My Son Banned Me From His Wedding for His Bride — But What I Revealed Next Silenced Everyone — Transcript

- 0:00At his wedding, [music] my son screamed,
- 0:01"Get out. She doesn't want you here." I
- 0:05walked out silently, tears [music]
- 0:07streaming. The next day, "Mom, give me
- 0:10the mansion keys. We're honeymooning
- 0:11there." I gave him the keys with a
- 0:13smile. When they turned on the TV in the
- 0:16master bedroom, there was a nice video
- 0:18of his bride playing on every channel.
- 0:20If you're watching this, subscribe and
- 0:22let me know where you're watching from.
- 0:24I'm Dorothy Walsh, 67 years old, and
- 0:27apparently the most unwelcome
- 0:28mother-in-law in Connecticut. But let me
- 0:30backtrack to how I got my perfect
- 0:32revenge on the woman who stole my son
- 0:35and the son who betrayed me. The wedding
- 0:37was supposed to be the happiest day of
- 0:38my life. I'd spent 3 months helping plan
- 0:41every detail from the flowers to the
- 0:43catering menu. I'd even bought a
- 0:45beautiful navy dress that complimented
- 0:47Sophia's color scheme. Everything was
- 0:50perfect until the moment I walked into
- 0:52the reception hall. What is she doing
- 0:54here? Sophia's voice cut through the
- 0:56chatter like a knife. She stood there in
- 0:58her $5,000 dress, pointing at me like I
- 1:01was some unwanted party crasher. My son,
- 1:03Michael, the boy I'd raised alone after
- 1:06his father died, just stood there
- 1:08frozen. I invited her, Michael said
- 1:10weakly. She's my mother. Your mother?
- 1:13Sophia's laugh was sharp and cold. The
- 1:15woman who tried to sabotage our
- 1:17engagement. The woman who called me a
- 1:19gold digger at the rehearsal dinner. I
- 1:21never called her that, though I
- 1:22certainly thought it. What I actually
- 1:24said was that I hoped they'd discussed
- 1:26their financial expectations for
- 1:28marriage. Apparently, that counted as
- 1:29sabotage in Sophia's world. Get out.
- 1:32Michael suddenly exploded, his face red
- 1:35with champagne and anger. She doesn't
- 1:37want you here. And honestly, neither do
- 1:39I. This is supposed to be our day, not
- 1:42another one of your guilt trips. The
- 1:44entire reception hall went silent. 200
- 1:47guests stared at me as tears rolled down
- 1:50my cheeks. My own son, the boy I'd
- 1:52worked three jobs to put through
- 1:54college, was throwing me out of his
- 1:56wedding like yesterday's garbage. I
- 1:58didn't argue. I didn't make a scene. I
- 2:00simply picked up my purse, walked to the
- 2:02door, and left. But as I sat in my car
- 2:05in the parking lot, watching through the
- 2:07windows as the party continued without
- 2:09me, something hard and cold settled in
- 2:11my chest. If they wanted to treat me
- 2:13like the enemy, maybe it was time I
- 2:15started acting like one. The next
- 2:17morning, Michael called. His voice was
- 2:19different now, sweet and apologetic, the
- 2:21way it got when he wanted something.
- 2:23Mom, I'm sorry about last night. Sophia
- 2:26was just stressed, and I overreacted.
- 2:28You know how weddings are. Of course,
- 2:30sweetheart, I said, though my heart was
- 2:33still broken. These things happen.
- 2:35Actually, we have a favor to ask. Could
- 2:37we borrow the keys to the mansion in the
- 2:39Hamptons? We want to honeymoon there
- 2:41instead of going to Italy. The travel
- 2:43costs got a bit higher than expected.
- 2:45The mansion, my late husband's family
- 2:47estate, worth about $4 million, which
- 2:50Michael thought he'd inherit someday.
- 2:52The same property where I'd spent my
- 2:54happiest years before Robert died. The
- 2:56same property where I'd installed a very
- 2:58sophisticated security system 6 months
- 3:00ago. "Of course, darling," I said,
- 3:03sweetness dripping from my voice. "I'll
- 3:05have the keys ready for you this
- 3:06afternoon." When Michael arrived with
- 3:08Sophia to pick up the keys, I couldn't
- 3:10help but notice how she avoided eye
- 3:12contact with me. "Good. She should feel
- 3:14ashamed of herself." "Thank you so much,
- 3:16Mrs. Walsh," she said in that fake,
- 3:18sweet voice she used when she wanted
- 3:20something. "This means the world to us."
- 3:22"Oh, call me Dorothy," I said, handing
- 3:25over the keys with a bright smile.
- 3:27"After all, we're family now." They
- 3:29drove off in Michael's BMW, laughing and
- 3:32planning their romantic getaway. I
- 3:34watched them go, then went inside to
- 3:36check my laptop. The security system I'd
- 3:38installed wasn't just for burglary
- 3:40protection. It included cameras in every
- 3:42room and the ability to override the
- 3:44entertainment system remotely. I opened
- 3:47the control panel and started uploading
- 3:49a very special video to the mansion's
- 3:51media server. A video I'd been saving
- 3:53for exactly the right moment. A video
- 3:56that was about to turn their honeymoon
- 3:57into a nightmare they'd never forget.
- 3:59Because 3 months ago, I'd learned the
- 4:02truth about my sweet daughter-in-law.
- 4:03And now it was time she learned what
- 4:05happens when you mess with Dorothy
- 4:07Walsh. Let me tell you how I discovered
- 4:09what kind of woman my son really
- 4:11married. It started with a phone call
- 4:13that changed everything. Mrs. Walsh,
- 4:16this is Detective James Morrison with
- 4:18the Hartford Police Department. We're
- 4:20investigating a fraud case and your
- 4:21son's fiance's name came up. Could we
- 4:24speak with you? My blood ran cold. This
- 4:26was 2 weeks before the wedding and I was
- 4:29in the middle of addressing invitation
- 4:30envelopes when the call came. What kind
- 4:33of fraud? I managed to ask. Credit card
- 4:35fraud, identity theft, some other
- 4:37charges. We believe she may have used
- 4:39false information to obtain credit under
- 4:41her previous name. The name Sophia Chen
- 4:44is relatively new. Sophia Chen. Her name
- 4:48wasn't even real. I sat down hard in my
- 4:50kitchen chair, my mind racing. Who had
- 4:53my son agreed to marry? What was her
- 4:55previous name? I asked. Sarah Martinez.
