- 1:58News starts right now.
- 2:01This is NBC Nightly News with Tom Yamz.
- 2:08>> And good evening. It's great to be with
- 2:09you on this Monday night. We want to
- 2:12begin tonight with the shocking and
- 2:13sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham.
- 2:16There is new reporting, Justin, and we
- 2:18want to get to about what could have
- 2:19been his last phone call. But we start
- 2:21right here with the scene on Capitol
- 2:23Hill today. White roses on his chamber
- 2:26seat, handwritten notes, and a
- 2:28condolence book outside of his office.
- 2:30Just blocks away, though, this
- 2:32surprising scene. Look closely. Multiple
- 2:35FBI agents at Graham's DC residence
- 2:38taking photos and searching through the
- 2:40home. Their presence raising questions
- 2:42about what they're investigating after a
- 2:45preliminary examination blamed a heart
- 2:47condition for Graham's death. Late
- 2:49today, South Carolina's governor
- 2:51appointing Graham's sister to
- 2:53temporarily fill the seat. And now
- 2:55there's a scramble among Republicans in
- 2:57that state to fill a seat permanently.
- 2:59Ryan Nobles is on Capitol Hill. He
- 3:01starts us off tonight.
- 3:04Tonight, new video showing more than a
- 3:06dozen FBI agents fanning out across the
- 3:08Washington home of the late Senator
- 3:10Lindsey Graham. The FBI shutting down
- 3:13the street as investigators spent
- 3:14several hours on scene taking photos and
- 3:17searching the property. Two law
- 3:19enforcement sources familiar with the
- 3:21scene tell NBC News their work is out of
- 3:24an abundance of caution. So far, no
- 3:26evidence has emerged to suggest foul
- 3:28play. A preliminary medical examiner's
- 3:31report revealed Graham suffered from a
- 3:33tear in the main artery of his heart.
- 3:35But they are still waiting on a
- 3:36toxicology test before declaring a cause
- 3:39of death. On Capitol Hill, Graham's seat
- 3:42in the Senate chamber adorned in white
- 3:44roses. His colleagues struggling with
- 3:47his shocking loss.
- 3:48>> Senator Graham always brought a smile to
- 3:51your face and levity to the halls of
- 3:54Congress.
- 3:56>> We will laugh together again. Mr.
- 4:00President, he yield the floor.
- 4:03>> In his home state of South Carolina, the
- 4:05governor appointing Graham's sister,
- 4:07Darlene Graham Nordone, to fill his term
- 4:10until the end of the year.
- 4:11>> I think this is what Lindsay would have
- 4:13wanted, and I plan to honor him in this
- 4:16way.
- 4:17>> Nardone is not expected to run for the
- 4:19seat this fall, leaving a wideopen
- 4:21primary field for a special election in
- 4:24August. She will be sworn in Tuesday,
- 4:27filling the vacancy quickly. What is
- 4:29less certain is if or when Senator Mitch
- 4:32McConnell will be back. Absent for more
- 4:34than a month, his office released this
- 4:36picture over the weekend, revealing that
- 4:39the 84year-old is recovering from
- 4:40pneumonia after a fall at his home sent
- 4:43him to the hospital.
- 4:45Ryan Nobles joins us now live. And Ryan,
- 4:47I know you have some new reporting for
- 4:48our viewers about what was potentially
- 4:51Senator Graham's final phone call. Yeah,
- 4:53that's right, Tom. Senator Tommy
- 4:55Tubberville telling us tonight that his
- 4:57former schedule scheduler was working
- 4:59for Senator Graham and took a call from
- 5:01the senator on Saturday night saying
- 5:03that he had chest pains and to call 911.
- 5:06The staffer called 911 and then rushed
- 5:08to his house. They found the paramedics
- 5:10there treating Senator Graham, but
- 5:12unfortunately it was too late. Tom, Ryan
- 5:15Nobles from Capitol Hill tonight on
- 5:17those developments. Ryan, thank you. We
- 5:19want to get to some news now on Iran.
