- 2:02starts right now.
- 2:05>> This is NBC Nightly News with Tom Yamz.
- 2:12>> Hey, good evening. We thank you for
- 2:13joining us on this Thursday night. We
- 2:15begin with a major update in the case of
- 2:17accused CEO killer Luigi Manioni with
- 2:21sources telling our team he's expected
- 2:23to plead guilty during a court
- 2:25appearance tomorrow. In a stunning
- 2:27reversal, Manion is now expected to
- 2:29plead guilty in federal court where he
- 2:31faces stalking charges in connection to
- 2:34this moment, the killing of former
- 2:35United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson
- 2:38back in 2024. We don't know yet which
- 2:41stalking charges he will plead guilty
- 2:42to, but he could change his mind at any
- 2:44time. He's set to go to trial in New
- 2:47York in a state murder case against him
- 2:48just weeks from now. If Manion does
- 2:51plead guilty in the federal case, his
- 2:53team may try to get the more serious
- 2:55state charges dropped. Our Laura Jarrett
- 2:57starts us off tonight.
- 3:00>> Tonight, a dramatic reversal for Luigi
- 3:02Manion, now expected to plead guilty in
- 3:05federal court. According to sources
- 3:07familiar with Friday's planned hearing,
- 3:09the 28-year-old had plead not guilty to
- 3:12federal stalking charges accused of
- 3:14killing United Healthc Care CEO Brian
- 3:16Thompson on a Manhattan sidewalk in
- 3:192024. But the exact terms of any
- 3:22proposed plea deal with prosecutors
- 3:24unclear tonight. Manion's lawyers in the
- 3:26Justice Department declining to comment.
- 3:29>> There's a conference scheduled for 11:00
- 3:31a.m. on Friday. Um, and that that that's
- 3:33all we can say at this time. Sources
- 3:35caution plea talks continue. Manion met
- 3:38with his lawyers this morning and can
- 3:40still back out. The judge overseeing the
- 3:42federal case would also have to sign off
- 3:44on any agreement to make it official.
- 3:47But the spectre of a deal comes at a
- 3:49crucial time for Manion. He's currently
- 3:51set to go to trial in New York State
- 3:53Court early next month. Prosecutors here
- 3:56pursuing secondderee murder and gun
- 3:58charges and he's plead not guilty in the
- 4:01closely watched case that's already seen
- 4:03twists. Earlier this summer, the defense
- 4:06team briefly floating the possibility of
- 4:08arguing Manion was suffering from an
- 4:10extreme emotional disturbance, only to
- 4:13withdraw that suggestion a day later.
- 4:16But his attorneys have consistently
- 4:17maintained he's been treated unfairly,
- 4:20facing both federal and state charges at
- 4:23the same time.
- 4:24>> Double jeopardy is a big thing here,
- 4:26right? Mr. Manion is being charged in in
- 4:28three different cases for for one
- 4:30incident.
- 4:31>> Laura joins us now live in studio. So
- 4:33Laura, talk to us about the defense
- 4:34strategy here. If he indeed does plead
- 4:36guilty to this federal charge, what
- 4:38happens with the state case? Because
- 4:39they're trying to pull something off
- 4:40here, right?
- 4:41>> The defense is likely to point to New
- 4:42York law, Tom, which essentially says
- 4:44you cannot be prosecuted twice for the
- 4:46same act, the same criminal transaction.
- 4:48And here they're going to say it's all
- 4:50about the killing of Brian Thompson. And
- 4:51so even though the federal charges for
- 4:53stalking, the state charges for murder,
- 4:55it's all about the same thing. Now the
- 4:57prosecution is going to push back on
- 4:58that and say, "No, no, no. These are
- 5:00different charges, different elements.
- 5:01It's the same transaction, but there are
- 5:03different harms here. And so that's what
- 5:05the judge is going to have to decide.
- 5:06But bottom line, Tom, there may be
- 5:08reasons that Manion actually wants to
- 5:10plead guilty in the federal case.
- 5:12Spending time behind bars for the rest
- 5:14of your life in a federal penitentiary
- 5:16is very different than a state prison.
- 5:17>> It's a good point and we'll be in court
- 5:19tomorrow. We'll learn a lot more. Thank
- 5:20you for that, Laura. Next to the
- 5:21devastating images coming out of
- 5:23Indiana, where the governor there has
- 5:25now declared a statewide disaster
- 5:28emergency. Maggie Vesa and her team with
- 5:30the families returning to their ruined
- 5:32homes as more rain is on the way.