- 4:58She's been Sarah Martinez for the past 8
- 5:00years until she legally changed her name
- 5:0318 months ago. Right around the time she
- 5:05met your son, actually. 18 months ago,
- 5:07exactly when she'd shown up at the
- 5:09country club where Michael played
- 5:10tennis, claiming to be new in town and
- 5:12looking for tennis lessons. What a
- 5:14convenient coincidence. Detective
- 5:16Morrison, what exactly are you
- 5:18investigating? She ran up about $75,000
- 5:21in credit card debt under her previous
- 5:24identity, then disappeared. Changed her
- 5:26name, changed her entire identity. Her
- 5:29victims were mostly older men she met
- 5:30through dating apps. She'd gained their
- 5:32trust, get access to their financial
- 5:35information, then max out credit cards
- 5:37before vanishing. I felt sick. My son,
- 5:40my trusting, naive son, was about to
- 5:42marry a con artist. Have you spoken to
- 5:44my son about this? We tried, ma'am. He
- 5:47refused to listen. said we were wrong
- 5:49about her, that she'd told him about her
- 5:51name change already. Said it was because
- 5:53of an abusive ex-husband. Of course,
- 5:55she'd have a Saab story ready. That was
- 5:57probably how she'd hooked Michael in the
- 5:59first place. My son always was a sucker
- 6:02for a damsel in distress. What can I do
- 6:04to help? I asked. Honestly, not much
- 6:07legally. She hasn't technically
- 6:08committed any crimes, as Sophia Chen,
- 6:10but we thought the family should know
- 6:12what they're dealing with. After the
- 6:14detective hung up, I sat staring at the
- 6:16wedding invitations scattered across my
- 6:18table. 200 people were about to watch my
- 6:21son marry a criminal. But how could I
- 6:23stop it? Michael was completely under
- 6:25her spell, and as he'd made clear
- 6:27repeatedly, he thought I was just a
- 6:29jealous mother trying to interfere.
- 6:31That's when I decided to do some
- 6:32investigating of my own. If the police
- 6:35couldn't prove anything, maybe I could
- 6:37find evidence they'd missed. I hired a
- 6:39private investigator, a woman named
- 6:41Carmen Rodriguez, who specialized in
- 6:43background checks. Within a week, she'd
- 6:45uncovered more than the police had.
- 6:47"Your future daughter-in-law is quite
- 6:49interesting," Carmen said, spreading
- 6:51photos and documents across my coffee
- 6:53table. "Sarah Martinez was married twice
- 6:56before, both times to wealthy older men.
- 6:59Both marriages ended in divorce with her
- 7:01getting substantial settlements. I
- 7:03studied the photographs. There was
- 7:05Sophia, but younger, with different
- 7:07hair, laughing at charity galas with men
- 7:10old enough to be her grandfather. This
- 7:12one, Carmen pointed to a photo of Sophia
- 7:15with a silver-haired man in a tuxedo,
- 7:17was Marcus Freeman, a real estate
- 7:19developer in Florida. They were married
- 7:21for 18 months. He died of a heart attack
- 7:246 months after their divorce was
- 7:25finalized. That's suspicious. It gets
- 7:28better. The autopsy showed elevated
- 7:30levels of digitalis in his system. Not
- 7:32enough to be lethal, but enough to cause
- 7:34the kind of heart stress that might
- 7:36trigger an attack in someone with
- 7:38pre-existing conditions. My hands
- 7:40started shaking. Are you saying she
- 7:41murdered him? I'm saying the timing was
- 7:43very convenient. She got a $2.3 million
- 7:46settlement from the divorce, then
- 7:48inherited another $800,000 when he died.
- 7:51No charges were ever filed, but the
- 7:53family was suspicious enough to request
- 7:55the autopsy. Carmen pulled out another
- 7:57file. Then there's husband number two,
- 7:59David Park, a tech executive in
- 8:01California. Same pattern. Whirlwind
- 8:04romance, quick marriage, mysterious
- 8:06health problems, expensive divorce, then
- 8:09a convenient accident. What kind of
- 8:11accident? Fell down the stairs in his
- 8:13home, broke his neck. Again, no charges
- 8:16filed, but the insurance company fought
- 8:18the payout for 2 years. I felt like I
- 8:20was going to be sick. This woman, this
- 8:22predator, had somehow gotten her claws
- 8:25into my son. And there was more. The
- 8:27really interesting part, Carmen
- 8:29continued, is what happened in between
- 8:31marriages. She'd take breaks, completely
- 8:34disappear for 6 months to a year, then
- 8:36resurface with a new identity, new
- 8:38story, new hunting ground, and now she's
- 8:41hunting my son, it appears. So, the
- 8:43question is, what are you going to do
- 8:45about it? I thought about that for a
- 8:47long time. I could show Michael the
- 8:48evidence, but he'd already made it clear
- 8:50he wouldn't listen. I could go to the
- 8:52police again, but they'd already said
- 8:54there wasn't enough for charges. or I
- 8:56could wait and watch and hope she
- 8:58revealed herself before it was too late.
- 9:00That's when Carmen showed me the final
- 9:02piece of the puzzle. There's one more
- 9:03thing you should see, she said, pulling
- 9:05out her laptop. I managed to hack into
- 9:07Sarah's old iCloud account, the one she
- 9:10thought she'd deleted. She's not as
- 9:12techsavvy as she thinks. The video
- 9:14started playing and my jaw dropped.
- 9:16There was Sophia or Sarah or whatever
- 9:19her real name was, but she wasn't alone.
- 9:21And she definitely wasn't the innocent
- 9:23victim she pretended to be. When was
- 9:25this filmed? I asked. Based on the
- 9:27metadata. About 6 months ago, right
- 9:29around the time she got engaged to your
- 9:31son. I stared at the screen, watching my
- 9:33future daughter-in-law in a very
- 9:35compromising position with a man who
- 9:37definitely wasn't Michael. The audio was
- 9:39crystal clear, including the part where
- 9:42she laughed about her naive fiance and
- 9:45how easy it would be to clean him out.
- 9:46"Can you make me a copy of this?" I
- 9:48asked. Carmen nodded. "What are you
- 9:51planning to do?" I smiled for the first
- 9:53time in weeks. I'm going to save my son,
- 9:56even if he hates me for it. The next two
- 9:58weeks before the wedding were the
- 9:59longest of my life. Every day, I watched
- 10:01Michael get more excited about his
- 10:03future with Sophia, and every day I knew
- 10:05more about what she really was. I tried
- 10:08one more time to talk to him. 3 days
- 10:10before the ceremony. Michael,
- 10:12sweetheart, are you absolutely sure
- 10:14about this marriage? Have you and Sophia
- 10:16discussed your long-term financial
- 10:17goals? He rolled his eyes. Mom, not this
- 10:20again. Yes, we've talked about money.
