- 0:02- How do you do?
- 0:04I'm very happy to have this personal visit with you.
- 0:07Won't you to be seated, please.
- 0:11And now, may I request that you forget all your problems
- 0:14and just relax while I bring you the master key
- 0:17with which you may unlock the door
- 0:19to any opportunity that your mind can conceive.
- 0:23Right here at the beginning of our visit,
- 0:26I'm going to make you a promise.
- 0:29If you will decide definitely
- 0:30what you want most during your entire lifetime
- 0:34and write it down on paper so that I can read it,
- 0:38I will give you the master key with which you may open
- 0:40the door to the attainment of your desires,
- 0:43whatever they may be.
- 0:45The exact moment when I will deliver this master key
- 0:48to you will depend entirely upon
- 0:52when you are ready to receive it.
- 0:54This is the first of 13 messages that I will deliver to you.
- 0:59Now in each message, I will describe the master key in terms
- 1:02that you will understand if you are ready to understand.
- 1:06And now I shall give you the first cue as to the nature
- 1:10of the great master key which has been responsible
- 1:13for all the great successes in every calling
- 1:16in every part of the world.
- 1:19Please listen carefully to what I have to say
- 1:21because you may discover the secret of the master key
- 1:25in this first visit.
- 1:27You may get your first cue as
- 1:29to the nature of the great master key
- 1:32when I tell you that psychologists have discovered
- 1:34a natural law which is the very foundation
- 1:36of all personal successes.
- 1:39And I can describe it to you in one short sentence
- 1:42so you can understand it,
- 1:44whatever the mind can conceive and believe
- 1:48the mind can achieve.
- 1:50Isn't that a profound statement?
- 1:53You will notice that it says nothing about the need
- 1:56for education, but simply that whatever your mind
- 1:59can conceive and believe your mind can achieve.
- 2:03Now, if you want evidence that the mind can achieve
- 2:06whatever the mind can conceive without the benefit
- 2:09of formal education, you'll have to remember
- 2:13that Thomas A. Edison conceived the idea of becoming
- 2:16an inventor and live to become
- 2:19the world's greatest scientists in the field of invention
- 2:24with only three months of common school education.
- 2:27When I first heard Andrew Carnegie describe
- 2:29this natural law which makes it possible for you and I
- 2:33and everyone else to write his own price tag
- 2:35in life and attain it, I became so enthused over it
- 2:39that I began to search for the power back of it.
- 2:42And my curiosity led me finally
- 2:44to the discovery of the master key
- 2:47which I should have reveal to you
- 2:49if you are ready to receive it.
- 2:52My search led me to the study of the spiritual forces
- 2:55with which all of us are blessed.
- 2:57And it was in this field that came upon a clue
- 3:00which has enabled me to help millions of people
- 3:03to find their earthly destinies.
- 3:06I wanna describe my discovery in the simplest terms possible
- 3:10because it will reveal to you why it is true
- 3:12that whatever the mind can conceive
- 3:15and believe the mind can achieve regardless
- 3:19of how many times you may have failed in the past
- 3:22or how lofty or aims and hopes maybe.
- 3:25I got my first fleeting glimpse of the profound law
- 3:29which provides the means by which
- 3:31we may choose our own purpose in life and attain it
- 3:34while I was being coached by Andrew Carnegie
- 3:37during the organization
- 3:38of the science of success philosophy.
- 3:41I had just finished telling Mr. Carnegie
- 3:43that I feared he had chosen the wrong person
- 3:45to give the world first practical philosophy
- 3:48of personal success because of my youth,
- 3:51my lack of education and my lack of finances.
- 3:55Well, at this point, Mr. Carnegie delivered a lecture
- 3:57that I shall never forget because it changed my entire life
- 4:01and paved the way for my helping you change
- 4:04the lives of millions of people some of them not yet born.
- 4:08Let me call your attention to a great power
- 4:11which is under your control, said Mr. Carnegie,
- 4:14A power which is greater than poverty,
- 4:17greater than the lack of education
- 4:19greater than all of your fears and superstitions combined.
- 4:24It is the power to take possession of your own mind
- 4:27and direct it to whatever ends you may desire.
- 4:30This profound power, Mr. Carnegie continued,
- 4:34is the gift of the creator and it must have been considered
- 4:37the greatest of all of his gifts to men
- 4:40because it is the only thing over which man has the complete
- 4:43and unchallengeable right of control and direction.
- 4:47When you speak of your poverty and lack of education,
- 4:50Mr. Carnegie explained, you are simply directing
- 4:53your mind power to attract these on desirable circumstances
- 4:57because it is true that whatever your mind feeds upon
- 5:01your mind attracts to you.
- 5:03Now you see why it is important that you recognize
- 5:06that all success begins with definite there's a purpose
- 5:10with a clear picture in your mind of precisely
- 5:13what you want from life.
- 5:15Then Mr. Carnegie continued his speech
- 5:18with a description of a great universal truth
- 5:21which made it such an impact upon my mind that I began then
- 5:25and there to give myself a new outlook on life.
- 5:29And I set up for myself the goals of far above
- 5:32my previous achievements that it shocked my friends
- 5:35and relatives when they heard about it.
- 5:38Everyone said, Mr. Carnegie comes to
- 5:40the earth blain blessed with the privilege
- 5:42of controlling his mind power and directing it
- 5:45to whatever ends he may choose, but, he continued,
- 5:49everyone brings over with him at birth
- 5:51the equivalent of two sealed envelopes.
- 5:54One of which is clearly labeled the riches you may enjoy
- 5:59if you take possession of your own mind
- 6:01and direct it to the ends of your own choice.
- 6:05And the other is labeled, the penalties you must be
- 6:09if you neglect to take possession
- 6:11of your mind and direct it.
- 6:14And now let me reveal to you, said Mr. Carnegie,
- 6:16the contents of those two sealed envelopes.
- 6:20In the one labeled riches is this list of blessings.
- 6:27One, sound health, two, peace of mind,
- 6:32three, a labor of love of your own choice,
- 6:36four, freedom from fear and worry,
- 6:39five, a positive mental attitude,
- 6:43six, material riches of your own choice and quantity.
- 6:48In the sealed envelope labeled penalties,
- 6:51Mr. Carnegie continued, is this list of
- 6:54the prices one must pay if are neglecting
- 6:57to take possession of his own mind.
- 6:59One, ill health, two, fear and worry,
- 7:04three, indecision and doubt,
- 7:07four, frustration and the discouragement throughout life,
- 7:12five, poverty and want, six,
- 7:15and a whole flock of evils consisting
- 7:18of envy, greed, jealousy, anger, hatred and superstition.
- 7:25Now, my mission in life is to help you
- 7:28and everyone who needs my help to open up
- 7:31and use the contents of the sealed envelope labeled riches
- 7:36and the starting point from what you must take off
- 7:38if you wish to write your own ticket from here on out
- 7:41for the remainder of your life, I will describe for you
- 7:44in these simple instructions.
- 7:46One, procure a neat pocket size notebook
- 7:52or something on the order of this one here,
- 7:53loose leaf affair.
- 7:56And on the page one, write down a clear description
- 7:59of your major desire in life, the one circumstance
- 8:03or position or thing, which you will be willing
- 8:05to accept as your idea of success.
- 8:08And remember, before you begin writing
- 8:11that your only limitations are those which you set up
- 8:14in your own mind or permit others to set up for you.
- 8:18And two, on page two of your notebook, write down
- 8:23a clear statement of precisely what you intend
- 8:26to give in return for that which you desire from life.
- 8:29And then start and write where you stand now
- 8:32to begin giving and three, memorize both of your statements,
- 8:39what you desire and what you intend to give in return for it
- 8:43and repeat them at least a dozen times daily
- 8:46and always end your statements with this expression
- 8:50of gratitude for the blessings
- 8:52with which you were gifted at birth.
- 8:54I ask not, oh divine providence for more riches
- 8:59but moral wisdom with which to accept and use wisely
- 9:02the riches I received at birth in the form of the power
- 9:06to control and direct my mind to whatever ends I desire.
- 9:11If you are not too successful or self satisfied to accept
- 9:14and express this profound prayer,
- 9:17if you accept it and express it in the same spirit
- 9:20of humble sincerity in which I pass it on to you
- 9:23a new and a better world will reveal itself to you.
- 9:27A world in which you will see reflected the circumstances
- 9:30and the things which you yourself have created.
- 9:33Next, I will give you a description
- 9:35of the second principle of success through the application
- 9:38of which you may make use of the education
- 9:41and experience of other people
- 9:43and get the necessary help you may need
- 9:46in attaining your definite major purpose in life.
- 9:49And now let me close this our first visit
- 9:52with my favorite expression of gratitude.
- 9:55Oh divine providence, I asked not for more riches,
- 9:59but moral wisdom with which to make wiser use
- 10:01of the riches you gave me the birth consisting in the power
- 10:04to control and direct my own mind to whatever ends I desire.
- 10:11We come now to the second of the 17 principles which lead
- 10:15to the master key with which you may open the door
- 10:17to the attainment of your definite major purpose in life.
- 10:20This principle of success is called
- 10:23the master mind principle.
- 10:25I want you to understand the nature
- 10:27of the mastermind principle because you must use it
- 10:30before you can take possession of the master key.
- 10:33An understandable definition of the mastermind is this,
- 10:37it consists of two or more people who work
- 10:39in perfect harmony for the attainment of a definite purpose.
- 10:43Now, here are some interesting facts about
- 10:45the master mind which give you an idea
- 10:48of how important it is and how necessary
- 10:50that you embrace this principle and make use of it
- 10:53in attaining success in your chosen occupation.
- 10:56First of all, it is the principle through which
- 10:59you may borrow and use the education, the experience,
- 11:02the influence, and perhaps the capital of other people
- 11:06in carrying out your own plans in life.
- 11:09It is the principle through which you can accomplish
- 11:11in one year more than you could accomplish
- 11:14without it in a lifetime if you depended entirely
- 11:17upon your own efforts for success.
- 11:20And I have heard well informed Bible students say
- 11:23that the first known application of the master mind
- 11:27was that which existed between the Nazarene
- 11:30and his 12 disciples.
- 11:32Of one fact I am absolutely sure,
- 11:36when you form a true master mind alliance with others
- 11:39and work with them in a spirit of perfect harmony,
- 11:43you can draw freely upon the spiritual forces within you
- 11:47in carrying out your plans and desires.
- 11:51I also know that the master mind principle
- 11:54can give you absolute protection against failure provided
- 11:57always that your purpose in using this principle
- 12:01is beneficial to all whom you influence.
- 12:04In my research while organizing the science of success,
- 12:07I had the collaboration of practically
- 12:09every outstanding successful man this country has produced
- 12:13during the past 50 years.
- 12:15And I can tell you definitely that their success was due
- 12:18in the main to their knowledge
- 12:20and application of the master mind principle.
- 12:23I wish also to call your attention to the fact
- 12:26that our great American way of life
- 12:28and our unmatchable system of free enterprise
- 12:31has been built upon the master mind principle.
- 12:34The greatest document ever conceived by the mind of man
- 12:38is a perfect example of the master mind principle in action.
- 12:41It is the declaration of independence and the best evidence
- 12:45of the importance of maintaining perfect harmony
- 12:47in a master mind alliance may be found in the fact that
- 12:50the 56 men who signed the declaration of independence
- 12:54knew full well that it might turn out to be either
- 12:58a license of freedom for all mankind or a death warrant
- 13:02which would cause each of the signers to be hanged.
- 13:05Now, let us see how the master mind principle
- 13:08has brought success to people whom we all know.
- 13:11First consider when Kate Smith began her career as a singer.
- 13:16She had difficulty in earning enough
- 13:17from her singing to pay living expenses
- 13:20and she perhaps never would have made to her singing pay
- 13:23if she had not discovered and applied
- 13:25the master mind principle which gave her access
- 13:28to the master key to success when she formed
- 13:31a master mind alliance with Ted Collins.
- 13:33And according to a report I saw in Reader's Digest,
- 13:37Kate Smith has earned upwards of $30 million
- 13:41and she is still in the upper brackets of income.
- 13:44Two, I remember when Edgar Bergen and that cute little block
- 13:48of wood known as Charlie McCarthy used to play anywhere
- 13:51they could get an engagement and I rather suspect
- 13:54that often, all they got for their services was a meal.
- 13:58But Edgar Bergen is a smart man
- 14:00in the field of entertainment.
- 14:02So he formed a master mind alliance which introduced him
- 14:05and Charlie to millions of people by radio and television.
- 14:09And I suspect he is not concerned about money any longer.
- 14:15And you may be surprised when I tell you
- 14:17that the great Ford industrial empire started
- 14:20with the formation of a master mind alliance
- 14:22between Henry Ford and his wife.
- 14:25At the beginning of his career,
- 14:26Henry Ford was shy and lacking self-confidence.
- 14:30It was Mrs. Ford who inspired Henry Ford
- 14:33with a faith and the courage to go ahead
- 14:35with the perfection of his horseless carriage.
- 14:38Although his relatives and neighbors generally tried
- 14:42to discourage him from wasting his time
- 14:44with the contraption as they call it.
- 14:46Four, the federation of the states known
- 14:49as the United States of America is the richest
- 14:51and the most powerful nation civilization has yet produced.
- 14:55And the secret of our strength
- 14:56and riches consists in our form of government
- 14:59through which all our states function in a spirit
- 15:02of harmony based on the master mind principle
- 15:05through is central federal government located at Washington.
- 15:09And not only a word to you personally
- 15:12if you work for a salary or wages,
- 15:14you have a marvelous opportunity to promote yourself
- 15:17into a higher income and a more responsible position
- 15:20by forming a master mind alliance
- 15:22with your associate workers including the management.
- 15:25In my next visit, I will give you further instructions
- 15:28on how to apply the master mind principles
- 15:31so as to increase your own income
- 15:33and promote yourself to a higher position
- 15:35with the full cooperation of your management.
- 15:38Yes, that is correct.
- 15:40I will show you how to write your own price tag,
- 15:44fix your own wages, establish your own working hours
- 15:48and give yourself financial independence.
- 15:52But, right now I want you to do three things
- 15:55before our next visit.
- 15:56First, decide definitely where you wish to be
- 15:59and what you wish to be doing during the next three years.
- 16:02And second decide how much money you desire to be making
- 16:06and what you are going to do to earn it.
- 16:08And third, form a master mind alliance
- 16:11with at least one person in your immediate family
- 16:14and at least one other person among those
- 16:17to whom you are selling your services.
- 16:19By taking these three steps, you will have gone a long way
- 16:23toward appropriating the great master key to success.
- 16:26There is no such thing as something for nothing.
- 16:29Everything including your personal success
- 16:32has a price that must be paid.
- 16:34And the only price you are requested to pay for the present
- 16:37is the effort necessary to do three simple things
- 16:40that I have suggested.
- 16:41Now, before you begin to take the three steps
- 16:44I have suggested, there is one important fact
- 16:47I wish to you do remember and it is this,
- 16:50control your mental attitude and make yourself friendly
- 16:53and agreeable with everyone
- 16:54with whom you are closely associated
- 16:57if you expect friendly cooperation in return.
- 17:01Indifference cannot create a master mind alliance for you.
- 17:04A negative mental attitude can bring
- 17:06you nothing but failure.
- 17:08Remember always, you are where you are and what you are
- 17:12because of your mental attitude
- 17:14in which you relate yourself to other people.
- 17:17Remember also, your mental attitude is the one
- 17:21and the only thing over which you have complete control.
- 17:25Success is something which has to be planned
- 17:28and success is something which has to be earned in advance.
- 17:32True, there is such a thing as luck, but just remember
- 17:35that luck is something you can create for yourself
- 17:38if you know the rules and follow them just
- 17:40as I give them to you.