- 5:36>> Tonight, families across the storm zone
- 5:38bracing for new rounds of heavy rain and
- 5:41dangerous flooding as they try to clean
- 5:43up the damage already left behind east
- 5:45of Indianapolis in Cambridge City,
- 5:47Indiana.
- 5:49>> My fridge is not over.
- 5:52The whole house is trash. We were with
- 5:54Brooke Boomershine and her boyfriend
- 5:56Timothy as they returned to their home
- 5:58for the first time after swimming to
- 6:00safety Wednesday morning. That's their
- 6:02blue house right there, surrounded by
- 6:04rushing waters. A man rescued from his
- 6:07marooned boat out front.
- 6:09>> I'm so sorry. How are you even taking
- 6:12this in right now?
- 6:14>> I'm not.
- 6:16I have six kids.
- 6:18>> You have six kids?
- 6:19>> Yeah, they were supposed to start school
- 6:21yesterday.
- 6:22We worked our whole life for this.
- 6:26>> The couple telling me they have flood
- 6:28insurance but just learned most of their
- 6:30possessions aren't covered. Indiana's
- 6:32governor now declaring a statewide
- 6:34disaster emergency after scenes like
- 6:36this in nearby Hagerstown. A front
- 6:38loader rescuing multiple people. This as
- 6:41conditions have forced authorities to
- 6:43suspend the search for a missing
- 6:45teenager in the Missinoa River. One of
- 6:48four jumping off a bridge overnight.
- 6:50Three others rescued uninjured.
- 6:52>> It's all hands on deck. Rivers are still
- 6:54rising right now.
- 6:56>> Powerful flood waters washing away part
- 6:58of Interstate 70. Crews racing to repair
- 7:01and reopen that major thoroughfare. And
- 7:04we're seeing new video from Tuesday's
- 7:06massive system. Two South Dakota Highway
- 7:09Patrol troopers nearly struck by
- 7:11lightning.
- 7:13>> And Maggie Vespa joins us now live from
- 7:15northeast of Indianapolis in Anderson,
- 7:17Indiana. And Maggie, every time we see
- 7:19you, we see more water and families in
- 7:21that part of the city where you are now
- 7:23being ordered to evacuate.
- 7:26>> Yeah, Tom, families in other parts of
- 7:27the city as well. I mean, you can see
- 7:28here water creeping up around these
- 7:31homes with the White River here still
- 7:33rising, expected to crest hours from now
- 7:35at a record-breaking 24 ft and this with
- 7:38more rain falling. Tom.
- 7:40>> All right, Maggie Vespa for us. Maggie,
- 7:41stay safe out there. We are also
- 7:43tracking a rare weather event about to
- 7:45hit another state. Imagine a hurricane
- 7:47hitting a volcano. It could happen in
- 7:50Hawaii this week. So, I want to bring in
- 7:51Bill Karens now. Bill, tell us and our
- 7:53viewers what you're tracking tonight.
- 7:55>> Yes. So, tropical storm LA formed and
- 7:57this is going to be a close call. It may
- 7:59end up turning to be a hurricane hitting
- 8:01the Big Island. That has never happened
- 8:02in our recorded history. So, here's how
- 8:04we're looking right now. It's still kind
- 8:05of a weakest storm. It's going to begin
- 8:07to strengthen over the next 24 hours.
- 8:09Saturday morning, it makes its closest
- 8:11approach to the south side of the Big
- 8:13Island of Hawaii. Winds possibly around
- 8:1575 miles per hour. But if you know
- 8:17anything about the volcano, it's
- 8:19extremely tall and that's going to mean
- 8:20a ton of rain, Tom. We could see one to
- 8:23two feet on the volcano.
- 8:24>> Yeah, Bill. So, you have Kilawea
- 8:26possibly erupting. It was erupting
- 8:27earlier. What happens when all that
- 8:29water and wind comes over it?
- 8:31>> One of the biggest steam baths that
- 8:32we've ever seen, Tom. We are going to be
- 8:34watching all of that hot lava that
- 8:36happened in the last 24 hours, the rain
- 8:38hitting it, it'll make a form of crust,
- 8:39it'll hiss, and there'll just be a huge
- 8:41steam bath all over the crater. A wild
- 8:44weather event. All right, Bill Karens,
- 8:45we thank you for that. Tonight, the
- 8:46aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham
- 8:49Lincoln, and its crew of 5,000 sailors
- 8:51and marines now set to head home from
- 8:53the M East with sailors families raising
- 8:56some big alarms about poor living
- 8:58conditions. Plus, a sailor even going
- 9:00overboard. Here's Gabe Gutierrez.
