My Sister Was The Shortest Girl In School: She Didn't Care — Transcript
Full transcript
- 0:00Hi, my name is Daphne and I'm 2 years
- 0:03older than my little sister Lily. She
- 0:05was always too small for her age. At 8
- 0:07years old, she was barely 2 and 1/2 ft
- 0:09tall. She was reckless, stubborn, and
- 0:11honestly had zero survival instincts,
- 0:14especially when people made fun of her
- 0:15height. But she was my little sister and
- 0:17I loved her more than anything. [music]
- 0:19And yeah, my stepmom was one of those
- 0:21people. When mom passed away, I was 10
- 0:23and Lily was 8. [music] I tried to stay
- 0:25strong, but Lily never really knew how
- 0:27to deal with it. She just got angrier,
- 0:30louder, and more impossible every year.
- 0:32Then dad married this annoying, fake
- 0:35sweet woman named Patricia.
- 0:37>> [music]
- 0:37>> She was spoiled and obsessed with
- 0:39looking rich. She had dad working long
- 0:41hours, so we barely saw him while she
- 0:44spent his money on parties, clothes, and
- 0:46pretending she was better than [music]
- 0:47everyone.
- 0:48>> You know, Daphne, you're so calm and
- 0:51elegant. You remind me of myself. But
- 0:54that devil sister of yours, God, she's
- 0:56like some angry little dwarf.
- 0:58>> Did someone say elf? Oh, finally.
- 1:01>> What are you talking about?
- 1:03>> Well, I've been collecting a dwarf every
- 1:05time someone calls me that.
- 1:07>> Then she opened the box she was holding
- 1:08[music] and inside were six tiny dwarf
- 1:11figurines. Three of them belonged to my
- 1:13stepmom.
- 1:14>> Uh-uh-uh, put those back in the garden.
- 1:16My mother brought those from Paris. And
- 1:18where did you get the other three? They
- 1:20look expensive.
- 1:21>> Mhm, two I stole from the neighbors and
- 1:24one from an antique shop.
- 1:25>> Really? Stop stealing people's things.
- 1:29Give them back right now.
- 1:30>> Says the woman who stole dad from us.
- 1:33And you just called me an elf, Patricia.
- 1:36So now I need a seventh one.
- 1:39Actually, you already jinxed it. I'll
- 1:41start over.
- 1:42>> And with that, she flipped the box over
- 1:45and all the elves shattered on the
- 1:46floor. My stepmom gasped and dropped to
- 1:49her knees clutching the broken pieces
- 1:51like someone had just murdered her
- 1:52children.
- 1:53>> You're grounded.
- 1:55>> But Lily just raised an eyebrow and
- 1:56walked right out of the house. I kept
- 1:58yelling after her to come back, but she
- 2:00didn't even turn around. [music]
- 2:02And it was already so late. I ran after
- 2:04her and searched all over town until I
- 2:06finally found her inside a fancy
- 2:08restaurant sitting with some rich family
- 2:10and wearing a huge hat that covered half
- 2:12her face. I grabbed her arm and pulled
- 2:14her away from the table, and that was
- 2:16when the mother finally looked up and
- 2:17screamed.
- 2:19>> Where's my daughter? She's only three.
- 2:22>> Relax. Your daughter's tied up in the
- 2:24bathroom. Also, this steak is trash. So,
- 2:27I'm giving this a one star on Google
- 2:29with a picture from my phone. And none
- 2:33of you noticed a three-year-old had a
- 2:34phone?
- 2:35Wow. Talk about neglect.
- 2:38>> I dragged her out as fast as I could.
- 2:40>> Ugh. You're such a buzzkill, Daph.
- 2:43>> And that was basically my life. I was
- 2:45always trying to keep the peace at home,
- 2:47stopping Lily from doing [music]
- 2:49something stupid, and begging my stepmom
- 2:51to forgive her whenever she did. Lily
- 2:53and I were the [music] complete opposite
- 2:55of each other. I had straight A's and
- 2:57was the polite, well-behaved girl, while
- 2:59Lily spent [music] more time in
- 3:01detention than in her actual classes.
- 3:03Every time someone made fun of her
- 3:05height, she answered [music] back, which
- 3:06only made them tease her even harder.