- 17:42Remember too that success in the higher brackets
- 17:45of achievement is something that can be had only
- 17:48by taking others along with you.
- 17:50And the best definition of success which I know is this,
- 17:54success is the knowledge with which to get whatever you want
- 17:57from life without violating the rights of others
- 18:00and by helping others to acquire it.
- 18:04There is a known formula for the attainment of success
- 18:07and it is as definite and certain as are the rules
- 18:10of mathematics or the principles of science.
- 18:13My purpose in these visits is to bring you that formula
- 18:16in simpler terms that you can understand and apply
- 18:19but I can never give you that for which you are not ready.
- 18:24If you are ready to advance
- 18:26into the higher brackets of success
- 18:29you will recognize this fact by your willingness
- 18:31to follow the simple instructions
- 18:33I shall give you as we go along.
- 18:35This thing called success is a very profound
- 18:38and interesting thing because the line of demarcation
- 18:41between success and failure is so slight
- 18:44that it is often hard to tell
- 18:45where I one ends and the other begins.
- 18:48For example, in my association with the late Henry Ford,
- 18:51I recognized that he had thousands of people working for him
- 18:55who had much more education than he,
- 18:58more magnetic personalities, more ability to make friends
- 19:01and a much better chance of succeeding than Mr. Ford had
- 19:05when he was working for wages.
- 19:07But Mr. Ford had one simple quality
- 19:09the others who worked for him did not possess.
- 19:12The same quality I will clearly describe for you
- 19:14in my future visits with you.
- 19:16Meanwhile, I would be interested in knowing
- 19:18if you can describe this one simple quality
- 19:21Henry Ford possessed, which made him
- 19:23the greatest industrialist this nation has ever produced.
- 19:26In my next visit, I will give you a definite clue
- 19:29as to the success quality, which helped Henry Ford spread
- 19:32his influence throughout the world
- 19:34and to make himself richer than Chris's
- 19:37despite the fact that he had only
- 19:39a meager common school education.
- 19:41Until then, please be of good cheer, will you?
- 19:45And just remember, that's your only real limitation
- 19:50is the one you accept and the set up in your own mind.
- 19:57Well, this brings us to the success principle
- 19:59which has marked the turning point of every person
- 20:02who has promoted himself or herself
- 20:05from the lower brackets of success
- 20:07to the higher planes of achievement,
- 20:09where one acquires everything he desires.
- 20:11This principle is called the habit of going the extra mile
- 20:15which means the habit of rendering more service
- 20:17and better service than one is expected to render
- 20:20and doing it in a positive mental attitude.
- 20:23I'm going to tell you all I know
- 20:25about this magic principle of self advancement
- 20:28because it is the one rule you must follow
- 20:32if you expect to write your own price tag
- 20:35and be sure of getting it.
- 20:37Let me describe this success principle for you
- 20:40in a brief formula, which you can easily remember.
- 20:44I call it the QQMA formula
- 20:47which means the quality of service you render,
- 20:50plus the quantity of service you render
- 20:52plus the mental attitude in which you render service
- 20:55determines the space you occupy in your chosen calling
- 20:58and the compensation you'll get from your services.
- 21:02If you wanna examine carefully the people whom you know
- 21:05to be unusually successful,
- 21:08you will discover that they follow the QQMA formula
- 21:11although they may do so unconsciously.
- 21:13Now, I wish to give you a big advantage
- 21:16over those who follow this formula unconsciously.
- 21:19I wish to show you how to make use
- 21:21of it deliberately with purpose of forethought.
- 21:24So you may make the principle pay
- 21:25off in a big way and do it quickly.
- 21:28Now, I should tell you some of the benefits
- 21:31you will enjoy it by following the habit
- 21:33of going the extra mile.
- 21:34One, this habit will bring you to this favorable attention
- 21:38of those who can and will provide you with opportunities
- 21:41to promote yourself into a better circumstance.
- 21:45Two, it will place back of you that great natural law
- 21:49of increasing returns through which the service you render
- 21:51will bring back greater than average compensations.
- 21:55And three, following this habit will make you indispensable
- 21:59in your chosen occupation or calling therefore,
- 22:02it will place you in a position to write your own ticket.
- 22:05And four, this habit will help you to excel
- 22:09in your line of work because each time you render service
- 22:13you endeavor to do a better job than you did previously.
- 22:16And five, if you work for or a salary or wages
- 22:20this habit will give you preference when work is slack
- 22:22and others are laid off.
- 22:25And six, it will help you to benefit by the law of contrast
- 22:29because the others around you will not be going
- 22:31the first mile let alone the second mile.
- 22:34And seven, following this habit of doing your very best
- 22:38in all of your efforts and doing it
- 22:40in a pleasing mental attitude will improve your personality
- 22:44and make you like my others and eight,
- 22:48it will so help you to develop a keen or alert imagination
- 22:52because you will be continuously seeking new
- 22:54and better ways of rendering useful service.
- 22:57Nine, it will inspire you to move
- 23:00on your own personal initiative instead
- 23:02of waiting to be told what to do.
- 23:04A habit which is the first step
- 23:07in leadership in all callings.
- 23:09The habit of going the extra mile definitely develops
- 23:12a greater self-reliance and gives one more courage
- 23:15to move ahead without the fear of criticism from others.
- 23:18And here is one thing it does
- 23:21which if it benefited you in no other way
- 23:23but justify you in adopting it.
- 23:26It helps you to master
- 23:27the destructive habit of procrastination.
- 23:30The one habit which heads the list of causes of failure.
- 23:3412, going the extra mile influences other people
- 23:38to respect your integrity and inspire them to go out
- 23:41of their way to cooperate with you in a friendly spirit.
- 23:44And 13, the habit helps you to develop definiteness
- 23:48of purpose which is the starting point
- 23:50of all personal success.
- 23:52And it stops you from drifting through life
- 23:54without knowing what you want or where you are going.
- 23:57And number 14, and here is the grand payoff
- 24:01which this habit gives you.
- 24:03It provides you with the one and only excuse for asking
- 24:06for a promotion to a better station in life or a higher pay.
- 24:10Obviously, if you are doing no more
- 24:12than you are being paid for, then you are receiving pay
- 24:16for all to which you are entitled
- 24:18and you have not a single excuse
- 24:20for asking for more pay or a better position.
- 24:23You understand this point
- 24:24and appreciate its significance, do you not?
- 24:2915, last but not least, the habit of going
- 24:32the extra mile conditions your mind to maintain
- 24:35a master mind alliance with others.
- 24:37Ever so often, I hear people complain
- 24:39about they're not receiving favorable breaks
- 24:42in their relations with others.
- 24:43I never hear this sort of complaint from one of my students
- 24:46of the science of success, nor from anyone who
- 24:49has ever read any book that I have written
- 24:51because all of my students have learned the secret
- 24:54of how to create their own favorable breaks.
- 24:57They do it by following the habit of going the extra mile.
- 25:01I can tell you frankly,
- 25:02I have never received a major favorable break
- 25:04during my entire life that did not come
- 25:07from having applied the principle of going the extra mile.
- 25:11Sometimes I hear people complain also
- 25:13that their positions are such
- 25:14that they are not permitted to go the extra mile.
- 25:17And to my counsel to these people is always the same,
- 25:21change positions and to market your services
- 25:23where it pays to go the extra mile.
- 25:26I am sincere in giving this advice because I know
- 25:29that no one can do better than earn a mere living
- 25:33unless and until he begins going the extra mile.
- 25:37During my business career, I suppose I have employed
- 25:40but at one time or another, at least a score
- 25:42of private secretaries, all of whom followed the habit
- 25:46of going the extra mile, but I have never been able to keep
- 25:49but one of those secretaries for more than a year,
- 25:52because invariably they promoted themselves
- 25:54into better paying jobs elsewhere
- 25:57and they did so with my full blessings.
- 26:00The one exception is my present chief secretary
- 26:02who has been with me for over 10 years.
- 26:06I married her to make sure I wouldn't lose her
- 26:09of course, there were other considerations too.
- 26:12The reason I know definitely that the habit
- 26:14of going the extra mile is a sound procedure is the fact
- 26:17that I have checked this principle as I did all
- 26:20of the other 16 success principles to make sure
- 26:23they were in harmony with natural laws.
- 26:26I can give you a fine example
- 26:28of how nature forces man to go the extra mile
- 26:31in order that he may produce the food with which to exist.
- 26:34The farmer, for example, must follow the habit
- 26:37of clearing the ground, fencing it, plowing it
- 26:40and planting the seed at the right season of the year.
- 26:43All of which he must do in advance
- 26:45without compensation of any kind.
- 26:47If he does his part of the work properly
- 26:50he then hands the job over to nature, sits down
- 26:53and waits for her to do her part and within a brief period,
- 26:57nature, germinates the seed the farmer plants,
- 27:00matures it and yields back to him the seed he planted,
- 27:04plus perhaps an increase of a hundred times that amount
- 27:08to compensate him for having gone the extra mile.
- 27:11Thus, we see that the law of increasing returns comes
- 27:15to the aid of the man who goes the extra mile.
- 27:18And this principle applies the same in rendering service
- 27:22in a job as it does in the views of a farmer.
- 27:26If the farmer did not follow the habit
- 27:28of going the extra mile,
- 27:30the human race would starve to death in one season.
- 27:33And I am sure you will agree that any time
- 27:35we can copy mother nature's habits
- 27:38we will not go wrong in doing so.
- 27:41You'll now have a possession
- 27:43of the third principle of personal achievement
- 27:45which brings you three steps near the secret
- 27:48by which you may take possession
- 27:49of the master key to success.
- 27:52In order that you may test the magic power
- 27:54of this third principle, I'm going to offer you
- 27:57a suggestion which may bring you such overwhelming success
- 28:01that you will not need to attend further visits with me.
- 28:05My suggestion is this, first, start tomorrow
- 28:08in whatever occupation you are engaged to render some form
- 28:12of useful service to someone near you
- 28:14which you are not expected to render
- 28:16and for which you neither expect nor ask for compensation.
- 28:20And two, render this service in a pleasing mental attitude
- 28:24which will show clearly that you enjoy doing it.
- 28:27And three, follow this practice seven days in succession
- 28:31and then notice what a changed atmosphere you will enjoy
- 28:34in your association with those nearest you.
- 28:37In carrying out these instructions,
- 28:39do not make known your plan to anyone,
- 28:42but go ahead and do it in the most natural way possible.
- 28:45By the end of the seventh day, you will find yourself
- 28:48so much happier and so much better liked
- 28:50by those around you that you will never desire
- 28:53to give up the habit.
- 28:55Then you will be within easy reach
- 28:57of the supreme secret of success,
- 28:59which comes with the master key to success.
- 29:02In my fourth visit with you,
- 29:04I will give you a very definite clue as to the means
- 29:07by which you may appropriate and use the great master key.
- 29:10And in this same clue, I will introduce you to the source
- 29:13of a form of power which does not recognize
- 29:15the word impossible and helps you
- 29:17to transmute all failures and defeats and all adversities
- 29:22into assets of great benefit to you.
- 29:25And now until our next visit, may I remind you that
- 29:29if you believe it, you can do it.
- 29:34We come now to the fourth success principles
- 29:37where I shall introduce you to your greatest asset
- 29:40and where this introduction,
- 29:41the master key to success will be within your easy reach.
- 29:46I say this is your greatest asset with which you may tap
- 29:49and draw upon the supreme power which created you
- 29:53and runs this entire universe.
- 29:56The name of this principle is applied faith
- 30:00and I want you to remember it
- 30:01as not something I am bringing to you,
- 30:04but it is something you already possess
- 30:07although you may not have made use of it in the past.
- 30:10Now, let me tell you what applied faith is
- 30:13and what you can do with it.
- 30:15Applied faith is the mental attitude where in it
- 30:18you may clear your mind of all fears and doubts
- 30:21and direct it to the attainment of
- 30:23whatever you desire in life.
- 30:25In our first visit, I told them and do that you and I,
- 30:29and every person we're blessed with the privilege
- 30:31of complete control over but one thing,
- 30:34and that is the exclusive right to take possession
- 30:37of our own minds and direct them to the attainment
- 30:40of whatever we desire in life.
- 30:42Applied faith is a mental attitude
- 30:44we must cultivate and maintain
- 30:47before we can take complete possession of our minds.
- 30:51It is the means by which we may break
- 30:53the seal of that envelope I mentioned in our first visit
- 30:57and take full possession of the six forms of riches we get
- 31:01in return for taking possession of our minds and using them.
- 31:05Those six riches were, as you may remember, sound health,
- 31:10peace of mind, a labor of love of your own choice,
- 31:14freedom from fear and worry, a positive mental attitude
- 31:18and material riches of your own choice and quantity.
- 31:23We are now this very moment standing
- 31:27in front of the gateway, which can be opened only
- 31:30with the great master key to success.
- 31:32And I'm giving you the closest clue I have yet to mention
- 31:36as to how you may take possession of this key.
- 31:39In order that you make condition your mind
- 31:41to embrace and use applied faith,
- 31:43you must understand that there are two ways
- 31:46in which you can use faith.
- 31:48You can put it into reverse gear and use it
- 31:51in a negative way by allowing your mind as well
- 31:54upon the circumstances and the things you do not want
- 31:57such as poverty, ill health, failure, defeat
- 32:01and this is precisely what the majority of people do
- 32:05which explains why the majority
- 32:06of people go through life in misery and want.
- 32:10Or, you can take possession of your mind
- 32:13and direct it to think of the six riches
- 32:15which came over with you in that sealed envelope.
- 32:19And you will attract these riches to bless
- 32:21and serve you all through your life.
- 32:24Isn't it a strange fact that most people make
- 32:27a negative application of their great power of faith
- 32:30by thinking about and believing in poverty, ill health,
- 32:34fear, failure and defeat when it would be so easy
- 32:37for them just to change their thinking
- 32:39over to these circumstances and things they desire.
- 32:43Now, let me give you a description
- 32:45of the one thing which represents the main difference
- 32:48between a successful person and a failure.
- 32:51Please listen carefully and think for yourself as I speak
- 32:54because failure to recognize the truth I am about
- 32:57to give you is the starting point of most failures.
- 33:01Successful people in all occupations,
- 33:04all professions and all callings have one trait
- 33:07which distinguishes them from the failures.
- 33:10It is their capacity for belief.
- 33:12The failures sees a hole in the donut
- 33:15but do not see the donut around the hole.
- 33:19The successes see the hole also,
- 33:21but they see the donut around the hole.
- 33:24Thomas A. Edison believed
- 33:25that he could perfect an incandescent electric lamp
- 33:28and despite the fact that he failed over 10,000 times
- 33:32before he was crowned with success,
- 33:35he made his belief uncover the secret
- 33:37for which he was searching.
- 33:39I'll give one guess as to how many times
- 33:41the average person must fail before he quits.
- 33:44Fails because of the lack of capacity for belief.
- 33:48How many times can you meet with defeat
- 33:51before you give up the goals and quit.
- 33:54Henry Ford believed he could build a self propelled vehicle
- 33:57which would take the place of the horse and buggy.
- 34:00And despite the ridicule of relatives
- 34:03and neighbors and the lack of finances,
- 34:06he transmitted his belief into an industrial empire
- 34:10which changed the entire American way of life.
- 34:13Mind you, Ford did this with very little education
- 34:16and no operating capital to begin with.
- 34:19Right here, let me ask you a question which
- 34:21may well change your entire life.
- 34:24You perhaps have an idea or a plan
- 34:27which would be useful to other people
- 34:29but you have done nothing about it
- 34:31because you lack the self-confidence to give you a start.
- 34:35In other words, you are now where Henry Ford was
- 34:39before he built the first model
- 34:40of he is world famous automobile.
