My Sister Was Pregnant By My Groom—My Parents Knew Before I Walked Down The Aisle — Transcript

- 0:0020 minutes before my wedding, I heard my
- 0:02mother tell my little sister, "You said
- 0:04you could keep quiet until after the
- 0:06ceremony."
- 0:07That was the agreement. I had already
- 0:10heard my sister say something about
- 0:12Bennett going through with it, but those
- 0:13were the words that stopped me cold. I
- 0:16was standing outside a storage room in
- 0:18my wedding dress, holding a folded
- 0:20seating chart. I had gone looking for
- 0:22mom because my aunt's place card was
- 0:24wrong. That's all. Then Marin said, "I'm
- 0:28the one having his baby, Mom. How long
- 0:32am I supposed to pretend?" I opened the
- 0:34door. My sister was crying. My father
- 0:38was sitting on a stack of folded chairs
- 0:40looking at the floor. Mom had Marin's
- 0:43phone in her hand. I asked whose baby
- 0:46they were talking about. Nobody
- 0:49answered. I asked if they met Bennett.
- 0:52Mom said, "Honey, not here. Not today.
- 0:57Outside, somebody was testing the
- 0:59speakers for the ceremony. I could hear
- 1:01a few notes of the song I was supposed
- 1:03to walk into. I was 33 years old, 20
- 1:07minutes away from marrying Bennett
- 1:08Sloan, and I was starting to understand
- 1:10that my 29-year-old sister might be
- 1:12carrying his baby. She confirmed what
- 1:15she knew minutes later. What I didn't
- 1:18understand yet was that both of my
- 1:19parents had known for 11 days and my
- 1:22father was still planning to walk me
- 1:24down the aisle. 3 weeks earlier, I was
- 1:27still worried about the weather, not my
- 1:29family. We lived outside Savannah,
- 1:32Georgia. I worked as a project
- 1:34coordinator for a company that designed
- 1:36commercial interiors, mostly offices and
- 1:39medical spaces.
- 1:41Bennett was a sales manager for an
- 1:43industrial equipment supplier. We had
- 1:46been together almost 5 years and engaged
- 1:48for 14 months. I handled the wedding
- 1:51spreadsheets because I was better at
- 1:53deadlines.
- 1:54Bennett handled the bar package, the
- 1:56hotel block, and most of the calls with
- 1:58his relatives.
- 2:00That arrangement felt normal to me.
- 2:03Those are the things you remember
- 2:04afterward, and they make you feel stupid
- 2:06for remembering them. Marin and I had
- 2:09never been the sisters who borrowed each
- 2:10other's clothes and told each other
- 2:12every secret. We got along though. She
- 2:16worked as an assistant manager at a
- 2:18dental clinic, a job she had finally
- 2:20settled into after a rough year. I had
- 2:23helped her polish her resume and get an
- 2:25interview. She rented a one-bedroom
- 2:28apartment about 20 minutes from our
- 2:29parents. I knew she dated, but I
- 2:32couldn't have told you who she was
- 2:33seeing that spring. I wasn't keeping
- 2:36track of her personal life, and I
- 2:38certainly wasn't checking whether my
- 2:40fianceé was part of it. Our mother,
- 2:42Celeste, was 59 and managed an insurance
- 2:45office. She could organize anything, and
- 2:48she could make you feel ungrateful for
- 2:50noticing she'd taken over. Dad Graham
- 2:54was 62, a retired electrician who still
- 2:56did little repair jobs for neighbors. He
- 2:59was quieter. Growing up, the explanation
- 3:03for everything was that Marin took
- 3:04things harder than I did. It never
- 3:07occurred to me that one day they'd use
- 3:09the same reasoning to keep me from
- 3:10knowing who I was marrying. 3 weeks
- 3:13before the wedding, Marin told me she
- 3:15didn't want to do the reading during the
- 3:16ceremony anymore. She said she felt sick
- 3:19in the mornings and didn't want to stand
- 3:21in front of people. I didn't interrogate
- 3:24her. A few days later, Bennett asked
- 3:27whether Marin was still coming to the
- 3:29rehearsal dinner. He sounded oddly
- 3:31concerned about it. I told him yes, as
- 3:34far as I knew. He said, "Good. I just
- 3:39don't want anyone feeling left out." I
- 3:41remember that exact sentence because it
- 3:43sounded so harmless. The ceremony was
- 3:46scheduled for 4 at a renovated farm
- 3:48venue near Ron, north of Savannah, with
- 3:5195 guests expected.