- 5:21The US military is attacking for the
- 5:23third night in a row. Those new strikes
- 5:26as President Trump reinstates that naval
- 5:28blockade of Iranian ports. All of it as
- 5:31oil prices spike once again, meaning gas
- 5:34prices are going back up. Here's Garrett
- 5:36Hake.
- 5:38President Trump tonight escalating the
- 5:40latest battle with Iran over control of
- 5:42the Straight of Hormuz, ordering a naval
- 5:45blockade of Iranian ports back into
- 5:47effect and a third consecutive night of
- 5:49air strikes. According to Sentcom,
- 5:51>> we're attacking them tonight and we're
- 5:54taking out all of their capability for
- 5:56uh anything having to do with the
- 5:58straight with the Harmon Strait and I
- 6:00think in the end we will end up just
- 6:03controlling the whole thing. The
- 6:05president today insisting the vital
- 6:07waterway is open and that the US would
- 6:10begin demanding reimbursement at a rate
- 6:12of 20% of the value of any ship's cargo
- 6:15to pass through it. Marine traffic data
- 6:18shows shipping through the straight
- 6:19falling by half last week after Iran
- 6:22struck two commercial vessels,
- 6:23triggering US retaliation.
- 6:26>> Will become the guardian of the
- 6:27straight. Maybe we'll call it the
- 6:28guardian angel of the strait
- 6:30>> and we should be reimbursed for that.
- 6:32The UN agency which oversees
- 6:34international shipping saying there is
- 6:36quote no legal basis for applying such
- 6:38tolls. Tolls which when imposed by Iran
- 6:41earlier this year, Secretary of State
- 6:43Marco Rubio called quote completely
- 6:46illegal.
- 6:46>> No country is allowed to charge tolls or
- 6:48fees on an international waterway.
- 6:51That's existing international law.
- 6:52That's the way it is. It all comes after
- 6:55a weekend in which the US and Iran
- 6:57traded missile and drone strikes across
- 6:59the region, including the US deploying
- 7:02sea-based one-way attack drones in
- 7:04combat for the first time, destroying a
- 7:06ship and submarine maintenance facility.
- 7:09The tensions sending oil prices surging
- 7:11nearly 10% as Democrats warned the
- 7:14president has no real plan to end the
- 7:17war.
- 7:18>> It's very difficult to see the way out
- 7:19of what has become a kind of a quagmire.
- 7:23Okay, we're going to switch gears, Gary.
- 7:25I know you're also following some news
- 7:26of a scathing takedown of the president
- 7:29today with a judge throwing out his
- 7:31lawsuit against the IRS. Walk us through
- 7:33what happened.
- 7:34>> Yeah, Tom, this was a federal judge in
- 7:36Florida who ruled that the president's
- 7:37lawsuits against the IRS, which he
- 7:40controls, was brought to quote,
- 7:41"manipulate the judicial process." The
- 7:43judge even suggested sanctioning some of
- 7:45the president's attorneys for bringing
- 7:47this lawsuit at all. This appears to be
- 7:50the final word in the so-called
- 7:52anti-weaponization fund that came out of
- 7:54that initial settlement. Tom Garrett
- 7:57Hake at the White House. Garrett, thank
- 7:58you. We are following a new ICE involved
- 8:01fatal shooting. Parts of that incident
- 8:03caught on video and we have new
- 8:05reporting tonight. The man killed may
- 8:07not have been IC's original target.
- 8:09Aaron McLaclin has the latest.
- 8:11>> Tonight, new videos out revealing key
- 8:14moments connected to a deadly ICE
- 8:16involved shooting in Maine. In one
- 8:18video, you see a white vehicle driving
- 8:20in a circle as an agent attempts to grab
- 8:22the door. It's unclear if this was
- 8:24before or after shots were fired.