- 34:43Mr. Ford broke through that wall of fear
- 34:46which may now be holding you back and put his idea
- 34:50into operation by making use of the master mind principle
- 34:53I mentioned in our second visit
- 34:57through an alliance with his wife.
- 34:59Now, the question I wish to ask you is this,
- 35:02why don't you form a master mind alliance
- 35:04with someone and begin putting your ideas to them for you.
- 35:09Believe is truly a magic word
- 35:12because it is the beginning of all successes.
- 35:14It is the very foundation of civilization.
- 35:17It is the one quality you must develop
- 35:19before you can make use of the great master key to success.
- 35:23To be successful, you must become a person
- 35:26with a great capacity for our beliefs
- 35:28and the place to start believing is with yourself.
- 35:32You should begin by recognizing that you were born
- 35:35with the privilege of control over your own mind.
- 35:40You should also recognize that by the application
- 35:43of the master key to success,
- 35:46which I am passing on to you through these visits
- 35:49you can take full possession of your mind
- 35:51and make it yield you whatever you demand in life.
- 35:56Observe I use the word demand, not beg.
- 36:00The creator never intended for you to beg for anything.
- 36:04If he had, he would not have blessed you
- 36:06with full control over your own mind.
- 36:09If your life is not what you want it to be,
- 36:12you can change it.
- 36:14As a matter of fact, you can do anything within reason
- 36:18that you desire to do if you embrace
- 36:20the principle of applied faith
- 36:22and keep it directed to the attainment of the things
- 36:25you want and all the things you do not want.
- 36:30I should know what I'm talking about
- 36:32because I was handicapped at birth by the four horsemen
- 36:37which keep most people in bondage
- 36:39all the days of their lives, poverty, fear,
- 36:43illiteracy and a superstition.
- 36:45Theoretically, I had not the slightest foundation for hope
- 36:50that I could ever escape the influences
- 36:52of these four curses, but I did escape
- 36:56and now I am devoting my entire life
- 36:58to helping other people to gain deliverance
- 37:00from these four basic enemies of mankind.
- 37:04I have discovered the master key
- 37:06which gives one deliverance from all the evils
- 37:09one does not want and opens wide the gateway to the riches
- 37:13which the creator intended every person
- 37:16to enjoy on this earth.
- 37:18Applied faith is the only means by which the master key
- 37:22can be appropriated and used, therefore,
- 37:25I give you these instructions through which you may create
- 37:28a mental attitude which is favorable
- 37:31for all the expressions of faith.
- 37:33One, know what you want and believe
- 37:37that you can and will get it.
- 37:39Two, give expressions of gratitude many at times daily
- 37:44for having received that what you want
- 37:46even before you actually get physical possession of.
- 37:50Possession starts first in the mind
- 37:53but please remember this.
- 37:55Third, keep your mind open for hunches from within.
- 37:59And when you are inspired to action, do not wait
- 38:02but move on your own personal initiative at once.
- 38:06Remember, there can be no application
- 38:09of applied faith without action.
- 38:12Fourth, when overtaken by defeat as you may be many times,
- 38:17remember that man's faith is tested many times
- 38:20before he is crowned with final victory
- 38:23and accept your defeat as nothing more than
- 38:26a challenge to keep on trying.
- 38:29And five, a burning desire for the things
- 38:32or circumstances you want is the starting point
- 38:35of all applied faith.
- 38:37Be definite, believe and act and keep on acting
- 38:44if at first you meet with a defeat.
- 38:46Six, when doubt creeps into your mind
- 38:50remember that whatsoever a man believeths
- 38:54that shall he also reap.
- 38:57Remember, faith is not something you get
- 39:00faith is something you already have,
- 39:03but you may be using it in reverse gear
- 39:05by believing in the circumstances
- 39:08and things you do not want, the things you fear.
- 39:12Remember also that faith is guidance only
- 39:16it is not a power which will bring you what you want
- 39:20but a power that can guide you to go
- 39:22after what you want and get it.
- 39:25Remember too, that your faith is limited only
- 39:29by your own capacity to believe.
- 39:32You can do whatever you make up your mind to do.
- 39:35I believed that I could give the world
- 39:37a practical philosophy of success which would free men
- 39:40and women from their fears and limitations.
- 39:43I stood firmly back of that belief through 20 odd years
- 39:47of effort and this all my beliefs give freedom
- 39:50to millions of people.
- 39:52Do the things that and you shall have the power.
- 39:57May I paraphrase this great truth
- 39:59by saying believe and you shall receive.
- 40:05And now until our next two visit, will you please remember
- 40:09that your life is exactly what you make it
- 40:12by your own mental attitude.
- 40:16For our fifth visit, our subject is a pleasing personality.
- 40:21Your personality determines whether people
- 40:24are attracted to you or shy away from you.
- 40:27It is the show window in which you display your character
- 40:30to the world and it is the one thing which distinguishes you
- 40:33from all other human beings.
- 40:36It is your trademark by which people recognize you.
- 40:39And it is the thing which determines your success
- 40:42or failure in selling yourself through life.
- 40:45Therefore, you should see your personality
- 40:46just as others see it.
- 40:48So you may improve it to where it needs improvement.
- 40:52Your personality consists of more than 30 different factors,
- 40:55traits and characteristics.
- 40:59Because of the limit of time
- 41:00I can devote to this visit with you,
- 41:02I can mention all of the more important
- 41:04of your traits of personality,
- 41:06but before I begin to describe these traits,
- 41:09I want you to know that every trait which goes
- 41:12into your personality is under your control
- 41:16and you can improve it so it will be
- 41:18whatever you want it to be.
- 41:21Let us start with the most important trait
- 41:23of your personality, your mental attitude.
- 41:27This is a trait with which you attract people to you
- 41:30and cause them to like you are repel them
- 41:33and cause them to dislike you.
- 41:34Your mental attitude must be positive
- 41:36if you attract people to you.
- 41:39How do other people know whether your mental attitude
- 41:42is positive or negative you may ask.
- 41:44Well, the answer is easy.
- 41:47First of all, other people tune in
- 41:48and pick up your mental attitude by telepathy
- 41:51without your saying a word or making a move.
- 41:55But there are other ways they can tell
- 41:57whether your mental attitude is negative or positive.
- 42:00You disclose this information by the tone of your voice
- 42:03whether it is pleasant or harsh,
- 42:06by the expression on your face
- 42:08whether it is soft and pleasing or harsh and scowling,
- 42:12by the courtesy and consideration
- 42:14you show other people or the lack of these.
- 42:17So you see, there is no escape from revealing to others
- 42:21the exact nature of your personality.
- 42:25The next most important trait of your personality consists
- 42:28of your flexibility of your mental attitude
- 42:31or your lack of it.
- 42:33If you have flexibility, you adjust yourself
- 42:36to all the circumstances in your relations with others
- 42:39without losing your composure or allowing yourself
- 42:42to become irritable or angry.
- 42:44Just remember, if you have flexibility
- 42:46of your mental attitude, it will be impossible
- 42:49for anyone to make you angry
- 42:51or to irritate you without your consent or cooperation.
- 42:55Now this is worth knowing isn't it?
- 42:57You cannot control the actions of other people
- 43:00which might justify you in becoming irritated by them
- 43:03but you can control your reaction
- 43:06to all such circumstances
- 43:08by exercising your trait of flexibility.
- 43:11And you will observe that all people
- 43:13in the higher brackets of success have this flexibility
- 43:16and they do control their reaction
- 43:19to the influences of other people.
- 43:22The third most important trait of a pleasing personality
- 43:26is the ability to control and direct
- 43:29your emotion of enthusiasm.
- 43:32Enthusiasm is one of the means by which
- 43:35you can give forcefulness to your words
- 43:37but you must be able to turn it on and off at will
- 43:40as definitely, as you can turn
- 43:43on and off water at the spigot.
- 43:45Uncontrolled enthusiasm often makes people boresome.
- 43:49It also may open wide the window to one's mind
- 43:52through which other people may enter
- 43:54and influence one in ways he does not wish to be influenced.
- 43:58The fourth most important trait of a pleasing personality
- 44:01is a sincerity of purpose.
- 44:04The person who is not sincere in all relationships
- 44:06with others is soon detected and rejected
- 44:09because no one is attracted to the person
- 44:11who does endeavors to deceive others.
- 44:15Sincerity is one quality of guarantee
- 44:17which cannot be successful faked
- 44:20not even by the most astute rascal
- 44:22or the most efficient actor
- 44:25because insincere to evermore carries with it
- 44:27some warning sign which other people recognize.
- 44:32You have only to go back into your own experience
- 44:35with insincere people to prove
- 44:37the truth of what I have stated.
- 44:40There are 26 other important traits
- 44:41which give one a pleasing personality
- 44:44but I do not have time to give them to you in this visit.
- 44:48Now let us turn our attention to some of the common habits
- 44:51which destroy your pleasing personality.
- 44:54Please check yourself as I describe these negative habits
- 44:57and you may make discoveries about yourself sufficient
- 45:01to enable you to rebuild your entire personality
- 45:04so it will become a master salesman in your behalf.
- 45:08One, one of the most destructive habits
- 45:11which make one's personality objectionable
- 45:13is that of breaking in and running away
- 45:16with the conversation when others are speaking.
- 45:18And two, sarcasm expressed by insinuations and wisecracks
- 45:24which are not so wise is near the head of the list
- 45:27of habits which give one a negative personality.
- 45:31And third, vanity expressed by either words or actions
- 45:34is sure to make one unpopular.
- 45:37And four, in difference in listening
- 45:40while others are speaking is sure
- 45:42to be noticed and resented.
- 45:45It is more profitable to be a good listener
- 45:47than it is to be a good talker because one is always apt
- 45:51to learn something while listening to others
- 45:54but never learns anything from hearing himself talk.
- 45:57Five, the attempt flatter where a flattery is obviously
- 46:01not deserved will bring quick resentment from others.
- 46:05Also, it will put them on notice
- 46:07if they are wise that they flattler wants something
- 46:10he perhaps should not get.
- 46:12And six, the habit of finding fault with the world
- 46:15at large and the people in general is never a popular habit.
- 46:19And it is no part of a pleasing personality.
- 46:22It is far better to direct conversation
- 46:25through the circumstances and things which are right
- 46:29than to complain of those, which one believes to be wrong.
- 46:32And seven, one of the very worst habits
- 46:35which destroy a pleasing personality is
- 46:38that a open land directly challenging those
- 46:41with whom one may not agree where there is no obvious reason
- 46:45for doing so, except they desire to be on the opposite side.
- 46:49And eight, the habit of volunteering unsolicited advice
- 46:53to others who have not requested it
- 46:55can make one on intolerable bore.
- 46:58Free advice usually is considered to be worth just
- 47:00what it costs which is nothing but the patience
- 47:03with which to listen to it.
- 47:05And nine, the habit of speaking of one's physical ailments,
- 47:09worries and personal problems may be tolerated by others
- 47:13but this habit will never make one welcome or pleasing.
- 47:16If you wish to make yourself welcome in your relations
- 47:19with others, managed to talk about things
- 47:21which interest and concern those to whom you are speaking.
- 47:25You will never be boresome to person
- 47:27to whom you are speaking of himself
- 47:29and the things which interested him,
- 47:31a truth which all master salesman understand and respect.
- 47:35And 10, the habit of endeavoring to convey an impression
- 47:40of superiority through the use of words
- 47:42and topics unfamiliar to others is
- 47:45a surefire destroyer of popularity.
- 47:48If you wish to sell yourself to others successfully
- 47:51you must negotiate with them on their own level,
- 47:54through terms, which they understand.
- 47:56And 11, envy of those who are successful is a trait
- 48:00which destroys a pleasing personality.
- 48:03The truly great men and women have all been known
- 48:05to be generous, sympathetic and joyous
- 48:08in connection with the good fortunes of others.
- 48:11And 12, slovenliness in body posture and in clothing
- 48:15never attracts but always repels others.
- 48:18Clothes make not the man as has been said
- 48:21but they surely gave him might a good start
- 48:23if they are appropriate and properly worn.
- 48:27Carelessness in body carriage on posture
- 48:29is immediately traceable to a negative mental attitude.
- 48:32If you are free from these 12 common habits
- 48:35which make one on popular,
- 48:37you probably have a very pleasing personality.
- 48:40There are five other negative habits
- 48:42which make one unpopular
- 48:43which I have not had the time to mention.
- 48:46Remember this please, if you are not liked by other people
- 48:50you may be sure there is a reason
- 48:52which you can detect and correct.
- 48:56It is unnatural for one person
- 48:58to dislike another without a cause.
- 49:00Before you can make full use of the master key to success,
- 49:04you will need to make your personality pleasing.
- 49:07This will require courage on your part
- 49:09and honesty with yourself.
- 49:12A pleasing personality stands near the hit
- 49:14of the list of assets, which make one truly rich.
- 49:18I was impressed with this truth many years ago
- 49:21when I heard Andrew Carnegie say
- 49:23that he paid his right hand master mind ally
- 49:26Charles M. Schwab, $75,000 a year
- 49:30for the services he rendered directly.
- 49:33But he often gave Mr. Schwab the bonus at the end
- 49:36of the year of a million dollars for the influence
- 49:39he exerted on his associate workers
- 49:41because of his pleasing personality.
- 49:44You see therefore, Andrew Carnegie
- 49:47who has been said to have been the greatest judge of man
- 49:50this nation has ever known, placed a value
- 49:53on a pleasing personality, more than 10 times
- 49:55as much as he valued the personal services
- 49:58of his right hand man.
- 50:00Perhaps this will give you a clue that may help you
- 50:03up the market value of your personality.
- 50:06And now, until we meet again, may I wish you health, wealth
- 50:13and peace of mind.
- 50:17This visit brings us to the sixth principle of success
- 50:21without which the five principles
- 50:23I have given you previously would be useless.
- 50:26It is the of self discipline.
- 50:29Self discipline as I am presenting it to you here
- 50:33has reference not only to your mastery of negative habits,
- 50:37which stand in the way of your success,
- 50:39but more particularly to your development
- 50:42and enforcement of the positive habits you will need
- 50:46in order to avail yourself of the six assets you brought
- 50:50over with you in that sealed envelope
- 50:52I mentioned in our first visit.
- 50:55Now, let me give you a list of the more important things
- 50:58over which you will have to exercise self-discipline
- 51:02before you can embrace
- 51:03and use the great master key to riches.
- 51:05One, you will have to gain mastery over your tongue
- 51:09by acquiring the habit of thinking first, and then speaking
- 51:14after you are sure that's what you say will benefit you
- 51:18and not injure others.
- 51:21A lose tongue often as one's greatest liability.
- 51:24Two, you will have to exercise self discipline
- 51:27and mastering the common tendency to strike back
- 51:30at those at whom you have a cause real
- 51:32or imaginary for a grievance.
- 51:35You must remember that everything you'll do to
- 51:37or for another you do to or for yourself
- 51:41because your every thought and every act
- 51:43which benefits are injures another person comes back
- 51:47to you in kind, greatly multiplied.
- 51:51So if you feel that you must slander another person,
- 51:54do not speak it, but write it.
- 51:57Write it in the sense near the water's edge
- 52:00then move away from it until the tides have flown.
- 52:03Three, you will have to exercise self discipline
- 52:06over all of your emotions, particularly
- 52:09your emotions of love, hate, fear, and sex.
- 52:14These are the big four of your emotions,
- 52:16and they can make you or break you according
- 52:19to the extent of discipline you exercise over them.
- 52:23Four, your mental attitude need is discipline
- 52:27and control at all times.
- 52:29Lacking this discipline, it can, and it often
- 52:32does drive away friends, destroy opportunities
- 52:36to get ahead, brings on physical and mental illness,
- 52:40develops stomach ulcers and makes peace of mind impossible.
