My Son Inherited Our $1.5M House, I Got a Rotting Lake Cabin — Then I Unlocked the Door and Froze — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00My name is Christine Carver. I am 68
- 0:03years old. 18 days after I buried my
- 0:05husband, I sat in a Grand Rapids
- 0:07lawyer's office and found out what 44
- 0:10years of marriage was worth on paper.
- 0:13Our house in Ada went to my son. Four
- 0:16bedrooms, heated garage, $1.5 million. I
- 0:20got a cabin, 780 square ft on a lake 3
- 0:24hours north with a sagging roof and a
- 0:26road the county stops plowing on
- 0:28November 30th.
- 0:29My son laughed out loud. Then he said
- 0:32it, "You'll be dead before winter
- 0:34anyway." So I packed one suitcase and
- 0:38drove up alone. Something was waiting on
- 0:40the kitchen table of that cabin. It had
- 0:43been sitting there since April, 2 months
- 0:45before he died. But what was inside it
- 0:48had been waiting 27 years. And that
- 0:52thing my son said in the lawyer's office
- 0:55was not a joke. I did not learn what it
- 0:58actually was until October. Welcome back
- 1:01to Alpha Mom Stories. This is where
- 1:03mothers who were counted out get the
- 1:06last word. Drop a comment and be sure to
- 1:08subscribe. I spent 35 years in a
- 1:11basement. That is not a complaint. The
- 1:14local history and genealogy room at the
- 1:16Grand Rapids Public Library is in the
- 1:18basement, and I ran it from 1996 until I
- 1:21retired on Friday, June 28th, 2019.
- 1:26Before that, I was the clerk who refiled
- 1:28the microfilm. I started in November of
- 1:301983, 6 weeks pregnant and terrified.
- 1:34People came to me with a name and a
- 1:36rumor. I gave them back a chain of
- 1:38title. For nine of those years, I also
- 1:41volunteered for the Kent County
- 1:43Historical Society, indexing grand tour
- 1:46and grantee books by hand. Thousands of
- 1:49deeds. I could read a tract index the
- 1:52way some women read a recipe. I had one
- 1:55rule and I said it out loud to every
- 1:57intern. Read the original. A summary is
- 2:00somebody else's opinion. Here is the
- 2:02part that still makes my jaw tighten. I
- 2:05read 9,000 deeds that belong to
- 2:07strangers.
- 2:09The papers on Walter's side of the
- 2:11family I let Walter keep. That was the
- 2:14arrangement. His father's land, his
- 2:16father's files, his business. Walter
- 2:19Carver installed furnaces for 31 years.
- 2:22We married on August 14th, 1982. He was
- 2:2627 and I was 24 and he had a laugh you
- 2:29could hear through a closed door. We
- 2:31bought the house on July 9th, 2004 for
- 2:35$585,000.
- 2:37He was diagnosed on Monday, January
- 2:4012th, 2026.
- 2:42Pancreatic. He died on Sunday, June
- 2:4521st. In April, when he could still
- 2:47drive, he went up to the cabin alone for
- 2:494 days. He said he was closing it for
- 2:52good. I believed him. We buried him on
- 2:54Friday, June 26th. My son Preston is 42.
- 2:58He stood at the front in a charcoal suit
- 3:01and thank people for coming and he was
- 3:03good at it. He's always been good at
- 3:04rooms. His wife Avette is 39. She is an
- 3:08interior designer and she came to the
- 3:10funeral with a legal pad. I saw the top
- 3:12sheet when she set her purse down. It
- 3:14said clear out. Seven bullet points. One
- 3:17of them said mom's room. Walter's will
- 3:20named Preston as personal
- 3:21representative. He signed it on
- 3:23Thursday, March 14th, 2024 at Bosworth
- 3:26and Lane. He told me it was paperwork
- 3:28and he would be an hour. Preston had the
- 3:31death certificate ordered before the
- 3:33casket was closed. Eight certified
- 3:35copies. He called that efficient. At the
- 3:38lunchon, Ivette put her hand on my arm
- 3:40and said the sentence people say, "You
- 3:43don't have to think about any of this,
- 3:44Mom." I was grateful for about 9 days. I
- 3:49was genuinely grateful that somebody
- 3:51else was carrying the folder. The last
- 3:54real conversation I had with Walter was
- 3:56in a hospital room on the Thursday
- 3:58before he died. He was drifting in and
- 4:00out. His hands kept moving like he was
- 4:03sorting something. He said, "The green
- 4:05box on the table." I said, "Which table,
- 4:08honey?" He said the word up or maybe
- 4:10north.
- 4:12His voice was gone by then. I thought he
- 4:14meant the fuse box in our basement. It
- 4:17was green metal and he had been after me
- 4:19for a year to label the breakers. I told
- 4:22him I would take care of it. Then I went
- 4:24and got coffee and when I came back he
- 4:26was asleep. I did not think about that
- 4:28sentence again for 9 weeks. That is the
- 4:30one thing I would take back. The will
- 4:33was read on Tuesday, July 14th, at 2:00
- 4:36in the afternoon. Bosworth and Lane has
- 4:38a walnut table and they set out three
- 4:41glasses of water. Nobody drank any.
- 4:43Randall Bosworth read it straight
- 4:45through. The house at 4180 Tory Pine
- 4:48Court in Ada together with its contents
- 4:51was a specific device to Preston Andrew
- 4:54Carver. Preston nodded slowly the way
- 4:57men nod when they are trying to look
- 4:58solemn about winning. Then Bosworth read
- 5:01my part. To my wife Christine Anne
- 5:04Carver, I devised the parcel in Osiggo
- 5:08County, commonly known as the Sawmill
- 5:11Trail property. together with all oil,
- 5:14gas, and mineral interests I own in
- 5:16Otago County. Ivette's head came up on
- 5:19the word mineral. Preston laughed. Not a
- 5:22big laugh. A short one through the nose,
- 5:24the kind you make when a child says
- 5:26something charming. Mineral interests,
- 5:29he said. Dad and his dirt. Bosworth kept
- 5:32reading. The residue $61,340
- 5:36in a credit union account split evenly
- 5:38between us. That was all of it. 44 years
- 5:42in about four minutes. In the hallway,
- 5:44Preston pushed the elevator button. Mom,
- 5:47be realistic. That place has a hand pump
- 5:49and a $60,000 roof problem. I said the
- 5:53taxable value was $47,900.
- 5:57Even better. Then he looked at me, still
- 5:59half smiling, and he said it. You'll be
- 6:02dead before winter anyway. I bet
- 6:05Preston.
- 6:07She said it the way you say a dog's name
- 6:09when guests are over. I did not answer
- 6:11him.
- 6:13I stood there thinking about one thing,
- 6:15and it was not the insult. It was that
- 6:17clause. All oil, gas, and mineral
- 6:20interests I own in Oiggo County. Walter
- 6:23wrote grocery lists in three-letter
- 6:25abbreviations. He would not have paid a
- 6:27lawyer to draft a clause for something
- 6:29that did not exist. I need to tell you
- 6:32why my son talks to me that way. Because
- 6:34it did not start at that elevator. It
- 6:37started in April of 2009. Preston was
- 6:4025. He had found a foreclosed forplex on
- 6:43quite avenue. Brick, four units a roof
- 6:46with maybe 6 years left. The bank wanted
- 6:49co-signers on a $185,000
- 6:52note. He came to our kitchen with a
- 6:54folder and a spreadsheet. And I will say
- 6:57this for him, the spreadsheet was good.
- 6:59Walter said yes in about 90 seconds.
