- 0:00It's a gorgeous Sunday in Northern
- 0:02California. Today it's the Toyota Save
- 0:05Mark 350. For racing on the road, we've
- 0:08got to talk about Shane Van Gizburg. And
- 0:10he is no doubt the favorite. The other
- 0:12drivers in this race that have a real
- 0:14shot to go out and slay number 97.
- 0:17>> Larson Reic, those two guys are going to
- 0:19be great today.
- 0:20>> Ty Gibbs is someone to watch in the 54.
- 0:23And the last guy I would put on the
- 0:25board for you, AJ Almondinger, making
- 0:27his 500th career start. Nine to go to
- 0:30running for a championship. We're green
- 0:32in Soma. Ty Gibbs getting after it out
- 0:35front with Carson Hosar
- 0:44playing through turn two. 77 Hosabar
- 0:47jumps to the race lead.
- 0:57SVG on the outside of Larson down into
- 0:59turn four.
- 1:04SVG down to the inside here. Just trying
- 1:06to get back in line. Battle for the lead
- 1:08up front. Side by side. They're going to
- 1:11argue through the essence here.
- 1:15>> There will be a lot of arguing
- 1:16throughout the day for position. Give it
- 1:18to Ty Gibbs.
- 1:21Saw it side by side. A change for fourth
- 1:23while we were away. AJ Almondinger able
- 1:25to get around Kyle Larson.
- 1:28>> Take a look at how it happened here
- 1:31down in a deep braking zone of turn 11.
- 1:33Look at the 16 spinning out almost into
- 1:36the corner. Uses the five to make the
- 1:39turn. Eight tires stick better than four
- 1:42in that case.
- 1:42>> I think there was an elbow stuck out
- 1:44there as he came through.
- 1:45>> Yeah. See, Bale had a little challenge
- 1:49on the racetrack. Let's take a look here
- 1:51up the hill. The 77 getting into the
- 1:53back bumper. Wow. Holy moly.
- 1:57Nice. You know, it's just a corner.
- 1:59You're heading up the hill and that's
- 2:02just not something that you need to be
- 2:04doing. And, you know, turning somebody
- 2:06sideways in such a high-speed corner of
- 2:08the racetrack. I don't know. That's just
- 2:10probably a mistake. I don't know if the
- 2:1120 may have gotten into the 77 at some
- 2:14point a lap before.
- 2:15>> Unscheduled for Daniel Suarez. He has a
- 2:18tire going down. He thinks they debated
- 2:20for a moment. Hey, do you want us to pit
- 2:22or you want me to try and let this thing
- 2:24live? What do you want me to do? They
- 2:25decided to pit. So, they bring him down
- 2:27pit road here. 11 to go. Really can't
- 2:29connect it from any here anything here,
- 2:31Steve. Strategy-wise, but they had to
- 2:33get that Goodyear tire off.
- 2:34>> Well, and the big concern in the garage
- 2:35area this morning was only four sets of
- 2:37sticker tires in your pits. So I had
- 2:39multiple crew chiefs say if you have a
- 2:41flat or spin out in stage one you are
- 2:43perhaps handcuffed for the rest of the
- 2:45day on being straightforward and not
- 2:47being very creative. So now we have
- 2:49Suarez leaving pit road. The bleacher
- 2:51report on board camera climbing up into
- 2:53turn two as Marty says can't connect it
- 2:56meaning running long into the next
- 2:57stage. So just an unfortunate turn of
- 2:59events for the seven as we see them
- 3:00march for the 19 of Chase Brisco
- 3:03continues. Car look good in practice.
- 3:06AJ Almaninger back in the eighth spot.
- 3:09Let's get 16 team radio.
- 3:12>> I think the toe knocked out a little
- 3:13bit.
- 3:15So, I just struggling gripwise overall.
- 3:18>> Copy. Be hard to hard to fix.
- 3:21>> I don't know if it hurt the car or I
- 3:23just suck, but it's not very good.