- 52:47Five, I have reserved the emotion of sex for special mention
- 52:52because the failure to exercise self-discipline
- 52:55over this emotion probably heads the list
- 52:57of all the causes of personal failure.
- 53:00The emotion of sex is the most powerful of all emotions.
- 53:05And it is nature's great creative instrument
- 53:07with which all species of living things are perpetuated.
- 53:11The proper means of self-discipline of the emotion of sex
- 53:15is transmutation, the control and direction
- 53:18of this great emotional feeling toward the attainment
- 53:21of worthy purposes such as
- 53:23the fulfillment of one's major in life.
- 53:26The great leaders, artists, writers, industrialists
- 53:31and professional people have learned the art
- 53:34of sex transmutation through the proper system
- 53:37of self-discipline because of the delicacy
- 53:40of the subject of sex emotion,
- 53:43I am limited as to the information I can give you
- 53:46about it on this visit, but I have covered the subject
- 53:49to much more in detail in some of my books.
- 53:53And six, your stomach also needs discipline
- 53:57through the proper habits of dieting and fasting
- 54:00because information on dieting and fasting
- 54:03should come from your own doctor.
- 54:06I will not go into details concerning them
- 54:08except to call your attention
- 54:10to the need for knowledge on this subject.
- 54:13Personally, I attribute my sound physical health mainly
- 54:17through the habits of dieting and fasting
- 54:19which I have developed through the years.
- 54:22And seven, you will need to exercise self-discipline
- 54:25in relation to religion and politics
- 54:28because our country, which is the most acceptable form
- 54:31of society civilization has yet produced
- 54:34is made up of people of varying beliefs in connection
- 54:38with both of these subjects.
- 54:40To be happy and prosperous in our country,
- 54:43we must learn to live and to let live
- 54:45to give others the privileges we ask
- 54:48and demand for ourselves.
- 54:50And this often calls for strict discipline over self.
- 54:55Eight, but I have reserved until the last,
- 54:58my reference to the most important circumstances over which
- 55:01you must exercise the strictest of self discipline
- 55:04if you are to embrace and use
- 55:06the great master key to riches.
- 55:08I have reference to your profound privilege
- 55:11of taking possession of your own mind and directing it
- 55:15to whatever ends you may desire.
- 55:18You cannot take possession of your own mind
- 55:20or directed to delve ends without a practical system.
- 55:25I have devoted the better portion of my past life
- 55:28to the revelation and presentation of such a system.
- 55:33And I know that this system works because it
- 55:35has been successfully used by many millions
- 55:37of people throughout the world.
- 55:40This system is not only practical and workable,
- 55:43but it is so simple that anyone who is ready for it
- 55:47may master it and use it successfully.
- 55:50It's used, does not call for a genius
- 55:52nor a great amount of formal education.
- 55:55It calls only for the will to take possession
- 55:58of one's own mind and the definite purpose
- 56:01to which the mind is to be directed.
- 56:04Self disciplined by Thomas A. Edison made him
- 56:07the world's greatest inventor who revealed
- 56:10to mankind during the first half of the 20th century
- 56:14more of nature secrets than had been uncovered
- 56:18during the entire previous history of civilization.
- 56:22Self discipline carried Wilbur and Orville Wright
- 56:25through a multitude of failures and enable them finally
- 56:29to give the world its first practical airplane,
- 56:32an achievement which has made the world smaller
- 56:35and change the entire trend of civilization.
- 56:38Self-discipline helped Helen Keller to triumph
- 56:41over deafness, blindness and dumbness.
- 56:45A combination of affliction
- 56:47such as most people never experience.
- 56:50Self-discipline helped me to carry on through years
- 56:54of heart-aching, discouragement and defeat and give
- 56:58the world the first practical philosophy of success
- 57:01based on the knowhow gained by hundreds of men and women
- 57:06who spent a lifetime by the trial and error method
- 57:09in discovery of the principles
- 57:11which lead to personal success.
- 57:14Self-discipline is among the top ranking features
- 57:17of all the great religions
- 57:19including of course, the Christian faith.
- 57:22And there are some people who believe that our major purpose
- 57:26on earth is that of developing wisdom
- 57:29through struggle and the self-discipline.
- 57:33One thing is certain, no one ever becomes very wise
- 57:36without the aid of self-discipline
- 57:39and no one ever finds peace of mind and happiness
- 57:43without the strict exercise of self-discipline.
- 57:47Self-discipline is the only means
- 57:49of transmuting sorrow into faith.
- 57:52It is the only means by which we may transmute hatred
- 57:56of others into the milder emotion of sympathy for them.
- 58:01It is the only means by which we may reveal
- 58:03and profit by the seed of an equivalent benefit
- 58:07which comes with every adversity and every defeat.
- 58:11It is the only means by which we may shut out of our minds
- 58:15the deadly effects of past experiences
- 58:18of suffering and unpleasantness.
- 58:21And it is the means by which we may discover that other self
- 58:25we carry around with us, that self,
- 58:28which has great capacity for our belief,
- 58:31and that does not become influenced by failure and defeat.
- 58:35Self-disciplined can give us freedom from the fear of death,
- 58:39the most difficult to master up all of our fears.
- 58:42It can free us from the disease of hypochondria,
- 58:46the fear of imaginary illness with which
- 58:48so many people suffer and sometimes die.
- 58:51Self-discipline is the means by which we may think
- 58:54our own thoughts, live our own lives as we wish to live them
- 58:58and remain forever free from the evils or fears
- 59:02and limitations which we have inherited from the dark ages
- 59:06before the dawn of civilization.
- 59:09The creator never gives one an asset or a benefit
- 59:13without passing along with it
- 59:15the means by which it may be embraced and used.
- 59:19Self-discipline therefore,
- 59:21is the means by which the creator provided us
- 59:23with a method of embracing and using the only thing
- 59:27over which we have unchallengeable control,
- 59:30the power of our own thoughts.
- 59:34And to now, until our next visit
- 59:35may I remind you that the habit of taking the line
- 59:39of least resistance makes all rivers and some men crooked.
- 59:47Well, this brings us to the seventh visit
- 59:51and I hope to hand you the master key to success
- 59:53before I finish, because my subject will lead to so near
- 59:57to the master key that you will be apt to recognize it.
- 1:00:01As I have suggested in previous visits,
- 1:00:04a positive mental attitude can clear away all obstacles
- 1:00:07which stand between you and your major purpose in life.
- 1:00:11Because of the importance of the subject of our visit,
- 1:00:15I shall not only tell you
- 1:00:16that a positive mental attitude heads
- 1:00:19the entire list of the 12 great riches in life
- 1:00:23but I am going to give you explicit instructions
- 1:00:26as to what you must do to keep your mind positive.
- 1:00:31In all of the success books I have written
- 1:00:34I have never suggested to my readers what they should do
- 1:00:37without clearly telling them how to do it.
- 1:00:40Are you ready?
- 1:00:41If you are already this visit may bring
- 1:00:43the most important change in your life
- 1:00:45you have ever experienced.
- 1:00:47One, learn to adjust yourself
- 1:00:49to other people's state of mind and difficulties
- 1:00:52so as to get along peacefully with them
- 1:00:55and to refrain from taking notice of trivial circumstances
- 1:00:58in your relations with other people by refusing
- 1:01:01to allow them to become controversial incidents.
- 1:01:05Great people always avoid small incidents
- 1:01:08of controversy when possible.
- 1:01:10Two, establish for yourself a definite fixed system
- 1:01:14of conditioning your mind at the beginning of each day.
- 1:01:17So you will keep it positive under all circumstances.
- 1:01:20Three, learn the art of selling yourself to other people
- 1:01:24by indirection, such as asking leading questions
- 1:01:28which will bring out the sort of reactions from others
- 1:01:31which you desire and do not permit yourself to be drawn
- 1:01:34into argument over unimportant subjects.
- 1:01:37Four, adopt the habit of having a good heart and laugh
- 1:01:41every time you become irritated or angry
- 1:01:44and it will help you if you begin each day
- 1:01:46with one minute of hardy laughing.
- 1:01:48This will change the chemistry of your brain
- 1:01:51and start you out with a positive mental attitude.
- 1:01:54However, you had better get out of sight
- 1:01:56when you would take your laughing exercise.
- 1:01:59Five, start each day with an expression of gratitude
- 1:02:03for all the adversities, defeats, failures
- 1:02:06you have experienced in the past
- 1:02:08and the search for the seed of an equivalent benefit
- 1:02:11these have yielded you through the passing of time.
- 1:02:15Then give thanks for the blessings you expect
- 1:02:17to receive during the day.
- 1:02:19Six, learn to concentrate your attention
- 1:02:22on the can-do portion of all of your problems and desires
- 1:02:26and start action where you stand
- 1:02:28in carrying out this portion.
- 1:02:31No matter what may be your problem or your desire
- 1:02:34there is always something you can do right now
- 1:02:37that will help you.
- 1:02:39Find out what this something is and do it.
- 1:02:42Seven, learn to transmute all unpleasant circumstances
- 1:02:46into immediate action which calls for
- 1:02:48a positive mental attitude and make this a fixed habit.
- 1:02:53For example, when you are angry, switch your mind
- 1:02:55to some sort of action in connection with your hobby
- 1:02:58or your major purpose in life.
- 1:03:00And keep it busy with that subject for five minutes.
- 1:03:04Eight, recognize that every circumstance
- 1:03:07which influences your life,
- 1:03:09whether it is a pleasant or unpleasant circumstance
- 1:03:12is grist for your mill of life.
- 1:03:14And if so use it to make it to make it pay you dividends
- 1:03:17in one form or another remembering meanwhile
- 1:03:21that's your strength draws out of your struggles.
- 1:03:24Follow this instruction, as you will soon learn
- 1:03:26that there is no such thing as an unprofitable experience.
- 1:03:30Nine, look upon your life
- 1:03:32as a continuous process of education
- 1:03:35of learning from all your experiences, good and bad.
- 1:03:39And to be always on the alert for gains of wisdom
- 1:03:42which come to you a little at a time
- 1:03:44in both your pleasant and unpleasant experiences.
- 1:03:4710, make the world over to fit your own pattern
- 1:03:51if you choose, but begin with yourself
- 1:03:54in some sort of self-improvement
- 1:03:56which will make you more open-minded and patient
- 1:03:59and generous in your relations with others.
- 1:04:0211, express gratitude twice daily for your recognition
- 1:04:07of the fact that you have been given complete control
- 1:04:10over your own mind and ask for guidance in order that
- 1:04:14you may use this profound gift wisely
- 1:04:17in all your thoughts and acts.
- 1:04:1912, go out of your way daily to comment enthusiastically
- 1:04:24on the good qualities of those with whom you live and work
- 1:04:27but do not mention their negative qualities,
- 1:04:30then, observe those benefit to yourself how quickly others
- 1:04:34will begin to concentrate on your good qualities.
- 1:04:37Remember, I'm still talking about
- 1:04:40how to keep your mind positive.
- 1:04:42And 13, accept all criticism of yourself as an occasion
- 1:04:47for self examination, to determine how much
- 1:04:50of it is justified and you will be sure
- 1:04:52to mix startling discoveries about yourself,
- 1:04:55which will help you to the remainder of your life.
- 1:04:5914, do not except from life or anyone else
- 1:05:02anything you do not desire.
- 1:05:05And remember that Mahatma Gandhi proved himself
- 1:05:08to be more powerful than the great British military forces
- 1:05:12by this a simple method of passive resistance.
- 1:05:1515, remember always that there are two kinds
- 1:05:18of circumstances which cause you to worry,
- 1:05:22those you can do something about
- 1:05:24and those you can do nothing about.
- 1:05:26Nothing that is except to use passive resistance
- 1:05:30and refuse to permit them to worry you.
- 1:05:3316, keep your mind eternally engaged in thinking of that
- 1:05:37which you desire most, your major purpose in life.
- 1:05:41So no time will be left for you to waste
- 1:05:43on thinking of that which you do not want.
- 1:05:46And let me digress your, while I tell you
- 1:05:49we are not rubbing elbows
- 1:05:51with the great master key of success this very moment.
- 1:05:55And 17, if you should ever be so unfortunate
- 1:05:59as to feel sorry for yourself,
- 1:06:01look around until you find someone
- 1:06:03who is worse off than yourself
- 1:06:05and start where you stand to give him help.
- 1:06:08Make this procedure a habit and you have witnessed one
- 1:06:12of the great miracles of life because that
- 1:06:14which you do two are for another you do to or for yourself.
- 1:06:20And 18, choose some person whom you consider to be
- 1:06:25the sort of person you would like to be.
- 1:06:27Then go to work and emulate that person
- 1:06:29in every way possible.
- 1:06:32Great people have always been hero worshipers
- 1:06:36but they picked the right sort of people to emulate.
- 1:06:4119, cultivate your tone of voice so that your words
- 1:06:44have a pleasing musical sound.
- 1:06:47And remember that the sound of your voice is an open window
- 1:06:51through which other people look into your very soul.
- 1:06:54It will be a profitable investment if you will get
- 1:06:57a tape recording machine and record samples
- 1:06:59of your voice daily while you practice the art
- 1:07:03of expressing yourself through a friendly sounding voice.
- 1:07:07If you are engaged in selling this practice will quickly
- 1:07:10be off in monetary dividends.
- 1:07:1220, last but by no means the least, write out this sentence
- 1:07:17and paste it in a prominent place where you work
- 1:07:20and on a mirror where you see yourself in your home.
- 1:07:24Whatever the mind can conceive and believe,
- 1:07:28the mind can achieve.
- 1:07:31The 20 instructions I have just given you I've come
- 1:07:34from my own personal experiences over more than 40 years.
- 1:07:38And they represent also, my observations are more
- 1:07:41than 500 successful people who helped me to organize
- 1:07:45the science of success philosophy.
- 1:07:47I claim no copyright on these great truths and I want you
- 1:07:51to possess them because I know they can bless you
- 1:07:53the remainder of your life if you are ready to accept them
- 1:07:57and put them into action.
- 1:07:59Remember also that you are the only person who
- 1:08:02can provide you with a positive mental attitude.
- 1:08:06What are you going to do about it?
- 1:08:08On your answer to this question, rest your entire future.
- 1:08:15Our eighth visit brings us to the subject of enthusiasm
- 1:08:20which may be liken to steam in a boiler
- 1:08:22which one it is controlled and turned on starts
- 1:08:26the wheels of machinery into action.
- 1:08:28Someone has said that knowledge is power.
- 1:08:32That is only a half-truth, for knowledge becomes power
- 1:08:35only when it is put into action for the attainment
- 1:08:38of a definite objective.
- 1:08:40Enthusiasm is one of the more powerful means
- 1:08:43by which we may put into action
- 1:08:45our education, experience and knowledge.
- 1:08:49Spoken words without enthusiasm are often ineffective
- 1:08:52and sometimes they can be actually boresome.
- 1:08:54As you of course know, if you have noticed the effect
- 1:08:57a speaker without enthusiasm has on his listeners.
- 1:09:01I have known lecturers to hold audiences spellbound
- 1:09:04for two hours yet when members of the audience were asked
- 1:09:07to the speaker had said they could not remember,
- 1:09:11but what they did remember was that
- 1:09:13the speaker got their attention and held it.
- 1:09:15And now let me explain why enthusiasm has
- 1:09:18such a powerful impact upon the minds
- 1:09:20of those who come under its influence.
- 1:09:23To begin with, I believe you'll will be interested
- 1:09:25in knowing that your brain and every other person's brain
- 1:09:29is both a broadcasting station and the receiving station
- 1:09:32which sends out thought vibrations
- 1:09:34and picks up those sent out by other people.