- 9:02Tonight, with growing concerns about
- 9:04deteriorating living conditions aboard
- 9:06the aircraft carrier critical in
- 9:08carrying out strikes against Iran, a US
- 9:10official telling NBC News that USS
- 9:12Abraham Lincoln is now set to sail home
- 9:15after a lengthy deployment. The switch
- 9:17comes amid alarming complaints from
- 9:19service members and their families,
- 9:21including these limited meal portions.
- 9:23And now, a US official says one sailor
- 9:25went overboard and was quickly rescued.
- 9:27The ship has not made a port call in 244
- 9:31days, a record.
- 9:32>> It's been difficult. It's longer than um
- 9:35she's experienced. Typical deployments
- 9:37have been 6 to 8 months.
- 9:39>> Melanie Stow says her daughter has been
- 9:41aboard the Lincoln since last October.
- 9:43>> They had hanger bays that would not
- 9:45close, so they were taken on water into
- 9:47the the lower hangers. Um I know that
- 9:50they've had um some issues with um some
- 9:53of the plumbing. Two US officials tell
- 9:56NBC News, Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan
- 9:58Kaine has warned President Trump and
- 9:59Defense Secretary Hexath about lengthy
- 10:02deployments and declining morale. Today,
- 10:04Hexath was asked about conditions aboard
- 10:07the Lincoln.
- 10:08>> Completely misrepresented. Listen, we
- 10:10make sure that every ship, every crew,
- 10:13every captain has everything we can
- 10:16provide them at every single moment.
- 10:18Some deployments are longer than others,
- 10:19and I have more uh respect and gratitude
- 10:23for those sailors
- 10:25than anybody.
- 10:26>> The Lincoln will now head home to San
- 10:28Diego and will be replaced in the Middle
- 10:30East by the USS George Washington, a
- 10:32process that typically takes several
- 10:34weeks, Tom.
- 10:36>> All right, Gabe, we thank you for that.
- 10:37Tonight, investigators describing a
- 10:39house of horrors discovering disturbing
- 10:41videos from inside a home of two missing
- 10:44women who are now believed to be dead.
- 10:46Valerie Castro has the latest
- 10:48>> tonight. Two missing women now believed
- 10:51to be dead after police uncovered what
- 10:53they say are graphic videos from this
- 10:55Philadelphia home.
- 10:56>> It's real dark, but what we saw is these
- 11:01two girls alive.
- 11:03There's a period of time and what
- 11:04appears to us that they're deceased.
- 11:06>> The women, Gabrielle Amirando, reported
- 11:08missing in 2012 and Marbel Fries, last
- 11:11seen in 2018. Their bodies have not been
- 11:14recovered, according to police. The
- 11:16videos, which have not been made public,
- 11:18part of a massive trove of digital
- 11:20evidence seized from the home in June.
- 11:22>> 600,000
- 11:24images,
- 11:2670,000 videos and over 10,000 pages of
- 11:31writings. Investigators zeroing in on
- 11:34the property following the arrest of
- 11:3644year-old Eugene Horsch after police
- 11:38say they found drugs and weapons in his
- 11:40car along with a fake DEA badge. Search
- 11:43warrants executed at the home also
- 11:45turning up five urns with cremated
- 11:47remains, drugs and a gun. According to
- 11:49police, Porsche remains in federal
- 11:51custody on a weapons charge and fake
- 11:53federal credentials. His attorney did
- 11:55not respond to an NBC News request for
- 11:57comment. He has not been charged in
- 11:59connection with a homicide. Usually when
- 12:01we have a homicide investigation, we
- 12:03have a body, we have body parts. This
- 12:05time we do not.
- 12:06>> Valerie Castro, NBC News.
- 12:09>> And in Texas, a story that is garnering
- 12:11a lot of headlines. A couple's surrogate
- 12:13is now fighting for custody of the baby
- 12:15boy she carried, arguing she should be
- 12:18given parental rights instead of the
- 12:20biological parents who are also fighting
- 12:22for him. Ryan Chandler explains what led
- 12:24to this legal battle.