- 3:09And then, she'd snap again, and the
- 3:11whole cycle would start all over. But
- 3:13then, [music] Lily took things way too
- 3:15far. During her freshman year, she
- 3:17actually stole an expensive diamond
- 3:19bracelet worth $150,000.
- 3:22>> Here. I got it for you, Daphne. It
- 3:24[music] looks like the one Mommy used to
- 3:25wear, remember? Before Dad sold it and
- 3:27bought stupid Patricia a bigger, newer
- 3:30one.
- 3:30>> Lily, no. You can't just But before I
- 3:33could even finish my sentence, the cops
- 3:35were at the door. That time, they only
- 3:36gave Lily a warning, but then she did it
- 3:39again, and again, and again. Until one
- 3:42night, she stole a limited edition gold
- 3:45watch covered in diamonds right off a
- 3:47rich old man's wrist. Even after we gave
- 3:49it back, he refused to drop the charges.
- 3:52>> I've had that watch for 57 years. My
- 3:57late cousin gave it to me. Let her rot
- 4:00in jail and learn her lesson.
- 4:04>> I begged him. I cried, but it was no
- 4:07use. A few days later the judge slammed
- 4:09her gavel and sentenced to Lily to 27
- 4:12months in juvie. My stepmom [music] was
- 4:14the happiest of all, but I didn't argue
- 4:16with her because there was no point.
- 4:19Then one day I went to visit Lily in
- 4:21juvie. I was sitting in the visitors
- 4:23room at a table when the guard walked
- 4:24Lily in. She looked tired and kept her
- 4:27head down, but the second she saw me her
- 4:29face [music] lit up and she ran over to
- 4:31hug me. Are you safe here?
- 4:33>> Anywhere is better than [music] staying
- 4:35with Patricia.
- 4:36>> Come on, she's not that bad.
- 4:38>> Not to you. To me, she's a jerk. [music]
- 4:41She bullies me and calls me names.
- 4:43>> But just then another girl sitting
- 4:45nearby with her mom [music] glared at
- 4:47Lily and punched her fist into her palm
- 4:49like she was threatening her. I was calm
- 4:51and polite, but when it came to my
- 4:53little sister I turned into a lioness.
- 4:56Excuse me, what's your problem?
- 4:58>> Are you that clown's sister? How does it
- 5:00feel living with a disaster?
- 5:02>> I don't know. I'd have to ask your mom.
- 5:04>> At least I have one.
- 5:05>> Wow, how did they even allow you in
- 5:08here? I thought boys weren't allowed.
- 5:11Her mom gasped and looked offended.
- 5:13>> That's right. You should have raised
- 5:15your son better, ma'am.
- 5:16>> Lily kept begging me to stop until the
- 5:18guard finally came over and pulled both
- 5:20Lily and that stupid girl away. On my
- 5:23way home I couldn't stop thinking
- 5:24[music] about Lily. Was she suffering in
- 5:26there? And no matter how angry I was at
- 5:28her, I couldn't help feeling sad. But
- 5:31then on my way home the Uber driver kept
- 5:33getting lost. When I spotted the grocery
- 5:35store near our house, I told her to stop
- 5:37there and said I could walk the rest of
- 5:39the way. [music] I had only taken a few
- 5:41steps when I noticed the grocery store's
- 5:43glass door was shattered like there
- 5:45there been a robbery. I stepped inside
- 5:47and found the cashier lying on the
- 5:48floor. Then I saw a knife nearby and
- 5:50picked it up to check it. Thankfully,
- 5:52there [music] was no blood on it, but
- 5:53when I opened the cashier's fist, I
- 5:55found him clutching a bunch of dollar
- 5:57bills. I took the money planning to put
- 5:59it back in the cash register. [music]
- 6:00Then I tried to call 911, but my phone
- 6:03was dead. I started looking for a store
- 6:05phone or a charger, yanking open drawers
- 6:07like crazy, but I couldn't find
- 6:09anything. Suddenly, I heard sirens
- 6:11outside followed by a police officer's
- 6:13voice through a speaker.
- 6:15>> Put your hands where we can see them and
- 6:17walk out slowly.
- 6:19>> I was so shocked. There had been some
- 6:21kind of misunderstanding, so I rushed
- 6:23toward them. You've got it all wrong. I
- 6:25came in and but just [music] then, an
- 6:27officer fired a warning shot into the
- 6:29air and I froze.