- 3:27>> And Tyler Reic is going the wrong
- 3:30direction. After qualifying 11 fell to
- 3:3317th, they said you are losing in turn
- 3:35two. That is our biggest loss. They're
- 3:37trying to get better in that section of
- 3:40the racetrack
- 3:41>> as pit roads busy. Rinse and repeat
- 3:43leaders coming now down into turn 11
- 3:46again. We will see if now the 54 decides
- 3:49to pit or he's going to stay out for the
- 3:50stage win. Well, there you go. He's
- 3:52going to make the decision easy. Now SVG
- 3:54is going to try to get committed to pit
- 3:56road before the 54 closes pit road. He
- 3:59has to get all the way around. There you
- 4:01go. He's now committed. Pit road was
- 4:03still open when he did it. Other cars
- 4:05are also jumping to pit road.
- 4:07>> Marty 97 on the pit road in front of
- 4:09you.
- 4:10>> Yeah, this was that decision marker that
- 4:12we talked about for the 97 team again
- 4:14outside of a chase spot coming into the
- 4:16race here at Soma, but clearly feel like
- 4:18they have a car that can win. Kyle
- 4:20Larson also on pit road and not a word
- 4:23from SVG after he's at court early on.
- 4:25We are terrible but was one of the
- 4:27fastest cars. The later the run went on
- 4:30SVG for fresh Goodyear tires. They'll
- 4:33skip the points here in stage one and
- 4:34put themselves in a position to possibly
- 4:36win the race.
- 4:37>> And he's going to win the opening stage
- 4:39here at Soma. His second stage win of
- 4:41the campaign, his first since he did it
- 4:44on the road course in Austin, Texas,
- 4:46Circuit of the Americas.
- 4:4823 cars flipped the stage. But we have a
- 4:51developing situation here with Tyler
- 4:53Reic and the number 45 car guys. His
- 4:55team has gone under the hood. Jimmy,
- 4:56what do you think it is?
- 4:57>> Yeah, it sounds like something in the
- 4:58powered steering. We had this issue a
- 5:00couple times last year. um they might be
- 5:02able to to fix it and improve it, but as
- 5:05this issue develops, it's just eating
- 5:07the internal parts uh out out of the
- 5:09power steering unit.
- 5:10>> I don't know much, but I would say that
- 5:12not having power steering at a road
- 5:13course sucks.
- 5:14>> Leaders in the Echo Park automotive
- 5:16restart zone, Shane Van Gizburg and Kyle
- 5:19Larson getting us going in the second
- 5:22stage.
- 5:37All the nine of Chase Elliot off the
- 5:39dirt a little bit there.
- 5:41Cost him a little bit of grip and a spot
- 5:43to the 88 of Zillich.
- 5:46>> Little contact with the 24 and Denny
- 5:48Hamlin.
- 5:49>> Yeah, William Byron musling up down to
- 5:51turn four.
- 5:53>> What did you say earlier? They're
- 5:54arguing for position. Dale,
- 5:56>> look at Denny back to the inside. That's
- 5:57not over with.
- 5:59>> Byron might send Denny an email based on
- 6:02that paint scheme the 11's running this
- 6:04week. You see Bubba Wallace off track.
- 6:06He there. You see the cars to the speed
- 6:08over to the right. So he got sent off to
- 6:11the left. Yeah, looks like might have
- 6:13missed turn eight. I'm not sure if he
- 6:15made any contact with the barrier of the
- 6:16wall over there.
- 6:19>> Very delicately merges back in. Todd
- 6:21Gillan going to take advantage. Justin
- 6:23Hill there in the 33. Bubba was top 10
- 6:27now being scored 20 seconds. Just gets a
- 6:29little bit loose in the S's overorrects
- 6:33it. He knows that he's not on the
- 6:36racetrack anymore. Right. So, let's see.
- 6:40Got a little too much curb right there.
- 6:43And so, that puts him on this runoff
- 6:45here. He comes to a stop because he
- 6:46thinks he needs to serve a penalty. He
- 6:48doesn't. Right.
- 6:49>> Yeah. The stop's unnecessary.
- 6:51>> Yeah. Yeah, he's going to have to do a
- 6:52little
- 6:54>> Well, we say the stop's unnecessary, but
- 6:55it's a judgment call. So, he's obviously
- 6:58over there in distress, getting too
- 6:59loose, as you pointed out, Dale. I He
- 7:01probably has no idea where he's going to
- 7:03rejoin the racetrack. Not something you
- 7:04practice. So, I'm afraid if he gasses up
- 7:06and he blends in about the same spot.