- 1:09:38When you turn on your enthusiasm, you step up the vibrations
- 1:09:42of thoughts which go out from your brain
- 1:09:44so that they reach out and affect other people more quickly.
- 1:09:47As a matter of fact, you can send out thoughts
- 1:09:49which have been so stepped up with silent enthusiasm,
- 1:09:53that they will reach out and influence other people
- 1:09:55to whom you direct your thoughts.
- 1:09:57This is a fact which has been known
- 1:09:58to psychologists for ages, and it is also known
- 1:10:01to most master salesman who used this method to condition
- 1:10:05the minds of their prospects and buyers
- 1:10:07before they ever talk with them.
- 1:10:09You must have observed that the enthusiasm
- 1:10:11is very contagious.
- 1:10:14That it engages the attention of those who come
- 1:10:16under its influence and that causes them
- 1:10:18to respond in a similar spirit of enthusiasm.
- 1:10:22I once heard Andrew Carnegie say that
- 1:10:24if you turn loose one man who thought
- 1:10:26in terms of intense enthusiasm in an industrial plant
- 1:10:30employing thousands of people,
- 1:10:32this man's enthusiasm would very quickly reach
- 1:10:34and influence every person in the plant.
- 1:10:37And he said that it made not the slightest difference
- 1:10:40whether the enthusiasm was negative or positive,
- 1:10:43constructive or destructive.
- 1:10:45Then Mr. Carnegie went on to explain that in his selection
- 1:10:49of employees for promotion to bigger jobs
- 1:10:52the first thing he looked for was a man's capacity
- 1:10:54to express himself in terms of intense enthusiasm.
- 1:10:58He said that enthusiasm is one
- 1:11:00of the most important traits necessary for leadership.
- 1:11:03The most successful lawyers are not necessarily
- 1:11:06those who know most about the legal profession
- 1:11:09but they are those who know how to influence courts
- 1:11:11and juries with their belief in their cases
- 1:11:14and have a great capacity
- 1:11:15for expressing themselves with enthusiasm.
- 1:11:19When you are introduced to another person
- 1:11:21you have a marvelous opportunity
- 1:11:22to sell yourself favorably to that person.
- 1:11:25By the extent of the enthusiasm you express
- 1:11:28in accepting the introduction.
- 1:11:30When you shake hands with another person
- 1:11:32you have also a fine opportunity
- 1:11:34to make a favorable impression by the warmth of enthusiasm
- 1:11:37you put into that handshake.
- 1:11:39If there is anything which leaves me flattened
- 1:11:42and unfavorably impressed when I'm introduced
- 1:11:45it's an extended hand which feels like a piece
- 1:11:47of cold ham and that acknowledges the introduction
- 1:11:50with a cold canned, pleased to meet you
- 1:11:53with no signs of enthusiasm back of it.
- 1:11:56Right here let me give you a brief course in salesmanship
- 1:11:59which may be a value to you the remainder of your life.
- 1:12:03When you meet anyone on whom you wish
- 1:12:05to make a favorable impression
- 1:12:07when it is you have not previously met or someone
- 1:12:10with whom you are already acquainted, do these things.
- 1:12:14One, turn on your enthusiasm and so modulate your voice
- 1:12:18with it that you definitely me make the other person feel
- 1:12:21you are happy to communicate with him.
- 1:12:23Two, when you shake his hand, take a firm grip on it
- 1:12:27and give it a quick firm squeeze
- 1:12:29at the end of each word you express in your greetings.
- 1:12:32For example, say, how do you do?
- 1:12:36I am so very glad to meet you.
- 1:12:39Do not gross the hand however,
- 1:12:41as I have known some people to do.
- 1:12:44Three, then if you begin and the conversation
- 1:12:47be sure that you direct it to some subject
- 1:12:49of interest to the other person.
- 1:12:51And four, follow through by eagerly asking questions
- 1:12:55which will keep attention focused upon the other person.
- 1:12:58Then when you are ready to have the other person hear
- 1:13:01what you have to say about yourself or your interests
- 1:13:04or your business, he will have been prepared
- 1:13:06to listen attentively.
- 1:13:08For many years, I taught master salesmanship.
- 1:13:11And the first important thing I endeavored
- 1:13:13to teach my students was the importance of a one,
- 1:13:16speaking with enthusiasm and two,
- 1:13:20selling the prospective buyer himself
- 1:13:23before trying to sell him anything else.
- 1:13:26I have often told my students of salesmanship
- 1:13:28that the best possible way for one to sell himself to others
- 1:13:32is to first sell the others to themselves.
- 1:13:35That counsel was sound when I began training salesman
- 1:13:38over 30 years ago and it is still sound.
- 1:13:42When I was a youngster in school I discovered that
- 1:13:45the teachers from whom I learned the most
- 1:13:47were those who expressed the greatest enthusiasm
- 1:13:49in their teaching.
- 1:13:51And I have heard an experienced doctor say
- 1:13:53that the enthusiasm he carries into the sick room with him
- 1:13:57has more to do with helping to bring about a cure
- 1:13:59than all the medicine he can prescribe.
- 1:14:02And now, let me give you another interesting sidelight
- 1:14:05on the effects of enthusiasm.
- 1:14:07I have noticed that enthusiasm not only influences others
- 1:14:11who come under its effect
- 1:14:12but it also very distinctly influences
- 1:14:15and it benefits those who follow the habit
- 1:14:17of expressing it in their thoughts and deeds.
- 1:14:21Enthusiasm is an expression of a positive mental attitude
- 1:14:24and it has long been known to doctors
- 1:14:27that a positive mental attitude stands high
- 1:14:30on the list of influences which give one sound health.
- 1:14:34I have heard it said, for example,
- 1:14:36that only one thing causes stomach ulcers
- 1:14:39and that is worry or a negative mental attitude.
- 1:14:42And only one thing can cure stomach ulcers
- 1:14:46and that is a positive mental attitude.
- 1:14:48It seems that disease germs cannot live and thrive
- 1:14:51in the bloodstream of one whose mind is always positive.
- 1:14:56I have still another very important observation concerning
- 1:15:00the power of enthusiasm which I wish to give you.
- 1:15:03I have observed that prayer is expressed
- 1:15:06with intense enthusiasm bringing
- 1:15:09much quicker and more satisfactory results.
- 1:15:12Now, you can try this for yourself and be convinced.
- 1:15:15I began experimenting with this idea many years ago,
- 1:15:19and from my experiences, I gathered the information
- 1:15:22which caused me to change my method up prior entirely.
- 1:15:26I now use the prayer I recommended to you on previous visits
- 1:15:31with the gratifying results that I get quicker
- 1:15:34and more favorable action from my priors than I did
- 1:15:36when I express them in a spirit which lacked enthusiasm.
- 1:15:41I suggest that a very practical way to begin learning
- 1:15:44to express yourself with enthusiasm will be
- 1:15:46the father of the habit of reading a lot
- 1:15:49for 10 minutes daily, putting all the enthusiasm
- 1:15:53at your command into your reading.
- 1:15:56You will be surprised in a short while
- 1:15:58at how much this will help you in speaking with enthusiasm
- 1:16:02in your ordinary conversations.
- 1:16:04I would suggest also that you adopt the habit
- 1:16:07of practicing enthusiasm in your conversations
- 1:16:10with your family on your business associates.
- 1:16:13Incidentally, this habit will make you more popular
- 1:16:15with those who are close to you.
- 1:16:17You can enjoy the benefits of enthusiasm
- 1:16:20if you are interested enough to develop a technique
- 1:16:23by which do acquire this habit.
- 1:16:25So you will follow it in a natural unaffected tone of voice.
- 1:16:29If you follow my suggestion that you read
- 1:16:32for 10 minutes daily as a means of acquiring
- 1:16:35the habit of enthusiasm,
- 1:16:37I recommend that you write down a list of 10 subjects,
- 1:16:40things or circumstances in which you have
- 1:16:42the keenest interests and use this list
- 1:16:45for your practice purposes.
- 1:16:47You will have no difficulty in reading
- 1:16:49in a tone of enthusiasm in connection
- 1:16:52with the things that you like best.
- 1:16:54And finally, if you have it not already picked up
- 1:16:57some useful ideas as to how the habit of enthusiasm
- 1:17:01can be developed or what causes one to be enthusiastic,
- 1:17:05let me give you an example of which may provide you
- 1:17:07with an interesting cue.
- 1:17:09You'll perhaps remember when you were courting the person
- 1:17:12of your choice or being courted as the case may be
- 1:17:16you need to know what to tell you how
- 1:17:18or why to be enthusiastic.
- 1:17:20Of course not because the motive of love or affection
- 1:17:24to care of this without effort on your part.
- 1:17:27Just remember that enthusiasm is always easily expressed
- 1:17:31when one is inspired by a burning desire for something
- 1:17:34or an emotive associated with one's closest interests.
- 1:17:38Where there is no motive, there is apt to be no enthusiasm.
- 1:17:42Remember also that the three basic motives
- 1:17:44which has been said practically rule the world are one,
- 1:17:48the emotion of love, two, the emotion of sex, three,
- 1:17:53the desire for financial gain.
- 1:17:56A combination of all three of these motives,
- 1:17:58it has been claimed,
- 1:18:00can convert a mediocre person into a genius.
- 1:18:02And I leave the thought with you for consideration.
- 1:18:06And now until our next visit,
- 1:18:10I ask that you try the habit of moving with enthusiasm
- 1:18:14in all of your daily work and see
- 1:18:17how much better you will be.
- 1:18:22We come now to the ninth visit where we shall analyze
- 1:18:26the ninth principle of success which is personal initiative.
- 1:18:31Personal initiative is the dynamo
- 1:18:33which starts the faculty of imagination into action.
- 1:18:36In the process of translating one's definite major purpose
- 1:18:39into its physical or financial equivalent.
- 1:18:43If you aim for success above mediocrity,
- 1:18:46you will need to learn to act on
- 1:18:48your own personal initiative because your success
- 1:18:51is something which you must achieve for yourself
- 1:18:55without someone telling you what to do or how to do it.
- 1:18:59Incidentally, Cyrus H. K. Curtis,
- 1:19:02the former owner of the Saturday Evening Post
- 1:19:04and one of my collaborators in organizing
- 1:19:07the science of success philosophy was responsible
- 1:19:12for a motto on personal initiative of such great importance
- 1:19:17that I want you to have it.
- 1:19:21Said he, "There are two kinds of men
- 1:19:23who never amount to much,
- 1:19:26those who cannot do as they are told
- 1:19:28and those who can do nothing else."
- 1:19:32Of course, Mr. Curtis's implication is very clear.
- 1:19:35He implied that those who amount to something worthwhile
- 1:19:38in life are those who move on their own personal initiative
- 1:19:42without being told what to do or why they should do it.
- 1:19:46The men who stand out in the minds of the public as
- 1:19:48the greatest successes from the days of George Washington
- 1:19:52onto the present are those who chores their own occupation,
- 1:19:56business or profession, and moved on
- 1:19:58their own personal initiative in achieving their purpose.
- 1:20:02And those who are getting ahead most rapidly today
- 1:20:05no matter in what position they began
- 1:20:07are those who promote themselves to a higher place in life
- 1:20:10by acting on their own personal initiative.
- 1:20:14The habit of personal initiative not only inspires one
- 1:20:17to move on his own responsibility
- 1:20:19but it also influences him to carry it through
- 1:20:21until he completes that which he undertakes
- 1:20:24in a manner of pleasing to all concerned because he knows
- 1:20:28that a winner never quits and a quitter never wins.
- 1:20:32And right here is an appropriate place to say something
- 1:20:36I perhaps should have said before, namely,
- 1:20:39that a big success is made up of a great number
- 1:20:41of little circumstances each of which is so small
- 1:20:45and seemingly insignificant that most people pass it by
- 1:20:49as not worthy of notice.
- 1:20:51Some may think for example
- 1:20:54that the habit of personal initiative is it unimportant
- 1:20:57but we have only to take a look at the record of some
- 1:21:00of our greatest successes to recognize
- 1:21:04that personal initiative was an important factor
- 1:21:07without which they never would have achieved success.
- 1:21:11For example, no one told F.W. Woolworth to start
- 1:21:14a five and 10 cent store.
- 1:21:17The idea was his own.
- 1:21:18He acted on his own personal initiative
- 1:21:20in putting his ideas to action and to live to see
- 1:21:23it yield him a fortune well above $100 million.
- 1:21:28My distinguished business associate W. Clement Stone started
- 1:21:32his insurance business on his own personal initiative
- 1:21:36with an operating capital of only a 100 dollars
- 1:21:39but he followed through on that same personal initiative
- 1:21:42and made his humble beginning yield an annual gross income
- 1:21:46of many millions of dollars and it was that same habit
- 1:21:49of acting on his own personal initiative
- 1:21:52of doing the thing he wanted to do
- 1:21:54which inspired Mr. Stone to join forces with me
- 1:21:57in taking the science of success philosophy
- 1:21:59to millions of people throughout the world
- 1:22:02and undertaking, which it is believed may help more people
- 1:22:05to find their places in the world
- 1:22:07than as any other influence during the past hundred years.
- 1:22:12The habit of personal initiative was the chief trait
- 1:22:15which helped Henry J. Kaiser to build
- 1:22:17a great industrial empire and raise himself
- 1:22:20to a higher position in the industrial world.
- 1:22:23It was this trait of personal initiative
- 1:22:25which inspired Mr. Kaiser to pile up such an enormous record
- 1:22:29in the building of ships during World War II
- 1:22:32despite the fact that he had never built ships before.
- 1:22:36One day when I was lecturing to one of my classes
- 1:22:39I mentioned Henry J. Kaiser's wonderful record
- 1:22:41in building ships more cheaply and quickly
- 1:22:44than experienced ship builders had been able to do
- 1:22:47when one of my students spoke up and said
- 1:22:50Mr. Kaiser has having been a friend
- 1:22:53of Jesse Jones of the federal reserve bank did not hurt
- 1:22:56his chances of success in it, did it?
- 1:22:59Well for a moment it looked as if that question
- 1:23:01had placed me on a spot but I soon recovered my composure
- 1:23:05and came back with this reply.
- 1:23:07No, in knowing Mr. Jones did not hurt his chances,
- 1:23:11but think of the thousands of industrialists many of whom
- 1:23:15may also have known Mr. Jones
- 1:23:17but did not use their personal initiative
- 1:23:19in getting his financial help.
- 1:23:22Personal initiative is one quality which inspires one
- 1:23:25to form friendships and to make contact with people
- 1:23:28who can be an aid to them in times of need.
- 1:23:32It was my personal initiative which influenced
- 1:23:34Andrew Carnegie to give me an opportunity
- 1:23:37to organize the science of success philosophy.
- 1:23:40I now wish to give you an outline
- 1:23:42of the more important attributes
- 1:23:44of the person who has sufficient personal initiative
- 1:23:47to give him leadership in his chosen occupation.
- 1:23:50One, first of all, the person who follows the habit
- 1:23:53of personal initiative has a definite major purpose in life
- 1:23:57and a plan for entertainment.
- 1:24:00Two, and a master mind alliance with those whose help
- 1:24:03is essential in achieving his major purpose.
- 1:24:06Three, he has the necessary resistance and the will to win
- 1:24:10to carry him along when the going is hard
- 1:24:12and he meets with obstacles.
- 1:24:14Four, he makes decisions promptly when he has
- 1:24:17the necessary facts on which to base them
- 1:24:19and changes them slowly if at all.
- 1:24:22Five, he follows the habit of doing more than he is paid for
- 1:24:26and he does so in a pleasing positive mental attitude.
- 1:24:31Six, he accepts full responsibility for everything
- 1:24:35he undertakes and never passes the book
- 1:24:38when things go wrong.