- 6:30>> STOP WHERE YOU ARE. GET ON THE GROUND
- 6:32and put your hands behind your back.
- 6:35>> Seconds later, I was on the floor and
- 6:36soon after that, I was dragged to the
- 6:38police station. All the evidence was
- 6:40against me. [music] I had touched the
- 6:42knife, picked up the money, and the
- 6:43CCTV, which only started [music] working
- 6:45once I was inside the store, showed me
- 6:47running around and opening drawers like
- 6:49a maniac. I begged them to listen,
- 6:52[music] but the more I tried to explain,
- 6:54the guiltier I sounded. And to make
- 6:56everything even worse, the cashier
- 6:57[music] was in a coma, so he couldn't
- 6:59wake up and tell everyone I wasn't the
- 7:00robber.
- 7:01>> Yeah, she asked me to drop her off right
- 7:03next to that store. Did I think it was
- 7:05suspicious? Absolutely. But my mama
- 7:08didn't raise me to be nosy, so I ain't
- 7:09say nothing.
- 7:10>> My whole life was falling apart and no
- 7:13one believed me. Just like that, [music]
- 7:15the judge sent me to juvie until my 21st
- 7:17birthday.
- 7:19>> I can't believe this. Daphne, my
- 7:22favorite stepdaughter. Now you're stuck
- 7:24seeing Lily every day. Oh, God be with
- 7:27you, sweetheart.
- 7:29>> And just like that, they took me away.
- 7:32I arrived at the juvie reception with
- 7:34Officer Sarah. And let me tell you, she
- 7:36was the absolute worst. She didn't even
- 7:39call me by my name. You're inmate 235
- 7:42from now on. If I call that number, you
- 7:45get your butt up and answer like a good
- 7:46little girl. Got it?
- 7:48>> Yes, ma'am. When I walked in, I saw a
- 7:50bunch of girls holding a skinny girl in
- 7:52front of someone I immediately
- 7:54recognized from the visiting [music]
- 7:55room. It was Harper.
- 7:57>> How dare you hide your vape from me,
- 7:59Jenny? I've always said if anyone sneaks
- 8:01anything [music] in, I get a cut. That's
- 8:04the rule.
- 8:04>> Oh my god, do you think you're in some
- 8:06kind of movie, you idiot? Everyone
- 8:09gasped. And Harper slowly turned around.
- 8:11>> Oh, it's you. So, you want to end up
- 8:14like your sister?
- 8:15>> Where is she?
- 8:16>> The same place anyone who challenges me
- 8:18goes.
- 8:19>> I had no idea what that meant, but it
- 8:21only made me more determined to kick her
- 8:22butt. So, I marched over to her and
- 8:25raised my hand to slap her. But Harper
- 8:27caught my wrist midair.
- 8:29>> Careful there, honey.
- 8:31Officer Sarah, we have a situation.
- 8:33>> And just then, Officer Sarah barged in
- 8:35and yanked me away. She dragged me to a
- 8:38tiny cell for solitary. Later, I found
- 8:40out Harper was rich and powerful, and
- 8:42she bribed everyone, including that jerk
- 8:45Officer Sarah.
- 8:46But just then, I noticed a small figure
- 8:48sitting in the corner.
- 8:49>> [music]
- 8:50>> Lilly?
- 8:51>> Oh, sweetie, are you okay?
- 8:53>> Daphne? What are you doing here?
- 8:55>> Well, I'm here by mistake.
- 8:58>> I explained everything to Lilly.
- 9:00But then she smirked.
- 9:02>> It's funny. You spent your whole life
- 9:04acting like [music] the good daughter,
- 9:06while everyone treated me like the
- 9:07family disaster.
- 9:09>> What? No, Lilly.
- 9:11>> Save it. You always had it in you. Now
- 9:14everyone finally sees what a hypocrite
- 9:16you [music] are.
- 9:17>> I didn't know what to say. Did she think
- 9:19I was guilty? Was that really how she
- 9:21saw [music] me? After everything I'd
- 9:23done for her? Or had this place changed
- 9:25her that much? [music] Then she pulled
- 9:27away and went back to her corner, and we
- 9:29sat in silence for hours.
