dealt the worst
  497. 19:16hand possible what about things like
  498. 19:19neurod Divergence is there links between
  499. 19:21things like ADHD and these endocrine
  500. 19:23disruptors and you know ADHD autism etc
  501. 19:27etc yeah there is a link actually so
  502. 19:30some of these chemicals have been known
  503. 19:32to worsen these
  504. 19:35behavioral conditions like ADHD and
  505. 19:38autism like you
  506. 19:39mentioned and have they have they done
  507. 19:41studies on this yes so there's
  508. 19:43associations where they'll measure the
  509. 19:45amount of these chemicals in children
  510. 19:47through their urine or through their
  511. 19:48blood and they'll confirm the severity
  512. 19:50of these conditions and be able to
  513. 19:52correlate it with the amount of the
  514. 19:54chemicals in their
  515. 19:55bodies and what about um the impact this
  516. 19:58has on things like puberty because I was
  517. 20:00reading some stats before that I think
  518. 20:02it's is it women are having girls are
  519. 20:05getting going through puberty earlier
  520. 20:06and earlier or is it later and later I
  521. 20:08can't remember it's one of the two it's
  522. 20:09earlier earlier and earlier so children
  523. 20:11who are being exposed to these chemicals
  524. 20:14are experiencing earlier puberty earlier
  525. 20:17breast development earlier um menstrual
  526. 20:20cycles and what that does is actually
  527. 20:22shift the entire window because if you
  528. 20:24think about it we're born with a c a set
  529. 20:26number of eggs in our ovaries once those
  530. 20:29eggs are gone that's when you start
  531. 20:31having menopause so what's happening
  532. 20:32when you start your period earlier you
  533. 20:35actually go through menopause earlier
  534. 20:37and that can come with this whole host
  535. 20:39of risk factors bone fractures and so on
  536. 20:42and so forth and this is because of
  537. 20:45those endocrine disruptors likely yes
  538. 20:47how how would they
  539. 20:49know they've done studies on this as
  540. 20:52well so you can see that they've done um
  541. 20:54observational studies where they'll ask
  542. 20:56uh families uh when did your child start
  543. 21:00using Beauty and personal care products
  544. 21:01which are loaded with these
  545. 21:03chemicals the children who used more
  546. 21:06products have more phades more endocrine
  547. 21:09disruptors in their blood and in their
  548. 21:11urine and then they have earlier puberty
  549. 21:14unfortunately and as it relates to
  550. 21:16fertility generally in
  551. 21:19adults are you aware of the shifts we've
  552. 21:22seen in infertility like what are the
  553. 21:24numbers how do you quantify the
  554. 21:26changes well over the last 100 years or
  555. 21:28so there's been a drastic decline in the
  556. 21:31number of live births so that's one of
  557. 21:33the numbers that I have looked at
  558. 21:34recently right so it isn't necessarily
  559. 21:36that more people um are experiencing
  560. 21:39infertility it could be a measure of
  561. 21:41people are having children later could
  562. 21:43be um people are just having less
  563. 21:45children but it is an overall measure of
  564. 21:48uh population level so it looks like
  565. 21:50there's just less children being born
  566. 21:52and that could be for a whole number of
  567. 21:53reasons right are people not able to
  568. 21:56have kids are they choosing not to have
  569. 21:58kids I would almost argue that it's the
  570. 22:02fact that people are not able to have
  571. 22:03kids when you correlate that with the
  572. 22:05fact that sperm counts have declined by
  573. 22:0750% worldwide that is absolutely
  574. 22:10astonishing we're not at the point yet
  575. 22:13where humans will go
  576. 22:15extinct but if we continue on this path
  577. 22:18and don't make changes which there are
  578. 22:21many ways that we can make
  579. 22:23changes then we might be looking
  580. 22:26at population decline
  581. 22:31isn't it the job of the FDA or some kind
  582. 22:33of government body to regulate the
  583. 22:37chemicals that are in our everyday items
  584. 22:40you would think right in Europe the
  585. 22:43European commission has a much better
  586. 22:45system of regulating chemicals so they
  587. 22:48require upfront Chemical Testing
  588. 22:50depending on the amount that is produced
  589. 22:53so chemical manufacturers need to
  590. 22:55provide data so they have to fund these
  591. 22:58studies
  592. 22:58these laboratory studies they have to
  593. 23:00fund them and provide this package of
  594. 23:03information to the European chemicals
  595. 23:05agency or eeka and once they do that
  596. 23:08then based on the amount that they're
  597. 23:10producing you have to give more
  598. 23:11information you have to have more
  599. 23:13testing such that if you're producing
  600. 23:16several metric tons of a chemical you've
  601. 23:19got to do a whole bunch of studies to
  602. 23:21really prove that it is safe not only
  603. 23:23for people but also animals and the
  604. 23:25environment that it's not going to be
  605. 23:28something that is persistent that builds
  606. 23:30up that can't be broken down that starts
  607. 23:32to accumulate because that's what we're
  608. 23:34seeing now with some of these chemicals
  609. 23:36and that's really the problem is that
  610. 23:37they don't break down they don't go away
  611. 23:39they don't disappear so then what
  612. 23:40happens it basically disrupts the entire
  613. 23:43ecosystem of the planet and we're we're
  614. 23:46not disconnected from that right we're
  615. 23:48connected to the ecosystem we rely on
  616. 23:50that so if if we're looking at it from
  617. 23:52the standpoint that testing of chemicals
  618. 23:55upfront that is absolutely something
  619. 23:57that we should should be doing but no
  620. 23:59one is really mandating that except in
  621. 24:01Europe why don't they mandate it in
  622. 24:03other parts of the world like the United
  623. 24:05States our system wasn't set up like
  624. 24:08that over here I think we've got a
  625. 24:10different
  626. 24:11relationship um with between the
  627. 24:13government and with industry I think
  628. 24:15there is a lack of regulations a lack of
  629. 24:19requirements for toxicity testing
  630. 24:22combined with the lack of corporate
  631. 24:24responsibility so a lot of these
  632. 24:26manufacturers don't want to have to foot
  633. 24:28the bill and pay millions of dollars to
  634. 24:30have testing only to show that this
  635. 24:32chemical that they are so excited in
  636. 24:34love with can't be used because it's
  637. 24:37toxic do you think it is malicious and
  638. 24:40intentional in terms of do you think
  639. 24:42there's a concerted effort to make sure
  640. 24:44that the government doesn't increase
  641. 24:45regulation on these industries so that
  642. 24:47they can continue to produce lowcost
  643. 24:50items that
  644. 24:51are have long shelf lives and um are
  645. 24:56cheaper I would hope not but it's
  646. 24:58looking like that and it's just this
  647. 25:01whole system is not set up to protect
  648. 25:05consumers and then the environment at
  649. 25:07least in the US so you you don't have
  650. 25:09your period yourself you're told that
  651. 25:12you your best option is to go do
  652. 25:14IVF you then go on a bit of a journey
  653. 25:17yourself to unlearn lots of things you
  654. 25:18learn in toxicology
  655. 25:20training what was the ending to that
  656. 25:22story in terms of what did you do then
  657. 25:24did you go find a different doctor did
  658. 25:26what did you change and what is the
  659. 25:29ending of that story well I fell down a
  660. 25:31rabbit hole of research and I had to
  661. 25:34pick myself up and say hey you know what
  662. 25:36I'm going to take matters into my own
  663. 25:37hands I'm going outside of the route
  664. 25:41that I thought I was supposed to go down
  665. 25:43the mainstream route so I kind of went I
  666. 25:46went sideways a little bit and I went
  667. 25:47with integrative and functional medicine
  668. 25:50and so I went looking for the root cause
  669. 25:52the root cause which is not necessarily
  670. 25:54what I was being guided toward with the
  671. 25:57conventional route so with integrative
  672. 26:00and functional medicine there was
  673. 26:01personalized testing and of course this
  674. 26:03was all upfront cost for me but this was
  675. 26:06something that was absolutely vital so I
  676. 26:09found a way to pay for these tests and
  677. 26:12they told me exactly what I'm deficient
  678. 26:14in what I need to do and they guided me
  679. 26:17so I first started with removing
  680. 26:20inflammatory foods and really dialing in
  681. 26:22on my diet and I saw relief from my
  682. 26:25symptoms in within two weeks very rapid
  683. 26:28once I started removing these triggers
  684. 26:30that were causing digestive problems
  685. 26:32then I started to see Improvement very
  686. 26:34fast but it was then going on six months
  687. 26:38and I kind of felt like I hit a plateau
  688. 26:40said there's something else that's still
  689. 26:42triggering me there's something else
  690. 26:43that's still bothering me and I don't
  691. 26:45feel 100% even though I've done all the
  692. 26:47work I've cleaned up my diet I cook all
  693. 26:49my meals at home I have sourced the best
  694. 26:51Quality Meats and vegetables I even
  695. 26:54started growing my own food and there
  696. 26:56was still something there something was
  697. 26:58not not right and so then I started
  698. 27:00targeting things in my home my makeup
  699. 27:03cabinet in particular was a huge source
  700. 27:07of trigger for me in terms of chemicals
  701. 27:10and toxicity once I started to clean out
  702. 27:12my makeup drawer I really saw a shift
  703. 27:15because of what I was doing on a
  704. 27:16day-to-day basis I was using several
  705. 27:19cosmetic products I was absolutely
  706. 27:21obsessed with perfumes and fragrances
  707. 27:24once I removed those one by one slowly
  708. 27:27disentangling myself from their just
  709. 27:30being obsessed with them I started to
  710. 27:32see real change and I noticed more
  711. 27:35energy return I was feeling more fit I
  712. 27:38had more mental Clarity more Focus I
  713. 27:41didn't have as many headaches and
  714. 27:43migraines anymore and I just started to
  715. 27:45feel like a more vital person like more
  716. 27:48vitality and did your period return it
  717. 27:51did it did return and it returned and I
  718. 27:53was pregnant within nine months of that
  719. 27:56first the first time when I started this
  720. 27:59whole journey within nine months I was
  721. 28:01pregnant I had my period back within I'd
  722. 28:04probably say three months and then six
  723. 28:06months after that once I got rid of all
  724. 28:07the beauty and personal care products I
  725. 28:10also looked into my Oral Care my oral
  726. 28:12health I had Mercury amalgam feelings
  727. 28:14and Mercury is extremely toxic to
  728. 28:17reproduction but also to the brain once
  729. 28:19I got rid of the Mercury out of my teeth
  730. 28:22that was when things just really took a
  731. 28:25nice a huge leap in my in my health jour
  732. 28:28journey and how were you able to measure
  733. 28:31the improvements I know you can say you
  734. 28:33know I felt better but could you measure
  735. 28:35the improvements biochemically in a lab
  736. 28:37somehow Yes actually that was part of
  737. 28:40this entire Journey so there was regular
  738. 28:41routine testing going on whenever we
  739. 28:43made changes I was working with these
  740. 28:46practitioners and I made changes and we
  741. 28:47would do tests and say look your numbers
  742. 28:49came back it looks great you removed the
  743. 28:51Mercury amalgam fillings from your teeth
  744. 28:53your mercury levels have dropped really
  745. 28:56yeah it was pretty shocking and I felt
  746. 28:59almost instantly better when they took
  747. 29:00those out of my mouth it was that
  748. 29:03striking of an effect knowing what you
  749. 29:07know surely it's built up a bit of um I
  750. 29:10don't know a bit of a if I knew all that
  751. 29:13you knew I think about toxins in our
  752. 29:16environment I would be a a really
  753. 29:18annoying person at like every dinner
  754. 29:20party and B there'd be a certain sense
  755. 29:23of I guess emergency and urgency to me
  756. 29:27because I'd be looking around all my
  757. 29:28friends and I'd be if I understood the
  758. 29:30consequences of them drinking from that
  759. 29:32plastic container or putting that
  760. 29:34product on their face I feel like I'd
  761. 29:36trying to be Shout Shout at the world to
  762. 29:38tell them to stop do you do you feel a
  763. 29:41sense of that you you directly witnessed
  764. 29:42the impact that making these changes and
  765. 29:45detoxifying your environment had on you
  766. 29:46do you feel a sense of like you
  767. 29:49know absolutely I mean I can't even tell
  768. 29:52you how much passion it has ignited in
  769. 29:55me to be able to share this information
  770. 29:58and spread it as far and wide as
  771. 30:00possible because it's literally
  772. 30:01affecting every single person on this
  773. 30:02planet and I do find it sometimes
  774. 30:05challenging not to call someone out and
  775. 30:08say hey be careful with that but you
  776. 30:11know I think it comes from being a
  777. 30:12living example and I found that that is
  778. 30:15much more effective at being a living
  779. 30:17example instead of telling people don't
  780. 30:19do this don't do that showing them
  781. 30:22what's possible look at what happened to
  782. 30:24me look at my journey look at the
  783. 30:26benefit that I feel and then once to
  784. 30:28start removing these things and making
  785. 30:30these simple swaps it's about simple
  786. 30:32small incremental shifts that anyone can
  787. 30:35do over the long term because it's
  788. 30:38really about uh it's a marathon not a
  789. 30:40race it's not about you've got to throw
  790. 30:42everything away and you've got to hide
  791. 30:44under a rock because I tried that and it
  792. 30:46didn't work and it caused more stress
  793. 30:48and stress is harmful MH so being a
  794. 30:51living example empowering people with
  795. 30:55information educating about the problem
  796. 30:58but coming with the
  797. 31:00solution you mentioned cancer is one of
  798. 31:03the downstream consequences of living in
  799. 31:05a toxic
  800. 31:06environment and we talked about how
  801. 31:09sperm quality has reduced over the last
  802. 31:11couple of decades when we look at the
  803. 31:13stats around cancer are there any stats
  804. 31:15in particular that you think are most
  805. 31:17clearly associated with us living in
  806. 31:19such such a to toxic environment one of
  807. 31:21them that always brings to mind is
  808. 31:22breast cancer because I I think I read
  809. 31:24or heard that breast cancer is on the
  810. 31:26rise or has been rising for the last