- 3:54Around 3:30, I noticed the seating chart
- 3:56had Aunt Nola listed at a table with
- 3:58people she'd had a falling out with
- 3:59years ago. Daphne was helping the
- 4:02photographer move a garment bag, so I
- 4:04went to find mom myself.
- 4:06Someone told me she'd gone toward the
- 4:08smaller storage room behind the getting
- 4:10ready area. I could hear voices before I
- 4:13reached it. The door hadn't latched. I
- 4:16heard Marin say, "He just texted me that
- 4:19nothing changes today. He really is
- 4:22going through with it." Mom told her to
- 4:24put the phone away. Marin said, "You
- 4:27told me he might call it off once he had
- 4:29time to think." Then mom said my name.
- 4:33She told Marin, "You said you could keep
- 4:35quiet until after the ceremony."
- 4:37That was the agreement. Marin answered,
- 4:40"I'm the one having his baby, Mom. How
- 4:43long am I supposed to pretend?" I
- 4:46stopped with my hand inches from the
- 4:48door. I stood there for another second
- 4:51trying to make sense of what I had
- 4:52heard. Then I pushed the door open.
- 4:55After I opened the door, Marin kept
- 4:58staring at the floor. Her face was
- 5:00blotchy and there was a tissue twisted
- 5:02in her fingers. I asked, "Is Ben at the
- 5:06father?" Marin nodded once. I asked her
- 5:09to say it out loud because I needed to
- 5:11know I hadn't invented what I heard. She
- 5:14said, "I think so. It has to be him." I
- 5:19asked how far along she was. She said
- 5:22about 10 weeks. Then she started crying
- 5:25harder and saying she hadn't meant for
- 5:26any of this to happen. She said she had
- 5:29kept telling herself Bennett would stop
- 5:31the wedding. She knew I was the one he
- 5:34had asked to marry him, but she said she
- 5:36had believed that meant he would
- 5:37eventually choose her once he knew about
- 5:39the pregnancy. I asked what he had
- 5:42actually promised her. She looked at mom
- 5:44and said he never said he would leave
- 5:46Laurel. I thought he would. The text
- 5:50that morning had finally made it
- 5:51impossible for her to keep pretending. I
- 5:54couldn't take in the crying. I was
- 5:57looking at mom because she'd been
- 5:58telling Marin to keep quiet before the
- 6:00ceremony.
- 6:02You knew? I told her. Dad finally looked
- 6:05up. I asked him how recently. He said 11
- 6:10days. 11 days. They'd sat across from me
- 6:14and discussed the wedding as if nothing
- 6:16was wrong. Mom reached for my arm. I
- 6:20moved back. She said she wanted us to go
- 6:23somewhere private. We were already in a
- 6:26storage room with folded chairs and
- 6:27extra table linens. I asked what could
- 6:30possibly be more private than that. She
- 6:33said people could hear us. That was the
- 6:36first thing she was worried about,
- 6:38whether somebody outside the door might
- 6:40hear. I asked Marin when it started. She
- 6:44said it had been going on for about 4
- 6:46months.
- 6:47She said she had told Bennett before she
- 6:49told mom and dad. I asked whether
- 6:52Bennett knew. She said he did. I asked
- 6:56whether he denied being the father. She
- 6:58shook her head. None of that was a DNA
- 7:01test, and I knew it, but there was no
- 7:04question they'd been sleeping together
- 7:06while he was engaged to me. I said, "For
- 7:09months?" You were at my dress fitting in
- 7:12May. Mara looked up long enough to say
- 7:15she hadn't known what to do. Mom said,
- 7:18"Lel, please lower your voice. I wasn't
- 7:21yelling. I was talking in the same voice
- 7:24I'd used to ask about Aunt Nola's seat.
- 7:27That seemed to bother her more." I asked
- 7:30Dad if he'd planned to tell me. He
- 7:32rubbed his face and said, "I wanted to."
- 7:35Mom cut in with, "We were trying to find
- 7:38the right time." I asked, "After I
- 7:41married him?" Dad looked toward the
- 7:43door. Mom said nothing. I stepped into
- 7:47the hall and called Daphne Rusk, my best
- 7:49friend, and made of honor. My hands were
- 7:52shaking so badly I hit the wrong contact
- 7:54first. When she answered, I told her to
- 7:57come to the side hallway alone. She
- 8:00arrived with a safety pin between her
- 8:02lips. She had been fixing a loose hem. I
- 8:05said, "Benned has been sleeping with
- 8:07Marin. She's pregnant." My parents knew.
