- 0:11a prosperous suburb of vienna
- 0:14natasha campus was imprisoned here for
- 0:16eight and a half years
- 0:18this is her story what i've learned
- 0:22about
- 0:22people is this no one is unfailable
- 0:27and anyone can find themselves in a
- 0:29position
- 0:30where they lose control of their lives
- 0:36that's true for the kidnapper and it's
- 0:38true for me
- 0:42from the moment i was kidnapped i still
- 0:44had control of my thoughts
- 0:47but i couldn't do anything about the
- 0:49world outside
- 0:54and the perpetrator had blown a couple
- 0:57of fuses in his head
- 1:00and he couldn't control his life either
- 1:04or he wouldn't have done what he did
- 1:19i have a sign on my forehead that says
- 1:22crime
- 1:24victims
- 1:28i think everyone has preconceptions
- 1:30about me
- 1:32maybe when i'm older people will forget
- 1:34what happened to me
- 1:43since yesterday evening a 10 year old
- 1:46girl has been missing in vienna's
- 1:47donostad district
- 1:49natasha wears glasses she's 1 meter 45
- 1:52tall
- 1:52has light brown hair with a fringe and
- 1:54blue eyes
- 1:56she's been missing for more than 34
- 1:57hours all efforts to locator have been
- 2:00unsuccessful
- 2:01and the police are widening their search
- 2:06my mother always said never part after
- 2:09an
- 2:09argument because something could happen
- 2:12to one of us
- 2:13and we'd never see each other again
- 2:17and then it happened
- 2:20initially she rarely went to school
- 2:25alone
- 2:26but on that particular day she did i
- 2:29watched her from the window as she left
- 2:31and walked towards the shopping center
- 2:34then she disappeared and that was it
- 2:42i was almost halfway to school
- 2:45when i saw a man in the distance
- 2:48standing in front of a white van
- 2:51as though he were waiting for someone
- 2:56i wanted to cross the street
- 3:00but then i decided to keep going
- 3:03straight
- 3:08when i came nearer he came towards me
- 3:16grabbed me and
- 3:19yeah dragged me into his truck
- 3:22[Laughter]
- 3:26[Music]
- 3:28i tried to scream but no sound came out
- 3:33my voice box froze no sound
- 3:37the kidnapper said if i didn't scream
- 3:40and didn't stand up
- 3:41and did what he said he wouldn't hurt me
- 3:51i didn't know what was going to happen
- 3:54in that moment
- 3:55i thought it was the end
- 4:07i kind of knew the neighborhood from
- 4:08that angle because when i used to drive
- 4:11home with my mother
- 4:12i'd see the treetops and telephone poles
- 4:15so i knew roughly where we were headed
- 4:26fan
- 4:33then he drove the white truck up to his
- 4:35garage
- 4:37wrapped me in a blue blanket and carried
- 4:39me into the house
- 4:50[Music]
- 4:59he carried me downstairs and
- 5:02put me down for a moment
- 5:06i didn't know it then but he'd opened
- 5:10everything up
- 5:12then he dragged me and carried me in
- 5:26then he left me in the cell on the floor
- 5:30in the dark vincent
- 5:40natasha was always on time so when she
- 5:42was 10 minutes late
- 5:44i thought to myself where is she i'm
- 5:47going to call the child
- 5:48minder but no one answered i called half
- 5:52an hour later
- 5:53and they told me she'd never arrived at
- 5:56that moment i nearly fainted
- 5:58i knew something had happened so easy
- 6:12it was as if the earth had just opened
- 6:15up
- 6:16and swallowed her
- 6:30i just sat there and counted to myself
- 6:33up to
- 6:3321. 21 seconds
- 6:37and then to 60 and on and on
- 6:41so i knew roughly how long i had been
- 6:44there
- 6:46but at some point i lost track
- 6:51[Applause]
- 6:55that first day he brought me a mattress
- 6:59it was just five centimeters thick
- 7:02and made of foam rubber i only had the
- 7:05same blue blanket to cover me
- 7:07and i had to use my jacket as a pillow
- 7:11i wanted to keep my dress on day and
- 7:14night
- 7:16i didn't want to give up anything or