  811. 31:28couple of decades and when you look at
  812. 31:30the Western World versus something like
  813. 31:32you know a tribe in in Africa they don't
  814. 31:35see the same levels of breast cancer
  815. 31:37yeah that is definitely a concern
  816. 31:39because cancer historically was a
  817. 31:41disease of age aging it wasn't so common
  818. 31:44that you see cancer in your 30s 40s and
  819. 31:48even 50s now we're seeing a shift the
  820. 31:50window is moving earlier and earlier
  821. 31:53cancer incidence like you said breast
  822. 31:55cancer incidence is definitely on the r
  823. 31:58I myself never knew anyone that suffered
  824. 32:01from breast cancer or survived it until
  825. 32:04I hit my 30s then I knew five people
  826. 32:07that had it including two people that I
  827. 32:09worked with in the toxicology lab and
  828. 32:12what are your suspicions about the root
  829. 32:14causes of this Rising
  830. 32:15cancer I definitely think there is an
  831. 32:18huge environmental component to it
  832. 32:20because a lot of what was believed
  833. 32:22decades ago was that disease and cancer
  834. 32:25incidents had to do with your genes you
  835. 32:28were just genetically
  836. 32:30predisposed you were unlucky but in
  837. 32:34actuality what we're seeing now is that
  838. 32:36the environment plays such a massive
  839. 32:39role in whether or not you actually have
  840. 32:41cancer so just because you have the pre
  841. 32:44disposition to developing breast cancer
  842. 32:46such as the braco gene doesn't mean
  843. 32:48you'll get it it really depends on your
  844. 32:51lifestyle and how you lived but also how
  845. 32:55your ancestors lived right we talked
  846. 32:57about about the multigenerational effect
  847. 32:59of these chemicals depending on how your
  848. 33:02ancestors lived how your grandmother and
  849. 33:04how your mother lived could predispose
  850. 33:07you to this and have there been any
  851. 33:09studies that show the impact of these
  852. 33:11sort of everyday chemicals on cancer
  853. 33:14risk yes and that's something that is I
  854. 33:18don't want to say that it's exciting but
  855. 33:20I'm glad that we finally have proof I
  856. 33:22don't want to see these studies I I hate
  857. 33:25seeing this actually I'm really angry
  858. 33:27that people have to suffer with cancer
  859. 33:30because it's so
  860. 33:32preventable there was a study recently
  861. 33:35that looked at removing certain
  862. 33:37ingredients from Beauty and personal
  863. 33:39care products so women without any
  864. 33:41history of breast
  865. 33:42cancer were asked to remove these
  866. 33:45ingredients from their products for 28
  867. 33:47days so that's very short four weeks
  868. 33:51right they took cells from the breast
  869. 33:55tissue they were all normal they
  870. 33:57measured the amount of breast cancer
  871. 33:58gene
  872. 34:00expression after 28 days they took
  873. 34:02another sample so after 28 days of
  874. 34:04removing these ingredients they took
  875. 34:06another sample and they saw that the
  876. 34:08breast cancer gene expression
  877. 34:12dropped and the only thing that they
  878. 34:15were asked to change about their
  879. 34:16lifestyle was to remove these
  880. 34:18ingredients from their beauty and
  881. 34:19personal care products and which
  882. 34:21products were they told to remove and
  883. 34:23what ingredients were those it was skin
  884. 34:25care deodorant shampoo things that most
  885. 34:28people are using and the ingredients
  886. 34:30were
  887. 34:31phades which can often be found in
  888. 34:34fragrance so the seemingly innocuous
  889. 34:37little term on the ingredients list
  890. 34:40fragrance or
  891. 34:42parfume can contain a huge number of
  892. 34:45chemicals it's hidden behind this
  893. 34:48umbrella term because by law in Europe
  894. 34:51and in the US manufacturers do not have
  895. 34:53to disclose this it is considered trade
  896. 34:55secret and within that chemical mixture
  897. 34:58are known
  898. 35:01carcinogens endocrine disruptors like
  899. 35:04phalates and the most potent allergens
  900. 35:06known to
  901. 35:08man and with phalates the reason that
  902. 35:10they're in fragrances and that
  903. 35:12manufacturers love them so much is there
  904. 35:14what are known as film formers so it
  905. 35:17helps the fragrance to stick to surfaces
  906. 35:19like your skin your clothing and it
  907. 35:21helps to make it last longer and linger
  908. 35:24so if you've ever sprayed something on
  909. 35:27yourself and are still able to smell it
  910. 35:29hours later that's a Telltale sign that
  911. 35:32you've been exposed to thetes that you
  912. 35:34have thetes in that fragrance in that
  913. 35:35product and how many deant on the Shelf
  914. 35:39have phalates in them if it's got a
  915. 35:41fragrance in
  916. 35:42it almost all of them okay it's code
  917. 35:45it's code for endocrine disrupting
  918. 35:47valades essentially you can assume that
  919. 35:49and in fact it's safe to assume that
  920. 35:51they contain allads so I mean this is
  921. 35:54one of the deodrants that I often use um
  922. 35:57it's just a I mean for anyone that's
  923. 36:00just listening it's just like one of the
  924. 36:01doents You' find on a shelf in any store
  925. 36:03that comes in a little is this an
  926. 36:05aluminium can yeah it is an aluminium
  927. 36:07can does this have thetes in it how do I
  928. 36:11know so you turn turn The Container
  929. 36:14around and check the ingredients list do
  930. 36:15you see a word fragrance or SL parfume
  931. 36:19yeah fragrance brackets
  932. 36:21parfume that's what you're looking for
  933. 36:24okay so I shouldn't be spraying this all
  934. 36:25over my body right okay so sometimes
  935. 36:28you'll see on there it'll say th free
  936. 36:32okay right that's helpful but that still
  937. 36:34doesn't take away the fact that there
  938. 36:35are known carcinogens and allergens in
  939. 36:37there so if you've got any kind of
  940. 36:39respiratory problems any kind of skin
  941. 36:41problems and you just don't want to
  942. 36:43expose yourself to unnecessary
  943. 36:45carcinogens then it would be beneficial
  944. 36:47to avoid fragrance what about a little
  945. 36:49spray just
  946. 36:51a I mean it depends is that really going
  947. 36:54to benefit you is are you going to get
  948. 36:56any effect from that little spr want to
  949. 36:57smell so this is why I spray this
  950. 37:00because you know this top is quite tight
  951. 37:01so if if it's tight and it's hot in here
  952. 37:03I'll end up smelling so I just spray it
  953. 37:05and then I'm really do it's public
  954. 37:07service for other people really I'm fine
  955. 37:08to smell myself I can't even smell it
  956. 37:10but it's for you know Jack and the team
  957. 37:13well the question would be can you find
  958. 37:15a safer alternative and the answer is
  959. 37:18yes how do I find a safer alternative
  960. 37:20what am I looking for so you don't want
  961. 37:22fragrances and you definitely yes so
  962. 37:24avoid the word fragrance unless it says
  963. 37:26that the fragrance comes from essential
  964. 37:28oils okay but but if it comes from
  965. 37:30essential oils will it still make me
  966. 37:32smell nice yes okay yes because that's
  967. 37:36where aromatic compounds come from they
  968. 37:39come from plants but just to give you
  969. 37:41more context on this aerosol spray this
  970. 37:43is one of the worst products that you
  971. 37:45can use I've been using it every day
  972. 37:48yeah so I'll tell you why aerosols use
  973. 37:51propellants propellants are derived from
  974. 37:53petroleum and there was a recall on
  975. 37:56thousands of products within the last
  976. 37:58couple years that the propellants were a
  977. 38:01source of benzene contamination and
  978. 38:03Benzene is a known human carcinogen that
  979. 38:06you do not want to be inhaling because
  980. 38:09what you inhale goes to your brain it
  981. 38:11goes quickly all over your body through
  982. 38:12the bloodstream you don't want to be
  983. 38:14delivering a known human carcinogen into
  984. 38:17your bloodstream you're just it's not
  985. 38:20helping you at
  986. 38:22all because Benzene is known to cause
  987. 38:25leukemia in
  988. 38:26people so it's a no-brainer if you want
  989. 38:29to avoid that to avoid aerosols but not
  990. 38:33only that if you think about how you're
  991. 38:34actually applying the product you're
  992. 38:36spraying it like this right in a stream
  993. 38:37and it heads toward your face then
  994. 38:40that's also an inhalation risk because
  995. 38:42there's particles in there there's
  996. 38:44solids in there you don't want to be
  997. 38:46inhaling unnecessary things so the best
  998. 38:48option for deodorant is to look for
  999. 38:50something that has essential oils and is
1000. 38:52a roll on or a stick solid is there
1001. 38:56anything on the label that I can trust
1002. 38:58when it comes to doents is is there like
1003. 39:00a certain term that I'm looking for you
  1004. 39:01said phate 3 phate 3 is there anything
1005. 39:04else that yes so dalite free and paraben
1006. 39:06free are definitely helpful okay because
1007. 39:10then we know at least two of the known
1008. 39:13endocrine disruptors that we have
1009. 39:15evidence on are not found in that
  1010. 39:17product but that doesn't exonerate
1011. 39:19everything else we still need to be
1012. 39:22diligent about the ingredients because
1013. 39:24they are sources of contamination of
1014. 39:27byproducts of carcinogens and hidden
1015. 39:30toxins essentially it is pretty crazy
1016. 39:33that I could get a lighter and go and it
1017. 39:36would be flammable and then I spray that
  1018. 39:38on my body like like it's like I'm
1019. 39:40lathering myself in petrol or something
  1020. 39:42it is pretty crazy that's essentially
1021. 39:44what that is petrol yeah because it's
1022. 39:47coming from petroleum all the
1023. 39:49propellants and some of the other base
  1024. 39:51ingredients I'm sure I haven't looked at
1025. 39:52it but I'm almost certain because that
1026. 39:55is the source of the majority of
1027. 39:56ingredients go into these products this
1028. 39:58is my last day ever using aerosol
  1029. 40:02deodrant let's pull up a
  1030. 40:04bin
  1031. 40:08okay
  1032. 40:10goodbye okay that's gone okay is this a
1033. 40:12better alternative what I've got here is
1034. 40:15I've got this roll on deodrant which I
1035. 40:17think is one of the refillable ones um
  1036. 40:20is this a better
1037. 40:21alternative at least from this level of
  1038. 40:24what I know of the fact that it's a
1039. 40:26solid yes but I have to see the
1040. 40:27ingredients list we have to look at the
  1041. 40:29ingredients list to really know what's
1042. 40:31actually in the deodorant okay so at
  1043. 40:34least from a sustainability standpoint
1044. 40:36that's definitely great to see that it's
1045. 40:38not in a plastic container that is
1046. 40:40refillable but we really need to check
1047. 40:42the ingredients okay so I've got the
  1048. 40:44ingredients list here I've just pulled
  1049. 40:45it up on my
  1050. 40:46iPad it says tapioca
1051. 40:49starch baking soda sunflower seed
  1052. 40:54wax Coco seed butter
1053. 40:59Toral exate no idea what that is sterile
1054. 41:04alcohol perfume so do you recognize the
1055. 41:07ingredients are they easily recognizable
1056. 41:09or do they sound highly synthetic very
1057. 41:12chemical like it says par
1058. 41:15perfume is there any indication on
1059. 41:17what's in the perfume all antiag are
1060. 41:20scented with a blend of fragrances to
1061. 41:21give you the scense you love hm is there
1062. 41:25any indication that it's salad free and
  1063. 41:27parin
1064. 41:30free no that's what should give us pause
  1065. 41:34is when we don't know what's in that
  1066. 41:36fragrance term that's really the
  1067. 41:40issue okay I mean there's just so many
  1068. 41:42bloody
  1069. 41:43words phate free
  1070. 41:47deodorant I've got a better way that I
1071. 41:49can help you search okay if you just
1072. 41:51type in the word organic and then
  1073. 41:53whatever product you're looking for
1074. 41:54organic deodorant that is going to
1075. 41:56whittle down the choices significantly
1076. 41:59for you well and you're saying that if
1077. 42:01it's organic it that means that it won't
1078. 42:03contain the phalates and the parabens
1079. 42:06not necessarily this is where it gets a
1080. 42:07little bit nuanced but at least it
1081. 42:09whittel down the results that you'll get
1082. 42:11in sege and then you can check the
1083. 42:13ingredients one by one and look for the
1084. 42:15one that has essential oils instead of
  1085. 42:18the word fragrance because it's really
1086. 42:20the lack of transparency that should
1087. 42:22make us pause we have no idea what's in
  1088. 42:25there we don't know what we're exposing
1089. 42:27ourselves too and if you're someone who
1090. 42:29is concerned about the chemicals in the
  1091. 42:33products you're using the toxins you're
1092. 42:34being exposed to if you are someone who
1093. 42:36is thinking about getting pregnant are
  1094. 42:39pregnant
1095. 42:41breastfeeding or just health conscious
1096. 42:43and you don't want these toxins in your
1097. 42:45products then this is the work that
1098. 42:48needs to be done interesting so just
  1099. 42:51because it's a roll on doesn't
  1100. 42:53necessarily mean it's safe right okay
  1101. 42:56like you just demonstr
  1102. 42:57and just because it's sustainable also
  1103. 42:59doesn't mean it's safe so there's a
1104. 43:01there's a lot of marketing that goes on
1105. 43:03with products and and manufacturers know
1106. 43:06that consumers are becoming Savvy
  1107. 43:07they're becoming aware and they're
1108. 43:09demanding safer products so they will
1109. 43:11hit all of the buttons and hope that
  1110. 43:13somebody isn't diligent and doesn't see
1111. 43:15through that is fragrance so important
1112. 43:17because fragrance is an indicator that
1113. 43:19it contains these Fates and parabens is
1114. 43:21that why I should be thinking fragrance
1115. 43:23is one indicator for whether the
1116. 43:27cosmetic product is toxic or not yeah
1117. 43:29definitely that would be probably the
1118. 43:31easiest and most obvious way that you
1119. 43:33can weed products out is just look for
1120. 43:35the word fragrance or parfum and if
1121. 43:37there's no indication that it comes from
  1122. 43:39plants that it's from essential oils
1123. 43:41then that's not something that you want
  1124. 43:44to use I read a stat that said 91% of
  1125. 43:47antier Sprints 95% of shaving products
  1126. 43:5083% of moisturizers and 63% of
  1127. 43:53sunscreens contain fragrance and 96% of
  1128. 43:57shampoos 98% of conditioners 97% of hair
1129. 44:00styling products um contain fragrance as
1130. 44:03well why are they putting fragrance and
1131. 44:05everything would would the products not
1132. 44:07sell if there weren't fragrance in there
  1133. 44:09yeah I think it's there's many reasons