- 8:12Daphne took the pin out and said, "Okay,
- 8:15sit down." I told her I needed Bennett
- 8:18and I didn't want a scene in front of
- 8:20the guests. She said she'd get him and
- 8:22find an empty room. I asked her not to
- 8:25tell anyone yet. She nodded and went.
- 8:29The wedding staff were still getting
- 8:31ready because nobody outside our family
- 8:33knew what had happened. I had no idea
- 8:35yet how long these conversations would
- 8:37take. Daphne found a small meeting room
- 8:40the venue used for tours and vendor
- 8:42calls. She brought Benedan through the
- 8:45back entrance. He was wearing the navy
- 8:47suit we'd picked together. His tie was
- 8:50straight. He looked at me and asked if
- 8:53something had happened to mom. I said,
- 8:56"Did you sleep with my sister?" He
- 8:58stared at me. He said my name softly as
- 9:02if that might make me stop asking. I
- 9:04asked again. Finally, he said yes. He
- 9:09glanced at the door, then asked who else
- 9:11knew. That was his first question after
- 9:14admitting it. I sat down because I
- 9:17couldn't feel my knees properly. I told
- 9:19him to tell me when it started. I asked
- 9:22whether it happened once. He said no. I
- 9:26asked if he remembered the Friday in May
- 9:28when I stayed late at work and he said
- 9:30he was helping Marin move a bookshelf.
- 9:33He looked away. He remembered
- 9:36I had helped him load that bookshelf
- 9:38into his car. He tried to explain that
- 9:40we'd both been stressed and he was
- 9:42scared about the wedding. I told him he
- 9:45was making it sound like something that
- 9:46had just happened to him. He said, "I
- 9:49know." I asked him why he was still
- 9:52standing there in his wedding suit. He
- 9:55said he loved our life together, the
- 9:57house, our friends, the plans we had
- 9:59made. He kept saying our life as if he
- 10:02could separate it from what he had done
- 10:03to me. I asked whether he knew about the
- 10:06baby. He said yes. He'd known for almost
- 10:10two weeks. He didn't argue when I said
- 10:13it might be his. I asked whether he
- 10:16planned to be involved if it was. He
- 10:18said he hadn't figured that out. He had
- 10:21a plan for getting married and no plan
- 10:23for what came afterward. Then he said
- 10:26something I still hear clearly. I was
- 10:28going to tell you. I just needed to get
- 10:31through today. I looked at him and
- 10:34asked, "Get through today is what my
- 10:36husband." He started saying we could
- 10:39talk after the ceremony, that he wasn't
- 10:41asking me to pretend forever, just to
- 10:43give us time. I asked whether he
- 10:46understood that once we were married, it
- 10:48wouldn't be the same conversation.
- 10:50He said he loved me. He took a step
- 10:53toward me and I asked him to stay where
- 10:55he was. I pulled off my engagement ring.
- 10:59It caught for a second on my knuckle
- 11:01because my hands had swollen in the
- 11:02heat. I set it on the table between us.
- 11:06Then it looked at the ring, then at me,
- 11:08and asked, "Are you really doing this
- 11:10right now?" I said, "I'm not marrying
- 11:13you." I wasn't calm inside. I was trying
- 11:17to get the words out in the right order
- 11:19so I wouldn't have to say them twice. He
- 11:22said we needed to talk to my parents. I
- 11:24told him I'd already spoken to them. I
- 11:27asked if he'd talked to dad. Bennett
- 11:30said yes. 3 days earlier, Dad had called
- 11:34him and asked to meet for coffee. I
- 11:36asked what Dad had said. Bennett
- 11:39hesitated, then told me dad wanted him
- 11:41to go through with the wedding and deal
- 11:43with Marin afterward. Bennett said Dad
- 11:46had talked about how hard it would be on
- 11:47everyone if we canled. I asked if mom
- 11:50knew about that conversation.
- 11:53He said he assumed she did. The plan was
- 11:56for me to stand outside on the lawn, say
- 11:58my vows, become his wife, and learn the
- 12:00truth later. I left Bennett sitting at
- 12:03the table with the ring. Daphne was
- 12:06waiting outside. She asked what I wanted
- 12:08to do. I told her I needed to speak to
- 12:11my parents one more time. Then we were
- 12:14canceling the ceremony. Daphne checked
- 12:16her phone and said it was already past
- 12:184. She had quietly asked the coordinator
- 12:21to hold the processional while she found
- 12:23Bennett. The coordinator had told the
- 12:26officient there would be a delay. Guests
- 12:28were seated, but no one had walked down
- 12:30the aisle. I was grateful she had
- 12:33thought to do that when I couldn't think
- 12:34past the next question. Mom and dad were
- 12:38in the bridal suite when I came back
- 12:39with the ceremony already running late.