- 9:32The next day, [music] I met my cellmate,
- 9:33Jenny. I asked her how things worked
- 9:35around here, and she filled me in.
- 9:38>> Thanks for trying to save me yesterday.
- 9:40Harper runs this place. She even steals
- 9:42flat irons from the hair workshop, and
- 9:44that's super against the rules. She's
- 9:46been bullying your sister, too, but Lily
- 9:49started standing up to her, just like
- 9:51you did.
- 9:52>> [music]
- 9:52>> And ended up like me in the hole.
- 9:54Then Jenny suddenly grabbed my hand and
- 9:56looked confused.
- 9:58>> Wait, I can't [music] read your palm,
- 10:00and I read palms all the time. Yours is
- 10:04weird. Like your hand [music] can't make
- 10:06up its mind.
- 10:07>> I'm just a complicated person. What can
- 10:10I say? [music] Maybe watching MSA made
- 10:12me emotionally stable and smart. Their
- 10:14stories always come with a twist and a
- 10:15lesson.
- 10:16>> Oh, I know. I've been subscribed [music]
- 10:18since 2019. Last time Harper used her
- 10:21brain. So, like and subscribe, guys,
- 10:23>> [music]
- 10:23>> cuz if MSA taught me anything, it's that
- 10:25brainless bullies always get what's
- 10:27coming.
- 10:28>> We both laughed, and Jenny told me she
- 10:30did palm readings for Harper, too. But
- 10:33whenever Harper didn't like what she
- 10:34heard, she'd bully Jenny nonstop. Well,
- 10:37my sister and I are about to change
- 10:39that.
- 10:41>> [music]
- 10:41>> The next day during lunch, I told Lily
- 10:43my plan. Listen, we can work together.
- 10:45You can be the mastermind and [music]
- 10:47come up with your crazy plans, and I'll
- 10:49be there to protect you.
- 10:50>> I'm not as smart as you.
- 10:51>> You mean you don't have a criminal mind
- 10:54like me?
- 10:55>> No, Lily. I mean, we can [music] work
- 10:57together. I can protect you.
- 10:59>> Who says I need protection from you?
- 11:02>> Why are you being like this, sweetie?
- 11:04>> Stop calling me sweetie. You're not my
- 11:07mom, and if anyone hears you say that in
- 11:09here, they'll roast us forever.
- 11:12>> Well, I don't [music] care what they
- 11:13say.
- 11:14>> Well, I do. And by the way, I already
- 11:16have a plan.
- 11:17>> [music]
- 11:17>> I'm getting closer to Harper. I'll
- 11:19become her right-hand girl, then take
- 11:21her down from the inside. So, please,
- 11:25don't do anything [music] stupid.
- 11:26>> Then she got up and walked away.
- 11:28Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed
- 11:30Harper watching [music] us. Then she
- 11:32smirked. That night, I found out they
- 11:34had changed Lily's cell. She used to be
- 11:37next to mine, but they moved her to the
- 11:38exact opposite [music] side, closer to
- 11:40Harper. Later, I realized Harper had
- 11:42told Officer Sarah to move her just to
- 11:44mess with me.
- 11:46Days went by [music] like that. Lily
- 11:47kept ignoring me, and I could see her
- 11:49trying to talk to Harper, even though it
- 11:51always ended with Harper and her girls
- 11:53laughing at her. [music] But, whenever
- 11:54Harper tried to mess with me, I had a
- 11:56comeback ready, which meant I got sent
- 11:58to the hole almost every time. Juvey had
- 12:01classes where they taught us English and
- 12:03math. [music] So, one day during math, I
- 12:05was doing great and answering every
- 12:07question, and apparently, [music]
- 12:09that annoyed Harper.
- 12:10>> Just shut up, Daphne. Your voice annoys
- 12:12me.
- 12:13>> My voice or your stupidity? Harper and
- 12:15her [laughter] girls gasped. I glanced
- 12:17at Lily, and she was silently begging me
- 12:19to stop, but Harper noticed before I
- 12:21could look away.
- 12:22>> Hey, shorty. Come here.
- 12:24Since you're so desperate to be one of
- 12:26us, I'm finally giving you a chance. Go
- 12:29slap your sister for me, and you're in.