1134. 44:10that they put fragrances in so first of
1135. 44:12all we are sensory beings and people
1136. 44:15respond to fragrances fragrances changes
1137. 44:17your mood it uplifts your mood it helps
1138. 44:19you feel more confident fragrances
1139. 44:21affect us on a very Primal level and the
1140. 44:24earlier and earlier that you can get
1141. 44:26hooked on frag es the better for these
  1142. 44:28manufacturers right so that's why
1143. 44:30they're putting fragrances in even
  1144. 44:32children's products and scented
1145. 44:33everything if you notice I've got kids
1146. 44:35we go out and look for slime I said
  1147. 44:37let's look for unscented slime it's
1148. 44:40nearly impossible to find it you'd have
1149. 44:42to make your own slime at home so that's
1150. 44:44what we've started doing and the kids
1151. 44:45love it because they get to you know be
1152. 44:48like little chemists or whatever but you
  1153. 44:50cannot find
1154. 44:52even even they have markers pens crayons
1155. 44:56they've got sent ented stickers I mean
1156. 44:58scented everything scent is everywhere
1157. 45:00now the fragrance industry has
  1158. 45:02absolutely
1159. 45:04exploded in the last 10 or 15 years and
1160. 45:07fragrances are the most pervasive Source
1161. 45:11One of the most pervasive sources of
1162. 45:12toxins in our homes in our daily lives
1163. 45:15it's almost like the new secondhand
1164. 45:17smoke that's how prevalent it is because
1165. 45:20the chemicals once you spray them right
1166. 45:22the reason you smell them is because
1167. 45:24they have volatilized means that they
1168. 45:25have become gases and they reach your
1169. 45:27nose you smell them what that also means
1170. 45:30is that they are in the air Studies have
1171. 45:32shown that these fragrance chemicals
1172. 45:34phalates carcinogens allergens they bind
1173. 45:37to the dust in your home so it's not
  1174. 45:40like I smell this fragrance I sprayed it
1175. 45:42three hours ago and I'm totally fine
  1176. 45:44well it's still in the air it's always
1177. 45:46going to be in the air unless you
  1178. 45:48physically remove the
1179. 45:50dust so if you're not regularly dusting
  1180. 45:54mopping sweeping and vacuuming you're
1181. 45:56becoming re exposed and this is
  1182. 45:58absolutely the worst for a child a baby
1183. 46:02who is crawling on the floor their faces
1184. 46:04and noses and Airways are close to the
1185. 46:05ground so they're inhaling the dust that
  1186. 46:07have settled on the floor I don't know
1187. 46:09many people that are sweeping and
1188. 46:11dusting every single day but if you if
  1189. 46:14you have a child then really I really
1190. 46:17want you to listen to this because the
1191. 46:19child is putting stuff in their mouth so
1192. 46:20they're ingesting these dust particles
1193. 46:23they're ingesting the chemicals that are
  1194. 46:24attached to the dust particles they're
1195. 46:26inhaling them and they can't detox them
  1196. 46:29they can't detoxify them from their
1197. 46:30bodies and so then what happens they
1198. 46:32grow up they start having allergies they
1199. 46:35start having cognitive delays they start
1200. 46:37having behavioral issues they start
1201. 46:40storing more fat they can't lose weight
1202. 46:42they have low energy depression and a
1203. 46:45host of conditions that we think are are
  1204. 46:49common but doesn't mean they're normal
  1205. 46:52and they're avoidable that's that's the
  1206. 46:54part that is so
1207. 46:57important is that these conditions are
  1208. 47:00avoidable I was just reading about
  1209. 47:02allergies as you speaking and it's I've
1210. 47:04got some stats here food allergies um
1211. 47:06the prevalence of food allergies in
1212. 47:08children have increased by 50% since the
  1213. 47:111990s in the United
1214. 47:13States in terms of seasonal allergies in
  1215. 47:162021 approximately 81 million Americans
1216. 47:18were diagnosed with allergic ritis also
1217. 47:22known as hay fever or seasonal allergies
  1218. 47:24by 2018 nearly
1219. 47:2742 million Americans or 133% of the
1220. 47:31population had been diagnosed with
  1221. 47:32asthma in their
1222. 47:34lifetime and I mean why is this
  1223. 47:37happening I mean there's like BBC
  1224. 47:39articles here that show there's been
1225. 47:41huge increases in allergic reactions as
1226. 47:43well um the EpiPen businesses on the
1227. 47:46rise why are allergies getting worse in
  1228. 47:48your opinion yeah I think it's this
1229. 47:51pervasiveness of the overuse of
1230. 47:55fragrances scented products products and
1231. 47:58the lack of awareness about the harm
  1232. 48:01that they cause there's there's studies
1233. 48:03showing that there people who as soon as
1234. 48:05you light a candle then people start
  1235. 48:08having migraines they can't think
1236. 48:10straight anymore they become dizzy but
1237. 48:13not only that like you said increased
1238. 48:15asthma incidents once you get asthma it
1239. 48:17doesn't go away you have reactive
  1240. 48:19Airways so then you're triggered again
1241. 48:21whenever you encounter these chemicals
1242. 48:24what about people who say the Oles have
1243. 48:27exploded over the last couple of years
  1244. 48:29because we're not letting our kids
  1245. 48:31consume more dirt I hear this a lot
  1246. 48:34people say it's because we're becoming
1247. 48:35too sanitized and our kids need to go
1248. 48:37play in the mud that could be it as well
1249. 48:40but I would almost I would like to see
1250. 48:43the data in the rise in fragrances and
1251. 48:46fragrance use overlaid on top of the
1252. 48:49incidents of allergies in children and
1253. 48:52all of these health conditions I want to
1254. 48:54see that data I haven't seen it yet and
1255. 48:56I'm hoping that somebody does these
1256. 48:57these studies because I think they would
1257. 49:00be correlated have you done any research
  1258. 49:03on you know I always I love thinking
  1259. 49:04about other populations and
  1260. 49:06civilizations and that aren't exposed to
  1261. 49:08the environmental factors we're exposed
1262. 49:10to and seeing how they're getting on in
1263. 49:11terms of their health outcomes when
1264. 49:13they're not exposed to microplastics and
1265. 49:16fragrances you know like some of the
1266. 49:17tribes in Africa that are still pretty
1267. 49:19close to being um un contaminate like
1268. 49:24contaminated by human interference in
1269. 49:25the western world have you ever looked
1270. 49:27at any of those civilizations or
1271. 49:30societies yeah the rate and incidence of
  1272. 49:33cancer is almost non-existent at least
1273. 49:35it was almost non-existent but now some
1274. 49:36of these chemicals have spread so far
1275. 49:38and wide and one example being past
1276. 49:42they're known as forever chemicals
  1277. 49:43because they don't degrade they can
1278. 49:44travel so far they basically covered the
1279. 49:46globe they are found in polar bear fat
1280. 49:49so that just tells you how far up the
1281. 49:51food chain these chemicals have traveled
1282. 49:53because they don't break down so as soon
1283. 49:55as an animal eats it and then gets eaten
1284. 49:57by another animal so on and so forth
1285. 49:59then it reaches the apex predators right
1286. 50:01and it's in stored in their fat and in
1287. 50:04polar bears it's been seen that you can
1288. 50:06find some of these chemicals so we know
1289. 50:08how far and wide that these chemicals
1290. 50:10have gone that even these tribes that
  1291. 50:13are in remote locations aren't
1292. 50:17necessarily exempt from being exposed
  1293. 50:20they're also getting exposed it's just
1294. 50:21in the air it's in the water it's in the
1295. 50:24soil and what chemicals are this PE fat
1296. 50:27pasas P what what does that pfas so per
  1297. 50:32and polyfloral alkalol substances it's a
  1298. 50:35huge chemical class of about 15,000
1299. 50:38different chemicals and that includes
  1300. 50:40things like
1301. 50:41PFA pfos and PTFE which are more
  1302. 50:45commonly known as Teflon non-stick
  1303. 50:47chemicals like this non-stick pan that I
  1304. 50:50have here exactly so there that P is p P
1305. 50:57yes PTFE is the chemical name for teflon
1306. 51:01so Teflon is used to create the
1307. 51:03non-stick coating and it is believed
1308. 51:06that because it is so chemically stable
1309. 51:08that it wouldn't come off the pan into
  1310. 51:09your food but that's not true there's
1311. 51:12evidence showing that there is transfer
1312. 51:15from the cookware in normal cooking
1313. 51:17conditions into food not only that when
1314. 51:21you heat that pan high enough it will
1315. 51:23vaporize and get into the air and if you
1316. 51:25inhale it you run the risk of
  1317. 51:28experiencing what's known as Teflon
1318. 51:30flu and it basically has flu like
1319. 51:32symptoms when you inhale that stuff and
1320. 51:34so that would be considered an acute
  1321. 51:37exposure so a onetime higher dose
1322. 51:40exposure but what we really need
1323. 51:42information on are the chronic low doses
1324. 51:45that we're getting just by cooking our
  1325. 51:47daily eggs on
1326. 51:49there have that been any studies done on
1327. 51:51the the impact of people cooking on
1328. 51:54these versus people that don't cook with
1329. 51:56these nonstick with the Teflon pans well
1330. 51:59I can tell you that they've measured the
1331. 52:00amount of chemicals that are coming off
1332. 52:02of the pans and so if you've ever had a
  1333. 52:05non-stick piece of
1334. 52:06cookware it scratches very easily yeah
1335. 52:09and some of these scratches are
1336. 52:11microscopic and invisible to the to the
1337. 52:13naked eye Studies have found that a
  1338. 52:16surface scratch can release
1339. 52:199,000 particles from that nonstick
  1340. 52:22coating into your food and if it's a
  1341. 52:25crack
1342. 52:26it that number jumps up to
  1343. 52:282.3
1344. 52:30billion particles that are transferred
1345. 52:32into your food and what's that going to
1346. 52:34do to my health what are these P fats
1347. 52:37doing to my health well P fats are
1348. 52:38linked with several types of cancers so
1349. 52:42kidney and testicular cancer thyroid
1350. 52:45disorders which thyroid problems are so
  1351. 52:49common these days but they're not
1352. 52:51normal then we have increased risk of
  1353. 52:54miscarriage pre-term labor pre-term
1354. 52:57birth preeclampsia which is high blood
  1355. 52:59pressure during pregnancy that's could
1356. 53:02be deadly you also have increased
  1357. 53:05obesity that's linked with past
1358. 53:07chemicals and past also contribute to an
  1359. 53:10increase in
  1360. 53:11endometriosis and PCOS oh
1361. 53:15really so PE people who have
1362. 53:17endometriosis and PCOS they have found
1363. 53:20to have higher levels of pasas in their
1364. 53:22bodies and pasas are found in everybody
1365. 53:25no one's exempt everyone has pasas in
1366. 53:27our bodies but whether or not they're
1367. 53:29able to exert toxicity depends on your
1368. 53:33inner environment depends on how many
1369. 53:35other chemicals your body is working to
1370. 53:37fight off I just pulled up some studies
1371. 53:40here one of the studies from 2023 which
1372. 53:42you might be aware of showed that higher
1373. 53:44levels of pasas in the blood of women in
  1374. 53:46Singapore were associated with a 30 to
1375. 53:4740% lower chance of pregnancy and life
  1376. 53:50birth within one
  1377. 53:53year um and another study sampled 3 81
1378. 53:56blood samples from people trying to lose
1379. 53:58weight and no matter the diet that these
1380. 54:00participants tried they gained weight if
1381. 54:03they had elevated past exposure what the
1382. 54:07hell they gained weight even if they
1383. 54:10tried different diets yeah so these
1384. 54:12chemicals are known endocrine disruptors
1385. 54:15are also known as obesogens so they're
1386. 54:17increasing the prevalence of obesity so
1387. 54:20you store more fat and you can't lose
1388. 54:25it obesogens I thought food was the only
  1389. 54:29obesogen well the chemicals that you're
1390. 54:32being exposed to through your cookwar
  1391. 54:34through food
  1392. 54:36packaging they're also sources of these
1393. 54:39endocrine disruptors and what about
1394. 54:41um cancer is pasas linked to cancer have
1395. 54:44they done any studies on that with with
1396. 54:46animals or yeah in humans it's kidney
  1397. 54:49and testicular
1398. 54:51cancer okay what about prostate I know
1399. 54:54that's a big concern for a lot of men
  1400. 54:56and particular I haven't seen direct
  1401. 54:58evidence on that but I wouldn't be
1402. 54:59surprised if that was also linked
  1403. 55:01because that's also a hormonal
1404. 55:03tissue a study from 2021 in mice at the
  1405. 55:07University of
1406. 55:08Illinois found that a high fat diet
1407. 55:12combined with pasas exposure could cause
1408. 55:14changes in prostate cells that promote
  1409. 55:17tumor
1410. 55:18growth is there is there an alternative
1411. 55:20to P is there something that I could use
1412. 55:22instead of this nonstick pan yeah just
1413. 55:25get rid of the nonstick chemicals all
1414. 55:26together and that would be something as
1415. 55:28simple as cast iron stainless steel
  1416. 55:31glass cookware ceramic cookware just a
  1417. 55:34bit more annoying isn't it yeah I mean
1418. 55:37non-stick cookware is amazing I mean you
1419. 55:40you can make food slide off clean up is
1420. 55:42a breeze but at what cost you're you
1421. 55:44might be saving time when you're cooking
1422. 55:47but how much of that time is being taken
1423. 55:49off the back end of your lifespan is the
1424. 55:52question Susan throw this away I would
1425. 55:56but see that's the other thing is if you
  1426. 55:58are then hearing this and you're like I
1427. 56:01got to get rid of my cookware well guess
1428. 56:02what you throw that out and it ends up
  1429. 56:04in a landfill and the P fast chemicals
1430. 56:07are now in the environment where they
1431. 56:08won't go away so I'm throwing so it
1432. 56:11really depends right if you are in the
1433. 56:14position to where you can get rid of it
1434. 56:16then it might benefit you but the key is
1435. 56:19to really stop buying it but you already
1436. 56:22have it so it's really up to you in
  1437. 56:24terms of cookwar that's that's better
1438. 56:26for me avoid the non-stick go for
1439. 56:29stainless steel cast iron what about the
  1440. 56:32utensils then so things like I've got a
1441. 56:35plastic spatula here in my hand is this
  1442. 56:38good no because that's melting it's
1443. 56:41breaking off into little tiny bits and
  1444. 56:44fragments of microplastics and
1445. 56:46nanoplastics in your food so bad spatula
1446. 56:51yes okay the the silicone the silicone
1447. 56:55rubber the plastic if you just think
1448. 56:58about the fact that it's being heated up
1449. 57:00if you've ever looked at one the
  1450. 57:02Integrity you'll see it's starting to
1451. 57:04fray if you see any bits coming off then
1452. 57:06you know it's definitely breaking up and
  1453. 57:08getting into your food yeah there's