- 12:42Marin had gone to the restroom with one
- 12:44of the venues paper towels pressed
- 12:46against her face. Mom looked relieved to
- 12:49see me. She said, "Good. Let's take a
- 12:53minute and think. I told her I knew
- 12:56about Dad's meeting with Bennett. Dad
- 12:58closed his eyes. I asked why he'd told
- 13:01Bennett to marry me anyway. He said he
- 13:04hadn't known what else to do. He'd hoped
- 13:07Bennett would make things right. I asked
- 13:10how marrying me without telling me would
- 13:12make anything right. Dad said he had
- 13:14asked Bennett to be financially
- 13:16responsible if the baby was his, but not
- 13:18to walk away from me over something they
- 13:20still hoped they could keep contained.
- 13:23He thought we could have the wedding and
- 13:24then sit down and sort it out. I asked
- 13:27when that conversation with me was
- 13:29supposed to happen. He said he hadn't
- 13:32worked that out. I asked whether he
- 13:34understood that he was planning to let
- 13:36me become Bennett's wife first. Dad
- 13:39nodded. He had understood.
- 13:42I said, "You were going to let me make a
- 13:44legal commitment without knowing what
- 13:46was happening in my own family." He
- 13:48didn't argue. He just looked tired. I
- 13:52wasn't interested in how tired he was.
- 13:55Mom started listing everything that
- 13:57would be lost if I canceled. She said
- 13:59she'd been the one telling Marin to stay
- 14:01quiet because a canceled wedding would
- 14:03put Marin's pregnancy in front of
- 14:05relatives who barely knew her. I asked
- 14:08her directly whether she wanted me to
- 14:09find out after I was legally married.
- 14:12She stared at me, then said, "I thought
- 14:14once it was done, you two could decide
- 14:16what to do privately." That was the
- 14:19answer. Relatives had flown in from out
- 14:22of state. The catering deposit was gone.
- 14:26I told her Marin's health mattered, but
- 14:28it didn't give them permission to lie to
- 14:29me. Mom said we were trying to protect
- 14:32both our daughters. I said, "You
- 14:35protected Marin by letting me marry a
- 14:37man who was lying to me." She looked
- 14:40hurt as though I'd accused her of
- 14:42something she hadn't actually done. Then
- 14:44she asked whether we could at least get
- 14:46through the ceremony and talk afterward.
- 14:49Dad didn't say no. I looked straight at
- 14:52him and asked, "Were you going to walk
- 14:53me down that aisle knowing all of this?"
- 14:56He answered, "Yes."
- 14:58He said it softly. I think he expected
- 15:01me to hear regret in his voice.
- 15:04All I heard was the answer. For a few
- 15:07seconds, I couldn't speak. I was
- 15:09thinking about how he'd stood in my
- 15:11doorway that morning and told me I
- 15:13looked beautiful. He had known. He'd
- 15:16seen the dress, kissed my head, and
- 15:18known. Mom was still talking about how
- 15:21there would be time to sort everything
- 15:23out. I asked her to stop. She said I
- 15:27shouldn't make a permanent decision
- 15:28while I was upset. I told her they were
- 15:31asking me to marry him before I even
- 15:33knew what he had done. Dad stood up and
- 15:36I thought he might finally say he was
- 15:37sorry. Instead, he said, "Maybe we can
- 15:41postpone the announcement until after
- 15:42the guests leave." I told them the
- 15:45wedding was cancelled. Mom said, "Lel,
- 15:48think about your sister." I said, "I've
- 15:51spent the last 11 days thinking I was
- 15:53getting married. You spent them thinking
- 15:56about her. I'm done having this
- 15:58conversation.
- 16:00I walked out before I started screaming.
- 16:03I don't know if that was strength. I
- 16:05think I was afraid that if I stayed,
- 16:07they'd find one more way to make me
- 16:09doubt myself. Elise Warren, the venue
- 16:12coordinator, was in the service corridor
- 16:14checking with the catering captain. She
- 16:17already knew Daphne had requested a
- 16:19delay, but not why. I told her the
- 16:22ceremony wasn't happening. She asked
- 16:24whether I wanted to delay it or cancel
- 16:26it.
