  1. 0:00a new paper published in march of this
  2. 0:02year 2022 showed that the combination of
  3. 0:05glycine and nac supplementation in mice
  4. 0:08extended their lifespan by a whopping 24
  5. 0:11percent so in this video we'll go
  6. 0:13through the background research on
  7. 0:14glycine and neck supplementation we'll
  8. 0:17have a deep dive into this new paper and
  9. 0:19then i'll share with you if it changes
  10. 0:20anything for my supplement stack let's
  11. 0:23get into it as we age our levels of a
  12. 0:26powerful antioxidant called glutathione
  13. 0:28appear to go down and this is a problem
  14. 0:31because glutathione is a critical
  15. 0:32regulator of oxidative stress and our
  16. 0:35immune function but glycine and neck are
  17. 0:38critical building blocks for glutathione
  18. 0:41and we can see from a 2021 human pilot
  19. 0:44study that the combination of neck and
  20. 0:46glycine it can correct the glutathione
  21. 0:49deficiency so after glycine and mac were
  22. 0:52supplemented for 24 weeks in older
  23. 0:54adults it corrected the lower levels of
  24. 0:56glutathione in the blood this is
  25. 0:58fantastic because we can see from the
  26. 1:002002 paper that as we age the oxidative
  27. 1:04stress it increases but our body it
  28. 1:06seems to cope okay with it until we
  29. 1:08reach 45 years old where we reach a
  30. 1:11tipping point and the body can't cope
  31. 1:13anymore our glutathione levels from that
  32. 1:15stage decrease so by supplementing with
  33. 1:18neck and glycine it looks like we can
  34. 1:20support our glutathione levels and keep
  35. 1:23them at a healthy level but that begs
  36. 1:25the question if we're trying to boost
  37. 1:27glutathione why not just take
  38. 1:29glutathione supplements directly the
  39. 1:31trouble is over-the-counter glutathione
  40. 1:33supplements they are of limited value
  41. 1:35because they're quickly broken down in
  42. 1:37our environment so by the time that we
  43. 1:39take the glutathione supplement in most
  44. 1:42of it would have already broken down
  45. 1:44this has led to some supplement
  46. 1:45companies creating liposomal versions of
  47. 1:48glutathione overall in the liposomal
  48. 1:51form the glutathione it can be absorbed
  49. 1:53but the trouble is it bypasses all of
  50. 1:56the body's checks and balances and it
  51. 1:58can directly get into our cells which
  52. 2:00can be incredibly dangerous since the
  53. 2:02body can't regulate the liposomal
  54. 2:04glutathione in theory toxic levels can
  55. 2:07build up instead what we're looking for
  56. 2:09is a perfect balance between oxidants
  57. 2:11and antioxidants this was highlighted in
  58. 2:14the landmark 2009 paper titled the
  59. 2:17hallmarks of aging in this paper the
  60. 2:19authors say that oxidants they can be
  61. 2:21regarded as a stress elicited survival
  62. 2:24signal aimed at compensating for the
  63. 2:26progressive deterioration associated
  64. 2:29with aging however as our age advances
  65. 2:32the levels of oxidants increase in an
  66. 2:35attempt to maintain survival until they
  67. 2:37betray the original purpose and
  68. 2:39eventually make the whole situation
  69. 2:41worse worsening the age-associated
  70. 2:44damage so by supplementing with the
  71. 2:46building blocks of glutathione we can
  72. 2:48make sure that our glutathione levels
  73. 2:50are well supported and importantly our
  74. 2:52body can actually regulate the levels of
  75. 2:54glutathione personally until there's
  76. 2:56long-term human safety data on liposomal
  77. 2:59glutathione i will not touch it so an
  78. 3:03argument can be made that supporting our
  79. 3:05levels of glutathione is a good idea
  80. 3:07that it can possibly make us more
  81. 3:09resilient against diseases so let's test
  82. 3:12that idea in 2001 there was a paper
  83. 3:15published on covert 19 patients it
  84. 3:17wanted to see whether supporting our
  85. 3:19metabolism would improve covert 19
  86. 3:21recovery it gave half of the patients a
  87. 3:24combination of supplements to support
  88. 3:25their metabolism and this included the
  89. 3:28building blocks of glutathione what they
  90. 3:30found is that the patients that took the
  91. 3:32combined metabolic activators recovered
  92. 3:34from covert 19 are whopping three days
  93. 3:37faster this is really exciting it backs
  94. 3:40up the idea that if we support our
  95. 3:42metabolism then hopefully we can be more
  96. 3:44resilient against diseases and in terms
  97. 3:47of lifespan extension we've got a robust
  98. 3:49paper from the interventions testing
  99. 3:51program showing that glycine
  100. 3:53supplementation it increased lifespan by
  101. 3:56four to six percent in both males and
  102. 3:59female mice and that leads us onto this
  103. 4:01new paper the new paper wanted to look
  104. 4:03at the combination of both glycine and
  105. 4:06neck not just glycine alone this study
  106. 4:09gave half of the mice placebo and the
  107. 4:11other half a combination of glycine and
  108. 4:14neck and importantly the mice used here
  109. 4:16were called black six mice this is
  110. 4:19important because black six mice are the
  111. 4:21most inbred strain of mice used in
  112. 4:24research so this is important we are not
  113. 4:27inbred so we can't always correlate
  114. 4:29these findings to humans and in this
  115. 4:31study only 32 mice were used so
  116. 4:34relatively small numbers but what we can