- 12:32>> Lily looked shocked, frozen in place
- 12:34until I gave her a small nod. Then, she
- 12:36slowly walked over to me.
- 12:38>> Do it, sis. I forgive you.
- 12:39>> And just like that, Lily slapped me.
- 12:42Hard. Everyone stared. I clutched my
- 12:45cheek in pain, but then Lily slapped my
- 12:47other cheek, too. I stared at her,
- 12:50stunned, but she slapped me again, then
- 12:53again. I wasn't sure if this was part of
- 12:55her plan anymore,
- 12:56>> [music]
- 12:56>> but I trusted her enough to stand there
- 12:58and take it.
- 12:59>> Ooh, doing extra to impress [music] me.
- 13:02I like it. You're in.
- 13:04>> Lily smiled wide and went to sit next to
- 13:06Harper, while I stood there with my
- 13:07hands on my cheeks, [music] shooting her
- 13:09a death glare so intense, I could have
- 13:11melted the lunch trays. I thought it
- 13:13[music] was all an act, but Lily started
- 13:15taking it way too seriously. She got
- 13:17more and more involved in Harper's mess,
- 13:20eating beside her at the table with the
- 13:21best food, while the rest of us suffered
- 13:23[music] through half-cooked rice and
- 13:25watery beans. Even her hair always
- 13:27looked perfect now because they [music]
- 13:29forced Jenny to do it for them. And even
- 13:31officer Sarah started calling her Lily
- 13:33instead of her number.
- 13:35I understood that maybe Lily was trying
- 13:37to fit in so she could take Harper down,
- 13:39but that felt impossible. Harper was the
- 13:42daughter of a rich Wall [music] Street
- 13:43guy and he would do anything to keep her
- 13:45happy. Our dad was just an average man
- 13:48who was barely ever around, but Lily
- 13:50wouldn't listen to any of that. She
- 13:52acted like she knew exactly what she was
- 13:54doing. Then one day stepmom came to
- 13:56visit us.
- 13:57>> Girls, I missed you so so much. I
- 14:01brought you gifts. I told my friends
- 14:03your father sent you to boarding school.
- 14:05I mean, I'm obviously not going to tell
- 14:06anyone my girls are jailbirds now.
- 14:09>> [laughter]
- 14:09>> Anyway, Daphne, my favorite, I got you
- 14:12these word puzzle magazines and Sudoku
- 14:14books and all that complicated stuff
- 14:16because you're just the smartest girl
- 14:18I've ever met. And for you, Lily.
- 14:22Well, I got you this.
- 14:24>> Then she handed Lily a swimsuit and
- 14:26goggles.
- 14:27>> What am I supposed to do with this?
- 14:29>> Oh, I thought they gave you swimming
- 14:31classes here.
- 14:32>> Oh, yeah. And spa days and massages,
- 14:36too.
- 14:37>> Then Lily noticed the receipt [music]
- 14:38stuck to the bag and gasped.
- 14:41>> Oh my god. Did you buy this on your way
- 14:43here? From a gas station?
- 14:45>> She threw it on the table and walked
- 14:47away even though I kept calling after
- 14:49her. I knew those two didn't get along,
- 14:51but I'd hoped stepmom would show Lily a
- 14:53little more love, especially now.
- 14:55>> The warden told me Lily has become a big
- 14:58bully here and I know you must be
- 15:00suffering because of her. She slapped
- 15:02you or something?
- 15:03>> It's part of her plan.
- 15:05>> Oh, darling. Sometimes you're not as
- 15:08smart as you sound. People like Lily are
- 15:12thieves. They're born that way and they
- 15:14stay that way.
- 15:16Anyway, I'm late for brunch with my
- 15:18girls. [music] I'll keep you in my
- 15:19prayers, Daphne. Stay strong.
- 15:22Mwah. And then she left. I sat there
- 15:25thinking about everything [music]
- 15:26until Officer Sarah barked at me. Inmate
- 15:29235, you waiting for room service? Get
- 15:31your butt up and move. Ugh, this woman
- 15:34was unbearable.