1454. 57:10loads of little pieces missing from the
1455. 57:11end of the plastic and I guess they
1456. 57:14that's gone into the food most likely
1457. 57:16right slowly dissolving over time right
  1458. 57:18because with nonstick cookware you can't
  1459. 57:20use metal utensils right you'll scratch
1460. 57:22the surface but guess what even with
1461. 57:24that you can scratch the surface so the
1462. 57:26wooden one here in my left hand that's
1463. 57:29better yes at least from a safety and
  1464. 57:32microplastic and nonstick chemical
  1465. 57:34perspective
1466. 57:36yes are you concerned at all no not at
1467. 57:39all okay so wood is fine wood is totally
1468. 57:41fine okay what people normally will say
  1469. 57:43is I can't properly clean the wood but I
1470. 57:45haven't had that issue you just clean it
1471. 57:47with soap and water and it is fine okay
  1472. 57:52so we'll keep the wooden
1473. 57:54spatula um um what else in terms of
1474. 57:57cooking products so I've got this pan
  1475. 57:59here you're saying this is a good one
1476. 58:00stainless steel yes great keep that
1477. 58:04one keep that one um okay what
1478. 58:08about what about this nice plastic
1479. 58:11container super convenient put my lunch
1480. 58:13in it go to work maybe pop it in the
1481. 58:15microwave heat it up get my takeaway in
1482. 58:17it plastic container good absolutely not
1483. 58:21do not microwave plastic containers even
  1484. 58:23after just a few seconds you'll get
1485. 58:25release of billions of microplastic
1486. 58:27particles into your food just from a
  1487. 58:29tiny Square centimeter you'll get
1488. 58:32billions of microplastic particles and
  1489. 58:34with microplastics they're hard it's a
1490. 58:37solid Mass it does not break down in the
1491. 58:40body what if it says BPA free that's
  1492. 58:44great but it's still plastic it's still
  1493. 58:46microplastic it's still nanoplastic
1494. 58:48releasing and it probably has salades in
1495. 58:51it depending on the type of
  1496. 58:52plastic
1497. 58:54right okay so you don't want to be
1498. 58:56microwaving these and and if I get
1499. 58:58microplastics um into my food what's the
1500. 59:00what's the net impact what's the harm of
  1501. 59:02that well microplastics don't break down
  1502. 59:05they don't go away again they're
  1503. 59:06accumulating in human tissues so they've
1504. 59:09actually been found in a whole number
1505. 59:11I'm pretty sure they're all over the
1506. 59:12body at this point we just have to see
1507. 59:15the the evidence to know right and so
1508. 59:16they're in human L um lungs blood in the
  1509. 59:20gut tissue they're in heart they're in
1510. 59:22brain they are in the placenta they're
1511. 59:25also in penis and they have been
  1512. 59:28detected in there's microplastics in my
1513. 59:30penis yes there could be Studies have
1514. 59:33shown that and even in newborn babies so
1515. 59:36when babies are born they have their
1516. 59:38first bowel movement which is known as
1517. 59:41meconium and in the moonium
1518. 59:43microplastics have been found so that
1519. 59:45means babies are being exposed to
  1520. 59:48microplastics In Utero they're being
1521. 59:50born with Plastics in their body and
1522. 59:52what's the risk of that well the risk is
1523. 59:54that they don't go away number one and
  1524. 59:56on a cellular level they're causing
1525. 59:58inflammation and oxidative stress and
1526. 1:00:00oxidative stress is free radical damage
1527. 1:00:02and what that means is if you ingest
  1528. 1:00:05these microplastic particles which
1529. 1:00:08everyone is and they're in your tissues
1530. 1:00:11and your body cannot get rid of them
  1531. 1:00:13then they're basically like the
1532. 1:00:15equivalent of a million little fires all
1533. 1:00:18over your body and unless you have
  1534. 1:00:21enough detox capability like
1535. 1:00:24antioxidants to get rid of them they're
1536. 1:00:27there to stay what do you mean by detox
1537. 1:00:30capabilities as in my my liver and yeah
1538. 1:00:33exactly every cell in your body has some
1539. 1:00:36antioxidants in it if you if they if you
1540. 1:00:38didn't you would be dead because in
1541. 1:00:40order to live on this planet and breathe
  1542. 1:00:43oxygen we need
1543. 1:00:45antioxidants to neutralize the free
1544. 1:00:47radicals that happen through cellular
1545. 1:00:50respiration right so whenever we breathe
1546. 1:00:52oxygen there are free radicals that are
1547. 1:00:54created and our cells have naturally in
1548. 1:00:57them antioxidants like glutathione and
1549. 1:01:00they help to neutralize these free
1550. 1:01:02radicals but glutathion is also vital
  1551. 1:01:05for detoxifying environmental chemicals
1552. 1:01:08so if you think about it how does the
  1553. 1:01:10body decide what's more important do I
  1554. 1:01:12neutralize these free radicals because I
1555. 1:01:14need to breathe and live or do I have to
1556. 1:01:16deal with these chemicals over here I
  1557. 1:01:18don't know so you're literally being
1558. 1:01:20torn your body is torn at this point
1559. 1:01:23what to deal with first and usually it's
1560. 1:01:26the oxygen I need to breathe so let me
1561. 1:01:28neutralize the free radicals from
  1562. 1:01:30breathing oxygen then I'll deal with
1563. 1:01:33these chemicals later if I have enough
1564. 1:01:35left in the tank and most people don't
1565. 1:01:38modern lifestyles are resulting in
1566. 1:01:41depletion of glutathione our glutathione
1567. 1:01:44is being robbed by these microplastics
1568. 1:01:47by these parabens phalates and other
1569. 1:01:50chemicals that you find in consumer
1570. 1:01:52products you have to sum up in a
1571. 1:01:54sentence what microplastic are doing to
1572. 1:01:56us what would that sentence be slowly
  1573. 1:01:58killing us over
  1574. 1:02:00time we're becoming plastic we're
1575. 1:02:03actually known as the plasticine
1576. 1:02:06Epic humankind is more plastic
1577. 1:02:09eventually we will become more plastic
1578. 1:02:11than we are humans if we cons continue
1579. 1:02:13at this rate there have
1580. 1:02:16been over 300 million metric tons of
  1581. 1:02:20plastics
  1582. 1:02:21produced I mean that's a really big
  1583. 1:02:23number but I can't really W my head
1584. 1:02:25around it and they don't go away they
1585. 1:02:27don't go away that's the problem they
1586. 1:02:29just continually break up into smaller
1587. 1:02:32and smaller and smaller and smaller
  1588. 1:02:35fragments a 2024 study on microplastics
1589. 1:02:38in human livers kidneys and brains found
1590. 1:02:39that all of them contained microplastics
  1591. 1:02:41but the brain contained 10 to 20 times
  1592. 1:02:44more than any other
  1593. 1:02:47organ the brains measured around 0.5%
  1594. 1:02:51plastic by weight that's a guardian
1595. 1:02:53article so does that mean 0.5 5% of my
1596. 1:02:56brain is plastic yes and that's because
1597. 1:02:59plastic is fat soluble and the brain is
1598. 1:03:02mostly fat so microplastics travel there
1599. 1:03:06through the bloodstream we inhale them
1600. 1:03:08they go to the brain and they can't
1601. 1:03:09leave because the brain can the brain
1602. 1:03:11doesn't not have the ability to detoxify
1603. 1:03:14itself the way that other tissues
  1604. 1:03:16do I guess it wasn't expecting the
  1605. 1:03:19plastic right so it's like who's this I
1606. 1:03:21can't get rid of you so just stay but
1607. 1:03:24then what is it doing to you over time
1608. 1:03:25time what is it doing to our brains over
1609. 1:03:27time I'm going to throw this away by the
1610. 1:03:28way I'm not going to micro my food in
1611. 1:03:30plastic anymore um what is it doing to
1612. 1:03:32our brains over time do you think is
  1613. 1:03:33there any
  1614. 1:03:34associations I haven't seen any clear
1615. 1:03:37evidence but my hypothesis is that it's
1616. 1:03:41increasing the likelihood of cognitive
1617. 1:03:43decline and the brain is one of the most
1618. 1:03:46important obviously the most important
1619. 1:03:47organs in our bodies and brain problems
1620. 1:03:50don't usually show up until you're in
1621. 1:03:51your Elder years but i' would be
1622. 1:03:56interested to know if the rate of
1623. 1:03:57dementia if people are getting dementia
1624. 1:03:59and other brain Related Disorders
1625. 1:04:02earlier just like cancer I would not be
1626. 1:04:05surprised if I saw that we drink out of
1627. 1:04:07these um stainless steel cups here on
1628. 1:04:10the dire of a CO are these okay to be
1629. 1:04:12drinking out of yes okay does it say
  1630. 1:04:17because they're not they're not leeching
1631. 1:04:18microplastics into your drink BPA free
  1632. 1:04:21stainless steel okay they weren't
1633. 1:04:23expensive that's good news but um some
1634. 1:04:25times when I go to shops and you know
  1635. 1:04:28supermarkets and stuff I grab these
  1636. 1:04:29plastic bottles full of water there's
  1637. 1:04:31been a lot of conversation around
1638. 1:04:32plastic bottles and water um are these
1639. 1:04:35safe to drink from in your opinion well
1640. 1:04:39if you have no other option then that's
  1641. 1:04:41what you've got and so I don't want
1642. 1:04:42people to think I can never drink
1643. 1:04:44bottled water ever again or I'm going to
  1644. 1:04:46die because that's not the case I myself
1645. 1:04:49traveled here I had to drink from
  1646. 1:04:51bottled water because I didn't bring
1647. 1:04:52enough of my own water with me is that
1648. 1:04:54something that I'm going to panic about
1649. 1:04:57no it's not is it something that I want
1650. 1:05:00to do no but I need water so that's my
1651. 1:05:03only option but if you are able to avoid
1652. 1:05:06that then absolutely avoid bottle water
1653. 1:05:08have there been any studies done on
1654. 1:05:09bottle water yeah there have been so
1655. 1:05:12many studies showing that bottled water
  1656. 1:05:14is a major source of microplastics
1657. 1:05:16Because if you think about it plastic
1658. 1:05:19is not meant to be permanent but it kind
1659. 1:05:22of is but at the same time there are
1660. 1:05:25certain conditions that promote leeching
1661. 1:05:28and one of them is if you put that
1662. 1:05:29plastic water bottle in the sun
1663. 1:05:32UV causes plastic to break down so
  1664. 1:05:35that's releasing microplastics just
1665. 1:05:37squeezing it physical force is causing
  1666. 1:05:41microplastic sharing and
1667. 1:05:43release but not just that just over time
1668. 1:05:46the plastic is just leeching on its own
1669. 1:05:48temperature is another Factor so if you
  1670. 1:05:50leave that in a hot
  1671. 1:05:52car microplastics if you've ever had a
1672. 1:05:55bottle of water sitting in a hot car and
1673. 1:05:57you drink it and it tasted like plastic
  1674. 1:05:58that's because it is it's plastic it's
  1675. 1:06:01becoming more plastic
1676. 1:06:03okay but the microplastics are releasing
1677. 1:06:06endocrine disruptors right the same
1678. 1:06:08phades that we talked about in
1679. 1:06:09fragrances are also in plastic water
1680. 1:06:11bottles what about these water bottles
  1681. 1:06:14that a lot of people have now they're
1682. 1:06:15kind of like Stanley cut star water
1683. 1:06:17bottles that are made of this this metal
1684. 1:06:19are these better yeah definit it's the
1685. 1:06:21same as these stainless steel cups yeah
1686. 1:06:24okay so everyone should have one of
1687. 1:06:25these for their water but not only that
1688. 1:06:28it's also more sustainable right because
1689. 1:06:30plastic bottles make up the majority of
1690. 1:06:34plastic waste in the environment and all
1691. 1:06:37of those are breaking up again into
1692. 1:06:39smaller and smaller microplastics and
  1693. 1:06:41nanoplastics that are basically
  1694. 1:06:44polluting everything
1695. 1:06:45now okay so instead of that plastic
1696. 1:06:48container I had this glass container for
1697. 1:06:50the microwave and for my food is better
1698. 1:06:52perfect okay but what about the lid the
1699. 1:06:53lid has got these little plastic handles
  1700. 1:06:55on it
1701. 1:06:56yeah so what I would do is take the lid
1702. 1:06:58off if you need to heat up your food
1703. 1:06:59okay and what I also do is keep a space
1704. 1:07:02between my food and the lid so it's not
1705. 1:07:04in direct contact with the plastic how'd
1706. 1:07:06you keep it space like just don't fill
1707. 1:07:09it all the way to the brim oh okay just
1708. 1:07:10keep it just keep a little space Okay
  1709. 1:07:13cool so that's that's good it's it's the
1710. 1:07:15contact with the plastic I mean if you
1711. 1:07:17need the container and you need a lid to
  1712. 1:07:19store your
1713. 1:07:20food okay this I mean I have those too
1714. 1:07:23so we'll keep the lid just a thing is
1715. 1:07:25just try to keep your food from touching
1716. 1:07:26it if you can okay um what
1717. 1:07:30about this coffee coffee cup I went to
  1718. 1:07:33you know you go to a Starbucks I'm
1719. 1:07:35shouldn't say you go to a coffee shop
1720. 1:07:36they give you these takeaway coffee cups
1721. 1:07:38which are made of like this sort of
  1722. 1:07:40papery feel good bad
  1723. 1:07:43indifferent get rid of them they're
  1724. 1:07:45terrible so they're basically lined with
1725. 1:07:49plastic and Studies have shown that
1726. 1:07:51within 15 minutes of contact with the
  1727. 1:07:53hot liquid you're getting 25 5,000
1728. 1:07:56microplastic particles in that cup and
  1729. 1:07:59most people some people don't drink
  1730. 1:08:00their coffee in 15 minutes they'll let
1731. 1:08:02it sit longer and so the longer it sits
1732. 1:08:05the more leeching there is and not only
1733. 1:08:06that the lid is plastic so as the hot
1734. 1:08:09liquid is passing through the lid there
1735. 1:08:11could also be leeching of
1736. 1:08:13microplastics that plastic lining also
1737. 1:08:16leeches heavy metals so it's there are
1738. 1:08:19so many issues with that cup you seem
1739. 1:08:22really pissed off with the cup I'm
  1740. 1:08:23actually really they're so pervasive and
  1741. 1:08:26I remember being in Germany about 10 15
1742. 1:08:29years ago maybe something like that and
1743. 1:08:31coffee to go was new and at the time I
1744. 1:08:34come from the US they have been around
1745. 1:08:36forever I was like why is this new I
1746. 1:08:38don't understand coffee to go why is
  1747. 1:08:40that a thing and my husband said it's
1748. 1:08:43because we sit down and drink our coffee
1749. 1:08:46out of a mug we don't take it to go so
1750. 1:08:48this is like appealing to tourists but
1751. 1:08:52what's wrong with coffee to go is it the
1752. 1:08:53container they it's the container so if
1753. 1:08:55you bring your own container Starbucks
1754. 1:08:57will fill it up or if you bring your own
1755. 1:08:59container some shops will fill it up for
1756. 1:09:01you and they you they might even knock
1757. 1:09:03off 10 cents because you brought your
1758. 1:09:05own container so I'd have to bring
1759. 1:09:06something like I guess like this which
1760. 1:09:08is a steel right with a little glass lid
  1761. 1:09:13right okay so okay and it's a plastic
1762. 1:09:16lid so if you can take the lid off to
  1763. 1:09:19drink but if you can't