- 16:27I said cancel. She didn't ask why. She
- 16:31took me into her office and closed the
- 16:33door. She explained that the food was
- 16:36already being prepared. The staffing
- 16:38minimum had been met and some vendors
- 16:40would still charge the full contracted
- 16:42amount. She could stop the ceremony
- 16:45setup and ask the officient to stand
- 16:46down. She could have someone make a
- 16:49brief announcement to guests. Elise
- 16:52wrote down what I wanted the
- 16:53announcement to say and read it back.
- 16:55The wedding ceremony has been cancelled
- 16:57due to a private family matter. That was
- 17:00enough. Daphne helped me out of the
- 17:03dress. I changed into the loose pants
- 17:05and shirt I brought for the next
- 17:07morning. I heard the music outside stop.
- 17:11Then there was a murmur that grew
- 17:12louder, the sound of people talking over
- 17:14one another. My phone began lighting up
- 17:17on the counter. I turned it face down.
- 17:21Daphne packed my shoes, makeup bag, and
- 17:24overnight things. I realized I was still
- 17:27holding Aunt Nola's seating chart. I
- 17:29folded it again and put it in my purse.
- 17:32I didn't know why I kept it. I think my
- 17:35brain was still trying to finish the
- 17:37errand I'd started before everything
- 17:39happened. I didn't see Bennett again
- 17:41that afternoon. I did see mom. She
- 17:45caught up with us near the hallway
- 17:46leading to the parking lot. Her face was
- 17:49tight and she kept glancing toward the
- 17:51reception room. She said people were
- 17:54asking questions and Marin was crying so
- 17:57hard she couldn't catch her breath. She
- 17:59asked whether I would speak to my sister
- 18:01for just a minute. I said no. Mom said,
- 18:05"She's still your sister?" I said, "Then
- 18:09go sit with her. You've already decided
- 18:11that's where you need to be." Dad
- 18:14appeared behind her and offered to drive
- 18:16me home. I told him Daphne was taking
- 18:18me. He said he understood, but I don't
- 18:21think he did. I couldn't sit beside the
- 18:24man who'd planned to escort me to a
- 18:26wedding he knew was built on a lie.
- 18:28Daphne walked with me to her car. I put
- 18:31the bag at my feet and closed the door.
- 18:34For the first time all day, nobody was
- 18:36asking me to do anything. Daphne drove
- 18:39me to her apartment instead of the
- 18:41townhouse. I couldn't bear the thought
- 18:43of seeing Bennett's shoes by the door or
- 18:45the half-packed suitcase we'd planned to
- 18:47take on our honeymoon. She ordered
- 18:49takeout and put a glass of water beside
- 18:51me. I sat on her couch in my wedding day
- 18:54hairstyle and borrowed clothes. At some
- 18:57point, she asked if I wanted her to
- 18:59contact Bennett about my things. I said,
- 19:02"Not yet." Then I cried. Not the kind of
- 19:06crying where you say something
- 19:07meaningful between breaths.
- 19:10My face hurt and I couldn't get
- 19:11comfortable. I kept asking why my dad
- 19:14hadn't told me. Daphne didn't try to
- 19:17explain him. She said, "I don't know. I
- 19:21didn't sleep much." Around 5:00 in the
- 19:24morning, I checked my phone. There were
- 19:2630some messages, including one from
- 19:29Bennett that said, "Please don't make
- 19:30any more decisions until we talk." I
- 19:33turned the phone off. The next day, I
- 19:36had to make decisions anyway.
- 19:39Elise called about the food and the
- 19:40vendors who were already on site. We
- 19:43still owed for food and staff already
- 19:45booked. The photographer had taken
- 19:48pictures of me getting ready. I paid for
- 19:51her time and asked her not to send the
- 19:52gallery. I could not bear to see myself
- 19:55smiling in those pictures. Bennett and I
- 19:58had separate personal accounts and a
- 20:00shared account for rent and household
- 20:02bills. We hadn't combined all our money.
- 20:05Thankfully, I stopped future deposits
- 20:08into the shared account without touching
- 20:09its balance. I sent Ben at the
- 20:12outstanding venue bills. He replied that
- 20:15I was the one who canled, so he didn't
- 20:17see why he should pay more than his
- 20:19original share. I sat at Daphne's
- 20:21kitchen table and stared at that
- 20:23sentence. I wrote back that he was
- 20:26responsible for the amounts he'd agreed
- 20:27to under the contracts and that I wanted
- 20:29to discuss the additional expenses we'd
- 20:31incurred after he knew about the
- 20:33pregnancy. I wanted him to acknowledge
- 20:36that he'd allowed us to keep spending
- 20:37money on a wedding he knew I might never
- 20:39have agreed to. I sent him copies of the
- 20:42confirmations he had approved after
- 20:44Marin told him she was pregnant. He
- 20:47replied that he had never expected me to
- 20:49find out that day. I read that twice. He
- 20:53wasn't denying what he had done. He was
- 20:55telling me he had counted on having more
- 20:57time to hide it. After that, he stopped
- 21:00arguing that the additional charges were
- 21:02entirely my fault.