- 7:19reveal
- 7:20anything about myself
- 7:23he'd taken away my school back
- 7:26and he burned my shoes in the first few
- 7:29days
- 7:31he said i wouldn't need them
- 7:37a massive search is launched by police
- 7:40starting at the housing estate where
- 7:42natasha lives
- 7:46concerned citizens are calling in with
- 7:48information
- 7:53soon the police have evidence of an
- 7:56abduction
- 7:59austrian police are investigating the
- 8:01disappearance of ten-year-old natasha
- 8:03campus
- 8:03who was last seen walking to school on
- 8:05march the second
- 8:07one she had about a two kilometer walk
- 8:11to school
- 8:12starting from her home on the renban
- 8:14estate
- 8:17halfway along there's a roundabout on
- 8:19the mainland
- 8:22at approximately 7 20 a.m that monday
- 8:24morning
- 8:25a girl standing at the roundabout says
- 8:27she saw another girl in a red anorak
- 8:30being forced into a white truck parked
- 8:32on the right side of the road
- 8:42to begin at first i had no way to
- 8:45contact my kidnapper
- 8:47if i needed something
- 8:52he just came every day
- 8:56i letting sometimes when he didn't close
- 8:59all the doors behind him
- 9:02he could hear me knocking and can't
- 9:04there might
- 9:06be
- 9:09and then he installed an intercom system
- 9:12so i could communicate with him
- 9:20i couldn't tell if it was day or night
- 9:23because my inner clock had gone
- 9:25haywire
- 9:32years later the entrance to natasha's
- 9:35cell is discovered in the garage beneath
- 9:37a disguised trapdoor
- 9:39[Music]
- 9:42down below a heavy cupboard and tires
- 9:44must be shoved aside
- 9:51they reveal a safe 70 centimeters high
- 9:53screwed flush with the wall
- 9:57[Music]
- 10:00behind that the half meter thick wall
- 10:02has been hollowed out
- 10:05[Applause]
- 10:06to get in you had to crawl backwards
- 10:08through the hole
- 10:11and then close 150 kilo steel and
- 10:14concrete door behind you
- 10:22finally you turned left to open the
- 10:24double wooden doors
- 10:25and step down into a five square meter
- 10:28cell
- 10:32it probably took him an hour or so to
- 10:34open the cell
- 10:36if he was working fast or he hadn't
- 10:38locked everything
- 10:40it was a bit less
- 10:46the effort was enormous pushing
- 10:49everything aside and
- 10:50opening everything up if anything had
- 10:53happened
- 10:54to him or he had been taken ill
- 10:57he'd never have got it open
- 11:03i would have been sealed up like an
- 11:05egyptian pharaoh
- 11:06buried alive dead and mummified
- 11:12the statement by the young witness
- 11:14triggers an enormous investigation
- 11:17police questioned 1520 owners of white
- 11:21trucks and 650 other people
- 11:25including a man from strashoff half an
- 11:27hour from the centre of vienna
- 11:30a township with one main street
- 11:33no real center and eight thousand
- 11:40inhabitants
- 11:44the man's name is wolfgang pricklope an
- 11:46unmarried 35 year old communications
- 11:49technician
- 11:50with no criminal record
- 11:54pricklopeel lives in his mother's house
- 11:56where two investigators question him
- 11:59his truck is full of rubble from a
- 12:01building site
- 12:02he claims to have been at home on the
- 12:04day of the crime but has no one to
- 12:06confirm his story
- 12:08police have no probable cause to search
- 12:10his house
- 12:11they take polaroids of his truck write a
- 12:14report
- 12:15and file it you have the han
- 12:18siemens i met her at siemens
- 12:23we did our vocational training there in
- 12:25the early 1980s
- 12:28and we both worked there
- 12:31later i set up a company renovating
- 12:34apartments
- 12:35and i hired her prickly pear because
- 12:38i knew he was a reliable person
- 12:42mentioned in gilead
- 12:58later on he installed a timer
- 13:01the lights went on at a particular time