- 15:36Then one day I went to take a shower,
- 15:37[music] and when I got there I found out
- 15:39three of the five showers were broken
- 15:41and only had cold water. Harper and her
- 15:44girls were saving the hot showers for
- 15:45themselves [music]
- 15:46and for anyone who paid them. I tried
- 15:48offering one of Harper's minions a
- 15:50puzzle book, [music] but in my face and
- 15:52told me to back off. Then I saw Lily and
- 15:54Harper walking out of the bathroom
- 15:55[music] like besties with Jenny trailing
- 15:58behind them carrying makeup and hair
- 15:59products. That was when Lily noticed me.
- 16:02>> Oh, Harper. Maybe we can let Daphne use
- 16:05the hot shower. I mean, she has been
- 16:07behaving lately, hasn't she?
- 16:09>> Well, yeah, if you say so. You know
- 16:12what? A cold shower sounds great. It
- 16:14wakes you up, and I might need the
- 16:16energy if I end up knocking that smirk
- 16:18off your face, Harper. [music]
- 16:19>> And with that, I walked right past them.
- 16:21I was sure Lily didn't have a plan
- 16:23anymore. She was just enjoying feeling
- 16:25better than me. If this was really part
- 16:27of some secret [music] plan, she would
- 16:29have told me by now, wouldn't she?
- 16:31Instead, she was acting like a mean
- 16:32little witch. [music]
- 16:34But all that changed one day when the
- 16:35math teacher announced a surprise test.
- 16:38Everyone looked like they were about to
- 16:39pass out, and then Harper slammed her
- 16:41hand on Jenny's [music] desk.
- 16:43>> Aren't you supposed to see the future or
- 16:45something? You could have warned us, you
- 16:47butt face.
- 16:48>> Then she smacked Jenny on the head. I
- 16:50stood up to defend Jenny, but Lily
- 16:52immediately stepped in front of Harper
- 16:54and crossed her arms like she was daring
- 16:56me to touch her. I rolled my eyes and
- 16:58sat back down. A few minutes later, we
- 17:01were in the middle of the test when
- 17:02[music] the door slammed open and
- 17:04Officer Sarah barged in. She scanned the
- 17:06class until her eyes landed on Harper.
- 17:08The disgust on her face looked personal.
- 17:11>> Hey, you, inmate 127. Your father got
- 17:14caught. Apparently, he's been running a
- 17:16Ponzi scheme. All that money you've been
- 17:18showing off built on lies. He's in jail
- 17:20now and you're broke, poor as dirt. The
- 17:23room went silent [music] in the ugliest
- 17:25way. Harper stared ahead trying to
- 17:27process it.
- 17:28>> You could have told me that [music] in
- 17:30private.
- 17:31>> Private? Oh, please. You are nobody now.
- 17:34I already hated you. I just liked the
- 17:36money you were paying me. Now, you're
- 17:38just like everyone [music] else in here,
- 17:40you useless, stupid waste of oxygen.
- 17:43Then Harper suddenly started crying
- 17:45[music] and Lily began comforting her.
- 17:47>> You could have been nicer
- 17:50being nice. Maybe try being nice to your
- 17:53own sister first, you lying, thieving
- 17:55little dwarf. I don't know what got into
- 17:56me at that moment. [music] Maybe it was
- 17:58the pressure of the past few days or the
- 18:00way Lily had been acting, but I just
- 18:02couldn't stand there and let Officer
- 18:03Sarah talk about my little sister like
- 18:05that. I stood up and lunged at Officer
- 18:08Sarah like a crazy person. She stumbled
- 18:11back and hit the floor hard and the
- 18:13girls started cheering like it was a
- 18:14game. Next thing I knew I was on top of
- 18:17her trying to swing, but she was
- 18:18stronger. She shoved me off and jumped
- 18:21up fast, her face bright red and next
- 18:23[music] thing I knew I was back in the
- 18:24hole. Then came new charges, another
- 18:27court hearing and a few extra months
- 18:29added to my [music] sentence. But when I
- 18:30finally got out of the hole, my life had
- 18:32completely changed. A bunch of girls
- 18:34started waving at me and running over.
- 18:36>> Destiny, hey.
- 18:39First you challenged Harper and now
- 18:40Officer Sarah. Nobody's ever done that.
- 18:43You're our hero.
- 18:45>> The girls cheered for me and Jenny
- 18:47looked the happiest.
- 18:48>> Now Harper will finally get off my back.
- 18:51She won't dare [music] ask for anything
- 18:52when you're the new boss. Besides, she's
- 18:55a nobody now.