1764. 1:09:21again don't stress out over it okay You'
1765. 1:09:25been through some of these things so far
1766. 1:09:27just on the consumables okay fine okay
1767. 1:09:30so um and last question on consumption
1768. 1:09:33stuff is about food and water should I
1769. 1:09:36be filtering my water absolutely
1770. 1:09:39absolutely if you live in an area where
1771. 1:09:41water has been floridated how do I know
1772. 1:09:44you've got to check the water report
1773. 1:09:46most municipalities have water reports
1774. 1:09:48and if not you can go to the ewg the
  1775. 1:09:51environmental working group they have a
1776. 1:09:53water report database that you can check
1777. 1:09:55so just type in your ZIP code of where
1778. 1:09:58you live and it'll tell you what
1779. 1:09:59contaminants are found and which ones
1780. 1:10:01exceed safe limits and it's very helpful
1781. 1:10:04to know what if I get these kind of like
1782. 1:10:06you know these little plastic um water
1783. 1:10:09filter systems you can get where you put
1784. 1:10:11it in the fridge you pour the water in
1785. 1:10:12and then you put like a little filter
1786. 1:10:14thing in you replace it and then you
1787. 1:10:16pour it in are those good it depends on
1788. 1:10:18what type of filter you have okay some
1789. 1:10:20of the more mainstream lower cost lower
1790. 1:10:23end options do not remove floor chlide
1791. 1:10:25number one and they don't filter nearly
  1792. 1:10:27enough
1793. 1:10:28chemicals tap water is a source of
  1794. 1:10:32hormones
1795. 1:10:33so endocrine disruptors pesticides heavy
1796. 1:10:37metals flu fluoride if it's added to the
  1797. 1:10:40water uh agricultural runoff there's a
1798. 1:10:44bunch of different contaminants in tap
1799. 1:10:46water depending on where you live some
1800. 1:10:48are worse than others and there have
1801. 1:10:50even been tragic instances of lead high
1802. 1:10:55levels of lead because of the lead
1803. 1:10:57piping that water is transported through
1804. 1:10:59so we've got to be careful with the
1805. 1:11:02water that we're using to drink and cook
  1806. 1:11:04with and so what what's a a sort of
1807. 1:11:07lowcost solution to this for people that
1808. 1:11:09are concerned about the water that
1809. 1:11:11they're consuming and their families are
1810. 1:11:12consuming yeah actually there have been
1811. 1:11:14studies showing that you can boil your
1812. 1:11:17water so if you boil your water that can
  1813. 1:11:19actually remove a significant portion of
1814. 1:11:21the microplastic pollutions in there
1815. 1:11:23because of if you've ever noticed at
  1816. 1:11:25after you've boiled water there's sort
1817. 1:11:27of a white crust at the bottom of the
  1818. 1:11:28pot that's actually calcium
1819. 1:11:30calcification and the microplastics get
1820. 1:11:33trapped in that calcified layer but that
1821. 1:11:35still doesn't take care of all the other
1822. 1:11:38chemicals that are found in tap water so
1823. 1:11:40the best option is to filter
1824. 1:11:42it some filters are more accessible and
1825. 1:11:45affordable than others reverse osmosis
1826. 1:11:48removes the most contaminants but it
1827. 1:11:50also requires the most it generates the
1828. 1:11:53most waste water so it isn't the most
1829. 1:11:54effici efficient and it also can remove
1830. 1:11:57beneficial minerals which you then have
1831. 1:11:58to add back in because it's not good to
1832. 1:12:00drink demineralized water over time so
1833. 1:12:03there are different options that you can
1834. 1:12:05you can use but the best option you have
1835. 1:12:08to filter it at some point at some level
1836. 1:12:10depending on where you are so check your
1837. 1:12:12water and look for a filter so carbon
1838. 1:12:14filters are effective for the most part
1839. 1:12:17but you want to check to make sure that
1840. 1:12:19the filter can remove fluoride as well
1841. 1:12:22okay well in the um show notes of
1842. 1:12:23today's episode what I'll ask you to do
1843. 1:12:25is to just help us put together a bit of
1844. 1:12:27a list of things that you approve of um
  1845. 1:12:31relating to the subjects that we've
1846. 1:12:32discussed today just you know some of
1847. 1:12:33the deant stuff that we mentioned um and
1848. 1:12:36also water filter systems and stuff
1849. 1:12:39because I can imagine it can be quite
  1850. 1:12:40confusing for people I I imagine most
1851. 1:12:41people listening they just want they
1852. 1:12:43want to know what the most important
1853. 1:12:45simple things that they can can do to
1854. 1:12:47have the biggest potential impact and
1855. 1:12:48also they're going to be quite costc
1856. 1:12:50conscious as we all are about not
  1857. 1:12:53overspending on things and they don't
1858. 1:12:54have thousands thousands of pounds but
1859. 1:12:56they want to make significant steps
1860. 1:12:57forward um I guess to that point then if
1861. 1:13:01you were to say to someone what are like
1862. 1:13:03the simple free things we can all do or
1863. 1:13:06cheap things cost effective things we
1864. 1:13:08can do as it relates to the our cookware
  1865. 1:13:10things we're
1866. 1:13:11consuming um to make sure that we're
1867. 1:13:13staying as healthy as we possibly can be
1868. 1:13:16first thing is to filter your water yeah
1869. 1:13:18second thing is to get rid of fragrance
  1870. 1:13:21products so you're actually saving money
1871. 1:13:23by not buying that stuff right so if you
1872. 1:13:25can remove that then you're better off
1873. 1:13:28thirdly is to cook at home cooking at
1874. 1:13:30home is also significantly more cost
1875. 1:13:33effective than getting takeout all the
  1876. 1:13:34time and you're also saving on a massive
1877. 1:13:37amount of toxic exposure that way what
1878. 1:13:39about um the types of foods we
1879. 1:13:42buy have I got to just be buying organic
  1880. 1:13:45food if you're able to then it's helpful
1881. 1:13:49but if you can't eating an unprocessed
1882. 1:13:52diet as much as you possibly can hold
1883. 1:13:55Foods single ingredient Foods if you
1884. 1:13:58choose to eat meat fruits and vegetables
1885. 1:14:01things of that nature try to get the
1886. 1:14:04least processed option you possibly can
1887. 1:14:06and cook at home and if you can cook on
1888. 1:14:08stainless steel or cast iron but if
1889. 1:14:11nonstick is all you have that's all
1890. 1:14:13you've got right so just do what you can
1891. 1:14:15with what you've got but try to
1892. 1:14:17eliminate the processed food as much as
1893. 1:14:19you can what about beauty then so I've
1894. 1:14:21got some beauty products here
1895. 1:14:23moisturizers got some eyelin is um this
  1896. 1:14:26is a roll on deant you're probably
1897. 1:14:27familiar with these yeah that looks like
  1898. 1:14:30an anti-perspirant oh an antiperspirant
  1899. 1:14:32oh yeah yeah you're right so that's
  1900. 1:14:33different than deodorant so
  1901. 1:14:34antiperspirants contain aluminum salts
1902. 1:14:36and those physically block sweat ducts
1903. 1:14:38and so what that does over time is it
  1904. 1:14:40prevents you from sweating right that's
  1905. 1:14:41why it's anti-perspirant but the problem
1906. 1:14:43with aluminum is that there have been
1907. 1:14:46links to increased risk of breast cancer
1908. 1:14:48in young girls who use
1909. 1:14:51deodorant because aluminum itself also
1910. 1:14:55acts like an estrogen in the body oh God
1911. 1:14:57it smells strong wow okay so these roll
1912. 1:15:00on Deens that are for anyone that
  1913. 1:15:03doesn't isn't watching it's the one with
1914. 1:15:05the ball on it the little ball thing
1915. 1:15:08that you roll under your armpit the key
1916. 1:15:10is to avoid the anti- pur Sprint if you
1917. 1:15:12can and I know a lot of people have you
1918. 1:15:15know self conern concerned with with
1919. 1:15:18sweating and everything like that but uh
1920. 1:15:20some people online have done armpit
1921. 1:15:23detoxes so with Apple vinegar and
1922. 1:15:25bentonite clay you make a little paste
1923. 1:15:27out of it smear it under your arms and
1924. 1:15:29that can help to pull out some of these
1925. 1:15:32embedded particles in your sweat Ducks
1926. 1:15:35what is the most compelling study that
1927. 1:15:37you heard about as it relates to because
1928. 1:15:39I am always I'm doing this podcast and
1929. 1:15:41reading about this subject matter I am
1930. 1:15:43increasingly concerned about you know
1931. 1:15:45putting things under my armpit for a
1932. 1:15:47number of reasons it's really hot under
  1933. 1:15:48there but then it just feels I don't
1934. 1:15:51know it does then I read this stats
1935. 1:15:53around breast cancer and I thought gosh
1936. 1:15:55I'm it's probably not a good idea to be
1937. 1:15:57like lathering chemicals under my under
1938. 1:15:59my armpit um what is the most compelling
1939. 1:16:02stud you read on this subject that made
1940. 1:16:04you think twice about antiperspirants
1941. 1:16:07yeah it was the increased risk of breast
1942. 1:16:09cancer in young girls that are using
  1943. 1:16:11these underarm antiperspirants what
1944. 1:16:13about these other beauty products then
1945. 1:16:16throw that one away um everyday be
  1946. 1:16:19beauty products I think I don't even
1947. 1:16:20know what these products are I mean that
1948. 1:16:22looks like a foundation makeup that you
1949. 1:16:24would put all over your face so you go
1950. 1:16:26like this yeah okay or a concealer or
1951. 1:16:29something like that to help even out
1952. 1:16:30your skin tone cover up spots right good
1953. 1:16:33so that goes all over your face right so
1954. 1:16:35products that sit on your skin those are
1955. 1:16:37known as leave on products those
  1956. 1:16:39comprise a higher risk than something
1957. 1:16:40you would rinse off like a soap or a
1958. 1:16:42body wash because it's sitting on your
1959. 1:16:44skin so the contact time is longer the
1960. 1:16:47longer something sits on your skin the
1961. 1:16:49longer time it has to penetrate the skin
1962. 1:16:52and get absorbed into your bloodstream
  1963. 1:16:55lipstick is also a high-risk product if
1964. 1:16:57you're using the wrong kind because it's
1965. 1:16:59going on your lips and you're having
  1966. 1:17:01some
1967. 1:17:02ingestion so don't use Foundation no not
  1968. 1:17:06necessarily find a safer foundation so
  1969. 1:17:09avoid avoid the fragrance
1970. 1:17:12foundations smells good this one yeah so
1971. 1:17:15it's got fragrances in there I'm sure
1972. 1:17:17okay because foundations are usually
  1973. 1:17:19made of chemicals right chemicals don't
1974. 1:17:23always smell good so a lot of
1975. 1:17:25manufacturers put fragrance in there to
1976. 1:17:26maskk the odor even like lip balm I had
1977. 1:17:28this conversation with my girlfriend the
1978. 1:17:30other day and she was lathering on her
  1979. 1:17:31lip balm and I was like I don't know if
1980. 1:17:32that's good for you and she was like it
  1981. 1:17:33just smells so good I was like I just I
1982. 1:17:36don't know just do you know I have this
1983. 1:17:38conspiracy theory about lip balm that
1984. 1:17:39I've never shared with anybody which is
1985. 1:17:41my girlfriend applies lip balm all the
1986. 1:17:42time and her lips get dry often whereas
1987. 1:17:46I don't apply lip balm ever any special
  1988. 1:17:49occasions no I'm joking I never apply it
1989. 1:17:51and my lips don't seem to get dry unless
1990. 1:17:52I go on a plane or something but I just
1991. 1:17:54wonder sometimes if these cosmetic
  1992. 1:17:56products are fixing a problem that
  1993. 1:17:59they're
1994. 1:18:00creating yeah I would think so because
1995. 1:18:03if you never touched your face what
1996. 1:18:05would your skin be like right some
1997. 1:18:07people only use water on their face and
1998. 1:18:09I have found personally the more I mess
1999. 1:18:11with my face the more products I use the
2000. 1:18:13more I end up feeling like I need them
2001. 1:18:15because my skin is reacting differently
  2002. 1:18:18so it's I think it's creating an issue
2003. 1:18:20that wasn't there and then comes in and
2004. 1:18:22like oh this is the solution to that
2005. 1:18:23it's brilliant if you think about it
  2006. 1:18:25from a money-making perspective but also
2007. 1:18:27if I'm disrupting your hormones with all
2008. 1:18:28of these chemicals then I'm more likely
2009. 1:18:30to be causing you to have skin flare ups
2010. 1:18:32and skin issues and and probably even
  2011. 1:18:34aging and wrinkles which you're then
2012. 1:18:36going to need to use some of these
2013. 1:18:37cosmetic products to s for right and
2014. 1:18:40then they're going to try and sell you
2015. 1:18:41some other more invasive procedures down
  2016. 1:18:45the line I've seen some people who don't
2017. 1:18:47use skin products at all and have never
2018. 1:18:49used them because of the society they
2019. 1:18:51live in and they have unbelievable
2020. 1:18:53remarkable skin um and they don't have
2021. 1:18:55the flareups and all these kinds of
2022. 1:18:57things that we have over here so it's
2023. 1:18:59I've always been pretty dubious I think
  2024. 1:19:01I'm a bit of like an evolutionist I
2025. 1:19:02don't know if that even is a thing but
2026. 1:19:04just someone who has much more faith in
2027. 1:19:06my my body's natural systems for dealing
2028. 1:19:09with things than the modern world would
  2029. 1:19:11lead us to believe like I don't I know
2030. 1:19:14that we live in an unnatural world right
2031. 1:19:16so there are some things that we need I
2032. 1:19:17live in you know we're indoors all day
2033. 1:19:19so I probably should be taking some
2034. 1:19:21vitamin D for example but outside of
2035. 1:19:23that I just don't buy that we need all
2036. 1:19:25of these products like you know shampoos
2037. 1:19:27and conditioners and what do you think
2038. 1:19:29of shampoos I've got shampoo brand here
2039. 1:19:32um which I just got off the shelf in the
  2040. 1:19:33local shop a shampoo's okay yeah again
2041. 1:19:37it's it depends on what the ingredients
2042. 1:19:39are right most shampoos are heavily
  2043. 1:19:41fragran and heavily
2044. 1:19:42scented but if you look you'll find some
  2045. 1:19:45that aren't smells
2046. 1:19:48delicious yeah okay and it's very highly
2047. 1:19:51likely that you can become addicted to
2048. 1:19:53lip balm and addicted to scent I was
2049. 1:19:57you're addicted to lip balm yeah like
2050. 1:19:58you said The more you apply the more you
2051. 1:20:00need it and then you just keep applying
  2052. 1:20:02it so it's every 10 or 15 minutes it
2053. 1:20:04felt like at some point and I was using
2054. 1:20:06a very heavily scented fragrance lip
2055. 1:20:08balm when I was a teenager it just was
2056. 1:20:11trendy at school what scent do you have
2057. 1:20:13what flavor do you have and everyone was
2058. 1:20:16doing it so it just became a thing what
2059. 1:20:19about this this is a um this is a tampon
  2060. 1:20:23what about tampons I had a conversation
  2061. 1:20:25on this podcast with a a lady who had a
2062. 1:20:28toxic reaction to a tampon and lost both
  2063. 1:20:31of her
2064. 1:20:31legs um because of that what's your
2065. 1:20:35thoughts on menstrual products generally