- 1:24:39Seven, he can take friendly criticism without resentment
- 1:24:43because he has learned to profit by it.
- 1:24:46Eight, he knows what the nine basic motives are
- 1:24:49which inspire all human endeavors
- 1:24:51and never requests anyone to do anything for him
- 1:24:55without giving that person an adequate motive for doing so.
- 1:24:59Nine, he never expresses an opinion about anything
- 1:25:03unless he has thought the subject through
- 1:25:05and is prepared to state how he came by his opinion.
- 1:25:0910, he follows the habit of listening much
- 1:25:12and talking only when he had something to say
- 1:25:15which may benefit himself or others.
- 1:25:1811, he has a well developed sense of observation
- 1:25:21of small details and knows his job
- 1:25:24from the smallest detail to the greatest.
- 1:25:2612, he never tells anyone to do anything without suggesting
- 1:25:31why it should be done and how it may be done best.
- 1:25:3513, he follows the habit of concentrating his full attention
- 1:25:40on one thing at a time.
- 1:25:4214, his mental attitude is positive at all times
- 1:25:46when he is in communication with other people.
- 1:25:4915, if you ask him a question,
- 1:25:52he will give you a direct answer even if he has to tell you,
- 1:25:55he does not know correct answer.
- 1:25:5816, last but perhaps most important of all,
- 1:26:02he never puts off on to the moral that
- 1:26:04which should have been done last week
- 1:26:06because he knows that the habit of procrastination
- 1:26:09is near the top of the list of the causes of failure.
- 1:26:13If you can write okay on each of these 16 traits
- 1:26:16of personal initiative,
- 1:26:18you are a leader in your field of endeavor.
- 1:26:21When you come to examine yourself
- 1:26:22on the subject of personal initiative, just remember
- 1:26:26that your success or your failure depends very largely
- 1:26:30on the action you take in connection with your occupation.
- 1:26:33No one will tell you and what you should do
- 1:26:36no one will tell you what not to do.
- 1:26:39The decision must be your own, and you must follow through
- 1:26:42and carry out your decision on your own personal initiative.
- 1:26:46If you work for wages or a salary
- 1:26:49you should decide to promote yourself
- 1:26:51through your own personal initiative
- 1:26:53to the top of the scale in your occupation.
- 1:26:56And remember that your promotion is entirely in your hands.
- 1:27:01In my previous visits, I have given you a blueprint
- 1:27:04of the steps you should take in promoting yourself
- 1:27:06to whatever station in life you desire.
- 1:27:09Now, let me give you a brief review of eight principles
- 1:27:12we have covered previously.
- 1:27:14One, definite there's a purpose.
- 1:27:17By now you should know what you want most from life
- 1:27:20and you should have a plan for getting it.
- 1:27:23Here is the most important circumstance of your whole life
- 1:27:26or you must move on your own personal initiative
- 1:27:28because no one else can tell you what you should want most.
- 1:27:31Two, the master mind principle,
- 1:27:34if you have not already formed a friendly alliance
- 1:27:36with those who can help you in attaining
- 1:27:38your major purpose in life,
- 1:27:40you should move on your own personal initiative
- 1:27:42and form this alliance at once.
- 1:27:45Three, going the extra mile.
- 1:27:47This is a must if your major purpose
- 1:27:50is anything above mediocrity.
- 1:27:52Four, applied faith.
- 1:27:55This is the principle which gives you power in carrying
- 1:27:57out your definite major purpose and all minor purposes.
- 1:28:01Five, a pleasing personality is an asset of priceless value.
- 1:28:06And it too is something you must acquire
- 1:28:08through your personal initiative.
- 1:28:10Six, self discipline.
- 1:28:13The sixth principle of success is also something you acquire
- 1:28:17through your personal initiative.
- 1:28:19Seven, a positive mental attitude,
- 1:28:21which is the most important of the 12 great riches of life
- 1:28:24is also the product of your own personal initiative.
- 1:28:29Eight, enthusiasm is a state of mind
- 1:28:32which only you can generate
- 1:28:34through your personal initiative.
- 1:28:36You'll see therefore that personal initiative enters
- 1:28:39into every one of the success principles.
- 1:28:43And now until our next visit, may I remind you that
- 1:28:48there are two types of people who never amount to anything,
- 1:28:51those who will not do what they are told
- 1:28:55and those who will do nothing else.
- 1:29:00Our 10th visit brings us to one of the strangest
- 1:29:03of the 17 principles of success because it is the principle
- 1:29:07which makes it possible for you to convert into an asset
- 1:29:11every adversity, every disappointment, every defeat
- 1:29:16and every failure you meet with
- 1:29:17from now on the remainder of your life.
- 1:29:21Yes, the principle of learning from adversity
- 1:29:23makes it possible for you to transmute all
- 1:29:26your past failures and mistakes into an asset
- 1:29:29which will help you achieve outstanding success
- 1:29:32in the future.
- 1:29:33At the very outset of this visit
- 1:29:35I wish to call your attention to an important fact
- 1:29:38which may give you immediate possession
- 1:29:40of the great master key to success, namely,
- 1:29:44that your positive mental attitude is the only means
- 1:29:47by which you may convert adversity, defeats
- 1:29:50and the failures into assets.
- 1:29:52It seems to have been intended
- 1:29:54that everyone should experience adversities, defeats
- 1:29:57and even failures as a part of nature's method
- 1:29:59of disciplining people to learn how
- 1:30:02to take possession of their own minds.
- 1:30:05But they creator very wisely provided everyone
- 1:30:08with the means for converting these experiences
- 1:30:10into benefits of a priceless value.
- 1:30:13The means being our privilege of maintaining and directing
- 1:30:17a positive mental attitude.
- 1:30:20Despite the benefits which we may get
- 1:30:22from adversities and unpleasant experiences of every nature
- 1:30:26no one desires to meet with these experiences.
- 1:30:29If failure or defeat is just as unpleasant to me now
- 1:30:33as it was 30 odd years ago, when I was learning
- 1:30:35about failures and unpleasant experiences
- 1:30:38in the great university of hard knocks
- 1:30:41yet I would be something less than fair with you
- 1:30:45if I had neglected to tell you
- 1:30:47that my greatest blessings came from my greatest adversities
- 1:30:51but these blessings never would have been recognized by me
- 1:30:55if I had not learned the truth, that every adversity carries
- 1:30:58with it the seed of an equivalent benefit
- 1:31:01which is the very herb of this visit with you.
- 1:31:04Once you learn that adversities can be made to pay dividends
- 1:31:08you will acquire the habit of looking for that seed
- 1:31:10of an equivalent benefit in each such experience
- 1:31:13with which you meet.
- 1:31:15Come with me now and I shall give you some examples
- 1:31:18which prove conclusively
- 1:31:19that failures, defeats, unpleasant experiences
- 1:31:22can be converted into stepping stones on which one may rise
- 1:31:26to great heights of personal achievement.
- 1:31:28My first illustration concerns the man
- 1:31:31of whom you may have heard
- 1:31:32and I have no doubt you have eaten some of the food
- 1:31:34which he produced and marketed throughout the nation
- 1:31:37as a result of an adversity which would
- 1:31:40have stopped most men cold.
- 1:31:42The man was Milo C. Jones who owned a small farm
- 1:31:45near Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin
- 1:31:47on which he made only a fair living
- 1:31:49until he was stricken down with double paralysis
- 1:31:52which deprived him of every portion
- 1:31:54of his body except his brain.
- 1:31:56In this hour of his greatest adversity
- 1:31:58Milo C. Jones used his mind, took possession of it
- 1:32:02for the first time in his life, perhaps.
- 1:32:05And out of that mind came the idea of raising hogs
- 1:32:08and converting them into little pig sausage.
- 1:32:12And on that same farm where a previous to that adversity
- 1:32:15he made only a mere living, he found the seed
- 1:32:18of an equivalent benefit that compensated him
- 1:32:21for the loss of the use of his body and lived to see
- 1:32:24a little big sausage yield him a huge fortune.
- 1:32:28Isn't it strange that so often people have to be cut
- 1:32:31down by failure and defeat before they learned that
- 1:32:34they have minds capable of mastering all of their problems.
- 1:32:39Isn't it strange why Milo C. Jones did not discover
- 1:32:42the little pig sausage idea while he had a sound body.
- 1:32:46My next illustration is based on an adversity
- 1:32:49of a man who we all know because he was president
- 1:32:52of the United States and his name was Franklin D. Roosevelt
- 1:32:56who was stricken in the prime of his life with polio
- 1:33:00which destroyed the use of his legs.
- 1:33:03Instead of sitting on a street corner
- 1:33:05with a tin cup and some lead pencils
- 1:33:07as many another might have done under similar circumstances
- 1:33:11Franklin D. Roosevelt transmuted his affliction
- 1:33:14into a buildup of his self-reliance and lifted himself
- 1:33:17to the highest position available to mankind
- 1:33:20anywhere on this earth.
- 1:33:22Got that position and held it until he passed on.
- 1:33:26Held it longer than had any previous president.
- 1:33:30Verily, I tell you what all the enthusiasm at my command
- 1:33:35that you may find in your adversities
- 1:33:37the necessary challenge to inspire you onto success, such
- 1:33:40as you never would have known without these experiences.
- 1:33:44I do not suggest that you look for adversities
- 1:33:47or expect to meet with them but if you do so,
- 1:33:50just remember not to fear them.
- 1:33:53And instead of brooding over them, as most people do,
- 1:33:56let me suggest that you be different and to convert them
- 1:34:00into stepping stones on which you may rise
- 1:34:02to whatever place in life you have set for yourself.
- 1:34:06Three, my next illustration is based
- 1:34:09on you and all the adversities
- 1:34:11and failures you have ever experienced.
- 1:34:13I shall not go into details because I do not know
- 1:34:16the details of any such experiences you may have met with
- 1:34:19but this much I do know,
- 1:34:21I have brought to you in this visit the means
- 1:34:23by which you can convert all your past disappointments
- 1:34:26and all of your future adversities and failures
- 1:34:29into a seed of equivalent benefit.
- 1:34:32You can do this by the simple process
- 1:34:34of appropriating and putting to your use
- 1:34:36the nine success principles I have given you previously.
- 1:34:41If you do not remember these nine principles, write to me
- 1:34:44and I will tell you how to get copies of them.
- 1:34:47Right here, may I remind you of the great importance
- 1:34:50of following the principle of a positive mental attitude
- 1:34:52because this is the principle you will need most
- 1:34:55in converting unpleasant into assets.
- 1:34:59Four, my next illustration involves a very intimate
- 1:35:03personal experience of my own
- 1:35:05which began when my mother passed on.
- 1:35:07I was eight years of age.
- 1:35:09I know that the loss of one's mother at any age usually
- 1:35:12is regarded as an irreparable loss
- 1:35:14which offers no possible benefits.
- 1:35:17But even in the loss of loved ones
- 1:35:19we may find that there is a seed of an equivalent benefit.
- 1:35:22I found that seed in one of the most wonderful persons
- 1:35:26I have ever known, when my father brought home my new mother
- 1:35:30it was she who inspired me to prepare myself
- 1:35:33for the opportunity I was to receive later in life.
- 1:35:36When I met Andrew Carnegie and receive from him
- 1:35:39the commission to organize the world's
- 1:35:41first practical philosophy of personal success.
- 1:35:45Had it not been for the loss of my mother,
- 1:35:47I would not not be having this visit with you
- 1:35:50and my books would not now be serving to help millions
- 1:35:53of people throughout the world to find their places in life.
- 1:35:56Just remember this about adversities.
- 1:35:59Nothing is ever so bad or so unpleasant
- 1:36:02that it may not yield some benefit
- 1:36:04if we keep a positive mental attitude toward the experience
- 1:36:08and make it a habit to look for that seed
- 1:36:10of an equivalent benefit.
- 1:36:12This of course involves the application
- 1:36:15of that important success principle, personal initiative.
- 1:36:20Five, now I come to an illustration which involves
- 1:36:24our great American way of life and all the personal freedom
- 1:36:28and opportunities we enjoy under our way of life.
- 1:36:31And it begins with our defeat of the British in 1778
- 1:36:35probably every British believe that the loss
- 1:36:38of the American colonies was an irreparable loss
- 1:36:41which offered no possible benefits
- 1:36:43yet you and I know that if we had not defeated the British
- 1:36:47and made ourselves rich and powerful,
- 1:36:50the British empire probably would have been wiped out
- 1:36:53in World Wars one or two.
- 1:36:55We know also that although the British empire survived
- 1:36:59those two Wars, it was our financial help
- 1:37:02which saved the British from starvation and the bankruptcy.
- 1:37:05So today every Britisher should give thanks
- 1:37:09for the defeat of Lord Cornwallis armies
- 1:37:12because that defeats finally became the means
- 1:37:14of survival of the British empire.
- 1:37:17Six, my next illustration brings us face to face
- 1:37:21with an adversity which involves you and I
- 1:37:23and every other person now living.
- 1:37:26An adversity from which we have not as yet availed ourselves
- 1:37:29of that seed of an equivalent benefit
- 1:37:32which is to be found in all adversities.
- 1:37:34I have referenced to the trend in this
- 1:37:36and all other countries to rob individuals of their rights
- 1:37:40of personal freedom, a trend which is in direct violation
- 1:37:44of the obvious purpose of the creator
- 1:37:47to give every individual the privilege
- 1:37:49of freedom of thought and action.
- 1:37:51There is something definitely you and I can do
- 1:37:54about this common trend to rob us
- 1:37:56of our rights of personal freedom.
- 1:37:58We cannot turn it back entirely by our individual efforts
- 1:38:02but we can and we should do something about it
- 1:38:05where it affects us individually and where are we know
- 1:38:08what we can do and how we can do it.
- 1:38:11Of course you will ask,
- 1:38:13what can I do to influence a world trend?
- 1:38:16And I shall answer it by saying there
- 1:38:18is something definite that you can do.
- 1:38:20You can refuse to accept this common trend
- 1:38:23and take full possession of your own mind,
- 1:38:26thus fulfilling your personal responsibility
- 1:38:29to your creator.
- 1:38:31Remember, those two sealed envelops
- 1:38:33I mentioned in a previous visit.
- 1:38:35One of them is labeled riches you may enjoy
- 1:38:38by taking possession of your own mind.
- 1:38:41Very well, you have a responsibility to yourself,
- 1:38:44your loved ones, your creator,
- 1:38:47to take possession of your own mind
- 1:38:49and to direct it to ends of your own choice.
- 1:38:53This responsibility is yours, and no one else
- 1:38:55can rob you of it or fulfill it for you.
- 1:38:59You also have a responsibility to your country
- 1:39:02which has given you our great American way of life.
- 1:39:06Our great system of free enterprise
- 1:39:07which is so designed as to provide one
- 1:39:10with every possible motive for taking possession
- 1:39:13of his own mind and writing his own ticket in life.
- 1:39:17We should remember that our benefits
- 1:39:18under the American way of life
- 1:39:20like every other blessing we have been given at birth
- 1:39:24is something we can retain and enjoy only
- 1:39:28by making the fullest and best use of it.
- 1:39:32It is definitely a part of the overall plan
- 1:39:34of the universe to give man the benefit only
- 1:39:38of those blessings he recognizes, embraces
- 1:39:41and uses constructively.
- 1:39:43Tie your arm to your side and take it out of use
- 1:39:46and nature rebels immediately by causing the arm
- 1:39:49to atrophy, wither and become useless.
- 1:39:53Neglect to keep in contact with your friends
- 1:39:55and to cultivate them and you will lose them.
- 1:39:58Show indifference to the patrons
- 1:40:00from whom you earn your living
- 1:40:01or the employer who pays your wages.
- 1:40:04And very soon you find yourself
- 1:40:06without a market for your services.
