- 0:00Breathe in for four.
- 0:02[sighs]
- 0:12And you do that lip trill as long as you
- 0:14can until you start to feel the sides of
- 0:16the body and the sides of the ribs kind
- 0:18of grabbing at YOU AND SAYING, "WE DON'T
- 0:20HAVE ANY MORE AIR." THIS IS AN exercise
- 0:22to expand your breath capacity, expand
- 0:25your lung capacity, and basically show
- 0:27you that you don't need as much air as
- 0:31you think you do because we're going to
- 0:32let some air out first. Find the natural
- 0:35waist underneath the ribs on each side
- 0:38and above the pelvis. Take a 360° breath
- 0:43into our hand. Not just the belly, not
- 0:45just the ribs, but also the back. We're
- 0:47going to inhale for a count of four.
- 0:50We're going to hold that breath for a
- 0:52count of four. We're going to let four
- 0:54counts of breath out before we start a
- 0:57lip trill. You can progress that
- 0:59exercise to a released tongue trill like
- 1:02this.
- 1:04That will actually help you gauge your
- 1:06breath better than the lip trill does.
- 1:08So again, we're in for four. Find that
- 1:11natural waist. [sighs]
- 1:21and try not to let everything collapse.
- 1:25Once you've progressed through some
- 1:26tongue trills, we're going to do some
- 1:27vocalizing on an e vowel because the e
- 1:29vowel requires the least amount of air.
- 1:32[sighs]
- 1:38[singing]
- 1:44>> [singing]
- 1:49>> and hold the last one [gasps] until you
- 1:52can't hold it anymore. Getting all of
- 1:55these muscles around the tube of the
- 1:59diaphragm to work, function, support,
- 2:02activate all those things. Remember,
- 2:05muscle activation is not muscle tension.
- 2:08You are going to feel something. You are
- 2:11going to have sensation.
- 2:14You want it to be buoyant and not tense.
- 2:17Muscle activation is outward. Muscle
- 2:20tension is inward.