  2066. 1:20:38tampons period
2067. 1:20:40pads menstrual products contain some of
2068. 1:20:43the worst chemicals that should never be
2069. 1:20:46in direct contact with your reproductive
2070. 1:20:49tissues with your vaginal Canal they
2071. 1:20:52should just should not be there things
  2072. 1:20:54like
  2073. 1:20:55Benzene there's heavy metals in tampons
2074. 1:20:58actually there was a study showing that
2075. 1:21:00women who use tampons had higher levels
2076. 1:21:01of heavy metals in their body we don't
2077. 1:21:04need those down there and fragrances
2078. 1:21:07again with the phades they're also found
2079. 1:21:10in tampons a lot of menstrual products
2080. 1:21:14contain scent maybe that one doesn't but
  2081. 1:21:15there's a lot that do what's the
  2082. 1:21:18alternative it's entirely
2083. 1:21:20unnecessary the alternative would be to
2084. 1:21:22use you can you can find organic cotton
2085. 1:21:24tampons tampons are made of cotton right
2086. 1:21:27cotton is one of the most heavily
2087. 1:21:29sprayed crops in the world with
  2088. 1:21:32glyphosate we don't need glyphosate down
2089. 1:21:34there the problem is that the vaginal
  2090. 1:21:36Canal is uded right so it's it's blocked
2091. 1:21:40off it's warm its body temperature and
2092. 1:21:43there's also friction so all of these
2093. 1:21:46factors increase and drive chemical
2094. 1:21:49absorption into the body and you don't
2095. 1:21:51want to be delivering some of these
2096. 1:21:52chemicals directly to your reproductive
  2097. 1:21:55organs you think it's going to have a
  2098. 1:21:57big impact on
2099. 1:21:58fertility I think it could in fact there
2100. 1:22:01are a lot of anecdotal reports anyway of
2101. 1:22:04people saying that when they switched
2102. 1:22:06out their period products and went with
2103. 1:22:07more organic and more sustainable
2104. 1:22:10options that their periods became
2105. 1:22:13easier some people close to me have PCOS
2106. 1:22:16I've also got some friends that have
  2107. 1:22:18endometriosis is there a link between
2108. 1:22:21Fates and sort of you know menstrual
  2109. 1:22:24products
2110. 1:22:25and PCOS and endometriosis in your
2111. 1:22:28opinion yes there is and there is a link
  2112. 1:22:30with past chemicals
  2113. 1:22:32too so these
  2114. 1:22:34xenoestrogens are exacerbating these
2115. 1:22:37conditions because if you think about it
2116. 1:22:39the uterus is an endocrine it's an
  2117. 1:22:41endocrine responsive tissue it's an
2118. 1:22:44hormonally active it responds to
  2119. 1:22:47estrogen you're delivering let's say
2120. 1:22:49phalates through tampons directly down
  2121. 1:22:52there it's going into the circulation
2122. 1:22:54and it bypasses what's known as the
  2123. 1:22:57portal circulation Phase 2
2124. 1:22:58detoxification by the liver so it
  2125. 1:23:01bypasses detoxification so you're
  2126. 1:23:03basically delivering hormonally active
  2127. 1:23:06chemicals directly where you don't want
2128. 1:23:08them to go they cannot be
  2129. 1:23:12detoxified what about my
  2130. 1:23:14clothes you mentioned cotton a second
2131. 1:23:16ago it made me think about the clothes
2132. 1:23:17that I'm wearing um how do I know if the
2133. 1:23:20clothes that I'm wearing are toxin free
2134. 1:23:23are there certain clothes that are an
  2135. 1:23:24aunt that's a really good question
2136. 1:23:27organic cotton is one way of knowing if
2137. 1:23:30your clothes contain pesticides and
2138. 1:23:33certain chemicals that are used in the
2139. 1:23:35farming of cotton but not only that if
2140. 1:23:38your clothes are made out of synthetic
2141. 1:23:40Fiers like polyester nylon and acrylic
  2142. 1:23:43those release microplastics and they've
2143. 1:23:45also been found to contain BPA which is
  2144. 1:23:48an endocrine
2145. 1:23:50disruptor yeah you got you got to check
2146. 1:23:52the tag around the side some sometimes
  2147. 1:23:5595%
  2148. 1:23:58polyester that's a source of
2149. 1:23:59microplastics every time you wash it
2150. 1:24:02every time you move there are
  2151. 1:24:04microplastics breaking off 5%
  2152. 1:24:07spandex that's also
  2153. 1:24:11synthetic so you're basically wearing an
  2154. 1:24:13entirely synthetic
2155. 1:24:15shirt what about the chemicals that I
2156. 1:24:17wash it in I've got some um this is
  2157. 1:24:19where I expose that I've never cleaned a
2158. 1:24:22t-shirt properly in my life sugar
  2159. 1:24:24I've got
  2160. 1:24:27some fabric
  2161. 1:24:30cleaner thing
  2162. 1:24:32here I guess this is probably a source
2163. 1:24:35of toxins I'm getting the hang of this
2164. 1:24:37now toxins in pretty much right you
2165. 1:24:39you've called it out you called it out
  2166. 1:24:40exactly right so if I fragrances if I
2167. 1:24:42wash my clothes in this and then I put
2168. 1:24:45the clothes on I'm exposing myself to
2169. 1:24:47toxins let me see right because it's
2170. 1:24:50it's covering your entire body right
2171. 1:24:51wherever you have the clothing touching
  2172. 1:24:53your skin there's some friction there's
  2173. 1:24:55movement there's body heat there's
  2174. 1:24:58moisture that's increasing chemical
2175. 1:25:00penetration and absorption into your
2176. 1:25:05bloodstream so the solution there is if
2177. 1:25:07you like scented laundry care products
2178. 1:25:10is again to use essential
2179. 1:25:13oils so instead of the drier sheets that
2180. 1:25:15you get at the store those actually just
2181. 1:25:17coat your clothing with some type of
  2182. 1:25:19oily waxy substance that's what makes
  2183. 1:25:20them feel soft they're not actually
2184. 1:25:22softening your clothes they coat your
2185. 1:25:24clothing and so all of that is touching
2186. 1:25:27your skin it's rubbing how much of that
2187. 1:25:29is getting absorbed right so if you can
2188. 1:25:32instead look for wool dryer balls made
2189. 1:25:36out of wool uh people put essential oils
2190. 1:25:39in there and let it run through their
  2191. 1:25:41clothing I am something quite startling
2192. 1:25:44that I read when I was going through all
2193. 1:25:46of your work is that beauty and hair
2194. 1:25:47products marketed to black women often
2195. 1:25:49contain the most toxic ingredients
2196. 1:25:54yes that is known as environmental
  2197. 1:25:56Injustice so that's one of the I would
  2198. 1:26:00say the most
  2199. 1:26:02tragic circumstances that we're facing
  2200. 1:26:05as a society is
2201. 1:26:06that the people who are exposed to the
  2202. 1:26:10most amount of
2203. 1:26:11toxins are lowincome people and people
  2204. 1:26:15in ethnic
2205. 1:26:17groups and so some of these products
2206. 1:26:19that are marketed specifically to black
2207. 1:26:22girls contain some of the worst
  2208. 1:26:25ingredients I have ever seen and I think
  2209. 1:26:28it should be
2210. 1:26:31outlawed like you said the fragrances
2211. 1:26:33the endocrine disruptors these harsh
2212. 1:26:35detergents some for Malahide releasers
2213. 1:26:38for Malahide is a human carcinogen what
2214. 1:26:41place does it have in a beauty and
  2215. 1:26:43personal care
2216. 1:26:44product it doesn't it needs to be
2217. 1:26:47removed there needs to be better
2218. 1:26:49regulations and better protection for
  2219. 1:26:52vulnerable populations
2220. 1:26:55I was um doing some research and I
2221. 1:26:57looked at Harvard health and it said 50%
2222. 1:26:58of products advertised to black women
2223. 1:27:00contain endocrine disruptors which are
2224. 1:27:03those disruptors that are going to
2225. 1:27:04impact their hormones increase their
2226. 1:27:06chance of things like cancer infertility
2227. 1:27:09etc etc compared to roughly 7% that are
2228. 1:27:13advertised to white women and these
  2229. 1:27:16endocrine disruptors can impact
2230. 1:27:17fertility and increase their chance of
2231. 1:27:19getting cancer why why is that why is
  2232. 1:27:21that the case
2233. 1:27:24I think it has to do a lot with the
2234. 1:27:27types of products that certain
2235. 1:27:30demographics would gravitate towards so
2236. 1:27:33depending on your hair type what kind of
  2237. 1:27:36products you might
2238. 1:27:37need there really is no explanation to
2239. 1:27:40why these toxic chemicals are in in
2240. 1:27:43those products in particular in such
  2241. 1:27:45high numbers that's really the problem
2242. 1:27:47is why is it more prevalent for those
2243. 1:27:51populations than others and I think this
  2244. 1:27:53is an
2245. 1:27:56ongoing societal issue of environmental
  2246. 1:28:00Injustice and to a certain extent
  2247. 1:28:03environmental
2248. 1:28:06racism it really is um it really is yeah
2249. 1:28:10you said you said it's a form of racism
  2250. 1:28:12and it's a form of sort of environmental
2251. 1:28:16Injustice do people are people aware of
  2252. 1:28:18this I don't think so I think the vast
2253. 1:28:21majority of people are entirely unaware
2254. 1:28:24of this and studies show it because
2255. 1:28:26there are studies showing that the
2256. 1:28:28earlier you start using cosmetic
2257. 1:28:31products the higher your chance of
2258. 1:28:35coming down with breast cancer and the
2259. 1:28:37people who had the highest
  2260. 1:28:39prevalence were
  2261. 1:28:41africanamerican
  2262. 1:28:44females so it I think it's a combination
2263. 1:28:47of the fact that there is some level of
2264. 1:28:50racism environmental Injustice but also
  2265. 1:28:54a cultural and
2266. 1:28:56societal preference for certain products
2267. 1:28:59so black women are at the highest risk
2268. 1:29:01of getting breast cancer under the age
  2269. 1:29:02of 40
2270. 1:29:06yes what can be done about that do you
2271. 1:29:08think is is this uh something that the
2272. 1:29:10government have to do something about or
2273. 1:29:12is that is it both something that we
2274. 1:29:14have to sort of increase our own public
2275. 1:29:15consciousness of and make better
  2276. 1:29:17choices
2277. 1:29:19um is there an easy solution to fix this
2278. 1:29:23I I think if we wait for the government
  2279. 1:29:25to take action we'll be waiting for a
2280. 1:29:27long time the Cosmetic regulations in
  2281. 1:29:30the United
2282. 1:29:31States were not updated until recently
2283. 1:29:36and before that the last update was when
  2284. 1:29:38they were actually created nearly a
2285. 1:29:39hundred years prior a hundred years had
2286. 1:29:42gone by no change to the Cosmetic
2287. 1:29:44regulations none yet more and more
2288. 1:29:47products are being churned out without
2289. 1:29:49being tested without knowing what the
2290. 1:29:51health effects are and then later on we
2291. 1:29:54see increases in all of these diseases
  2292. 1:29:56that we've been talking about so I think
2293. 1:30:00instead of waiting for the
2294. 1:30:02government my goal and my purpose and my
2295. 1:30:04passion is to empower people with
2296. 1:30:06knowledge and solutions so they can take
2297. 1:30:09steps to protect themselves is there a
2298. 1:30:11funding issue with blackowned businesses
2299. 1:30:14and sort of these black um beauty
2300. 1:30:17products that is causal in all of this
2301. 1:30:19in your opinion I think it really comes
2302. 1:30:21down to whether or not the creators of
2303. 1:30:23the product s are aware of these risks
2304. 1:30:26and whether or not they are able to
  2305. 1:30:29formulate in such a way that they don't
2306. 1:30:31use these types of ingredients and I
2307. 1:30:34think that there has been a push for
  2308. 1:30:36clean
  2309. 1:30:38Beauty blackowned clean Beauty I've seen
2310. 1:30:41it could it get cleaner yes I think so
  2311. 1:30:44so I think it's only a matter of time
2312. 1:30:47before somebody creates it and so I'm
2313. 1:30:50looking forward to that at my company
2314. 1:30:52flight Studio which is part of my bigger
  2315. 1:30:54company flight group we're constantly
2316. 1:30:55looking for ways to build deeper
2317. 1:30:57connections with our audiences whether
  2318. 1:30:59that's a new show a product or a project
  2319. 1:31:01it's why I launched the conversation
  2320. 1:31:03cards I've relied on Shopify before
  2321. 1:31:05who's a sponsor of today's podcast and

2368. 1:32:40opportunity steveen tet checkout there
2369. 1:32:42may not be another one before we start
2370. 1:32:45these podcasts what we always do is we
2371. 1:32:47light some candles and this is one of
  2372. 1:32:48the candles that we
  2373. 1:32:50light um what's you mentioned I think
2374. 1:32:53you mentioned candles earlier on at the
  2375. 1:32:54start of the conversation but what's
2376. 1:32:56your opinion on candles are they safe
2377. 1:32:58smells depend on what type of candle you
  2378. 1:33:00have there's basically a safer
2379. 1:33:02alternative for pretty much any product
2380. 1:33:04that you can think of so I'm not one
2381. 1:33:07that says across the board candles are
  2382. 1:33:10toxic it's very specific conventional
2383. 1:33:13candles paraffin wax scented candles
2384. 1:33:17which is what you'll see in stores the
2385. 1:33:19majority of candles out there are the
  2386. 1:33:21ones that we shouldn't be burning
  2387. 1:33:24so this is a scented
2388. 1:33:25candle it doesn't say what type of wax
  2389. 1:33:28it
2390. 1:33:29is so we can be pretty certain that this
  2391. 1:33:33is a
2392. 1:33:34paraffin wax candle at least using the
2393. 1:33:39precautionary principle we should assume
  2394. 1:33:42that something is guilty before it's
2395. 1:33:43proven innocent so unless we know for
2396. 1:33:46sure that this is not a paraffin wax
  2397. 1:33:47candle I wouldn't light
2398. 1:33:51it so because if I light it then I'm
2399. 1:33:56pushing toxic chemicals into the air
  2400. 1:33:58exactly so conventional
2401. 1:34:00Candles there are five main reasons why
2402. 1:34:03I would not burn a conventional candle
2403. 1:34:05number one is that when you light those
2404. 1:34:07candles they liberate carcinogens like
2405. 1:34:11Benzene toine and formaldahyde but not
2406. 1:34:14only that ultrafine particles ultrafine
2407. 1:34:18particles are some of the most hazardous
2408. 1:34:21substances that you can create in your
  2409. 1:34:23home
2410. 1:34:24so ultra fine particles are tiny
  2411. 1:34:27particles less than 100 microns in
2412. 1:34:29diameter excuse me less than 0.1 microns
  2413. 1:34:32in diameter 100 nanometers invisible to
  2414. 1:34:36the human
2415. 1:34:37eye tiny and these particles have the
2416. 1:34:40ability to as soon as you inhale them
2417. 1:34:43they'll go into your brain they have the
2418. 1:34:45ability to do that they also have the
2419. 1:34:46ability to go as far down into the lung
2420. 1:34:50as one can go all the way down to the
2421. 1:34:53Alvi and down in those microscopic
2422. 1:34:56structures of the lung that's where gas
  2423. 1:34:58exchange happens there's only one cell
2424. 1:35:00layer separating the outside from the
  2425. 1:35:02inside your bloodstream one cell that's
  2426. 1:35:04not pretty much nothing that's pretty
2427. 1:35:06much no separation no protection so if
2428. 1:35:09AN ultrafine particle can get that down
2429. 1:35:11far down into your lungs it's guaranteed
  2430. 1:35:13into your bloodstream it's getting all
  2431. 1:35:15over your body it's causing inflammation
