NES Godzilla Creepypasta — Transcript

- 0:01When I was a kid, the two things I
- 0:03liked most were Godzilla and NES games.
- 0:06That's why when Godzilla: Monster of
- 0:08Monsters came out, it was like a dream
- 0:10come true. When I finally got the game
- 0:14for my birthday, I played it day and
- 0:16night. Unfortunately, I sold the game a
- 0:20year later, but I recently bought a new
- 0:22NES and after much searching, my friend
- 0:24Billy got a new copy of the game. I was
- 0:29really looking forward to playing it
- 0:31again and honestly it never occurred to
- 0:33me to ask Billy where he got it. So I
- 0:37started the game, nostalgia took me
- 0:39back in time and the eight-bit Godzilla
- 0:42theme flooded my ears, making me smile.
- 0:45I had forgotten how fun it was to break
- 0:47things as Godzilla. It didn't take long
- 0:50before I reached my first boss. My
- 0:53first opponent was Gezora. The most
- 0:56annoying thing while fighting Gezora is
- 0:58that he always pushes you into the
- 0:59corner, hits you with his tentacles,
- 1:01and you can't move until he moves away.
- 1:04The movement doesn't hurt you, but it
- 1:06can paralyze you until the time limit
- 1:08runs out and you have to start the
- 1:10fight from the beginning. Obviously he
- 1:12did it when I fought him, but for some
- 1:15reason this caused the game to glitch
- 1:17and once it did, he didn't stop hitting
- 1:20me with his tentacles. The time limit
- 1:23is supposed to last 40 seconds, but
- 1:25this lasted longer and the graphics
- 1:27started to get weird with small red
- 1:29blocks everywhere. This was very
- 1:33strange, but I didn't think much of it,
- 1:35so I grabbed the cartridge, blew on it
- 1:36a bit, and started again. This time I
- 1:39defeated the bosses without any
- 1:40problems. Then I went to the next
- 1:44planet, Mars. I searched around the
- 1:46board and found something unexpected.
- 1:49Where Baragon was supposed to be, there
- 1:51was Titanosaurus. In the game there
- 1:54were only 10 kaiju and Titanosaurus was
- 1:56not one of them. I tried to advance
- 1:59through the levels as fast as I could
- 2:01so I could see Titanosaurus in action.
- 2:04I fought Gezora again, but this time
- 2:06the glitch happened just as I beat him,
- 2:08making his sprite look like it had been
- 2:10devoured and his eye started appearing
- 2:12all over the screen. I didn't think
- 2:16much of it and started fighting Moguera
- 2:17as if nothing had happened. This time
- 2:20he had a glitch of his own. Moguera was
- 2:23bigger than normal and was also harder
- 2:25to defeat. In the end I managed to
- 2:28defeat him, but when he died another
- 2:30glitch occurred. Suddenly the giant
- 2:32Moguera sprite began to break and fade
- 2:35away. I still don't have the slightest
- 2:37idea what that meant. At this point, I
- 2:40was about to fight Titanosaurus, but I
- 2:42was also worried that those strange
- 2:44glitches would appear again.
- 2:49Surprisingly, Titanosaurus was fine,
- 2:51and even though all the kaiju in this
- 2:53game were the same height, Titanosaurus
- 2:55was slightly taller. The fact that
- 2:58Titanosaurus was taller than Godzilla,
- 3:00just like in the movie, I thought was
- 3:02pretty cool. After a very fun fight
- 3:06against the monster that wasn't in the
- 3:08original game, I destroyed the enemy
- 3:10base and for some strange reason didn't
- 3:12continue to Jupiter as I normally would
- 3:13. Strangely, I ended up in Pathos.
- 3:21Pathos was the same as Jupiter in
- 3:23design, except the board was dark blue
- 3:25instead of green. I didn't think much
- 3:27of it and looked at the other side of
- 3:29the board to see the new monster.
- 3:31Instead of Gezora, it was Biollante.
- 3:34That couldn't be true. Godzilla vs.
- 3:36Biollante didn't come out until 1989
- 3:39and this game was made in 1988. Maybe
- 3:43Toho put Biollante in the game to build
- 3:45hype for the following year's movie,
- 3:47but they changed their minds in the end
- 3:49. I tried to rationalize the game's
- 3:52anomalies somehow, but it was useless.
- 3:55I moved Godzilla to one of the several
- 3:57icons that had been changed and entered
- 3:59the level. The level had blue mountains
- 4:03in the background with a red planet in
- 4:05the sky. There was something strange
- 4:07about the mountains. At first, I
- 4:09thought the glitch had affected them,
- 4:11but it seemed too intentional. I
- 4:13quickly noticed something else about
- 4:15this level. There were no enemies, not
- 4:17even any obstacles, so I finished it
- 4:20very quickly. I tried other levels of
- 4:23the same type to see if enemies
- 4:24appeared, but there were none, so I
- 4:26decided to try the other type of level.
- 4:29I started one of the hive levels and
- 4:31was surprised by a grotesque background
- 4:33of orange eyes with tumors. The only
- 4:36enemies here were these flying monsters
- 4:38that were everywhere. After completing
- 4:41it, I tried to avoid those types of
- 4:43levels if possible. The board was short
- 4:47, so it only took a few minutes to
- 4:49reach a rematch against Moguera and
- 4:50Gezora, but this time the sprites and
- 4:52attack patterns were different. I
- 4:56fought Moguera first. Its replacement
- 4:58was a strange flying machine. It was
- 5:00like fighting Mothra. It attacked by
- 5:03spinning its front tentacle like a
- 5:05screw and fired a beam from its drill.
- 5:08This rare aberration replaced Gezora,
- 5:11becoming quite a challenge. It ran and
- 5:14jumped very quickly and constantly spun
- 5:16its hands, which made it hard to get
- 5:18close. I defeated it using a
- 5:20combination of tail strikes and the
- 5:22atomic breath. I was finally going to
- 5:27fight Titanosaurus, but when I started
- 5:29the battle, he didn't appear and the
- 5:31game simply returned to the map with
- 5:33the Titanosaurus piece gone. Only
- 5:36Biollante was left, so I started the
- 5:38fight. I was surprised when Biollante
- 5:41started the fight in her rose form. She
- 5:44was immobile and used her tentacles to
- 5:46keep me away from her body. As expected
- 5:49, Biollante transformed into her final
- 5:51form after taking enough damage. The
- 5:54battle technique was the same, except
- 5:56now Biollante could move, albeit more
- 5:58slowly than any other monster. The
- 6:01tentacles now did more damage and she
- 6:04could also spit acid. But when I killed
- 6:08Biollante, a new icon appeared,
- 6:10replacing the base. It looked like a
- 6:12red tribal mask. I got chills when I
- 6:15saw it, but since it replaced the base,
- 6:17I assumed it was the only way to leave
- 6:19the path. I moved Godzilla to the icon
- 6:22and started the level. It was a hellish
- 6:25place with no sky and fire in the
- 6:27background. The fire was the most
- 6:29advanced thing I've ever seen on the
- 6:31NES. All the text on the top screen,
- 6:34the score, and the life bar were gone.
- 6:36In their place was a single word in the
- 6:39middle that said, "Run!" My chills
- 6:41intensified. Cautiously, I followed
- 6:44through the level, but there was no one
- 6:46there. I kept going until I started to
- 6:48think. Run. But from what? It was at
- 6:51that moment when I heard a soft roar
- 6:53and saw it. I haven't seen all the
- 7:00Godzilla movies, but I'm pretty sure
- 7:02this thing wasn't in any of them. It
- 7:05must have been something the creators
- 7:07invented. By pure luck, or maybe due to
- 7:10adrenaline, I managed to run fast
- 7:12enough to get away from him. He was
- 7:15running very fast, so much so that if
- 7:17you barely saw him, you were almost
- 7:18certain to die. And when I say die, I
- 7:21mean your monster would die instantly
- 7:23if he touched it. When I returned to
- 7:25the map, I was tempted to turn off the
- 7:27game and pretend this never happened. I
- 7:30thought, "What the hell just happened?"
- 7:32"What will the rest of the game be like
- 7:34?" I just had to beat the mask level
- 7:36with Mothra and I would move on to the
- 7:38next world. But when I moved Mothra to
- 7:40the level, the game registered it as if
- 7:42I had already beaten it. I was quite
- 7:44relieved. I tried to prepare myself for
- 7:46the next world. Trance. I looked at the
- 7:51map to see what the new monster was,
- 7:53and it was Orga. A monster that debuted
- 7:56in a 1999 movie. In a game made in 1988
- 7:59, my theories about Titanosaurus and
- 8:03Biollante were fading away. There was
- 8:05no way this game was made in 1988. My
- 8:10eyes were drawn to a new icon on the
- 8:12map, a question mark. I was very
- 8:15curious to see what it did. From then
- 8:18on, there was one on every map and they
- 8:20were always near the start. When you
- 8:23start one of these levels, a screen
- 8:25like this appears. As you see, there is
- 8:28a question at the top, two yes and no
- 8:31buttons, and a face in the center. The
- 8:33face asks you 12 yes or no questions.
- 8:35When you answer, the question
- 8:37disappears and the face changes its
- 8:39expression. Then it changes back to a
- 8:41neutral expression and asks again.
- 8:43There was no time limit, and no right
- 8:46or wrong answers. The expressions never
- 8:49followed a pattern, nor was the same
- 8:51topic asked more than twice. Here are
- 8:54the face expressions I saw throughout
- 8:56the game. The ones I understood were
- 8:59these. One, neutral; two, angry. Three,
- 9:03sad. Four, happy. Five, sick. Six,
- 9:08maniacal. Seven, surprised. Eight, love
- 9:11. Nine, irritated. 10, confused. 11, in
- 9:16pain. And now these are other faces
- 9:20that also appeared, but I didn't
- 9:21understand them. When the questions
- 9:27started, I wrote them down in a
- 9:28notebook. I'm glad I did. These are the
- 9:32questions. Do you like the game? Answer
- 9:36yes, reaction happy. Are you afraid?
- 9:40Answer yes. Reaction surprised. Are you
- 9:43over 18? Answer. Yes. Reaction weird
- 9:47face. Number five. Do birds have teeth?
- 9:51Answer, no. Reaction: love. Does the
- 9:54moon rotate? Answer yes. Reaction weird
- 9:57face. Number 11. Do you have a job?
- 10:00Answer, yes. Reaction confused. Do you
- 10:03like hurting people? Answer no.
- 10:06Reaction irritated. Is the sun hot?
- 10:09Answer yes. Reaction sad. Do you like
- 10:13dogs? Answer, yes. Reaction happy. Is
- 10:17the president good? Yes. Reaction weird
- 10:21face. Number three. Does the president
- 10:23like your dog? Answer, no. Reaction
- 10:27angry. Now that I've explained all that
- 10:30, let's continue with the game. After
- 10:33this level, I tried the new green icon.
- 10:35First, there were two new enemies in
- 10:37this level. A weird flying ghost with a
- 10:40trunk and a bat with a horse skull for
- 10:42a head that appeared randomly. Then I
- 10:46headed to a blue mountain level,
- 10:48expecting another nice and calm walk. I
- 10:52took my time, but was completely
- 10:53surprised when the fake Moguera came
- 10:55out of nowhere, heading quickly toward
- 10:57me and taking some of my health. It
- 11:01only took me 2 minutes to kill him
- 11:02without having to worry about a time
- 11:04limit, but boss monsters never appeared
- 11:06in side-scrolling levels in the normal
- 11:08game. It unsettled me to know what
- 11:11other rules the game would break. It
- 11:14was time to fight the fake Baran, whose
- 11:16replacement was one of the most bizarre
- 11:18things in the game. This strange
- 11:21creature attacked you with kicks and
- 11:23also by opening its chest to fire very
- 11:25annoying infrared missiles. The fake
- 11:27Baran is probably the easiest of all
- 11:30the replacements. This cannot be said
- 11:34of the fake Gedora. The fake Gedora was
- 11:37the hardest monster so far, especially
- 11:40because of its special ability to roar
- 11:42and summon a flock of those horse-bats.
- 11:46Curiously, none of those horse-bats
- 11:48came out after killing the fake Gedora.