- 21:04When I told him I was ending the lease
- 21:06too, he asked if we really had to lose
- 21:08the townhouse on top of everything else.
- 21:11I told him I could not keep paying to
- 21:12live in the place where he had lied to
- 21:14me for months. We settled in writing. He
- 21:18paid his share and part of the later
- 21:19non-refundable costs. I still lost
- 21:22money, a lot of it. I also lost the
- 21:26vacation days I'd scheduled and the
- 21:28honeymoon cancellation fees we couldn't
- 21:30recover. There was no moment when
- 21:33somebody handed me a check and made
- 21:34everything fair. I went back to the
- 21:37townhouse on Tuesday with Daphne.
- 21:39Bennett had stayed with a coworker since
- 21:41the wedding. He'd texted that he would
- 21:44keep away while I collected what I
- 21:46needed. We weren't married, but we'd
- 21:48built a household together. Both our
- 21:51names were on the lease, and ending it
- 21:52early cost us. We divided the furniture
- 21:56according to who had bought it. I took
- 21:58the desk I'd used for work, my
- 22:00grandmother's dishes, and the ugly
- 22:02yellow armchair Bennett had always
- 22:04complained about. The worst part was
- 22:06finding the stack of blank thank you
- 22:08cards we'd bought for wedding gifts. I'd
- 22:11written the first few addresses on
- 22:12envelopes. I put them in a box and
- 22:15couldn't look at them again. Marin
- 22:18texted me a long apology about a week
- 22:20later. She said she hadn't planned to
- 22:22fall for Bennett and that she was scared
- 22:24about being pregnant. She wrote that she
- 22:27understood if I couldn't forgive her
- 22:28right away. I didn't answer. Later, mom
- 22:33told me Marin was upset that I wouldn't
- 22:34help her find an apartment closer to the
- 22:36clinic. I had done that kind of thing
- 22:39for her before. This time, I said no.
- 22:43Marin tried calling twice after that. I
- 22:46let both calls go to voicemail. She left
- 22:49one message saying she understood she
- 22:51had ruined our relationship.
- 22:53Then she asked what she was supposed to
- 22:55do about rent and work if Bennett didn't
- 22:57step up. She said mom had told her I
- 23:00might help once I had calmed down. I
- 23:02saved the message and didn't call back.
- 23:05The next time mom asked on her behalf, I
- 23:07told her if you promised her I would
- 23:09help, you need to correct that. Mom went
- 23:12quiet. I did not offer another solution.
- 23:16She was going to have to make those
- 23:18decisions without me. The phrase right
- 23:20away bothered me. It made what she'd
- 23:23done sound like something that would
- 23:25naturally be over after enough time
- 23:26passed. Bennett sent a message saying he
- 23:29was trying to work out his
- 23:31responsibilities and that he hoped we
- 23:32could talk as friends eventually. I
- 23:35didn't answer that either. Whether the
- 23:38child was his would have to be
- 23:39established properly and whatever
- 23:41support or parenting arrangements
- 23:42followed belonged to them. Bennett had
- 23:45already lost our home together and the
- 23:47wedding he kept insisting we could
- 23:48somehow get through. I wasn't going to
- 23:51help him figure out the next part. I
- 23:54didn't wish anything bad on the baby. I
- 23:57just wasn't part of that household. Mom
- 24:00called almost every day for the first
- 24:01two weeks. At first, she left messages
- 24:04saying she loved me and wanted to know I
- 24:06was eating. Then she began explaining
- 24:09herself. She said Marin had been
- 24:12frightened and that the pregnancy made
- 24:14everything complicated.