- 7:02Walter said yes to everything Preston
- 7:05ever asked. I said no. I had spent all
- 7:08of 2008 watching the Kent County Grtor
- 7:12index thicken with sheriff's deeds 6080
- 7:16a week. I typed the names of people who
- 7:18had done nothing wrong except sign in a
- 7:21good year. I knew what leverage looks
- 7:23like from underneath. Walter looked at
- 7:26me across the table and then he told our
- 7:28son, "No, that forplex sold in June of
- 7:322021 for $742,000.
- 7:37Preston has a screenshot of the closing
- 7:39statement on his phone. He showed it to
- 7:41me at Easter to Walter on the 4th of
- 7:43July and to his cousin at a wedding in
- 7:46Holland. He has a line he uses. My
- 7:49mother made one financial decision in
- 7:51her life and she got it exactly
- 7:53backwards. He said it at Christmas of
- 7:552025. Walter was down to 151bs and had
- 8:00stopped eating solid food. He was
- 8:02sitting right there in the recliner.
- 8:05Walter set his cup down. He did not
- 8:07argue. He looked at Preston a long
- 8:10moment, then at me, and something moved
- 8:12across his face that I could not read. I
- 8:15read it in October.
- 8:17On Tuesday, July 21st, I came home from
- 8:19physical therapy, and my key did not
- 8:22work. I had my right hip replaced in
- 8:242023. I go twice a week, and they both
- 8:27knew it. Iette was on the front steps
- 8:29with a coffee. She stood up when she saw
- 8:31me. Oh, mom, we had it rekeyed. There's
- 8:35been breakins on Canap. There had not
- 8:37been break-ins on Canap. I checked the
- 8:40sheriff's log that night because that is
- 8:42what 35 years of reference work does to
- 8:44a person. She walked me in like a guest.
- 8:48My reading chair was already in the
- 8:50garage. On the kitchen island was an
- 8:53invoice from a showroom in Birmingham.
- 8:55Sofa, two chairs, dining set, rug
- 8:58lighting. $38,000.
- 9:00The order date was May 12th, 2026.
- 9:04Walter died on June 24th. I did the
- 9:07arithmetic twice because I did not want
- 9:09to be the kind of woman who does that
- 9:10arithmetic. 6 weeks. She furnished the
- 9:14house 6 weeks before he died. I want to
- 9:16be fair to Evette because fair is the
- 9:18only weapon I have that never jams. In
- 9:222011, her mother lost a house in
- 9:24Wyoming, Michigan in a probate fight
- 9:26with a stepmother nobody in the family
- 9:28had taken seriously. The stepmother had
- 9:31a deed. Ivette's mother had a memory of
- 9:34a promise. Ivette was 24 and she has
- 9:37told me twice that her mother slept in a
- 9:39Buick Lasaber for 11 nights that August.
- 9:42So Ivet moves first, always, locks
- 9:45contracts, orders keys. She decided a
- 9:49long time ago that she would never again
- 9:51be the person standing on a porch with a
- 9:54story instead of a document. I
- 9:57understood her. That did not make her
- 9:59less dangerous.
- 10:012 days later, my neighbor Deline Okoro
- 10:04came across the lawn with a casserole.
- 10:06Deline is 71 and has lived on to pine
- 10:09since it was gravel. She asked how I was
- 10:12sleeping. Iette answered for me. She was
- 10:154 feet away holding a paint deck and she
- 10:17said it in the voice you use for a small
- 10:19child in a waiting room.
- 10:22She's not doing well since dad passed. I
- 10:25was right there. I had a casserole dish
- 10:27in my hands. Deline looked at me. I
- 10:30looked at the hostas. That night,
- 10:32Preston sat down across from me at the
- 10:34kitchen table, folded his hands, and
- 10:37gave me a date. September 1st, Mom. The
- 10:40contractors need the house empty. I
- 10:43asked where he thought I was going to
- 10:45live. He said, "You've got the cabin.
- 10:47Here are my numbers. My library pension
- 10:50is 1,214
- 10:53a month. Social Security is 976,
- 10:58$2,190
- 10:59total. There was not a onebedroom in ADA
- 11:02under $1,900 a month. I checked that
- 11:06night sitting in a garage next to my own
- 11:08reading chair. Then I did what I always
- 11:10do when a problem will not resolve. I
- 11:13went and looked at the original. I
- 11:15pulled Walter's copy of the will out of
- 11:17the folder Preston had left on the
- 11:19counter and I read that clause again.
- 11:22All oil, gas, and mineral interests I
- 11:25own in Oiggo County. And underneath the
- 11:29last page, paperclipipped, was something
- 11:31Bosworth had not read out loud. A
- 11:34photocopy of a warranty deed from 1968.
- 11:37I did not understand it yet, but I
- 11:40recognized the shape of the sentence in
- 11:41the middle of it because I had read that
- 11:43shape 9,000 times. I have a tan hard
- 11:46shell suitcase 22 in bought in 1998 for
- 11:50a trip to Machinak Island. It has a
- 11:52scuff on one corner from a ferry ramp.
- 11:55That is what I packed. Seven changes of
- 11:58clothes, my blood pressure pills, the
- 12:01lighted magnifier I used for microfilm,
- 12:04which the library let me keep. a
- 12:06flashlight with no batteries because I
- 12:08could not find any and told myself I
- 12:10would buy some in Gaylord. I left the
- 12:13good china. I left the reading chair in
- 12:16the garage and I thought about that
- 12:17chair for 4 seconds and let it go. I
- 12:20left Ada at 1:30 on Saturday, August
- 12:232010, 2026.
- 12:26It is 176 miles from my driveway to
- 12:30Sawmill Trail, US 131 north through Big
- 12:33Rapids, through Cadillac, through the
- 12:35park where the pines close in and the
- 12:37radio stations drop out. 3 hours and 10
- 12:40minutes with one stop. 8 days earlier
- 12:44would have been our 44th anniversary. I
- 12:46did not cry about it in the car. I cried
- 12:49at a rest stop near Manton, which is
- 12:51somehow worse. The turnoff County Road
- 12:53612 comes up fast. There is a green sign
- 12:56at the head of Sawmill Trail, bolted to
- 12:59a cedar post older than my marriage.
- 13:02Seasonal road, not maintained, November
- 13:0630th through April 1st. I got there at
- 13:084:40. The lake was flat and the light
- 13:11was that long gold. You only get up
- 13:13there in late August. The cabin looked
- 13:16worse than I remembered. Roof sagging
- 13:18over the porch. One shutter gone. I took
- 13:21the key off Walter's ring. brass with a
- 13:24red plastic tag. The lock was stiff. I
- 13:27had to lean on it with my shoulder and
- 13:29then the door swung in. The first thing
- 13:32was the smell. Cold wood smoke, damp
- 13:35pine, 40 years of the same wool blanket.
- 13:39The second thing was the sound. There is
- 13:41a propane wall furnace in that main room
- 13:44put in around 1974.
- 13:46When it lights, it clicks three times.
- 13:48First click, click, click, then a soft
- 13:53wump. I turned the knob out of habit
- 13:55before I set the suitcase down. Three
- 13:58clicks, then the flame. 780 square ft.
- 14:02One main room, a bedroom, a bathroom
- 14:04with tile, Ambrose Carver, laid in 1958.
- 14:08Three mouse traps along the baseboard,
- 14:10all sprung, all empty. And dust, the
- 14:14gray felt kind, on every flat surface in
- 14:17that house. every surface but one. The
- 14:20kitchen table is pine six feet long with
- 14:22a burn ring from a lantern. It was
- 14:24clean. Not clean like last week. Clean
- 14:27like somebody wiped it 4 months ago and
- 14:29nothing had happened in that room since.
- 14:31In the middle of it sat a green metal
- 14:34file box. I knew that box.