- 13:04and then it went dark like in a prison
- 13:08where the lights go off at 8pm
- 13:24every drop of water meant more moles
- 13:28it was humid and wet in the little room
- 13:31and there were all kinds of insects
- 13:33there
- 13:34it smelled musty
- 13:39it was very cold and damp
- 13:43really disgusting it's a cold voice
- 13:52and the ventilator was a kind of torture
- 13:55folktale it was very loud
- 14:05and when it rotated for a long time and
- 14:08became hot
- 14:09the blades began to melt and then it
- 14:12didn't just make that droning noise
- 14:26that went on until the fan was broken
- 14:44i began to get a sense for when he was
- 14:47coming
- 14:48i would become very nervous
- 14:53and then i'd hear the sounds of him
- 14:56unscrewing the safe
- 14:59and opening the concrete door
- 15:04and so on lots of pounding noises
- 15:09i'd sense it in advance
- 15:18my whole body would go into nuts my
- 15:21stomach
- 15:22would twist into nuts i'd break out
- 15:26in a cold sweat and i'd feel really
- 15:38queasy
- 15:46once before the kidnapping when we
- 15:50were renovating a flat how one could
- 15:54effectively install sound insulation to
- 15:58reduce the noise
- 15:59of a hammer drill
- 16:03i told him that cement is a good
- 16:06insulation against
- 16:08voices but rock wool would be the best
- 16:12thing to suppress
- 16:13the sound of a hammer this is
- 16:25horrified to discover from the police
- 16:28investigations
- 16:30that he used exactly this information
- 16:33to build the cell this releases
- 16:40[Music]
- 16:42special investigators in vienna receive
- 16:44a second tip-off about wolfgang prickle
- 16:46appeal
- 16:47eight days after his initial questioning
- 16:50the informant is a police dog handler
- 16:52who lives in strassoff
- 16:54he reports on a neighbor a reclusive man
- 16:57who owns a white truck
- 16:59he's a shy loner and protects his house
- 17:01with electronic surveillance systems
- 17:04he may store weapons there and he's
- 17:06thought to have a sexual interest in
- 17:08children
- 17:10the officer has never learned his name
- 17:11but provides a description
- 17:14the special task force immediately
- 17:16orders local police in strassoff
- 17:18to check the man's address
- 17:24then a fax arrives wolfgang prickler
- 17:26peel isn't registered as living at the
- 17:28house
- 17:29his mother is prickly peal is only
- 17:31staying there
- 17:33his truck was checked on the 6th of
- 17:35april
- 17:37the tip-off is filed and forgotten
- 17:44natasha campus has disappeared into thin
- 17:49[Music]
- 17:58air
- 18:00[Music]
- 18:09sometimes when i was giving her pictures
- 18:11of dust in the living room
- 18:14i would hold them to my chest or kiss
- 18:16them and i said
- 18:19don't give up you're a strong strong
- 18:26child
- 18:31at first i didn't have to help him with
- 18:33his work
- 18:35because he was afraid that if i came
- 18:37upstairs
- 18:38i might attack him with the tools
- 18:43but when he was sure i was too scared of
- 18:46him to run away
- 18:48[Music]
- 18:50he let me up but he made sure
- 18:53everything was locked so i couldn't get
- 19:08out
- 19:10[Laughter]
- 19:20i didn't see any daylight for a long
- 19:22long time
- 19:25then when i finally came upstairs i
- 19:28still didn't see any
- 19:30even though it was daytime because he
- 19:33closed the blinds
- 19:41he began integrating me more and more
- 19:43into his household
- 19:45until i became a kind of slave
- 19:49he always made sure i couldn't run away
- 19:51he threatened me
- 19:53and kept everything locked
- 19:57it must have been incredibly gratifying
- 20:00for him
- 20:01to keep someone captive someone who was
- 20:04there for him alone
- 20:06someone not even his mother or
- 20:07grandmother knew about
- 20:13satan from the time that natasha campus
- 20:18was kidnapped
