- 0:02ABBY LEE (VOICEOVER): Previously on "Dance Moms."
- 0:04Those two just better back off or Melissa is going to lose it.
- 0:05Abby, I'm sorry to interrupt you,
- 0:07but these people are starting this again,
- 0:09so my kids and I are leaving and we're not going this weekend.
- 0:12I can't believe that she sent a letter to all of us
- 0:15from an attorney.
- 0:16Friends don't sue friends.
- 0:18It's none of their business, and they
- 0:19are causing this trouble.
- 0:21Stop screaming at our kids.
- 0:22OK.
- 0:23ABBY LEE (VOICEOVER): Coming up on "Dance Moms."
- 0:26Uh-oh.
- 0:27[gasp]
- 0:27She just twisted her ankle.
- 0:31As soon as she went down, I was like [gasp]
- 0:33She can't do it.
- 0:34We have to pull her.
- 0:35Everybody else has to learn to adjust.
- 0:37Well, I was looking at the X-rays.
- 0:39It looks like a stress fracture.
- 0:40CHRISTI: She'll have the most attention, the best
- 0:42choreography, and the most private lessons.
- 0:44Stop talking about my daughter.
- 0:46She's nine years old.
- 0:47We're not talking about your daughter.
- 0:48We're talking about what you enable to happen.
- 0:50[THEME - NIKKO LOWE, "LIVING ON THE DANCE FLOOR"]
- 0:52THEME SONG: Get up.
- 0:54Get on the floor.
- 0:56My world is with my girls living on the dance floor.
- 1:02[music playing]
- 1:05Come on girls, let's go.
- 1:08Join the party.
- 1:10So did everybody have a good time in Chicago?
- 1:12Yes.
- 1:14All right, now let's talk about our group dance.
- 1:16I thought it was beautiful.
- 1:18[music playing]
- 1:19(SINGING) I try to [inaudible] can't fight it.
- 1:24ABBY LEE: I thought the costumes looked gorgeous on everybody.
- 1:26I gave everybody a challenge with acting.
- 1:30You all did it.
- 1:31All right, now Maddie, you did a solo this week.
- 1:34I know there were some boys you were worried about,
- 1:36but you beat them.
- 1:38You can't psych yourself out backstage.
- 1:40Understood?
- 1:40Yes.
- 1:42Nia, I watched the trio and I watched you closely.
- 1:45I feel that you were a beat behind.
- 1:47[music playing]
- 1:48(SINGING) I want whatever I when I want it.
- 1:51Whatever I want.
- 1:52It's the difficult technical things
- 1:54that you have trouble with.
- 1:56That's what you need to keep working on.
- 1:58Understood?
- 1:59Yes.
- 2:00We have a lot to do.
- 2:01I'm going to get right to the pyramid.
- 2:03At the bottom of the pyramid.
- 2:06Chloe, you were one of the most advanced dancers sitting
- 2:09in this group but I want more from you.
- 2:11You need a challenge.
- 2:13You need to work up to the next level.
- 2:15Chloe is one of my top dancers, and I have something big coming
- 2:18up.
- 2:19So I put her at the bottom of the pyramid
- 2:20because I need to light a fire under her butt.
- 2:23Remember, there is no I in team, but there is an M and an E,
- 2:28and it's all about me.
- 2:29Understood?
- 2:30All right, moving on.
- 2:33Nia.
- 2:34Nia, that trio, you wanted it.
- 2:37You got in it.
- 2:38Like I said, you have the style and the sass,
- 2:41but the rest of it is a mess.
- 2:43Paige, you did a great job.
- 2:46Did your part.
- 2:47I want more.
- 2:48Abby says she wants more from Paige.
- 2:50Well, you know what?
- 2:50Paige wants more from Abby.
- 2:52She wants to be more than just a background dancer.
- 2:54Next I have Mackenzie.
- 2:58Mackenzie, you continue to improve each week.
- 3:01Every week I come into the studio, you learn a new trick,
- 3:04but I don't want it to all be about your gymnastics.
- 3:06Got it?
- 3:09And Brooke.
- 3:11I thought that your part in the group dance was excellent.
- 3:16Just watch the chin in the chin stand.
- 3:18No more ickies.
- 3:20On top of the pyramid is Maddie.
- 3:23You won the overall high score.
- 3:26You beat Justice.
- 3:27You beat all the boys.
- 3:29Congratulations.
- 3:30[applause]
- 3:32Moving on, I need to talk a little bit about this week.
- 3:36There's going to be a scout from the Joffrey Ballet in Michigan
- 3:41at Energy Dance.
- 3:43He is scouting kids to go to an audition for Joffrey.
- 3:48[gasps]
- 3:50Wonderful.
- 3:51The Joffrey is one of the premiere ballet programs
- 3:54in the country.
- 3:55Its reputation is unparalleled.
- 3:57And it really could give one of them an incredible opportunity.
- 4:01So you need to be your best.
- 4:03You need to represent the Abby Lee Dance Company
- 4:06to the best of your ability.
- 4:07All right.
- 4:09The group number this week is entitled "Nip and Tuck."
- 4:12- Hmm. - We need that.
- 4:14[chuckles]
- 4:15I know that you talk about having some work done.
- 4:18Kelly--
- 4:19What?