- 14:37It had lived under the workbench in our
- 14:39Ada basement for as long as I had known
- 14:41Walter. Army green one dented corner. On
- 14:45the lid was a strip of masking tape. And
- 14:48on the tape in my husband's block
- 14:49capitals in the carpenters's pencil he
- 14:52used for everything. C40 Audi sego.
- 14:56Beside it lay a sandwich bag with two AA
- 14:59batteries and a torn index card
- 15:01underneath for the flashlight. I did not
- 15:04open it. I stood in that doorway and my
- 15:07hands started shaking and I put them
- 15:09flat against the frame and they would
- 15:11not stop. He had known I would come. He
- 15:14had known I would not have batteries. He
- 15:16had been in that room in April dying
- 15:18wiping a table. I brought in the
- 15:20suitcase. I made up the bed. I ate a
- 15:23sleeve of crackers at the counter. I did
- 15:25not touch that box until morning. And I
- 15:28think I know why. I had been married to
- 15:31whatever was inside it for 44 years and
- 15:34never once been introduced. I opened it
- 15:37Sunday morning, August 23rd, with coffee
- 15:39at that same table. Everything inside
- 15:42was in order. Walter organized things
- 15:44the way he wired a furnace correctly and
- 15:46without explanation. Taped inside the
- 15:49lid was an index card. Three lines,
- 15:51three sets of numbers. L118 P233, L214,
- 15:56P501, L412, P88. Liieber and Paige.
- 16:01Recording references. A librarian
- 16:03shorthand written by a furnace man. The
- 16:06first folder held a certified copy of a
- 16:08warranty deed dated November 12th, 1968.
- 16:11The second held a two-page document
- 16:14called notice of claim of interest
- 16:15recorded June 8th, 1987. The stamp said
- 16:19the filing fee was $9. The third held a
- 16:22form from Sturgeon Ridge Energy out of
- 16:24Calasa. Division order signed by Walter,
- 16:28dated 2011, stamped diagonally in purple
- 16:31ink. Title curative required returned.
- 16:34And then there was the fourth folder,
- 16:36and it was the thick one. carbon copies,
- 16:39letters he had typed and mailed and kept
- 16:41a copy of. The first was dated March
- 16:449th, 2000.
- 16:47The last was dated March 12th, 2026,
- 16:50which was 9 weeks after they told him he
- 16:52had 4 to 6 months. Every single one was
- 16:55written in the second week of March. I
- 16:57counted them twice sitting there with my
- 16:59coffee going cold. 27 letters, 27
- 17:03marches. I had made him breakfast on
- 17:06every one of those mornings. I did not
- 17:08yet understand what suspense meant or
- 17:11what a division order was for. I am a
- 17:14records person, not an oil person. But I
- 17:17have spent my life looking at the shape
- 17:19of a file. And the shape of that file
- 17:21was a man asking the same question once
- 17:24a year for 27 years and never once
- 17:28getting an answer he could use. I read
- 17:31the 1968 deed the way I would read one
- 17:34for a patron slowly out loud from the
- 17:37top. Ambrose John Carver. My
- 17:40father-in-law, born April 2nd, 1921,
- 17:42died January 8th, 1980. I met him twice
- 17:46both times before Walter and I were
- 17:47married. He bought timber between 1949
- 17:51and 1968. He bought and resold 14
- 17:54parcels across Utgo and Antrum counties.
- 17:57And he was known in Gaylord as a man who
- 17:59overpaid for scrub and slept fine. On
- 18:02November 12th, 1968, he sold 200 acres
- 18:06of surface to KCSA Timber and Land
- 18:09Company. Liber 214, page 501. And in the
- 18:13middle of the granting clause in the
- 18:15same typewriter face as everything
- 18:17around it, sat this, accepting and
- 18:20reserving unto the grantor his heirs,
- 18:23and assigns all oil, gas, and other
- 18:25minerals. I have read that sentence or
- 18:28one shaped like it thousands of times. I
- 18:31have explained it at that reference desk
- 18:33to farmers, to widows, to a man who
- 18:36wanted to know why a company could put a
- 18:38well pad on land he had paid for.
- 18:40Surface and minerals are two different
- 18:43pieces of property. You can sell one and
- 18:45keep the other. Once you split them,
- 18:47they stay split sometimes for a century,
- 18:50and the paper trail goes two separate
- 18:52directions. Ambrose sold the top and
- 18:55kept the bottom.
- 18:5714 times he kept one piece of surface
- 19:00for himself. 38 and 610 acres on the
- 19:03lake with 310 ft of frontage and a cabin
- 19:07he built by hand in 1958.
- 19:09I put down the deed and looked around
- 19:11that ugly little room. I had been told I
- 19:14inherited a shack. What I had actually
- 19:17inherited was 1180 net mineral acres in
- 19:20the northern lower peninsula of Michigan
- 19:22in a shack. Preston called that same
- 19:25afternoon a little after 4, Sunday,
- 19:28August 23rd. He was warm. That is the
- 19:31part people never believe. He asked
- 19:34about my hip and told me about my
- 19:35granddaughter's volleyball. Then he
- 19:37asked his question and he asked it twice
- 19:3910 minutes apart in two different
- 19:41costumes. Did you find any of dad's
- 19:43stuff up there? I said there were a lot
- 19:46of his things up here. Right. But like
- 19:48paperwork, files. He was always
- 19:51squirreling stuff away. I said I would
- 19:54let him know. He let a pause go by. Then
- 19:57his voice changed to the one he uses at
- 19:59closings. Mom, I'm going to be straight
- 20:02with you. There's no plow on that road
- 20:04after November 30th. It's a seasonal
- 20:07road. I looked it up. If you fall in
- 20:09January, nobody finds you until April. I
- 20:12said I was aware. So, be realistic.
- 20:15You'll be dead before winter anyway. I'm
- 20:17not being cruel. I'm being practical.
- 20:20Here is the thing. In July, I thought
- 20:23that sentence was cruelty. Sitting at
- 20:26that table with the box in front of me,
- 20:28I heard something else in it. He had
- 20:31looked up the road. He had looked up
- 20:33when the county stops maintaining it.
- 20:35That is not something you do to be mean
- 20:38at an elevator. That is research. I
- 20:41said, "I'm going to write down today's
- 20:43date." He laughed and said, "Sure, Mom.
- 20:47If you have ever stood in a room while
- 20:48your own child talks about you in the
- 20:50third person, you know how heavy the
- 20:52quiet gets afterward.
- 20:55Type the word here in the comments so I
- 20:58know you are still sitting with me and
- 20:59hit subscribe because what happens in
- 21:01the next 7 weeks is the reason I am
- 21:03telling anyone at all. Tuesday, August
- 21:0625, I drove into Gaylord. The Oiggo
- 21:09County Register of Deeds is at 2125 West
- 21:12Main Street in the courthouse. I have
- 21:14been in 83 county recording offices. I
- 21:17know what the counter smells like. The
- 21:19clerk was polite and clear. They do not
- 21:22do searches for you. They keep the
- 21:24indexes and the images back to March
- 21:265th, 1864, and you are welcome to sit
- 21:29down and work. I said that would be
- 21:31fine. It took me 4 hours and 10 minutes.
- 21:34I pulled the granter index for Carver
- 21:36Ambrose J. I found the 1954 purchase at
- 21:40Liieber 118, page 233. I found the 1968
- 21:45sale at Liber 214, page 501, with the
- 21:48reservation. Then I looked for what
- 21:50should come next. When a man dies owning
- 21:53something, a probate court signs an
- 21:55order and somebody records that order so
- 21:57the world can see where the property
- 21:59went. Seeigo County probate file 80147.
- 22:04Estate of Ambrose John Carver, order of
- 22:07assignment closed September 15th, 1980.
