- 0:01I made a lot of money I made two hundred
- 0:06and fifty thousand dollars from a book
- 0:08and the serial rights which many of you
- 0:10were good enough to purchase also in the
- 0:12practice of law and I'm not claiming I
- 0:14was worth it but apparently former vice
- 0:16presidents or presidents are worth a
- 0:17great deal to law firms and I did work
- 0:19pretty hard but in also in that period I
- 0:22earned between a hundred and two hundred
- 0:25and fifty thousand dollars every year so
- 0:28that when I in 1960 decided to become a
- 0:31candidate for president I decided to
- 0:33clean the decks and to put everything in
- 0:35real estate I sold all my stock for
- 0:38$300,000 that's all I owe I sold my
- 0:41apartment in New York for $300,000 I'm
- 0:43using rough papers here and I had
- 0:45$100,000 coming to me from the law firm
- 0:48and so that's where the money came from
- 0:50let me just say this I want to say this
- 0:53to the television audience I've made my
- 0:55mistakes
- 0:56but in all of my years of public life I
- 0:59have never profited never profited from
- 1:02public service I've earned every cent
- 1:05and in all of my years of public life I
- 1:08have never obstructed justice and I
- 1:11think too that I could say that in my
- 1:14years of public life that I welcome this
- 1:17kind of examination because people have
- 1:19got to know whether or not their
- 1:20presidents a crook well I'm not a crook
- 1:23I earned everything I've got president
