NMN Supplements: Hope vs Hype? (surprising conclusion) — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00this is the most comprehensive review of
- 0:02the anime research that I've ever done
- 0:03to answer the question will enemy
- 0:06supplements radically improve our health
- 0:07or is it just hype and I think most of
- 0:10you will be surprised at the conclusion
- 0:12at the end so nmn stands for
- 0:14nicotinamide mononucleotide and it's a
- 0:17form of vitamin B3 and there's a lot of
- 0:19excitement about the potential that any
- 0:21men may have on human health because of
- 0:23papers such as this one in 2016 where
- 0:26they gave any men to mice over a
- 0:2712-month period and compared it to
- 0:29Placebo and the mice who took in him in
- 0:31they were protected against the
- 0:33age-associated physiological declines so
- 0:36they had enhanced energy metabolism
- 0:38greater physical activity and improved
- 0:40insulin sensitivity so the theory goes
- 0:43that if we take nmn or other forms of
- 0:45vitamin B3 we can support our NAD levels
- 0:48and NAD is crucial to our metabolism it
- 0:51influences many key cellular functions
- 0:53including DNA repair cellulose
- 0:56senescence and immune cell function the
- 0:58trouble is many research papers they
- 0:59postulate that aging is associated with
- 1:02a gradual decline in NAD levels and this
- 1:05decline is linked to numerous
- 1:06age-associated diseases including
- 1:08cognitive decline cancer metabolic
- 1:11disease and Frailty so it's hoped that
- 1:13many of these age-associated diseases
- 1:15will be slowed down or even reversed by
- 1:18restoring NAD that's the overall idea
- 1:20but it raises even more questions do NAD
- 1:23levels actually go down as we age does
- 1:26this happen in all tissues is any men
- 1:28directly absorbed and does it support
- 1:30NAD levels in all tissues and what do
- 1:33the current human clinical trials show
- 1:35because here's the thing in February
- 1:372022 a paper was published that took
- 1:39muscle biopsies and compared them
- 1:41between young and old patients what they
- 1:44found is that older adults who didn't
- 1:45exercise they had lower levels of muscle
- 1:48NAD but the older adults who did
- 1:50regularly exercise they had NAD levels
- 1:53roughly the same compared to younger
- 1:54people so it's not obvious that NAD
- 1:56levels decline as we age it might be
- 1:59that through a great lifestyle including
- 2:01a good diet and regular exercise we can
- 2:03maintain youthful NAD levels without
- 2:05supplements particularly because in our
- 2:07cells there's the Selvage pathway so as
- 2:10our NAD is used up for all of those
- 2:12different chemical reactions related to
- 2:14our metabolism that used up NAD can then
- 2:16be recycled so that's the first
- 2:18important point the second one is are
- 2:21any immune supplements actually absorbed
- 2:23and can they help rebuild NAD now in the
- 2:26literature there's a lot of controversy
- 2:27where a fascinating twist has recently
- 2:30been added to the story suggesting that
- 2:32orally administered nicotinamide
- 2:33riboside as well as nmin will almost be
- 2:36fully transformed into nicotinic acid by
- 2:39the gut microbiome so let's back up for
- 2:41a second there are numerous different
- 2:43forms of vitamin B3 so we've got NR
- 2:46nimin nicotinamide and nicotinic acid or
- 2:49niacin and multiple papers have now
- 2:51suggested that if you take nmn
- 2:53supplements or in our supplements
- 2:54they're first converted into nicotinic
- 2:57acid before they're absorbed into the
- 2:59body but this is still extremely
- 3:00controversial if the NR and any men
- 3:03supplements were converted into
- 3:04nicotinic acid we would expect to see
- 3:07patients develop flushing because that's
- 3:09one of the side effects of taking
- 3:11nicotinic acid but this doesn't happen
- 3:13with any men or NR even at doses four to
- 3:16six-fold higher so there's still a lot
- 3:18of unanswered questions about how
- 3:20exactly inimin and in our supplements
- 3:22are absorbed into the human body and
- 3:24reach our cells it gets even murkier
- 3:27when we look at this 2018 paper where
- 3:29they isotopically labeled any Min and NR
- 3:32to see exactly how these supplements are
- 3:34absorbed what they found is that both of
- 3:36these supplements are significantly
- 3:37broken down before they reach our
- 3:39bloodstream to sum up so far then it's
- 3:42not obvious that NAD levels decline as
- 3:44we age and it's not obvious that any men
- 3:46or NR supplements are directly absorbed
- 3:49by the body but moving on to the next
- 3:51Point regardless if any mean is first
- 3:54broken down into a different molecule
- 3:55does it overall still result in Greater
- 3:58NAD levels well with got overwhelming
- 4:00human evidence that yes nmn supplements
- 4:03they do Boost blood in A.D but it's not
- 4:06so much blood in A.D that we're
- 4:07interested in what we want to see is
- 4:09Will these supplements increase muscle
- 4:11NAD or the NAD levels in other tissues
- 4:14in the body and unfortunately to my
- 4:16knowledge we don't have any enemy in
- 4:18human studies to answer this question so