- 10:23Yes, I know you think she's after the
- 10:25family money, but you're wrong about
- 10:26her. What exactly has she told you about
- 10:28her past? She was married before to an
- 10:31abusive man. She had to change her name
- 10:33to escape him. She's been hurt before,
- 10:35which is why she's cautious about trust.
- 10:37But she loves me, Mom. Really loves me.
- 10:40The lies came so easily to her, and he
- 10:42believed every word. And you've met her
- 10:45family. She doesn't have family. Her
- 10:47parents died in a car accident when she
- 10:49was young. She was raised by an aunt
- 10:51who's now in a nursing home with
- 10:53dementia. It's actually really sad.
- 10:55Another lie. According to Carmen's
- 10:57investigation, Sophia's parents were
- 10:59alive and well and living in Phoenix.
- 11:02They'd tried to warn her previous
- 11:03husbands about their daughter's history,
- 11:05but by then it was always too late.
- 11:07Michael, what if I told you I had proof
- 11:10that she's not who she says she is? His
- 11:12face hardened. I'd say you need to stop
- 11:15trying to destroy my happiness. I know
- 11:17you're lonely since dad died, but that
- 11:19doesn't give you the right to sabotage
- 11:21my marriage. That hurt more than
- 11:23anything Sophia had done to me. My own
- 11:26son thought I was so pathetic, so
- 11:28desperate for attention that I'd lie to
- 11:30keep him single. I would never lie to
- 11:32you about something this important.
- 11:34Really? Then where's this proof? I
- 11:36hesitated, showing him the video would
- 11:38destroy him, and there was no guarantee
- 11:40he'd believe it wasn't somehow faked.
- 11:43Sophia had done an excellent job of
- 11:44painting me as an unstable, jealous
- 11:46mother. Anything I showed him would be
- 11:48dismissed as another attempt to break
- 11:50them up. I thought so, he said when I
- 11:52didn't answer. Mom, I love you, but you
- 11:55need to accept that I'm getting married.
- 11:57Sophia is going to be your
- 11:58daughter-in-law, and if you can't be
- 12:00civil to her, then maybe you shouldn't
- 12:02come to the wedding. That was the moment
- 12:04I knew there was no saving him before
- 12:06the marriage. He'd have to learn the
- 12:07truth the hard way. But that didn't mean
- 12:09I couldn't be prepared for when reality
- 12:11hit. The wedding planning continued
- 12:13around me like a nightmare. Sophia made
- 12:15a big show of asking for my opinion on
- 12:17flowers and music, but it was clear she
- 12:19was just humoring me. Michael had
- 12:21obviously told her about our
- 12:22conversation because she started being
- 12:24extra sweet as if she was proving how
- 12:26wrong I was about her. Dorothy, you have
- 12:29such good taste, she'd coo, showing me
- 12:32fabric sample. Michael is so lucky to
- 12:34have such a devoted mother. But I caught
- 12:36the look in her eyes when she thought I
- 12:38wasn't watching. cold calculation like
- 12:41she was measuring me for a coffin. 2
- 12:43days before the wedding, she made her
- 12:45biggest mistake yet. She asked to meet
- 12:47me for lunch, just the two of us. "I
- 12:49know this transition is hard for you,"
- 12:51she said over salads at the country
- 12:53club. "Michael means everything to you,
- 12:55and now you have to share him." "That's
- 12:57what mothers do," I replied carefully.
- 13:00"We want our children to be happy." "Of
- 13:02course. And I want you to know that I
- 13:04would never try to come between you and
- 13:06Michael. Family is so important." She
- 13:08said this while wearing a bracelet that
- 13:10cost more than most people's cars paid
- 13:12for with my son's credit card. That's
- 13:14good to hear. Although, she continued,
- 13:17her voice getting softer, more
- 13:19conspiratorial. I hope you understand
- 13:21that as Michael's wife, I'll need to be
- 13:24his primary confidant, especially about
- 13:26financial matters. It wouldn't be
- 13:28appropriate for him to discuss our
- 13:29private business with anyone else, even
- 13:31family. There it was, the opening move
- 13:34to cut me out of Michael's life
- 13:35completely. I wouldn't expect him to
- 13:37share personal information, I said.
- 13:39Wonderful, because I'd hate for there to
- 13:41be any confusion about boundaries.
- 13:43Michael needs to feel like he can be
- 13:45completely honest with me without
- 13:47worrying about judgment from others. She
- 13:49was already planning to isolate him to
- 13:51make sure no one could warn him when she
- 13:53started draining his accounts. Sophia,
- 13:55can I ask you something? Of course. Do
- 13:58you love my son? Her smile never
- 14:00wavered, but something flickered in her
- 14:02eyes. What a strange question. Of
- 14:04course, I love him. Why would you ask
- 14:06that? Because loving someone means
- 14:08wanting what's best for them, even when
- 14:10it's not what's best for you. And I
- 14:12wonder if you've ever loved anyone that
- 14:14way. Now, the mask slipped just for a
- 14:17second. I saw the real Sophia, cold and
- 14:20calculating and completely without
- 14:22empathy. I think, she said slowly, that
- 14:25you don't know me as well as you think
- 14:26you do. You're absolutely right, I
- 14:28replied. I don't know Sarah Martinez at
- 14:31all. The effect was electric. Her face
- 14:33went completely white, then flushed red.
- 14:35For a moment, I thought she might
- 14:37actually lose control. I don't know what
- 14:39you're talking about. Of course you
- 14:40don't. Just like you don't know Marcus
- 14:42Freeman or David Park. She stood up so
- 14:44quickly her chair fell over. This lunch
- 14:46is over. Sit down. Sophia or Sarah,
- 14:50whichever name you prefer. She sat, but
- 14:52her hands were shaking. Now, here's
- 14:54what's going to happen, I continued
- 14:55calmly. You're going to marry my son
- 14:58because stopping you now would hurt him
- 14:59more than letting you go through with
- 15:01it. But I want you to know that I know
- 15:03exactly what you are. And the second you
- 15:05heard him, I will destroy you. You can't
- 15:07prove anything, can't I? I pulled out my
- 15:10phone and showed her a screenshot from
- 15:12the video Carmen had found. Not the
- 15:14worst part, just enough to let her know
- 15:16what I had. The color drained from her
- 15:18face completely. That's impossible. I
- 15:21deleted everything. Technology is
- 15:23amazing these days, isn't it? Delete
- 15:25doesn't always mean gone forever. She
- 15:28stared at the phone, then at me. What do
- 15:30you want? I want you to be a good wife
- 15:32to my son. I want you to love him and
- 15:34take care of him and never give me a
- 15:36reason to share what I know about your
- 15:38past. And if I don't, I smiled and put
- 15:40my phone away. Then you'll find out what
- 15:42happens when you underestimate a mother
- 15:45protecting her child. She left without
- 15:47another word, and I sat there finishing
- 15:49my salad, feeling better than I had in
- 15:51weeks. At least now she knew I wasn't
- 15:53the helpless old woman she'd thought I
- 15:55was. But I should have known that
- 15:56threatening a predator would only make
- 15:58her more dangerous. The honeymoon was
- 16:00supposed to last a week. They came back
- 16:02after 2 days and Michael looked like
- 16:04he'd seen a ghost. They showed up at my
- 16:06house on Tuesday morning. Sophia's face
- 16:09red and puffy from crying. Michael pale
- 16:11and shaking. I opened the door with my
- 16:14warmest smile. Hello, darlings. You're
- 16:16back early. How was the mansion? You
- 16:18know damn well how it was, Michael said,
- 16:21pushing past me into the living room.