- 20:19i visited his house about twice a year
- 20:22but never noticed anything unusual
- 20:29was very concerned with hygiene and
- 20:32cleanliness
- 20:33and he was extremely frugal
- 20:41on the one hand he could afford a bmw
- 20:46and lasted
- 21:01for the money he spent on a tank full of
- 21:05petrol
- 21:07i could have survived for one or two
- 21:09weeks
- 21:10or even longer depending on how much he
- 21:14gave me to eat
- 21:15isn't that macabre
- 21:32sometimes when i went with the police to
- 21:34identify things
- 21:36i felt i was going to my own execution
- 21:39i'd have to go
- 21:40somewhere near the school or near my
- 21:42flat because they
- 21:43found a bag and wanted to know if it
- 21:46belonged to natasha
- 21:48sometimes it was a shoe in a bush or a
- 21:51pair of panties in a car
- 21:52or a red jacket in a garage
- 21:58i was always so relieved when i saw that
- 22:01none of these things were natashas
- 22:11if i had some skin cream i wrapped some
- 22:15into the wooden boards of my bed because
- 22:18it was a bit like furniture polish
- 22:25i did a lot of dusting and at the
- 22:27weekends
- 22:29because i'd got used to doing it with my
- 22:32mother
- 22:34when i had time
- 22:38when i was locked up i sorted things out
- 22:42tied it everything up and i dusted
- 22:56he was obsessed with cleaning and of
- 22:58course he was constantly wiping off
- 23:00things that i might have touched
- 23:02i wasn't really supposed to touch
- 23:04anything because of course fingerprints
- 23:07leave ugly
- 23:08greasy marks he would punish me if he
- 23:12found a fingerprint anywhere
- 23:15not only because it was potentially
- 23:17dangerous to find my fingerprints in his
- 23:19house
- 23:20but because he hated the look of
- 23:22fingerprints on his household surfaces
- 23:26he would grab me by the wrist and use
- 23:28the back of my hand
- 23:30to wipe the prints of the refrigerator
- 23:32or the door frame
- 23:34two ramen
- 23:36[Laughter]
- 23:42guns to begin right at the beginning he
- 23:44made me wear plastic bags
- 23:46on my head i stitched them together
- 23:51and attached them with a rubber band
- 23:56it was horrible because the color came
- 23:58off onto my skin
- 24:00and it hurt because i had to fix it with
- 24:02clips and rubber bands
- 24:08it would have been easier just to tuck
- 24:12the hair
- 24:13under the plastic
- 24:16but he insisted on the clips and grips
- 24:19and they dug into my scalp and hurt
- 24:21it was tight really unpleasant
- 24:29it made me frown all the time it was
- 24:32horrible
- 24:34then he said if i shaved my head it
- 24:37wouldn't be so bad
- 24:39and it was torture so when he trusted me
- 24:43enough i got a pair of scissors
- 24:45blunt of course so i couldn't harm
- 24:47myself
- 24:48and i used them to cut my hair
- 24:53and then he saw that he said
- 24:57he might as well cut it all off and he
- 25:00did
- 25:01[Music]
- 25:12schneider
- 25:16there were times when the torture and
- 25:18the humiliation were so bad
- 25:21that i ran to the window and shouted for
- 25:24the police
- 25:25then he grabbed me really roughly and
- 25:28choked me
- 25:29and hit me
- 25:37so of course sometimes i would rather be
- 25:41in my cell
- 25:43than have to leave it
- 25:47to do something i didn't want to
- 25:51like help him work myself
- 25:54something he did when he was sick
- 25:57not at first but later
- 26:04i had to come up and i'd have to make
- 26:06him soup or tea
- 26:08and then he'd take me down again
- 26:12it was very that is
- 26:15here frustrating
- 26:21because when he was sick he'd completely
- 26:23forget that i have my needs too
- 26:26that i might want to eat too or need
- 26:28some daylight
- 26:31or i want to wash myself
- 26:33[Music]
- 26:36the pressure is building on the police
- 26:37to get results
- 26:40they decide to tap the telephone of