2432. 1:35:18and oxidative stress which are the basis
2433. 1:35:21of many chronic diseases so ultra fine
2434. 1:35:24particles we need to avoid them as much
2435. 1:35:26as possible and so one way is to not
  2436. 1:35:28light a conventional candle number two
  2437. 1:35:32is that they're also releasing volatile
  2438. 1:35:34organic compounds right as I mentioned
  2439. 1:35:36number
  2440. 1:35:37three they contain undisclosed
2441. 1:35:41fragrance and within fragrance there can
2442. 1:35:44be endocrine disruptors carcinogens and
2443. 1:35:46allergens so when you like these candles
2444. 1:35:48you're getting all of these toxins into
2445. 1:35:50your Air number four some of the dyes
2446. 1:35:53that are used used to color candles are
2447. 1:35:55carcinogenic and nobody has any idea is
2448. 1:35:57if you burn them what are the health
2449. 1:36:00effects of burning these carcinogenic
2450. 1:36:02dieses and number five candles are
2451. 1:36:04largely unregulated which means that if
2452. 1:36:07you were to look at that candle and it
  2453. 1:36:09says soy
  2454. 1:36:11blend there can be
2455. 1:36:14paraffin wax in there even though it
2456. 1:36:16says soy blend a lot of people think soy
2457. 1:36:19blend oh it comes from soy it must be
2458. 1:36:21healthier for me so they'll go for that
2459. 1:36:23but if it says soy blend one should
  2460. 1:36:25assume that it's a majority of petroleum
2461. 1:36:27derived paraffin wax with a little bit
  2462. 1:36:30of soy wax in
2463. 1:36:31there because the consumer product
  2464. 1:36:34safety commission which regulates
  2465. 1:36:37candles doesn't look at the ingredients
2466. 1:36:39in the candle they're concerned with the
2467. 1:36:41vessel the container of the candle
  2468. 1:36:43whether or not it's fireproof and
2469. 1:36:45whether or not the lead contains Wick or
  2470. 1:36:47the wick contains
  2471. 1:36:49lead they're not looking at what's in
2472. 1:36:51the wax but Studies have shown that when
2473. 1:36:54you light these candles you are
  2474. 1:36:57liberating a significant number of
  2475. 1:37:00hazardous
  2476. 1:37:02chemicals so
2477. 1:37:05uh we shall use incense instead incense
  2478. 1:37:09is even
2479. 1:37:10worse and I'm sorry to burst your bubble
2480. 1:37:13but incense is used by has been used for
2481. 1:37:16thousands of years but incense as we
2482. 1:37:18know it now is not the same as incense
2483. 1:37:20that was used a thousand years ago they
2484. 1:37:23now contain conin again phades the
2485. 1:37:25endocrine disruptors but also the ultra
2486. 1:37:27fine particles and Studies have shown
2487. 1:37:29that incense creates more ultrafine
2488. 1:37:32particles in pollutants than cigarette
  2489. 1:37:34smoke there's an increased risk of
2490. 1:37:36cancer because these ultrafine particles
2491. 1:37:39are damaging DNA damaged DNA leads to
2492. 1:37:42mutations mutations can lead to cancer
2493. 1:37:45there's an increased incidence of cancer
2494. 1:37:48in Temple workers so people who are
2495. 1:37:50around incense for hours upon hours at a
2496. 1:37:53time there's an increased risk of cancer
2497. 1:37:55not only that there's an increased risk
  2498. 1:37:57of cancer almost
2499. 1:37:59threefold in children whose parents
  2500. 1:38:01burned incense in the
2501. 1:38:04home okay W okay so no incense my house
2502. 1:38:07is going to stink well you can use
2503. 1:38:10there's different candles that you can
2504. 1:38:11use so based on my research I looked I
2505. 1:38:14was really hellbent on finding what is
2506. 1:38:17the type of candle that has the lowest
2507. 1:38:19emissions the least emissions because
2508. 1:38:21let's let's make it I want to make it
2509. 1:38:23really clear anytime you burn something
  2510. 1:38:25that's not necessarily
2511. 1:38:26healthy but does it mean that you can't
2512. 1:38:28do whatever no if you find a candle that
2513. 1:38:31is low emission like beeswax essential
2514. 1:38:34oils wooden or cotton wicks then that's
2515. 1:38:39a much better alternative than your
2516. 1:38:41conventional paraffin wax scented candle
  2517. 1:38:44brightly
2518. 1:38:45colored one of the things that I guess
2519. 1:38:48is kind of adjacent to this inhaling
  2520. 1:38:50chemicals is vaping it's really
2521. 1:38:52interesting cuz over the last couple of
2522. 1:38:54years um vaping has become more and more
  2523. 1:38:56popular around the world I think
2524. 1:38:57cigarettes have declined and especially
2525. 1:38:59amongst young people more and more
2526. 1:39:00people in my friendship group anyway are
2527. 1:39:02vaping now more than ever what are your
2528. 1:39:04thoughts on vaping is that is that
  2529. 1:39:07harmful
  2530. 1:39:08yes
2531. 1:39:10vaping vaping fluid liquid is a chemical
2532. 1:39:14mixture that you are inhaling and these
2533. 1:39:17chemicals have not been tested for
  2534. 1:39:19inhalation
2535. 1:39:20safety namely the flavors and the
  2536. 1:39:24fragrances that are used
2537. 1:39:26specifically the flavors have not been
  2538. 1:39:29tested for inhalation because they're
2539. 1:39:30intended for oral ingestion to be eaten
  2540. 1:39:33so they're not tested for inhalation
2541. 1:39:35safety I used to work in a flavor and
2542. 1:39:38fragrance company and that was one of
2543. 1:39:40the biggest issues was that people were
2544. 1:39:42putting these chemicals that were not
2545. 1:39:45tested into these Vapes and the health
2546. 1:39:48effects are unknown but now that's been
2547. 1:39:5010 15 years we know that vaping is not
  2548. 1:39:55healthy shisha you like a hookah I guess
2549. 1:39:59you call it a hookah in America I mean
2550. 1:40:01that's even worse isn't it there is also
2551. 1:40:05a lot of risk associated with with hook
2552. 1:40:07I did it earlier and it was like it said
2553. 1:40:09it was the equivalent of 100 cigarettes
2554. 1:40:11having a shisha which is um annoying
2555. 1:40:14because from time to time when I'm in
2556. 1:40:16the Middle East I'll go to one of these
2557. 1:40:17Shisha bars whatever with some of my
  2558. 1:40:18friends but when I read that it's
  2559. 1:40:20equivalent to like 100 cigarettes I
  2560. 1:40:21thought I'm never doing that again it's
2561. 1:40:23just really not worth it um and speaking
2562. 1:40:26of being in the Middle East and these
2563. 1:40:28sort of big builtup cities one of the
  2564. 1:40:29things I've thought a lot about more
2565. 1:40:31recently is air quality air quality both
2566. 1:40:34indoors and Outdoors what do I need to
2567. 1:40:36know about air quality indoors and
2568. 1:40:37Outdoors air quality indoors can be up
2569. 1:40:41to five times worse than air quality
2570. 1:40:43outside which shocks a lot of people
2571. 1:40:46that stat comes from the Environmental
2572. 1:40:48Protection Agency the EPA the reason
2573. 1:40:51being is that people people are not
2574. 1:40:54adequately ventilating their homes and
2575. 1:40:57we're doing things like cooking cooking
2576. 1:40:59generates particulate matter too but do
2577. 1:41:01we need to stop cooking no but we need
  2578. 1:41:04to prioritize what's important and
2579. 1:41:06what's not important burning candles how
2580. 1:41:08important is that to you make sure
  2581. 1:41:11you're choosing a better candle make
  2582. 1:41:13sure you're opening the windows indoor
2583. 1:41:15air is absolutely imperative if you want
2584. 1:41:19to improve your health you have to clean
2585. 1:41:20up your indoor air keep my shoes at the
  2586. 1:41:22door
2587. 1:41:23I heard you say that
2588. 1:41:25before this shocks a lot of people but
2589. 1:41:27there are simple ways to improve your
2590. 1:41:31indoor air quality and one of them is
2591. 1:41:33taking off your shoes not wearing your
2592. 1:41:35outside shoes in your home that doesn't
2593. 1:41:37mean you have to go barefoot you can
2594. 1:41:39wear slippers you can wear other shoes
2595. 1:41:41that are specifically meant to stay
  2596. 1:41:42indoors and that's because shoe souls
2597. 1:41:45are vectors for feal material poop
2598. 1:41:49pathogenic bacteria and viruses heavy
  2599. 1:41:51metals industrial chemicals
2600. 1:41:53pesticides things that are outside
2601. 1:41:56should stay outside but didn't we used
2602. 1:41:58to live outside as a species right but
2603. 1:42:00when we lived outside there weren't all
2604. 1:42:02these cars and factories that were
2605. 1:42:05spewing all of this exhaust all over the
2606. 1:42:08place dust our house on a regular basis
2607. 1:42:10you said as well Hoover sweep more
2608. 1:42:13regularly and you said keep plants in
2609. 1:42:15the house plants yeah yeah indoor plants
2610. 1:42:18make sure that if you have indoor plants
2611. 1:42:20they can be really beneficial for
2612. 1:42:22well-being they can help to purify the
2613. 1:42:24air to some extent but they can also
2614. 1:42:26Harbor mold in the soil so just make
2615. 1:42:28sure check your house plants for mold
2616. 1:42:31what do does humidity of my house matter
2617. 1:42:33because a lot of people are getting
2618. 1:42:34these dehumidifiers in their house now
2619. 1:42:36yeah humidity can increase the growth of
2620. 1:42:39mold and mold is extremely toxic so you
2621. 1:42:42want low humidity yes you want to keep
2622. 1:42:44your humidity in you know a steady range
2623. 1:42:47so have one of those little humidity
  2624. 1:42:49monitors they're just a couple dollars
2625. 1:42:51you can find them at almost any store
2626. 1:42:53and try to keep your humidity um you
2627. 1:42:56know on the lower end we don't want it
2628. 1:42:58necessarily too high because then that
2629. 1:43:01will promote mold growth so what about
2630. 1:43:03seasons is are there particular seasons
2631. 1:43:05where our houses become more and more
2632. 1:43:07toxic definitely during the colder
  2633. 1:43:09months people don't open their Windows
2634. 1:43:11enough some of us are lighting more
2635. 1:43:14candles some people like to light wood
2636. 1:43:17and burn wood fireplaces and stoves
2637. 1:43:20what's wrong with that those create the
2638. 1:43:22most ultrafine particles that you can
2639. 1:43:24imagine in your home these uh ultrafine
  2640. 1:43:27particles nitrogen dioxide polycylic
2641. 1:43:29aromatic hydrocarbons these are all
2642. 1:43:31carcinogens they are created when you
2643. 1:43:33burn things and burning wood in your
2644. 1:43:36home is one of the worst things that you
2645. 1:43:38can do if you can avoid it if you don't
2646. 1:43:40need it to survive consider something
  2647. 1:43:42else but I've got a chimney right it
2648. 1:43:44doesn't always stay in there it doesn't
2649. 1:43:46only go up it can come
2650. 1:43:48out so how do I so a better way to keep
2651. 1:43:51my home is just by doing like the you
2652. 1:43:53know the central heating the hot water
2653. 1:43:55central heating yeah underfloor heating
2654. 1:43:57right but make sure you open the windows
2655. 1:44:00on a regular basis too because you want
2656. 1:44:02to exhaust the old stale air and you
2657. 1:44:05want to replace it with fresh air so
2658. 1:44:07aside from people who live near a busy
2659. 1:44:11highway most people should be able to
2660. 1:44:14open their Windows even in cold months
  2661. 1:44:17in Germany there's a a practice called
2662. 1:44:20Luft lufton where you open the windows
2663. 1:44:23even in the dead of winter and it lets
2664. 1:44:26in fresh air it refreshes the stale air
2665. 1:44:28and it makes such a huge difference on
2666. 1:44:31our health I was reading about indoor
  2667. 1:44:33air pollution and there's some some
2668. 1:44:35research done by the World Health
2669. 1:44:36Organization that says household air
  2670. 1:44:38pollution was responsible for 3.2
2671. 1:44:41million Global deaths per year this is
2672. 1:44:44because household pollution can cause
2673. 1:44:45deadly health problems such as pneumonia
2674. 1:44:48pulmonary disease lung cancer strokes
2675. 1:44:49and cardiovascular disease the combined
2676. 1:44:52effects of outdoor air pollution and
2677. 1:44:54household air pollution are associated
  2678. 1:44:56with 6.7 million Global premature deaths
2679. 1:44:59annually according to the World Health
  2680. 1:45:02Organization I mean it's difficult isn't
2681. 1:45:04it living in cities with so much um
  2682. 1:45:07outdoor pollution as well and there's
2683. 1:45:09not really a solution to that I mean we
2684. 1:45:10could go around wearing like masks or
2685. 1:45:11something all day but it's just not
2686. 1:45:12going to it's not going to be a good way
2687. 1:45:15to live right I mean if you're able to
2688. 1:45:18get an air purifier that can help with
2689. 1:45:20your indoor environment but the key is
2690. 1:45:23to remove the sources of pollution as
2691. 1:45:25much as you can just try not to create
2692. 1:45:28it and then you don't have to spend as
2693. 1:45:30much time trying to clean it up you
  2694. 1:45:33mentioned earlier the body has a
  2695. 1:45:35antioxidant called
2696. 1:45:37glutathione is it possible to increase
2697. 1:45:40my levels of this compound if it's good
2698. 1:45:42for me is there something I can do
2699. 1:45:45there's so much you can do okay there's
2700. 1:45:46so much you can do number one you can
  2701. 1:45:48exercise exercise increases glutathione
2702. 1:45:52it's very simple just exercise move your
2703. 1:45:53body and where is glutathione produced
2704. 1:45:56it's mainly produced in the liver and
2705. 1:45:57kidneys and the third highest amount of
2706. 1:46:00glutathione in the body is in the testes
2707. 1:46:02and the ovaries because it plays a vital
2708. 1:46:05role in protecting our reproductive
2709. 1:46:08organs from toxicity and ensuring
  2710. 1:46:11fertility it's a chemical it is
  2711. 1:46:13technically a chemical it's made out of
2712. 1:46:15three amino acids glutamate cysteine and
2713. 1:46:17Glycine and we all have it everyone has
2714. 1:46:20glutathione some people have more some
2715. 1:46:21people have less it really just depends
2716. 1:46:23on your genetics some people just
2717. 1:46:25genetically make more of it than others
2718. 1:46:27and if I make more of it then my body's
2719. 1:46:29going to be less toxic is that a simple
2720. 1:46:31way of thinking about it yes very
  2721. 1:46:33simplistically right but that that's not
2722. 1:46:35counting your lifestyle okay and what
2723. 1:46:37about my lifestyle could make it worse
2724. 1:46:39and lower what can what can impact my
2725. 1:46:42gluton levels What can make it low the
2726. 1:46:44nonstick cookware the heavily fragranced
2727. 1:46:46products eating ultr processed foods not
2728. 1:46:49exercising so being stagnant not moving
2729. 1:46:52enough that all of that reduces your
2730. 1:46:55glutathione not sleeping well what about
  2731. 1:46:58alcohol alcohol absolutely depletes
2732. 1:47:00glutathione we know that alcohol targets
2733. 1:47:02the liver glutathione detoxifies alcohol
2734. 1:47:06if you don't have enough glutathione you
2735. 1:47:07can't detoxify alcohol alcohol can cause
2736. 1:47:10cancer so if I'm drinking heavily and
2737. 1:47:14I'm also consuming a lot of these other
2738. 1:47:16toxic chemicals because of just my
2739. 1:47:17everyday life then my glutathion is