- 4:20ABBY LEE: We all know what you want.
- 4:21Boobs?
- 4:22[laughs]
- 4:23[interposing voices]
- 4:27ABBY LEE: You all know that you have beautiful, gorgeous
- 4:29children.
- 4:31So this is a message about our body image.
- 4:34It's a message about people that do have work done.
- 4:38It's kind of eerie.
- 4:39It's kind of dark.
- 4:41I think that we're supposed to be trying to teach our girls
- 4:43to be comfortable in their own skin, not change that skin,
- 4:47so I'm not sure what kind of mixed messages we're sending.
- 4:50We have to trios.
- 4:52I'm splitting the group in half.
- 4:54And the trios will be Mackenzie, Paige, and Nia.
- 5:00You will be doing a high energy jazz routine, incorporating
- 5:04gymnastic tumbling.
- 5:05KELLY: I think Paige feels like she's been downgraded.
- 5:08Paige is used to dancing with Maddie and Chloe.
- 5:11You know, normally you try to dance ahead,
- 5:13and now Abby's bringing her back a step.
- 5:15Then I have Brooke, Maddie, and Chloe.
- 5:18You will be doing a contemporary lyrical routine.
- 5:22Chloe, it's about the trio.
- 5:25Nia, Paige, and Mackenzie finally
- 5:27have their special moment, their trio,
- 5:28and I think that they should have a chance
- 5:30to win on their own.
- 5:32Because when you're putting them against Brooke, Maddie,
- 5:33and Chloe, I mean, it doesn't really
- 5:35seem like that's going to be too much of a fair fight.
- 5:38Brooke, you've never done a trio with these girls,
- 5:40so this is going to be all new for you.
- 5:43Chloe and Maddie will be doing a solo again.
- 5:46I'm happy that Maddie has a lot of dancers
- 5:47this week, being that the Joffrey is going to be here,
- 5:50so she has three chances to be seen on stage.
- 5:52However, it's a lot of pressure for a nine-year-old.
- 5:54I'm excited about going.
- 5:56I had a great time in Chicago.
- 5:59I hope this next trip is just as fun without Cathy from Candy
- 6:03Apple.
- 6:05But I'll tell you what, she's easy to beat.
- 6:07The people at this competition aren't
- 6:10going to be so easy to beat.
- 6:11All right, moms, you can leave.
- 6:12Thank you very much.
- 6:14Girls, spread apart.
- 6:15We're going to do an entrance.
- 6:191, 2, 3, 4.
- 6:22I don't understand why she was at the bottom of the pyramid.
- 6:25I don't.
- 6:26I think that she deserved to be in the second row.
- 6:28MELISSA: I don't know how Kenzie got in the middle,
- 6:30to be honest with you.
- 6:31Gee, Melissa, I'm not really sure
- 6:32why Mackenzie's in the middle of the pyramid.
- 6:34Maybe because you're best friends with Abby?
- 6:36Go.
- 6:37Ba bum.
- 6:38HOLLY: I just hope that Abby gives enough time and attention
- 6:41to the choreography equally for both.
- 6:43Yeah, I agree.
- 6:44I do agree.
- 6:44And I have a feeling that--
- 6:46MELISSA: That won't happen?
- 6:48--the one trio will be just slapped together and the fun,
- 6:50contemporary one probably will be a very thoughtful piece.
- 6:56And I worry about that.
- 6:57And then when she said that there's two solos as well,
- 6:59like there's not enough time to choreograph dances in the way
- 7:03that all five of them should or deserve to be choreographed.
- 7:07HOLLY: Something is going to lose.
- 7:08CHRISTI: Abby has a lot on her plate this week.
- 7:10She is doing a lot of numbers at this competition,
- 7:12and frankly, I don't know if we have enough time
- 7:14to give each of those numbers the attention they deserve.
- 7:17And ultimately, it's going to be the girls who
- 7:19are blamed if they fail.
- 7:20[music playing]
- 7:21(SINGING) Reinvent yourself.
- 7:23ABBY LEE: Down.
- 7:24Down.
- 7:25Here. Down.
- 7:26Down. Here.
- 7:27Ledge. Ledge.
- 7:29Peek.
- 7:30I keep hearing the moms talk about "work"
- 7:32they'd like to have done, you know, to retain their youth.
- 7:36Well, I thought of an idea, "Nip and Tuck."
- 7:39You know, a little here, a little there.
- 7:41So I'm going to do a routine based on that theme,
- 7:45and I cannot wait.
- 7:46I like to do things that keep the audience guessing
- 7:49so that the judges have a renewed interest in the piece.
- 7:53Crawl. Pretty feet.
- 7:54Turn them out.
- 7:56Why is Chloe crawling around like she has no arms?
- 7:58It's "Nip and Tuck."
- 7:59She lost her arms maybe?
- 8:00They cut them off?
- 8:01[laughs]
- 8:03MELISSA: I never worried that my kids can't handle
- 8:05a dance or a concept that Abby has to show them.
- 8:08My girls totally know what liposuction is because I always
- 8:11talk about it.
- 8:12I would love to get it.
- 8:13Well, I'm getting a boob job.
- 8:14Well, good.
- 8:15I thought you wanted to do it before.
- 8:16[interposing voices]
- 8:17Why are you getting a boob job?