- 26:42natasha's mother
- 26:43they hope the kidnapper will try to get
- 26:45in touch
- 26:47a caller claims to be holding natasha
- 26:50captive but it's a hoax
- 26:53one of many
- 27:01going hungry was dreadful you almost
- 27:05feel like a drug addict and ask yourself
- 27:09why am i hungry why do i even feel
- 27:12hunger
- 27:13why can't i manage without food as
- 27:18common
- 27:22he would show me all the food there was
- 27:24before he gave me anything to eat
- 27:27but then he'd only cut off a tiny piece
- 27:29for me
- 27:30he decided exactly how much i got to eat
- 27:34he never let me have what i wanted or as
- 27:37much as i wanted
- 27:38because he said i moved around so little
- 27:42in the cell
- 27:43i didn't need
- 27:54[Music]
- 28:03he didn't want me to cry and each time i
- 28:06did
- 28:06he wrapped my tears into my face with
- 28:09the back of his hand
- 28:13or he took me by the throat and dragged
- 28:16me
- 28:17joking me to the bathroom where he held
- 28:20my face over the sink so i couldn't cry
- 28:23anymore
- 28:24he wouldn't let me cry because he was
- 28:26afraid the hydrochloric acid
- 28:29my tears would corrode his tiles
- 28:34[Music]
- 28:39he always forced me to look him straight
- 28:41in the eye or look
- 28:42down at the ground in a very submissive
- 28:45way
- 28:46of course i couldn't do that for long
- 28:49because i won't be forced
- 28:50to do anything against my will
- 28:57[Music]
- 29:00and of course he got back at me because
- 29:02of that
- 29:03he kept telling me i'm useless and
- 29:05worthless
- 29:06and that i'll never have a chance to
- 29:08escape and call men
- 29:17he just liked having someone to dominate
- 29:20and the more i resisted and answered
- 29:22back
- 29:23the more satisfying it was for him to
- 29:25put me down and
- 29:26dominate me to boost his own self-esteem
- 29:33he despised people he hated his
- 29:36neighbors
- 29:38although he was nice to them he hated
- 29:41his surroundings and society
- 29:44so he pretended to be a conformist
- 29:54was an only child and after the death of
- 29:57his father he developed a very intense
- 30:00relationship with his mother
- 30:06he placed high demands on women
- 30:09this is salty flakes
- 30:13they had to be well groomed slender and
- 30:16blonde
- 30:17blonde
- 30:20and
- 30:24of course these were hard demands to
- 30:27fulfill
- 30:34vandalism
- 30:38a private detective with his own
- 30:40theories about the crime
- 30:41mounts a campaign against the police's
- 30:43handling of the investigation
- 30:46as a result 120 files have to be
- 30:48transferred to a new
- 30:50police commission by the end there will
- 30:52be 167
- 30:54files natasha's body has supposedly been
- 30:59buried in an allotment
- 31:00nothing is found a year later the
- 31:03private detective insists on another dig
- 31:05he suspects natasha's mother
- 31:10the private detective cooked up a theory
- 31:13that i was having an affair with a
- 31:14businessman
- 31:16and natasha was in the way so we
- 31:18murdered her
- 31:19and buried her in a pond he owned it
- 31:24and the detective kept on at the police
- 31:27about digging there
- 31:28until they agreed and of course they
- 31:31found nothing
- 31:36[Music]
- 31:42you're locked up there in the dark
- 31:44there's no electricity
- 31:46and you're hungry and then yes you think
- 31:49to yourself
- 31:50what's the point why not put an end to
- 31:53all this
- 31:57but then you come to the conclusion
- 32:01that you mustn't give up
- 32:05because the whole thing is such a
- 32:06monstrous injustice
- 32:09you mustn't allow yourself to be
- 32:11defeated
- 32:13it was a kind of fighting spirit that
- 32:15kept me alive
- 32:27had to feel pressure he had lots of
- 32:29books
- 32:30and he'd probably kept all the books he
- 32:32had to read in school
- 32:35and then i got them later