- 8:28In another video, you can hear that
- 8:30fire. And in this video, you see what
- 8:32appears to be federal agents pulling out
- 8:34the limp body of a man, his hands then
- 8:37placed behind his back. And tonight, in
- 8:39a stunning development, independent
- 8:41Senator Angus King issued a statement,
- 8:43saying the victim of today's federal law
- 8:45enforcement shooting was not the target
- 8:47of the warrant. King spokesperson
- 8:50telling NBC News the Secretary of
- 8:51Homeland Security called King to tell
- 8:53him the news. Minutes later, DHS
- 8:56released this statement, saying in part,
- 8:57"ICE was conducting targeted
- 8:59surveillance on the last known address
- 9:01of an individual, the final order of
- 9:03removal. An individual who was not here
- 9:05legally departed the resident's
- 9:07vehicle." quote, "The vehicle attempted
- 9:09to flee the scene and fearing for public
- 9:11safety, an officer discharged his
- 9:14weapon," adding, "The driver of the
- 9:15vehicle was struck and passed away from
- 9:18his injuries." Earlier today, an
- 9:19immigrant rights organization told NBC
- 9:21News it identified the man killed as a
- 9:2426-year-old from Colombia, adding he was
- 9:26authorized to work in the United States,
- 9:28having been issued a social security
- 9:30number. Today, news of the fatal
- 9:32shooting sent scores of protesters
- 9:34marching through the streets of Maine.
- 9:36NBC News reached out to Maine's attorney
- 9:38general for comment on Senator King's
- 9:40latest statement. They previously said a
- 9:42deportation officer would be placed on
- 9:45leave per standard protocol.
- 9:48Aaron joins us now live in studio.
- 9:50Aaron, there's a lot of questions about
- 9:51this shooting. Now, DHS is taking over
- 9:53the investigation.
- 9:54>> Yeah, that's right, Tom. Moments ago,
- 9:56Senator Susan Collins tweeted that she
- 9:58has been informed that the DHS Inspector
- 10:01General will take over the investigation
- 10:03in cooperation with the FBI.
- 10:05>> Okay. Aaron McGlaughlin. Aaron, thank
- 10:06you for that. We're also tracking
- 10:08flooding threats for millions tonight.
- 10:10Heavy rains have already washed out
- 10:12parts of Tennessee. The scene was even
- 10:14worse in hard hit, Missouri where rising
- 10:17waters flipped a state trooper boat and
- 10:20hundreds of campers and staffers had to
- 10:21be airlifted to safety. We are tracking
- 10:24the brutal heat. Bill Karens is here and
- 10:26Bill. Almost a third of the country will
- 10:28be hit with these high temps.
- 10:29>> Yeah, and it's moving to the east coast
- 10:30for the next few days and eventually
- 10:32it'll actually last in the mid-Atlantic
- 10:34longer than that. So, let's start with
- 10:35the numbers. One-third of all Americans
- 10:37are under some sort of heat advisories,
- 10:39warnings. And as we go throughout the
- 10:41next 24 to 48 hours, the hottest air
- 10:43that has been in the northern plains is
- 10:45going to push through the Great Lakes
- 10:46and into the Northeast. Washington DC on
- 10:48Wednesday, 100°. New York City 98. Even
- 10:51Syracuse 96. It won't be as humid as hot
- 10:54as the last heat wave, but still
- 10:55dangerous. Now, let's talk about the
- 10:57life-threatening flash flooding that
- 10:58we're expecting tonight into tomorrow,
- 11:01maybe even lasting into by the time we
- 11:03get to Wednesday. We're going to watch
- 11:04heavy rainfall in what we call Texas
- 11:06Hill Country. This is areas that are
- 11:08very floodprone. We could see some
- 11:10locations getting up to 10 inches of
- 11:12rain. This includes the areas around
- 11:13Kurville and Camp Mystic that had the
- 11:15horrific flooding a year ago. Could be
- 11:17an incredibly dangerous week for Texas.
- 11:19We'll be watching. Okay, Bill, we thank
- 11:20you. We're going to head overseas now to
- 11:22Thailand and new images of a massive
- 11:24fire at a pub in Bangkok, killing
- 11:27dozens. Janice Mackie Freyer has the
- 11:29latest.