- 16:22Sophia wouldn't even look at me. She
- 16:24stood in my foyer like she was afraid to
- 16:26come any closer, which was probably
- 16:28smart of her. "I'm afraid I don't
- 16:30understand," I said innocently. "Did
- 16:32something happen?" "The video, Mom." The
- 16:35video that somehow got uploaded to every
- 16:37television in the house. The video that
- 16:39started playing the moment we turned on
- 16:41any screen. I gasped dramatically. "Oh
- 16:45my goodness, was there a virus in the
- 16:47system? How terrible." "Cut the act!"
- 16:50Michael snapped. "You did this. Somehow
- 16:53you did this. Michael, honey, I don't
- 16:55know anything about uploading videos.
- 16:57You know, I can barely work my email,
- 16:59but I'd practiced that speech. Carmen
- 17:01had taught me exactly what to do with
- 17:03the mansion's smartome system. It was
- 17:05remarkably easy once you knew what you
- 17:07were doing. It was her. Sophia finally
- 17:10spoke, her voice. She threatened me at
- 17:12lunch. She knows things about my past,
- 17:14things that aren't true, and she's
- 17:16trying to destroy our marriage. What
- 17:18things? Michael asked, looking between
- 17:20us. This was the moment I'd been waiting
- 17:22for. Time to let them destroy each
- 17:24other. "Sophia, if you have something to
- 17:26tell Michael about your past, now would
- 17:28be a good time," I said gently. "It's
- 17:31all lies," she said desperately. "She
- 17:33hired someone to make fake documents,
- 17:35fake videos, fake everything. She can't
- 17:38stand that you chose me over her."
- 17:40Michael looked confused. "What fake
- 17:42documents? What videos?" I walked to my
- 17:45desk and pulled out the folder Carmen
- 17:46had given me. Perhaps these will clear
- 17:48things up. I handed him the file with
- 17:50copies of her marriage certificates,
- 17:52divorce documents, police reports, and
- 17:55the newspaper articles about her
- 17:56previous husband's deaths. Michael's
- 17:58hands shook as he read through
- 18:00everything. Sophia, what is this? Why
- 18:03does this say your name is Sarah
- 18:04Martinez? I can explain. And why are
- 18:07there two marriage certificates with
- 18:09your picture on them? Michael, please
- 18:12let me. And what's this about a David
- 18:14Park dying in a fall down the stairs?
- 18:16Sophia, who are these people? She was
- 18:18crying harder now, makeup streaming down
- 18:21her face. I was going to tell you
- 18:23everything after we were married. I was
- 18:25scared you wouldn't understand.
- 18:27Understand what? That you've been
- 18:28married twice before? That two men died
- 18:31after divorcing you? That your real name
- 18:34is Sarah? It's not what it looks like.
- 18:37Then explain it, he said, his voice
- 18:39getting louder. Explain why my mother
- 18:41has newspaper clippings about you being
- 18:44investigated for insurance fraud.
- 18:45explain why there's a police report here
- 18:47about credit card theft. I sat down in
- 18:49my armchair and watched my
- 18:51daughter-in-law's world collapse. It was
- 18:53even more satisfying than I'd imagined.
- 18:55The name change was because of an
- 18:57abusive ex-husband, she said
- 18:59desperately. I told you that. And yes, I
- 19:02was married before, but those men, they
- 19:04weren't good people. They tried to
- 19:06control me, to hurt me by giving you
- 19:08millions of dollars in divorce
- 19:09settlements. Michael's voice was ice
- 19:11cold now. I never asked for that money.
- 19:14They forced it on me because they felt
- 19:16guilty about how they treated me and
- 19:18then they both just happened to die in
- 19:20accidents. I didn't have anything to do
- 19:21with that. Michael looked at me. Mom,
- 19:24where did you get all this? I hired a
- 19:26private investigator after Detective
- 19:28Morrison called me about the fraud case.
- 19:30What fraud case? I explained about the
- 19:32phone call, about the credit card debt
- 19:34she'd run up under her previous name,
- 19:37about the pattern of targeting older men
- 19:38through dating apps. But she didn't meet
- 19:40me through a dating app, Michael said
- 19:42slowly. She met me at the tennis club.
- 19:45Actually, I said gently. According to
- 19:48the investigator, she joined that tennis
- 19:50club three days before meeting you.
- 19:52Right after she researched your family
- 19:54and found out about your father's
- 19:55estate, Michael sank into my couch like
- 19:57all the air had gone out of him. You
- 19:59researched my family. Michael, please. I
- 20:02love you. I really love you. Everything
- 20:05else was in the past before I met you.
- 20:07You changed me the same way Marcus
- 20:09Freeman changed you. The same way David
- 20:11Park changed you. This is different, is
- 20:14it? Because according to this police
- 20:16report, you told David Park the exact
- 20:18same thing. That he'd changed you. That
- 20:20you'd never felt love like this before.
- 20:22That your past didn't matter because you
- 20:24were different with him. I hadn't
- 20:26mentioned that detail to Michael. He'd
- 20:28figured it out himself by reading the
- 20:30investigator's notes. My son was smarter
- 20:32than I'd given him credit for. Michael,
- 20:34I know this looks bad, but looks bad. He
- 20:37stood up, pacing around my living room
- 20:39like a caged animal. Sophia or Sarah or
- 20:43whoever you are. I just watched a video
- 20:45of you having sex with another man while
- 20:48talking about how easy it would be to
- 20:50rob me blind. How exactly is that
- 20:52supposed to look good? She went
- 20:54completely silent. The crying stopped.
- 20:56The desperate explanation stopped.