- 18:56>> I was shocked and weirdly happy at the
- 18:58same [music] time and I couldn't wait to
- 19:00see you Lily, but she didn't show up for
- 19:03lunch or dinner. So I went to her cell
- 19:05and found her curled up on her bed.
- 19:07>> You just had to prove you're the smart
- 19:09daughter who fixes everything.
- 19:11>> Are you serious right now? That's what
- 19:13you care about?
- 19:14>> I had a plan.
- 19:15>> Your plan was to humiliate me?
- 19:17>> I had to play the part so [music] Harper
- 19:19would trust me.
- 19:20>> You could have told me that in secret.
- 19:22But, you know what, Lilly? After
- 19:23everything that's happened in here, I
- 19:25think I finally learned something about
- 19:27you. That wasn't a plan. That was you
- 19:29[music] having fun. You enjoyed watching
- 19:32me lose for once. You enjoyed seeing me
- 19:34broken, so you kept [music] going.
- 19:36>> Yes, I enjoyed it. When Mom died, you
- 19:39moved on so fast, and I hated you for
- 19:42it. I missed her every single day, but
- 19:45you were just there, living your life,
- 19:47getting perfect grades, having the
- 19:49perfect height, the perfect weight, and
- 19:51somehow becoming Patricia's perfect
- 19:53stepdaughter, too.
- 19:55>> I didn't know Lilly saw me like that. I
- 19:57always thought she acted out because
- 19:59people kept making fun of her looks and
- 20:01her height. [music]
- 20:01I never realized she was carrying that
- 20:03much pain inside, and I felt awful for
- 20:06not seeing [music] it sooner. Then,
- 20:07Lilly took a deep breath and rubbed her
- 20:09face.
- 20:11>> But, what I did was wrong.
- 20:13>> [snorts]
- 20:13>> I should have included you at some
- 20:14point. I guess I'm not as smart as you,
- 20:17Daff. And I'm really sorry.
- 20:19>> [snorts]
- 20:19>> I just need some time alone.
- 20:21>> I moved [music] closer to her, but she
- 20:23wasn't ready for that. She stepped back,
- 20:25still overwhelmed, and walked out of the
- 20:27cell. I hurried after her. I tried to
- 20:29catch [music] her, but she pushed me
- 20:31away. When I reached for her again, I
- 20:33caught her arm the wrong way, and
- 20:35somehow she lost her balance, and she
- 20:37fell down the stairs. Lilly, no! I ran
- 20:40down to her, but she wasn't moving. I
- 20:41shook her like crazy, begging her to
- 20:43wake up until the guards rushed in and
- 20:45pulled me away. Then, they took her to
- 20:47the hospital wing, and by the next
- 20:49morning, I found out she had slipped
- 20:50into a coma. They transferred her to the
- 20:52public hospital under guard, and I
- 20:54wasn't even allowed to see her.
- 20:57That night, I was sitting on [music] my
- 20:58bed, lost in thought, when Jenny came
- 21:00over and noticed my face.
- 21:04She sat beside me and took my [music]
- 21:05hand.
- 21:06>> I finally see it. You did it on purpose.
- 21:09I didn't push my sister [music] on
- 21:11purpose. Are you crazy? No, not that. I
- 21:14mean how you got here, the store
- 21:16robbery. I [music] stared into her eyes
- 21:19and for a second I saw my own
- 21:20reflection. Then everything came rushing
- 21:23back. That day after visiting Lily and
- 21:25seeing how tired [music] and bullied she
- 21:26looked, something inside me snapped. I
- 21:29kept pretending the Uber driver was
- 21:31going the wrong way when I spotted the
- 21:33grocery store near our house. I told her
- 21:35to stop [music] there and said I could
- 21:37walk the rest of the way. I planned to
- 21:39scare the cashier just enough for him to
- 21:41call the police. I wanted to get [music]
- 21:43arrested so I could end up in juvie with
- 21:45Lily and protect her. And then the
- 21:47cashier fought back. He shoved me,
- 21:49kicked me, and I panicked. I shoved him
- 21:52hard and his head hit the sharp edge of
- 21:54a shelf. What I did was super wrong and
- 21:57I never meant for that to happen. I know
- 21:59I told you guys [music] the story
- 22:00differently in the beginning, but I had
- 22:02to stick to that version. I couldn't let
- 22:04anyone know the truth, especially Lily.