  117. 4:36see is that the mice who were receiving
  118. 4:38the glycine and neck supplements they
  119. 4:40increased their lifespan by 24
  120. 4:43and importantly this happened in both
  121. 4:45males and females we can see this
  122. 4:48increase quite clearly here in the graph
  123. 4:50now when i was reading the discussion of
  124. 4:52this paper a few crucial things popped
  125. 4:54out to me so from unpublished studies of
  126. 4:57mice in our lab we found that
  127. 4:58glutathione deficiency or lower levels
  128. 5:00of glutathione it tends to occur in the
  129. 5:03black six mice after approximately 65
  130. 5:06weeks of age so remember in humans the
  131. 5:09glutathione levels seemed to drop around
  132. 5:1145 years old therefore this paper
  133. 5:13supplemented the mice from the age of 65
  134. 5:16weeks for the rest of their natural life
  135. 5:18the other important point that popped
  136. 5:20out to me is that no studies have
  137. 5:22reported an increase of mammalian
  138. 5:24lifespan by supplementing with
  139. 5:26glutathione so again i don't want to be
  140. 5:29supplementing with glutathione because
  141. 5:30there's a lack of evidence that it
  142. 5:32actually works on the contrary
  143. 5:35supplementation of glutathione was
  144. 5:37actually found to accelerate aging and
  145. 5:39shorten lifespan in c elegans which is a
  146. 5:41type of worm because different organisms
  147. 5:44maintain different concentrations of
  148. 5:46glutathione providing extra glutathione
  149. 5:49is associated with risk of inducing
  150. 5:51replicative stress this is what we were
  151. 5:54talking about before we want to try and
  152. 5:56aim for that balance between oxidants
  153. 5:58and antioxidants so glycine and neck
  154. 6:00supplementation it avoids this problem
  155. 6:03because it allows the cells to auto
  156. 6:05regulate as in to maintain those levels
  157. 6:08to control the levels of glutathione
  158. 6:10glycine and neck supplementation it
  159. 6:12doesn't interfere with the cellular
  160. 6:14autoregulation and this is an important
  161. 6:17point to understand because the cellular
  162. 6:19requirements of glutathione in each
  163. 6:21organ is constantly and dynamically
  164. 6:23changing so again we don't want to be
  165. 6:26supplementing with liposomal glutathione
  166. 6:28because we don't have long-term safety
  167. 6:30data and there's no data so far that it
  168. 6:33actually improves health span or life
  169. 6:36span and the final thing that i want to
  170. 6:37mention about this study is its
  171. 6:39limitations so although this pilot
  172. 6:41extrapolatory study provides proof of
  173. 6:44concept that glycine and neck
  174. 6:46supplementation from a younger age can
  175. 6:48increase length of life this was done in
  176. 6:50a relatively small number of mice and
  177. 6:52the data is not reported in every organ
  178. 6:55in the body essentially we need larger
  179. 6:57trials and i'm really hoping that the
  180. 6:59interventions testing program trials the
  181. 7:01combination
  182. 7:02of glycine and neck we can see from the
  183. 7:04interventions testing program that
  184. 7:06glycine alone does seem to extend
  185. 7:08lifespan but maybe we'll get even
  186. 7:10greater benefits if we combined glycine
  187. 7:13and neck like this new paper is
  188. 7:15suggesting so what am i going to do in
  189. 7:17response to this new paper well to be
  190. 7:19honest it doesn't change anything for me
  191. 7:22i'm going to stick with my original plan
  192. 7:24to add in neck and either glycine or
  193. 7:27serine once i reach the age of 50 years
  194. 7:29old because remember our glutathione
  195. 7:31levels they appear to be fine up until
  196. 7:34the age of around 45 years old in terms
  197. 7:37of dosage i plan to take one and a half
  198. 7:39grams of both serine and neck but why
  199. 7:42did i choose serine instead of glycine
  200. 7:45well the human combined metabolic
  201. 7:47activator studies they used serine
  202. 7:50instead of glycine so serine is
  203. 7:52converted in the body to glycine but
  204. 7:55during this conversion it may help drive
  205. 7:57forward before late cycle so let's sum
  206. 8:00things up glutathione is a powerful
  207. 8:02antioxidant in the body but its levels
  208. 8:04appear to decline around the age of 45
  209. 8:07years old it looks like we can support
  210. 8:09our glutathione levels by taking the
  211. 8:11building blocks of glutathione so neck
  212. 8:14and either serine or glycine personally
  213. 8:17i will avoid liposomal glutathione
  214. 8:19because we don't have much evidence that
  215. 8:21it actually improves health and we don't
  216. 8:23have long-term safety data and overall i
  217. 8:26plan to take one and a half grams of
  218. 8:28neck and serene twice a day when i reach
  219. 8:31the age of 50 years old so please let me
  220. 8:34know in the comments section what did
  221. 8:36you think of this video and what are you
  222. 8:37going to do about supporting your
  223. 8:39glutathione levels are you going to wait
  224. 8:41for more data or are you going to start
  225. 8:43supplementing with neck and either
  226. 8:45serine or glycine a massive thank you to
  227. 8:47all of the patrons who support the
  228. 8:49channel and if you haven't already
  229. 8:51please check out my clinical trial
  230. 8:52fundraiser for rapamycin until next time
  231. 8:55thanks very much
