New Collagen Human Study Shows Skin Age Reversal! — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00A new human study shows that collagen
- 0:02supplements significantly reduce
- 0:03wrinkles around the eyes after only 12
- 0:06weeks of treatment. Let's dive into the
- 0:08details of the study to see if we can
- 0:10rely on the result. And at the end of
- 0:11the video, I'll share with you how this
- 0:13changes what I do with collagen
- 0:15supplements. The paper starts by
- 0:17outlining that ultraviolet radiation
- 0:18exposure from the sun stimulates the
- 0:20inflammatory response and oxidative
- 0:22stress in human skin, resulting in the
- 0:24degradation of collagen. So, collagen is
- 0:27quite a ropy structure. It keeps
- 0:29everything together. And this breakdown
- 0:30of collagen results in fine to deep
- 0:33wrinkles, also known as skin aging. Now,
- 0:35several experiments and randomized
- 0:37controlled trials have been conducted
- 0:39over the last two decades to determine
- 0:41the impact of collagen supplements on
- 0:43skin health. For example, we've got this
- 0:45meta-analysis that combined 10 separate
- 0:48clinical studies. And the evidence from
- 0:50these studies shows that oral
- 0:52supplements of collagen, they
- 0:53significantly improve skin health.
- 0:55However, many of the existing clinical
- 0:57trials have failed to explain the
- 0:59underlying mechanisms in depth.
- 1:01Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a
- 1:03series of studies to cohesively address
- 1:06the mechanisms of action for the
- 1:07efficacy and safety in humans. The
- 1:10authors hypothesized that
- 1:11supplementation of low molecular weight
- 1:13collagen peptides could improve skin
- 1:15aging by providing a scaffold for the
- 1:18collagen repair and regrowth. So, let's
- 1:20just go back a step for a moment.
- 1:22Collagen are long ropy structures, and
- 1:24our body will struggle to absorb those
- 1:26ropy structures as a supplement. So,
- 1:28collagen peptides are where those long
- 1:30chains of collagen are chopped up into
- 1:32smaller pieces or peptides. Those
- 1:34peptides can then be absorbed. Now, for
- 1:36this study, they looked at low molecular
- 1:39weight collagen peptides. What that
- 1:40means is very small chains of collagen
- 1:43peptides instead of slightly longer
- 1:44ones. So, this study is a randomized
- 1:46controlled study on facial aging in
- 1:48Asian skin after 12 weeks of
- 1:50supplementation with low molecular
- 1:52weight collagen peptides. That's
- 1:54important. All participants were
- 1:56randomly assigned to either take the
- 1:58collagen peptides or a placebo in a
- 2:00one-to-one ratio. One tablet had 500 mg
- 2:04of the collagen peptides, and the
- 2:05participants, they took two tablets
- 2:08twice a day. Now, when doing a skin
- 2:10study like this, it's important that we
- 2:12have objective outcomes. So, what I mean
- 2:14by this is that we don't just simply
- 2:16want to look at the skin with the human
- 2:17eye to make a judgement as to whether
- 2:19the collagen peptides are going to work
- 2:21or not. Ideally, we want photos taken
- 2:23and those photos to be objectively
- 2:25measured by a computer system. And
- 2:27that's exactly what we see in this
- 2:28study, where the authors, they measured
- 2:30the wrinkles around the eyes by using a
- 2:32three-dimensional measuring method. In
- 2:34addition, two separate dermatologists,
- 2:37who didn't know who was in which group,
- 2:39independently evaluated the wrinkles
- 2:41around the eyes to make sure that we've
- 2:43got another objective measurement. A
- 2:45total of 84 people completed the study,
- 2:47and before the study began, there were
- 2:49no significant differences between the
- 2:51two groups. So, we are comparing apples
- 2:53to apples. And before we get into the
- 2:55results, we've now got over 150 patrons
- 2:58who are accelerating their own longevity
- 3:00journey and supporting the rapamycin
- 3:02clinical study. So, thank you all so
- 3:04much for your support. And if you do
- 3:06want to check out this program, make
- 3:07sure to check out the card in the corner
- 3:09or the link in the pinned comment. The
- 3:11authors found that the group who were
- 3:12taking the collagen supplements, they
- 3:14had significantly reduced wrinkles
- 3:15around the eyes, and this reached
- 3:18statistical significance. This is
- 3:20incredibly exciting. We can actually see
- 3:22reversal of wrinkles around the eyes by
- 3:24using collagen supplements. Furthermore,
- 3:27the collagen supplements were well
- 3:28tolerated, and there was no reports of
- 3:30severe adverse events. Now, this paper
- 3:33is interesting because it focused on low
- 3:35molecular weight collagen peptides. So,
- 3:37remember, this is where the collagen is
- 3:39chopped into very short chains. And the
- 3:41authors say that they wanted to focus on
- 3:43the low molecular weight collagen
- 3:44peptides because the high molecular
- 3:46weight collagen peptides, they decompose
- 3:48in the stomach quickly and do not reach
- 3:50the skin. The paper finishes by
- 3:52concluding that in this randomized
- 3:54placebo-controlled clinical trial, it
- 3:56suggests that low molecular weight
- 3:58collagen peptides effectively improve
- 4:00photo-aged and dry skin while showing a
- 4:03favorable safety profile. The current
- 4:05collagen supplements that I use is from
- 4:07a company called Do Not Age, but I don't
- 4:09know if this is a low molecular weight
- 4:11collagen supplement. So, I'll reach out
- 4:13to Do Not Age, and as soon as I hear
- 4:15back from them, I'll update the pinned
- 4:17comment. The other thing I'll mention is
- 4:19that this study it used a very low dose,
- 4:21so only 1 g twice a day. Now, the dose
- 4:24that I take is between 10 to 15 g every
- 4:27day. Personally, I'll still be using
- 4:29that higher dose, but it will be
- 4:30interesting for further studies to
- 4:32evaluate whether there is a dose
- 4:34response, whether we will be seeing
- 4:36further benefits for our skin by taking
- 4:38that higher dose, or whether we can save
- 4:40our money by taking a lower dose. Time
- 4:42will tell. And while we can see from the
- 4:44study that collagen supplements do seem
- 4:46to have incredible benefits for our
- 4:48skin, make sure to check out this next
- 4:50video here on other strategies that we
- 4:52can use to protect our skin and look
- 4:54younger than our age. A massive thank
