Never Act Married in Front of Your Team — Transcript

- 0:00What do you look for in a partner?
- 0:04>> I like a little bit of crazy.
- 0:06Um
- 0:09you know, uh and then you know, there's
- 0:11different price tags, you know, that
- 0:12that are associated and I, you know,
- 0:17Um okay, I'll be honest with you.
- 0:19So,
- 0:21I decided a long time ago that the
- 0:23number one character trait that I wanted
- 0:24in a partner was loyalty.
- 0:26It was the number one thing. I was like,
- 0:27I have I have I've
- 0:29the the path that I want to walk, I'm
- 0:31going to have too many enemies. I'm
- 0:32going to have too many people who want
- 0:33to stab me behind my back, and I need
- 0:35someone who I don't have to look behind
- 0:36me to know if they're there.
- 0:39And so,
- 0:40that's that is for me like that was like
- 0:42my number one, two, and three. And so
- 0:44like I would say like in our
- 0:45relationship, I've never once doubted
- 0:47Leila's loyalty. Like never once.
- 0:49Um and I think a lot of people
- 0:51misunderstand Leila and I's dynamic.
- 0:53Like
- 0:54Leila is like it's funny because people
- 0:56like see us as like a modern-day couple
- 0:58or something like that. But like I feel
- 1:01like we are so traditional in terms of
- 1:03like how we
- 1:04like live.
- 1:05>> I think there's marriage and then
- 1:06there's business and it's
- 1:08different.
- 1:09>> Yeah, like our marriage relationship is
- 1:10super traditional.
- 1:12And then our business relationship is I
- 1:14mean, I guess I don't know. Yeah,
- 1:16modern, I guess. Yeah.
- 1:17Yeah, I mean, we have roles in the
- 1:18company and we both fulfill those roles.
- 1:20>> Yeah.
- 1:20>> And like if if we had zero relationship,
- 1:23the way that we like if we had zero
- 1:24romantic relationship, the way that we
- 1:25work would be the same.
- 1:28>> Yeah, that's fair.
- 1:29>> Which is I mean, yeah, we started
- 1:30working together. And so that like we
- 1:31actually learned that dynamic first. We
- 1:33didn't learn the the romantic side.
- 1:35>> Yeah.
- 1:37Yeah, and interesting for everybody on
- 1:38here is like, you know, something that
- 1:39we made decision is like um when we
- 1:41first started the business together, we
- 1:43said like one of our first mentors
- 1:45I remember he said like
- 1:47act like business partners in front of
- 1:49your team. Like they don't need to see
- 1:50you guys acting all, you know, like
- 1:53husband and wife in front of each other.
- 1:54Like that makes people very
- 1:55uncomfortable. And so a lot of people
- 1:57will say when they see us in content,
- 1:58they're like, "Why aren't you guys like
- 1:59hugging, kissing all together in
- 2:00public?" And it's
- 2:01>> We've learned.
- 2:02>> We've learned not to do that in public.
- 2:04You know, we do save that for private.
- 2:05And so, you also just
- 2:07>> Also, we started we started dating when
- 2:09or we got married when Leila was 23, I
- 2:11just turned 27 or somewhere in there.
- 2:13Um
- 2:15We were kids. And so, we had like adults
- 2:17working for us. And like, we needed to
- 2:18be like extra professional.
- 2:20>> Yeah.
- 2:20>> I would say now because we're a little
- 2:22older, um and we have like a little bit
- 2:24more gravitas than we did then. Like, we
- 2:26can get away with a little bit more.
- 2:27Like,
- 2:28>> get super weird with PDA stuff, though.
- 2:29>> Oh.
- 2:30>> I like I don't know why. It's just like
- 2:31I trained it into myself.
- 2:33>> All right.
- 2:33If you are a business owner and you are
- 2:35not growing as fast as you'd like, I'd
- 2:37like to give you a free gift. So, my
- 2:39team and I put together the $100 million
- 2:41scaling roadmap, which is basically 200
- 2:43hours of us looking over all the
- 2:44portfolio companies we've had and what
- 2:46stages of growth they went through. And
- 2:48more importantly, where they got stuck
- 2:50and how they got past it. And so, we
- 2:51broke it in these 10 stages and we made
- 2:53this little kind of quiz thing where if
- 2:55you put in your business information,
- 2:56it'll tell you where you're at. And the
- 2:58most important part for you, what to do
- 3:00for each of functions of the business
- 3:01across product, marketing, sales,
- 3:02customer success, recruiting, IT, human
- 3:04resources, and finance. And so, no
- 3:06matter what you're struggling with,
- 3:07someone else has already struggled with
- 3:09it and solved it. And so, I'd like to
- 3:11give you this thing absolutely free. You
- 3:12can go to acquisition.com/roadmap,
- 3:14plug in your business information. And
- 3:16if you want us to actually help you
- 3:18deconstruct the business and you're
- 3:19trying to scale, we'd love to help you
- 3:21out. On the thank you page, you can just
- 3:22book a call with my team and we will
- 3:25look at the business, see if we can
- 3:27help. And if we can, we'll invite you
- 3:28out to Vegas and we'll do this in person
- 3:30live.