- 7:08NASCAR could at that point say, "Nope,
- 7:10you cut the course." And that's a pass
- 7:11through, which is a 25second penalty. He
- 7:14decides to give some back early in the
- 7:16race. I think I like that call from
- 7:18Bubba. Just making sure you don't have
- 7:19to serve any sort of second penalty.
- 7:21what is already a mistake. Just over 10
- 7:23laps to go. Stage two, Soma, California.
- 7:26Side by side on TNT. You saw a little
- 7:29movement off the pavement
- 7:32here on the road course.
- 7:36Yeah, let's take a look. 23 gets loose
- 7:39in the breaking zone. He's about to
- 7:41crash. So, luckily, he's able to
- 7:45land in the lap of the 34 car.
- 7:48>> Yeah. The 34 though,
- 7:49>> he wasn't very happy. No. He said,
- 7:51"Listen, I know it was a mistake, but
- 7:53your mistake cost me. So, I'm going to
- 7:55find you here entering turn two, and I'm
- 7:57going to make sure that you don't make
- 7:59turn two."
- 8:01>> Bubba ends up in the dirt.
- 8:04And just seconds later, 34 says, "You
- 8:06know what? One's not enough.
- 8:08>> I'm going to get both.
- 8:08>> We're going to get one more."
- 8:09>> You know, I'M SO MAD AT BUBBA. I'm going
- 8:11to get his teammate, too.
- 8:12>> I mean, what a rough ride for 2311
- 8:15today. They were so good last week. And
- 8:17you think about here today, Reic having
- 8:20the issues. He's made multiple pit stops
- 8:22six laps down.
- 8:23>> Let's see. I assume the 97 pit. So now
- 8:25the question I have is do Blaney and
- 8:27Zillich come in. Gibbs and Bell I think
- 8:30we saw their strategy. They won stage
- 8:31one. Look how much a head start the 97
- 8:34has. He's going to come all the way
- 8:36around there. It's going to answer your
- 8:37question. Blay Zillich come to pit road.
- 8:41Ty Gibbs stays on the racetrack. He will
- 8:43be the leader and probably have the best
- 8:44chance to win the stage. Marty,
- 8:46>> you see SVG coming down pit road. So
- 8:48that last adjustment really helped. I
- 8:50need more of that. But the long run
- 8:52speed in the 97 just exceptional. And
- 8:55even though they're going to flip stage
- 8:57two here, don't be surprised if SVG
- 8:59gains a decent amount of stage points
- 9:01here as well. See his teammate Connor
- 9:03Zillich who is keeping pace with SVG on
- 9:06the longer run. Very impressive day for
- 9:08Connor Zilla. Shannon,
- 9:09>> I look at these drivers running it long.
- 9:11I go right to position number four.
- 9:13Austin Cynric going to get some stage
- 9:15points here. I talked to Brian Wilson,
- 9:17his crew chief, yesterday. He said it's
- 9:19been a blueco collar effort. Lot of runs
- 9:21this season between eighth and 14th as
- 9:24they nickel and dime their way into a
- 9:26chase position and trying to get some
- 9:28stage points here. Well, think about
- 9:29this. With this win, Gibbs will have
- 9:31scored 20 stage points. He came in today
- 9:34only a point behind Larson in the
- 9:36standings, 50-ish behind Blay. So, this
- 9:38is a driver who is thinking moving up.
- 9:40And how about Bell? What a day. He had
- 9:42slipped to 12th with this wrist injury.
- 9:45No matter what happens, he has scored a
- 9:47ton. 18 stage points for the injured
- 9:49driver of the 20.
- 9:51>> Get out the broom. It's a sweep for Tai
- 9:53Gibbs who wins stage one and stage two
- 9:56from the pole here at Soma. Bell
- 9:59Almondinger, Cedric Chastain, the top
- 10:01five. Final stage starts now on TNT.
- 10:11Lane choice always a debate. SVG making
- 10:14the right lane. An obvious choice from
- 10:16the front row, the back back of the
- 10:18field to have to figure it out up over
- 10:19the crest of turn two.