- 8:18For my 40th birthday, I thought my husband would get it
- 8:20for me and I thought he would get me my ring.
- 8:22Well, this year I've decided I'm doing both of them for myself.
- 8:25I want boobs because I think I need them to balance out
- 8:28my ass.
- 8:29I used to have nice D's.
- 8:31And then I nursed my kids, all three of my kids,
- 8:33and now I don't have any.
- 8:34So I told my husband--
- 8:35Mine was the opposite.
- 8:36I lost them because I had kids,
- 8:37so he should reimbursed me.
- 8:40[laughs]
- 8:43HOLLY: Return on his investment.
- 8:44Yeah.
- 8:45I gave him three beautiful children.
- 8:46He should give me two boobs.
- 8:48And then if I like them, then I'll get my ass sucked out.
- 8:49[laughs]
- 8:51I know, everybody wants me to do my nose
- 8:52but I wear this thing like a badge of honor.
- 8:54MELISSA: I don't really think our kids know
- 8:56what body image really is.
- 8:57I think Brooke does because Abby tells her all the time she
- 8:59has a big butt, and she constantly throws in her face
- 9:01that Paige has a nice body.
- 9:02You know what I mean?
- 9:04Maybe I'm being naive, but I don't think anybody struggles
- 9:05with body image.
- 9:06I think they all kind of own it.
- 9:07HOLLY: No.
- 9:08I was built like that, you know, like--
- 9:10KELLY: So was I.
- 9:11--super skinny.
- 9:12Yeah, I was, too.
- 9:13Before we needed a nip and a tuck.
- 9:15[music playing]
- 9:19ABBY LEE: More.
- 9:20Give me more.
- 9:21Give me something going to the back.
- 9:23Come on.
- 9:25How far is Highland, Michigan.
- 9:2926 hours. CHRISTI: Yeah.
- 9:30KELLY: Oh god, 28.
- 9:30CHRISTI: On a bus it's 28.
- 9:32KELLY: Is this the trio?
- 9:34CHRISTI: I really wish the two trios weren't competing
- 9:36against each other.
- 9:37HOLLY: I really wish they weren't, either.
- 9:38This week we have two separate trios, aside from the group
- 9:40dance, and it's kind of weird because you have two families
- 9:43that are divided.
- 9:44I don't know why she couldn't have done this trio this week
- 9:47and that trio the next week. KELLY: I agree.
- 9:48CHRISTI: They're going to be disappointed because one
- 9:50of them is going to lose.
- 9:51KELLY: Right.
- 9:52MELISSA: Well, I think we just have to tell her.
- 9:53HOLLY: Look at Nia.
- 9:54ABBY LEE: Push.
- 9:55Push.
- 9:57Uh-oh. [gasp]
- 9:59She just twisted her ankle.
- 10:00Oh my god.
- 10:03Oh my god, Holly.
- 10:15ABBY LEE: Everything seems to be going, well
- 10:16and then the girls get to their second jump.
- 10:18[gasp]
- 10:19She just twisted her ankle.
- 10:20CHRISTI: Oh my god.
- 10:21Nia, boom, lands on her foot and she's down for the count.
- 10:25Oh my god, Holly.
- 10:29Can you stand on it?
- 10:31Nia went down really hard.
- 10:33I know my child has a high tolerance for pain,
- 10:35but she's crying.
- 10:37I know things must be really bad.
- 10:39When I landed on it, my foot kind of twisted.
- 10:42You're doing a straddle.
- 10:42That's the hardest thing to land.
- 10:44How about trying to stand up?
- 10:45Here, use your other leg.
- 10:46Point.
- 10:47Does that hurt?
- 10:48It hurts whenever I point.
- 10:49It hurts whenever you point?
- 10:51Can you circle it?
- 10:54Yeah, but it hurts?
- 10:55Nia has been working really hard this week with the group
- 10:58number, as well as the trio, and an injury like this
- 11:01could be a major setback for her.
- 11:02If it gets worse and she can't do it, we have to pull her.
- 11:06Everybody else has to learn to adjust.
- 11:13Nervous?
- 11:14Your foot's shaking.
- 11:15No.
- 11:16I took Nia to the doctor's office
- 11:17today because I knew that foot had been bothering Nia
- 11:20and I thought better to get it checked out.
- 11:22Better safe than sorry.
- 11:24What's going on with this foot here?
- 11:26Well, it hurts.
- 11:27It hurts?
- 11:28Nia usually has a high tolerance for pain, so usually
- 11:31don't think much of it.
- 11:32She can just dance through a lot of it, but.
- 11:33OK.
- 11:34And never any problems with the foot before this?
- 11:36Never.
- 11:37She's always been fine.
- 11:38Looking at the X-rays, that looks like a stress fracture.
- 11:43You can keep dancing, but I want you to tape your toes here
- 11:46for about three weeks.
- 11:49So I can still do all my tricks?
- 11:52Oh no, not so much.
- 11:53The doctor said it's OK for Nia
- 11:55to dance if she tapes up her foot,
- 11:56but she shouldn't do her tricks.
- 11:58As a mom, this is a really tough decision to make.
- 12:01Nia really wants to dance and she really
- 12:03needs to go all out to impress the Joffrey Ballet scout.
- 12:08[music playing]
- 12:21This week, I'm doing a contemporary dance called
- 12:24"Quiet Voices," and I really love the movement to it.