2740. 1:47:20going to be depleted because it's so
2741. 1:47:22focused on that alcohol detoxifying the
  2742. 1:47:24alcohol that it won't there won't be
2743. 1:47:25enough left to detoxify the rest of my
2744. 1:47:27body is that a simple way to think about
2745. 1:47:28it right and all the other chemicals
2746. 1:47:30that you're being expose you okay so you
2747. 1:47:32want to keep your gluton levels high
2748. 1:47:33right I read that the healthy gluton
2749. 1:47:36levels in an adult is
2750. 1:47:39553 which is 90 milles per liter of
2751. 1:47:41total GL glutathion in their blood
2752. 1:47:47um so I want to I want to increase my
2753. 1:47:49glutathion levels to make sure that I
2754. 1:47:51have a better natural defense to all of
2755. 1:47:53these toxic chemicals in my life I'm
2756. 1:47:55going to start exercising I'm going to
2757. 1:47:57avoid un ultr processed foods I'm going
2758. 1:48:00to eat Whole Foods yes Whole Foods but
2759. 1:48:05specifically sulfur rich foods because
  2760. 1:48:07glutathione contains cysteine which
2761. 1:48:11contains sulfur and sulfur is the part
  2762. 1:48:13of the glutathion molecule that's doing
2763. 1:48:15the work that's protecting us so the
2764. 1:48:18more sulfur you can give your body the
2765. 1:48:20more building blocks it has to make GL
2766. 1:48:23thione so we we eat things like leafy
  2767. 1:48:27greens broccoli cruciferous
2768. 1:48:29vegetables meat eggs dairy can also help
2769. 1:48:34to increase it there's even some studies
2770. 1:48:36showing that if you consume wheight
2771. 1:48:37protein it can help to increase
2772. 1:48:39glutathione by supplying the amino acids
2773. 1:48:41needed to to produce it and matcha green
2774. 1:48:45tea is also a really good source of
  2775. 1:48:48glutathione building blocks but I think
2776. 1:48:51what we need to do is also remove the
2777. 1:48:55chemicals that are depleting our
  2778. 1:48:56glutathione and that's through choosing
2779. 1:48:59better products not stressing as much
2780. 1:49:02and then adding on how can we build and
2781. 1:49:04add more glutathione with the lifestyle
2782. 1:49:06changes making sure you get adequate
2783. 1:49:08sleep if you don't sleep well enough
2784. 1:49:10that's going to impact the amount of
2785. 1:49:11glutathion you have as well
  2786. 1:49:14interesting cigarettes cigarettes
2787. 1:49:17absolutely get rid of cigarettes
  2788. 1:49:18cigarettes deplete glutathion you
  2789. 1:49:21mentioned matcha there I am I'm one of
  2790. 1:49:23the um owners I'm an investor in a a
  2791. 1:49:26matcha company a matcha green tea
  2792. 1:49:29company what's your opinion of I mean
2793. 1:49:31I'm exposing my bias here obviously but
2794. 1:49:33what's your opinion of matcha I think Ma
2795. 1:49:35matcha is amazing if you get the right
2796. 1:49:37type of matcha you want to look for
2797. 1:49:39organically grown matcha look for ones
2798. 1:49:41that are tested for heavy metals because
2799. 1:49:43heavy metals can accumulate in tea
  2800. 1:49:45plants that's just naturally occurring
2801. 1:49:48so you want to look for matcha that's
  2802. 1:49:50been tested and because you're consuming
2803. 1:49:52the entire Leaf it's important to look
2804. 1:49:54for the cleanest matcha you can get but
2805. 1:49:56there are so many benefits to matcha
2806. 1:49:58like the fact that it helps you increase
  2807. 1:49:59glutathione is I'm sold I'm sold on it
2808. 1:50:01do you drink matcha I do but we also
2809. 1:50:04want to avoid not adding Dairy to a
2810. 1:50:06matcha I know that a lot of people like
  2811. 1:50:08to drink matcha lattes but there's
2812. 1:50:10actually studies showing that the casine
2813. 1:50:12protein can decrease the absorption of
2814. 1:50:15some of the beneficial compounds in
2815. 1:50:16matcha so if you can drink it the
2816. 1:50:18traditional way in Japan is just water
2817. 1:50:21no sugar nothing just Macha and water
2818. 1:50:24the company I'm referring to are um
  2819. 1:50:27obviously I've got to disclose my
2820. 1:50:29there's probably probably got to say
2821. 1:50:30hashtag ad hashtag sponsored whatever um
  2822. 1:50:33I'm an investor in a company it's called
  2823. 1:50:34perfect Ted and it's absolutely exploded
2824. 1:50:36in the UK I spoke to them this morning
2825. 1:50:38actually and they told me that their
2826. 1:50:40sales have increased 5x since last year
2827. 1:50:44because I think people are looking to
2828. 1:50:45shift away from some of the canned
  2829. 1:50:48Energy Products and there's a lot of
2830. 1:50:50sort of energy benefits with mat
2831. 1:50:53and now if you go to like a Joe in the
2832. 1:50:54juice or any of these like blank Street
2833. 1:50:56coffee or or Tesco or whatever you can
2834. 1:50:58find um their products in there and it
  2835. 1:51:00seems to be like there's a bit of a
2836. 1:51:01revolution going on with energy and
2837. 1:51:03matcha which is very very exciting
  2838. 1:51:05because I've for many years I was
  2839. 1:51:06drinking some I don't want to name any
2840. 1:51:08names but I was drinking some of these
2841. 1:51:09Energy Products that you'll find and um
  2842. 1:51:13it I just felt bad and there's something
2843. 1:51:14about the like energy curve of matcha
  2844. 1:51:16which I I think is better I I feel like
2845. 1:51:18I'm less susceptible to crashes with
  2846. 1:51:21matcha I don't know if there support
  2847. 1:51:22that but it's good to hear that it's
2848. 1:51:23also um it increases my glutathione
2849. 1:51:28levels which will help me have less of a
2850. 1:51:30toxic body yes absolutely because it is
2851. 1:51:32in and of itself a strong antioxidant
  2852. 1:51:35with anti-cancer properties and it can
2853. 1:51:38help to increase the production of
2854. 1:51:41energy in ourselves and so one of the
2855. 1:51:42things that is required to create
2856. 1:51:45glutathione is ATP and a lot of these
  2857. 1:51:48environmental chemicals are targeting
2858. 1:51:50the mitochondria which are the
2859. 1:51:51powerhouses of the cell that make ATP so
  2860. 1:51:54if you're knocking down the energy
2861. 1:51:56center of the cell and it's not able to
2862. 1:51:58make ATP you're not able to detoxify you
2863. 1:52:01you will feel sluggish and over time
2864. 1:52:04diminish the quality of your life what
2865. 1:52:06is the most important thing we we
  2866. 1:52:07haven't spoke about today that you're
2867. 1:52:09most passionate about is there anything
  2868. 1:52:11that we missed
2869. 1:52:12that you think is particularly important
2870. 1:52:14to the many people that are listening
2871. 1:52:17right now I think the one thing that I
2872. 1:52:19want to emphasize more than anything is
2873. 1:52:21to not feel fear chemicals I want there
2874. 1:52:23to be empowerment and not fear because
2875. 1:52:27chemicals are all around us all the time
2876. 1:52:29whether or not you're aware of it but
2877. 1:52:31not everything is going to kill us so
2878. 1:52:33being in a state of confidence and
2879. 1:52:37knowing that hey I've done taken some
2880. 1:52:40very simple steps that I know will have
2881. 1:52:42a big impact on my life in the long term
2882. 1:52:44that's what I want everyone to walk away
2883. 1:52:48with I'm just thinking about the simple
  2884. 1:52:50changes that I can make immediately I
2885. 1:52:52think the the big things that I have as
2886. 1:52:54takeaways are get rid of the
  2887. 1:52:55antiperspirants that I've been using get
2888. 1:52:57rid of the doents that I've been using
  2889. 1:52:59transition away from the non-stick pans
  2890. 1:53:02stop consuming
  2891. 1:53:04anything
  2892. 1:53:06plastic if it's especially if it's been
2893. 1:53:08heated so like plastic cups from coffee
2894. 1:53:11shops and plastic trays that you
2895. 1:53:12microwave things in um my water you said
2896. 1:53:16that was really critical yeah um air
  2897. 1:53:19quality air quality it's quite difficult
2898. 1:53:21to do something about air quality but I
2899. 1:53:22guess the simple thing is to open the
2900. 1:53:23windows and doors more often clean the
2901. 1:53:26house keep the shoes at the
2902. 1:53:28door get rid of the scented and
2903. 1:53:30fragrance products the scented plugins
2904. 1:53:32the air fresheners I just thinking about
2905. 1:53:34my dog I was like you know I do love my
2906. 1:53:36dog but I don't want to be to what what
2907. 1:53:39what's your thoughts on pets well pets
2908. 1:53:42can actually increase the amount of
2909. 1:53:44pollutants in your air but again if
2910. 1:53:45you're cleaning your home on a regular
  2911. 1:53:47basis it's not a problem there's so many
2912. 1:53:49benefits to having pets and cleaning the
2913. 1:53:50pets as well yeah yeah so maybe consider
2914. 1:53:53wiping off their paws when they come
2915. 1:53:55back in from a walk is there anything
  2916. 1:53:57else that you're you're working on at
2917. 1:53:58the moment or any research that you're
  2918. 1:54:00particularly curious about any
2919. 1:54:01hypotheses you have that are bubbling
  2920. 1:54:04away in your mind
2921. 1:54:06about toxins in our environment that
2922. 1:54:09you're yet to maybe share with the
2923. 1:54:12world I'm waiting to find out more about
2924. 1:54:16microplastics and the diseases that are
  2925. 1:54:18associated with microplastics I think
  2926. 1:54:20that is the next
2927. 1:54:22emerging toxin of the year and I think
2928. 1:54:25more awareness needs to be brought
2929. 1:54:26around microplastics and just more
  2930. 1:54:28research is urgently needed it's I think
2931. 1:54:31yeah you make a really good point that
2932. 1:54:32none of us are ever going to reach
  2933. 1:54:33Perfection and that shouldn't
2934. 1:54:34necessarily be the goal but the a worthy
2935. 1:54:36goal and a goal that we can all aim for
2936. 1:54:38is just to be better in some way as it
2937. 1:54:40relates to um our environment to improve
2938. 1:54:42our environment in even small ways and
  2939. 1:54:44even the small improvements as you've
2940. 1:54:46said when you talked about the dose um
2941. 1:54:50and you talked about uh how these things
2942. 1:54:53compound in our bodies over time even
2943. 1:54:55small improvements made today can have
2944. 1:54:57big impacts over the long term and so
2945. 1:55:00small improvements small things that we
2946. 1:55:01can change and not getting bogged down
2947. 1:55:03because our life and our environment is
2948. 1:55:05so full of toxins and it's always going
  2949. 1:55:06to be really there's not a scenario
2950. 1:55:08we're going to live in where it's not
2951. 1:55:09the case but small things we can do can
2952. 1:55:12have big imp impacts and as you said you
2953. 1:55:14youve made changes to your life and it
2954. 1:55:16it's been the cause or fact of you
2955. 1:55:17having a family which is which is which
  2956. 1:55:19is a beautiful thing um we have a
2957. 1:55:21closing traditional on this podcast
2958. 1:55:22where the last guest leaves a question
2959. 1:55:23for the next guest not knowing who
2960. 1:55:25they're leaving it for the question
2961. 1:55:26that's been left for you is if you could
2962. 1:55:29solve any problem in the world but only
2963. 1:55:31one problem what would it be the problem
  2964. 1:55:34of toxins that's too easy isn't it
2965. 1:55:37predictable that's too easy of course it
2966. 1:55:39would be toxins hands down immediately
2967. 1:55:41if I could just remove all of these
2968. 1:55:44toxic chemicals from our environment and
2969. 1:55:46just eliminate them not send them into
2970. 1:55:48outer space but just remove them from
2971. 1:55:50the face of the Earth and just have them
2972. 1:55:52cease to exist that would be the most
  2973. 1:55:54amazing achievement I could ever imagine
2974. 1:55:57and What would life be like in such a
2975. 1:56:00world I imagine it to be like a Utopia
  2976. 1:56:03people aren't sick people aren't ill
2977. 1:56:05people are well and happy and thriving
  2978. 1:56:09and just radiating radiant that's how I
2979. 1:56:11see it Dr yon burkart where can people
2980. 1:56:14find you if they want to learn more
2981. 1:56:15about your work what's the best place
2982. 1:56:17for them to to go to get um yeah more
  2983. 1:56:20information I have a website Dr bart.com
2984. 1:56:23I also have a newsletter that I send out
2985. 1:56:27called Low talkx talks and you can also
2986. 1:56:29find me on Instagram at Dr Ivon burkart
  2987. 1:56:32and I also have a YouTube channel where
2988. 1:56:34I love to do deep Dives and get really
2989. 1:56:37really geeky and nerd out on one Topic
2990. 1:56:40at a time okay I'll link all of that
2991. 1:56:42below so everyone can find you um thank
2992. 1:56:44you so much for the work that you do so
  2993. 1:56:46incredibly important and it's so
  2994. 1:56:47incredibly Illuminating because it's God
2995. 1:56:50it's so mad that we um that it's only
2996. 1:56:53recently in the last couple of years
2997. 1:56:54that these conversations have emerged
2998. 1:56:56the things about microplastics and um
2999. 1:56:58endocrine disruptors and the link this
3000. 1:57:01has to fertility our health obesogen all
3001. 1:57:04of these kinds of things it's so crazy
  3002. 1:57:05that this conversation's only emerged in
3003. 1:57:07the last couple of years because growing
3004. 1:57:08up there was no mention of this in my
3005. 1:57:10household there was absolutely no
3006. 1:57:12mention and I just wonder how life could
3007. 1:57:14have been different for myself but also
3008. 1:57:15for so many millions of people all
3009. 1:57:17around the world if we were aware of
3010. 1:57:18this information it's not to say again
3011. 1:57:20that we can we can live perect lives and
3012. 1:57:22that's never the goal it's never my goal
3013. 1:57:24my goal is just to have more access to
3014. 1:57:26information so I can um make small steps
3015. 1:57:29and often low cost steps in the right
3016. 1:57:31direction and if that increases my
3017. 1:57:32probability of having kids which is the
3018. 1:57:33season of life that I'm in now and it
3019. 1:57:35increases the probability that my kids
3020. 1:57:36are healthy um when they grow up then
3021. 1:57:39that is an amazing thing and that is the
  3022. 1:57:42work you're doing you're doing an
3023. 1:57:42amazing thing so thank you so much Dr
3024. 1:57:44ion Bart um I highly recommend everyone
3025. 1:57:46goes and checks out your YouTube channel
3026. 1:57:48it will send you down a really important
3027. 1:57:50Rabbit Hole um because you make really
3028. 1:57:52really accessible great videos on that
3029. 1:57:54channel um so thank you so much for your
3030. 1:57:56time today and thank you for the work
  3031. 1:57:57that you're doing thank
3032. 1:58:02you I'm going to let you into a little
  3033. 1:58:04bit of a secret you're probably going to
3034. 1:58:06think me and my team are a little bit
3035. 1:58:07weird but I can still remember to this
3036. 1:58:08day when jamaa from my team posted on
3037. 1:58:10slack that she changed the scent in this
3038. 1:58:13studio and right after she posted it the
3039. 1:58:15entire office clapped in our slack
3040. 1:58:17Channel and this might sound crazy but
3041. 1:58:18at the Diary of a SEO this is the type
3042. 1:58:20of 1% Improvement we make on our show