- 22:10I read every line of it three times. It
- 22:13assigned the 38 and 6/10 acres to
- 22:15Walter. It assigned a truck, a boat, and
- 22:18$1,100.
- 22:19It did not say one word about oil, gas,
- 22:22or minerals. Not one word. Nobody in
- 22:251980 thought scrub land in Oiggo County
- 22:28had anything under it. So, nobody
- 22:30inventoried it. So, no order covered it.
- 22:33So, nothing was ever recorded. 47 pages
- 22:36of copies at $1 a page. three
- 22:39certifications at $5 each, $62.
- 22:43I carried it out to the car and sat in
- 22:45the parking lot and said it out loud to
- 22:47nobody. On paper, in the county's own
- 22:50books, those mineral rights still belong
- 22:52to a man who died in January of 1980.
- 22:56The next morning, Wednesday the 26th, I
- 22:58called the number on the Sturgeon Ridge
- 23:00letterhead. I got a woman named Sylvia
- 23:03Bonner, division order analyst. She has
- 23:06that voice people get when they have
- 23:08explained the same thing 4,000 times and
- 23:11have decided not to be short about it. I
- 23:14gave her the well permit number off one
- 23:16of Walter's letters. 45,231.
- 23:21I heard typing. Okay. She said that
- 23:25interest is in suspense.
- 23:27I asked her what that meant. She said a
- 23:29suspense account is where an operator
- 23:31parks money it owes but cannot safely
- 23:33pay. Bad address. No signed division
- 23:36order, no W9 or the one that applied
- 23:39here. Questionable title. I asked how
- 23:42much was in it. Ma'am, I can't tell you
- 23:44that. You're not a confirmed owner of
- 23:47record. I sat down on the porchstep. She
- 23:50walked me through it without hurrying.
- 23:52To get paid, I needed three things. A
- 23:55recorded instrument that cured the gap
- 23:57in the chain of title, a signed division
- 24:00order, a signed W9.
- 24:04I asked, "How long after that? Four to
- 24:07six weeks from when we have a complete
- 24:09packet and then it goes into the next
- 24:11monthly run. Not sooner. I don't want to
- 24:13promise you sooner." I said, "I
- 24:15understood." Then she went quiet for a
- 24:18second and her voice came off the
- 24:20script. "Mrs. Carver, are you related to
- 24:23the gentleman who writes us every
- 24:25March?" I had to hold the phone away
- 24:27from my face for a moment. I said, "That
- 24:30was my husband." She said, "Oh." And
- 24:33then, oh honey, that night I went back
- 24:36through the box a third time because
- 24:38that is what you do when a stranger has
- 24:40just called your dead husband a
- 24:42gentleman. I unfolded the notice of
- 24:44claim of interest, the one recorded June
- 24:478th, 1987. Liber 412, page 88, two pages
- 24:52typed on Walter's mother's Smith Corona.
- 24:55I would bet money on it.
- 24:57It said that Walter Carver, sole
- 24:59surviving heir of Ambrose John Carver,
- 25:01claimed the oil and gas interests
- 25:03reserved in Liber 214, page 501, and
- 25:06intended to preserve them. I know that
- 25:09document. Michigan has a law from 1963,
- 25:12Act 42, the Dormant Minerals Act. If a
- 25:16severed oil and gas interest sits 20
- 25:18years with nothing happening, no
- 25:20drilling, no production, no recorded
- 25:23transfer, no notice filed, it reverts to
- 25:26whoever owns the surface. Use it or lose
- 25:29it. 1968 + 20 is 1988. He filed in June
- 25:35of 1987, 17 months before the clock ran
- 25:38out. My husband, 32 years old, a furnace
- 25:41installer with a high school diploma,
- 25:44drove to Gaylord on a Monday and paid $9
- 25:47to save something he could not see. And
- 25:49folded inside those two pages was a
- 25:52third sheet, lined paper torn from a
- 25:54legal pad in his handwriting. It was
- 25:57dated April 13, 2026, page one. He wrote
- 26:01it plain the way he talked. He wrote
- 26:03that the box was his father's
- 26:05reservation and everything that came
- 26:07after it. That the interest had never
- 26:10reverted because after 1987 the wells
- 26:12started and production keeps it alive on
- 26:15its own. That gas started flowing from
- 26:17the Antrum in March of 1999.
- 26:20That the money had been acrewing ever
- 26:22since and had never once been paid
- 26:24because on the county's books the owner
- 26:26was still a dead man. He wrote that he
- 26:29had tried three times. In 2004, they
- 26:32wanted a probate order. In 2011, they
- 26:35sent a division order and he signed it
- 26:37and sent it back and they returned. It's
- 26:39stamped. In 2019, he was told he needed
- 26:42something called an order of assignment
- 26:45and he did not know what that was. And
- 26:47he was embarrassed to ask twice. Then he
- 26:50wrote the sentence, "I have thought
- 26:52about every day since. Everything in
- 26:54this box is real. It's just not
- 26:56finished." And at the bottom of the
- 26:58page, in smaller letters, crowded
- 27:00against the edge, page two is somewhere
- 27:03else.
- 27:05You'll find it. You're better at this
- 27:07than I ever was. I sat at that table
- 27:10until 2 in the morning with a dead
- 27:12flashlight and two AA batteries I had
- 27:14not put in yet. It got down to 48° that
- 27:18night, which is normal for late August
- 27:20up there, and still a shock when you are
- 27:22used to central air. In the morning, I
- 27:24opened the suitcase properly for the
- 27:26first time, not to grab a shirt off the
- 27:28top to unpack. Underneath the clothes
- 27:32was the retirement pin the library gave
- 27:34me in 2019. A little brass book on a
- 27:37card. Walter's reading glasses. The
- 27:40drugstore kind one arm bent from where
- 27:42he sat on them. A box of paper clips
- 27:45because apparently I am the woman who
- 27:47packs paper clips for a crisis. I put
- 27:49the pin on the window sill above the
- 27:51sink. It is still there.
- 27:53Margot Tilllet drove up on Wednesday,
- 27:56September 2nd. Margot is 70 and worked
- 27:59the reference desk beside me for 22
- 28:01years and does not knock. She brought a
- 28:041500 W space heater, two quarts of
- 28:06chicken soup, and a bag of batteries,
- 28:08which made me laugh until I had to sit
- 28:10down. She read page one at the kitchen
- 28:12table with her glasses pushed up on her
- 28:14forehead. Then she asked the question,
- 28:16"I imagine you have been asking for 10
- 28:19minutes." Chris, why didn't he tell you?
- 28:23I said, I did not know yet. He had 27
- 28:26years. I said, I know how many he had. I
- 28:30counted them. She let it go, which is
- 28:33why she is my friend. We put the
- 28:36batteries in the flashlight. We walked
- 28:38down to the water at dusk and she said
- 28:40the cabin was ugly and the lake was not.
- 28:43And both things were true. Before she
- 28:45left, she stood in the doorway with her
- 28:47keys and said, "Whatever's in the second
- 28:50page, you're going to want somebody in
- 28:52the room. I said I would call her. I did
- 28:54not, and I have apologized for it
- 28:56since." On Thursday, September 3rd, I
- 29:00bet posted a photo album, 41 pictures.
- 29:05Before and after shots of the Ada House,
- 29:07the sofa I had never sat on the dining
- 29:09set from the $38,000
- 29:12invoice. The album was titled Bringing
- 29:15the Family Home Back to Life. Delphine
- 29:18Okoro's daughter sent me the
- 29:19screenshots. Deline does not use a
- 29:22computer, but she talks. In the
- 29:24comments, a woman from their church
- 29:26asked sweetly and publicly how Preston's
- 29:28mother was holding up. Ivette answered
- 29:31in two sentences. She's not doing well
- 29:33since dad passed. She actually signed
- 29:36herself off the deed years ago, so this
- 29:38is all being handled properly. I want to
- 29:41be precise about that because precision
- 29:43is the only thing I have ever been good
- 29:45at. On Thursday, May 20, 2021, Walter
- 29:49refinanced the house. $735,000
- 29:5430-year fixed 2 and 58%.