- 11:52Now it was time to face Orga. Orga's
- 11:56main attacks were a punch and a heat
- 11:58ray fired from its shoulder cavity. But
- 12:01when I had already taken away half its
- 12:03health, it did something new. It opened
- 12:06its mouth and tried to eat Godzilla,
- 12:07stealing life and power. But by doing
- 12:11so, it created a new weakness, since
- 12:12firing a heat ray into its mouth took
- 12:14away about four health bars. With that
- 12:17weakness, I quickly defeated Orga. Just
- 12:21as I expected, the red face appeared
- 12:23again on the map at the base's location
- 12:25. I started the level and saw that it
- 12:28was basically the same as the first one
- 12:30. I didn't lose a thousandth of a
- 12:32second before I started running as fast
- 12:34as I could. Soon I encountered some
- 12:37obstacles like dirt blocks suspended in
- 12:39the air. Most of them could be jumped
- 12:42over or destroyed. With others, you had
- 12:44to crouch to get past them. A few
- 12:47seconds later, I heard a hideous roar
- 12:49and saw the spider beast following me
- 12:51closely from behind. The obstacles
- 12:55barely slowed it down; it moved through
- 12:57them, tearing them to pieces, and when
- 12:59the obstacles were smaller, it opened
- 13:01its mouth and swallowed them whole. I
- 13:04was scared, but by thinking fast and
- 13:06with even faster reflexes, I managed to
- 13:08escape again. I felt so excited that I
- 13:11started laughing and said, "Not this
- 13:13time, idiot." But when I said that
- 13:16phrase, right before the level had
- 13:18ended, the monster did something that
- 13:20made my blood run cold. It looked at me
- 13:22, I took another screenshot of the name
- 13:28of the next level, just before running
- 13:31off to the bathroom. When I returned to
- 13:35the game, I thought about the way the
- 13:37monster looked at me. The game couldn't
- 13:39have heard what I said. It's impossible
- 13:41. It had to be a coincidence. But why
- 13:44did it happen exactly when I insulted
- 13:47the monster? None of this game made any
- 13:50sense. The new monsters, the strange
- 13:54fake monsters, out-of-place scenery
- 13:56like the green temples, question levels
- 13:59, and the red monster chases—it made
- 14:01no sense at all. If it was a joke, it
- 14:06wasn't funny in any way I could
- 14:07understand, and they had clearly put
- 14:09way too much effort into it. The new
- 14:13world was madness. There were four
- 14:15bosses this time. Space Godzilla, Manda
- 14:18, Gigan, and Baragon. I was surprised
- 14:21to see two new Toho monsters this time,
- 14:23but the best surprise was yet to come.
- 14:27I started the question level, and here
- 14:29is the list of results. Do you know how
- 14:32to swim? Answer, yes. Happy reaction.
- 14:35Do you like fish? Answer, yes. Sick
- 14:39reaction. Can penguins fly? Answer, no.
- 14:43Sad reaction. Can it turn in all
- 14:46directions? Answer, no. Surprised
- 14:49reaction. Do you breathe oxygen? Answer
- 14:53, yes. Reaction, weird face number
- 14:55eight. Is it good to bite a woman? No.
- 14:59Annoyed reaction. Is it nighttime where
- 15:02you are? Answer, yes. Reaction. Weird
- 15:05face number six. Do you like cats?
- 15:08Answer. Yes. Confused reaction. Water
- 15:12is wet. Answer, yes, angry reaction.
- 15:16Have you ever broken a bone? Answer, no
- 15:19. Happy reaction. Do you like your job?
- 15:23Answer, yes. Hurt reaction. Do you want
- 15:26a new monster? Answer, yes, reaction,
- 15:29weird face. Number 11. I wasn't
- 15:33entirely sure what it meant by a new
- 15:35monster, but I couldn't resist
- 15:37answering yes, just to see what would
- 15:38happen. The game took me back to the
- 15:42board, and I had a new playable monster
- 15:44, Anguirus. I moved the new Anguirus
- 15:47piece, eager to test my new monster.
- 15:50What immediately caught my attention
- 15:52was the level's water, which had a
- 15:53transparency effect. I know the Super
- 15:56Nintendo could do it, but I had never
- 15:58seen a transparency effect in an NES
- 16:01game. I advanced through the level and
- 16:03again. There were no monsters or
- 16:05anything, but soon I had reached a
- 16:07cliff above the water. There was
- 16:09nowhere to go but into the water, so I
- 16:12dove in. After getting into the water,
- 16:15I encountered two new enemies, a giant
- 16:16piranha and a shapeless creature with
- 16:18many spikes. It didn't take many hits
- 16:22to kill them, but they were quite
- 16:24annoying and could significantly reduce
- 16:26your health if they got close enough.
- 16:29After beating the level, I moved
- 16:31Godzilla to the blue castle icon. I
- 16:33started the level and a cold,
- 16:35unrelenting title appeared. Whenever I
- 16:38played one of these levels, I had a
- 16:40sudden and horrible feeling of anxiety.
- 16:43I had the feeling that the more I
- 16:45progressed through the level, the
- 16:46closer I got to something terribly
- 16:48malicious. There were no enemies, but
- 16:51these were some of the longest levels
- 16:53in the game. I only played one level,
- 16:55but it took me 7 minutes to complete.
- 16:58Then it was time to fight the fake
- 17:00Baragon. Although Baragon was
- 17:03originally the smallest monster in the
- 17:05game, his replacement was the largest.
- 17:08He was so tall that his head barely
- 17:10avoided hitting the bar at the top of
- 17:12the screen. And he was as tremendously
- 17:15bizarre as he was giant. His combat
- 17:17techniques are very strange. First, he
- 17:20breathes a misty breath that makes you
- 17:22freeze. Then he walks back to the right
- 17:25corner of the screen and extends a huge
- 17:27machine gun from his abdomen. He would
- 17:31have been invincible if he had used it
- 17:33constantly, but fortunately he only did
- 17:35it twice while I fought him. When I was
- 17:38done with him, I started the third
- 17:40level type, the Arctic. The Arctic is
- 17:44exactly what you would imagine from the
- 17:46name, a frozen tundra with some water
- 17:47segments. There was a new enemy, a
- 17:51creature trapped in a block of ice that
- 17:53blocks the path and you must use your
- 17:55special ability to melt it and free it.
- 17:58Upon being freed, it makes a strange
- 18:00crawling movement and pushes you back.
- 18:03It doesn't cause any damage, but it is
- 18:05very annoying. After dealing with the
- 18:07ice man, I kept walking and came across
- 18:10a water segment. I jumped and this time
- 18:13I managed to get a picture showing how
- 18:15the water splashes when you enter it. I
- 18:18don't know how they programmed it, but
- 18:20it's quite impressive. Here you can see
- 18:22another new enemy that walks toward you
- 18:25and explodes randomly, sending spikes
- 18:27in all directions. Back on land, I
- 18:30encountered a very unexpected miniboss,
- 18:33Maguma, the Walrus Kaiju. Maguma's
- 18:36fighting tactics were very simple, he
- 18:38had a freeze beam and could charge at
- 18:41you. A really interesting thing about
- 18:43Maguma is that he doesn't die when
- 18:45defeated, he just turns around and
- 18:46retreats. I tried to run after him, but
- 18:50he disappeared after I got into the
- 18:51water. Finishing this zone, I moved on
- 18:55to the fight against Manda. As for the
- 18:57fight, Manda was a pretty cunning
- 18:59opponent. He used a fair number of
- 19:02tricks like spitting fire, biting, and
- 19:03the most irritating of all,
- 19:05constriction, his strongest attack.
- 19:08After I killed Amanda, I went after the
- 19:10fake Gigan. When the fight started, I
- 19:14was very confused because there was
- 19:16nothing there. I thought this was going
- 19:19to be like the Titanosaurus fight in
- 19:21Patos, but just as I was about to go
- 19:23back to the map, a piranha appeared on
- 19:25the screen, but it wasn't there for
- 19:27long. As soon as it appeared, the
- 19:31speakers let out a deafening screech
- 19:33and the fake Gigan tore the poor fish
- 19:34to shreds. That abrupt entrance made me
- 19:38jump and got my adrenaline pumping. The
- 19:40fake Gigan was tough, but my new skills
- 19:43with Anguirus helped keep up the pace.
- 19:46The fake Gigan's attacks consisted of a
- 19:48kind of blood laser he spat from his
- 19:50mouth and a downward attack. Anguirus's
- 19:53special attack would be the key to
- 19:55defeating him. After that, there was
- 19:59only one monster left to beat.
- 20:01SpaceGodzilla. SpaceGodzilla's fighting
- 20:04technique was quite frustrating. He
- 20:06used his energy to create two flying
- 20:08crystals that reached the ground and
- 20:10became crystal towers. These towers not
- 20:14only block you from reaching him, but
- 20:16also allow him to constantly recharge
- 20:18his energy and fire a deadly beam at
- 20:19you. Eventually, he would exhaust his
- 20:23own energy towers until they broke, but
- 20:25if you waited for that, you would
- 20:26probably lose a lot of health. When you
- 20:31finally got close enough to land a
- 20:33punch, SpaceGodzilla would hit you just
- 20:35as hard, doing his best to send you
- 20:37back to the left side of the screen and
- 20:40create more towers. By the time it was
- 20:44over, I only had about five health bars
- 20:47left, but it didn't matter because I
- 20:50didn't need to fight anymore, I just
- 20:52needed to run. At that moment, I
- 20:55decided I really wanted to see the end
- 20:57of the game. Despite how terrifying
- 21:00these levels could be, I had to pass
- 21:02them to move forward. For this chase, I
- 21:05tried Anguirus, since his ball-rolling
- 21:08attack allowed me to move faster. The
- 21:12chase started like the first two,
- 21:14except there was a river of blood
- 21:16beneath the ground. The extra speed
- 21:19helped me gain an advantage over the
- 21:21red monster, especially since I didn't
- 21:23have to worry about a power limit and
- 21:25could keep rolling non-stop. Just like
- 21:29the previous water levels, the ground
- 21:31inevitably came to an end, so I rolled
- 21:33into the blood. To my surprise, the
- 21:36hellish beast didn't follow me; it just
- 21:39stopped at the edge of the land and
- 21:41grimaced. "I guess he doesn't know how
- 21:43to swim," I thought, so I kept moving.
- 21:46There was nothing around, but I knew
- 21:48something was happening. The chase
- 21:50wasn't going to end that easily, or so
- 21:53it seemed, something else had to appear
- 21:55. And sure enough, I heard a roar. The
- 21:58monster was chasing me with a new
- 22:00aquatic body. I had no idea it had that
- 22:03capability. Being submerged slowed me
- 22:05down and the beast had about the same
- 22:08speed. I came across some bottomless
- 22:10pits, from which some mines were
- 22:12floating upward. I assumed hitting one
- 22:15would hurt you and send you backward.
- 22:19Considering the red monster's swim
- 22:20speed, hitting a mine was instant death
- 22:23, so I tried hard to avoid hitting them
- 22:25. But that wasn't all I had to be
- 22:28careful about. Halfway through the
- 22:31chase, the beast revealed yet another
- 22:33surprise. A tentacle of intestines with
- 22:36clawed jaws at the tip came out of its
- 22:38mouth, trying to devour me. I barely
- 22:42avoided the tentacle and the mines, but
- 22:44I realized the beast was getting
- 22:45desperate because the chase was almost
- 22:47over. And about a minute later, I saw a
- 22:51patch of land that served as an exit. I
- 22:54jumped with all the acceleration I
- 22:56could muster. The beast screamed in
- 22:59rage and leaped out of the river of
- 23:00blood in a last attempt to drag me down
- 23:02, but I escaped its clutches. I threw
- 23:07myself into my bed and took a deep
- 23:09breath, satisfied with another
- 23:11successful escape. Now I was headed to
- 23:13the fifth world. Entropy. Entropy had a
- 23:19very distinct design, but it was huge
- 23:21and diverse. Interestingly, none of the
- 23:24levels from the previous worlds were
- 23:26present here. Instead, there were eight
- 23:29new icons. The bosses this time were
- 23:31Megalon, Battra, and Mechagodzilla. As
- 23:34always, the first thing I did was go to
- 23:36the question level. Do you like ice
- 23:39cream? Answer. Yes. Weird face reaction
- 23:42. Number one. Do you like clowns?