- 32:38he went out and bought me non-fiction
- 32:41books
- 32:42because i like them and some
- 32:44dictionaries
- 32:46and books on philosophy
- 32:58i wanted to learn and discover things in
- 33:00my own way
- 33:02so i asked him to send me tests from
- 33:05maths books
- 33:08in mathematics
- 33:11he was good at maths so i asked him to
- 33:14mark the tests for me
- 33:16and he did this
- 33:20but unfortunately it's the way he did it
- 33:25he found mistakes everywhere and because
- 33:28he had this controlling side
- 33:30and he wanted to dominate me he just
- 33:33crossed everything out
- 33:34in red ink yes
- 33:39all that time i felt he wanted to be
- 33:42like some old-fashioned
- 33:43teacher i'm in charge here
- 33:46and that's probably how he was treated
- 33:48in his childhood
- 33:54i appreciated the fact that he was
- 33:57always
- 33:57polite and very reliable
- 34:00on the other hand he was rather shy and
- 34:03a bit
- 34:04introverted
- 34:08he always tried not to offend anyone and
- 34:10i'm sure he was a very obliging person
- 34:14neighbor son and grandson soon
- 34:28some time later the vienna city council
- 34:31offered their help they said something i
- 34:35shall never forget to this day
- 34:37i should buy a grave a plot so i could
- 34:39have a place to go
- 34:41to talk to natasha i left the office
- 34:44sat in my car and burst into tears
- 34:48i couldn't even drive home my soul does
- 34:52my child is alive she isn't dead natasha
- 34:56was never
- 34:56dead for me no one ever showed me any
- 34:59proof
- 35:00there was no evidence to the contrary so
- 35:03i always believed natasha was alive
- 35:06right through the eight and a half years
- 35:24[Laughter]
- 35:28foreign
- 35:34after a few years i could go out into
- 35:36the garden with him
- 35:38sometimes at night for five or ten
- 35:40minutes
- 35:42i was so happy i could touch the trees
- 35:45and the hedge
- 35:46and i could feel the grass and the wind
- 35:48on my skin
- 35:49because of course there's no wind in the
- 35:52house
- 35:54and it was so good i asked him
- 35:58if i could take a trick from the hedge
- 36:00back down to myself
- 36:02so i could always think about it as a
- 36:05kind of memento
- 36:07who takes something from the garden into
- 36:10the house
- 36:11to remember it by means housemates
- 36:18[Music]
- 36:24for a while i kept a diary a kind of
- 36:27workbook
- 36:29where i wrote down everything i did in
- 36:31the house
- 36:32clearing up this cleaning that
- 36:35siliconing
- 36:37i had to wash every towel by hand before
- 36:39it could be laid
- 36:41i had to check every tile for floors
- 36:43because of course you wouldn't use
- 36:45any tile that wasn't perfect i squeezed
- 36:48out sponges
- 36:49shoveled rubble carried heavy packets of
- 36:51tiles
- 36:52it was exhausting i was extremely weak
- 36:55and thin
- 37:02[Music]
- 37:06yeah the first few years i baked a cake
- 37:10for natasha on her birthday
- 37:13and chucked it away after a couple of
- 37:14weeks
- 37:16but i always tried to keep natasha alive
- 37:18in my mind
- 37:20to include her wherever she was i tried
- 37:23to let her know somehow
- 37:25maybe by telepathy that i was thinking
- 37:28of her
- 37:31and on my birthday i always remembered
- 37:34all the birthdays i had celebrated with
- 37:37lots of other kids
- 37:39and with a special cake
- 37:46and how different it is now all
- 37:51[Music]
- 38:02of course at the beginning nothing
- 38:07the kidnapping of course but
- 38:10all the humiliation and the other things
- 38:13didn't come till later
- 38:18then i really began to hate him for the
- 38:20way he was torturing me
- 38:25but maybe the secret the reason i
- 38:28survived all those years
- 38:30was because i forgave him for everything
- 38:34almost as soon as it happened
- 38:38[Music]
- 38:43i think if i hadn't forgiven him