- 10:22Risco noses through to third. Blaney and
- 10:25Larson trying to settle fourth as SVG
- 10:28gets away with the lead.
- 10:29>> Looked like AJ Armonder got shoved in
- 10:31the dirt a little bit right there in the
- 10:32back of the field. Everybody trying to
- 10:34figure it out. More contact.
- 10:38>> 51 to go in the race. A pit stop still
- 10:41required, but with no natural yellows
- 10:43today. You can see everybody's
- 10:45anticipation as we have a big stack up
- 10:47on the inside lane into turn seven. So
- 10:50much contact back in the pack and lots
- 10:52of toe toe links getting bent. Front
- 10:55ends getting banged around.
- 10:57>> SVG really wide out of four there. Loves
- 10:59that higher line to be able to carry the
- 11:01speed. Oh, lots of contact back here in
- 11:03the pack.
- 11:04>> The flying burries there. Noah Greson in
- 11:07the four and the caution is out. Steve
- 11:10just said it. Clean race. Only cautions
- 11:12prior to now. We're the end of stage one
- 11:15and stage two. Our first for a problem
- 11:17on track. 61 laps into this race.
- 11:20>> Trying to see what the yellow was for
- 11:22right here. We're going to see some
- 11:23contact.
- 11:24221.
- 11:27>> Yeah, I couldn't tell if Josh turned
- 11:29into the corner. Unknow, you know,
- 11:31unknowingly coming across the nose of
- 11:33the two car. Cynric is hard to tell from
- 11:35that vantage point, but just a contact
- 11:37between the two and the 21 spins Josh
- 11:40around. Then a stack up with some other
- 11:42cars.
- 11:44>> Probably
- 11:52everybody lucky to get through there.
- 11:54Actually,
- 11:54>> I thought Busher was going to be a
- 11:55yellow by himself because that thing was
- 11:58spinning out off the curb. Oh, there you
- 12:00go. teammates Shane Van Gizburg and
- 12:02Connor Zilich
- 12:05great great
- 12:14>> man. Not a great restart for Zilich. I
- 12:16don't know if that was team orders or
- 12:18whatever, but
- 12:20if it was, he's giving up possibly
- 12:22second position to Brisco. Every pass,
- 12:24every race, every position battle here
- 12:26is for the win. That's the way you got
- 12:28to approach these races.
- 12:32>> If that was team orders, I'd be arguing
- 12:34the next time I heard it over the radio.
- 12:36The five and the 12, the five and the
- 12:3812, excuse me. The nine of Chase Elliot
- 12:41offline drivers left. And look at the
- 12:44swarm of bees to the right. Two and
- 12:45three wide. They still have them out of
- 12:47the groove.
- 12:48>> Yeah. Almost.
- 12:48>> Oh, we got a car around the 11 of
- 12:50Hamlin. Lots of positions.
- 12:52>> He was up there inside the top 10 riding
- 12:55seventh. goes around in seven and with
- 12:57all these cars on the lead lap just
- 12:59losing so many.
- 13:00>> Let's take a look and see how Denny got
- 13:02turned around here. It's kind of shipped
- 13:04off into the corner. A little contact to
- 13:05the nose there. That's not ideal.
- 13:11Another look at it right there. Just
- 13:13three wide Hosamar with his nose in
- 13:15there.
- 13:16>> You knew it. Boy,
- 13:18>> something about this 19 all
- 13:20>> Oh, the nine's around coming out of turn
- 13:23four. Chase Elliot spins. All right,
- 13:24good to roll.
- 13:26>> Well, Joey Chimit stops coming back.
- 13:29>> Saw a couple of those yesterday in
- 13:31practice and qualifying.
- 13:32>> I couldn't tell. Somebody got him in the
- 13:34red bumper.
- 13:35>> The 42 spinning out.
- 13:37>> He's not done spinning out.
- 13:38>> Look out.
- 13:39>> See you behind the tree. Just the 34.
- 13:41Then you're good.
- 13:44>> I can't tell if he got help from the
- 13:46two. Cynric or not.
- 13:47>> Yeah, Cynric was right up there on the
- 13:49back bumper.
- 13:51>> Oh, listen.