- 11:31A column of flames bursting out from a
- 11:33pub in a busy area of Thailand's
- 11:35capital, Bangkok. People seen fleeing,
- 11:38helping the wounded, and attempting to
- 11:41put out flames on an injured man. The
- 11:43blaze started on Sunday night. This
- 11:46video filmed shortly before shows a band
- 11:48performing in the crowded venue. The
- 11:50country's prime minister visiting the
- 11:52site said musicians say the fire started
- 11:55at a circuit breaker on the stage
- 11:57followed by a blackout and an explosion.
- 12:00Thai authorities have opened an
- 12:02investigation looking at possible
- 12:03negligence, including emergency exits
- 12:06that witnesses say were blocked.
- 12:09>> It was so rapid there was no way to get
- 12:11out at all. This survivor says we didn't
- 12:14know where the fire exit was. Body cam
- 12:17footage from first responders shows a
- 12:19venue filled with smoke. Authorities say
- 12:22most casualties were found in the
- 12:24bathrooms as people tried to escape
- 12:26>> and it spread quickly uh through the
- 12:28primise and the people cannot escape uh
- 12:30quickly. So many of them suffocate and
- 12:33>> at least 28 people are confirmed dead
- 12:35with 71 injured. Relatives still
- 12:38struggling to find news of their loved
- 12:40ones like this woman looking for her
- 12:42son, a singer at the pub.
- 12:45I have only one son, she says. I have no
- 12:48other kids. Now, one of the worst
- 12:51incidents in the country's recent
- 12:52history, a fire with so many victims and
- 12:56so few answers. Janice Mackey Freyer,
- 12:58NBC News.
- 13:00>> And back here at home, we have some
- 13:02stunning video out of Yellowstone
- 13:03National Park. The moment a massive
- 13:05bison tossed a grandfather into the air.
- 13:08And we have an update tonight on that
- 13:10man's condition as we hear from a new
- 13:12witness to the attack. Camila Bernal
- 13:14with that video and the story.
- 13:15>> LOOK OUT.
- 13:17>> TONIGHT, an eyewitness sharing new
- 13:19details about the leadup to this
- 13:20terrifying moment. A Yellowstone bison
- 13:23charging a 65-year-old man and his
- 13:25grandson flipping the man into the air.
- 13:28>> I was scared to be watching something
- 13:30like that happen firsthand.
- 13:32>> Emmy Lou Abrahamson says moments before
- 13:35the agitated animal had settled onto the
- 13:37ground near their campsite.
- 13:39>> This bison is pissed off.
- 13:41>> The two take pictures. Then the bison
- 13:43begins rolling in the dust before
- 13:44getting up and seeming to target this
- 13:46truck. A rapid charge. Both tried to run
- 13:50and hide with the bison chasing the man
- 13:52around a group of trees, stopping to
- 13:54trash one around before it catches up.
- 13:57The massive animal tossing the man
- 13:59several feet.
- 14:01>> It was terrifying. When the bison jumped
- 14:03up, it looked like it ran after the man
- 14:05and the kid, and we could see the bushes
- 14:08shaking. The man's family says he
- 14:10underwent surgery and is on the mend,
- 14:13telling us the grandson is also okay.
- 14:16>> Photographer Mike Mloud captured the
- 14:19animals powerful charge.
- 14:20>> It was like watching uh a bulldozer move
- 14:24out at 45 mph. It was It was
- 14:27breathtaking.
- 14:28>> And while there's no indication anyone
- 14:30did anything wrong, a reminder to use
- 14:32caution as you enjoy the beauty of our
- 14:35parks. It doesn't doesn't take but a
- 14:38second for a wild animal to change their
- 14:40mind.
- 14:41>> Camila Bernell, NBC News.
- 14:44>> All right, when we return in 60 seconds,
- 14:45friends of Nolan Wells speaking out.
- 14:48They were with him in his final hours on
- 14:50that island before the teen's death.
- 14:52What they reveal. Plus, the cadets
- 14:54jumping into action to save a driver
- 14:57from a sinking car. That's coming up.