- 38:50then i would have been so full of hate
- 38:57and negative feelings that it would have
- 39:00become
- 39:00unbearable and it would have destroyed
- 39:03me physically
- 39:08[Music]
- 39:12the kind of crime he committed
- 39:15is usually the result of some illness or
- 39:18injury
- 39:20and the person can't usually do anything
- 39:23about an illness
- 39:28but this criminal had a conscience
- 39:32he still had a conscience he was aware
- 39:35on some level of what he was doing
- 39:39you could see that he was weak and
- 39:42unstable
- 39:44because of some kind of illness or
- 39:46injury
- 39:48he had become so unstable that he saw
- 39:52the kidnapping as the solution to his
- 39:54problems
- 39:57it didn't matter what the problems
- 39:59really were
- 40:00or how he thought this could help but he
- 40:03did see it
- 40:04as a solution and
- 40:11and that actually made me feel
- 40:15pity and compassion for him
- 40:18because many people are looking for the
- 40:20meaning of their lives
- 40:33and he thought that if life hadn't given
- 40:36him what he wanted
- 40:38he must take it by force he felt
- 40:41that he must become like everything that
- 40:43had injured him
- 40:44and made him ill
- 40:49seven years have passed since natasha
- 40:51campus is kidnapping
- 40:52seven years in which she has grown into
- 40:54a young woman
- 40:55no one would recognize her now they're
- 40:58still looking for her
- 41:00or rather for a name in police files
- 41:04and that allows her kidnapper to take
- 41:05her out into the city
- 41:07even to work for him renovating an
- 41:09apartment
- 41:12many people ask why i didn't simply run
- 41:14away
- 41:15while he was busy
- 41:19but he always made sure i was carrying
- 41:21something heavy
- 41:23oh there was some other reason i
- 41:25couldn't just run
- 41:29he was very good at keeping up the
- 41:32pressure
- 41:40and i wasn't allowed to speak to anyone
- 41:44he said he'd kill anyone i spoke to
- 41:48or he'd kill me and anyone who'd seen me
- 41:54it was hopeless this was
- 42:03[Music]
- 42:08once we were on the way to the hardware
- 42:11store
- 42:12we got caught in a traffic jam and
- 42:16there was a police checkpoint up ahead
- 42:18of us
- 42:22there was a rather stocky policeman
- 42:24there
- 42:26a friendly type team they make a
- 42:29politicist
- 42:31but he didn't look too intelligent
- 42:37intelligence
- 42:40i tried to signal him with my eyes
- 42:44that something was wrong but he didn't
- 42:47pick it up
- 42:49he probably thought i was mentally
- 42:51disturbed or
- 42:52epileptic or something anyway he didn't
- 42:56notice or
- 42:57ask any questions he just checked the
- 43:00car documents and waved us through
- 43:08if someone jumps out of a car and starts
- 43:10pounding on the windows of
- 43:12other cars they don't look especially
- 43:15normal or
- 43:15trustworthy the way i looked at the time
- 43:20so thin and pale people might have
- 43:23thought that was crazy
- 43:29[Music]
- 43:39and in july 2006 her prickly pear called
- 43:43me
- 43:44and told me he wanted to borrow my
- 43:46trailer
- 43:50and one evening we drove to this hall so
- 43:52there's a highly fan
- 43:56and he had to pick up a trailer he owned
- 44:00or he owned with hulk's apple
- 44:04what's up
- 44:12but i didn't know if he was his
- 44:13accomplice
- 44:15or if you would believe me because he
- 44:17was obviously his best friend
- 44:23when he came he was accompanied by a
- 44:26young girl
- 44:29i saw the girl as i opened the door to
- 44:31the hall
- 44:33and he introduced her to me as an
- 44:36acquaintance i shook her hand and said
- 44:39hello
- 44:44that was hardly a situation where i
- 44:46could have said something
- 44:49so i didn't try to escape i just did
- 44:52what i was supposed to do
- 44:54shook his hand and said nothing the way