- 23:46Answer. Yes, weird face reaction.
- 23:48Number 10. Time slips through your
- 23:51fingers. Answer. Yes. Weird face
- 23:54reaction. Number two. Do you regret
- 23:57anything? Answer, yes. Hurt reaction.
- 24:00There are people who deserve to die.
- 24:03Answer, no. Weird face reaction. Number
- 24:05three. Is it safe to go out at night?
- 24:08Answer. Yes. Weird face reaction.
- 24:11Number five. Do you find it hard to
- 24:13sleep at night? Answer. Yes. Weird face
- 24:17reaction. Number nine. Have you ever
- 24:19killed someone? Answer, no. Weird face
- 24:22reaction. Number seven. Do you want to
- 24:25kill someone? Answer, no. Angry
- 24:27reaction. Are you even accomplishing
- 24:30anything? Answer, no. Weird face
- 24:33reaction. Number four. Does life have
- 24:35any real meaning? Answer, no. Reaction.
- 24:39Love. Do you like Mothra? I knew the
- 24:43last one would be related to the game,
- 24:44but I had no idea what the result would
- 24:46be. So I answered no. And the face not
- 24:50only responded with that manic
- 24:52expression, but also text that read, "
- 24:54Too bad!" I was taken back to the map
- 24:57and was surprised to see that Godzilla
- 24:59and Anguirus had disappeared from the
- 25:01board, leaving only Mothra. The game
- 25:04had screwed me over. I took a deep
- 25:06breath and prepared to explore. There
- 25:09were two paths I could take across the
- 25:11board. I decided to take the one at the
- 25:13bottom. The first world was a forest,
- 25:15so I started there. Almost immediately,
- 25:18I had a strange feeling. There was
- 25:21something about the level that felt
- 25:22wrong, even more so than the previous
- 25:24ones, and the fact that I had to use
- 25:26Mothra didn't help. In the previous
- 25:28worlds, playing as Godzilla gave me a
- 25:30sense of power. I was capable of
- 25:32dealing with almost anything that stood
- 25:34in my way, but that's not the case with
- 25:36Mothra. No sense of strength or
- 25:38security. Just a weak and insecure bug
- 25:41crossing into the unknown. After a
- 25:44while, I encountered the first enemies
- 25:46of the level, or at least I assumed
- 25:47they were enemies. These were strange,
- 25:51long-legged deer that, instead of
- 25:53attacking, just walked around calmly. I
- 25:57thought about shooting a beam at them
- 25:58to see what would happen, but it didn't
- 26:00feel right. The creatures were harmless
- 26:03, so I flew over them and the level
- 26:06continued. About halfway through, I ran
- 26:10into a group of more deer and also two
- 26:12new creatures: a beak-faced sloth-like
- 26:14creature climbing a tree and some kind
- 26:16of furry raptors that were hunting the
- 26:18deer. It was very surreal to see these
- 26:22creatures interacting with each other.
- 26:24It didn't feel like I was playing an
- 26:26NES video game. The creatures mostly
- 26:29ignored me. The confrontation was
- 26:32easily avoided because I flew to the
- 26:34top of the screen. After that, I had to
- 26:37choose if I wanted to play the levels
- 26:38with the hourglass or the ones with the
- 26:40television. I chose the second option.
- 26:44When I pressed the button to start a
- 26:46level on the TV like I normally would,
- 26:48a creepy animation appeared. And even
- 26:51more so because I had a shirt that
- 26:53looked just like that as a kid. Once
- 26:55the animation started, the only way to
- 26:58return to the board was by pressing any
- 27:00button. After that, I didn't know what
- 27:02to expect from the rest of those icons.
- 27:05I tried the hourglass one and felt
- 27:06somewhat relieved when a regular level
- 27:08appeared. The most interesting thing
- 27:11about the level was the colored
- 27:12hourglasses. I encountered the blue
- 27:15hourglass first. This slowed down time
- 27:18and I saw enemies from the past, which
- 27:20were five different types of
- 27:22prehistoric animals. I don't know much
- 27:25about prehistory, but I think all these
- 27:27enemies represent real animals. The
- 27:31level continued with another segment
- 27:33where I found a green hourglass and
- 27:34fought the game's original enemies.
- 27:38They all seemed to be an entire fleet
- 27:40of them. They damaged me a little, but
- 27:42it was nothing I couldn't handle. But
- 27:45in the last segment I encountered the
- 27:47red hourglass and the enemies must have
- 27:49been from the future. The game was
- 27:53actually showing me eight-bit versions
- 27:55of creatures that will actually exist
- 27:57thousands of years in Earth's future.
- 28:01When one last creature appeared, all
- 28:03the others ran for their lives, leaving
- 28:05me alone to fight it. It could fly, but
- 28:09its sprite didn't move and its only
- 28:11attack was firing a beam from its face.
- 28:14Even so, it was surprisingly powerful
- 28:16and I guess it could be considered a
- 28:18mini-boss. After defeating it, it
- 28:21dropped a health power-up that restored
- 28:23the health and energy I had lost in the
- 28:24fight. After that stage, which I call
- 28:28the time tunnel, came a stage that
- 28:30seemed to be a toxic waste dump. As you
- 28:34can see, the place looked filthy and
- 28:36inhospitable. All the enemies seemed to
- 28:38be mutated to some degree. You can see
- 28:42green mummies with bird skulls jumping
- 28:44out of the waste to spit projectiles
- 28:46and a brown skeleton with spider legs.
- 28:49Halfway through, I even saw one of the
- 28:51deer from the forest. It was alone and
- 28:55when I saw it, it was drinking toxic
- 28:56waste from a barrel with an
- 28:58anteater-like tongue. I was approaching
- 29:02it to make it stop, but then a flock of
- 29:04skull birds came out of nowhere and
- 29:06started attacking me. The deer got
- 29:08scared by this and ended up falling
- 29:10into the toxic waste. I felt bad for it
- 29:13. One of the birds bit me, but I
- 29:15recovered health quickly by killing
- 29:17them all, since they were very weak. I
- 29:20kept moving forward. I encountered more
- 29:23creatures throughout the level, like a
- 29:25mass with tentacles and a deformed
- 29:27thing with human teeth. I didn't want
- 29:30to fight them, so I kept flying near
- 29:32the top of the screen. At the end of
- 29:35the level was a large bubbling green
- 29:37lake and there I met another mini-boss,
- 29:40a kind of monster with a long neck and
- 29:42a whale skull. It attacked with
- 29:45projectiles coming out of its mouth and
- 29:47by ramming you. It could also go
- 29:49underwater and quickly pop out in a
- 29:51different place. He was harder to beat
- 29:54than the time tunnel boss and had so
- 29:56much health, it must have taken me 3
- 29:58minutes to defeat him. He made a very
- 30:01loud noise when he died and then sank
- 30:03into the water while I moved on. Back
- 30:07on the board, I headed to the nearest
- 30:09level icon I hadn't seen until then,
- 30:11which was a white tree. As I assumed,
- 30:14the level was like the forest level,
- 30:16but in a winter style. I traveled
- 30:18through the first segment, enjoying the
- 30:20atmosphere for several minutes. When I
- 30:23suddenly realized something, I hadn't
- 30:25seen a single creature since I started
- 30:27the level. Where was every animal?
- 30:31Shortly after, I passed the section and
- 30:33the next segment began. In the second
- 30:36segment, I was still in the winter
- 30:38forest, but the background music was
- 30:39gone. It started to feel suspicious,
- 30:43but then I reminded myself that there
- 30:45were other empty levels in the game and
- 30:47this was probably one of those. I could
- 30:51feel my heart sink when I came across
- 30:53this horrible scene. It was a whole
- 30:56group of dead deer covered in snow.
- 30:58Judging by the blackish-blue tone of
- 31:00their skin, they must have frozen. Upon
- 31:03closer inspection, some were missing
- 31:06parts of their bodies. Before leaving
- 31:08the level, I really hoped to see
- 31:10something like the animals from the
- 31:12previous forest alive. And so I did. It
- 31:16was a creature very similar to the
- 31:17beaked sloth, except this creature had
- 31:19white fur and looked more like a
- 31:21gorilla. It was walking very slowly
- 31:24when I saw it, but I was happy to at
- 31:25least see something alive. However, it
- 31:28didn't stay that way for long. A pack
- 31:31of raptors came running from the right
- 31:34side of the screen. The gorilla didn't
- 31:37stand a chance and one of the raptors
- 31:39immediately lunged at it and ripped its
- 31:41legs. These winter raptors acted very
- 31:45differently from their temperate-zone
- 31:47relatives. They attacked everything
- 31:49they saw. One was running back and
- 31:51forth without scratching anything. Even
- 31:54the sounds they made sounded different,
- 31:56shriller and more rabid. Upon leaving
- 31:59this second segment, I could even see
- 32:01two raptors fighting to the death. Both
- 32:05were covered in wounds and one of them
- 32:07had been blinded in one eye. I only had
- 32:10to pass through one more segment before
- 32:12I could return to the board. But in
- 32:16this segment, I was no longer in the
- 32:17winter forest, but on a very empty
- 32:19grassy plain, with a bright gray moon
- 32:21in the sky. After a long stretch of
- 32:24nothing, I arrived at a lake, and then
- 32:27the moon came down from the sky and
- 32:29began to hatch like an egg. When it did
- 32:32, a humanoid figure fell into the lake
- 32:34and the halves of the moon quickly
- 32:36disintegrated. Afterward, the screen
- 32:39started to shake and a new creature
- 32:41emerged from the water. And that was
- 32:43how I was introduced to a monster I
- 32:45call the lunar beast. It was the most
- 32:47difficult fight so far. It was stronger
- 32:50than any of the previous bosses. This
- 32:52creature would have been hard to beat
- 32:54with Godzilla, and with Mothra, it
- 32:56seemed almost impossible. I barely had
- 32:58three health bars left. When I finally
- 33:00killed this abomination. But what
- 33:03happened afterward can hardly be called
- 33:05a reward, since after killing the lunar
- 33:08beast, this happened. Ah,
- 33:45After this, the game returned to the
- 33:47board screen. I was doing everything I
- 33:50could not to scream, and my hands were
- 33:52shaking so much I could barely hold the
- 33:54controller. I knew the game was going
- 33:57to test me, and I kept playing. I could
- 34:00feel my brain going crazy. That was
- 34:04when I could no longer deny what now
- 34:05seems obvious. This game is alive. It
- 34:08is possessed. And not only that, it is
- 34:11also capable of establishing some kind
- 34:13of connection with the player. I knew
- 34:15that if I stopped playing, I would
- 34:17never be able to stop thinking about it
- 34:19. How many people have ever witnessed
- 34:22such an experience? I had the TV remote
- 34:27right next to me, ready to turn off the
- 34:29TV in case I felt I was in real danger.
- 34:33And if that didn't work, I could pull
- 34:35the plug from the wall or just run out
- 34:37of the room. Surely that would be
- 34:41enough. I took a several-minute break
- 34:44to calm my nerves and then went back to
- 34:46the game. Now there was a TV screen
- 34:49icon just below the white forest I had
- 34:51just left. And because the first
- 34:54animation was very bizarre, I figured I
- 34:56should try another to see what happened
- 34:58. Although I expected the same
- 35:01animation, I actually got a completely
- 35:04different one. Weird, I can't stop
- 35:07wondering what the point of all that
- 35:09stuff was, but then it was time for
- 35:11another level. Power and health were
- 35:15refilled and Mothra's spray had been
- 35:16shrunk to half its original size. The
- 35:19golden labyrinth was an anomaly in
- 35:21itself. I'm not sure how this level
- 35:24could have been played if I were using
- 35:26Godzilla or Anguirus, because flying
- 35:28seemed necessary to be able to move
- 35:30around this place. This level was
- 35:34seemingly gigantic in size, as every
- 35:36time I thought I had reached the end of
- 35:38it or thought I was going to end up
- 35:40back where I started, I found something
- 35:42completely new. Things like lava blocks
- 35:46, new enemies, or statue faces. until I
- 35:50found a statue face in a dead end,
- 35:52staring right at me with wide eyes. I
- 35:56can't help but feel that something is
- 35:58really staring at me from behind the
- 36:00screen when I see this. So I left the
- 36:03statue almost as soon as I found it.