- 15:01We're back now with the investigation to
- 15:03the death of a Mississippi college
- 15:05football player. His friends who were
- 15:07with him before he went missing now
- 15:09speaking out. Our Kate Snow has a story.
- 15:12>> News reporter 8-year-old son Wells
- 15:15missing passing at three on Horn Island.
- 15:19>> New audio from a dispatcher after Nolan
- 15:21Wells's mother contacted authorities
- 15:23when she learned her son was missing.
- 15:2518-year-old Nolan went to Horn Island in
- 15:28a boat with friends on July 4th. His
- 15:30body was found two days later. It's
- 15:32unclear who Nolan was with when he
- 15:34disappeared. And now, new details from
- 15:37two people who were on the island.
- 15:39Tristan Shepard was not on the same boat
- 15:41with Nolan, but tells Rolling Stone he
- 15:44was with Nolan and a large group around
- 15:463:30 p.m. Many have speculated this
- 15:49video widely circulated on social media
- 15:52showed Nolan in an altercation, but
- 15:55Shepard says he's the man in that video
- 15:57having a disagreement. In that video,
- 16:00you hear somebody yelling, "That is me,"
- 16:02Shepard told Rolling Stone. Rolling
- 16:04Stone reports Shepard's girlfriend,
- 16:06uncle, and a family friend corroborated
- 16:08his story.
- 16:09>> So, like, it's really hard. Like,
- 16:11>> a close friend of Nolan's, Jayvon
- 16:12Williams, telling TMZ he saw Nolan on
- 16:15the fourth and would have done anything
- 16:17to help his friend.
- 16:18>> That's my boy and I want him to find
- 16:20justice. Like that like this whole case
- 16:22thing, like whatever, like this whole
- 16:24situation, none of this adds up to me.
- 16:26>> Nolan's parents told us they need more
- 16:29information. We're having to pull straws
- 16:32because just everything's so
- 16:35inconsistent. And again, you know, we're
- 16:38doing this because we want answers.
- 16:40>> Do you think someone might have harmed
- 16:43your son?
- 16:45>> I don't I don't I don't know. I I don't
- 16:48I don't I can't I don't know how to
- 16:50answer that.
- 16:52>> Kate Snow joins us now in studio. Kate,
- 16:54it's been nine days since he went
- 16:55missing. It's been a week since his body
- 16:57was recovered and we still know so
- 16:59little from authorities.
- 17:00>> Yeah, that is puzzling, Tom. We don't
- 17:02have results yet from the official
- 17:03autopsy or from the autopsy the family
- 17:05commissioned. NBC News has been reaching
- 17:08out multiple times to the coroner, to
- 17:10the sheriff. We're told the
- 17:12investigation is ongoing. Social media
- 17:14sleuths are trying to fill the gaps,
- 17:16Tom, but unfortunately that means
- 17:18there's a lot of misinformation out
- 17:20there.
- 17:20>> Hopefully, the family will get some
- 17:21answers this week. All right, Kate, we
- 17:23thank you for that. We're back now with
- 17:25a massive wildfire raging near Paris.
- 17:27Video showing huge plumes of smoke over
- 17:30one of the most prominent palaces
- 17:32outside of Paris. The blaze tearing
- 17:34through a massive forest within 40 mi of
- 17:37the city. Two people have already been
- 17:39arrested in connection with that fire.
- 17:41And in Italy, Army cadets to the rescue.
- 17:43Look at this. The Ministry of Defense
- 17:44says they dove into action when a car
- 17:47plunged off the Italian coast with the
- 17:49driver stuck inside. There they are in
- 17:51the water working together to pull the
- 17:53driver out just in time before that car
- 17:56sinks. When we come back tonight,
- 17:58there's nothing scarier than going to
- 17:59the hospital, right? Why the staff at
- 18:01this one made sure there was nothing
- 18:03more joyful than when this little girl
- 18:05was finally ready to leave. That's next.
- 18:13Finally, there's good news tonight. A
- 18:15little girl getting a life-saving gift
- 18:17for her birthday. celebrating with the
- 18:19hospital caregivers that were by her
- 18:21side for so many treatments.