- 20:58Everything stopped. When she finally
- 21:00looked up at him, I saw the real woman
- 21:02behind the mask for the first time. "You
- 21:04want to know the truth?" she said, her
- 21:06voice completely different now. "Colder,
- 21:09harder. Fine. Here's the truth. Yes, I
- 21:12researched your family. Yes, I joined
- 21:14that tennis club to meet you. Yes, I
- 21:17lied about my past. But so what? You got
- 21:20exactly what you wanted out of this
- 21:21marriage. What I wanted? A beautiful
- 21:24young wife who made you look successful.
- 21:26Someone to show off at your country
- 21:28club. Someone to make your friends
- 21:29jealous. You think I didn't know you
- 21:31were just trying to prove something to
- 21:32your dead father? Michael's face went
- 21:34white. That's not true. Really? Then why
- 21:37did you propose after 2 months? Why did
- 21:39you insist on having the wedding at the
- 21:41country club where all his old friends
- 21:43could see? Why did you tell everyone
- 21:45about how I was different from other
- 21:47women? Because I wasn't interested in
- 21:49your money. I had to admit, she had him
- 21:51there. Michael had always been insecure
- 21:54about living up to his father's legacy.
- 21:56You used me, he said quietly. We used
- 21:59each other, she corrected. The only
- 22:01difference is I'm honest about it. Did
- 22:03you ever love me at all? She was quiet
- 22:05for a long moment. Then I love the life
- 22:08you could give me. I love the security,
- 22:10the status, the future we could have
- 22:12had. But love you, Michael. I don't
- 22:15think I'm capable of loving anyone the
- 22:16way you mean. That was the moment my
- 22:18son's heart truly broke. Not when he saw
- 22:21the video. Not when he read the police
- 22:23reports, but when she admitted she'd
- 22:25never loved him at all. I want you out
- 22:27of my house, he said quietly. It's not
- 22:29your house yet, she replied.
- 22:31Technically, it's still your mother's
- 22:33house until you inherit it. which given
- 22:35what I know about the prenup you didn't
- 22:37make me sign might be sooner than you
- 22:39think. The threat was unmistakable. She
- 22:41was going to try to take everything in
- 22:43the divorce. Michael looked at me
- 22:45helplessly. Mom, what do I do? For the
- 22:48first time in months, my son was asking
- 22:50for my help instead of rejecting it.
- 22:52First, I said, you call your lawyer.
- 22:55Then, you call the bank and freeze any
- 22:56joint accounts. Then, you change all
- 22:58your passwords and make sure she can't
- 23:00access anything financial. You can't
- 23:02prove any of this, Sophia said, but
- 23:04there was no confidence in her voice
- 23:06anymore. Actually, I replied, I can
- 23:09prove all of it. Carmen was very
- 23:11thorough in her investigation, and video
- 23:13evidence is particularly compelling in
- 23:15divorce court. The look she gave me
- 23:17could have frozen hell. This isn't over,
- 23:19she said. Yes, I said calmly. It is. She
- 23:22left without another word, and Michael
- 23:24collapsed back onto my couch. Mom, I'm
- 23:27so sorry. I should have listened to you.
- 23:29You couldn't have known, sweetheart. She
- 23:31was very good at what she did. How did
- 23:33you know to investigate her? I sat down
- 23:36next to him and took his hand because no
- 23:38mother watches her son fall for someone
- 23:41and doesn't ask questions. And when the
- 23:43police called, I knew I had to protect
- 23:45you. The police called you first? They
- 23:47tried to call you, but you wouldn't
- 23:48listen. So, they called me instead.
- 23:50Michael was quiet for a long moment.
- 23:52She's going to try to take everything in
- 23:54the divorce, isn't she? She's going to
- 23:56try, but she's going to find out that
- 23:58Dorothy Walsh didn't raise a stupid son,
- 24:01and she definitely didn't raise one who
- 24:02goes into battle without backup. What do
- 24:05you mean? I smiled and pulled out
- 24:07another folder, this one much thicker
- 24:09than the first. I mean, your father
- 24:10taught me a thing or two about
- 24:12protecting family assets, and Carmen
- 24:14found some very interesting information
- 24:17about how Sarah Martinez's previous
- 24:19divorces were overturned when evidence
- 24:21of fraud came to light. Michael stared
- 24:24at me like he was seeing me for the
- 24:25first time. "Mom, you're kind of scary
- 24:28when you want to be." "Sweetheart," I
- 24:30said, patting his hand. "You have no
- 24:32idea." The divorce proceedings started
- 24:34exactly as I'd predicted. Sophia, or
- 24:37Sarah, hired the most expensive lawyer
- 24:39in the state and immediately filed for
- 24:41half of everything Michael owned, plus
- 24:44alimony, plus damages for emotional
- 24:46distress. Her lawyer, a shark named
- 24:49Hamilton Pierce, actually had the nerve
- 24:51to call me. Mrs. Walsh, I represent your
- 24:54daughter-in-law in the divorce
- 24:55proceedings. I understand you've been
- 24:57spreading some rather serious
- 24:58allegations about my client. I haven't
- 25:00been spreading anything, I said
- 25:02pleasantly. I simply provided my son
- 25:04with factual information about the woman
- 25:06he married. Factual information that was
- 25:08obtained through illegal means, hacking
- 25:11into private accounts, hiring
- 25:12investigators to stalk my client,
- 25:15invasion of privacy. My client has
- 25:17grounds for a substantial lawsuit
- 25:19against you personally. I almost
- 25:21laughed. Mr. Pierce, I think you should
- 25:23speak with your client about her
- 25:24previous legal troubles before you
- 25:26threaten me with lawsuits. Mrs. Walsh,
- 25:29I'm going to be very clear with you. My
- 25:31client is entitled to half of your son's
- 25:33assets, and that includes his
- 25:35inheritance from your husband. If you
- 25:37interfere with these proceedings, I will
- 25:39make sure you lose your home and
- 25:41everything else you own." How
- 25:43interesting. Does your client happen to
- 25:45mention that she's not actually entitled
- 25:46to any inheritance because it's held in
- 25:48a trust that specifically excludes
- 25:50spouses married for less than 2 years?
- 25:53There was a long pause. What trust? The
- 25:55one my husband established when Michael
- 25:57was 16. The one that protects family
- 25:59assets from exactly this kind of
- 26:01situation. I'm surprised Sarah didn't
- 26:03research that when she was researching
- 26:05everything else about our family.