- 36:05Anyway, I needed to find the exit. It
- 36:08felt as if this level was constantly
- 36:10stretching in every direction. I must
- 36:13have wandered around the level for at
- 36:15least 15 minutes before finally seeing
- 36:17something. A creature that wasn't
- 36:20golden, lacking any kind of levitation
- 36:22ability like the other creatures, just
- 36:24walking back and forth on the platform.
- 36:29But it wasn't long before I found a
- 36:30flying machine that swooped down,
- 36:32grabbed it, and then flew off with it.
- 36:36I decided to follow it to see where it
- 36:38was taking the creature. The machine
- 36:40stopped in a room with a boiler-type
- 36:42object in the center. The machine
- 36:44hovered over the cauldron and dropped
- 36:45the creature inside it. The creature
- 36:48emerged from a hole in the side of the
- 36:50cauldron, now with the same golden
- 36:51color as everything else. The machine
- 36:54flew away. I'm not quite sure what
- 36:57happened there, but I'm glad I found it
- 36:59because I found the exit shortly after.
- 37:02When I returned to the board, I noticed
- 37:04that the bosses hadn't moved at all. A
- 37:07bit strange, but it didn't bother me.
- 37:09It made planning my route through
- 37:11entropy easier. There were still two
- 37:14new icons to explore, the indigo cliffs
- 37:16and a black version of the labyrinth.
- 37:19So I played the indigo cliffs first.
- 37:22Upon entering a new icon, one of the
- 37:24first things I found were those
- 37:26multicolored creatures with big heads
- 37:28emerging from a small cave in the
- 37:30ground. They all made a hectic,
- 37:33synchronized sound, walking to the
- 37:35right in a group after emerging from
- 37:37the cave, ignoring me. Having another
- 37:40path to take, I followed them on their
- 37:42route. Finally, the path ended at a
- 37:45cliff. I was shocked to see that after
- 37:48reaching the cliff, all the creatures
- 37:50began to jump into the abyss. I had
- 37:53never seen NPCs committing mass suicide
- 37:56like this. I continued flying over
- 37:59several strange animals. Another group
- 38:02of multicolored ones were jumping up
- 38:04and down only to be snatched by large
- 38:06birds. I defeated some of the birds in
- 38:10combat, but it bothered me that those
- 38:12colored heads seemed so eager to die.
- 38:16If the game itself is alive, it's
- 38:17possible the creatures in those levels
- 38:19are alive too. At the end of the level,
- 38:23I saw yet another group of colored
- 38:24heads marching toward a large monster
- 38:26and being devoured. This was starting
- 38:30to disgust me, so I acted impulsively
- 38:32and fired my eye beams at both the
- 38:34monster and the colored heads. The
- 38:36monster became furious and ran over the
- 38:39remaining colored heads to fight me.
- 38:42Although it lacked ranged attacks, it
- 38:44was relentless, but it was no match for
- 38:47me. I was in the home stretch with the
- 38:50bosses. My plan was to go after Battra
- 38:52first. As I had expected, it started in
- 38:55its larva form. Larval Battra fought
- 38:58similarly to how Maguma did, lunging
- 39:00back and forth and occasionally firing
- 39:03lightning from its horn. Fighting
- 39:07Battra in its adult form felt a lot
- 39:08like fighting a clone of Mothra,
- 39:10although Battra was distinctly faster
- 39:12and stronger; while it lacked the horn
- 39:14lightning, it now had a new, more
- 39:16powerful beam. Honestly, it was damn
- 39:20fun; to be truthful, after defeating
- 39:23Battra, I was excited to see what
- 39:25Megalon would be like. Megalon was very
- 39:28similar to Moguera, but faster and with
- 39:30more attacks. It had started attacking
- 39:33me with its drills, then spitting
- 39:35grenades, and finally firing its beams.
- 39:39It only went forward, so it was easy to
- 39:41duck under it and then shoot it with my
- 39:43own beams. Megalon was strong but
- 39:46clumsy. The end of Entropy was now near
- 39:49. I had just taken down Megalon and
- 39:52triggered the last television screen to
- 39:54see what I got. This time the result
- 39:57was unpleasant. I couldn't understand
- 40:00why this animation was so sinister and
- 40:02violent compared to the other two. The
- 40:06whole game seemed to be becoming more
- 40:08and more malevolent. The last level of
- 40:10Entropy is what I call the Shadow Maze.
- 40:13The scenery had been recolored from
- 40:15gold to black. I traveled through the
- 40:19maze for about a minute and noticed
- 40:20there were no creatures floating around
- 40:22. It was a strange transition from the
- 40:26gold maze that was plagued with
- 40:28creatures to this level where there was
- 40:30nothing at all. Then, the screen turned
- 40:33black. The only thing I could see was
- 40:36Mothra's spray. I couldn't tell where I
- 40:39was heading and ended up running
- 40:40frantically into the walls. I heard a
- 40:44noise, the sound of a crowd running
- 40:46through a hallway, and along with the
- 40:48noise came the roars. Roaring sounds—
- 40:52noises I could describe as a rabid dog
- 40:54the size of an elephant screaming in
- 40:56fury. And I could tell that whatever it
- 40:59was, it was making this noise. There
- 41:02were a ton of them. I knew something
- 41:05was there, but until I did some editing
- 41:07on the screenshots, I couldn't see what
- 41:09my pursuers looked like. At that moment
- 41:12I couldn't see where they were or where
- 41:14I was headed. I was literally running
- 41:17blind and this mob of beasts would
- 41:19finally catch up to me. When the light
- 41:22returned, the attackers disappeared.
- 41:25And thus the challenge of this level
- 41:27was revealed: find the exit before the
- 41:28lights go out and a pack of monsters
- 41:30mutilates you to death. While going
- 41:33through the level, the lights went out
- 41:35a total of three times. The second time
- 41:39I would have been a dead man if it
- 41:41hadn't been for one of the wide-eyed
- 41:42statues, since as long as I stayed
- 41:44close, the monsters seemed to avoid me
- 41:46completely until the lights came back
- 41:48on. I would be safe as long as I stayed
- 41:52near the statue, but at the same time I
- 41:54had to leave it to find the exit. The
- 41:57shadow maze turned out to be much
- 41:59smaller than the golden maze, since it
- 42:01only took me about 6 minutes to
- 42:02navigate to the exit. Now there was
- 42:07only one boss left, Mechagodzilla. I
- 42:09started the battle and got something
- 42:11unexpected. Not only did my health
- 42:14return to 100%, but instead of a
- 42:16substitute boss, I was fighting
- 42:18Godzilla. But anyone who calls
- 42:20themselves a Godzilla fan could foresee
- 42:22the following. Mecha Godzilla started
- 42:25off fighting like a Godzilla clone, but
- 42:27its disguise burned off after only
- 42:29three health bars. This was like
- 42:31fighting Mecha Godzilla in the normal
- 42:33game. It felt pretty good to fight one
- 42:36of the original enemies from the game
- 42:38for a change. But after getting its
- 42:40health down to half, something strange
- 42:42started to happen. Its sprite started
- 42:45to glitch in a way very similar to how
- 42:47Gezora had done back in the first world
- 42:49. After a few seconds, the glitches
- 42:52started to generate a new form and thus
- 42:54the game had created the fake
- 42:56Mechagodzilla, one of the strongest
- 42:58replacement monsters with the most
- 43:00firepower. Even though it was a bit
- 43:03stronger, it was also slower than its
- 43:05original counterpart and couldn't jump
- 43:07as high. I won the battle by constantly
- 43:10staying out of its line of fire and
- 43:12bombarding it with poisonous dust while
- 43:14flying over it. So I moved on to the
- 43:18final chase. The final Entropy chase
- 43:23ended up being exactly as I had feared
- 43:25it might be, a labyrinthine level. All
- 43:28the other chases, although difficult,
- 43:31were extremely simple. You simply had
- 43:34to run to the right and not get touched
- 43:36. But this eliminated all the
- 43:38simplicity of the matter. There was no
- 43:41way to predict how big this maze would
- 43:43be or where the exit was. And now, not
- 43:46only did I have to constantly backtrack
- 43:48to find my way out, I also had to keep
- 43:50the red monster from touching me. At
- 43:53first, it didn't show up, but I knew it
- 43:56would. And as soon as I started to get
- 43:58into a rhythm, I heard a loud flapping
- 44:00noise and there it was in a flying form
- 44:06. It flew with bat-like wings and was
- 44:08as fast and relentless as ever. I
- 44:11managed to lose it by taking a
- 44:13different path than it apparently
- 44:15expected, and it was blocked from
- 44:17attacking me by one of the maze's
- 44:18organic red walls. It tried to claw
- 44:21through the wall for a second before
- 44:23opening its mouth and tearing the wall
- 44:25apart with its intestinal jaws. Those
- 44:28brief milliseconds that the monster was
- 44:30trapped could have been the key to
- 44:32finding the exit. The path to the exit
- 44:35was long and complex, but as I recall,
- 44:38I went up and then turned left. I'm
- 44:41still not sure why I chose that
- 44:43particular path. I was sweating, but my
- 44:46luck had saved me once again. The next
- 44:51one was the penultimate world, called
- 44:53Extus. A brief moment before the
- 44:57transition between Entropy and Extus, I
- 44:59was wishing I had Godzilla and Anguirus
- 45:01back. When the board appeared, I saw
- 45:04that my wish was half-granted. I had
- 45:06Godzilla back, but not Anguirus. Extus
- 45:09had two temples of different colors,
- 45:11white and pink. There were pyramids,
- 45:14modern building shapes, and other icons
- 45:17I couldn't understand. The new bosses
- 45:19were Kumonga, Gorosaurus, and Ghidorah.
- 45:23With Godzilla back, I was excited to
- 45:25explore the levels, though still being
- 45:27cautious. I went to the question level,
- 45:30as was already the custom. On this
- 45:32occasion, it came with more random
- 45:34questions than ever. Elephants breathe.
- 45:38Answer. Yes. Weird face reaction.
- 45:41Number two. Have you ever been bothered
- 45:44by a family member? Answer. No. Weird
- 45:47face reaction. Number six. Have you
- 45:50ever abused anyone? Answer. No. Weird
- 45:53face reaction. Number eight. Green is
- 45:56your favorite color. Answer, no. Weird
- 45:59face reaction. Number 10. The computer
- 46:02is the pinnacle of modern technology.
- 46:05Answer, yes. Reaction, weird face.
- 46:07Number four. You are a tough guy.
- 46:10Answer, yes. Weird face reaction,
- 46:12number 12, can you fly? Answer, no.
- 46:15Weird face reaction, number nine. Can
- 46:18you stand on your head? Answer. Yes.
- 46:21Weird face reaction. Number seven. You
- 46:24heard raccoons. Answer, no. Confused
- 46:28reaction. Do you feel guilt? Answer, no
- 46:31. Funny face reaction. Number 11. Do
- 46:34you want a new monster? Answer, yes.
- 46:37Reaction. surprised. "Do you miss me?"
- 46:40Answer: Yes. Sad reaction. I was happy
- 46:45because I assumed I'd get a new monster
- 46:47, but the last question intrigued me. "
- 46:50Do you miss me? Does it mean when the
- 46:53game ends?" I wasn't sure what to think
- 46:55. The game went back to the board and
- 46:59sure enough there was a new monster,
- 47:01but I had no idea who it was supposed
- 47:03to be. The sprite bore a resemblance to
- 47:07Rodan, but the head was totally out of
- 47:09place. So I moved the mysterious
- 47:12character toward the white icon and
- 47:13started the level. As the level started
- 47:17, text appeared on screen saying, "Find
- 47:19the gem." These were likely the level
- 47:22instructions. After that, I observed my
- 47:25new monster. It was a dark blue furry
- 47:28creature with bat wings and a skull
- 47:30face. Its name was Solomon. I found
- 47:35that the path was blocked by a beam of
- 47:37light and a small pillar with a plaque
- 47:38on it. I figured this light beam was
- 47:42blocking the exit, so I had to find the
- 47:44gem and place it on the plaque to
- 47:46deactivate it. How would I do that? I
- 47:48didn't know. In the original game,
- 47:51there was nothing that required finding
- 47:52anything to beat a level. I would have
- 47:55to figure out how to find the gem. The
- 47:57only direction I could go was to the
- 48:00left, so I proceeded. Solomon was an
- 48:04interesting monster, to say the least.