- 29:57It was a good loan. He was proud of it.
- 30:00I had been retired 23 months. I had no
- 30:03employment income to document. The
- 30:05lender wanted the loan and the title in
- 30:07the borrower's name alone. And the title
- 30:10company slid a quit claim deed across
- 30:12the table at closing with a little
- 30:14sticky arrow on it. I signed where the
- 30:17arrow was. 11 seconds maybe. That is
- 30:20what a quit claim deed is. It is a woman
- 30:23with no pay stubs signing where the
- 30:25arrow is so her husband can get a better
- 30:28rate. It is not a woman signing herself
- 30:30out of her own house. I did not correct
- 30:33her online. I did not comment. I did not
- 30:36call. I saved the screenshots with the
- 30:39timestamps and I put them in a folder on
- 30:41my phone and I named the folder October.
- 30:44On Saturday the 5th, the furnace clicked
- 30:46three times and then did nothing. No
- 30:49wump, just the clicking patient and
- 30:52stupid over and over. A man from a
- 30:54propane outfit in Gaylord came Monday
- 30:56afternoon and had the cover off in 90
- 30:59seconds. Bad regulator. $310 parts and
- 31:03labor. And he could not do it until
- 31:05Thursday.
- 31:07Sit with my arithmetic a second because
- 31:09this is the part people skip. $2,190
- 31:13a month coming in. 62 at the register of
- 31:16deeds, 310 for the regulator, 41 in gas
- 31:20driving to Gaylord, and somewhere ahead
- 31:22of me, a lawyer I had not hired for a
- 31:24price I had not been quoted. I cooked on
- 31:27the wood stove that week and burned the
- 31:29first two things I tried. At night, I
- 31:32read the letters and order all 27. They
- 31:34are boring. That is what killed me. Same
- 31:37salutation, same reference line, same
- 31:39closing. Then I got to the one dated
- 31:42March 14th, 2019. Third paragraph. My
- 31:46wife works in the local history
- 31:47department at the library downtown. She
- 31:50says what I need is called an order of
- 31:52assignment. I am still working on
- 31:54getting one. I put the letter down.
- 31:56March of 2019. He came to my desk on a
- 31:59Thursday, the 21st, and stood there with
- 32:01his hat in his hand like a patron. He
- 32:04asked me how a person fixes a break in a
- 32:06chain of title. I gave him a two-page
- 32:08handout. I gave him the name of a title
- 32:10company in Cadillac. I told him to come
- 32:13back if he got stuck. My mother went
- 32:15into hospice that same week. She died on
- 32:18April 18th. He never came back and I
- 32:21never asked. A silver pickup came down
- 32:24Sawmill Trail on Friday, September 11th
- 32:27at about 10 in the morning. The man who
- 32:29got out was around my age. Canvas,
- 32:31jacket, clean boots. The kind of clean
- 32:33boots that have never been in mud. He
- 32:36had a business card out before he
- 32:37reached the porch. Gordon Voss, Voss
- 32:40Land Services, Gaylord, Michigan,
- 32:43Mineral Acquisition and Title Research.
- 32:45He was pleasant. He admired the lake. He
- 32:48said he had known Ambrose Carver's name
- 32:50for a long time and asked whether I was
- 32:53Walter's widow. Then he sat down on my
- 32:55porch step uninvited and made me an
- 32:57offer. $47,500
- 33:01for the entire mineral estate.
- 33:04All of it. All 14 parcels. Cash closing
- 33:08in 10 days. He would pay the recording
- 33:10fees himself. I asked him how he knew
- 33:13there were 14 parcels. He smiled and
- 33:16said he does this for a living. I said I
- 33:18would need to think about it. And that
- 33:20is when he said the thing he said three
- 33:22times that fall. Mrs. Carver, I'll be
- 33:25honest with you. Nobody's ever going to
- 33:27pay you for dirt you can't see. He left
- 33:30the offer letter on the step under a
- 33:32rock because the wind was coming up. I
- 33:34did not read it right away. I went
- 33:36inside and opened the box and went
- 33:38through the fourth folder until I found
- 33:40what my hands already knew was in there.
- 33:42A letter dated October of 2013 on the
- 33:45same creamtock with the same green logo
- 33:48in the corner. Voss Land Services, an
- 33:51unsolicited offer to purchase the Carver
- 33:53mineral interests, $18,500.
- 33:58Walter had written one word across the
- 34:00top in carpenters's pencil. No, I called
- 34:03my son that afternoon. I did not accuse
- 34:05him of anything. I have found you learn
- 34:08more if you sound tired. I said a man
- 34:10named Voss had come to the cabin. There
- 34:13was a pause about a second and a half
- 34:15long. Then Preston said, "Oh, Gordy.
- 34:19Yeah, he's a friend. I asked him to look
- 34:21at it as a favor to you, Mom." I asked
- 34:24how long he had known him. Since 18. He
- 34:27brought me a deal in Kolkasa.
- 34:29So that is the shape of it. Voss had
- 34:32been watching that parcel since 2013. He
- 34:35pulled the Oiggo tracked index on the
- 34:37Carver name once a quarter for 13 years,
- 34:40waiting for something to move. What
- 34:43moved was a death certificate. Then
- 34:45Preston said the thing that changed the
- 34:47color of the whole summer. He got
- 34:49impatient with me. That is his tell. He
- 34:52said, "Look, I told Gordy months ago
- 34:54there's no rush on this. I said she's
- 34:5668. She's got a bad hip. She's going to
- 34:59be up there alone on a road nobody
- 35:01plows.
- 35:03You'll be dead before winter anyway. I
- 35:05told him to be patient. Then quickly, in
- 35:08the voice of a man realizing the
- 35:09microphone is on, I didn't mean it like
- 35:12that. I said, "Which day did you tell
- 35:14him that?" He said he did not remember.
- 35:17I wrote down that he did not remember
- 35:19because here is what I understood
- 35:21sitting on that porch with a dead man's
- 35:24pencil in my hand. That sentence was not
- 35:26an insult he threw at me in a hallway.
- 35:28It was a sales point. He had used it on
- 35:31somebody else in a business conversation
- 35:34about an asset. I sat down in Dileia
- 35:37Krauss's office on Monday, September
- 35:3814th. She has two rooms over a bakery on
- 35:41Court Street in Gaylord, and the whole
- 35:43place smells like cinnamon rolls, which
- 35:45is not fair to her. She is 47. She let
- 35:48me lay it all out on her table without
- 35:50interrupting once, which cost her 11
- 35:53minutes and bought my whole trust. Then
- 35:56she told me what to do. Ambrose Carver's
- 35:58estate. Otiggo County probate file 80147
- 36:02closed in 1980 with an asset nobody knew
- 36:06about. Michigan lets you reopen an
- 36:08estate for a subsequently discovered
- 36:10asset. You petition. You notice the
- 36:13interested persons. The court signs a
- 36:15supplemental order of assignment
- 36:17covering the omitted property. You
- 36:19record a certified copy of that order
- 36:21and the county's books finally show what
- 36:24has been true since 1968.
- 36:27$2,400 flat plus $175 filing fee. Three
- 36:32to five weeks, maybe more depending on
- 36:34the judge's docket. I asked her the
- 36:37question I did not want to ask. I said,
- 36:39"I have $2,190
- 36:42a month." She said, "Then we'll get it
- 36:44filed and you'll pay me when the
- 36:46operator pays you." I said, "No." I sold
- 36:49Walter's 1994 F150 to a welder in
- 36:53Vanderbilt for $3,100
- 36:56and I paid her before she started. She
- 36:59also told me something I had not asked
- 37:01about.