- 13:57Oh, I think he actually climbed up on
- 13:59top of the curb there. He definitely hit
- 14:01the curb. I can't tell if there was a
- 14:02bump from behind, but the nine
- 14:03definitely got himself out of shape with
- 14:05all that internal curb. It's really good
- 14:08for second.
- 14:09>> Zillich looking inside turn seven.
- 14:11Little contact.
- 14:14>> He had the bump. Just didn't have the
- 14:16run to get by Brisco there. 19 stays in
- 14:19that runnerup spot.
- 14:22Chase Brisco in for service here. James
- 14:25Small likes his pace overall. Says the
- 14:28balance is good. Pit stop here. It'll be
- 14:31four tires down and away. Marty,
- 14:33>> career day for Connor Zillich so far.
- 14:36Can he bring it home maybe with a win.
- 14:38OH, A SLOW STOP THERE for the 88. That's
- 14:40going to cost him just a little bit.
- 14:42Said he was too tight in the
- 14:44righthander. So, we'll see how much
- 14:45track position you want it to happen
- 14:47under green, not under caution, don't
- 14:48you, Steve? For the 88. And Michael
- 14:51McDow much better on the longer run for
- 14:52that 71 taking his service here with 28
- 14:55to go as well.
- 14:56>> And the hiccup for Connor Zilich as he
- 14:58made his exit.
- 15:02>> A just stalled it.
- 15:05Luckily the car refired pretty quickly.
- 15:07Was able to drive away. It's Marty the
- 15:1097 of SPG in front of you.
- 15:12>> Yes, Steve. Once he started to stretch
- 15:14his legs as you mentioned a junior a
- 15:15moment ago, he built that lead up to 7
- 15:17seconds for Shane Van Gizburg. as he
- 15:20comes to pit road here. He's done his
- 15:22job. Now it's up to the pit crew. Said
- 15:24he was struggling with the fronts and
- 15:25the rears and he felt like the last set
- 15:27of tires were the worst of the day.
- 15:29Hopefully they get a better one on here.
- 15:31We'll see where he cycles out now.
- 15:33>> He's at the end exiting the pit lane.
- 15:36And here comes Brisco across the start
- 15:39finish line. The blend up the hill.
- 15:41>> Oh, the 97 has it by 20 25 car lengths.
- 15:44That and this is the battle right now. I
- 15:46think the best one on the racetrack
- 15:47between Larson and Zilich.
- 15:50And Larson has taken it.
- 15:53Thought Zillich would be able to drive
- 15:54away from this five car because
- 15:58you he held that track position during
- 16:00the pit cycle, but maybe a little bit of
- 16:02an tire advantage on the five. It's only
- 16:03a lap, but let's take a look and see how
- 16:06this pass happened.
- 16:10Yeah, the breaking zone of turn 11.
- 16:14Larson down in there stays off the door
- 16:16of the 88. Good clean pass
- 16:19and he was pretty far back to be able to
- 16:22make that move. I was really impressed
- 16:24that he didn't didn't end up in the door
- 16:26of the 88 car. Might have caught the 88
- 16:28by surprise. My goodness.
- 16:32The 88 struggling a little bit in the
- 16:34breaking zone. I guess some balance of
- 16:36the car just doesn't look quite as good
- 16:37as the run before Zilich. Rad Keslowski
- 16:40able to slide by Austin Cynric a lot on
- 16:45the line here.
- 16:46>> Yeah, late dive bomb down into turn 11
- 16:49and I don't think that made Cric very
- 16:52happy.
- 16:53Felt like it. Look, look at there. And
- 16:56then I
- 16:58>> I think Cynric went after him at the top
- 17:00of turn two
- 17:01>> and missed
- 17:02>> and missed. Yeah,
- 17:03>> I say a lot on the line. Inseason
- 17:05challenge. We documented that. And those
- 17:07are two drivers fighting right around
- 17:09the chase cut line. It is another battle
- 17:12for position. Tai Gibbs going after
- 17:14Zillich for fourth. The incredible run
- 17:17continues for the 54.