- 12:28It's kind of awkward.
- 12:29Miss Abby and I have been working really hard on it
- 12:32so I can put my best foot forward for the Joffrey Ballet
- 12:34scout.
- 12:35[MUSIC - SHARON KENNY, "QUIET VIOLENCE"]
- 12:36(SINGING) My song.
- 12:38The questions we ask.
- 12:40ABBY LEE: Maddie's routine is a little bit darker than usual.
- 12:43It's about somebody hearing these voices in their head.
- 12:45She really has to use her emotional connection
- 12:48to the audience, and I'm sure she will.
- 12:517.
- 12:52Breathe.
- 12:528.
- 12:53Slow down.
- 12:541, 2, 3.
- 12:56I really hope and pray that this passion that Maddie
- 12:59has for her dancing continues for the rest of her life.
- 13:03Maddie has this, and that's what you see first.
- 13:08She loves what she's doing, and her emotions tell the story,
- 13:14and that's what you fall in love with when she dances.
- 13:17[music playing]
- 13:23Bravo.
- 13:24[applause]
- 13:29Good girl.
- 13:33Whoo.
- 13:35You're getting paid.
- 13:36You get a raise.
- 13:39This is really tears.
- 13:40Da, da, cross.
- 13:42Don't drop off your right heel.
- 13:44That's not how you finish a turn.
- 13:46Chloe has great lines.
- 13:48She's a great dancer.
- 13:49But she doesn't give me what I want.
- 13:52She wants to be a choreographer.
- 13:53She wants to make it up herself instead of, you know what, kid?
- 13:56There's lots of time for that.
- 13:58Do what I'm telling you to do.
- 14:01Up.
- 14:021, 2, 3.
- 14:04Arc that way, Chloe.
- 14:05Dance, don't just be a stick figure.
- 14:08Chloe is just not focused today.
- 14:09She is stumbling over choreography
- 14:11that she should be picking up like it's second nature.
- 14:19Listen to me.
- 14:20Go out, get a drink of water.
- 14:22Clear your brain.
- 14:23I decided to give Chloe a little break
- 14:25so that she can gather her thoughts,
- 14:27review her choreography, and get her act together.
- 14:31In the meantime, I want Maddie to perform her new solo
- 14:35for my senior company.
- 14:37They need to realize that a little nine-year-old can
- 14:40learn a whole routine and execute it flawlessly
- 14:43in one day.
- 14:44KELLY: Christi, she's running Maddie's solo again.
- 14:47I can't believe Abby interrupted Chloe's solo
- 14:49rehearsal just so Maddie could perform
- 14:51in front of the senior company.
- 14:52I mean, she's not even trying to hide her favoritism anymore.
- 14:55It's a slap in the face to everyone, especially Chloe.
- 14:58It's nice to put all your eggs in one basket.
- 15:00Yeah, OK.
- 15:17[music playing]
- 15:23Abby is trying to turn our kids against your kid,
- 15:28and you let her do it.
- 15:29No, I don't.
- 15:46[applause]
- 15:56She sits there and she watches the dance.
- 15:58She knows what people's strengths and weaknesses are,
- 16:01and she uses that as an advantage for your daughter.
- 16:08Yes.
- 16:09Why don't you ever stand up to Abby, Melissa?
- 16:11You always say that you're her friend,
- 16:14so you should have a different kind of a connection with her.
- 16:16So why don't you ever stick up for the kids?
- 16:18I'm so sick of Christi and Kelly always getting on me
- 16:21because my daughter has a gift.
- 16:23I'm sick of hearing the same thing over and over
- 16:25and over again.
- 16:26I know, but that's the thing.
- 16:27And we're sick of it happening over and over and over.
- 16:30I'll go tell Abby--
- 16:31Then she'll have her featured in the group dance
- 16:32and she'll make sure that she wins all the solos,
- 16:34because she'll have the most attention, the best
- 16:36choreography, and the most private lessons.
- 16:39Stop about talking about my daughter.
- 16:41She's nine years old.
- 16:42We're not talking about your daughter.
- 16:43We're talking what you enable to happen.
- 16:45I'm not talking about your daughter.
- 16:47I'm talking about you.
- 16:48OK, so you're going to stick up for my daughter
- 16:48when Abby's out there?
- 16:49I stick up for Maddie all the time.
- 16:51I stick up for every one of those kids, Melissa.
- 16:52No, you don't.
- 16:53Oh, I absolutely do.
- 16:54Melissa, I tell you all the time.
- 16:56You know what?
- 16:57Your daughter doesn't need me to stick up for her because you
- 16:58have her so far in your back pocket she doesn't need it.
- 17:01I stick up for the kids who need it.
- 17:02I'm just sick and tired of it.
- 17:04I'm not going to stick around in this room
- 17:05and have Christi and Kelly bitch at me for no reason.
- 17:08CHRISTI: You see what she does to my kid and her kid
- 17:10and you don't stick up for them.
- 17:13I am so sick of this.
- 17:15I'm going to sit here.
- 17:16Melissa's in there with Abby?
- 17:18She's going in to tattle on us?
- 17:20You're not allowed to talk to her till after class.
- 17:22We're having a disagreement with Melissa,
- 17:24and this just goes to show how close she is with her.