- 1:40:08It is an inevitable law of nature that you lose
- 1:40:12that which you do not use.
- 1:40:14And of course, this applies to the use of your own mind
- 1:40:17the same as to everything else.
- 1:40:20And we who so often boast that we are citizens
- 1:40:23of the richest, the greatest
- 1:40:24and the most powerful nation civilization has yet produced
- 1:40:28we'll do well to remember this law
- 1:40:30through which we lose that which we do not properly use.
- 1:40:35In this visit, I have brought you what may be a surprise
- 1:40:39or even a shock by introducing this great principle
- 1:40:43of profiting by adversity.
- 1:40:45If you are ready for this principle,
- 1:40:47you will embrace it at once and never again
- 1:40:50as long as you live will you brood
- 1:40:52over unpleasant experiences without knowing full well
- 1:40:56that your efforts could be better employed
- 1:40:58by a searching for that seed of an equivalent benefit
- 1:41:01which is available in those experiences.
- 1:41:04Now, before I conclude this visit,
- 1:41:06I shall give you this assignment which if you carry
- 1:41:09it out sincerely may well bring you a new birth
- 1:41:12of opportunity such as you never dreamed of experiencing.
- 1:41:16Go back into your past experiences,
- 1:41:18study each adversity and failure you may have experienced
- 1:41:22and look for that seed of an equivalent benefit
- 1:41:25you had not before discovered
- 1:41:27and you may find yourself richer
- 1:41:29than you believed yourself to be.
- 1:41:31And now, until our next visit,
- 1:41:34just remember nothing can be called failure
- 1:41:39until you accepted as such.
- 1:41:43We have now gone to our 11th visit
- 1:41:46where I shall present creative vision, the success principle
- 1:41:49which is responsible for the building
- 1:41:52of all of our plans, aims and purposes.
- 1:41:56It has been said that the imagination is the workshop
- 1:41:58where in we fashioned the purposes of our brain
- 1:42:01and the ideas of our soul.
- 1:42:04I do not know of a better definition
- 1:42:05of imagination than this.
- 1:42:08There are two forms of imagination.
- 1:42:10First, there is synthetic imagination which consists
- 1:42:14of organizing and putting together of recognized ideas,
- 1:42:18concepts and facts arranged in a new combination.
- 1:42:23Very seldom does anyone create an idea
- 1:42:26or anything else absolutely new.
- 1:42:29Nearly everything known to civilization is but
- 1:42:32a combination of something that is old.
- 1:42:34Secondly, there is creative imagination, which operates
- 1:42:38through the sixth sense and has its base
- 1:42:41in the subconscious section of the brain
- 1:42:43and serves as the exclusive medium
- 1:42:46through which basically new ideas or facts are revealed.
- 1:42:50Let me give you some examples
- 1:42:52of synthetic imagination in action.
- 1:42:54One, Edison's invention of the incandescent electric lamp
- 1:42:59was the creation of synthetic imagination
- 1:43:01because it was created by a bringing together
- 1:43:04in a new combination to old and well known principles.
- 1:43:08Two, Clarence Saunders, his idea on which he had
- 1:43:12the big English store system was based
- 1:43:15was the result of synthetic imagination
- 1:43:17because he merely borrowed the self-help cafeteria plan
- 1:43:21and introduced it into the grocery store business.
- 1:43:23But, despite the simplicity of the plan
- 1:43:27it is said to have yielded its organizer $4 million
- 1:43:30during the first four years after it was put to work.
- 1:43:33Three, Henry Ford's first automobile was created
- 1:43:37through synthetic imagination by the simple procedure
- 1:43:40of bringing together the well-known method
- 1:43:42of transportation, the horse and buggy
- 1:43:44and the steam propelled thrashing machine.
- 1:43:47Both ideas were old, but it remained for Henry Ford
- 1:43:50to combine them in a new method of use.
- 1:43:53And he made himself the most distinguished industrialist
- 1:43:56of his era by his achievement,
- 1:43:59not to mention a fabulous fortune.
- 1:44:01Four, the man who dipped a hunk of ice cream in chocolate
- 1:44:05placed a stick in it for a handle and called it Eskimo pie
- 1:44:09used synthetic imagination, and started a new industry
- 1:44:13which still has a widespread outlet
- 1:44:15on groceries and yielded him a huge some.
- 1:44:18Is it safe to assume that the creator
- 1:44:20of this simple plan of merchandising was well compensated
- 1:44:23for his use of his synthetic imagination.
- 1:44:27Five, F.W. Woolworth made use of synthetic imagination
- 1:44:31by the simple procedure of setting up a retail store
- 1:44:35in which a large variety of merchandise retailing
- 1:44:37at five and 10 cents per item was offered to the public
- 1:44:41and lived to see his merchandising innovation started
- 1:44:45a series of similar retail stores which grows annually
- 1:44:48many millions of dollars in sales
- 1:44:51and made Woolworth rich in the bargain.
- 1:44:53Now, I shall give you some examples of creative imagination.
- 1:44:57One, Edison's invention of the phonograph was the outgrowth
- 1:45:01of creative imagination because no part
- 1:45:04of his invention had ever been known or used previously.
- 1:45:07Two, Senor Marconi his invention of wireless communication
- 1:45:11was also the outgrowth of creative imagination
- 1:45:15because it was based on basically new ideas
- 1:45:18which never had been used previously.
- 1:45:20He was the first to discover the means
- 1:45:23by which the ether could be made to take the place
- 1:45:25of wires in the transmission of sound.
- 1:45:28Three, Madam Curie's discovery of radium
- 1:45:32was also the outgrowth of creative imagination,
- 1:45:35because no one before her had ever revealed
- 1:45:37either the actual existence of radium
- 1:45:40or the method by which it could be recovered or refined.
- 1:45:44Four, Wilbur and Orville Wright's perfection
- 1:45:47of the modern airplane was partly the result
- 1:45:50of creative imagination and partly the result
- 1:45:53of synthetic imagination because others previous
- 1:45:57to their time I had discovered some of the ideas
- 1:45:59they used successfully but they were the first
- 1:46:02to coordinate those ideas so they worked.
- 1:46:05Five, Robert G. LeTourneau made effective use
- 1:46:08of creative imagination by building heavy dirt
- 1:46:11removing machinery, which involved ideas never before used
- 1:46:15although he was practically unskilled in engineering
- 1:46:18and had very little schooling of any kind.
- 1:46:20I worked with Mr. LeTourneau for a year and a half
- 1:46:23during which I saw him in action many times
- 1:46:26when he was drawing entirely upon the faculty
- 1:46:28of creative imagination and receiving his ideas from sources
- 1:46:32outside of his own immediate education or knowledge.
- 1:46:36Now, let me give you a few suggestions as to how you
- 1:46:39may be able to make profitable use of your imagination
- 1:46:42keeping in mind that the faculty of your imagination
- 1:46:45like every other faculty of your mind becomes still
- 1:46:49through disuse and alert through use.
- 1:46:52One, create a system of merchandising which can be carried
- 1:46:57on by the operators of gasoline filling stations
- 1:46:59throughout the nation.
- 1:47:01And you may make your idea yield you more profit
- 1:47:04than Clarence Saunders made
- 1:47:05from his piggly wiggly store plan.
- 1:47:07Perhaps the system would consist of items
- 1:47:10which could be dispensed by coin in the slot machines.
- 1:47:13Two, create a plan or system which will cause motorists
- 1:47:17to be as courteous and thoughtful of others on the highway
- 1:47:21as they are in their own homes.
- 1:47:23And you may cut down the outrageous death rate
- 1:47:25by automobile accidents
- 1:47:27and make yourself both popular and rich.
- 1:47:30Perhaps you might add to this idea, some plan of engineering
- 1:47:34by which public highways would be so operated
- 1:47:37as to force motorist to drive with greater care.
- 1:47:41And you might also create some practical plan
- 1:47:44by which motorists of good reputation would be deputized
- 1:47:48as auxiliary traffic officers
- 1:47:50with two-way radios in their cars
- 1:47:52and authority to give tickets and to make arrest.
- 1:47:55Three, create a satisfactory substitute for cigarettes.
- 1:48:00And you may make yourself richer than you need to be.
- 1:48:03Four, give me an acceptable method
- 1:48:05for taking these principles of success
- 1:48:07to children of the graded school age
- 1:48:10and I will tell you how to make yourself rich
- 1:48:12both in money and in happiness which comes
- 1:48:15from contributions of service
- 1:48:16which benefit posterity by improving the youth.
- 1:48:20Give me a plan which will arouse
- 1:48:22and alert people to recognize
- 1:48:24and make use of the potential of their own minds
- 1:48:27and I will give you a job for the remainder of your life
- 1:48:29that pay, which perhaps you never dreamed of getting.
- 1:48:33Six, bring me an acceptable storybook, slide it
- 1:48:37to the interest of children from six to 12 years of age
- 1:48:40based upon the 17 principles of the science of success.
- 1:48:43And I will ensure the publication
- 1:48:45and distribution of the book on a scale
- 1:48:47which will make you richer than you'll need to be.
- 1:48:50This idea probably can be best refined through the mind
- 1:48:54of a woman who understands children loves them
- 1:48:57and can speak in terms that will get their attention.
- 1:49:00And right here in case you have not already recognized
- 1:49:03the fact I am bringing you very near the point
- 1:49:06where people sometimes tune in on their creative imagination
- 1:49:10and to come up with ideas which benefit great numbers
- 1:49:13of people and to make themselves popular and rich.
- 1:49:17I'm going to give you these suggestions solely
- 1:49:19as inspiration intended to introduce you
- 1:49:21to your faculty of creative imagination.
- 1:49:25All the good ideas have been used up, did I hear you say?
- 1:49:29Quite to the contrary the best ideas are yet to be revealed

- 1:49:36There are no more opportunities to become rich,
- 1:49:39did I hear you say?

- 1:50:59I will tell you what to do with it.
- 1:51:02I am still talking to you about exercising
- 1:51:04your faculty of imagination,
- 1:51:06but I am limited as to the number
- 1:51:08of ideas I can give you in so short a time
- 1:51:11but I will give you some more useful ideas in my next visit.
- 1:51:15Imagination is a trait which becomes alert only
- 1:51:18by constant action based on the success principles
- 1:51:21I have described in these visits
- 1:51:24you are the one who must supply this action.
- 1:51:31The rules of accurate thinking are so clear and simple
- 1:51:34that I often wonder why so few people ever take time
- 1:51:38to learn the rules since accurate thinking
- 1:51:40is the very foundation of all successful achievements.
- 1:51:44In this visit I shall give you a working description
- 1:51:47of the rules of accurate thinking
- 1:51:49which all successful people follow.
- 1:51:52First of all, accurate thinking is based
- 1:51:54on two simple fundamentals.
- 1:51:56They are called inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning.
- 1:52:00Inductive reasoning is used when the necessary facts
- 1:52:03on which to base your thinking are not available.
- 1:52:06In this case you act on hypotheses
- 1:52:08or what you assume the facts to be.
- 1:52:11Deductive reasoning is used when you have the facts
- 1:52:14or what appear to be the facts
- 1:52:15on which to base your thinking.
- 1:52:17The next step in accurate thinking is to separate facts
- 1:52:21from fiction or hearsay evidence and determine
- 1:52:24whether you are dealing with hypotheses or real facts.
- 1:52:28When you are sure you have dependable facts
- 1:52:31on which to base your thinking,
- 1:52:33you take the second step by separating
- 1:52:35these facts into two classes.
- 1:52:37One is the important facts
- 1:52:40and the other is unimportant facts.
- 1:52:42When you do this, you may be surprised
- 1:52:44at the overwhelming lake greater number
- 1:52:46of unimportant facts you deal with daily
- 1:52:49than there are important facts.
- 1:52:51At this point, you're almost sure to want
- 1:52:53to ask the question, what is an important fact
- 1:52:57and how can I distinguish it from an unimportant fact?
- 1:53:01And I shall give you the answer
- 1:53:03to this very important question by saying
- 1:53:06that any important fact is any fact which will aid you
- 1:53:10to any extent whatsoever in attaining the object
- 1:53:13of your major purpose in life
- 1:53:15and all other facts as far as you are concerned
- 1:53:19are unimportant and you should waste no time with them.
- 1:53:23After this visit is over,
- 1:53:25you can employ the next hour to a great benefit to yourself.
- 1:53:29If you will set down on paper
- 1:53:31a list of all the facts you deal with yesterday
- 1:53:34separating them into two classes important and unimportant.
- 1:53:40As a matter of fact, you will make a profound discovery
- 1:53:42regarding accurate thinking
- 1:53:44if you follow the habit of daily taking inventory
- 1:53:47of all the facts that claimed your attention during the day
- 1:53:50putting them down on paper in two separate columns,
- 1:53:53one labeled important facts
- 1:53:55and the other labeled unimportant facts.
- 1:53:58Now, let us turn our attention to the subject of opinions
- 1:54:01and see to what extent loose on sound opinions
- 1:54:05are mistaken for accurate thinking.
- 1:54:07To start with, let us recognize the truth
- 1:54:10that most opinions are without value
- 1:54:12because they are based on bias, prejudice, intolerance,
- 1:54:16guesswork, hearsay evidence and out and out ignorance.
- 1:54:21These are harsh words I'm using
- 1:54:23and they represent the source of most of the tragedies
- 1:54:26of life which people need with on necessarily.
- 1:54:29And I would say that of all the tragedies
- 1:54:31which cause misery and failure, none is more merciless
- 1:54:35or destructive than those which grow out of the indifference
- 1:54:38of people who make no attempt to learn
- 1:54:40how to think accurately.
- 1:54:42I shall never forget an experience I had
- 1:54:44with president Woodrow Wilson while
- 1:54:46I was working for him during World War I.
- 1:54:49I asked the president what effect he believed World War I
- 1:54:52would have on civilization.
- 1:54:54And his reply was brief, but it was a masterpiece
- 1:54:57which you should remember as long as you live.
- 1:55:00"I cannot answer your question," said the president,
- 1:55:03"because I have no facts on which to base an opinion."
- 1:55:07If you will remember Woodrow Wilson's 15 word speech
- 1:55:10every time you were about to express an opinion
- 1:55:13about anything, the chances are that you will soon get
- 1:55:16out of the habit of expressing or even having opinions
- 1:55:19not based on something more substantial than biases,
- 1:55:23prejudices, and emotional feelings,
- 1:55:25which often serve as fathers to facts.
- 1:55:29You will learn if you observe carefully
- 1:55:31that the more successful a person is,
- 1:55:33the less he is inclined to express wild unjustified
- 1:55:37opinions about anything.
- 1:55:39Also, you must have observed already that the drifters
- 1:55:42who are suffering with frustrations because they recognize
- 1:55:45they are failures usually have an assortment of opinions
- 1:55:49on about everything you can imagine.
- 1:55:51When I hear someone expressing a definite opinion
- 1:55:54about something of which I have definite reason
- 1:55:56to believe he knows little or nothing
- 1:55:58I think of an experience I had when I stopped a quaker
- 1:56:01on the streets of Philadelphia
- 1:56:03and asked him the time of day.
- 1:56:05He took out his watch, examined it carefully
- 1:56:08and then in a slow emphatic tone of voice
- 1:56:10he said, "Well, sir, according to this alleged time piece
- 1:56:16it appears to be approximately one minute
- 1:56:20and 10 seconds past 12 o'clock."
- 1:56:23I was particularly impressed by the care
- 1:56:26with which this quaker identified the source
- 1:56:28of his information which he was passing on to me.
- 1:56:31And I often thought afterward how beneficial it would be
- 1:56:35if all people who express opinions or give out information
- 1:56:38would take the time to identify the source
- 1:56:41from which they were able to speak.