- 37:03She said that as a surviving spouse I
- 37:05could elect against the will in Michigan
- 37:07and take a share of the Atta House. She
- 37:09said I had a real claim and a real
- 37:11deadline. I told her no, and I want to
- 37:13be clear about why because it is not
- 37:15nobility. I said, "I don't want half of
- 37:18a house with a mortgage on it. I want my
- 37:20father-in-law's name off something. He's
- 37:22been dead 46 years." She wrote that
- 37:25down. I found page two on Saturday the
- 37:2819th, and I found it by being annoyed.
- 37:30The return to vision order envelope was
- 37:33too heavy. That is all. 35 years of
- 37:36handling paper, and my hands still know
- 37:39a weight that does not match. Two carbon
- 37:42sheets inside stuck together with old
- 37:44rubber cement between them. folded twice
- 37:47was the rest of the letter. He wrote
- 37:49about the house first. On March 17th,
- 37:522022, he opened a home equity line on
- 37:55the Ada House, drew $148,000,
- 37:58and gave every dollar to Preston to
- 38:01bridge a strip mall deal in Wyoming.
- 38:03Preston paid back nothing. Walter kept
- 38:06covering the interest out of the furnace
- 38:08pension and never told me because he was
- 38:10ashamed. Then he wrote about the will.
- 38:14In the fall of 2023, he went to the law
- 38:17library at the Kent County Courthouse
- 38:19and had a librarian pull him a statute.
- 38:22Michigan Compiled Laws section 700.2607.
- 38:26He copied the whole thing out longhand,
- 38:29and that copy is in the box in the same
- 38:31pencil. A specific device passes subject
- 38:34to any mortgage or other security
- 38:37interest existing on the date of death
- 38:39without right of exoneration regardless
- 38:42of a general directive in the will to
- 38:44pay debts. He wrote it in his own words
- 38:47underneath and I am going to read you
- 38:49exactly what he wrote. I gave him the
- 38:52house because he was going to take it
- 38:54anyway. I made sure the debt went with
- 38:56it. And I gave you the only thing in
- 38:59this family that isn't borrowed against.
- 39:03And then the last part, the part I had
- 39:04to put down and pick back up twice. I
- 39:06didn't tell you because I asked you once
- 39:08in March of 2019 and I could see you had
- 39:10your mother on your mind. After that, I
- 39:13decided I'd bring you an answer instead
- 39:15of a question. I ran out of time to
- 39:18bring you the answer, so I'm bringing
- 39:20you the file. I did not take my dead
- 39:22husband's word for any of it. I want to
- 39:25say that plainly because grief will make
- 39:27a person believe a piece of notebook
- 39:28paper. The Kent County Register of Deeds
- 39:31has its index online. It took me 20
- 39:34minutes. Mortgage recorded May 20th,
- 39:372021. Principal 735,000.
- 39:40Home equity line recorded March 17,
- 39:432022. Credit limit 150,000. Both
- 39:47instruments listed one borrower, Walter
- 39:50A. Carver, not me. Then I asked Dileia
- 39:53to request the lender payoff statements
- 39:55the estate had already received since I
- 39:58was an interested person in the estate
- 40:00and entitled to them. They came in 9
- 40:02days. First mortgage balance at date of
- 40:05death $647,376.
- 40:09Home equity line balance at date of
- 40:11death $148,000.
- 40:14$795,376
- 40:18of leans on a house that appraised in
- 40:20August at 1 million472,000
- 40:25and in the estate account $61,340.
- 40:30I sent Randall Bosworth a one-s sentence
- 40:32email. I asked whether the estate would
- 40:35be paying off the incumbrances on the
- 40:37ADA property. His associate answered in
- 40:40writing two days later and quoted the
- 40:42statute and added one line of her own.
- 40:45Absent express language directing
- 40:47exoneration. The DVZ takes the property
- 40:50subject to the leans. I read that email
- 40:53standing in a gravel driveway with one
- 40:56bar of service. I know some of you have
- 40:58a paper you have never read
- 41:01in a drawer in a safe deposit box in
- 41:04your mother's kitchen. If this story is
- 41:07making you think about it, say so in the
- 41:09comments and subscribe because the last
- 41:12three weeks of October are the reason I
- 41:15sat down to tell it. Voss came back on
- 41:18Tuesday of September 29th with a
- 41:20contract in a leather folder and a
- 41:22better number. $86,000.
- 41:25He said he had gone to bat for me with
- 41:26his partners. I made him coffee, which
- 41:29he did not expect, and I read his
- 41:31contract at the table while he sat
- 41:33there. It was four pages. The number is
- 41:35on page one where they always are. What
- 41:38matters is never on page one. Paragraph
- 41:417, second sentence. The interests
- 41:43conveyed include all acred, suspended,
- 41:46and unpaid proceeds attributable there,
- 41:48too. I read it twice and set my cup
- 41:51down. He watched me read it. He knew
- 41:53what it said. He had written it or
- 41:54bought it from somebody who had. Then he
- 41:57gave me the rest of the pitch, and this
- 41:58is the second time I heard his line.
- 42:01Mrs. Carver, nobody's ever going to pay
- 42:03you for dirt you can't see. And I'll
- 42:05tell you something else, because I'd
- 42:07feel bad if you found out the hard way.
- 42:09Whatever's sitting in that suspense
- 42:11account, it doesn't sit forever.
- 42:13Unclaimed property as cheats to the
- 42:15state of Michigan. That money's probably
- 42:18been gone for years. That is the
- 42:20sentence that told me he was lying, and
- 42:22it took me 2 days at a library computer
- 42:24in Gaylord to prove it. A sheet runs on
- 42:27dormcancy. Dormcy means no contact from
- 42:30the owner. 27 letters, one every March
- 42:34from 2000 to 2026.
- 42:37That account had never been dormant for
- 42:40a single 12-month period in its life
- 42:43because a furnace man in Ada, Michigan
- 42:45would not stop writing to it. I told Mr.
- 42:48Voss I would keep the contract to read
- 42:50carefully. He said, "Take your time." He
- 42:53said it the way people say it when they
- 42:54do not mean it.
- 42:57Here is what the next four weeks
- 42:58actually looked like because I think the
- 43:00honest version is more useful than the
- 43:02fast one. Wednesday, September 16th,
- 43:06Dileia filed the petition to reopen the
- 43:08estate of Ambrose John Carver for a
- 43:11subsequently discovered asset. Notice
- 43:14went out to the interested persons,
- 43:15which by then meant me and Preston. He
- 43:18never responded. I do not think he read
- 43:20it. Then we waited on a docket in a
- 43:23county with one probate judge.
- 43:26Wednesday, September 30th, the court
- 43:28signed the supplemental order of
- 43:30assignment, two pages. It said the oil,
- 43:33gas, and other minerals reserved in Lee
- 43:35Bear, 214, page 501, are assigned to the
- 43:39estate of Walter A. Carver, deceased.
- 43:41Friday, October 2nd, I stood at that
- 43:44same counter at 225 West Main Street,
- 43:47and recorded a certified copy plus the
- 43:49personal representative's deed of
- 43:51distribution, putting the interests in
- 43:53my name. $30 a document, which is a flat
- 43:56fee in Michigan. Now, the clerk stamped
- 43:58it and handed it back and said, "Liba
- 44:011188, page 402." I said, "Thank you."
- 44:04And I went and sat in the car for a
- 44:06minute. 1968, 1980, 1987,
- 44:111999,
- 44:122004,
- 44:142011, 2019.