- 17:26She goes in and talks to her.
- 17:27I don't want to dance here anymore, Maddie.
- 17:29I'm sick of it.
- 17:30Yeah, I'm sick of it.
- 17:32They're always attacking you and me.
- 17:34I mean, it's ridiculous.
- 17:35It's always about Maddie, and Maddie, Maddie, Maddie.
- 17:39Hey, Melissa, we weren't done talking to you.
- 17:41Would you mind coming back like an adult
- 17:43instead of hiding by Abby?
- 17:44MELISSA: I'm not hiding. - You are hiding.
- 17:45MELISSA: Bite my [bleep].
- 17:46I've had enough.
- 17:48I don't even want to be in the same building as these women.
- 17:50I don't like it, either, Melissa, but guess what?
- 17:51This is what it is.
- 17:53MELISSA: I'll make arrangements for Maddie to get home.
- 17:54CHRISTI: As soon as things get ugly, you run and go home.
- 18:04[music playing]
- 18:07I don't know if I'm really that hungry.
- 18:08Oh, I'm starving.
- 18:10[inaudible] Dance moms are almost always hungry.
- 18:12I don't want to have to have a nip and tuck.
- 18:14[laughs]
- 18:16After the big blow-up with Melissa last night, Kelly,
- 18:18Holly, and I decided to go to Mohan's.
- 18:20It's nice to go out with your girlfriends and blow off steam,
- 18:22you know, especially with people who you can commiserate with,
- 18:24who understand exactly where you're coming from.
- 18:26I was just thinking of Abby.
- 18:28What exactly?
- 18:29Like how she sits up at night and dreams up all these themes.
- 18:32Well, she was dreaming big this week.
- 18:34[interposing voices]
- 18:36I think she bit off more than she can chew.
- 18:39The girls work really hard on those dances,
- 18:41and then someone to get shafted.
- 18:43There's going to be something.
- 18:44There's going to be compromise, and it's not
- 18:46going to be a quality dance, because there is no way she has
- 18:49enough creative juices in her brain--
- 18:51Well, we already saw the trio.
- 18:53I know.
- 18:54Maybe she's saving all her creativity for the solos.
- 18:57I try really hard to stay neutral and objective
- 19:00and stay out of the way, but I want Nia to do well
- 19:03for the Joffrey Ballet scout, and I just
- 19:05don't think Abby's giving her enough time or attention.
- 19:07Abby helped Maddie's solo and Chloe has nothing.
- 19:10Why doesn't she think about all the other kids?
- 19:11They don't count.
- 19:12I mean, I keep thinking, like finally someone's
- 19:14going to catch a break. It's not right.
- 19:16No.
- 19:17I feel very defeated.
- 19:18I think Abby spread herself too thin this week.
- 19:20And I think that we all know that she's going to be focusing
- 19:23most of her attention on Maddie because she wants her
- 19:26to impress the Joffrey scout.
- 19:27And then what kills me is Melissa
- 19:29plays the I'm so nice part, and she's the sneakiest, most
- 19:32underhanded person of them all.
- 19:33She's the one who takes music producers out for coffee.
- 19:36She takes the judges out for lunch.
- 19:38Yeah.
- 19:39She sends gifts to every competition in America.
- 19:41Be prepared for this weekend because I'm certain that it's
- 19:44going to be a collaborative effort to do everything
- 19:47possible to make sure that Maddie gets back on top.
- 19:53Girls, one day.
- 19:54[MUSIC - CASSANDRA KUBINSKI, "SOMEBODY TOLD ME"]
- 19:56(SINGING) Somebody told me I'd be fine.
- 19:58ABBY LEE: Maddie, Chloe, and Brooke's trio
- 20:00is called "Somebody Told Me."
- 20:01It's pretty.
- 20:03It's nice.
- 20:04I think any judge would love to see this number on stage.
- 20:09Watch your feet.
- 20:10Sickled feet, Maddie.
- 20:13I really like doing solos, but I'm also
- 20:15doing a trio and a group dance, and it's going to be a lot.
- 20:21Ugh, sloppy, girls.
- 20:27I have no idea what's going on with Maddie.
- 20:29She just seems a little off right now.
- 20:33It's just a mess.
- 20:35You're marking the side aerial.
- 20:36You're sloppy out of every turn.
- 20:39Normally, Miss Abby is tough, but now that the Joffrey Ballet
- 20:43guy is here, she's going to be even tougher.
- 20:46[music playing]
- 20:49Come on, girls.
- 20:51Hello, sir, how are you?
- 20:53We're on our way to Highland, Michigan for the Energy Dance
- 20:56competition.
- 20:57We have a plateful of routines to do today.
- 21:00All the more chances for the Joffrey Ballet scout
- 21:03to see my kids perform.
- 21:04Bus driver, we're going to stop at my house
- 21:07and pick out my dog, OK?
- 21:08Oh, I don't think we can deviate from the route.
- 21:11Oh, yes, we can.
- 21:12I'm the boss.
- 21:13I'm the captain of this ship.
- 21:15- Oh. - Oh.
- 21:17Go, Jim.
- 21:17There you go, Jim.
- 21:19Abby Lee Miller's on the name.
- 21:21That's why you're our favorite bus driver.