- 48:06He was capable of flying and shooting a
- 48:09heat ray, which proved to be very
- 48:10useful. He could also kick and slash
- 48:13with his wings, but he couldn't dodge
- 48:15or crouch. It wasn't long before new
- 48:19enemies started to appear. After
- 48:22killing about 10 of them, there was a
- 48:25pause and none appeared for a while.
- 48:28Moving forward, I found an area where
- 48:30there were holes in the floor and the
- 48:32ceiling. Creatures were coming out of
- 48:34them, flying quickly from top to bottom
- 48:36. I had to jump carefully. Luckily, I
- 48:40managed to get out without a scratch.
- 48:43Upon reaching the end of the corridor,
- 48:45I ran into a kind of mini-boss. It
- 48:47moved quickly and shot some kind of
- 48:49projectile in four directions. In the
- 48:52end, I killed it with relative ease
- 48:54using atomic breath. When the battle
- 48:57ended, the gem that was inside the
- 48:59creature's head fell out. I had to take
- 49:02a fairly long trip back to the start,
- 49:04where I deposited the gem on the plaque
- 49:06and the beam deactivated. I exited the
- 49:09level and was shown what was probably
- 49:11the strangest thing about the monster.
- 49:15Every time I finished a stage or
- 49:17defeated a boss with Solomon, this
- 49:19image appeared on the screen. I still
- 49:22have no idea what the phrase refers to.
- 49:25This is perhaps the only thing in the
- 49:27game for which I can find no meaning.
- 49:31The next level I played was one I call
- 49:33the bronze pyramids. Things were pretty
- 49:36normal in this level. The landscape was
- 49:39very interesting and unusually colorful
- 49:41and lively. I spent my time fighting
- 49:44enemies, though they were all quite
- 49:46weak. My favorite enemy was the giant
- 49:48reptile I encountered halfway through.
- 49:51At the end of the level, I reached a
- 49:53giant pyramid and set out to fight the
- 49:56miniboss. Although this one was
- 49:58different, as I had to fight two of
- 50:00these monsters at once. Individually,
- 50:03it could have been a very easy battle.
- 50:05The fight with both at once was a
- 50:06challenge. I secured the victory by
- 50:09tricking one of the twin beasts,
- 50:10jumping at the moment it launched its
- 50:12fire attack, damaging its partner. I
- 50:18wanted to try Solomon a bit more, so I
- 50:20moved his piece to one of the brown
- 50:22pillars with colored dots and started
- 50:24the level. When I entered, I realized
- 50:27what the Totems icon represented. I was
- 50:31greeted by two of them from the very
- 50:33beginning. I walked for about 3 minutes
- 50:35with nothing else in sight but the
- 50:37totems. Walking through this puzzling
- 50:40level left me with the feeling that I
- 50:41was being watched. Just 10 minutes
- 50:45after starting the level, I was already
- 50:46halfway through. After finishing the
- 50:50totem level, I tried the television
- 50:52icon to see how strange it would be
- 50:53this time. This was even stranger than
- 50:58before, apparently, so I switched back
- 51:00to Godzilla to play, and this level was
- 51:02a big surprise. It was a normal city
- 51:05level. The colors were somber, but I
- 51:08was still in shock. This was the type
- 51:11of level you would expect to see in a
- 51:13Godzilla game. There was nothing
- 51:15strange about this level, so I finished
- 51:18it quickly. I returned to the board and
- 51:20moved Solomon to the grayish-green icon
- 51:23, which turned out to be a gigantic
- 51:25high-tech laboratory. There were a lot
- 51:27of machines in this level, but Solomon
- 51:29finished them off just like the enemies
- 51:31in the white temple. There were also
- 51:34some very annoying flyers that would
- 51:36fly away when you jumped to attack them
- 51:38. Something interesting was the tanks
- 51:41in the background, containing some kind
- 51:43of creature inside. Sometimes these
- 51:45monsters would wake up and break out,
- 51:47shattering the glass. I tried to pass
- 51:50the tanks as quickly as possible
- 51:52because the monsters inside turned out
- 51:54to be very annoying. Once they were
- 51:56released, at the end of the level there
- 51:58was an elevator I used to go down to
- 52:00where the exit was. Along the way, I
- 52:03was attacked by security machines. I
- 52:05couldn't leave the elevator, so my only
- 52:08defense was the heat ray. The final
- 52:12level was somewhat simple. I named it
- 52:14the heart temple. It consisted solely
- 52:17of a long hallway filled with floating
- 52:20heart-shaped enemies. These were unable
- 52:24to hurt you, so what I did was go
- 52:26through the level and destroy all that
- 52:28I could to get more power-ups. Once I
- 52:31had seen all the level types, I decided
- 52:34to fight Gorosaurus using Solomon. It
- 52:38was during this fight that I realized
- 52:40Solomon had more power than usual, as a
- 52:42single well-aimed slash could take out
- 52:43up to four bars of the enemy's health.
- 52:47Gorosaurus had no projectile attacks or
- 52:49anything else that could match
- 52:51Solomon's deadly claws. I let the fight
- 52:55go on long enough to see if Gorosaurus
- 52:57used his famous kangaroo kick. And
- 52:59honestly, I was happy when he did. Even
- 53:03though I knew Solomon was very good in
- 53:05combat, I used Godzilla in the battle
- 53:07with Kumonga just for a change. Without
- 53:10heat rays or anything similar, Kumonga
- 53:13was also a simple opponent. He attacked
- 53:15by jumping on you, embedding his jaws,
- 53:18and he also used his web to paralyze
- 53:20you. Once he paralyzed you, Kumonga
- 53:23would take the opportunity to attack,
- 53:25but it was mostly just to buy some time
- 53:27, just like Gezora did when pushing you
- 53:30into a corner. With Gorosaurus and
- 53:34Kumonga defeated, I was already at the
- 53:36end of Exus. Before I fought Ghidorah,
- 53:38there was still something to do. I
- 53:41wasn't expecting much, but almost as a
- 53:43requirement, I had to take a look at
- 53:45the other television screen. I don't
- 53:48think there was much of a reason behind
- 53:50the television screens. If I had to
- 53:53guess, I'd say it's a random
- 53:54manifestation not controlled by the
- 53:56cartridge's capabilities. It was time
- 54:00for me to fight Ghidorah. Even though I
- 54:03had gained courage with Solomon's
- 54:05combat advantages, I was still nervous.
- 54:07And when I started the fight, this
- 54:09immediately confused me. My opponent
- 54:13was the fake Gezora. I defeated the
- 54:15impostor with a few hits, and then
- 54:17quite suddenly, the fake Moguera
- 54:19appeared. Then I understood. The goal
- 54:23of the fake Ghidorah was that I had to
- 54:25beat all the previous replacements. And
- 54:27that is what I did. After fighting the
- 54:31fake Moguera, I fought the fake Varan,
- 54:34the fake Gezora, the fake Baragon, then
- 54:37the fake Gigan, and finally the fake
- 54:40Mechagodzilla. I fought them until I
- 54:44finally reached the fake one, which was
- 54:46actually a Dorat. Once I stopped
- 54:49laughing, I destroyed it with just two
- 54:51slashes. I thought I was going back to
- 54:54the board, but the battle wasn't over.
- 54:57The real fight was against a monster
- 54:59called Chimera, a monstrous hybrid
- 55:01generated from all the previous fake
- 55:02bosses. This was by far the hardest
- 55:06boss yet. Each of its attacks drained
- 55:10whole bars of health, while my attacks
- 55:11against it luckily only took off half a
- 55:13health bar. To take down this beast, I
- 55:17came up with a strategy. I started
- 55:20switching between Godzilla and Solomon,
- 55:22and when one would get dangerously low
- 55:24on health, I would take them to the
- 55:26heart temple while fighting Chimera
- 55:28with the other. I started praying that
- 55:31Chimera wouldn't recover its lost
- 55:33health. One of the most interesting
- 55:35things about Chimera was that the
- 55:37colored sections on its health bar
- 55:38corresponded to different parts of its
- 55:40body. The head was invincible as long
- 55:44as the other parts were present.
- 55:46Besides being difficult, it was the
- 55:49longest fight yet. I'm still trying to
- 55:52remember how many times the timer
- 55:53kicked me out of the fight. Once I had
- 55:57destroyed all of its body components,
- 55:59the head flew on its own and had
- 56:00incredible speed. Chimera fought well,
- 56:04but I was determined, and once it was
- 56:06reduced to just a head, it no longer
- 56:08had the power to defeat Solomon, and I
- 56:09finished it off using the heat ray.
- 56:14After this long fight, I was exhausted
- 56:16and worried about how it might affect
- 56:18my performance in the chase level. But
- 56:21the base icon was replaced, though not
- 56:23by the hellish face, as there was a
- 56:25cross in its place instead. I was
- 56:28completely surprised. It's not that I
- 56:31exactly missed the hellish face icon,
- 56:32but if there was one thing about these
- 56:34levels, it was that they were
- 56:35unpredictable. So I tried to start the
- 56:38level with Solomon, but I couldn't.
- 56:40Suddenly, a notice appeared on the
- 56:42screen that said, "Solomon cannot enter
- 56:44here." It didn't say why, but I thought
- 56:48it might have something to do with
- 56:49Solomon's demonic appearance. So I
- 56:52decided to go with Godzilla instead.
- 56:56Once I saw the level, the cross made
- 56:58sense. The level was a graveyard. I was
- 57:01already on edge, thinking this was just
- 57:04a trick. The final level always
- 57:07involved running from the demonic beast
- 57:08, and I wasn't going to be fooled into
- 57:10thinking this time would be different.
- 57:13So I started running, but after a while
- 57:16, I slowed down. Two minutes into the
- 57:19level, I encountered something I wasn't
- 57:21sure how to react to. My first instinct
- 57:24was to run, but this blue statue was
- 57:26just floating in place, and I felt
- 57:28compelled to look at it for a while. I
- 57:32assumed it was an angel watching over
- 57:34the departed. It gave me a strange, yet
- 57:37warm feeling. I wouldn't call it happy,
- 57:40but I felt at peace in a way. I had
- 57:42never seen anything like it. Just as I
- 57:46was about to leave, the hellish beast
- 57:47appeared. Its presence made the music
- 57:53shift to a terrifying screech and
- 57:55transformed the level, desecrating the
- 57:57graves as a new floor made of
- 57:58blood-soaked bodies appeared. I could
- 58:02feel my heart beating out of control.
- 58:04There was no way for me to escape the
- 58:06monster while being that close. It
- 58:08lunged to catch me, but the blue being
- 58:11stepped in its way. The demon roared
- 58:13and began clawing at the stranger's leg
- 58:16. It began to shed tears of blood from
- 58:19its eyes. I wanted to save the angel,
- 58:22but there was nothing I could do. I had
- 58:24to honor its sacrifice and run. I ran
- 58:27as fast as I could, but the beast soon
- 58:29caught up to me, still devouring the
- 58:31body of the blue being. That sight
- 58:34shifted my attitude from fear to anger.