- 24:16She said they'd hoped Bennett would tell
- 24:17me on his own. I listened to one message
- 24:20twice because I wanted to make sure I'd
- 24:22heard it correctly. They'd hoped he
- 24:24would tell me, but dad had told him to
- 24:26go through with the ceremony. I asked
- 24:29mom when she imagined I would be told at
- 24:31the reception, after the honeymoon, or
- 24:33when Marin started showing. She said I
- 24:36knew it had to be after the wedding. I
- 24:39never decided exactly when. When I
- 24:42finally answered one of her calls, I
- 24:44asked why she'd spent 11 days arranging
- 24:46flowers and seating while knowing what
- 24:48was happening. She said she thought the
- 24:50wedding might give Bennett and me a
- 24:52chance to start fresh. I asked how that
- 24:55was possible if I didn't know what I was
- 24:57starting fresh from. She said I was
- 24:59making her sound cruel. I said I was
- 25:02describing what happened. We got
- 25:05nowhere.
- 25:066 weeks after the wedding, Aunt Nola
- 25:08called. She'd been one of the few
- 25:10relatives who hadn't pressed me for
- 25:12details.
- 25:14She asked if she could say something
- 25:15awkward. I told her she might as well.
- 25:19She said mom had been telling people
- 25:21that Bennett had some personal trouble
- 25:23I'd known about before the wedding and
- 25:24that I'd panicked when the day arrived.
- 25:27Nola said she didn't think that sounded
- 25:29like me. I felt hot all over. I asked
- 25:33exactly what mom had said. Nola repeated
- 25:36it as carefully as she could, making it
- 25:38clear she hadn't heard mom say I knew
- 25:40about Marin. It was more subtle than
- 25:43that. Mom had made it sound as though
- 25:46I'd been aware of a problem and simply
- 25:47couldn't follow through. The story left
- 25:50out the affair, the pregnancy, and the
- 25:52fact that my parents had hidden both
- 25:54from me. It left me looking unreliable
- 25:57while everyone else looked unfortunate.
- 26:00I called mom. She answered immediately
- 26:03as if she'd been waiting. I asked
- 26:06whether she'd told people I knew about
- 26:07Bennett's problem before the wedding.
- 26:10She said she hadn't wanted to share
- 26:11Marin's private medical information. I
- 26:14told her I wasn't asking her to announce
- 26:16a pregnancy. I was asking why she was
- 26:19telling people I'd known there was a
- 26:21problem when I hadn't. She said she'd
- 26:23only tried to explain why the ceremony
- 26:25ended without hurting anyone further. I
- 26:28said, "You made it sound like I changed
- 26:30my mind for no reason.
- 26:32Mom said people are going to talk no
- 26:34matter what we say. Then she said Marin
- 26:37was already ashamed and I needed to
- 26:39think about how this affected her. I was
- 26:42standing in the parking garage at work
- 26:44with my lunch still in my hand. I said,
- 26:47"You don't get to lie about why I left
- 26:49and then asked me to protect your
- 26:50version of it." She said I was being
- 26:53unfair. I told her I wouldn't keep
- 26:56having the same conversation and I hung
- 26:58up. I didn't put a post online. I didn't
- 27:02send screenshots to everyone on the
- 27:04guest list. I wrote a short message to
- 27:06Nola and a handful of relatives who had
- 27:09contacted me directly or repeated mom's
- 27:11account. I said I had not known about
- 27:13Bennett's relationship with Marin before
- 27:15the wedding day. I said my parents had
- 27:18known beforehand and that I'd canceled
- 27:20the ceremony when I learned the truth. I
- 27:23didn't mention how far along Marin was
- 27:25or include anything about her
- 27:26appointments. I asked them not to pass
- 27:29the message around. Although I
- 27:31understood I couldn't control what
- 27:32people did with it. A couple of them
- 27:34replied with apologies.
- 27:37Nola said mom was upset that relatives
- 27:39had begun asking why she had kept the
- 27:41truth from me. I told Nola she did not
- 27:44need to carry messages between us. I
- 27:47stopped answering follow-up questions. I
- 27:50had already said what happened. Around
- 27:52that time, Dad sent me a message that
- 27:54said, "I told Bennett to go ahead with
- 27:56the wedding. I knew you hadn't been
- 27:59told. I'm sorry I made that choice."
- 28:02Unlike the excuses he had given me at
- 28:04the venue, this time he named what he
- 28:06had chosen to do. I read it, put my
- 28:09phone down, and didn't answer. An
- 28:12apology wasn't the same thing as
- 28:14trusting him again. A few weeks later, I
- 28:17found a new apartment on the other side
- 28:19of town.
- 28:20It was smaller than the townhouse, but
- 28:22the windows were good and I could walk
- 28:24to a grocery store. The first night
- 28:26there, I ate cereal standing at the
- 28:29kitchen counter because I hadn't
- 28:30unpacked a bowl. I cried when I realized
- 28:33I'd left my favorite baking sheet
- 28:35behind, which was ridiculous because it
- 28:37cost about $20.