- 17:20>> Zillich just lets him go. I mean, it's
- 17:22not much to do there. The 54 is so much
- 17:24faster all day long. And
- 17:25>> I was about to do a report about how Ty
- 17:28Dylan was going to knock off Denny
- 17:29Hamlin once again. Dylan a moment ago
- 17:32was running in the top 20 and just
- 17:35started losing power steering. Hamlin
- 17:37now only a couple of spots behind Ty
- 17:40Dylan. Can he hang on for these final 12
- 17:42laps and for the second straight year
- 17:45have this colleague team knock off Denny
- 17:47Hamlin?
- 17:48>> Yeah, with four laps to go
- 17:50>> right there heading up to turn one. I
- 17:53think Larson understands that
- 17:56>> totally just cooked it into turn one.
- 18:01He's sitting there with an opportunity
- 18:02and he knows it because SVG is
- 18:04struggling here to catch the seven and
- 18:06SVG's losing performance in the car.
- 18:10>> So the the 19 sees this out his
- 18:13windshield and he's pushing and pushing
- 18:15harder. Just asking a little bit too
- 18:16much, but it's not over yet. A lot of
- 18:19laps left.
- 18:20>> Talk about SVG trying to match Tony
- 18:22Stewart for second on the alltime wins
- 18:24list when it comes to road course
- 18:26victories. Tony Stewart was Chase
- 18:28Brisco's hero growing up and now he's
- 18:31driving the 19 for Joe Gibbs Racing and
- 18:34trying to run down SVG. Two laps to go
- 18:36at Soma. Hard to believe it, but
- 18:39Brisco's strongest part of the racetrack
- 18:41is in the breaking zones. You think
- 18:43that'd be SVG strength
- 18:46now up the hill. SVG with a little
- 18:48traffic in front.
- 18:51Does the 51 lay over and get out of the
- 18:53way of the leaders? He's going to race
- 18:55down into the corner. It's going to slow
- 18:57SVG up. It's not a good situation.
- 19:00Can SVG make the pass in the breaking
- 19:02zone of four?
- 19:04Not able to do it. Has to follow the 51
- 19:07through into the breaking zone.
- 19:10Brisco with a much easier path now.
- 19:14Look at the breaking the 19 has into
- 19:16turn seven. Big charge for Chase Brisco
- 19:23through the S's.
- 19:27The issue is as close as the 19 gets to
- 19:29the 97, he then starts to struggle with
- 19:31arrow. He has no tire left. Neither one
- 19:35of these cars have any tire left.
- 19:37They're both struggling, hanging on,
- 19:38just trying to stay on the asphalt as
- 19:41they come out of turn 10.
- 19:4519 just trying to get close in the
- 19:47breaking. It's incredible how much he
- 19:49gains on SVG into turn 11. Back to the
- 19:53white flag. One lap to go. Sponsored by
- 19:56Credit One Bank. Van Gizburg and in
- 19:59front of Brisco.
- 20:00>> SVG cannot allow the 19 to have an
- 20:03opportunity in the 11. That is what
- 20:06Brisco is trying to do this entire lap
- 20:08is close the gap all the way back to the
- 20:12end of the lap.
- 20:12>> And if you're SPG, I think you believe
- 20:14it's going to be all about the S's.
- 20:16You're the best changing direction. Even
- 20:18with a car that's fading, you got to get
- 20:20down into this braking zone. This is the
- 20:22first opportunity that the 19 will be
- 20:23able to collect and get a run on you.
- 20:26Success so far for now the 97. It's turn
- 20:29seven and hit your marks down the S's.
- 20:3419's right there. He wants to be able to
- 20:37keep this distance all the way through
- 20:39the S's. But SVG needs a little bit more
- 20:41of a buffer so that Brisco can't reach
- 20:44him in the breaking zone. We always talk
- 20:46about the importance of turn 10. Setting
- 20:48up that run and that opportunity at turn
- 20:5111.
- 20:53>> Frisco's there. He's closing the gap.
- 20:57>> Turn to 11. 19 is dancing. Here's Shane
- 21:00Van Gizburgen into the hairpin.
- 21:05>> Brisco charges in. Can't make the pass.
- 21:08We're racing in wine country and Shane
- 21:11Van Gizburgen is the toast of the town.
- 21:14He wins again at Soma.