- 58:37Now I found myself hating that horrible
- 58:39monster. There was no doubt. In my mind
- 58:41, there was only rage and malice. I
- 58:43wanted to see it dead. So when I
- 58:46reached the end, I remembered how it
- 58:48responded to my insult in a trance; I
- 58:49spoke to it and said, "Are you going to
- 58:51make me pay?" And just as I expected,
- 58:54it replied with the following. I had no
- 59:11idea how it was going to carry out its
- 59:13threat, but nothing could have prepared
- 59:15me for the horrors that would come in
- 59:17the final world. Zenith. At this point,
- 59:21I was aware of the game's unnatural
- 59:23nature, but Zenith was different from
- 59:26the other worlds. While the others were
- 59:29certainly strange and sometimes
- 59:30terrifying, the world of Zenith was
- 59:32like a nightmare. I didn't have to go
- 59:36past the board screen to realize that
- 59:37something terrible was happening with
- 59:39Zenith. The first thing I noticed was
- 59:43the blood-red texture of the board and
- 59:44the music, whose melody was a
- 59:46horrifying whistle. I noticed I had
- 59:49Angirus and Solomon back. I felt better
- 59:51for a second. Then I scrolled to the
- 59:54right to see who my enemies would be
- 59:56this time. This time it was Destoroyah
- 59:59and Ghidorah. Returning to my side of
- 1:00:01the board, I decided I didn't have much
- 1:00:03choice but to stick to my usual routine
- 1:00:05of going to the question level before
- 1:00:07doing anything else. I wasn't prepared
- 1:00:09for what happened. It looked as if the
- 1:00:13face had been the victim of some
- 1:00:14terrible glitch. Is this what he meant
- 1:00:17before with the "You'll miss me" line?
- 1:00:20He knew what was going to happen to him
- 1:00:21. My thoughts stopped dead the moment I
- 1:00:25realized the screen was glitching and
- 1:00:27seemed to be falling apart while idle,
- 1:00:30so I quickly ran out of there. When I
- 1:00:34returned to the board, somehow I had
- 1:00:36gained a new monster. They hadn't even
- 1:00:39asked me if I wanted one. I tried to
- 1:00:41select it and this happened. The game's
- 1:00:52behavior was scaring me, and I hadn't
- 1:00:54even started the levels yet. I couldn't
- 1:00:58understand why they'd give me a new
- 1:00:59character just because and then deny me
- 1:01:01its use. For now, there was little I
- 1:01:05could do, so I entered the last TV
- 1:01:07screen. No animation, no music, just
- 1:01:10death. Every instinct I had was telling
- 1:01:14me to stop playing, just turn off the
- 1:01:16game, but I couldn't do that now in the
- 1:01:18final world. Besides, I felt the game
- 1:01:22owed me some answers. I noticed the
- 1:01:25first level was a red temple, so at
- 1:01:26least there would be something familiar
- 1:01:28with the level graphics and not
- 1:01:29something else. And I went with
- 1:01:32Godzilla, the monster I was most
- 1:01:34familiar with. Godzilla had been shrunk
- 1:01:37, the level meters and score were gone,
- 1:01:39and the blue temple faces were back. I
- 1:01:43tried to encourage myself by thinking
- 1:01:45that if this level is like the blue
- 1:01:47temple, then maybe that means there are
- 1:01:49no enemies to fight. How wrong I was.
- 1:01:53After a short walk, all the statues '
- 1:01:55eyes began to glow and a group of
- 1:01:57shadow labyrinth beasts came at me.
- 1:02:01Since they were coming from the right
- 1:02:03side of the screen, I had to fight my
- 1:02:05way through them. This battle tested my
- 1:02:08reflexes hard, but thanks to my speed,
- 1:02:10I made my way through the beasts. They
- 1:02:13dropped health restorers after dying,
- 1:02:15which helped me recover from the damage
- 1:02:17they inflicted on me. However, as I
- 1:02:21continued through the hallway, the
- 1:02:23statues' eyes glowed again, summoning
- 1:02:24another wave. They seemed to be the
- 1:02:28same number, but I was prepared and I
- 1:02:30took more damage. I had gone through
- 1:02:33four of those waves by the time I
- 1:02:35reached the end of the hall, where I
- 1:02:36blasted the last monsters into the
- 1:02:38abyss using atomic breath. At first it
- 1:02:42seemed like I’d reached a dead end,
- 1:02:44but after the statues 'eyes stopped
- 1:02:46glowing, a path of bricks slowly
- 1:02:48appeared before me. I followed the path
- 1:02:52until it ended at a wall where I had to
- 1:02:54go vertically by jumping across
- 1:02:56platforms. Along the way, I encountered
- 1:02:59new creatures and some kind of strange
- 1:03:01shrine, which had a statue of the hell
- 1:03:03beast and some other type of creature I
- 1:03:05don't recognize. As I went, I was
- 1:03:09pulled downward. I had to measure my
- 1:03:13jumps carefully to avoid the enemies
- 1:03:15that were abundant in this part of the
- 1:03:17stage. They didn't possess any attacks,
- 1:03:20but they could easily push you off the
- 1:03:22edge of a platform. At the end of this
- 1:03:25tunnel were a few small platforms
- 1:03:27floating over nothingness. I landed on
- 1:03:30one to the right of the screen and then
- 1:03:32something descended from above. It
- 1:03:35looked like the blue being from the
- 1:03:37graveyard, except now it was red and
- 1:03:38had a skull-like face. All the pleasant
- 1:03:41feelings I had from the blue being were
- 1:03:43not present with this red one. And as
- 1:03:47it hovered, its eye sockets began to
- 1:03:49glow just like the statues, summoning
- 1:03:51monsters to attack me. For sure, this
- 1:03:55was not the same type of benevolent
- 1:03:57being I encountered before. This has to
- 1:03:59be some kind of impostor. The combat
- 1:04:03was harrowing, as I started with almost
- 1:04:04half my health and had to deal with
- 1:04:06multiple opponents, plus the threat of
- 1:04:08gravity. To make things even worse.
- 1:04:13When the red being took damage, some of
- 1:04:14the panels fell away until only three
- 1:04:16remained. But I hadn't run out of luck
- 1:04:19just yet. Just when I thought it was
- 1:04:22over, I hit the red being one more time
- 1:04:24and it turned out one final hit was all
- 1:04:26it could take. As soon as the red being
- 1:04:30completely disintegrated, the game
- 1:04:32instantly returned me to the board. I
- 1:04:35moved Mothra over the stage closest to
- 1:04:37the red temple, which looked like an
- 1:04:39illegible mess of letters spelling the
- 1:04:40word "kill." As I had suspected, all
- 1:04:43the level's graphics were made of a
- 1:04:45mixture of letters. And Mothra, just
- 1:04:48like Godzilla, had been shrunk to half
- 1:04:51her size. Playing as Mothra made it
- 1:04:53easier to avoid the enemies.
- 1:04:55Nevertheless, they were determined to
- 1:04:57get to me. The first enemies I saw were
- 1:05:00some headless Gigan-like creatures. And
- 1:05:03further ahead were hybrid monsters made
- 1:05:05from previous bosses, like the thing
- 1:05:07with the Biollante head seen on the top
- 1:05:09right. A few minutes had passed without
- 1:05:12seeing anything new, and the level
- 1:05:14scrolled to another segment. The
- 1:05:17level's graphics also changed, now
- 1:05:20looking like a blood-soaked junkyard.
- 1:05:23The way everything in this level was
- 1:05:25red made it nauseating to look at. The
- 1:05:28enemies multiplied in number, never
- 1:05:30stopped coming after me, and became
- 1:05:32harder to avoid. At the end of the
- 1:05:36level, the situation reached a climax
- 1:05:38when the crowd of monsters fused into
- 1:05:40one huge, terrifying monster. After the
- 1:05:43initial shock passed, I discovered how
- 1:05:46to destroy this thing: by constantly
- 1:05:47firing eye beams at the group of heads
- 1:05:50that formed its torso. But even with
- 1:05:54this knowledge, this was an extremely
- 1:05:55difficult fight. I would say it was
- 1:05:58just as hard as fighting the Lunar
- 1:06:00Beast or the Chimera, if not more so.
- 1:06:04Its most common attack was lunging
- 1:06:06forward with its arms, covered in
- 1:06:08Gigan's saws and blades, which drained
- 1:06:10health instantly upon contact. When it
- 1:06:14was finished, the remaining monsters
- 1:06:16collapsed and the entire ground began
- 1:06:18to disintegrate and sink toward the
- 1:06:19bottom of the screen. Deciding which
- 1:06:26action to take next was more tense and
- 1:06:29difficult than any before. But
- 1:06:32ultimately, I had no way of knowing
- 1:06:34what the next levels would be like or
- 1:06:35how well-prepared my monsters were for
- 1:06:37them. The one closest to me, which I
- 1:06:41was about to enter, seemed to have
- 1:06:43thorny vines covering a pool of blood.
- 1:06:46I assumed it would be a level with
- 1:06:48rivers of blood like the dementia chase
- 1:06:50level. As such, I went with Anguirus,
- 1:06:54since his spinning move would give him
- 1:06:56higher speed while submerged. The level
- 1:07:00called Blood Lake looked just as I
- 1:07:01expected. Rivers of blood accompanied
- 1:07:04by thorn-covered vines that were
- 1:07:06scattered along the sides of the land.
- 1:07:09Apparently, all the Zenith levels would
- 1:07:12be this way. I walked forward without
- 1:07:15any interruption until my path reached
- 1:07:17a dead end. There was a gap between the
- 1:07:20ground I was walking on and the land to
- 1:07:21the right of the screen. I could have
- 1:07:24swum across and continued walking to
- 1:07:26the right, but due to the massive clump
- 1:07:29of vines, there was nowhere to go. I
- 1:07:32descended into the blood, slowly
- 1:07:34sinking to the bottom. There were
- 1:07:36aquatic enemies everywhere, and they
- 1:07:39were difficult to avoid. The Black
- 1:07:41Shark in particular was very aggressive
- 1:07:43and difficult to deal with, but luckily
- 1:07:45I only encountered one. As the scene
- 1:07:49became more and more crowded, I swam to
- 1:07:51the surface to find it filled with
- 1:07:52floating corpses. "Creepy, but at least
- 1:07:56it's not a threat," I thought. Until
- 1:07:59they all came to life and jumped on me.
- 1:08:02They tried to sink me and drained my
- 1:08:04life while doing so. They all attacked
- 1:08:07as a group. I had to curl into a ball
- 1:08:09and roll over them to get them away,
- 1:08:11retreating quickly. It wasn't long
- 1:08:13before I reached another dirt path. I
- 1:08:16had to destroy many vines, as well as
- 1:08:19deal with more very disturbing enemies.
- 1:08:22Then I was interrupted by a screen. The
- 1:08:27screen was like that for about 30
- 1:08:29seconds. Then, when I returned to the
- 1:08:31level, I was in front of another dead
- 1:08:33end and a pregnant humanoid creature
- 1:08:35hanging from above, strangled by
- 1:08:36something coming out of its stomach.
- 1:08:40Instantly, the creature's belly was
- 1:08:42slashed from the inside, while the
- 1:08:44lower part of the body was ripped and
- 1:08:45separated from the torso. The level
- 1:08:48boss was revealed and came flying at me
- 1:08:51, forcing me to retreat. The bat was a
- 1:08:54very fast boss and difficult to hit.
- 1:08:57While walking on the ground, the
- 1:08:58monster opened its mouth and launched
- 1:09:00some green needles. I jumped over them
- 1:09:03and managed to land a hit on its head.
- 1:09:07While the bat was flying, it shot a
- 1:09:09stream of fire from its eye sockets and
- 1:09:11began trying to hit me with the flames.
- 1:09:14This cycle repeated about three times
- 1:09:16until the monster was defeated. With
- 1:09:21most of my health gone, I went back to
- 1:09:23the edge of the level and the huge vine
- 1:09:25that was blocking the exit was gone.
- 1:09:28Now there are only two levels left to
- 1:09:30go, so I chose to use Godzilla again
- 1:09:32for the next level and Solomon for the
- 1:09:34finale. The penultimate level was what
- 1:09:37I call the organic level, which was the
- 1:09:40most visually unpleasant of all. Right
- 1:09:43from the start, I could see that the
- 1:09:45graphics were radically different. They
- 1:09:47no longer looked like NES graphics. The
- 1:09:50atmosphere was horrible and menacing.