- 21:23The bus driver absolutely refuses to stop and pick up
- 21:26Abby's dog, and we just love it, us moms, because when somebody
- 21:31puts Abby in her place, it is just like, love it.
- 21:38ABBY LEE: Oh, come on.
- 21:40Jim, you're killing me.
- 21:42Kelly, can you come here?
- 21:43I bought you a present today.
- 21:45Oh my god.
- 21:45You did not buy me a bra.
- 21:48You idiot.
- 21:48Thank you.
- 21:49I guessed your size.
- 21:51Oh, you guessed right.
- 21:53Look how little it is.
- 21:54[laughs]
- 21:55Oh my god, it looks really little.
- 21:56Typical Melissa.
- 21:58You know, one day she's swearing that she's quitting for good
- 22:00and she's never coming back.
- 22:01The next day, she's handing out gifts.
- 22:03Whack-a-doodle-do.
- 22:04[music playing]
- 22:14Hey.
- 22:15Here we are at the Energy Dance Competition.
- 22:18My girls are going to have to step it up
- 22:20if they want to impress that Joffrey Ballet scout.
- 22:24All right, girls, now listen to me.
- 22:26First we have Maddie's solo and the two trios, then
- 22:30Chloe's solo.
- 22:31Chloe, Maddie, tights, shoes.
- 22:35Yes?
- 22:36Understood?
- 22:37I'm very excited about my solo this week
- 22:40because I love the song, but I'm very tired.
- 22:43Just remember, smooth transitions.
- 22:48[inaudible] happy, pretty.
- 22:51Maddie and Chloe are both doing three dances this week.
- 22:53They're both doing a solo, a trio, and a group number.
- 22:56And frankly, I don't know if Abby has spent enough time
- 22:59with Chloe so that she feels prepared,
- 23:01and I'm really worried.
- 23:03[music playing]
- 23:04[inaudible]
- 23:07Stretch the back of the knee.
- 23:08That's a développé.
- 23:09Lengthen the back of that knee.
- 23:10I don't know what's going on with Maddie today.
- 23:12She is usually cool as a cucumber,
- 23:15but she is prancing around this dressing room
- 23:17in a frenetic state.
- 23:19She needs to calm down and go out there and do what Maddie
- 23:23does--
- 23:23win.
- 23:24Make sure her tights are not sticking out.
- 23:26[crying] What's wrong?
- 23:27What's wrong?
- 23:28What's wrong, Maddie?
- 23:28Something just stabbed me.
- 23:29OK.
- 23:30OK, let go. It's OK.
- 23:32Don't cry, Maddie.
- 23:33Don't.
- 23:34Don't.
- 23:35Don't cry. Let's go.
- 23:36Come here.
- 23:37OK, come on.
- 23:37Come.
- 23:38You keep jabbing her over and over.
- 23:40- No, I don't. - Stop.
- 23:41I'm not jabbing her. I have my finger.
- 23:42Put your hand in here.
- 23:43I have my hand on the pin.
- 23:44Put your hand there.
- 23:45You put your hand there.
- 23:46Walk.
- 23:46I have my hand on the pin.
- 23:48I accidentally stuck Maddie with a pin.
- 23:50She's fine.
- 23:51I just think the stakes are really high this week
- 23:53and she's really getting stressed out.
- 24:00[music playing]
- 24:08I've been working really hard on my solo this week,
- 24:10so I'm not going to let Miss Abby down.
- 24:12ANNOUNCER: Please welcome to the stage
- 24:13Maddie with the solo performance "Quiet Voices."
- 24:17[cheering]
- 24:21[MUSIC - SHARON KENNY, "QUIET VIOLENCE"]
- 24:29(SINGING) you hit me with words you don't say, it still hurts.
- 24:37So I'll hit you back by biting my tongue, and we'll have a war
- 24:47without any volume.
- 24:52I will remember, I'll just remember the sounds
- 24:56we used to make.
- 25:00But memories have no noise.
- 25:03I like watching my big sister dance.
- 25:05I might not be as good as her, but I'm working on it.
- 25:08(SINGING) Memories have no voice.
- 25:13Maddie's solo this week was one of my favorites
- 25:15that she's ever done.
- 25:16She had a lot of feelings, and I was very impressed.
- 25:19I was very happy with her dancing.
- 25:22(SINGING) Voice.
- 25:23Voice.
- 25:25She had the entire audience in the palm of her hand.
- 25:29You could hear a pin drop in that place.
- 25:31And that's what Maddie does.
- 25:33It's here and it's here, because she loves to dance
- 25:38and her home is on the stage.
- 25:50[applause]
- 25:51[cheering]
- 25:56Amazing.
- 25:57I loved it.
- 25:58MADDIE: That was amazing.
- 25:59What did you think?
- 26:02Yes, it was good.
- 26:03This is a kid that could go on to great things.
- 26:06I need to make sure that she's in it for the long haul.
- 26:09The turns were good.
- 26:10Did you hear people coughing?
- 26:12Yeah, that was me.
- 26:13[laughs]
- 26:16I thought Maddie's solo was fabulous,
- 26:17and I really think that it should
- 26:19be because she's the one whom Abbey spends the most
- 26:22time with.
- 26:23[music playing]
- 26:29I'm really excited to do a trio with Maddie and Brooke
- 26:32in front of the Joffrey Ballet scout
- 26:34because Brooke and Maddie are really good dancers,
- 26:37so I think we'll do really good.