- 44:1758 years of a family owning something
- 44:20they could not prove they owned. And it
- 44:22closed with a rubber stamp and a $30
- 44:25fee. That same afternoon, I overnighted
- 44:28the packet to KCASa. Certified order,
- 44:32deed of distribution, division order
- 44:34signed, W9 signed. $28.75
- 44:40at the counter in the Gaylord Post
- 44:42Office. Then I drove back to a cabin
- 44:44with a new regulator and a dead man's
- 44:46letters and I waited 7 weeks almost to
- 44:49the day from the afternoon I opened that
- 44:51door. Sylvia Bonner called at 1012 on
- 44:54the morning of Friday, October 9th. She
- 44:57said, "Mrs. Carver, our title people
- 44:59cleared it.
- 45:01You're the owner of record." I said,
- 45:03"Thank you." And then I could not say
- 45:05anything else, so she kept going, which
- 45:07was kind of her. 740 of the 1180 net
- 45:11mineral acres sit inside three producing
- 45:13units. Three Antrum wells permits
- 45:1645,23145,232
- 45:22and 47,09.
- 45:24My decimal interest in the largest unit
- 45:26is 0156250.
- 45:30Then she read the balance in the
- 45:31suspense account $681,940.17.
- 45:38I asked her to say it again. She said it
- 45:40again. It would release on the November
- 45:43payment run Wednesday the 25th. Going
- 45:46forward, the last 12 months had averaged
- 45:48$2,615
- 45:50a month. I said I had been told the
- 45:52money would have esceded to the state.
- 45:55She said, "No, ma'am. That account was
- 45:57never dormant. Somebody contacted us
- 45:59every year. Papers moving. Last owner
- 46:03correspondence on file is dated March
- 46:0512th of this year.
- 46:07March 12th, 2 months after the
- 46:10diagnosis, 14 weeks before he died, when
- 46:13I hung up, I did something I had been
- 46:15putting off. That tan suitcase had been
- 46:18standing next to the cabin door since
- 46:20August 22nd, 49 days. I had been living
- 46:24out of it like a woman in a motel who
- 46:26has not decided yet. I put it in the
- 46:28closet and shut the door. Then Sylvia
- 46:31said, "One more thing, and I'm only
- 46:33telling you because you're the owner
- 46:35now, and it's in your file."
- 46:37I sat down on the arm of the couch. She
- 46:40said there was a call note in the owner
- 46:42record, not a letter. A phone call
- 46:45logged by the receptionist and forwarded
- 46:47to owner relations. Thursday, July 16th,
- 46:502026, 2:41 in the afternoon. Caller
- 46:54identified himself as Preston Carver,
- 46:56son of the deceased. He asked two
- 46:58questions.
- 47:00First, what happens to funds held in
- 47:02suspense if the record owner passes
- 47:04away? Second, how a person gets added to
- 47:07an account as an authorized contact. She
- 47:10said the answer given was that suspended
- 47:12funds follow the mineral title through
- 47:15the deceased owner's estate and that we
- 47:17do not add contacts without
- 47:19documentation.
- 47:21I thanked her. My voice was fine. I have
- 47:24a telephone voice from 35 years of a
- 47:27public desk and it does not leave. Then
- 47:30I sat in that room and did the
- 47:31arithmetic one more time. The will was
- 47:34read on Tuesday, July 14th. He called
- 47:37them on Thursday, July 16th. Two days,
- 47:41not two weeks. Two days after he stood
- 47:43at an elevator and laughed at his
- 47:45father's dirt, 5 weeks before I ever
- 47:47drove north, I took an envelope off the
- 47:49table and wrote on the back of it in
- 47:51pen. The way you write something, you
- 47:53are going to need to say out loud later.
- 47:567:1626
- 47:592:41 p.m. He did not say it because he
- 48:02was angry at me. He said it because he
- 48:04had run the numbers. That sentence was
- 48:06never a joke. It was a date. Two things
- 48:10arrived on Wednesday, October 14th. The
- 48:13first was a letter from Trina Minerals
- 48:15in Traverse City. I had written to three
- 48:18buyers not to sell, but because I wanted
- 48:20a number from somebody with nothing to
- 48:22gain from lying low. Their written
- 48:24valuation of the Carver Mineral Estate
- 48:27based on a three-year production average
- 48:29was $164,000.
- 48:32Voss had opened at 47,500.
- 48:35He had come back at 86. And under
- 48:38paragraph 7, either number would have
- 48:39bought the $681,940.17
- 48:45sitting in that suspense account along
- 48:48with everything after it. The second
- 48:50thing was a group text. Housewarming
- 48:52Sunday the 18th 2:00 41 to 80 Tory Pine
- 48:56Court 30ome people caterer photographer
- 49:00from a regional home magazine the whole
- 49:02thing.
- 49:04And at the end from my son, mom, you
- 49:06should come. Bring a dish if you want. I
- 49:09baked two apple pies on Saturday in an
- 49:11oven that runs 60° hot. Sunday morning,
- 49:14I loaded the car. The pies went on the
- 49:17back seat. The green metal file box went
- 49:20in the trunk with the masking tape and
- 49:21the block letters, and I laid a dish
- 49:24towel over it the way you cover a pie.
- 49:26Then I drove 176 miles south, the same
- 49:30road, the other direction. The first
- 49:32time I made that drive, I did not know
- 49:35what I was carrying. There were 34
- 49:37people in my kitchen. I counted because
- 49:40counting keeps my hands still. The
- 49:42dining set from the May 12th invoice,
- 49:45the rug, a bartender behind my own
- 49:47island, which is a granite slab Walter
- 49:50picked out in 2011 because he liked the
- 49:52fossils in it. Gordon Voss was standing
- 49:54by the sliding door with a glass of
- 49:56white wine. He saw me and lifted it
- 49:59about an inch. Preston brought me in
- 50:01like a guest of honor. He put his hand
- 50:04between my shoulder blades and announced
- 50:06me. Everybody my mom. She's been up at
- 50:09the lake place all fall living the
- 50:11retirement dream. People laughed the way
- 50:14people do. Then I went to set the pies
- 50:17down and I was 4 feet away with her back
- 50:20to me talking to two women and a man
- 50:22from the church. She's not doing well
- 50:25since dad passed. We're handling all her
- 50:27paperwork now. The man said something
- 50:30sympathetic. Ivette turned around with
- 50:32the wine bottle in her hand and saw me
- 50:35standing there holding two pie plates.
- 50:37And for about 3 seconds, her face was
- 50:40not her face. It was the face of a
- 50:4324year-old on a driveway in Wyoming,
- 50:45Michigan in August of 2011, watching her
- 50:49mother fold a blanket in the back of a
- 50:51Buick. Then it closed again, smooth as a
- 50:54drawer. "Mom," she said. kitchen's that
- 50:58way. I set the pies on the counter.
- 51:02Then I went back out to the car and I
- 51:04came in with the green box and I set it
- 51:06on the island. I asked Preston for 30
- 51:09seconds. He said, "Mom, not now." and
- 51:12turned back to his partner. So I said it
- 51:14once more at exactly the same volume,
- 51:17and the room did what rooms do when a
- 51:19woman does not raise her voice. It got
- 51:22quiet in a circle that kept widening. I
- 51:25opened the box. I took out four
- 51:27documents and laid them side by side on
- 51:29the granite. I said, "On September 30th,
- 51:33the Oiggo County Probate Court signed a
- 51:36supplemental order of assignment. It's
- 51:38recorded at Labber 1188, page 42.