- 1:09:52Only a few seconds had passed before
- 1:09:54something appeared. It's hard to
- 1:09:56describe most of this level. Everything
- 1:09:59had this disturbing semi-realistic
- 1:10:01appearance. Most of the enemies looked
- 1:10:05halfway between real animals and bloody
- 1:10:07, deformed lumps with teeth. While most
- 1:10:10levels involved going to the right to
- 1:10:13reach the exit. The path of this level
- 1:10:16was basically going down, walking to
- 1:10:18the edge of a platform and jumping onto
- 1:10:20a lower one. Also, some enemies acted
- 1:10:24as if they were aware you had to jump
- 1:10:26down and could stay at the edge of a
- 1:10:28lower platform waiting for you. When
- 1:10:32this happened, I had to back up and
- 1:10:34wait until the monster had left. As I
- 1:10:40moved forward, I found platforms
- 1:10:42stacked on top of each other with
- 1:10:43little space in between, resembling a
- 1:10:45maze. This meant I couldn't jump,
- 1:10:49making it more difficult to escape from
- 1:10:51the enemies. Fortunately, the only
- 1:10:55enemies capable of fitting into those
- 1:10:57mazes were the four-legged beasts seen
- 1:10:58earlier in the level. Adding to the
- 1:11:02difficulty, there were also long
- 1:11:04worm-like monsters that could rise up
- 1:11:06between the platforms and catch you.
- 1:11:09The only attack they responded to was
- 1:11:11the atomic breath, which made them sink
- 1:11:13back down. I think I was wandering for
- 1:11:17about 5 minutes until I found the end,
- 1:11:19but this level was making me physically
- 1:11:21ill. The tension was getting to me, and
- 1:11:25having to look at all those disgusting
- 1:11:27places made me want to throw up. I was
- 1:11:30about to pause the game and look for a
- 1:11:32bag, but I was able to hold it back.
- 1:11:35Finally, at the end, it was time for
- 1:11:37another boss fight. It was really ugly,
- 1:11:40but not as horrific as I had feared it
- 1:11:42might be. It was attached to the ground
- 1:11:45when I first saw it, but after several
- 1:11:47hits, it detached and started to float.
- 1:11:50It moved quickly and used this to its
- 1:11:52advantage. It stopped doing that after
- 1:11:54a few well-placed hits to the face. The
- 1:11:57pink area of its upper jaw was a weak
- 1:12:00point, so many hits there would weaken
- 1:12:02it. Its health was at a critical point
- 1:12:06by now, so I blasted it with atomic
- 1:12:07breath, against which it had no defense
- 1:12:09. In the last moment of the battle, the
- 1:12:13monster lost its mind, moving at full
- 1:12:15speed. I had to crouch under it and
- 1:12:18then hit it when it returned. Several
- 1:12:20more hits and it was destroyed. Only
- 1:12:23one last level remained to go to. I
- 1:12:25didn't hesitate. I selected Solomon and
- 1:12:27went in. As soon as I started, there
- 1:12:31was already an enemy ready to attack, a
- 1:12:33centaur wielding a whip, and it wasn't
- 1:12:35alone. When I began to fight, several
- 1:12:38more centaurs appeared. Coming from
- 1:12:41both sides of the screen at the same
- 1:12:43time, there were too many to handle.
- 1:12:46Solomon's flight saved me from taking
- 1:12:48too much damage at the start of the
- 1:12:50level. The centaurs kept coming after
- 1:12:53me, but they seemed unable to jump.
- 1:12:55After escaping the centaurs, I ran into
- 1:12:58several new creatures. As I tried to
- 1:13:02avoid the jumping sword-mouth enemies
- 1:13:04mid-flight, I got close to the lava
- 1:13:06surface and a creature emerged and
- 1:13:07tried to grab me. It didn't succeed,
- 1:13:12but careful maneuvering would be
- 1:13:14totally necessary to avoid an instant
- 1:13:16death here. As new enemies kept
- 1:13:19appearing, the level soon became very
- 1:13:21difficult. I had a lot of trouble with
- 1:13:24the red demons that stood on top of
- 1:13:26mountains throwing fire. I would
- 1:13:29eliminate them by waiting until they
- 1:13:31turned around and hitting them, making
- 1:13:32them fall into the lava. As I kept
- 1:13:35moving forward, I started to feel very
- 1:13:37hot, which made it hard to concentrate.
- 1:13:40I even had to stop periodically to get
- 1:13:43water because of it. This was almost
- 1:13:45certainly due to the game and not my
- 1:13:48imagination, but I kept pushing that
- 1:13:50thought out of my head. I didn't want
- 1:13:53to think about it. At the end of the
- 1:13:55stage, I found the boss rising from the
- 1:13:57lava. When it walked onto land, I saw
- 1:14:00that it was gigantic, several times
- 1:14:02larger than Solomon's size. I was about
- 1:14:05to fly up and attack it when it opened
- 1:14:07its mouth and let out a huge blast of
- 1:14:09fire. I had to dodge the flames by
- 1:14:13flying and then get close enough to the
- 1:14:15monster to fire a heat beam at its face
- 1:14:17. The beast had to wait a while between
- 1:14:21each use of its fire breath, as it
- 1:14:23seemed to cost a great amount of energy
- 1:14:25. I used that time to attack it. As its
- 1:14:29health decreased, it moved faster and
- 1:14:32faster, but after a few hits, it was
- 1:14:34defeated, falling backward into the
- 1:14:35lava from which it had emerged. And at
- 1:14:39that moment, the final stage had been
- 1:14:41completed. Finally, there were two
- 1:14:45bosses left to take down and a final
- 1:14:47encounter with the infernal beast. For
- 1:14:49some reason, I thought Ghidorah would
- 1:14:51be easier to defeat, so I confronted
- 1:14:53him first. Ghidorah was more powerful
- 1:14:56and relentless than ever. He
- 1:14:58continuously hit me with his gravity
- 1:15:00beams, which dealt more damage than
- 1:15:02usual. He could attack with each of his
- 1:15:05heads, pushing me back and making it
- 1:15:07impossible to get close enough to hit
- 1:15:09him. However, I had the idea to wait
- 1:15:13for one of the heads to lunge at me and
- 1:15:15immediately blast him with atomic
- 1:15:17breath. It worked. And to my surprise,
- 1:15:21the attack had actually destroyed
- 1:15:22Ghidorah's middle head. It only took a
- 1:15:26few seconds before I realized what this
- 1:15:28would lead to. Ghidorah had used the
- 1:15:31power of the glitch to transform into
- 1:15:33Mecha-King Ghidorah. Mecha-King
- 1:15:35Ghidorah's first attack was the
- 1:15:37deadliest. Very similar to Gigan's saw,
- 1:15:40it immobilized the monster and quickly
- 1:15:42drained the health bar. Fortunately,
- 1:15:45before Ghidorah could do much damage,
- 1:15:47the time for the fight ran out. I
- 1:15:51needed to defeat Mecha-Ghidorah quickly
- 1:15:53to prevent him from using his
- 1:15:55mechanical arm, so I sent Solomon to
- 1:15:57fight him. Solomon was faster, so by
- 1:16:00unleashing slashes and heat beams
- 1:16:02without pause, the monster soon met his
- 1:16:04end. With Ghidorah defeated, I was
- 1:16:08returned to the board. I now
- 1:16:10outnumbered the enemy four monsters to
- 1:16:13one, and victory seemed within reach. I
- 1:16:17began the battle against Destoroyah
- 1:16:18with Mothra, who although weaker, was
- 1:16:20much better equipped to dodge and
- 1:16:22counter Destoroyah's attacks. It was a
- 1:16:26bad decision, since despite this,
- 1:16:27Mothra's attacks did very little damage
- 1:16:30to Destoroyah and I had to move very
- 1:16:32fast to avoid his attacks. But even if
- 1:16:35it was almost impossible to defeat
- 1:16:37Destoroyah with Mothra, I still had
- 1:16:38three other monsters. In the last part
- 1:16:42of the fight I used Godzilla without
- 1:16:44much strategy, I simply attacked as
- 1:16:46brutally and as fast as I could. On his
- 1:16:49last health bar, Destoroyah attempted
- 1:16:51one last counterattack, an energy beam
- 1:16:53from his chest. I don't know how
- 1:16:56powerful it could have been, because
- 1:16:58just before he could fire, I threw a
- 1:17:00punch into his chest cavity, destroying
- 1:17:02him. At that moment it was done. The
- 1:17:05last boss was finished. I had come so
- 1:17:08far to reach this point, but I was
- 1:17:14terrified. I really didn't want to know
- 1:17:16what this final encounter would be like
- 1:17:18. Before I could think more about it, I
- 1:17:21moved Godzilla over the last icon and
- 1:17:23started the stage. When the level
- 1:17:26started, there was simply nothing, just
- 1:17:28Godzilla and a black screen. I walked
- 1:17:31back and forth, I fired the atomic
- 1:17:34breath. Nothing happened until I heard
- 1:17:36something. Oh, God. That was my first
- 1:17:46thought when I realized that I had to
- 1:17:47fight the red monster, the creature
- 1:17:49that had been tormenting me for almost
- 1:17:51the entire game. How could I be able to
- 1:17:54fight something that could kill with a
- 1:17:56touch? It seemed completely impossible.
- 1:18:00Fortunately, the red creature didn't
- 1:18:02seem to be able to land its killing
- 1:18:04blows. But despite that, the battle
- 1:18:07that would come would be very difficult
- 1:18:09. If I had had any real understanding
- 1:18:11of what I was getting into before
- 1:18:13starting the battle, I never would have
- 1:18:15done it. The red monster reached me and
- 1:18:19clawed at Godzilla. When those claws
- 1:18:21cut through him, I felt it. I know it's
- 1:18:25common for people to flinch when their
- 1:18:27video game character gets hit or loses
- 1:18:29a life. But this wasn't the case. This
- 1:18:33was real, genuine physical pain. I
- 1:18:36hadn't suffered any actual injury, but
- 1:18:38it just felt as if my shoulder had been
- 1:18:40torn apart. I had seen and experienced
- 1:18:43many unpleasant things up to that point
- 1:18:45, but that the game could cause me real
- 1:18:47pain topped it all. Yes, I would have
- 1:18:51been disappointed not to see the end,
- 1:18:53but the risk wasn't worth it. I was
- 1:18:56about to take one last screenshot and
- 1:18:57quit the game when I noticed something
- 1:18:59else. I couldn't move. I was paralyzed
- 1:19:04in my seat. The only muscles I could
- 1:19:07move were my arms and head. As the
- 1:19:10terror grew within me, a new message
- 1:19:12appeared on the screen. I started to
- 1:19:23scream, but only a weak, muffled sound
- 1:19:25came out. I desperately tried to force
- 1:19:28my body to move, but nothing happened.
- 1:19:32Since the red creature could hear what
- 1:19:33I was saying, I tried to beg him to let
- 1:19:35me go. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm sorry
- 1:19:39I insulted you. I didn't mean to. I
- 1:19:42didn't know things could be this
- 1:19:44serious. Please, just let me leave. If
- 1:19:48you let me go, I promise I'll never
- 1:19:50tell anyone about the game or turn it
- 1:19:53on again. To which he replied to me.
- 1:20:08The verdict couldn't have been clearer.
- 1:20:11If I couldn't kill the red demon, then
- 1:20:13he would kill me. Like an idiot, I had
- 1:20:16been playing with something I didn't
- 1:20:18understand. And now it could cost me my
- 1:20:20life. There was only one way to get out
- 1:20:23of this alive. I had to kill the red
- 1:20:25demon. Everything happened so fast.
- 1:20:29Just like in the chase levels, the
- 1:20:30demon moved at a horrific speed. I
- 1:20:34barely had time to process any thoughts
- 1:20:36, and therefore, there was no time to
- 1:20:38form a strategy. I had to rely solely
- 1:20:42on my wits and my reflexes. To make
- 1:20:45matters even worse. There was no way to
- 1:20:48predict what kind of attack he might
- 1:20:49use, so I constantly had to be on the
- 1:20:51offensive and the defensive. I felt
- 1:20:54every hit that Godzilla took. They all
- 1:20:57caused me tremendous pain, unlike
- 1:20:58anything I had ever felt. I tried with
- 1:21:02all my might to avoid the damage, but
- 1:21:03every attack I dodged left me
- 1:21:05vulnerable to another and the pain
- 1:21:06could only get worse. After jumping
- 1:21:10over me, Red's eyes began to glow. I
- 1:21:13moved back as fast as I could and
- 1:21:15ducked, but there was no way to dodge
- 1:21:16this. When this hit me, I actually
- 1:21:20screamed. I screamed so loud someone
- 1:21:22should have heard me, but it didn't
- 1:21:24happen. I tried to pause the game, but
- 1:21:27it was impossible. I immediately
- 1:21:30counterattacked with atomic breath
- 1:21:31again and again until the power meter
- 1:21:33was completely empty. I wanted the
- 1:21:37creature to hurt as much as I did. Just
- 1:21:40before the timer ran out, Red
- 1:21:42transformed into his aquatic form. I
- 1:21:46didn't think the timer would still
- 1:21:47affect a battle like this, but it did.