- 26:40ANNOUNCER: Please welcome to the stage
- 26:42Brooke, Chloe, and Maddie with the trio performance "Somebody
- 26:45Told Me."
- 26:46[cheering]
- 26:51[MUSIC - CASSANDRA KUBINSKI, "SOMEBODY TOLD ME"]
- 26:53(SINGING) Somebody told me I'd be fine.
- 26:57Shook her head, smiled, and wiped off mine.
- 27:00And so I saw the sight of strength
- 27:04and heard the sounds of healing.
- 27:08I learned to read it like a sign.
- 27:12She was beside me.
- 27:14I was fine.
- 27:20The music's beautiful.
- 27:21The choreography is absolutely beautiful.
- 27:24It's more mature, and I think the girls worked together
- 27:27the entire time.
- 27:28(SINGING) And I'll go on, for I have always more to give,
- 27:34and this I know, 'cause somebody told me so.
- 27:48ANNOUNCER: Very cute, ladies.
- 27:49Great job.
- 27:51Overall, I thought the trio was beautiful,
- 27:54elegant, feminine.
- 27:56They nailed it.
- 28:00I've been icing my foot, but I hope it doesn't hurt while I'm
- 28:03dancing.
- 28:04ANNOUNCER: Please welcome to the stage
- 28:06Mackenzie, Nia, and Paige with a trio performance, "Girlfight."
- 28:10I'm waiting in the crowd for the trio to come on
- 28:13and I'm incredibly worried.
- 28:15I know somewhere in this crowd is a Joffrey ballet scout,
- 28:18and I also know that Nia is not 100%.
- 28:20[music - b.ill, "girl fun"]
- 28:22(SINGING) Uh-uh-uh.
- 28:22Uh-uh-uh.
- 28:25Come on, girls, we're going to have a good time.
- 28:30Uh-uh-uh.
- 28:33Come on, girls, we're going to have a good time.
- 28:39Gotta get my friends on the phone.
- 28:40Tell the girls it's time to party.
- 28:43Gonna find that funky song.
- 28:45Spin around and shake our bodies.
- 28:47Everybody wants a good time.
- 28:49Everybody wants to play.
- 28:51Everybody knows that girls are the only ones that
- 28:56say uh-uh-uh.
- 28:59Come on, girls.
- 29:01Overall, I really think the trio was great this week.
- 29:04It was very age-appropriate, for a change.
- 29:07It was cute, and the girls did some really hard tricks
- 29:10that a lot of girls their age can't do.
- 29:13(SINGING) Uh-uh-uh.
- 29:16I was sort of worried about my foot, but when I hit the stage,
- 29:19I didn't worry about my foot at all.
- 29:22(SINGING) Come on, girls, we're going to have a good time.
- 29:26[cheering]
- 29:33I think the mothers thought that these two trios, being
- 29:36in the same age division, would be a conflict of interest,
- 29:40but it happens all the time.
- 29:42So I wanted to let them do their thing,
- 29:44let them have their moment.
- 29:45I want them to shine.
- 29:47HOLLY: I bet the audience liked it.
- 29:48[cheering]
- 29:49You did perfect.
- 29:51Hey, girls.
- 29:52Good job.
- 29:53I thought it was entertaining.
- 29:54It was exciting.
- 29:55It was fun.
- 29:57There's not a lot of gymnastics on the stage, today
- 29:59so I think they really entertained the audience.
- 30:03What?
- 30:04What jump?
- 30:05Your grand jete?
- 30:06You were good.
- 30:07You have to watch your back foot coming in.
- 30:08Do you have anything else to say for Nia?
- 30:10No, it was good.
- 30:11I thought it was good.
- 30:12You guys want all this big description
- 30:13for a two-minute, 10-second dance.
- 30:15Well, you know, they don't have a whole lot of time
- 30:17on stage, so when they go, it's nice to get some feedback.
- 30:20Well, you'll have to get all those judges of all
- 30:21these competitions that they go to and listen to them.
- 30:24It's incredibly frustrating to sit and watch and not
- 30:29get any feedback, constructive criticism.
- 30:32My child gave her all.
- 30:33She went out there and performed,
- 30:35and she didn't get any type of feedback from Abby.
- 30:38Nia came back from an injury and Abby just did not care.
- 30:41[music playing]
- 30:46ABBY LEE: Listen to the music.
- 30:47Chloe, you're rushing.
- 30:48Chloe's in the dressing room going over her routine,
- 30:50and I'm watching her out of the corner of my eye.
- 30:52She keeps forgetting one part of the number.
- 30:55So I said, Chloe, stop.
- 30:56Let me fix that part and let's do it over and over so you get
- 30:59it in your mind.
- 31:01I saw Chloe starting to really doubt herself in Miami,
- 31:04and now I see it even more.
- 31:06I want her to see that innocent person,
- 31:09and so I would rather be the bitch
- 31:10and protect her and fight for her
- 31:13and let her maintain that innocence.
- 31:15Remember, it's not about winning, OK?
- 31:18It is about you going out there and doing it to the best
- 31:21that you can do it, OK?
- 31:23All right.
- 31:25I love you.
- 31:27Chloe, listen to me.