- 4:21we don't know whether nmn supplements
- 4:22will boost muscle in ad but we do have
- 4:25evidence from an NR or nicotinamide
- 4:27riboside human study where over a
- 4:2912-week period the muscle NAD levels
- 4:32remained unchanged which is a very
- 4:34disappointing finding but it's what we
- 4:36would expect if NR and nmn supplements
- 4:39are first broken down before they reach
- 4:41the bloodstream and before they can
- 4:43reach our muscles and it may explain why
- 4:45these supplements have failed to provide
- 4:47any major effect in skeletal muscle
- 4:49metabolism in the different clinical
- 4:51trials performed to the state on healthy
- 4:53obese or elderly patients to make sure
- 4:55that we're still all on the same page
- 4:57it's not obvious that as we age our
- 4:59inner ad levels decline it's not obvious
- 5:02that nmn or NR is directly absorbed into
- 5:04the body and it's unlikely that these
- 5:06supplements directly reach our muscle or
- 5:08boost muscle NAD last year there were a
- 5:11lot of any men human clinical studies
- 5:13that were published and I reviewed each
- 5:15one on my channel as they came out and
- 5:17if you just read the abstracts you'd
- 5:19think that any Min was God's gift to the
- 5:21world but as I went through in the
- 5:23separate videos these studies are small
- 5:25and many of them have got serious
- 5:27methodological issues so it makes
- 5:29drawing any definitive conclusions
- 5:30difficult there's also no convincing
- 5:32evidence for improvements in muscle
- 5:34performance but if we expand our scope
- 5:37and look at research on other forms of
- 5:39vitamin B3 there are some very
- 5:41interesting findings in multiple
- 5:42clinical studies vitamin B3 has been
- 5:45shown to improve signs of aging such as
- 5:47fine lines and wrinkles and it's now
- 5:49recognized in the clinical guidelines
- 5:51for its skin anti-aging effect and given
- 5:54that NAD is Central to our metabolism we
- 5:56want to try and support it during times
- 5:58of stress for example example when
- 6:00vitamin B3 was given to covert patients
- 6:02alongside other supplements the recovery
- 6:04time was a whopping three days faster we
- 6:07can also see that for patients with
- 6:09damaged mitochondria which are the
- 6:11powerhouses of our cells vitamin B3
- 6:13improved muscle strength and helped grow
- 6:15new mitochondria Plus in a large phase 3
- 6:18study of nicotinamide which is also a
- 6:20form of vitamin B3 we can see that it
- 6:23reduced the rates of new non-melanoma
- 6:25skin Cancers and high risk patients and
- 6:28just on the point of cancers because
- 6:29there's a lot of confusion about this on
- 6:31social media it's highly likely based on
- 6:33that paper that we've just gone through
- 6:34that vitamin B3 is protected against new
- 6:38cancers but there is a chance that
- 6:39vitamin B3 may help fuel existing cancer
- 6:42growth coming back to nmin it's highly
- 6:45likely that any Min is not directly
- 6:47absorbed by the body instead it's likely
- 6:49that it's broken down first into
- 6:51nicotinamide and nicotinic acid all of
- 6:54which are forms of vitamin B3 and when
- 6:56we look at the human data on vitamin B3
- 6:58there seems to to be tangible benefits
- 7:01and it's why vitamin B3 is the only
- 7:03vitamin that I make a dose so
- 7:05subscribers of this channel might think
- 7:07that I'm against vitamin B3 because
- 7:09whenever a new paper comes out generally
- 7:11I tear it down because of the
- 7:12methodological issues but I'm actually
- 7:14very optimistic about the role that it
- 7:16will have in human health span and again
- 7:18this is why it's the only vitamin that I
- 7:20make a dose and on the point of dosage
- 7:23the recommended daily intake for vitamin
- 7:25B3 is 16 milligrams and personally I
- 7:28take 50 milligrams of nicotinic acid or
- 7:31niacin so just over three times the
- 7:33recommended daily intake and I use
- 7:35nicotinic acid because it's far cheaper
- 7:37compared to nmn or NR and again any Min
- 7:39or NR they're most likely broken down
- 7:42into nicotinic acid anyway supplement
- 7:44companies who sell enemin they generally
- 7:46sell it at a dose of one gram which is
- 7:49just over 60 times the recommended daily
- 7:51intake so again your health your
- 7:53decision but that's not the dosage that
- 7:55I take the other complicating factor is
- 7:57that the FDA recently banned enemy in
- 7:59supplements because of a company called
- 8:01metrobiotech which Dr Davidson clay
- 8:03co-founded they've developed their own
- 8:05proprietary blend of any men called
- 8:08mib626 now the supplement companies are
- 8:10currently negotiating with the FDA and
- 8:13while this process is ongoing many of
- 8:15them are still selling any men if you do
- 8:17choose to buy any mean I highly
- 8:19recommend that you choose a brand that's
- 8:21regularly third-party tested for Purity
- 8:23for example I've previously done a
- 8:25review of some of the enemy Brands sold
- 8:27on Amazon and many of them don't have
- 8:29any any men in their product at all the
- 8:31three most recognized brands for pure
- 8:33enemin is renewed by science Pro Health