- 26:07Another pause. I'll need to see
- 26:08documentation of this trust. Of course,
- 26:11my lawyer will provide copies during
- 26:13discovery. Along with all the
- 26:14documentation about Sarah's previous
- 26:16marriages and the civil suits filed
- 26:18against her by the families of her
- 26:20deceased ex-husbands, PICE hung up
- 26:22without another word. 2 days later,
- 26:25Sarah showed up at my house again. This
- 26:27time, she was alone and she looked
- 26:29desperate. "We need to talk," she said
- 26:31when I opened the door. "I don't think
- 26:33we have anything to discuss. Please,
- 26:35just 5 minutes." Against my better
- 26:37judgment, I let her in. She stood in my
- 26:39living room looking around like she was
- 26:41calculating the value of everything she
- 26:43could see. You've won, she said finally.
- 26:46Is that what you want to hear? You've
- 26:47successfully destroyed my marriage and
- 26:49my life. Congratulations. I didn't
- 26:51destroy anything, Sarah. I simply
- 26:53revealed what was already there. You
- 26:56know Michael will never trust another
- 26:57woman again because of this. You've made
- 26:59sure he'll be alone for the rest of his
- 27:01life, dependent on you. That stung
- 27:04because there was some truth to it.
- 27:05Michael had been devastated by the
- 27:07betrayal and he'd been clinging to me
- 27:09like a lifeline ever since. Michael will
- 27:12heal, I said. And eventually he'll find
- 27:14someone who actually loves him. Will he?
- 27:17Because right now he's drinking himself
- 27:19to sleep every night and calling me at
- 27:212:00 a.m. begging me to explain why I
- 27:24did this to him. I hadn't known about
- 27:25the calls or the drinking. What do you
- 27:28want, Sarah? I want you to give me
- 27:29something. Some kind of severance
- 27:31payment. Enough money to start over
- 27:33somewhere else. In exchange, I'll
- 27:35disappear completely. No drawn out
- 27:37divorce, no custody battle over assets,
- 27:39no lawsuits. I'll sign whatever papers
- 27:42your lawyers want and vanish. How much
- 27:44money? $2 million. I actually did laugh
- 27:47then. You must be joking. I know about
- 27:49Marcus Freeman's family suing me. I know
- 27:52about the insurance companies
- 27:53investigating David Park's death. If
- 27:55this divorce gets nasty, if it goes to
- 27:57trial, all of that will come out. The
- 27:59media will have a field day. Michael's
- 28:01name will be associated with mine in
- 28:03every news story about Black Widow
- 28:05wives. She was right about that. A
- 28:08sensational trial would destroy
- 28:09Michael's reputation along with hers.
- 28:12And if I pay you $2 million, you'll just
- 28:14disappear. I'll move to a different
- 28:16country. Change my name again. Start
- 28:18over. Michael can get a quiet divorce
- 28:21for irreconcilable differences. And his
- 28:23name stays out of the papers. I
- 28:25pretended to consider it. That's quite
- 28:26an offer. But I have a counter proposal.
- 28:29What? Nothing. You get nothing. You sign
- 28:32the divorce papers accepting full
- 28:33responsibility for the breakdown of the
- 28:35marriage. You wave any claim to assets
- 28:37or alimony, and you disappear anyway.
- 28:40Why would I agree to that? I walked to
- 28:42my desk and pulled out yet another
- 28:43folder. Sarah's face went pale when she
- 28:46saw it. Because Carmen's investigation
- 28:48turned up something very interesting
- 28:50about David Park's death. The insurance
- 28:52company wasn't the only one asking
- 28:54questions. His family hired their own
- 28:56investigator, and that investigator
- 28:58found some fascinating evidence. What
- 29:00evidence? Security camera footage from a
- 29:02neighbor's house showing you leaving
- 29:04David's home at 11:47 p.m. the night he
- 29:07died. Footage that clearly shows you
- 29:09coming back at 1:23 a.m. Staying for
- 29:12exactly 4 minutes, then leaving again.
- 29:15Sarah sat down hard in my armchair.
- 29:18That's impossible. The time stamp is
- 29:20very clear. David's body was found at
- 29:22the bottom of the stairs the next
- 29:24morning. But according to the coroner,
- 29:26he died between midnight and 2:00 a.m.,
- 29:28which means you were there right around
- 29:30the time he died. I went back because I
- 29:32forgot my purse for 4 minutes. And you
- 29:35didn't think to mention this to the
- 29:37police at the time. She was trapped and
- 29:39she knew it. The security footage
- 29:40wouldn't be enough to convict her of
- 29:42murder, but it would be enough to reopen
- 29:44the investigation. And if they reopened
- 29:47David Park's case, they'd probably take
- 29:49another look at Marcus Freeman's death,
- 29:51too. What do you want me to do? She
- 29:53whispered. I want you to sign a
- 29:55confession. A confession to what? To
- 29:57fraud. To knowingly entering into
- 30:00marriage under false pretenses with the
- 30:02intent to defraud my son of his assets.
- 30:05Nothing about the deaths, nothing about
- 30:07the previous marriages, just a simple
- 30:09admission that you lied about your
- 30:11identity and your motives. If I sign
- 30:13that, I could go to jail. Maybe. Or
- 30:16maybe the district attorney will be
- 30:17satisfied with restitution and community
- 30:19service, especially if you cooperate
- 30:22fully and leave the state voluntarily.
- 30:24She stared at the floor for a long time.
- 30:26And if I don't sign it, then I give this
- 30:29security footage to the Hartford police
- 30:31along with all the other evidence Carmen
- 30:33found, and we'll see how well your new
- 30:35lawyer handles a murder investigation on
- 30:37top of a divorce case. The silence
- 30:39stretched between us for several
- 30:41minutes. Finally, she looked up at me
- 30:43with something that might have been
- 30:44respect. You really are a scary old
- 30:47woman. I'm a mother protecting her
- 30:48child. That makes me the most dangerous
- 30:50thing in the world. She signed the
- 30:52confession that afternoon. Within a
- 30:54week, she'd filed for divorce on no
- 30:56fault grounds, waving all claims to
- 30:58Michael's assets. Within a month, she'd
- 31:01left Connecticut entirely. Michael never
- 31:03knew about the confession or the
- 31:05security footage. As far as he knew,
- 31:07Sophia had just decided to leave quietly
- 31:10rather than fight a losing battle. He
- 31:12was hurt and angry and confused, but he
- 31:15was safe. The drinking stopped after a
- 31:17few weeks. The late night phone calls
- 31:19ended when her number was disconnected.