- 1:21:51I’m grateful for it because it gave
- 1:21:53me a few minutes to collect my thoughts
- 1:21:55and decide what to do next. I chose to
- 1:21:59fight the next two forms with the
- 1:22:01monsters that had encountered them
- 1:22:03before, so Anguirus was next. That
- 1:22:06probably wasn’t a very smart idea,
- 1:22:08but it’s what I did. I jumped and
- 1:22:11blasted my power in his face, moving
- 1:22:13off-screen where I couldn't reach him.
- 1:22:16Then, a wave of massive mines began to
- 1:22:19fall from above. I felt this was unfair
- 1:22:22, so I shouted out. If you're going to
- 1:22:24cheat, then why even let me use the
- 1:22:27controller? And at that moment, he came
- 1:22:30charging at me furiously from the top
- 1:22:32left of the screen downward. Now I
- 1:22:35wouldn't even be able to see where the
- 1:22:37next attack might come from. He kept
- 1:22:40hitting me from different angles
- 1:22:42randomly, and I kept moving and
- 1:22:44spinning constantly around him. Seconds
- 1:22:47passed and Anguirus was almost finished
- 1:22:49, but together we had forced him to
- 1:22:51change to his flying form. Time ran out
- 1:22:54, so the next turn was Mothra's.
- 1:22:57Deciding to fight Red with Mothra was a
- 1:22:59terrible idea. Mothra was instantly
- 1:23:02overwhelmed by Red and her life meter
- 1:23:04was devastated in a mere 15 seconds.
- 1:23:07Once Mothra's health was down to two
- 1:23:10bars, Red did something I didn't see
- 1:23:12coming. He lunged, grabbed Mothra, and
- 1:23:14ate her. After Mothra was devoured, I
- 1:23:22felt agonizing pain, as if I were being
- 1:23:24crushed to death. I even felt like I
- 1:23:27might faint. Mothra had been killed by
- 1:23:29my stupidity and I would share the pain
- 1:23:32. The pain, combined with the fact that
- 1:23:34I was unable to move, was driving me
- 1:23:36crazy. I just wanted this to end, but
- 1:23:40there was still hope. I had one last
- 1:23:42monster left with full health. Solomon.
- 1:23:45If any of them had a chance to save my
- 1:23:48life now, it would be him. Apparently,
- 1:23:51Solomon has a bit of history with the
- 1:23:53red demon, since when the fight started
- 1:23:55, this dialogue appeared. Red caught me
- 1:24:16by surprise again by immediately
- 1:24:18burning me with his demonic fire a
- 1:24:20second time. As much as it hurt, it
- 1:24:23actually worked in my favor. Solomon
- 1:24:26started with full health and still had
- 1:24:28plenty, but now Red had used all his
- 1:24:30energy and couldn't use his ultimate
- 1:24:31weapon anymore. As he was led to the
- 1:24:35end of his health bar, Red turned his
- 1:24:37whole body to face the screen and flew
- 1:24:39upward. He then delivered a strong blow
- 1:24:42downward in an attempt to crush Solomon
- 1:24:44. When that failed to work, he tried to
- 1:24:48devour Solomon like he did with Mothra,
- 1:24:50but he wouldn't eat my monster this
- 1:24:52time. I thought I had won, but
- 1:25:09something was wrong. Red wasn't sinking
- 1:25:12to the bottom and I still couldn't move
- 1:25:15. The demon was still alive. After his
- 1:25:24apparent defeat by Solomon, the red
- 1:25:26monster had rebuilt his body into this
- 1:25:28gigantic final form, transporting us to
- 1:25:30a scorching hell in the process. It was
- 1:25:34reminiscent of our first meeting,
- 1:25:36except now the landscape, just like
- 1:25:38Red's true power, had become very real.
- 1:25:42Facing Red's massive amount of health,
- 1:25:44my defeat was imminent. Solomon was my
- 1:25:48strongest monster, but even he didn't
- 1:25:50stand a chance. It was just like trying
- 1:25:53to fight a mountain. In a matter of
- 1:25:55seconds, Solomon was overcome, fell to
- 1:25:58the ground, and was crushed to death.
- 1:26:00The sadistic demon took his time as he
- 1:26:03ended Solomon's life. I could tell he
- 1:26:06enjoyed our pain. This is impossible.
- 1:26:19I'm a dead man, I thought. I had no
- 1:26:22choice but to send another monster to
- 1:26:24its death. Everyone was going to die. I
- 1:26:26just hoped they would forgive me. After
- 1:26:29decreasing the creature's health by a
- 1:26:31minuscule amount, Anguirus was also
- 1:26:33eliminated. Red unleashed a rain of
- 1:26:36flaming burning needles to his face
- 1:26:38until he collapsed. Now, as if that
- 1:26:47weren't enough, the game even knew my
- 1:26:50name. It seemed as if the game had been
- 1:26:53created exclusively to torment me to
- 1:26:55death. I was returned to the board to
- 1:26:58send Godzilla to his final post. There
- 1:27:00was nothing left on the board, only the
- 1:27:03icons for Red, Godzilla, and that fifth
- 1:27:05monster. Amidst everything that had
- 1:27:08happened, I had completely forgotten
- 1:27:10about it. Once again, I tried to select
- 1:27:12it. I cursed it, pleaded, screamed for
- 1:27:15it to do something, anything to help me
- 1:27:17, but it was in vain. There was only
- 1:27:21one thing left to do. I knew Godzilla
- 1:27:23wouldn't have any more of a chance than
- 1:27:25the rest of the monsters. And how did
- 1:27:27it go? Red ended up devouring him. But
- 1:27:30maybe, just maybe, now that all the
- 1:27:32other monsters were gone, the fifth
- 1:27:34monster could finally wake up. I
- 1:27:37struggled to select the creature's icon
- 1:27:39and pressed the buttons as fast as I
- 1:27:41could. That was when Red decided he had
- 1:27:45done enough, and before I could
- 1:27:47activate the monster, he dealt the
- 1:27:49killing blow. The game over screen
- 1:27:59appeared and slowly my hands began to
- 1:28:02go numb and unresponsive. But as my
- 1:28:05vision faded, I was still trying to
- 1:28:07press the buttons. Surely Red thought
- 1:28:11he had finally won and was starting to
- 1:28:13end my existence. He was wrong. Red's
- 1:28:19power was being challenged by another
- 1:28:21force. It was keeping him from killing
- 1:28:24me, and when my vision returned, I saw
- 1:28:26it. It was that blue being I had seen
- 1:28:29before. From what she said, apparently
- 1:28:32her name was Melissa. I asked her how
- 1:28:34it was possible she was here if I had
- 1:28:37seen the red demon kill her myself. Her
- 1:28:40words stirred something inside me. I
- 1:28:42wasn't going to die this way. I had to
- 1:28:45fight to save my life and perhaps, in
- 1:28:47some way, save that mysterious blue
- 1:28:49being too. With her help, the fifth
- 1:28:53monster was finally released. It was
- 1:28:56time to end this once and for all.
- 1:29:01Together, we could banish this cursed
- 1:29:03hellspawn out of existence. Acacius was
- 1:29:07by far the strongest playable monster
- 1:29:09in the game. He had to be if we were to
- 1:29:12have any chance of surviving. His
- 1:29:15punches involved turning his hands into
- 1:29:17blades, which caused tremendous damage.
- 1:29:20But Red had more than enough health to
- 1:29:22burn through. In the end, this would
- 1:29:25come down to pure skill. With one final
- 1:29:46blow, Red would be destroyed. Slowly,
- 1:30:12the paralysis faded and I was able to
- 1:30:14stand up again. We had done it. That
- 1:30:17blue being trapped inside the game had
- 1:30:20been avenged, and I felt an
- 1:30:21overwhelming joy. Tears of joy fell
- 1:30:24down my face and I broke down crying.
- 1:30:26Everything that had happened,
- 1:30:28everything I had discovered, and now
- 1:30:30the game was coming to an end. But
- 1:30:32before she and the others left, Melissa
- 1:30:35had something to tell me. La la la.
- 1:31:04Once I was able to start walking again,
- 1:31:07the first thing I did was unplug it,
- 1:31:09remove the cartridge, and put them in
- 1:31:11different drawers. I checked the
- 1:31:14computer. All the screenshots you have
- 1:31:17seen until now were saved. I backed up
- 1:31:20all the images onto a flash drive
- 1:31:22before turning off the computer, just
- 1:31:24in case. After that, I fell into bed
- 1:31:27and immediately lost consciousness. It
- 1:31:30wasn't a restful sleep, but one of
- 1:31:32total exhaustion. The first thought I
- 1:31:35remember coming to my mind was, "What
- 1:31:36the hell happened last night?" I
- 1:31:39thought about it for a short while
- 1:31:41until it occurred to me to contact the
- 1:31:43person who got the game to begin with,
- 1:31:46my friend Billy. So I called him and
- 1:31:48simply told him to come over to my
- 1:31:50apartment. I showed him the screenshots
- 1:31:53and gave him a brief summary of what
- 1:31:54had happened. At first, he thought I
- 1:31:57was playing a prank on him, but he soon
- 1:31:59realized that was not the case. Once he
- 1:32:02found out this was real, he was left
- 1:32:04speechless. He made it clear that there
- 1:32:06was no way he had tampered with the
- 1:32:08game and had no idea about any of this.
- 1:32:11So then I asked Billy the obvious
- 1:32:13question: where did you get it? I got a
- 1:32:16simple answer. I got it from another
- 1:32:19friend of mine I trade games with. So
- 1:32:21Billy called the person who had gotten
- 1:32:23him the game. When I mentioned what
- 1:32:25happened, his tone changed and he hung
- 1:32:28up on us abruptly. Billy and I haven't
- 1:32:31talked much since then. Even though
- 1:32:34I've told him that's not the case, I
- 1:32:36get the impression that Billy thinks
- 1:32:37what happened with the game is his
- 1:32:39fault. It was very hard for me to do
- 1:32:42anything other than think about the
- 1:32:44game. There were too many unanswered
- 1:32:47questions. Who was Red? Who was that
- 1:32:50blue being? How did they get there?
- 1:32:53Were the game characters really alive?
- 1:32:57Why did all this happen with this game?
- 1:32:59I was truly facing a real demon. But
- 1:33:03what kept me awake for many nights was
- 1:33:05the uncertainty of knowing that Red
- 1:33:07clearly knew me and even knew my name.
- 1:33:11How or when did he? This is a question
- 1:33:14I cannot get out of my head. Since then
- 1:33:17, I can't shake this feeling of being
- 1:33:19watched at all times. So I decided to
- 1:33:24sell the game online. This may be
- 1:33:26selfish, but it has nothing to do with
- 1:33:29money. I don't care how much or how
- 1:33:31little they might pay for the game. I
- 1:33:34can't obsess over this forever and the
- 1:33:36only way I can deal with this is by
- 1:33:38putting the game out of my life. So
- 1:33:41this brings me to the main reasons why
- 1:33:43I've created a summary of those events.
- 1:33:47First, to note the details while I can
- 1:33:48still remember them, and second, so
- 1:33:50that anyone who wishes to get this game
- 1:33:52knows what they are getting into. I
- 1:33:55cannot guarantee the safety of anyone
- 1:33:57who plays the game at all, but to the
- 1:33:59new owner of the game, remember this:
- 1:34:01be careful, and if it feels like the
- 1:34:03game is literally playing with your
- 1:34:05mind, turn it off immediately.