- 12:26In Dallas, a boy's birth triggering a
- 12:29dramatic custody battle, pitting the
- 12:31baby's biological parents against the
- 12:33surrogate who carried him. The boy's
- 12:35California-based parents faced a
- 12:37devastating decision after a diagnosis
- 12:39at 20 weeks. They learned the baby, who
- 12:42was being carried by a surrogate from
- 12:43Alaska, had a serious heart condition
- 12:46called hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
- 12:48They chose to terminate the pregnancy,
- 12:51but gestational carrier McKenna West
- 12:53objected, fleeing to Texas for medical
- 12:56care and legal refuge.
- 12:57>> I didn't think that I could live with
- 12:59myself doing that.
- 13:01>> West sharing her story with the
- 13:02anti-abortion organization Live Action.
- 13:05She's fighting for legal parenthood over
- 13:07the baby she carried to term in Texas. I
- 13:10just know that he he's a fighter and he
- 13:14deserves to be surrounded by people who
- 13:18are 100% willing to fight alongside him.
- 13:22>> The boy was born Wednesday. West is
- 13:25calling him Gabriel, but he's roomy to
- 13:27his parents who want to take him back to
- 13:29California for medical care. Texas
- 13:32Attorney General Ken Paxton intervening
- 13:34to support the surrogate, urging a court
- 13:36to prohibit the child's removal from the
- 13:38state. The court sided with the state in
- 13:41part blocking any attempt to transfer
- 13:43the child while also prohibiting the
- 13:45gestational carrier from asserting any
- 13:47parental rights over him. Tonight, the
- 13:49biological parents attorneys telling NBC
- 13:52News, "As if the heartbreak of his
- 13:54condition were not enough, they are
- 13:55devastated to see their family tragedy
- 13:58transformed into political theater."
- 14:00adding, "Our client's only focus at this
- 14:03time is ensuring that their baby
- 14:04receives the medical care that he
- 14:06vitally needs and that they, as his
- 14:09parents, are able to spend every
- 14:11precious moment they can with their
- 14:13beautiful newborn son." Ryan Chandler,
- 14:16NBC News, Dallas. And we are back in 60
- 14:20seconds. Still to come tonight, the
- 14:21fiery explosion at an ammunition's
- 14:24factory near Rome. What set it off?
- 14:26Plus, our series, The Cost of Denial.
- 14:29With delivery units closing their doors
- 14:31across the country, this mother to be
- 14:34says it's making her think twice about
- 14:36having more kids. Stay with us.
- 14:40We're back now with our series, The Cost
- 14:42of Denial. And tonight, the troubling
- 14:44trend for expectant mothers with labor
- 14:47and delivery units increasingly closing
- 14:49down across America. Here's Annne
- 14:51Thompson.
- 14:52In the picture postcard twin villages of
- 14:55coastal Maine, Newcastle and Dam RCA,
- 14:58signs of trouble ahead. Maine Health
- 15:01announcing the closing of the only
- 15:04hospital labor and delivery unit in
- 15:06Lincoln County.
- 15:07>> I think it's going to have a deeply
- 15:11negative effect on our community.
- 15:13>> Pregnant with her first child, this area
- 15:16is where 33-year-old Leslie Wolf and her
- 15:18fianceé Ben chose to build their family.
- 15:22Their baby boy due in mid- November.
- 15:25>> I can see the little face.
- 15:26>> Yeah, we got a little side profile here.
- 15:29>> Could be one of the last deliveries at
- 15:31Main Health Lincoln Hospital that locals
- 15:34call Miles. Less than a 10-minute drive
- 15:36from Leslie's home.
- 15:38>> Living rurally comes with certain
- 15:40compromises. Businesses close earlier.
- 15:42You have to drive further to get to the
- 15:44grocery store. But this labor and
- 15:46delivery unit has existed for so long,
- 15:48for 84 years, and its closure did not
- 15:51need to happen.
- 15:52>> You're not willing to compromise on
- 15:54that?
- 15:54>> Completely not.
- 15:56>> Many must. A new report from the March
- 15:58of Dimes finds more than half of US
- 16:01counties lack a hospital with labor and
- 16:03delivery services affecting 370,000
- 16:07births a year.
- 16:08>> I don't know that we would have moved
- 16:10here knowing that we couldn't have given
- 16:13birth here necessarily. banding with
- 16:15other women.
- 16:16>> KEEP EARTH LOCAL.
- 16:17>> KEEP LOCAL.