- 31:21Slowly, very slowly, my son started to
- 31:24heal. "Mom," he said one afternoon,
- 31:27about 2 months after she'd left, "I owe
- 31:29you an apology. A big one. You don't owe
- 31:31me anything, sweetheart." "Yes, I do. I
- 31:34chose her over you. I accused you of
- 31:36being jealous and controlling when you
- 31:38were just trying to protect me. I threw
- 31:40you out of my own wedding. You were in
- 31:42love. People do stupid things when
- 31:44they're in love. I hurt you. Really hurt
- 31:46you. And you saved me anyway. I thought
- 31:49about that night in the mansion,
- 31:51watching Sarah's face when she realized
- 31:53I'd trapped her completely. I thought
- 31:55about the look in her eyes when she
- 31:56signed that confession, knowing she'd
- 31:58finally met someone more ruthless than
- 32:00she was. That's what mothers do, I said.
- 32:03We protect our children even when they
- 32:05don't want to be protected. How did you
- 32:07know she was lying about everything,
- 32:09even before the detective called? I
- 32:11smiled, remembering the first time I'd
- 32:13met her at that tennis club lunch.
- 32:15Instinct mostly. Something about her
- 32:17just felt wrong. She was too perfect,
- 32:19too eager to please, too interested in
- 32:21all the wrong things. What wrong things?
- 32:23She asked about your father's estate
- 32:25before she asked about your favorite
- 32:27color. She knew your net worth before
- 32:29she knew your middle name. When someone
- 32:31loves you, they want to know who you
- 32:33are. When someone's using you, they want
- 32:35to know what you're worth. Michael
- 32:37nodded slowly. I should have seen it.
- 32:39No, sweetheart. You should have been
- 32:41able to trust that the woman you married
- 32:43actually loved you. The fact that you
- 32:45couldn't see through her lies just means
- 32:46you're a good person who expects the
- 32:48best from people. Like Dad was, exactly
- 32:51like Dad. And that's not something to be
- 32:53ashamed of. We sat quietly for a while,
- 32:56watching the sun set through my kitchen
- 32:58window. Finally, Michael spoke again.
- 33:00Mom, how do I make sure this never
- 33:02happens again? How do I trust anyone
- 33:05after this? Carefully, I said, but you
- 33:07will trust again eventually because the
- 33:10alternative is spending your life alone.
- 33:12And that's exactly what she wanted. She
- 33:14wanted to poison you against love so
- 33:16completely that you'd never risk your
- 33:18heart again. Maybe that would be safer.
- 33:21Safer, yes, but not happier. And your
- 33:24father didn't raise you to choose safe
- 33:26over happy. Michael smiled for the first
- 33:28time in months. No, he didn't. Besides,
- 33:31I added, "Next time you'll have the
- 33:33advantage of a very paranoid mother who
- 33:35knows exactly how to run a background
- 33:37check." He laughed, and the sound filled
- 33:39my heart with relief. My son was going
- 33:41to be okay. It would take time, but he
- 33:44was going to be okay. And if anyone else
- 33:46ever tried to hurt him, well, they'd
- 33:48find out what I'd learned about myself
- 33:49during this whole ordeal. There's
- 33:51nothing more dangerous than a mother
- 33:53who's discovered she's capable of
- 33:55anything. Six months later, Michael
- 33:57started dating again. Her name was
- 33:59Jennifer. She was a pediatric nurse, and
- 34:01the first thing she did when she met me
- 34:03was show me pictures of her family.
- 34:05"This is my mom and dad at their 40th
- 34:07anniversary party," she said, scrolling
- 34:10through her phone. "And this is my
- 34:11sister with her kids. And here's my
- 34:13brother at his graduation from medical
- 34:15school. Real family, real history, real
- 34:18life that could be verified by anyone
- 34:21who cared to look." "She seems lovely,"
- 34:23I told Michael later. She is. And mom. I
- 34:26had Carmen run a background check on
- 34:28her. I smiled. And Jennifer Marie
- 34:31Thompson, 29 years old, born in Boston,
- 34:34graduated from nursing school with
- 34:35honors, no previous marriages, no
- 34:38criminal record, and her biggest debt is
- 34:41her student loans. Suspicious, I said
- 34:43dryly. She sounds entirely too normal. I
- 34:46know, right? It's weird dating someone
- 34:48who's actually honest about everything.
- 34:503 months later, Michael brought Jennifer
- 34:52to Sunday dinner for the first time. She
- 34:54arrived with a bouquet of flowers for me
- 34:56and a homemade apple pie. "I hope this
- 34:59is okay," she said nervously. "Michael
- 35:01mentioned you like to bake, and I didn't
- 35:03want to assume I could compete with your
- 35:05recipes, but my grandmother's apple pie
- 35:07was always her specialty. I took a bite
- 35:09and nearly moaned with pleasure."
- 35:11"Jennifer, this is absolutely delicious.
- 35:13Would you share the recipe?" "Of course.
- 35:15Actually, I was hoping you might teach
- 35:17me some of your techniques." Michael
- 35:19raves about your cooking. After dinner,
- 35:21while Michael was loading the
- 35:22dishwasher, Jennifer helped me package
- 35:25up leftovers in the kitchen. Mrs. Walsh,
- 35:27can I ask you something personal? Of
- 35:29course, dear. Michael told me about his
- 35:31first marriage. Not all the details, but
- 35:34enough. I just want you to know that I
- 35:36understand why you might be protective
- 35:37of him. I studied her face, looking for
- 35:40any sign of calculation or manipulation.
- 35:43I found only genuine concern. I
- 35:45appreciate that, Jennifer. I also want
- 35:47you to know that I don't expect you to
- 35:49trust me right away. I know I have to
- 35:51earn that, but I hope eventually you'll
- 35:54see that I really do love your son. What
- 35:56makes you love him? I asked. She smiled.
- 35:58And it was the kind of smile that
- 36:00transformed her whole face. He's kind
- 36:02without being weak. He's successful
- 36:04without being arrogant. He treats
- 36:06waiters and janitors the same way he
- 36:08treats his boss. And when he talks about
- 36:10you, his whole face lights up. Any man
- 36:13who loves his mother that much is
- 36:15someone I want to know better. That
- 36:17night after they'd left, I called
- 36:18Carmen. I need another favor, I said.
- 36:21Let me guess. Jennifer Thompson. You
- 36:23already ran a check on her, didn't you?
- 36:25Of course I did. The moment Michael
- 36:27started dating her. Seriously. She's
- 36:29exactly what she appears to be. Dorothy.
- 36:31A nice woman from a nice family who
- 36:33happens to love your son. No hidden
- 36:35marriages. No mysterious deaths of
- 36:37ex-boyfriends. Carmen laughed. Her
- 36:39longest relationship before Michael was
- 36:41with a guy named Steve who broke up with
- 36:43her because she wanted kids and he
- 36:45didn't. He's now happily married to
- 36:47someone else and speaks very highly of
- 36:49her. Her biggest scandal is a parking
- 36:51ticket she got in college. So, she's
- 36:53perfect. She's normal, which probably
- 36:55seems perfect after what Michael went
- 36:57through. I hung up feeling something I
- 36:59hadn't felt in a long time. Hope. My son
- 37:02had found someone who loved him for
- 37:04himself, not for what he could give her.