- 31:28When judges go to break, do not step out on that stage
- 31:30till every judge is seated and has attention on that stage,
- 31:34because they could still be eating or getting their coffee
- 31:37or figure out where the papers are.
- 31:40Do you understand me?
- 31:41Yes.
- 31:42Love you.
- 31:43[music playing]
- 31:48ANNOUNCER: Welcome to the stage Chloe from the Abby Lee Dance
- 31:51Company with the solo performance "Watercolors Fade."
- 31:54[cheering]
- 32:03[MUSIC - APRIL HIGUERA, "WATERCOLORS FADE"]
- 32:09(SINGING) You painted what you wanted to see,
- 32:13a canvas covered with your dreams.
- 32:18The sky was so blue and the sea was green,
- 32:23and I was dancing on your shore.
- 32:27Through your scenery, yeah, I was
- 32:31everything you wanted me to be.
- 32:36When watercolors fade, dreams melt into tears,
- 32:43and tears turn into rain.
- 32:45Will it wash it all away?
- 32:49Does anything remain when watercolors fade?
- 32:57I'm sitting in my seat watching Chloe on stage.
- 32:59She's performing.
- 33:00She looks beautiful.
- 33:02Everything's great.
- 33:03And then here I go, I'm watching her,
- 33:06and here's the part that she kept forgetting
- 33:07in the dressing room.
- 33:08Boom.
- 33:09Forgets it on the part.
- 33:10I mean, come on, kid.
- 33:11What are you doing?
- 33:13Chloe looked horrified when she forgot part of her dance,
- 33:16and I know how important this Joffrey opportunity is to her.
- 33:20And I just want to say to her, Chloe,
- 33:21you are so much better than you think.
- 33:30[music playing]
- 33:31(SINGING) Wash it all away with watercolors.
- 33:37Of all the times for Chloe to forget part of her dance,
- 33:39of course it's when the Joffrey scout is here.
- 33:42I can only hope that he didn't notice.
- 33:45[applause]
- 33:47This is one of the reasons I hate to watch my kids dance.
- 33:50I mean, I'd rather stand out in the hallway and pace.
- 33:53I mean, come on, Chloe.
- 33:54You worked for this.
- 33:55You've earned it.
- 33:56You're getting to do a solo.
- 33:57And you just blow it?
- 34:03Everybody blanks, but you stay on stage.
- 34:06You keep dancing.
- 34:07You figure it out and get back on the music.
- 34:09When Abby's talking to Chloe after she forgot part
- 34:11of her solo, all I'm thinking to myself is, you know, maybe
- 34:14if you gave her the same amount of attention
- 34:16as you do to everyone else, she wouldn't forget.
- 34:18Nia, did you learn something from that?
- 34:21[music playing]
- 34:22(SINGING) [inaudible]
- 34:26There are a lot of circumstances surrounding that.
- 34:29It wasn't just all about Nia.
- 34:30That was a whole other can of worms.
- 34:33Abby's just digging.
- 34:34There's no other reason why Abby needs
- 34:37to comment on Nia forgetting her dance several weeks ago.
- 34:40Nia, just so you know, it's a lot better
- 34:42to do what Chloe did than to just stand there and freeze
- 34:45and run off and cause all the hoopla.
- 34:48To the group. Group.
- 34:49Group.
- 34:50Girls, I'm running the group.
- 34:52Let's go right now.
- 34:54Paige, are you in a diagonal line?
- 34:56I feel that the girls really have to act in this group dance
- 34:59this week.
- 35:00It's not just beautiful hands and beautiful feet.
- 35:03It's more precise.
- 35:04It shows their technique a lot, and it just
- 35:07shows that they have different sides of themselves
- 35:09as a dancer.
- 35:10Count, ladies.
- 35:12Count.
- 35:13Feet.
- 35:13Watch your supporting foot.
- 35:14Don't let it sickle when you turn around.
- 35:16I see air between your insteps on the floor, Paige.
- 35:20As I'm watching the girls run through the dance
- 35:22"Nip and Tuck" in the dressing room,
- 35:24it is obvious they just did not have enough time
- 35:27to really learn that dance.
- 35:30You think they know it well enough?
- 35:32I think legs straight, feet pointed are a given.
- 35:35When they do a side aerial, it should be perfect if you
- 35:39remember the choreography or if you don't.
- 35:41These girls need to understand, when they graduate and leave
- 35:44my studio, the pressure is going to be that much more intense.
- 35:48They need to turn it on right now
- 35:51because the man from the Joffrey Ballet
- 35:53is looking for real dancers.
- 35:55We have one number.
- 35:57HOLLY: Oh my gosh.
- 35:58ABBY LEE: Have fun.
- 35:59Go.
- 36:00[music playing]
- 36:06ANNOUNCER: Please welcome the girls from the Abby Lee Dance
- 36:08Company with the group performance "Nip and Tuck."
- 36:11[cheering]
- 36:14The girls come out, and normally they come out
- 36:16real pretty, but they're coming out like doo, doo, doo, doo.
- 36:19I loved it.
- 36:20It sucks me in.
- 36:25[MUSIC - ROBBIE NEVIL, "REINVENT YOURSELF"]
- 36:26(SINGING) [inaudible] Reinvent yourself to the one
- 36:33that you wanna be.