- 16:19>> Leslie is trying to stop the closure
- 16:21scheduled for just a few weeks after her
- 16:23due date that would make the next
- 16:25nearest delivery unit about an hour
- 16:28away. If that is all goes well. Towns on
- 16:32the route like Wisconsin often packed
- 16:34with tourists in the summer, snow and
- 16:36ice in the winter. I just shudder to
- 16:39think about being the potential of being
- 16:41in labor and being stuck in traffic in
- 16:45Wisconsin on that single lane road. Um,
- 16:47it's terrifying.
- 16:49>> Miles will be the 10th labor and
- 16:51delivery unit to close in Maine since
- 16:532020. Maine Health declined an
- 16:56interview, but in a statement cited low
- 16:58birth volume at the hospital and an
- 17:00inability to hire enough doctors and
- 17:02nurses to safely support a reliable
- 17:0524-hour labor and delivery program. Its
- 17:09decision now weighing heavily on this
- 17:11mother to be.
- 17:13>> Is your concern so great that you would
- 17:15move out of Lincoln County?
- 17:17>> It's something that my partner and I
- 17:19have talked a little bit about. I think
- 17:21it's a concern so great that we might
- 17:23just consider not having a second child.
- 17:25>> The future of a hospital impacting the
- 17:28future of this family.
- 17:31>> And that March of Dimes report says it's
- 17:33not easy to find an OBGYn
- 17:36in this country, especially in rural
- 17:39America. The report says in more than a
- 17:42third of the counties, there's not a
- 17:45OBGYn or a midwife. Tom.
- 17:48>> All right. And we thank you for that
- 17:49report. When we come back tonight, the
- 17:51fugitive known for her mastery of
- 17:53disguises finally caught after a manhunt
- 17:56across three states. And I'll have what
- 17:58he's having. The bear who broke into one
- 18:00of the hottest restaurants in Aspen.
- 18:02That's next.
- 18:05We're back now with the search for a
- 18:06Florida murder suspect that police
- 18:08describe as a master of disguise.
- 18:11Officials say that this woman, Isabelle
- 18:13Johnson, has been captured after a
- 18:15monthsl long search. Johnson had been
- 18:17described by authorities as a master
- 18:19manipulator. She is wanted in the
- 18:21connection of the death of a young
- 18:22father whose remains were found in a
- 18:24shallow grave. Also tonight, the boom
- 18:27near Rome. Watch this again. You see
- 18:29that fireball blasting into the sky. The
- 18:32explosion happened at an ammo plant for
- 18:34a major Italian defense manufacturer. It
- 18:37was caused by a fire and appears to have
- 18:39started in the powder department. Local
- 18:41officials say nobody was hurt. Back here
- 18:43at home, look who got the best table in
- 18:45the house. A black bear in Aspen,
- 18:48Colorado, sitting down at a fancy
- 18:50restaurant after it got through a side
- 18:52door. No time to even hear about the
- 18:55specials. The restaurant told our
- 18:56newsroom one of the employees got it out
- 18:58by guiding it back out the door. The
- 19:01bear said he's been kicked out of better
- 19:02places. And the next time you have a bad
- 19:05day at work, think about this guy. Just
- 19:07look at this. A wild moment for this
- 19:09fisherman in the Philippines. On his
- 19:10face, yes, that is an octopus. The man
- 19:13said the octopus was hard to handle,
- 19:15clearly, and that it almost ripped his
- 19:17face. All right, when we come back
- 19:18tonight, don't worry, there is good
- 19:20news, and it's next.
- 19:23Finally, there's good news tonight. A
- 19:26grandmother's last day of chemo made
- 19:28unforgettable by the one person she
- 19:30never expected to see. Here's Jesse
- 19:32Kersh.

- 20:07And for Barb's big day, Faith, an airman
- 20:09at Joint Base Andrews, drove seven hours
- 20:12overnight from Maryland to Ohio.
- 20:14>> I just could not wait to see her. I was
- 20:16proud of her.
- 20:18>> And she was there to see Barb declare
- 20:21victory.
- 20:22>> It was just utter shock. I just I
- 20:24couldn't believe it.
- 20:25>> The moment taking off on TikTok, one
- 20:28user commenting, "Two warriors in one
- 20:30room." that really struck me and touched
- 20:34me.
- 20:35>> After a long cancer battle, this hug
- 20:39might have been the best medicine of
- 20:40all.
- 20:41>> I felt very loved and very special that
- 20:44day.
- 20:46>> Jesse Kersh, NBC News.