- 1:56:43I cannot influence all people to engage
- 1:56:45in this sort of safe thinking,
- 1:56:47but I can suggest that you give it consideration
- 1:56:50in connection with this visit
- 1:56:52on the subject of accurate thinking.
- 1:56:54Now, I shall give you a simple rule which may help
- 1:56:57you avoid being misled by unsound opinions
- 1:57:00expressed by other people.
- 1:57:02When you hear someone make a statement
- 1:57:04which your reasoning cannot accept as being sound
- 1:57:07or what you question or should for safety
- 1:57:10to say question for any reason whatsoever
- 1:57:13ask a simple forward question.
- 1:57:16How do you know?
- 1:57:19Then stand firm on that question on either force the speaker
- 1:57:23to identify the source from which he got the information
- 1:57:26he is endeavoring to pass on as facts
- 1:57:28or reject the statement entirely as if it had not been made
- 1:57:32and do this no matter who is speaking
- 1:57:35or what may be his reputation for truth and veracity.
- 1:57:39Remember you are given as your richest birthright
- 1:57:42the privilege of controlling your own thoughts.
- 1:57:45Therefore treat this divine gift with the profound respect
- 1:57:48to which is entitled and do not allow anyone to do
- 1:57:51your thinking for you or to influence your thinking
- 1:57:54in any matter whatsoever, except by the rules
- 1:57:57of accurate thinking I am passing on to you.
- 1:58:00Follow this procedure regardless of what people think or say
- 1:58:04about your method of thinking.
- 1:58:05If they wish to call you a cynic or a doubting Thomas
- 1:58:08let that be their misfortune, but for your own good go right
- 1:58:12on thinking by rules which will save you from many mistakes
- 1:58:16and tragedies throughout your life.
- 1:58:18Now, I will give you seven rules to follow,
- 1:58:21which if you memorize them and follow them as a daily habit
- 1:58:25may bring you top rating as an accurate thinker.
- 1:58:28One, never accept the opinions of other people
- 1:58:31as being facts until you have learned the source
- 1:58:34of those opinions and satisfied yourself of their accuracy.
- 1:58:37Two, remember that free advice no matter from it is received
- 1:58:42will bear the closest of examination
- 1:58:44before it is acted upon as safe.
- 1:58:46And generally speaking, this sort of advice
- 1:58:50is worth exactly what it costs.
- 1:58:53Three, alert yourself immediately
- 1:58:55when you hear anyone speaking of others in a discourteous
- 1:58:58or slanderous spirit because this very fact should put you
- 1:59:02on notice that what you are hearing is biased
- 1:59:04to say the very least about it and it may be out
- 1:59:08and out misstatement.
- 1:59:10Four, in asking others for information
- 1:59:13do not disclose to them what you wish the information to be
- 1:59:16because most people have the bad habit
- 1:59:18of trying to please under such circumstances.
- 1:59:21Well measured tactful questions can be of great benefit
- 1:59:25to you in thinking accurately.
- 1:59:27Five, remember that anything which exists anywhere
- 1:59:31throughout the universe is capable of proof
- 1:59:34and where no such proof is available,
- 1:59:36it is safer to assume nothing exists.
- 1:59:39Six, one of the great unexplainable miracles consist
- 1:59:43in the fact that both truth and falsehood no matter
- 1:59:46by what means they may be expressed carry with them
- 1:59:49a silent invisible means of identifying themselves as such.
- 1:59:54Therefore, remember this truth and begin developing
- 1:59:58the necessary intuitive faculty to enable you to sense
- 2:00:02what is false and what is true.
- 2:00:05Seven, follow the habit of asking, how do you know,
- 2:00:09when anyone makes a statement you cannot identify as true.
- 2:00:13Follow this habit faithfully
- 2:00:14and you will see many persons squirm and turn red
- 2:00:18in the face when you insist upon a direct reply.
- 2:00:21The most accurate thinkers are the scientists
- 2:00:24they investigate with open minds and never allow
- 2:00:27their wishes to become the fathers of facts,
- 2:00:30but deal with each fact as it is not
- 2:00:33as they would like it to be.
- 2:00:35Now, one final word of warning
- 2:00:37I feel I should leave with you, study yourself carefully
- 2:00:40and you may discover that your own emotions are
- 2:00:44your greatest handicap in the business of accurate thinking.
- 2:00:48It is easy for you to believe
- 2:00:49that which you wish to believe.
- 2:00:51And unfortunately, that is precisely what most people do.
- 2:00:55This is a method by which many people condemn themselves
- 2:00:59to eternal failure and defeat.
- 2:01:01And it is a method which opens wide that sealed envelope
- 2:01:05which contains the list of penalties they must pay
- 2:01:07for neglecting to take possession of their minds
- 2:01:10and use them for constructive ends beneficial to themselves.
- 2:01:15And now until our next visit, may I say goodbye.
- 2:01:22The 13th visit brings us to the analysis of a law of nature
- 2:01:26which is the basis of all of our habits
- 2:01:29both the good habits and the bad.
- 2:01:32This law is a vital part of the 17 success principles
- 2:01:36because it is the means by which you
- 2:01:39and every other person can put into operation
- 2:01:43an irresistible power by which your aims and purposes
- 2:01:46are attained almost automatically
- 2:01:49by the action of your habits.
- 2:01:52I have named this law cosmic habit force
- 2:01:55because it is the law which gives definiteness of action
- 2:01:58to everything which moves throughout the entire universe.
- 2:02:03It keeps the stars and planets in their accustomed places
- 2:02:07and it fixes the life patterns of every living thing
- 2:02:11from the smallest insects to the largest animal accepting
- 2:02:16only man who has been given the means
- 2:02:18by which he may use this law to establish his own habits
- 2:02:22and determine his own desires and movements throughout life.
- 2:02:27Cosmic habit force binds every living thing lower
- 2:02:30in the scale of intelligence than man
- 2:02:33with what we call instinct.
- 2:02:35But man can rise above these fixed patterns
- 2:02:38by which lower forms of life live
- 2:02:40and establish his own pattern.
- 2:02:43This privilege, as I have mentioned in former visits is
- 2:02:47the only thing over which man has complete power
- 2:02:50of control and direction.
- 2:02:53It's interesting to observe that the creator never gives man
- 2:02:57any form of riches without sending along with it
- 2:03:00the means by which man may do whatever
- 2:03:03he pleases with those riches.
- 2:03:06In order that you may get the full benefit
- 2:03:08of this visit on cosmic habit force, it will be necessary
- 2:03:11for you to review what I've said previously,
- 2:03:14in connection with the 12th principles of success
- 2:03:17I have already described particularly
- 2:03:19the principle of definitive of purpose.
- 2:03:22Like every other natural law, cosmic habit force has
- 2:03:26both a positive and a negative potential application.
- 2:03:30The negative application of this law
- 2:03:31is called hypnotic rhythm,
- 2:03:33which means among other possible results
- 2:03:36it fastens upon individuals that by our neglect
- 2:03:39to fix our thoughts upon the things we desire in life
- 2:03:43and thereby gain the power of cosmic habit force
- 2:03:46in attaining these desires, the law automatically acts
- 2:03:50through the negative hypnotic rhythm feature
- 2:03:53and the fixes our minds on the things we do not desire
- 2:03:56and attracts to us the physical counterpart
- 2:03:59of these desires.
- 2:04:01Understand this principle of the law of cosmic habit force
- 2:04:05and obviously you will have a better conception
- 2:04:08as to how essential it is to keep your mind occupied
- 2:04:11with the life pattern and the things
- 2:04:13and circumstances you desire until this pattern
- 2:04:16is taken over and made permanent by cosmic habit force.
- 2:04:20Cosmic habit force is the watchdog, so to speak,
- 2:04:24which looked over your shoulder all through life,
- 2:04:27examines every thought you release,
- 2:04:29every act in which you engage and forces upon you
- 2:04:32the penalties or the rewards in those two sealed envelopes
- 2:04:36I described a previous visit.
- 2:04:39When you understand the principle of cosmic habit force
- 2:04:42it is clear enough that you cannot go through life
- 2:04:45without using the power of this law to carry out
- 2:04:48the circumstances and the desires you voluntarily choose
- 2:04:52or by your neglect allow the same law to force
- 2:04:55you to pay the penalties I described.
- 2:04:58You have the power of choice here
- 2:05:00the same as in all other things
- 2:05:02but your neglect to exercise this power brings certain
- 2:05:06if not always swift retribution upon you.
- 2:05:09Perhaps you now see why I warned you in a previous visit
- 2:05:13that the two sealed envelopes were not imaginary but real.
- 2:05:17And of course, you now understand
- 2:05:18that you must avail yourself of the benefits of one
- 2:05:22or be forced to accept the penalties of the other.
- 2:05:25There is no halfway compromise for any human being.
- 2:05:29I'll ponder over this profound truth
- 2:05:31and you will probably get a more impressive understanding
- 2:05:34of the power which is available to you
- 2:05:36through the application of the 17 success principles
- 2:05:40of the science of success.
- 2:05:43And you may also acquire a better understanding as to why
- 2:05:46these 17 principles have spread throughout the world
- 2:05:49without organized business management behind them.
- 2:05:53Why is this science of success philosophy is believed
- 2:05:56to have brought personal success to more people
- 2:05:59than has any other philosophy designed to help individuals
- 2:06:03to take possession of their own minds.
- 2:06:07The nearest to a description of the law
- 2:06:08of cosmic habit force I have seen
- 2:06:11is Emerson's law of compensation
- 2:06:13in which he so clearly established the truth
- 2:06:16that nothing ever just happens by luck
- 2:06:18but every effect has its definite call
- 2:06:21all be it, we often observe affects the causes
- 2:06:24of which we cannot isolate or understand.
- 2:06:27If you will read Emerson's essay on compensation
- 2:06:30again, in view of what I have said about the law
- 2:06:33of cosmic habit force, you may get much more from it
- 2:06:36than you absorb from it previously.
- 2:06:38Now I shall give you a variety of illustrations
- 2:06:41as to how the law of cosmic habit force operates.
- 2:06:44One, first of all, let me call your attention to the fact
- 2:06:47that cosmic habit force fixes the habits of the electrons
- 2:06:51and protons of matter so that their relationship
- 2:06:54and the chemical behavior always follow the same pattern.
- 2:06:58Thus, we see that everything throughout the universe comes
- 2:07:01under the influence of cosmic habit force
- 2:07:03and everything moves and exists by a pattern
- 2:07:07which is immutable and enduring except man,
- 2:07:10who, as I have said, can break the habits established
- 2:07:14by cosmic habit force which affect him
- 2:07:16and set up in their place habits of his own choice.
- 2:07:20Two, cosmic habit force fixes the pattern
- 2:07:23of every form of vegetation which growers from the soil
- 2:07:26of the earth so that each thing reproduces
- 2:07:29after its own pattern, a grain of wheat always reproduces
- 2:07:33other grains of wheat but never makes the mistake
- 2:07:36of producing oats or some other form of growth.
- 2:07:40An Oak tree always springs from an acre
- 2:07:42but never from any other cores.
- 2:07:44The pattern having been permanently fixed in the acre
- 2:07:47by the law of cosmic habit force.
- 2:07:50One atom of hydrogen and two atoms of oxygen combined
- 2:07:54always produce water, never anything else
- 2:07:58because the pattern of their chemical reaction
- 2:08:01has been fixed by cosmic habit force.
- 2:08:04Three, when the human mind is focused on
- 2:08:07a definite major purpose, the law of cosmic habit force goes
- 2:08:10into action immediately and attracts to the individual
- 2:08:14the material equivalent of that purpose
- 2:08:17and the procedure is inexorable and never varies.
- 2:08:21However, hypnotic rhythm, the negative application
- 2:08:24of the law will adjust as definitely attract to one
- 2:08:27all the undesirable things and circumstances
- 2:08:30which the mind is allowed to dwell upon such as poverty,
- 2:08:34ill, health, failure, fear and other undesirable things.
- 2:08:39Four, cosmic habit force expressing itself
- 2:08:42through the emotion of sex is the means
- 2:08:45by which every living thing perpetuates its species.
- 2:08:49Understand this truth and you will better understand
- 2:08:52the irresistible forces of the profound emotion of sex,
- 2:08:56the means by which nature creates all living things.
- 2:09:00You will also better understand why aims and purposes
- 2:09:03which are expressed orally under the great creative forces
- 2:09:07of sex emotion are acted upon so rapidly
- 2:09:10by cosmic habit force.
- 2:09:12And you will understand why it is so essential
- 2:09:15to learn how to transmute the emotion of sex
- 2:09:18into the carrying out of your aims and purposes.
- 2:09:21Five, we sometimes hear people speak of successful men
- 2:09:25as being on the beam by which they mean that those
- 2:09:29who enjoy success have established a success thought pattern
- 2:09:33in their minds which cosmic habit force has picked up
- 2:09:36and carry it out to its logical conclusion.
- 2:09:40You are on the beam when you take possession of your mind,
- 2:09:44direct it to delve ends in his spirit of belief
- 2:09:47in your attainment of those ends and keep your mind busy
- 2:09:52in carrying out your purpose instead of allowing it to drift
- 2:09:55to subject you wish to avoid.
- 2:09:58You are on the beam when you can truthfully say,
- 2:10:02I know precisely what I want from life
- 2:10:05and I have faith I shall get it.
- 2:10:08You are not all my beam when you have no definite
- 2:10:11major purpose and you are drifting aimlessly through life.
- 2:10:15People who are failures also are on the beam
- 2:10:19but they are on the negative side of the beam
- 2:10:21because they have neglected to use those riches
- 2:10:24which came over with them and that sealed envelope.
- 2:10:27And they have placed themselves
- 2:10:29under the influence of hypnotic rhythm
- 2:10:32which is the negative application of cosmic habit force.
- 2:10:35There is one word which doctors dread
- 2:10:37and it is the word fixation
- 2:10:40which means that a sick person believes in his sickness
- 2:10:44as something which cannot be cured.
- 2:10:46Fixations can become a priceless asset by those
- 2:10:49who have discovered the great master key to success
- 2:10:53and have learned how to develop fixations in their minds
- 2:10:56based on the things they desire most in life.
- 2:11:00Cosmic habit force is the power
- 2:11:02which makes fixations permanent.
- 2:11:05You should have a definite fixation based
- 2:11:08on your major purpose in life
- 2:11:10but you are the only one who can create this fixation.
- 2:11:14You can do it by taking possession of your own mind
- 2:11:17and keeping it directed toward the attainment
- 2:11:19of your major purpose.
- 2:11:21If you will do this by following all the instructions
- 2:11:24I have given you in these visits,
- 2:11:26in a short time you will find yourself on the beam
- 2:11:29and headed directly toward everything you desire
- 2:11:33and deserve to receive.
- 2:11:35Lastly, remember that your mental attitude is something
- 2:11:38you will control outright and you must use self-discipline
- 2:11:42until you create a thought pattern or thought habits
- 2:11:46which keep your mental attitude positive at all times.
- 2:11:49Your mental attitude is important
- 2:11:51because it acts as a magnet which attracts
- 2:11:54to you everything, every circumstance
- 2:11:56which makes you what you are and where you are.
- 2:12:01If you wish to keep on the beam that leads to success,
- 2:12:04be sure that you give cosmic habit force a thought pattern
- 2:12:07based on the things you want most in life
- 2:12:09and it will do the rest.
- 2:12:12And now, let me close this
- 2:12:14with my favorite expression of gratitude.
- 2:12:16Oh divine providence, I ask not for more riches
- 2:12:20but moral wisdom with which to make wiser use of the riches
- 2:12:23you gave me birth consisting in the power to control
- 2:12:27and direct my own mind to whatever ends I desire.
- 2:12:31(upbeat music)