- 22:07Please, Jenny. Don't tell anyone.
- 22:09Jenny promised to keep [music] my secret
- 22:11and I spent the next few days praying
- 22:13for my sister to wake up. At the same
- 22:15time I started looking out for the other
- 22:16girls in juvie, making sure no one tried
- 22:18to boss anyone around anymore. Even
- 22:21Officer [music] Sarah backed off after
- 22:22the fight. Her jaw was broken so she
- 22:24disappeared for a week [music] and
- 22:26honestly nobody missed her. A few weeks
- 22:28passed and there was still no news about
- 22:30Lily. She was still in a coma. [music]
- 22:33The only good news was that the cashier
- 22:34had finally woken up and was going to be
- 22:36okay. [music] I swear if he hadn't, I
- 22:38don't think I would have forgiven
- 22:40myself. The warden noticed how miserable
- 22:42I was and since I had been helping keep
- 22:44the peace around the place, she allowed
- 22:46me to visit Lily under guard. But what I
- 22:48saw there almost made me pass out.
- 22:51Stepmom was arguing with the doctors,
- 22:53waving her hands around like she was the
- 22:55one suffering. What's going on?
- 22:57>> Oh, Daphne, honey. I'm so glad you're
- 23:00here. The doctors say Lily's chances of
- 23:02waking up are very, very low. I called
- 23:05your father. He's overseas for work
- 23:07again. You know how he is, never around.
- 23:10And he just said, "Patricia, you handle
- 23:12it."
- 23:13Typical. So, now it's all on me. And
- 23:16we're not rich, sweetheart. So, I'm
- 23:19giving them permission to take her off
- 23:21life support. I mean, don't you think
- 23:23she's suffering?
- 23:27I stared at her in disbelief. Was she
- 23:30making this decision? Had she been this
- 23:32cruel to Lily our whole lives? And I was
- 23:35just too blind to see it because she was
- 23:36nicer to me?
- 23:46Are you out of your mind, Patricia?
- 23:49Excuse me? Life hasn't exactly been easy
- 23:52for me, either. Marrying a useless
- 23:53husband with two annoying daughters.
- 23:55You're less annoying, sure, but you're
- 23:57still his daughter. And I've made my
- 23:59decision. We're taking Lily off life
- 24:02support.
- 24:04>> [music]
- 24:09>> Pull the plug, and I'll kill you the
- 24:11same way I killed the cashier.
- 24:13Until that moment, Patricia thought I
- 24:15had been arrested by mistake. Now, she
- 24:17knew I had done it on purpose.
- 24:18>> [music]
- 24:18>> And I needed that to scare her enough to
- 24:20back off. I stepped back, and her eyes
- 24:23went wide with fear, like she'd just
- 24:25seen a ghost. Then, she swallowed,
- 24:27pulled herself together, and rushed away
- 24:29without another word. I got the room and
- 24:31saw Lily lying there. I sat beside her
- 24:34and held her hand.
- 24:36Baby, I spent my whole life trying to
- 24:38protect you when you didn't need
- 24:40protection.
- 24:41Because you're not weak or fragile,
- 24:43Lily. You're strong.
- 24:46But even strong people need love and
- 24:48attention.
- 24:49And I failed to give you that. Not just
- 24:52because you were a girl who lost her
- 24:54mom, but because you were still a girl
- 24:56who deserved to feel loved.
- 25:02And now I remember that bracelet you
- 25:04stole from me. You were wrong to take
- 25:06it,
- 25:07>> [music]
- 25:07>> obviously, but
- 25:09in your own crazy way, you were trying
- 25:11to show me you cared.
- 25:13I love you, Lily, and I forgive you. I
- 25:16just want [music] us to start over as
- 25:18strong, unbreakable sisters.
- 25:21Then I took out the diamond bracelet I
- 25:22had slipped off Patricia's wrist when I
- 25:24whispered in her ear
- 25:26>> [music]
- 25:26>> and gently placed it around Lily's
- 25:28wrist. I held her hand again.
- 25:30And suddenly,
- 25:31>> [music]
- 25:31>> I felt her weakly squeeze back.