- 37:06A year later, Michael proposed to
- 37:08Jennifer in my backyard garden, right
- 37:10next to the rose bushes his father had
- 37:12planted. She said yes through happy
- 37:14tears, and the first thing she did after
- 37:16putting on the ring was hug me. "I hope
- 37:18this means I get to call you mom," she
- 37:20whispered. "I'd be honored," I whispered
- 37:23back. The wedding was small and
- 37:24intimate, held in the same garden where
- 37:26they'd gotten engaged. Jennifer's family
- 37:28flew in from Boston, and they were
- 37:30exactly as warm and genuine as she was.
- 37:33Her father walked her down the aisle,
- 37:35but he stopped to shake my hand before
- 37:37giving her away. Thank you for raising
- 37:39such a wonderful man, he said. We
- 37:42couldn't be happier about this marriage.
- 37:44This time, I sat in the front row with
- 37:46tears of joy streaming down my face.
- 37:48This time, no one screamed at me to
- 37:50leave. This time, I watched my son marry
- 37:53someone who actually deserved him.
- 37:55During his speech at the reception,
- 37:56Michael looked directly at me. I want to
- 37:59thank my mother for never giving up on
- 38:01me, even when I was too stupid to listen
- 38:03to her wisdom. Mom, you saved my life in
- 38:06more ways than one. And I love you more
- 38:08than I can ever express. Jennifer's made
- 38:10of honor speech was even better. I've
- 38:12never seen a mother and son who love
- 38:14each other as purely as Michael and
- 38:16Dorothy. She said, "Dorothy didn't just
- 38:18raise a son. She raised a man who knows
- 38:21how to love without conditions, how to
- 38:23trust without being naive, and how to
- 38:25protect the people he cares about. Any
- 38:27woman lucky enough to marry into this
- 38:29family knows she's getting not just a
- 38:31husband, but a role model for what
- 38:33unconditional love looks like. That
- 38:35night, as I watched my son and his new
- 38:37wife dance to their wedding song, I
- 38:39thought about Sarah Martinez. Wherever
- 38:42she was, I hoped she'd found whatever it
- 38:44was she was really looking for, and I
- 38:46hoped it didn't involve destroying
- 38:47anyone else's life. But mostly, I
- 38:50thought about the lesson I'd learned
- 38:51through this whole ordeal. Sometimes
- 38:53protecting the people you love means
- 38:55being willing to become someone you
- 38:56never thought you could be. Sometimes
- 38:58love requires you to be ruthless,
- 39:00calculating, and absolutely unforgiving.
- 39:03I'd always thought of myself as a gentle
- 39:05person, someone who avoided conflict,
- 39:08and trusted others to do the right
- 39:09thing. But when my son's happiness was
- 39:11threatened, I'd discovered I was capable
- 39:13of things that would have shocked the
- 39:15old Dorothy Walsh. I'd hired
- 39:17investigators, manipulated security
- 39:19systems, obtained evidence through
- 39:21questionable means, and ultimately
- 39:23forced a confession through what was
- 39:25essentially blackmail. A year ago, I
- 39:28would have been horrified by those
- 39:30actions. Now, watching Michael and
- 39:32Jennifer laugh together at their headt,
- 39:34I felt nothing but satisfaction. I'd
- 39:36done what was necessary to protect my
- 39:38child, and I'd do it again in a
- 39:40heartbeat. The next morning, Jennifer
- 39:43brought me coffee in bed and thanked me
- 39:45for the most beautiful wedding she could
- 39:47have imagined. Dorothy, I hope you know
- 39:49that I consider myself the luckiest
- 39:51woman in the world. Not just because I
- 39:53married Michael, but because I married
- 39:55into a family where love means
- 39:57everything. Welcome to the family,
- 39:58sweetheart, I said, hugging her tight.
- 40:01And thank you for making my son so
- 40:03happy. As she headed downstairs to make
- 40:05breakfast for her new husband, I sat in
- 40:07bed thinking about how much my life had
- 40:09changed. A year and a half ago, I'd been
- 40:12a naive widow who trusted everyone and
- 40:14assumed the best about people. I'd
- 40:16learned the hard way that the world
- 40:18contained predators who viewed kindness
- 40:21as weakness and love as opportunity. But
- 40:24I'd also learned that I was stronger
- 40:26than I'd ever imagined. When pushed to
- 40:28my limits, I could be every bit as
- 40:30cunning and ruthless as any con artist.
- 40:32The difference was that I used those
- 40:34skills to protect instead of exploit, to
- 40:37defend instead of attack. My phone
- 40:40buzzed with a text from an unknown
- 40:42number. I saw the wedding announcement
- 40:44in the paper. Congratulations to Michael
- 40:46and his new wife. I hope they'll be very
- 40:48happy together. S. Sarah Martinez
- 40:51checking in from whatever new life she'd
- 40:53built for herself. I stared at the
- 40:55message for a long moment, then deleted
- 40:57it without responding. Some chapters of
- 40:59life are meant to stay closed. I got up,
- 41:01put on my robe, and went downstairs to
- 41:03join my son and daughter-in-law for
- 41:05breakfast. My real family, the one built
- 41:07on truth and love and mutual respect.
- 41:10"Good morning, Mom," Michael said,
- 41:12kissing my cheek. "Sleep well?"
- 41:13"Perfectly," I said, and meant it.
- 41:16"After everything we'd been through,
- 41:18everything I'd had to do to protect him,
- 41:20this was what mattered. My son was safe,
- 41:22happy, and loved by someone who deserved
- 41:25him. Sometimes the best revenge isn't
- 41:27getting even. Sometimes the best revenge
- 41:29is simply ensuring that good people get
- 41:31the happy endings they deserve. And
- 41:33sometimes being a good mother means
- 41:36being willing to be the villain in
- 41:37someone else's story. I poured myself
- 41:39coffee and sat down with my family.
- 41:42Finally at peace with both the woman I'd
- 41:44been and the woman I'd had to become. If
- 41:47you're watching this story, I want you
- 41:49to remember something. Never
- 41:50underestimate a mother protecting her
- 41:52child. We're capable of anything when
- 41:55the people we love are threatened. And
- 41:56to any predators out there thinking you
- 41:58can target someone's family, think
- 42:00again. Because somewhere out there is a
- 42:02mother like me and we're always
- 42:04watching.
- 42:06Thanks for listening. Don't forget