- 28:40Then I laughed because I was crying
- 28:41about a baking sheet after everything
- 28:43else. I bought another one that weekend.
- 28:47Daphne helped me move, but she also told
- 28:49me when I was being impossible about
- 28:51accepting help. She took a box of books
- 28:54out of my hands and told me to stop
- 28:56pretending I could move everything
- 28:57alone. We argued about where the couch
- 29:00should go. That was an argument we could
- 29:03actually settle. A co-orker named Ioni
- 29:06invited me to join a Saturday walking
- 29:08group that met on trails and shaded
- 29:10paths around coastal Georgia. I said,
- 29:13"No, the first time." I said, "Maybe the
- 29:16second." The third time I went because I
- 29:19couldn't stand another weekend checking
- 29:20my phone and thinking about what I'd be
- 29:22doing if the wedding had happened. There
- 29:24were eight people, most of whom I didn't
- 29:26know. They talked about muddy trails and
- 29:29somebody's dog. Nobody knew my sister's
- 29:32name. Nobody knew I'd had a wedding
- 29:35dress hanging in a garment bag in
- 29:36Daphne's spare closet. I walked four
- 29:39miles and went home tired enough to
- 29:41sleep. I kept going.
- 29:44Some Saturdays I talked the whole time.
- 29:47Other Saturdays I hardly said anything.
- 29:50Nobody made it a project to fix me. 9
- 29:54months after the wedding that never
- 29:55happened, a woman from work invited me
- 29:57to her ceremony. I almost declined. I
- 30:01didn't know her well enough to explain
- 30:03why an invitation with a pretty envelope
- 30:05could make my stomach turn. I finally
- 30:08said yes and asked Daphne if she'd be my
- 30:10guest. Daphne told me she was honored,
- 30:13then asked whether the reception would
- 30:15have decent food. It made me laugh. We
- 30:19drove together to a small venue near
- 30:20Richmond Hill, south of Savannah. I wore
- 30:24a green dress I bought for work, not
- 30:26something new and symbolic. We sat near
- 30:28the back. When the music started, I felt
- 30:32my throat tighten. For a second, I was
- 30:34back in that storage room holding the
- 30:36seating chart and listening to my sister
- 30:38cry. Daphne looked over at me. I shook
- 30:42my head a little to tell her I was okay.
- 30:45She didn't grab my hand or whisper
- 30:46anything. She just stayed beside me. The
- 30:50bride walked in with her father. I
- 30:53watched him straighten the edge of her
- 30:54veil before he gave her a kiss. I
- 30:57thought about dad standing beside me in
- 30:59my dress that morning, knowing what he
- 31:01knew. For a moment, I could hardly
- 31:04watch. Then the bride laughed because
- 31:06her veil caught on a chair and everybody
- 31:08laughed with her. The ceremony went on.
- 31:12I stood when the guests stood. I clapped
- 31:15when they kissed. I meant it when I
- 31:18congratulated them afterward. At the
- 31:20reception, Daphne and I talked to a
- 31:23couple at our table about their long
- 31:24drive and a seafood place they liked out
- 31:26toward Tybe Island. I ate half my dinner
- 31:29and danced to one song I hadn't heard in
- 31:31years.
- 31:33Nothing happened that fixed the past. I
- 31:36just went to a wedding and had a decent
- 31:38evening. I'd been afraid that wouldn't
- 31:40be possible for me anymore. Mom had
- 31:43texted earlier that week asking whether
- 31:45we could meet for coffee. I hadn't
- 31:47answered. I didn't know whether I'd ever
- 31:50want to see my parents together in the
- 31:52same room again. I wasn't making a
- 31:54decision about the rest of my life that
- 31:56night. I knew I wasn't going to show up
- 31:59for a family dinner just because enough
- 32:01months had passed and I knew I didn't
- 32:03owe Bennett or Marin a conversation.
- 32:06That was as far ahead as I could
- 32:07honestly see. After the reception,
- 32:10Daphne asked if I wanted to stay for the
- 32:12last dance. I told her I was tired. We
- 32:16said goodbye to the couple, found our
- 32:18coats, and walked out to the parking
- 32:20lot. On the drive home, we stopped for
- 32:23fries because we barely touched the
- 32:25cake. I got back to my apartment, set my
- 32:28alarm for the morning walk, and put my
- 32:30shoes by the door.