- 51:44The oil and gas your grandfather
- 51:45reserved in 1968 is in my name. 1180 net
- 51:50mineral acres. 740 of them are in
- 51:53producing units." I put down the
- 51:56statement of account from Sturgeon Ridge
- 51:58Energy. There is $681,940.117
- 52:04in a suspense account in KCASa with my
- 52:06name on it. It releases November 25th,
- 52:10about 2600 a month after that. Nobody
- 52:14said anything. The photographer stopped.
- 52:17I turned to the sliding door. Mr. Voss,
- 52:21you said it to me twice. Nobody's ever
- 52:23going to pay you for dirt you can't see.
- 52:26I held up his contract and read
- 52:27paragraph 7 out loud. All of it. Then I
- 52:30said, "You offered me 47,500
- 52:33for an account you knew had 681,000
- 52:36in it." He set the wine glass on the
- 52:39shelf and walked out through my dining
- 52:40room without his coat. Preston hit the
- 52:43island with the flat of his hand.
- 52:45Glasses jumped. He said his father had
- 52:47no right twice and the second time his
- 52:50voice cracked. I did not raise mine. My
- 52:53hands started shaking in that kitchen up
- 52:55north in August in a doorway. They were
- 52:58not shaking. Now, "There's one more
- 53:00thing," I said, "and then I'll go." I
- 53:04laid down the last three pages.
- 53:07This is the payoff on this house the day
- 53:09your father died. $647,376.
- 53:14This is the home equity line he opened
- 53:16on March 17th, 2022.
- 53:19148,000. He drew it and gave it to you
- 53:22for the Wyoming deal. You never made a
- 53:24payment. Somebody near the fireplace
- 53:27said, "Oh my god." Very quietly. That is
- 53:30$795,376
- 53:35of leans on a house that appraised at
- 53:371,472.
- 53:40Then I put down a print out. Michigan
- 53:43Compiled Laws section 700 on 2607. A
- 53:47specific device passes subject to any
- 53:49mortgage or other security interest
- 53:51existing on the date of death without
- 53:53right of exoneration regardless of a
- 53:56general directive in the will to pay
- 53:58debts. That means the estate does not
- 54:00pay it off for you. The clause about
- 54:03just debts doesn't change it. There's
- 54:05$61,340
- 54:08in that estate account. It isn't yours
- 54:10and it wouldn't be enough. I said it
- 54:13costs $6,272
- 54:16a month to keep this house. 2952 in
- 54:19principal and interest, $940 in interest
- 54:22on the line. Taxes are 23,880
- 54:26a year. Insurance is 46.80. That is
- 54:29every month, Preston. Starting now. He
- 54:32stared at the granite. And then I said
- 54:34the last part in the same voice I used
- 54:37for 40 years, telling strangers which
- 54:40drawer the microfilm was in. You told me
- 54:43I'd be dead before winter. On Thursday,
- 54:45July 16th, at 2:41 in the afternoon, 2
- 54:49days after the will was read, you called
- 54:51Sturgeon Ridge Energy and asked, "What
- 54:54happens to suspended funds when the
- 54:56record owner dies?" I never thought it
- 54:59was a joke, honey. I thought it was a
- 55:01plan. Here is what happened after
- 55:04measured the only way I know how.
- 55:08Preston listed the house on Tuesday,
- 55:10November 3rd at 1,395,000.
- 55:15That is 77,000 under the appraisal his
- 55:18own lender ordered in August in northern
- 55:20market winter with two loans on it. That
- 55:23is not a price. That is a flare. As of
- 55:26the day I am telling you this, there has
- 55:28not been an offer. Ivette returned
- 55:31$22,000
- 55:32of the furniture. The showroom in
- 55:34Birmingham charges 25% restocking. She
- 55:38ate $5,500
- 55:40to send back a sofa nobody had sat on.
- 55:43Gordon Voss never called again. Dileia
- 55:47sent him a letter on the 7th of November
- 55:49asking that any further contact come
- 55:51through her office. He signed the green
- 55:53card and that was the last of him. His
- 55:56paragraph 7, she told me, is not
- 55:58illegal. It is just the reason you read
- 56:01past page one.
- 56:03Sturgeon Ridge Energy released the funds
- 56:06on the November payment run Wednesday
- 56:08the 25th. 681,940.17
- 56:14wired to a credit union in Gaylord. It
- 56:17all lands on 1099 in one tax year. So, I
- 56:21moved 190,000 into a separate account
- 56:24for the federal bill and Michigan's 4
- 56:26and a/4% and I have not touched it.
- 56:30Bosworth's office sent Preston a
- 56:32schedule of the estates's obligations on
- 56:35the 16th. Creditor notice final income
- 56:38tax returned the fee for a personal
- 56:40representative who has done none of the
- 56:42work. He asked whether the estate could
- 56:45pay the mortgage down. He got the same
- 56:47statute I read out loud in his kitchen.
- 56:50He texted me on December 2nd. Three
- 56:53paragraphs. The first two were about how
- 56:56hard the year had been for him. I
- 56:58answered with one line. Talk to Dileia
- 57:00Krauss. She has my number. I signed a
- 57:03plowing contract for Sawmill Trail on
- 57:05November 11th.
- 57:07$850 for the season paid up front. A man
- 57:11named Rusk with a Kubota and a 2-day a
- 57:14week promise. That is what it costs to
- 57:16make my son's arithmetic wrong. $850.
- 57:21The furnace still clicks three times
- 57:23before it lights. New regulator, same
- 57:26three clicks. I have come to count them
- 57:28out loud without noticing the way you
- 57:30hum. The green box sits on top of the
- 57:33china cupboard now lid open and I keep
- 57:36receipts in it. Plow contract, propane,
- 57:39the certified copy from the register of
- 57:42deeds because I am not going to be the
- 57:44next person in this family who cannot
- 57:46prove what she owns. The suitcase is in
- 57:49the closet. I am not planning to need
- 57:51it. I have a roofer coming in April.
- 57:5431,000 quoted and signed, plus a well
- 57:58pump and a bedroom window. It is still
- 58:01an ugly little cabin. It is mine. It is
- 58:03paid for, and there is not a lean on one
- 58:06board of it. I sent Preston one letter,
- 58:09and it is the only boundary I have set
- 58:11out loud. I wrote that I am not angry
- 58:14because anger is a thing you carry and I
- 58:17have carried enough. I wrote that there
- 58:19will be no loans, no co-signing and no
- 58:22advances against anything. I wrote that
- 58:25all contact about his father's estate
- 58:27goes through Dia and I wrote the last
- 58:30line twice before I got it right. The
- 58:32door is open the day you can tell me the
- 58:34date you decided I was worth more to you
- 58:36dead. Until then, we're fine at a
- 58:39distance. We got our first real snow on
- 58:42the 8th of December. Russ came through
- 58:44at 6:00 in the morning with the Kubota
- 58:46right on schedule and the road was open
- 58:49by 7. I made coffee and took it out to
- 58:51the porch in Walter's barn coat and I
- 58:54read the first letter again. March 9th,
- 58:572000. Two paragraphs. He misspelled
- 59:00reservation. He never got one dollar of
- 59:03it. 27 marches and not one dollar. But
- 59:07he got the last word and he got it
- 59:09through me, which I think is what he was
- 59:11after.
- 59:13Here's what I would tell you. If you are
- 59:14the one in your family, everybody talks
- 59:17around. People will always price you by
- 59:19what they can see the house and the car
- 59:21and the coat. And if you let them do it
- 59:23long enough, you will start agreeing
- 59:25with them. Your job is to go read the
- 59:27original. That's my story. One suitcase,
- 59:31one green box, 27 letters nobody read.
- 59:34If it made you think of a paper you have
- 59:36never opened, go open it. Share this
- 59:39with someone who needs it. Comment,
- 59:41subscribe, and I'll see you next time.