- 44:57he'd dropped it into me
- 45:02muslim then i had to leave
- 45:06because i was under time pressure
- 45:18i got everything that you want
- 45:22i like a heart that also true
- 45:26just call on me the senate
- 45:29lot with love for
- 45:36i could have committed suicide thought
- 45:39it was much better to be dead than
- 45:41locked up for good
- 45:42but that day thank heavens i found the
- 45:45courage
- 45:46and just ran away
- 45:51[Music]
- 45:56at 104 pm today a confused young girl
- 45:59was discovered in a garden in the town
- 46:01of strassov
- 46:02when police arrived the young woman
- 46:05claimed to be natasha campus
- 46:09he was talking on his cell phone and
- 46:12he'd
- 46:13told me to vacuum the van which i was
- 46:16doing
- 46:23the noise was so loud that he walked
- 46:25over to the swimming pool
- 46:27maybe 11 meters away he left the garden
- 46:31gate open
- 46:36so i grabbed the opportunity i left the
- 46:39vacuum cleaner on
- 46:40and ran away really really fast
- 46:44as fast as my legs could carry me
- 46:48when they searched the house police
- 46:50found a prison cell in the garage
- 46:53it has just been reported that the
- 46:55alleged kidnapper has committed suicide
- 46:58the drifter then apparently he drove to
- 47:01the train station
- 47:03and he laid down on the tracks then the
- 47:06train ran
- 47:06over his head then he was dead
- 47:16natasha campus becomes a media star
- 47:18overnight
- 47:19darling of the world's press the missed
- 47:22tip-off from the police dog handler
- 47:23causes a political storm
- 47:26there's talk of cover-ups mistakes
- 47:28half-truths
- 47:29austria's scandal-rat government resigns
- 47:32two years later
- 47:33the papers spread rumors of sado
- 47:35masochism
- 47:36child pornography rings and possible
- 47:39accomplices
- 47:41of course they want to make headlines
- 47:44child pornography and natasha campus
- 47:47are linked all the time that's so
- 47:50painful
- 47:58no pornography ring came by
- 48:01as far as i was concerned i only had
- 48:04contact with a kidnapper
- 48:06did he do something like that i don't
- 48:08think so because he didn't have the time
- 48:12but we'll never know
- 48:15we could only ask him and he would
- 48:17probably deny
- 48:18everything but no one would believe him
- 48:22because people like to hear stories
- 48:24about sadomasochism and child porn rings
- 48:27that's the way it is
- 48:30people love horrible things and they
- 48:32can't get enough of them
- 48:35they seek them out and exaggerate them
- 48:37and embellish them
- 48:39make them even more terrible and
- 48:40disgusting and revolting and vile
- 48:46people
- 48:55the press asked me straight out whether
- 48:57i was raped or sexually abused
- 48:59and that kind of thing but in my eyes
- 49:02the way the media treated me after my
- 49:05escape
- 49:06is a form of abuse too and they should
- 49:09be punished for it
- 49:26losing in many people i trigger some
- 49:28kind of unconscious aggression
- 49:31maybe the whole crime and what happened
- 49:34to me triggers aggression
- 49:36and i'm the only one they can still
- 49:38reach and so it all lands on me
- 49:41this upgrade
- 49:45i said to right from the start i said
- 49:48i'm not a victim
- 49:49because i knew that if i present myself
- 49:52as a victim
- 49:53and show everyone how terrible it was
- 49:56they'd never accept me as a normal
- 49:58person again
- 49:59they'd say you you've debased yourself
- 50:03so far
- 50:04what do you think you're doing here go
- 50:07back where you came from
- 50:09go back down to your filthy swamp
- 50:12that's how most people are that's how
- 50:14they think
- 50:16[Music]
- 50:19i just want people to treat me normally
- 50:25i deserve a chance like anyone else
- 50:28i think people should be glad a halfway
- 50:30survived all this
- 50:41[Music]
- 50:53you
